um wait except chi-det depends on whether or not grossman is behind center. if so i foresee a detroit victory, 28-10. if not, chitown all the way, 27-13

omar little, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I am visiting saginaw michigan this weekend and my presence is enough to ensure a Lions victory, although if there is a defense that can make Grossman look good it's Detroit.

brownie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

grossmans gonna get benched prolly

jhøshea, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

cleveland with a another home division game. After this weekend they will have played every divisonal opponent at home. a long season awaits.

brownie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

bears will have like 5 interceptions that game. D outscores O. Of the undefeateds, I could see Colts going down.

so much junk in week four! I wish I could imagine that the bengals will have a secret D scheme that allows them to only slowly bleed points while carson palmer has one of the most amazing days of his career but oh whatever I don't even have to watch that fiasco on tv. I will probably get to watch ravens at browns though, whatever, fuck all of it. terrible week. denver at indy might be vaguely hilarious.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

I mean there are at least three four more games I could call garbage up there but I'm not because I'm trying to pretend week four matters right now. god

So I watched the Steelers again last week and they looked Super Bowl awesome. They do the same things every week that they've done for 15 years= blitz, block and tackle. They make the other team self destruct and move in for the kill. Big Ben coulda been sacked three times when I was watching but nobody on the 48ers could tackle him. That team is poised. Indy/Pit/NE triumvirate this year.

brownie, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

wow brownie I know I'm the first guy to shit on the NFC around here because it ain't their decade but FFS indy/pit/ne "triumvirate?" at least pretend one of the Non Fawesome Caste will actually be in a playoff game

30 and 18 so far

HOU @ ATL → Houston; I think Atlanta stays winless through October
BAL @ CLE → All respect due, but when did Cleveland suddenly become a juggernaut? Baltimore
OAK @ MIA → Oakland; i think 7-9 is a moral victory and they'll be in contention late.
CHI @ DET → Even with Rex benched, I'm picking Detroit; I dont' theink Chicago is going to fare too well in a shootout.
NYJ @ BUF → Jets and please wake me when it's over
GB @ MIN → Actually a tough pick! Green Bay would be the favorite here, but the Vikings have been losing close ones and I think they're pissed. I'm going minnesota.
STL @ DAL → Dallas is my survival league pick this week
PIT @ ARI → Pittsburgh
TB @ CAR → Carolina, I guess. Could we get rid of these guys and Jacksonville please?
SEA @ SF → Seattle
KC @ SD → San Diego, in a big messy angry win; LDT scores four touchdowns, kicks a field goal and deflowers a cheerleader
DEN @ IND → Indianapolis; I wish they'd play this game in New York though, I'd like to see what Denver's got
PHI @ NYG → Philoldelphia? I think? The giants are a bad team masquerading as a mediocre team and they keep having these ridiculous flashes of overwhelming competency. I halfway wish they'd just suck outright and quit giving me hope.
NE @ CIN → Gawd, I really WANT to pick Cincinnati, but it sounds like Rudi's gimpy. New England, unfortunately.

i used to hate on favre so much but it would kinda be awesome if GB went to the playoffs with him as the grizzled underdog, i think they will be my bandwagon team of choice a la last year's titans (who were only one game away from the playoffs!!!)

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

i hope that Norv doesn't become a scapegoat for the chargers season - he's not a very good head coach, but AJ Smith is the one on the verge of ruining this team, not norv.

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

well yeah the maraz are clearly responsible for keeping coughlin an extra year but that doesn't mean don't fire tom coughlin.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

i don't understand that statement.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

haha okay well, yeah, touche. tho i still think the giants were kinda smart making that move (or not making that move, rather) if for no other reason than they should have their pick of marty & cowher next year.

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

tho i still think the giants were kinda smart making that move (or not making that move, rather)

ok, i do understand that statement but i totally disagree. there's nothing more dispiriting that watching a team that's quit on it's coach. and the g-men pretty much cut the mooring lines to coughlin's ship last year i thought.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

What should AJ Smith have done differently? Let's say that Marty was still there, without Bum Phillips, without Cam Cameron, without like five other key guys from the staff who left BEFORE Schottenheimer was fired. Do you think they'd be winning these games (against the beat team in football in New England, a come-from-behind loss on the road against 3-0 Green Bay) because of Marty's emotional leadership? Marty didn't make those game plans last year, and those guys were gone either way.

So instead of Norv, let's say you have a rookie offensive coordinator in Shelmon, Kurt Schottenheimer as defensive coordinator (even though both AJ Smith AND Dean Spanos hated that idea), an ongoing feud between the GM and Coach ... do you really think that would have been better?

I'm happy Norv is there because at least he has a pedigree as an offensive coordinator, unlike Shelmon. As much as I don't like Cottrell, I'll take him over Kurt Schottenheimer, and when you throw in Ron Rivera I like it even more.

The thing that troubles me more than anything is the fact that the offensive line can't seem to open up any holes for LT. It's not like LT is playing badly, he's just running into brick walls play after play.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

Whoops I mean Wade Phillips duh.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think they've quit on him! i thought that's why there didnt seem to be much bitterness after this last playoff loss, like everyone was at peace knowing they tried their best. or some bullshit. i just dont buy into the LOLGHLIN LOST HIS TEAM meme anymore.

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

Let's say that Marty was still there, without Bum Phillips, without Cam Cameron, without like five other key guys from the staff who left BEFORE Schottenheimer was fired. Do you think they'd be winning these games (against the beat team in football in New England, a come-from-behind loss on the road against 3-0 Green Bay) because of Marty's emotional leadership?

actually, yes! i know it's kinda cliched and it's one of those impossible-to-qualify observations, but one of the most underrated things marty brings to the table as a head coach is the way his teams take on his personality, for better or worse. SD looks like a team without personality right now, cf. LdT talking about being "lost" and the defense playing with none of last year's tenacity.

also, re: coaching - gameplanning is a very very small part of what a head coache's job is. if that's all you needed then jon gruden would be some kind of supercoach godhead.

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:14 (eighteen years ago)

also i think it's important to note that this wasn't just some "oh well they can't get along, time for sophie's choice" situation, it's an established fact that marty approached AJ on multiple occasions to try and smooth things out and smith would have none of it. aj is good at evaluating talent, good at overseeing a scouting dept, but overall he's done more harm to the team than good with his hardheadedness and ego.

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

it is weird how the o-line has been so "ehh" tho.

cankles, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

it almost seems like they were just like "oh we're the chargers, it'll come to us" and it hasn't yet and now they're really panicking when maybe they should have been in "panic mode" maybe a game and a half ago.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 07:40 (eighteen years ago)

What should AJ Smith have done differently?

obv fired martyball at the end of the season and hired a real coach while one was still available.

jhøshea, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

HOU @ ATL → i do not like your Atlanta Falcons one jot, sir, not one jot.
BAL @ CLE → Ravens by 3pts.
OAK @ MIA → Miami, i guess.
CHI @ DET → seems like lunacy, but i have to go Lions. even if Chicago do turn it around thsi season, it won't happen overnight.
NYJ @ BUF → Jets have just enough
GB @ MIN → i still keep waiting for the GB wheels to fall off. not this time, though.
STL @ DAL → it looks bleak for the Rams. coaches have a lot of work on their hands to change the way the team plays mid-season and get some points. Cowboys.
PIT @ ARI → Steelers roll on.
TB @ CAR → shoot out! Panthers, probably.
SEA @ SF → Seattle. every time the niners lose, the 1st round pick they traded to NE gets higher...
KC @ SD → it would be pretty funny if the Chiefs won this, but they won't...will they?
DEN @ IND → i think the Colts will put the Broncos away more tidily than their last couple of opponents.
PHI @ NYG → tough call. which Eagles offense will show up, which Giants D? i think the Giants might do it.
NE @ CIN → seems unwise to go against the Patriots.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

actually, with griese starting i think the detroit game is now going to be a lot closer. although the d is still fucked (tommie harris is out a month, still no word on briggs, vasher, or archuleta) i think they'll step up with a new qb on offense.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

boy, they just looked all around awful against dallas, though.

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

the Chicago QB swap has the makings of one of those situations where the right result is had for the wrong reasons. i could totally see someone having a breakout season - maybe Benson figures out how to find his way to the secondary, or Greg Olsen turns out to be Li'l Antonio Gates - and all of the credit will be given to the brillantly courageous QB switch. not that i don't think Grossman on current form would be an excellent addition to the AFL, but this change feels like it's gonna play out all screwy somehow.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

i can't believe we're talking about this in two threads and neither is the "bench rex grossman" one.

kurt warner was the real deal - just for 3 seasons

jhøshea, Thursday, 27 September 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

Wade Phillips is the most loveable coach this side of Wayne Fontes.

TO is totally loveable when he's not the devil.

Romo is a happy dumbass, and pretty loveable.

Honestly, I hate the Cowboys, but it's hard to hate THESE cowboys. I've been searching for a Wade/TO pic to rival the Marv/Bruce pic in the ADORABLE thread...

rogermexico., Thursday, 27 September 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

ha...good point on warner. actually, the same could be said for curt warner.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 27 September 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

i'm impressed with the way Romo moved against the Bears. he's a slippery sumbitch, stepped away from an aggressive rush countless times and never once took his eye off the field. maybe all that movement will end up getting him in trouble, but he's got a lot of confidence in himself and it looks like it's probably justified. i think he might indeed be the real deal.

hopefully he'll get injured soon.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 27 September 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

i fear you are correct, roberto. he really does have sort of that loose, gunslinger style of early favre w/o the seeming need to take on the world. i guess you don't feel like you have to force the ball so much, though, when you can throw at to and witten.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 27 September 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

RE:graveyardness on here

I've been in a fetal position since sunday and usually the NFL goes through my browns filter anyway :/ Actually should be very excited about the Indians but dang the OAK loss was rough.

In cleveland every team takes a backseat to the browns no matter what their record, it's weird and I'm a part of it.

brownie, Friday, 28 September 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

thing is a lot of this week's matchups are garbage, it's a bye week, and plus "PATRIOTS WAU" and "BEARS WAHT" are kind of tired topics! plus no dipshit/awesome media stuff out of week 3 either, just that one college coach flippin' out on teevee.

Vikings - Forget all of the slobbering that the masses of talking heads are putting on Favre, always remember the dude's record playing in a dome. I figure Minnesota will play better than last week.

Texans - I could see Atlanta pulling an upset, but Houston has been much improved. The only thing that scares me is that the Texans are starting to get a bunch of key players hurt.

Jets - I'm glad this game is not on TV around here.

Ravens - You know what you are getting with B-more, who knows about the Browns.

Dallas - Sick to say, but the Cowboys are looking pretty tough.

Bears - I don't feel as solid about this one, Detroit has stolen a game or two from Chicago at home in the past five years or so.

Miami - The Dolphins D has been pretty meh, but they are at home.

49ers - SF is at home and Seattle can be a bit back and forth, besides the Niners beat them twice last year.

Tampa - Carolina is going to be starting the sack machine David Carr, so I'm going Tampa. I got burned a bunch picking the Panthers the two years after the Superbowl, so screw em.

Steelers - Nuff said.
Chargers - Could be close being in KC, they are always tough there.
Colts - Peyton Manning has abused the Broncos in the past few years when in Indy.

Philly - One of these teams last game might be a fluke, but more likely the Giants.

NE - I hate those guys.

earlnash, Saturday, 29 September 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

Kurt Warner was the shiznit till his hand got screwed up, that guy could really throw a deep pass. I still would like to know what would have happened if Trent Green had not gotten hurt.

HOU @ ATL → David Carr LOLOLOLOL!!! Houston
BAL @ CLE → Baltimore wins uglier than almost anyone in the NFL. Baltimore
OAK @ MIA → Ronnie Brown looked like he had a breakout game last week, but not this week. Crazy, but I'm picking Oakland.
CHI @ DET → You know you’re screwed when Brain Griese is your savior, besides the defense looks like an emergency ward. Detroit
NYJ @ BUF → A lot of ass games this week. This is one of them. Jets
GB @ MIN → If Packers win, would it be too soon to say they've clinched the dreadful NFC North. Pack
STL @ DAL → The Rams are going right into the pooper. Dallas
PIT @ ARI → The local media is playing up the Wishenhunt returns angle, but the most important fact is Hines Ward is out. The two-headed Warner/Leinhart monster might be interesting for a few series. Steelers win anyway.
TB @ CAR → Which is a worse division? NFC North or NFC South. Tampa
SEA @ SF → Hawks
KC @ SD → Two coaching genius at work. Bolts
DEN @ IND → Colts
PHI @ NYG → Not sold on the Giants at all. Philly
NE @ CIN → With Cincy's defense the Pats could break sixty. Pats

Gilbert Arenas OTM

rogermexico., Saturday, 29 September 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

In cleveland every team takes a backseat to the browns no matter what their record, it's weird and I'm a part of it.

This is sadly OTM. The Indians look like the team to beat this year, and nobody in northern Ohio gives a shit!

Except of course me.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 29 September 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

browns madd? :O

bnw, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

LOLtimore

rogermexico., Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

i'm watching the browns game because that bears game would probably make me hate football. plus i have d. anderson starting at qb for me.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan just hurt his back again. ruhroh

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Marshawn Lynch TD run the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

rogermexico., Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

lamont jordan? i'm going against him today!

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, he was helped (VERY SLOWLY) off the field right at the end of the first half.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

that should help, i'm going against him, addai, marvin harrison, and brady.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

steve mcnair is looking good right now for an 80 year old.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

bnw, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

bears special teams continuing the trend of outscoring their offense.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Buffalo posing unique challenges for J-E-T-S LOL LOL LOL

Let there be QB conroversy!

rogermexico., Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

i picked the bills this week because if they don't win this week they may not win a game all season and that probably won't happen. but i don't see them winning more than 3 games this year. sorry horseshoe, etc.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

HEY GUYS WHY DOES ANYOOOOOONE STILL KICK TO DEVIN HESTER?

Jordan Sargent, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

seriously, kick it out of bounds and give it to them at the 40.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

or just pooch it and make some goon fair catch it at the 30. i don't get it.

Jordan Sargent, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

wao bares.

finding new and interesting ways to lose games.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

Browns win again and all of sudden Baltimore looks old.

leavethecapital, Sunday, 30 September 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

broncos look like they would be a decent team if they had a quarterback. cutler looks grossman-esque on some of his throws.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

It really is delightful watching manning call goal-line plays

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Sunday, 30 September 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

holy cats san diego is worse than i thought...

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

It is Bizzarro Week #4.

Maltimore played like crap, those turnovers killed them. The Ravens cannot get behind three scores and win.

What the heck happened in the 4th quarter of that Bears/Lions game?

The Colts offense was about perfect. That second back Kenton Keith looks pretty good. Indy does have a few players getting knicked up.

earlnash, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

sorry pittsburgers.

chicago kevin, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

There's always a couple weeks every year that completely obliterate my pick'em average. I think I only got 5 or 6 of all the afternoon games correct.

(I did pick KC to win, tho!)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I need to spend more weeks bitching about the quality of the matchups etc. clearly it makes for better games all around.

El Tomboto, Monday, 1 October 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I give up, Norv Turner sucks, fire AJ Smith, put me out of my misery.

Go Cal!

polyphonic, Monday, 1 October 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

o noes! Westbrook out. :(

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 October 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

Pittsburgh looked like they were mailing it in today.

leavethecapital, Monday, 1 October 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

Dear Iggles,

I hate to make this request, but could you please come back out in the second half in your ugly yellow/blue throwbacks? They make you play like a real grown-up football team.

Thanks,
JF

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 October 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

KC didn't look great today, but San Diego is so weak this year. It's hard for me not to smile at this, even though LT, Merriman, and Phillips are cool players---because it's nuts to fire your coach after 14-2.

Euler, Monday, 1 October 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Alex Spanos should be forced to either fire AJ Smith or sell the team, because they've proven complete incompetence.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

what giants defense is this?

El Tomboto, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

g-men look like an actual football team!
thank god for no westbrook.

johnny crunch, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

apparently when the Bills actually win people at Delilah's buy rounds of shots for everyone at the bar. so drunk you guys.

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

osi umenyiora is having a lot of fun out there.

El Tomboto, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

apparently when the Bills actually win people at Delilah's buy rounds of shots for everyone at the bar. so drunk you guys.

and they're still in business? they celebrated their 5,000th night of being open on thursday.

chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

oh, I think it was customers buying the shots, not the bar. still awesome.

horseshoe, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

re: ravens

i was at a wedding north of b'more saturday night, and stopped in b'more for breakfast on the way back. outside the palce i was going to eat there was this dude smoking a cig wearing a tee that said "baltimore: the city that reeds"

(there was a civic improvement campaign a few years back in which baltimore claimed to be "the city that reads." of course, this was never validated)

j.q higgins, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

lol i was in baltimore once when that slogan was plastered everywhere - i believe it was inspired by the fact that bmore has the lowest literacy rate of any american big city.

also i made a joke on here once abt having a tshirt w/the slogan and some googler webmailed me asking where he could get one.

jhøshea, Monday, 1 October 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

the bills don't win that often.

hstencil, Monday, 1 October 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

i was right abt the game, anyway! it's clear that philly's not a very good team without westbrook. or their two best defenders.

cankles, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

My mind is still reeling the next day, totally boggled about where the hell this NYG defense came from. WTF

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

well, spags was an eagles coach for a long time, so he clearly had a pretty good idea about how to attack the o-line's weaknesses.

cankles, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not even gona talk about the bears anymore. embarrassing!! ;_;

omar little, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

not as embarrassing as the chargers, though i suppose since the chargers beat the bears that point could be argued.

omar little, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

wow i didn't know the fargas --> huggybear connection.

bnw, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

shit I'm 40 - 22.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

37-25 here.

I went 10-6 the first three weeks!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

Weeks like this remind me why I don't gamble on football.

earlnash, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

6-8? shit. i'm getting worse week-by-week. that was a pretty f'ed up weekend, tho (otm the gambling comment) the only picks i can take any satisfaction from are the Giants and "it would be pretty funny if the Chiefs won this".

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

the comments on ESPN stories are a goldmine. often significantly more interesting than the articles themselves.

frightfreeny (10/2/2007 at 1:46 AM)
I had to turn that game off tonight...the lovefest Tony Kornheiser was having with Tom Brady almost made me puke...do these guys realize the Pats have beaten 4 NFL bottom feeder teams with a combined record of 4 wins and 12 losses, they are mediocre at best...incredible bias...go colts!!!!!

awesome lack of irony and self-awareness right at the end there.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

shit I'm 40 - 22.

me too, yay.
