my first fantasy football experience was literally 40 years ago, when i spent three seasons finishing a distant second to my little league baseball coach, better known as steelers tattoo guy. dude was insane -- we drafted individual defensive players (andre tippett!) and he knew *everything*
i just bought street & smiths. nabbed jerry rice early. had joe morris and his 20 TD for the NYFG in 1986.
no offense but it sucks deeply if your kid can't translate his excitement into something rewarding that's not essentially gambling. and if he starts rooting against the packers because he's got some TE playing against them, that is the worst
― mookieproof, Friday, 30 August 2024 04:16 (four months ago) link
the whole idea is just really appealing to him, I kinda knew once I explained the concept that it was something he could get obsessed with. just watching his eyes light up when I explained like "each player gets his own score, then you add them together and go against the other player", he was way into it. I knew I had to let him do it. he plays this baseball game on the Switch a lot which lets you draft a team and he spends more time doing that now than playing the actual game. its funny too since its one of those games where most of the players are fake but there are some real life HOFers in there. so when I'm doing it with him he's like "you look Robin Yount over Mighty Goat?? what is wrong with you!??"
the idea that he might have to root for one of his players against the Packers has not yet occurred to him, lol

― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Friday, 30 August 2024 12:10 (four months ago) link
I never did much fantasy sports. I some how did not get in the one my circle of college ‘bros’ did until last season and they have had it going since 96. Last season was the first league turnover they had had since 99. Nerds.
I did play fantasy baseball for a couple years on ILB. It’s way more work.
My thing that I did a ton back in the 80s was playing Statis Pro football that was put out by Sports Illustrated. I had the baseball game for a couple seasons too. I still have two of the football games both of which still had the Street and Smiths NFL previews for like 86, 87 & 88. Those are real fun to look at.
We did actual gambling some when I was a teenager. Those old school football cards where you would have the spread for the weeks games in ncaa and nfl. You e we would like pay $2 Bucks and pick 4 games off the card. Did ok on those. I grew up a bunch of pro sports following knuckleheads as a kid. Funny thing was my buddies dad was a cop that would take in the cards.
They were printed in Red Key In - A little dot in the map outside Muncie and as I understood these betting cards went to Detroit, Chicago etc in the area.

Genuinely might be the worst move I’ve ever seen a pro sports franchise make:
1) they gave away the picks that turned the Texans from the worst team in the league to a playoff team in one year
2) it also made them get rid of the closest thing they’ve had to a franchise quarterback in 30 years, only to see him become a franchise QB for a different team
3) he’s been legitimately awful, not only has he missed a ton of time (in part due to the suspension they knew was coming) but even when healthy he’s been Mark Sanchez-level, can’t throw deep, can’t really run either like he used to, seems destined for a bunch of 25-40 for 120 yards type games
4) it’s not like the Browns are hopeless, their defense is incredible, if the offense was league average they’d be a contender, as evidenced by the fact that Joe Flacco (who was retired!) took em to the playoffs last year
5) they blew decades of goodwill, their franchise has been so cursed and hapless people started rooting for them on principle, now they’re known as the team willing to blow up everything and pay big money for a serial sex offender
Just a total fucking disaster from every angle, really sorry for anyone who chooses to root for this team

i had always assumed that the NFL didn't play on fridays/saturdays (until late december) because it didn't want to compete with/cannibalize its free feeder system (high school/college football). which is lol naive; the league might have cared about that 50 years ago but i can't imagine it does now
anyway i turns out that they are prevented by law (for antitrust purposes) from doing so!
the 1961 Sports Broadcasting Act effectively bars the NFL from airing a major part of its schedule Friday evenings or on Saturdays between the second Friday in September and the second Saturday in December.

this is from the new book by Ta-Nehisi Coates Rules, The Thread which . . . i actually had nightmares about darryl stingley back then. and yet i still follow football
When I was seven years old, my mother purchased a copy of Sports Illustrated for me. She taught me to read before I entered school, and encouraged the practice however she could. And what more encouragement could there be than this issue of Sports Illustrated, which featured my hero, Tony Dorsett, running back for the Dallas Cowboys. This was 1983, an era of American football when running backs seemed as large as champions pulled out of Greek myth. How could a man of Earl Campbell's might move so fast, racing past one defender and then staving in the chest of another? How could Eric Dickerson run so high, against all convention, bounding through holes in the defense, an obvious target that was never caught? These days I will occasionally watch an old clip of Roger Craig, through will alone, breaking off a forty-six-yard run against the Rams, or Marcus Allen reversing field in the Super Bowl. But back then, in an unwired world, stories, words, histories—none of it could be gotten on demand. If you bore witness to such a feat—as I did with Allen—it lived in memory until the broadcast gods decided you could see it again. And so a magazine featuring the exploits of one of these heroes was not just, to me, an assembly of words and stories. It was a treasure.Because I really did believe that Tony Dorsett was magic. He was five foot eight, built ordinary as one of my uncles. But when he slid the lone-starred helmet over his head, he transformed into something untouchable. I remember him darting through the defense, shifting direction at full speed, dancing, sprinting the length of the field, and outrunning an entire team. But whatever my affinity for Dorsett, this is not what I remember about that issue. In fact, until a few months ago, I'd forgotten that Dorsett was even on the cover at all, because deeper in the magazine, I found a story so unsettling, so horrific even, that it blotted out every adjacent detail. The story was titled "Where Am I? It Has to Be a Bad Dream." Its subject was Darryl Stingley, who'd once been a wide receiver. I thought of wide receivers as mythical too—contortionists like Wes Chandler, extending back to snag a ball bouncing off into the ether, or acrobats like Lynn Swann, dancing in the air. I absorbed these exploits on Sunday mornings through highlights curated by the NFL itself. But a magazine like Sports Illustrated existed beyond the garden, out in the street where journalism and literature collided. And out there was neither magic nor myth—only the realest of monsters. And so I read the true story of Stingley, who back in 1978 took a hit on a slant route and woke up in a hospital. The story began there, in the hospital—with Stingley unable to move a single limb, unable to call to his mother or wipe the tears running down his face. In an instant, the contortionist had been rendered quadriplegic. Only a few paragraphs in, I wanted to put the magazine down forever, to escape the story, but I was held fast by forces I could not then understand. I knew that there was something different in the storytelling, something in its style, that pulled me toward it with the gravity of a star, until I was there, I was on the field, yelling, pleading with Stingley to watch out for the incoming hit, and then in the hospital, right next to him, helpless to relieve the horror blooming in his eyes as he realized his fate. And then the star became a black hole, and I crossed an event horizon where I was no longer imagining myself there with Stingley, but was Stingley himself, and it was my body pinned to the bed, and the spokes were drilled into my skull, and it was I crying out to a heedless god.

Wow. What a writer.
His referencing that Sports Illustrated in the pre-internet days reminds me how much my early sports fandom and knowledge is founded in the sports books my parents got for me from the Scholastic Books catalog in probably first through third grades (78-80). These were thin paperbacks recounting famous sports stories of the previous generations: Willis Reed in Game 7, Hank Aaron's 715, Pete Rose's 44, Jim Thorpe, etc. etc. I read these books repeatedly as a kid and the heroes in them sounded like mythology.

― mookieproof, Monday, 21 October 2024 01:33 (two months ago) link
Football media loves Tomlin as he is good copy. Lots of Steelers fans out there seem to think less of him, but hey no great Qb- you don’t win big.
― The Artist formerly known as Earlnash, Monday, 21 October 2024 01:40 (two months ago) link
Ouch Sauce…
I kinda would not changed QB but I think the fact that Fields did not throw for 150 yards the last 2 games is probably why they made change.
It’s a risk but Wilson has not played great but he is already up to 145 yards.
Either way this is going to be the game on line, radio and tv being discussed. And thank god the Cowboys are not involved.

― mookieproof, Monday, 21 October 2024 02:57 (two months ago) link
Wilson seemed pretty clueless the later seasons in Seattle and Denver. How it all went down even with all that money hurt the ego.
Dudes got to know he has to have a second act if he wants a gold jacket. If it just turns to crud and he does not get that other chapter, he is basically McNabb with a ring.
McNabbs flame out after he left Philly and his post football kinda left his rep in tatters. Wilson was a better stats guy and got the ring, but how many QBs get in?
― The Artist formerly known as Earlnash, Monday, 21 October 2024 03:04 (two months ago) link
wilson was actually fine with the broncos last year, despite his coach actively hating him/using him as an excuse for losses
neither fields nor russell have too many options apart from pickens, who has become insane in the way that elite receivers become insane -- every single passing play should target me! -- without actually being an elite receiver
― mookieproof, Monday, 21 October 2024 03:16 (two months ago) link
Russell Wilson bullshit definitely still in effect though
Jets struggles have been legitimately funny, like as far as "suddenly unlikeable superstar attempts to create superteam for a cursed franchise" stories go you can't really draw it up better than this. three of their last four have been extremely winnable games and the other they nearly came back and won anyway. not only are they losing but Rodgers is getting his ass beat out there

Jets GM sacked lmao
hard to think of a more pathetic final chapter for a slam-dunk HOFer, even Jordan's Wizards were basically a .500 team, with Rodgers its an entire year lost to injury and then one so bad everyone got fired

hell even the FAVRE year, they almost won the division and just choked it away last minute.

jets were 30-64 with joe douglas as GM so it’s certainly warranted, but

Supposedly the fired him now to begin the search without him in the building "out of respect" after utilizing his services to trade for Adams and get Reddick in the building. Same article had sources state it would be highly unlikely Rodgers is back next year. His money isn't guaranteed.
Good luck Jets. Gonna be a dumpster fire for the next 10 years too. And Woody might take a job with Trump so his brother would be back running the joint.

Rodgers has thrown for 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 starts. His 50.9 QBR ranks 25th out of 32 qualified quarterbacks. He isn't playing terribly, but he isn't elevating the offense, either. It does speak to the state of the Jets' offensive ineptitude that their 18.5 points per game this season is their highest since they averaged 20.8 points per game in 2018.

"I like what we did there," Eberflus said. "Again, once it's under seven seconds, you're going to call a timeout there -- actually under 12 and then really you don't have an option because it's third to fourth, you have to throw it into the end zone then."To me it's -- I think we handled it the right way, I do believe that you just rerack the play, get it in bounds and call timeout, and that's why we held it and didn't work out the way we wanted it to."

I think what happened against the Packers was a situation where you would fire him at the end of the season, what happened yesterday was the situation where you fire him immediately so it’s good that they didn’t hesitate.
― omar little, Friday, 29 November 2024 20:33 (one month ago) link
otm, not only what happened yesterday but his terrible press conference this morning too. I could see him surviving the season if he had taken accountability, said the loss was on him, etc. But he did the absolute opposite of that.
― octobeard, Friday, 29 November 2024 22:06 (one month ago) link
right I mean tbh its kind of understandable, the gameplan changed several times within that last minute. they went from thinking touchdown to lets just get a few more yards for the FG, maybe they can even run 3 plays if they do it right, then Williams gets sacked, they're out of FG range, and the clock is ticking and he just doesn't know what to do. I think he's actually right that you probably don't wanna call timeout right away, you wanna run your best 10 yard play and then call it, but you got a rookie QB out there and a coach who isn't really good at thinking on his feet, they just let a few too many seconds tick off, hell they snap it at :09 they're probably fine. so many moving parts and so little experience, it's kind of natural they might screw it up, might've been refreshing to hear Eberfluss say "yeah we biffed it" instead of offering an explanation which makes no sense

Yeah obv Caleb didn't do what he expected, but the Captain Save-an-Eberflus I talked to yesterday (a surprising number!) who basically said his hands were tied, like...your rookie QB just got sacked, there has to be a set point on the clock that Eberflu decides in advance "if the ball isn't snapped by this time, I call timeout and we regroup".
Even if you fuck up and there's too little time to do two plays, wouldn't you want your hail mary to be drawn up and discussed on the sideline rather than haphazardly run?
― her pal Santa falls to the floor (Neanderthal), Friday, 29 November 2024 23:27 (one month ago) link
Lions & Chiefs both escaped with wins by opponent blunders. Raiders center just blew it worse than the bears QB by snapping early when they were in FG range & down by two.

Chargers at Chiefs: You will not know the Chargers had a winning season until Wild Card Weekend arrives and you’re like, Wait a second, the fuck are the Chargers doing here? That’s why they pay Jimmy Harbaugh the big bucks, my friend. Just like this week, they will lose that playoff game 19-17.

The Athletic article:
The New York Jets were nearing the finish line on a deal to acquire wide receiver Jerry Jeudy from the Denver Broncos last offseason, but the trade fell apart when Jets owner Woody Johnson nixed the idea over Jeudy’s player rating in the “Madden NFL” video game, according to multiple team and league sources.
Jeudy was eventually traded to the Cleveland Browns instead and became a 1,000-yard receiver there. The Jets, meanwhile, have slumped to 4-10 amid a disappointing season.
Those disappointments have resulted in Johnson orchestrating the firings of head coach Robert Saleh five games into the season and general manager Joe Douglas after Week 12.
In September, Johnson suggested to a room full of Jets coaches and officials that the team bench future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, according to multiple team sources. Instead, a week later Johnson helped pull the strings to land All-Pro wideout Davante Adams to serve as Rodgers’ top receiver, a role that could have been held by Jeudy.
The proposed Jeudy trade wasn’t the only time Johnson cited “Madden” ratings when evaluating players, according to the source. The owner pushed back on signing free-agent guard John Simpson in the offseason due to his “awareness” rating in the video game. The Jets signed Simpson anyway, and he has had a solid season.
To some, the reference to the video game ratings is a sign of Johnson allowing his teenage sons, Brick and Jack, to influence the franchise.
“When we’re discussing things, you’ll hear Woody cite something that Brick or Jack read online that’s being weighed equally against whatever opinion someone else in the department has,” said one Jets executive.
Current and former players and coaches have also said Brick and Jack have brought friends — male and female — into the locker room, where Woody Johnson, his wife, Suzanne Ircha Johnson, and his sons have criticized players.
In another instance, on Halloween night this season, Rodgers entered the locker room with a game ball prepared to be given to interim coach Jeff Ulbrich, who just recorded his first win. Instead, Brick Johnson took it upon himself to award a game ball to wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
Woody Johnson then gave Ulbrich the ball Rodgers had been holding. Multiple players said the energy felt drained out of the room. “It was the most awkward, cringe-worthy, brutal experience,” one player said.

god it'd be easy to sabotage the Jets simply by having a connect in the ratings department at Madden

Just realized with Rodgers not throwing a TD yesterday and him being pretty unlikely to get picked up next season, if he can’t get one against the Fins next week he’ll end his career with 499 TDs. And really who knows if they’ll even start him, might as well see what Tyrod can do over a full game right?
― frogbs, Monday, 30 December 2024 17:03 (six days ago) link
i can understand why he'd do it -- it must be pretty frustrating working for an organization like the jets! -- but lol at rodgers taking public shots about 'being released by a teenager' and 'ask woody' if he'll be back next season as if it were the team's dysfunction at fault for his performance rather than the fact that he is utterly cooked
also seems like the kind of thing that might get you spitefully benched when you still need one TD pass to reach 500!
