I guess Florida State thought since they were playing in Ireland that it was a bowl game and they did not need to go.
I was surprised that Georgia Tech won that one.

― 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 21 October 2024 18:11 (one year ago)
i think even if they could afford to fire him they wouldn't because after last season the fanbase is too invested in him being the savior. they will have no choice to hit the portal hard again to be competitive bcuz their roster just isn't good, and that might work. but if it doesn't then i'll be very interested to see what happens
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 21 October 2024 18:20 (one year ago)
in spite of messy officiating, fans throwing bottles on the field, dropped balls, and interceptions, UGA/Texas was a lot of fun to watch
― Brad C., Monday, 21 October 2024 18:34 (one year ago)
xp They improved each year under Norvell until this season, so he probably is a good coach. Their portal ranking has been fairly consistent, but it seems (at a glance) they took more proven players in '23 compared to '24 - more guys with T ranking > HS ranking.
― 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 21 October 2024 18:43 (one year ago)
Miami have been extremely entertaining this year. Every close game has at least one controversial late call. This most recent one with Louisville was clearly not a fumble, though. The hit on Fernando Mendoza was the definition of targeting, however. Cal were also screwed by the refs in South Bend two years ago, so I feel quite badly for them.
― 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 21 October 2024 18:51 (one year ago)
i definitely think norvell is a good coach, but he's at a school where they expect you to be better than just good. there's still a lot of evidence that you need to recruit HS at a really high level to compete for a national title, regardless of how well you portal, and norvell has never recruited high school well at FSU, even last year. recruiting people have been calling this out for years but he was able to paper over it w/ great portal additions covering the last two seasons. this year they struck out and there is no base talent level to fall back on and the result is the worst season in school history basically. i think his issue is that he's at a job that expects consistent excellence, but in order to be consistently excellent you very likely cannot be relying on the portal bringing in half your starting line up every season
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 21 October 2024 18:54 (one year ago)
This most recent one with Louisville was clearly not a fumble, though.
(as a miami fan) the thing that was annoying about this is that, in reality, a call wasn't even made. that was standard practice in these exact situations now -- the refs "call" it a touchdown bcuz the rules still stipulate that a call has to be made on the field, but in reality the refs are doing nothing and just waiting to consult the video. the call was always the correct one, which was an incomplete pass. nothing was actually "overturned"
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 21 October 2024 18:58 (one year ago)
yes, I agree they would have ruled it an incomplete pass in the moment if video review weren't an option.

i think georgia and ohio state are still on a different level than anyone else in terms of talent and physical attributes of their players. but their QBs are not that great, or in the case of beck haven't been playing that great. teams like miami and oregon have lesser overall talent but still enough talent to beat them when combined w/ superior QB play. having to beat both ohio state and georgia would be tough for any team though.

acab, of course, but if you put cops in charge of security when dozens of large men in helmets and pads start fighting, them using pepper spray seems inevitable and conceivably even warranted

Oregon completed the flip of five-star Ohio State cornerback pledge Na'eem Offord Wednesday afternoon, gaining a stunning commitment from the nation's top-ranked defender hours into the early signing period.Offord, No. 4 in the ESPN 300, had been the highest-rated prospect in the Buckeyes' 2025 class since Feb. 4. But the defensive back from Birmingham, Alabama, spent the fall flirting with potential moves to Oregon and Auburn all the way into the early signing period before flipping his pledge to the Ducks on Wednesday in a ceremony at Alabama's A.H. Parker High School.Offord is now the second-ranked member of Oregon's 2025 class, trailing only five-star wide receiver Darkorien Moore (No. 3 in the ESPN 300), who signed with the Ducks Wednesday morning, and follows Cal quarterback flip Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (No. 18 pocket passer) as the program's second signing day addition.Offord visited Oregon early in the regular season and returned to Ohio State in Week 14. But Offord visited no school more frequently in his recruitment than Auburn -- most recently on Nov. 23 -- and the Tigers entered the early signing period appearing to be the most likely flip destination for the 6-foot-2, defensive back before Offord's Wednesday commitment.

I gave up college football a few seasons ago, but I learned from my dad last weekend that the SEC doesn't even have divisions anymore? It's just one giant amorphous blob of schools that play each other whenever.
I was a Tide fan all my life, but it seems perfectly fine to me that they've come back down to earth post-Saban. Most schools don't even get one era like that, and Alabama's had two. That's plenty.

i think it's cool that players get a cut now but watching the whole thing turn into every single player being on a one-year contract is both incredible to watch and not ultimately sustainable

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/06/06/house-ncaa-settlement/“The agreement resolves three antitrust suits against the NCAA — House, Carter and Hubbard — all of which challenged restrictions on athlete compensation. It was hashed out by attorneys for the plaintiffs and six defendants: the NCAA, SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 and Pac 12. The settlement includes almost $2.8 billion in back damages for former and current athletes (and their lawyers). It also creates a new economic model for top-tier college sports, permitting any Division I school to pay their athletes up to about $20.5 million this coming academic year. That cap will rise incrementally throughout the 10-year life of the settlement.”

The hold on the final play really must be seen. However, we had many chances to ice that game and blew it. Every year with a new D coordinator must start with 2 losses it seems.
― 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 14 September 2025 03:55 (four months ago)
But that hold will haunt me. TAMU's Bisontis does a full-body-extension, touchdown-saving shoestring tackle of Hinish, only Bistontis is on offense and that is not allowed at all.

― Heez, Sunday, 14 September 2025 10:55 (four months ago)
Gut punch for Vols fans, they had them beat and let them off the hook. Georgia does not look anywhere close as physically dominating as they did a couple years back. They are still good, but their d-line is nowhere close this year- and that was a big part of why they won it all.

ND crushed the Razorbacks at home. I like seeing SEC teams get beat bad by Notre Dame, rare as it is.
IU was not on TV around here, but glad they hung on and got the win at Iowa. That can be a tough place to play, Hoosiers have not won very often there (Really anywhere usually).
Been a while since the Rambling Wreck was undefeated this late in the season. Georgia Tech is weird as they used to be solid in both BBall and Football all the time for years and they have not been that good for a while in either. Got to figure that Atlanta talent goes to GA all now or out of town for college?

That Diego Pavia is fun to watch play for Vanderbilt. Seeing that short guy in #2, you kinda get a bit of Doug Flutie vibes out of him as he scrambles around. Does not have that kind of arm though, Flutie could really chuck it.

The not yet pros that yet are pros had a good day today. I was kinda under the weather and watched it on and off all day.
Nostradamus award to Joel Klatt for talking up something like "got to watch the Buckeyes between the two 40 yard markers, they like to take a deep shot in those situations" and then the Buckeyes bomb a 50 yard TD in the next snap. Baller move.
IU looked pretty darn good. Their backs are very fast. QB Fernando is very accurate and I kinda get a Chad Pennington vibe off him, the dude is just on the money on anything under 15 yards. Mac Jones was that way at Alabama.Got to love the one DB who broke up the TD attempt on 4th down in the end zone against Maryland, who then mimes taking the ref's flag and putting in his pocket. That was a pretty original one.
They must have put the good sh!t in the Gator AID today as they were throwing down on Georgia. There was some nasty hitting, no penalty happening there. Going to take alot of Jelloshots to make that game go away.
UK winning like it is 1952 out there. Winning ugly is still winning.
I slept through and did not see much of the Texas/Vanderbilt game, but that is definitely a highlight one worth checking out. I got to wonder if Pavia can make it work at the next level, I kinda hope so, he is fun to watch.

That IU catch was a bit like the Dwight Clark play. Incredible play, easily the craziest end to an IU game since Dave Schnell led the upset of Michigan back in '87.
Diego Pavia is a f-n legend. Definitely an athlete that seems to be totally maxing out what he can do with his physical abilities.
Oregon and Iowa was a good fugly game, a slobberknocker to use one of Madden's terms. Probably did not play too many games of that style in the PAC10 over the last few years.

I saw a couple people breaking down IU tape online including Urban Meyer and they seem to be universally impressed by how disciplined they are at doing their job and plan on the play. They were showing plays and showing how players just setting contain set them up to for success as it was working like it should on the chalk board.
That one guy that had the big catches has been like their 3rd down wideout, so it was pretty impressive coming off to replace their best guy and playing like that.
I've seen ALOT of IU football and they always seemed a bit slower and smaller than who they play, this is not the case today. They would have some individual players of quality, but not good or at least average across the board.
The score is a bit closer than you might think, considering the Hoosiers dominated the clock.

nd people will always wonder if the committee would have still put in miami if UVA won. I still think alabama, the 5th sec seed with 3 losses, including a loss to a horrible FSU team and a 21 point loss last night, is the weirdest inclusion. Particularly when the committee dropped byu for losing in a game where they at least had a lead for awhile.

Notre Dame’s opt-out crosses a new line — and college football is worse off for it
this is true but misses the point
having pretended otherwise for decades, college football is now very clearly all about chasing money; why should anyone expect notre dame players to risk their bodies playing BYU in a meaningless game that gains them nothing
oh no, the sanctity of three dozen meaningless [ridiculous sponsor] bowl games

I'm sure they would have played a bowl game if espn hadn't strung them along for 2 months. They are treating disney poorly because they were treated poorly by disney. Yes, it is a pro-player move. Last week, a Stanford player gave Love a cheap knee to the ribs that ended his Heisman hopes. They could make millions for disney by playing in a game. They could play Love for one series so that he breaks an ND rushing record, and then he could disappear from the game without comment. But why extend the money making farce? It's a protest not a pity party, and football needs more of this to become something better more quickly.

My life is so lame, I sat around a couple evenings listening to tunes and kinda sketched out a 64 team NCAA football super league.
8 divisions of 8 teams
12 game schedule7 games - play each team once in yer division. Divisions totally by region2 bye weeksMove season to start Labor day weekend.Allow teams to have 2 games with 'rivals' not in division (instate or like ND/USC- that might not be in same division.Rest of the schedule is based off strength of previous opponents.
24 team playoffs - 8 division champions get bye16 teams play in first round for right to play.
Round of 16- winning division advantage YOU GET HOME GAME
Gawd I'm a nerd.

there should be no conferences so large that everyone, each year, can't play everyone else (football)/can't play everyone home-and-home (basketball)
ND should obviously, if anything at all, be in the B1G 10 (although i'd grant them big east for hoops)
but college football, and maybe sports, is irretrievably broken
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 10 December 2025 04:20 (one month ago)
I think top level college football is basically a professional sport and really should be split off from all other athletics.
Then let the conferences go back to regional set up for everything else.
The games are often fantastic entertainment and the athletic skill and range of skills in football is really amazing.
Everything else around all football is the greasiest nasty world and a microcosm of our sick and corrupt society. I get it. I get a bit of shame at the whole thing but it is this goofball thing I have literally followed since I was 8 years old.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/47286996/fired-michigan-coach-sherrone-moore-charged-three-crimes
Prosecutors said Friday that Moore forced entry into the woman staff member's apartment and said, "I'm going to kill myself. I'm going to make you watch. My blood is on your hands. You ruined my life."
Moore appeared by videoconference at the arraignment, stating his name and clearly answering two questions with, "Yes, your honor." He wore a white jumpsuit, his expression sullen and his hands folded on his lap. He appeared to wince as the prosecutor went through the timeline of his actions.
First assistant prosecutor Kati Rezmierski detailed the timeline of Moore's actions after the firing, as he "barged his way" into the woman's apartment. He went to a drawer in the kitchen and "grabbed several butter knives and a pair of kitchen scissors" before threatening to take his own life.
The prosecutor also detailed that Moore had an "intimate relationship" with the woman he worked with for "a number of years" before she ended the relationship Monday.
The split prompted a flurry of calls and texts from Moore that the woman did not return. Moore is married to another woman, and they have three children.
Moore's actions in the wake of his former lover breaking up with him led her to go to officials at Michigan and detail their relationship. The school had previously investigated a tip about the situation, sources have told ESPN but could not prove it occurred.
The woman's admission and supporting evidence led the school to quickly dismiss Moore for cause, saying he violated both his contract and university policy. Michigan will not have to pay Moore the nearly $12.3 million remaining on his deal because he was fired for cause.
The woman called police after Moore barged into her apartment.
Rezmierski called Moore's behavior "a series of very, very threatening and intimidating and terrifying statements and behaviors."
Some of the conditions that are part of Moore's $25,000 bond include GPS tether monitoring, no contact with the woman, and orders to not go to the woman's residence. There is a probable cause conference set for Jan. 22.

Ok...football = Miami Dolphins because my grandpa moved to Ft Myers from New York in the 70s and switched allegiances from Jets to Dolphins (but continued to be a Giants fan).
So i joined him.

Baseball i no longer watch but was a Braves fan for years.

Hockey if I did root it'd be Lightning.

love it -- this stuff is endlessly interesting to me, particularly now that i live in brooklyn. like how did the (sadly now closed) esposito's pork store guys become hardcore yankees/jets fans?
fwiw i'm from pittsburgh and went to duke. both my parents went to penn state, so i mostly supported them up until the sandusky situation. (my dad actually rooted for pitt all along because he thought joepa was a phony; he was right). also my next-door neighbor mike lenosky lost his starting linebacker job at pitt to hugh green.
as a kid, big east basketball was huge to me. three teams in the 1985 final four, and also i'd just seen the villanova squad in the pittsburgh airport after getting smoked by pitt in late february.
later, acc basketball was huge to me. i was in indianapolis for duke's first ncaa title in 1991, beating previously undefeated UNLV in the semifinal
now i only vaguely root for these teams. duke's basketball players have been one-and-done for 15 years; it's nice if they do well, i suppose, but i don't care enough to follow the entire roster turning over each year
i'd like to think that this ridiculous turnover might impact fans' support of college sports, but branding is branding, especially if you're an alum

IU putting the total decimation on the Crimson Tide is a sports fan moment I will cherish for a long time. Everything from here out is just Gravy as crushing both Buckeye and Alabama fans souls in the same year feels nice after never being good at any of this BS.
Mendoza's got that huge goofy grin going and got to be like going through a WTF time going from relative obscurity to Heisman winner and all this...
That smile is like inbetween Eddie Haskell and the Joker (f'k that is an old as dirt reference)...
Ah well the Edgar Allen Poe turn around that he will probably get sent to play for the Raiders or Browns next is enough payback on the wheel.

With IU, it would be disappointment if it ends tomorrow, but it's all gravy really after what they have done.
With the Bears, I have watched them for 30 years get the shit beat out of them by Green Bay. When I was in college in the all time win/loss they were like 20+ over and now they are like 20 down to those cheeseheads.
