I have managed to completely avoid football talking heads for the most part, so I have no idea anymore who is really going to be good other than the usual suspects. And to be honest, the usual suspects usually are there.

I am playing fantasy for the first time in years in a league that has been around since the mid-90s from guys I went to college. I got name brand players, but I never do that good at this stuff and when I do everyone gets injured in the last month of the season. I think my WR's are a bit weak. I did get a couple of young WR in Zay Flowers and KJ Osborn in later rounds just in case they get to playing a bunch.

Eh, I think it just should emphasize that protecting the ball is important and on the 1 yard line, even more so. The offense has so many gimme rules that makes it easy, this is one that it don't.

Pretty much you fumble it into the end zone, yer fucted. At least the way the rule is written, if you recover the fumble, it goes back to where it happened. That was changed by the old famous Stabler/Caspar "holy roller" play.

sure but square that with the fact that the ball only needs to slightly cross the plane for a TD which is why so many players dive for it like that when they get close. having such a thin line between touchdown and turnover feels weird to me, I don't really like the idea of turnovers where the other team doesn't even have to touch the ball. it should be like a 15 yard penalty or something similar to what happens when the kickoff is out of bounds

That said, I have been middling on Fields since he was drafted myself. Running QBs can look great in stretches and then completely lose it. Don't doubt that the Bears total dysfunction is big part of that situation, but I also tend to doubt if Fields would have gone to say the Eagles he would have success like Jalen Hurts.

I kinda think Stroud might finally be the decent OSU pro QB, but he also looks and plays much more like a trad drop back QB and is pretty darn accurate throwing the ball.

I've seen this look before from college guys who get rejected by the girl they like at the party. where your feelings are really raw but you don't want to appear vulnerable so instead you get all snappy and pissed off even though you can't hide the emotion on your face. its not a good place to be and I think a head coach has to be tougher than that. truth is LaFleur's Packers teams are getting their asses kicked a lot, even during Rodgers' two MVP years they had a lot of games like this. in fact all 3 of his playoff losses were games where the offense looked completely broken and didn't get on track until it was much too late. that never happened during the McCarthy years. something is clearly wrong here dude you gotta figure it out

main problems for the packers offense seem to be: leaky offensive line, overconfidence in love's ability to make something out of nothing, lack of committal to the running game (this probably because jones is coming off injury and dillon just has no juice)

Purdy on the other hand went 20 for 21 last week and carved up a very good Dallas defense this week, and as he approaches an entire season worth of stats (counting playoffs) his numbers actually look real close to one of Aaron Rodgers' MVP seasons. I don't wanna jinx the guy by pointing this out, but on the other hand I don't think there's ever been a QB putting up numbers like this who didn't turn out to be really good

QB is really one position which seems to come with a higher possibility of being a one-year wonder, particularly if you weren't drafted or signed to be "the guy" and you come in mid-year due to injury or benching. QB is just basically the hardest job and having little to no expectations can initially have the QB playing loose and achieving immediate success due to lack of game film or schematics on him, and then the moment they achieve repeated success across multiple weeks to months, now expectations are setting in and their strengths become crutches where they become less adaptable. whereas those that are the de facto starter from Week 1 are already facing the pressure from Day 1 and facing defenses that are already gameplanned against them so if they achieve success they probably already had to be pretty flexible and patient with themselves.

Brian Griese really only had two good years. 2000 with the Broncos, 8 yards per attempt, 19 TDs vs only 4 INTs, 102.9 passer rating.

Having watched every one of Purdy's games, he looks and feels like the real deal. Niner fans have been apologetic over play far inferior to his going back to 2004, and seeing Purdy play is a bit of a shocker for us.

His first real time in a game, that Miami game last year, where he walked in down 7-3, then completely overwhelmed them, was like a light getting flipped on. The following weak, beating that Tampa team, I knew then he was probably the best QB we've had since Garcia. Now I am thinking he's the best since Young. Niners haven't scored like this since 1995.

All you gotta do is watch Jimmy G play last year with the same skill players. He was good, they won, but the games were still close for the most part. Brock's come in and basically turned us into the offensive machine I remember from my youth. Literally haven't seen an offense this consistently good in red and gold since the 90's

If he wins a ring in the next year or two the sky's the limit. The dynastic greats often win one young (see: Montana, Brady, Mahomes, hell throw in Posey and Jeter for baseball comps)

Until then, who knows what his ceiling looks like, but from this vantage point I can't see it yet. Gonna be a sweet ride!

Style wise, the player that Purdy was reminding me of because of the efficiency was Chad Pennington. Little different situation as Pennington sat for a couple of years, but the backup out of nowhere and just be so efficient was the thing.

That team had Barry Sanders and Herman Moore, they had some talent on offense. Herman Moore was pretty darn good. Without looking it up, I think he was one of the first players to get 100 catches in a year.

Man, Pennington could have been a potential legend, but fell to injury.

But at some point you can say "just loaded with talent everywhere though, I think a bunch of QBs could look good playing with them to an extent" about any of the amazing teams of the past with HoF QBs.

Usually health holds these dudes back far more than "talent to throw to". Brady did what he did in large part due to the fact that he was the GOAT of durability. Jerry Rice follows a similar path there. Speaking of - you don't see many question Montana and Young's careers and worthiness due to them being lucky enough to throw to Rice!

What I'm saying is Purdy to my eyes is unequivocally a pro-bowl caliber QB (our first since at least Garcia). The question to me now is whether he is a championship caliber QB.

I kinda think Brian Griese and Chad Pennington both were guys that hurt their throwing shoulder and was never quite the same afterwards. That seems to happen to alot Qb's. That's also what happened to Tim Couch.

I've said it before around here, I don't think people give enough providence to the just sheer luck of being drafted by the right team in the NFL, more so than even in the NBA or MLB. In the NBA or MLB, you can be on a crappy club and get your numbers, in the NFL, it can get you hurt.

There are lots of really good players that spend their whole careers in defense or on the offensive lines o total crap clubs and kind of retire a bit in anonymity.

Take a guy like Andrew Whitworth, who was always a really good player, but I got to think without him getting notoriety winning a Superbowl that last season with the Rams - he's not doing TV now. (That said, there are a LOT of ex-Bengals that work in football TV media.)

If this is critiquing his accuracy it's flat out wrong. Dude was as accurate as Rodgers or Brady Sunday night, dropping in elite level accuracy on throws over 20-30 yards down field all night. See: First Kittle TD, Aiyuk completion that was called back due to holding, and the third Kittle TD for starters. Multiple passes over the middle were as elite throws as anyone in the league can throw when hitting a window pane target.

If it's critiquing his arm strength this is also dumb. Dude is leading the league in deep ball accuracy after the last game too, overtaking Tua.

Dude is doing anything you'd ask any of the best QBs to do in the league at this stage and doing it without making many mistakes against (alleged) top flight defenses like Dallas.

They did say that Josh Hobbs graduated with honors and 4.0 in aeronautical engineering at UT during the broadcast, so the guy was at least a bit more of a student than your average football player.

They make so much of how complex all this football really is, but in part it is mostly the calls that are the hard thing to know. Peyton Manning in one of those NFL shows was talking about for all the weird calls in general, the offenses he ran generally used only about 9-10 plays for most of the game.

Eagles were trolling the Cowboys in giving them some hope only to have the Dallas blow it. Get that fumble and have it first and ten at the 12 then back up to 3rd and 26 for the last play of the game. I don't quite get the first 4th and goal call, since they were down 2 scores, seems to me that is one you just take the field goal.

CJ Stroud looks to be the real deal. Don't quite get what happened to their kicker and kind of surprised the punter did not do the last kickoff. Running back got a touch back on his kick though.

Allen kind of balances out some of his mistakes by making plays and running out of problems with his physical ability. Make no mistake, the Bills would really suck if they had a crap QB.

The plays that don't really end up doing anything in the stat sheet for a guy like Allen are the ones where he somehow Houdini's his way out of -9 yard sack and then runs out of bounds for like no gain. Dudes like him can do this 3-4 times a game.

Zach Wilson is very often a deer in the headlights and holds onto the ball too long, but on a couple of those, he looked up and was already being tackled. They would be a 'bit' better with Rodgers, but it would probably be more incremental than you think.

With sports betting coming to the state, I have been reading up on how lines are set etc. and one thing I have seen noted in a couple of places is in a betting line, the difference between say a starting good Qb and thing Zach Wilson is only like 7 points or so.

This was confusing, even appalling, even for the nightmarishly bad 2021 Lions: Boyle had never performed well as a quarterback in a non-exhibition setting in his adult life. His numbers as a collegiate quarterback during his three seasons in the extreme dysfunction of Bob Diaco's Connecticut Huskies were shockingly bad: In 25 games Boyle completed fewer than half of his passes, averaged fewer than five yards per attempt, and threw for one touchdown versus 15 interceptions.

Boyle transferred away from Connecticut after the 2015 season, sat out 2016, and then took over as the starter at Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference. In 11 games as a Colonel, Boyle tossed 13 interceptions against just 11 touchdowns for a shitty four-win FCS team of approximately zero consequence. How on Earth this earned Boyle a tryout for the Green Bay Packers is anyone's guess, but it must be said that Boyle, at a lean 6-foot-4, at least looks quarterbackish, by the very most tired and unimaginative of standards. Boyle's football career was already unbelievably blessed by the time he found himself starting at quarterback for Detroit. He was supremely shitty across three starts, throwing six picks and leading the Lions to three losses.

You might've expected this to be enough to prove that he should not be anywhere in the line of succession for another quarterbacking job but you would be wrong as hell! Boyle scored a job with the 2022 Bears, and even got onto the field for Week 18, where he completed two of eight passing attempts for 33 yards and two interceptions. Once again you might've thought NFL personnel types had learned this lesson. No! Boyle was back under center for the Jets Sunday, after Wilson was yanked in a blowout loss to the Bills. Boyle completed seven of 14 passing attempts for just 33 yards, and dished another interception. He stinks so bad, man!

Gotta assume this was just done out of frustration I mean I know Wilson sucks but Boyle is the sort of quarterback you only put in when you’re trying to lose. It’s wild not only has he been bad at every level he’s also 30 so not much hope of him getting any better. I don’t know if a team that’s technically still in contention has ever started a QB this bad.
