using the 'highlight stick' when running the ball against a db will flatten the db everytime (at least with corey dillon and laurence maroney). using the 'highlight stick' against a linebacker has resulted in a fumble almost 50% of the time. brady is insanely good, i can put the ball anywhere with him. ben watson is a freak, i don't even bother throwing to him before he's 10 yards downfield because d backs can't bring him down and lb's can't stay with him.

i'm a mess on defense, pats linebackers are too slow against any sort of stretch/sweep. i've had to press my dbacks to the line leaving me vulnerable to the bomb.

gameplay doesn't seem that much different than last year. i can't believe i've been buying these stupid games for 14 years now.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 25 August 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Wow! Do you really get a new version every year? I don't have the patience for that. I mean it's basically the same thing, isn't it?

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Friday, 25 August 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

this is the first year i haven't taken the next day off from work since 1995. yes, i get it every year. it's hard to believe my mid 30s are just around the corner.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 25 August 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

Wow! I am seriously not trying to poke fun but I'm interested in why. Does it really change a lot from year to year or is it just for completeness value? (Note: I Have only actually played Madden maybe 2x)

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Friday, 25 August 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

no, there are new things almost every year. this year is the 'highlight stick' that gives players special moves based on their body type and real life style of play (i.e. corey dillon will plow through a guy while warrick dunn will do that funky stop/duck/start thing and the defensive player will fly past him) and the ability to control ANY player not just the one with the ball. so if you want to control a pulling guard you can or if you want to pass block with say, the left tackle you can. and then you can switch back to the guy with the ball with a touch of a button. it's been ok so far, i like controlling the fullback then switching to the tailback after clearing a hole because 9 times out of 10 when i'm the tailback from the snap the fb will run right past the linebacker in the hole trying to lay a block on the safety. frustrating as hell.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 25 August 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

That sounds kind of confusing, I'm kind of a master of the hand-held 1981 thing with just a bunch of moving around dots. I kind of sucked at Madden the couple times I played it.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Friday, 25 August 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

in september my brother is coming to chicago and i know we will spend the entire weekend drinking beer and whiskey and playing this game. oh man no way am i going to figure out a highlight stick, i can barely roll up enough to keep the king of all cosmos off my ass

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 25 August 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I wish someone would combine Madden and Katamari for one game to rule them all. Also it would help if somehow it integrated Sonic the Hedgehog cos that's the only game I'm good at.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Friday, 25 August 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah except with Dance Dance Revolution too, for no reason at all.

Ho snap that would be awesome.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 25 August 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno if i wanna shell out for a roster update (i have 06), but the fact that you can control blockers sounds sooooo awesome.

SLUTSPIRIA (Adrian Langston), Friday, 25 August 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

esp. considering how exceedingly useless the AI ones are

SLUTSPIRIA (Adrian Langston), Friday, 25 August 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Most glaring part of useless blockers to me has always been on kickoffs/returning punts. It's like special teams all decide to pull a Randy Moss and take the play off at once.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 25 August 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

ahahaha YES. I often try to control one of the faster blockers while the ball is in the air on kickoff, but i almost never make any returns past the 30.

SLUTSPIRIA (Adrian Langston), Friday, 25 August 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

The trick is to know where teh blockers are going for their coffee break.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

lol, some of it is so fuckin random. also the increasing proliferation of 100s is bs. my fave part though is that someone watched Reggie Bush last season and thought "shit, we need to give that dude 100 on agility!" wtf did he do last year above the previous season that made someone decided he needed 100 in any category.

needless to say, i will be queuing with the rest of the plebs on release day. i love this shit sooo much. screens for next-gen version look sweet.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

screens for next-gen version look sweet.

i'm ashamed to say that i have given serious thought on multiple occasions to blowing my economic stimulus check on a new video game console just because of madden.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't played a new Madden game since 2005. Do they still suck?

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 20 June 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

I love Madden so much.

after reading the updates from pats camp i'm kinda jonesing for the new madden?

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

i just want to know if they're gonna reinsert favre and if they'll retouch the cover art so he's wearing his new team's uni

cankles, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

there was a piece in sporting news where EA played through seasons in the 09 edition and the Vikings made the playoffs with Favre and not without.... but PACKERS do much better without.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

Any year the Chargers are good is a year I have to buy Madden.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

hey, this is available for purchase today, no?

if so i think i'm blowing off movies in the park in favor of a six pack and some madden.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

I saw on ESPN last night that, while he's still in his Pack uni on the cover, they've already got him in a Jets uni in the game itself.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

they've supposedly already released an update including Favre at NYJ. i'll check in approx. 2 hours when i get home and start playing.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

you can dl new cover art from ea.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

so did anyone buy this?

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

Holding off until I reach some Xbox equilibrium; the new system and six games makes me feel like I need to take a month off from work before I can think about really engaging with anything.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

i need to buy a new tv before i get a new system. went out at lunch and bought it for ps 2 because i need to stay in for the rest of the month and start socking away some $$$.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

i am waiting for the 'My Skill' levels to adapt to me being fucking useless at rushing. after a bunch of 2-yard attempts from typical rushing formations I tried to go for a more Pats-authentic rush from spread, and though just like last year the playbook contains running plays from a spread formation they are absolutely terrible in practice.

2nd game of the season was a nail-biter against the Jets that went into overtime, that i won thanks to a lucky coin toss and a sweet pass over the middle to Welker who broke away from the covering safety and took it in for 6. total rushing yards were a mighty 15 off 10 attempts. fortunately my short pass game is pretty much unstoppable.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the only way my rushing #'s look anything like real life is if i bust off a 60 yard run at some point in the game. tackling #s and rushing #s never match up w/real life or with simulated games. i only play 6 minute quarters, it's fucking impossible for me to have 30 carries a game.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

so did anyone buy this?

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

So far, it sucks!

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 14 August 2008 03:48 (seventeen years ago)

it sucks or you suck at it?

so far my only real complaint is that it's sometimes difficult to select the exact player i want to control on defense. i like to control different players depending on the type of play and i've been caught out a few times.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

So far, it sucks!

otm. i played one game and there are no changes to the pat's playbook. there's still only one formation (except shotgun) where the pats can run the ball and have 3 wide receivers. too soon for me to be hoping for next year.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 14 August 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

i guess this must be a system-specific thing, but i'm on PS3 and the Pats' playbook is significantly different from last year. all of the go-to passes i liked to have on audible have disappeared :(

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 14 August 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

DAMMIT!!!!

chicago kevin, Thursday, 14 August 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

they did revamp the audibles but i haven't figured it out yet.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 14 August 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

This game is so fucking complicated I don't even know where to start.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

WAHT??!?!??!

chicago kevin, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

i've played half a regular season so far with P'burgh (feels like cheating using the pats, silly really but whatcha gonna do?). i'm at 6-2, including an infuriating loss to the iggles where i really lost the plot in the last quarter.

i'm using the 'my skill' settings and at this point my pass and rush defense meters are at full, my pass offense is nearly full, and my rush offense is about a third of the way along. the rush meter will drop just enough for me not to be terrible and i'll have one 100-yard game and the meter will shoot up again, and then it's 2-yard gain city all over again. it doesn't help that Willie Parker falls over if a defensive player breathes on him.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 28 August 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

i'm coming up on week 17 as the pats and i don't know how long i'll play as them as i'm 14-1 heading into the last reg season game. true to form my defense isn't overpowering but inside the red zone teams just don't score td's against me. they march down the fucking field 4 out of every 5 possessions though. i don't have much of a pass rush, brady isn't having an overwhelming year (moss is though), and maroney has 1,110 yards heading into the last game which is good for like 10th place in the afc (i think there are 3 players with over 2,000 rush yards already).

chicago kevin, Thursday, 28 August 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

ten months pass...

I've not played Madden since it first came out a zillion years ago for Super Nintendo, but last night I rented it for the Wii and sat around working my way through it blindly. Before I knew it, five hours had passed and it was almost 3 in the morning. Addictive is an understatment.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 28 June 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

In the old days I'd have stretches where I was JUST trying to put the finishing touches on my offseason, getting my team ready for the preseason, before quitting and going to sleep. And then I'd look out the window and realize that it was 6am and I had to be at work in 3 hours. Ugh.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 29 June 2009 01:11 (sixteen years ago)

I think I've played Madden '09 maybe three times total since I posted that upthread.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 29 June 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

I'm getting better at it, but still stumbling through. Not sure if I'll buy it or not, but if I do it will be a used/rental copy.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 29 June 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

Full blown addiction now. I'm gonna have to buy this shit. When does Madden '10 come out?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 July 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

August 14, I guess.

Just took a peep at the Wii version, and they've made everything look cartoonish!! Bleh. Just because the only game system I own is a Wii doesn't mean I want to coddled like a 10 year old girl.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 2 October 2009 04:25 (sixteen years ago)

i took back my ps3 copy of 10. it is pretty horrible. the gameplay is basically identical to the last two versions except where they have broken it, e.g. the ball constantly popping into the air when the QB gets hit and d-linemen intercepting it without every seeing it, and running backs getting clobbered by 5 guys at once and still pulling through. i appreciate the effort to vary what happens on the field, but this kind of thing should happy maybe once a season, not every other drive. the presentation is great except it completely gets in the way of the game. after the first couple times the halftime show gets real tired, and there's no way to turn it off.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 22 August 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

i guess my one complaint so far is that they seem to have nerfed kickoff returns, cos i can't get the fucking ball out of my 20. punt returning has potential now tho, whereas it used to feel like it was just an opportunity for an unfortunate fumble.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 15 November 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 15 November 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

I don't even get why playing like this thrills them. Do they realize that CJ's game-breaking abilities are due to Madden's mechanics of rating various players and teams higher than others? Or do they think that they are just amazing at playing as Chris Johnson (just like every other person who does it). Comparable: Every week there's this trend where like 80% more players are playing as a totally different team than everyone played as last week. What accounts for it? Madden updated on Thursday and now the new team is the highest rated.

Mordy, Monday, 15 November 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

Well, it took me 182 games but I'm finally .500 doing Madden head to head online. 91/91 record.

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

Do you like this iteration of the game? I can't stand it.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

I love it, actually.

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

Defense + RB are way better.

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

I agree on RB but I can't play defense on it at all. How do you approach D?

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

Either I play the line until the pass (at which case I switch to the closest coverage and try to get a pick) or I play the FS.

Mordy, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

That's basically what I do, but I rarely generate any consistent pass rush.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

it's a timing thing with the pass rush. I'm actually pretty good at getting pressure, but the problem is if you defer playcalling to coaches, they blitz too much, and if you play an experienced QB, he gets the ball out quick. That's why sometimes I take back playcalling in difficult spells during a game.

think I racked up 8 or 9 sacks in one of the games....

pon de river, pon deez nuts (San Te), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

defending the run, though, I do struggle at that...

pon de river, pon deez nuts (San Te), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

What difficulty do you guys play on when you play the computer.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

this is the best version for a few years imo. they stripped out most of the crap they had been cluttering it with and finally made rushing ok instead of awful, which was a big deal. online seems to play better this year too. still lots of problems obv, but feel like for the first time they tried to tackle some of them instead of just bolting some gaudy garbage onto the same old shit.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

All Pro I think (whichever one is the second most difficult). I like to play on All Madden normally but since it's been so many years since I last played Madden (2007 for the XBox) I'm having to get used to it again.

figure I need to get a little less turnover prone before I can turn it up this time.

pon de river, pon deez nuts (San Te), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

yea honestly I've not been a fan of Madden for years as some of the decisions were o_O (like the year they introduced the passing 'cone' to look off receivers), but I love this version. It actually has the most realistic feel of any Madden I've ever played.

There's still some weirdness here and there in the playcalling but hey it's a Madden game.

pon de river, pon deez nuts (San Te), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

although is it just me, or can you not challenge Touchdowns? Like there've been at least two touchdowns that I thought were questionable (ie, receiver out of bounds), and I've gone to challenge and the option has not been there like it normally is....

pon de river, pon deez nuts (San Te), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

(and there were more than 2 minutes in the quarter at the time)

four months pass...

anyone tried the demo? i am unsure. it seems like they have made some real nice improvements to player movements and interaction, especially blocking, but it is very hard to tell because EA have fixed the difficulty on pre-school level, i assume not to scare away morons, and so every time i hand the ball off i just walk through the defense. on a similar note, i can't tell if the fact that clay matthews got a sack every time cutler dropped back was because of the difficulty level or because they have fucked something up. i think it is a step forward, but there is a very real possibility that whatever seems to have been fixed is just broken in a different way. the demo is basically pretty unhelpful but i guess i was always going to buy this shit anyway.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 29 August 2011 12:23 (fourteen years ago)

I guess Madden is going to give the Iggles an insanely high rating and every cheeser on the internet is suddenly going to become a Philadelphia fan.

Mordy, Monday, 29 August 2011 12:33 (fourteen years ago)

last year they changed the ratings a lot during the year. i was mostly using atlanta because you can't use the pats without an avalanche of abuse, and suddenly part way thru the season every fucking idiot online was atlanta, and it turned out it was because the most recent roster update had them as the best rated team.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 29 August 2011 12:40 (fourteen years ago)

mord, you are xbox, right?

There NEEDS to be some competition as this series is kinda dead now

http://www.nohighscores.com/2012/08/24/madden-13-early-hours-impressions/

Mordy, Friday, 31 August 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

that's interesting. i kinda want more impressions from ppl to calibrate my own against. i have the doubt that, what if it is just different to what i'm used to and i'm just being a kneejerk asshole about it, but trying it again i just hate how fast and frictionless it all feels. with so much physicality in football the game has no sense of mass to the moving parts. rushing was horrible, when they had begun to make some progress with that with the old engine, and passing was no great shakes. the play selection mechanics seem to be more cumbersome somehow, too many button presses.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 31 August 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

when was the last time zone coverage worked at all in a madden game? 2004?

that is fairly realistic tho. numerous times this year i have seen him come on the field for one down on a read option and fall forward for 3 yards, and he hasn't tebowed once!

i am playing the new demo. it seems okay? need to play around more but running game seems a little off, i'm either tackled by 3 dudes in the backfield or i've got 5 yards before i see anyone, and no in between. i am at least not horrified this time, so far.

I like a lot of things about this version! I suck at it though, as usual. I miss the old days when the game was easy.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/9/5/4691010/breaking-madden-clarence-beeftank-jaguars

BEEFTANK, meanwhile, set an NFL record with 346 rushing yards in a single game, shattering the previous mark of 296. He rushed 42 times, thereby averaging 8.2 yards per carry. I could only call designed runs so many times before the Chiefs' defense started to get wise, so I had to change it up with a lot of passing plays that were repurposed as improvised runs. Roll-out passing plays were particularly effective, not because they fooled anyone, but because they allowed BEEFTANK to swing to the outside right from the start of the play.
