chicago kevin, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

yeah greg easterbrook is kind of a crazy, huh?

horseshoe, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

i seriously can not wait to for tmqb this week. i can picture easterbrook furiously pounding away at his keyboard worked up in such a lather that spittle is flying from his mouth.

xpost- he's got a hard on to see belichick lose.

If there's one team that I can't stand more, it's that smug 1972 Miami team. Bring it on, Brady.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

everyone picking the Browns this week but I'm worried. Their defense is scary bad, especially against the run. Ugh. Thankfully clevo can pass block again for the first time in 20 years. Last weeks amazing Browns stat= 14 penalties for like 120 yards and they constantly dug themselves out of it. I haven't seen them do that since Kosar.

there's another 4pm game up against them but I can't seem to remember who it is. oh yeah, Texans/Raiders

brownie, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Their defense is scary bad, especially against the run. Ugh.

That's okay. Alexander's been phoning it in this year.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

Buccaneers over Cards
Titans over Panthers
Bills over Bengals
Lions over Broncos
Packers over Chiefs
Jags over Saints

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

i've seen seattle twice this year and the browns twice, browns look at least as good to me. plus they're at home. seattle is really very mediocre.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

browns are probably my second favorite team this year because i love romeo and willie mcginnest is one of my all time favorite players. he's up there with ben coates and lawyer milloy.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

easterbrook heaps praise on indy for pulling manning in the fourth, waggles his finger at the pats for not doing the same. conveniently not mentioning that the patriots not only went to their second string qb but after the redskins couldn't stop him from scoring, went to their 3rd string quarterback.

also, "Another scouts' point: Belichick game plans, going back to the Giants' Super Bowl wins when he was defensive coordinator, often involve jamming receivers at the line and hitting them on crossing routes, designed to disrupt the timing of passing offenses. Will he try this against the Colts'? And why does no one throw this tactic back at Belichick by jamming his receivers?"

uhm, just a guess here but maybe it has something to do with moss and stallworth being bigger/stronger/faster than most dbs? jamming at the line doesn't work if the defensive back is the one who winds up on his ass. and if you try to jam a smaller receiver like welker he's agile and explosive enough to get around it. this is something that any high school player would know, this guy should be ashamed at cashing his paycheck as espn should be at cutting him one.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm I've had some wine and now I'm thinking. if DA continues to have a good year at QB and with BQ in the wings and with the Browns not having a first round pick maybe the time's right for a trade ala Brees/Rivers in SD.

Anderson to the Jets for Pennington and their high 2nd round pick? Browns need a D-line.

Do nothing and get a free agent with the money not spent on a 1st rounder?

Anderson is a restricted free agent at the end of the year.

Suddenly football is fun again y because brwns look interestng

Suddenly football is fun again y because brwns look interestng

I agree. Especially since I picked up Braylon Edwards in like the 10th round and traded Brandon Marshall for Kellan Winslow.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

braylon edwards was a free agent savior for me. 9 tds now?

omar little, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

derek anderson was a week 3 pick up saving me from a season of jason campbell as my qb. i wouldn't be in 2nd place without him. and if campbell could have given me 2 points instead of one on anderson's bye week a couple weeks back i'd be tied for first instead of in second.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Tampa - Other than when the Colts beat em down, the Bucs are playing every game tight and Arizona is still using a QB off the street.
Denver - I keep picking against the Lions and maybe next week I will learn.
Tennesee - These teams are about the same, so it could go either way.
Green Bay - KC is at home, but I think the Packers will win another fugly game.
SD - Minnesota is an example of a good club going nowhere because their QBs are terrible.
J-ville - I want to pick NO, but even though they are playing better, I just cannot pick the Saints.
Redskins - I have to think they will bounce back.
Bills - I'm still pissed at Cincy. I think they should score a bunch against Buffalo, but I am going to have to see it to believe it.
Browns - I'll give Cleveland the benefit of the doubt as I just don't like the Seahawks.
Indy - I hope they destroy NE.
Oakland - The Texans have about half their team hurt and their defense has been giving up a bunch of points.
Philly - Dallas has been talking the talk, but even in the good ole' days going into Philly was never fun.
Steelers - There is something a bit funky about Pittsburgh, maybe it is just making untimely turnovers but they seem to keep teams in games. I could see the Ravens winning this one, but I have to think the Steelers are straight up better, so I give them the nod.

earlnash, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

Indy - I hope they destroy NE.

i think indy can win this game but only one team can destroy the other and the colts aren't it.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

no indy/colts game on local TV this weekend. and OSU is on the BIGTEN network so no one will see that either. ;_:

brownie, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

bears are on a bye so i'll get the pats i'm sure and i think bc/fsu maybe be on abc? i know it got moved to 8 pm so if it's on espn i'll hit it up at a bar.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

what the fuck, i get cleveland and pittsburgh??!?!???

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

seriously, what the fuck, one game on cbs and one game (gb/kc) on fox at the same time????? WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK???? it would almost make sense if each network got one game, one early one late, in the chicago market but both games on at the same time? no afternoon football????

i gotta go to a fucking bar for the pats game? FUCK ME.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

dude you have to get an afternoon game, it's in the constitution and shit

brownie, Thursday, 1 November 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

that's what i was thinking. but not according to cbs2chicago.com or myfoxchicago.com, unless they're fucking liars. which would not surprise me.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

whooooo!!!! denver/detroit followed by GOOD VS EVIL!!!!

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

sunday the 11th the chicago market get's the cleveland/pittsburgh game.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

If you remember from earlier this year, I also hoped that Brian Urlacher would plant T.O.'s decapitated head on Lake Shore drive. I hope that this hope turns out better. I'll definitely take a Colts win, just about any win over the Pats.

It is kind of funny with all of the hype that surrounded Brady Quinn in training camp that the only way he is going to see real time on the field this year is if Derek Anderson gets hurt.

Dr. Z also had a good quote this week on Derek Anderson:

"I think the great success of the Derek Anderson to Braylon Edwards passing combination might be a height-related thing. I haven't worked out all the details yet, but when you've got a 6-6 guy throwing to a 6-3, you're raising the game to new heights, and some poor little 5-10 cornerback might only be conscious of a whooshing kind of noise in the air above him. As you can tell, the details of this theory still have to be refined."

earlnash, Thursday, 1 November 2007 01:47 (eighteen years ago)

Where's that website that has the big map of the U.S. and you can see which markets are getting which games?

wtf, does humboldt county have a team now?

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

If you remember from earlier this year, I also hoped that Brian Urlacher would plant T.O.'s decapitated head on Lake Shore drive.

i don't remember.

urlacher is getting cranky with the local press to the point where he's not answering questions from reporters. the press is fucking FURIOUS that he's only answering questions from fans via his blog and that he self-reported his arthritic back condition. the papers had nothing about it but tv and web were all over the story. it seemed to me that the beat reporters were actually taking this very personally.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

wtf, does humboldt county have a team now?

And you should see their logo!

Also, why is lolhio being punished?

rogermexico., Thursday, 1 November 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

they relinquished rights to the colts/pats game for access to the big 10 network.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 November 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

to rogermexico: It's against the RULES for a home team to show another game in their time slot on the opposite channel. Not sure what those blue blobs are supposed to represent.

also, in ohio you don't access big ten network, big ten network accesses you

brownie, Thursday, 1 November 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

oh blue blobs = raiders/texans

brownie, Thursday, 1 November 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

t's against the RULES for a home team to show another game in their time slot on the opposite channel.

the team has nothing to do with it unless they own the station. which would probably also be against the rules.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 1 November 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

er let me rephrase that. local tv can't show both games when the Browns are at home.

brownie, Thursday, 1 November 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

also, in ohio you don't access big ten network, big ten network accesses you.

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

jesus christ Bengals return kickoff for a td. :(

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Bills fans probably need to put down the razor...criminy, first and goal at the 1 and settle for a field goal then giving up a return for a TD on the ensuing kick off. This kind of stuff has been happening to Cinci all year. It has been a pretty even game so far.

earlnash, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

first game all season where the Bills offense has seemed at all up to snuff. except at the goal line, I guess. ;_;

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

jets/skins = surprisingly exciting, kick return td, onsides kick

vikes/bolts = lot of punting, still reasonably watchable

johnny crunch, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

seems like the saints/jaguars game is good, too, huh? kind of wish I could be watching that one.

Of course then the Bengals come out and squib kick the Bills to midfield and then play a soft enough D to give the Bills a shot at the endzone. It figures, one step up and one step back.

earlnash, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

ugh I hate dick jauron sending the field goal unit on rather than trying for the td.

the saints are the most likable team in sports.

adam, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

a couple of bad calls by the officials and a couple of good D plays have destroyed Philip Rivers' confidence. 10 consecutive incompletions. unless his season picks up he's going to start finding himself under even more scrutiny and pressure, and he looks like that'll just break him. it's the beginning of the end - you heard it here first.

colston is a beast in madden 08.

adam, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

it was a huge gamble for the Vikes just getting in FG range, and that's their reward. on the one hand, you have to feel sorry for them, but on the other hand, tee hee.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

SD has got some f'in weapons man. O is loaded anyway (cept maybe WR) why not use cromartie, turner, sproles, etc. way more in the o-fense??

johnny crunch, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Deuce is done, yeah.

Brees = 300+ yards in 1st half.

"Reggie Bush has been begging all season for some punt return opportunities" -- first chance he gets, it bounces off his face.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Drew Brees is cuet.

Cromartie is a fictional character portrayed by Owain Yeoman and Garret Dillahunt in the upcoming television series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. He is a Terminator sent back from the future to kill John Connor.

johnny crunch, Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

is anyone else watching the det-den game? the really effeminate ref is doing the game and whenever he calls the penalty i feel like i'm watching some really kinky role-playing porn movie i should not be watching. "holding... number seeeventy-ooone... ten yard... penalty... repeat first down" etc.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 November 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh, every other sentence out of Dick Enberg's mouth is just inaccurate and has to be corrected a few seconds later, or left to hang there in the air like an egg-fart. He's losing it faster than Pat Summerall did.

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

where u been dawg?

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

this is the first time i've watched the Vikings this season and although Peterson is clearly very good, the run blocking by their O-Line was incredible. i didn't know they were anything like that good.

i also didn't know that Addai was quite that good, especially given how miserly the Pats usually are against the run. Peterson has this knack of avoiding the first tackler, but Addai's approach is to plough into a mess of players and come out the other side. i keep hearing comparisons of Addai and Maroney but sadly I don't think Maroney, while good, looks anything like as good.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 November 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

by that i mean first eleven tacklers bbcode makes me catatonic.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

i also didn't know that Addai was quite that good, especially given how miserly the Pats usually are against the run.

pats aren't that great against the run. they employ a bend but don't break defense where they'll give up yardage and tighten up in the red zone to try to limit scoring to fg's instead of td's. pats don't like giving up touchdowns. the run numbers look good because they've put teams behind the eightball early and opponents have needed to pass to get back in the game.

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

i'm really starting to resent the fact that the colts-pats game is still a bigger story than peterson breaking the record, or even peterson in general. not to mention the fact that he basically single-handedly crushed the chargers aka #3 (albeit a distant one) in the big afc 3.

marion barber is a beast. that guy runs with abandon.

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

Randy Moss is just about impossible to cover. That guy is a freak. If I was a scout I might try to find some 6-5 or 6-6 basketball players that have some speed, but not enough game to make it in the pros for hoop and try and develop some kind of super cornerback to try and cover a guy like that.

The Colts made some oddball play calls in the second half. I know if Manning hits on one of those deep balls to Wayne it changes the game, but the fact that three times with short yardage he went deep instead of just getting a first down really hurt them, especially on the 3rd and 2. Peyton seemed to really want to bust out for a big pass and it didn't happen and it really kept their defense on the field much more than needed. Indy's D seemed to run out of gas in the fourth quarter.

earlnash, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, I guess I understand where you're coming from, but isn't the outcome of a huge game between two undefeated teams more important than the setting of an individual record, which is basically a bit of trivia? if it had been pats vs Kansas or something that made the headline, that would be another thing.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

you just described randy moss. no one would waste a fast, high-jumping 6-6 dude @ the cb position.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

i think there is some gray area, robert. i think the fact that peterson is a rookie makes a huge difference. basically it doesn't have as much to do w/ the record as how it was achieved and against the team that it was acheived against. the fact that we may honestly be watching the manifestation of the best running back in the history of the game (8 games i know, but he's on another planet right now) seems more important than the outcome of a game between two great teams, an outcome that except for bragging rights doesn't really mean all that much (maybe for home field or something, but that's not a given, both team are going to win their division, make the playoffs, etc.)

i don't want to say that this reeks of the press reporting on (or perpetuating the) hype that only they themselves have created, because i guess i'm still naive to think that the press reports the most important stories first, but what peterson did today was more incredible than anything that happened within the colts-pats game or the game itself.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

maybe because i was watching the vikings game, but it was hard not to watch these 64 and 46 yard touchdowns and not feel like you were literally watching history in the process. again, gray area, maybe i'm being attracted by flair and elegance (and my own romanticism) but i was never emotionally pulled by the pats-colts game as i was by peterson today.

even tho i have no direct relation to peterson or the vikings, i fear that i may be too emotionally involved in the proceedings to argue rationally.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

tho i still contend that if i was the editor of espn.com peterson gets the big picture and colts-pats gets "relegated" to the bright, red breaking news box, but i guess i understand the argument otherwise.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

oh, ya think?

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

what peterson did will have virtually no effect on the postseason.
the pats-colts game has tremendous postseason implications.
the narrative of the regular season is that it is a prelude to the even greater excitement of the postseason leading up to the biggest advertising venue in the history of television. sorry you don't like football.

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

If I was a scout I might try to find some 6-5 or 6-6 basketball players that have some speed,

that was lenny walls, a cb the broncos had out of bc. lenny's twin brother kenny was a small forward on bc's basketball team. they may have only been 6-4 though. still, that's fucking huge for a cb.

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Tom is otm. Peterson is fantastic, but the Vikings are 3-5.

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

I think Donovan McNabb is a very attractive man, but I get the impression this is not a widely-held opinion?

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

i mean a. the vikings can still make the playoffs, the man single handedly trampled a playoff bound team and b. the playoff implications of an undefeated team beating an undefeated team are that if they are to meet in their league's championship game the winner of the previous game would have home field, provided they finish w/ the better record.

none of this is at all a given. that peterson broke the rushing record, and that he did it with such abandon and grace— still one of the more harrowed records in the game— is cemented, as his is status as one of the top 2 running backs in the whole sport.

there is something to this that makes it bigger to me than dillon or lewis breaking it. for those guys it was obviously the apex of their career, the point at which it all went right. i think it matters that this seems like a stepping stone to greener pastures. it does sadden me that it's being overshadowed by some 24-20 game, and i don't make any apologies for that.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

fine, but do you think McNabb is cuet or what?

Rock Hardy, Monday, 5 November 2007 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

BROWNS WIN

Since I'm the only one who actually saw the game I will recap. Browns go down 21-6 and look like bums then come storming back. They get a 30-27 lead after a clutch 2-point conversion (awesome Phil Dawson missed an extra point earlier). Seattle with a minute and half left get down and kick a field goal to tie it up.

Overtime: Browns lose the coin toss. After the kickoff Seattle drives with the short passing game like they did the entire game. Browns are going to lose.

Well Seattle decides to run the ball on 4th and inches from the Clevo 40 and is stopped.

Our man Winslow catches some balls (Edwards having a horrible day) and the Browns are on the 8. Awesome Dawson kicks for the win.

Holgremnmnmnmnmn. At no time did the Browns stop the west coast dink and dunk. Until they went with the run game.

Bills score 33! Browns score 33!

And the Broncos lose big.

Now if only one of the two teams tomorrow lose I will be happy.

Heeeey! I resent that!

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

whoa ok that actually was the most imoprtant game ever - srsly this is weird but i was more freaked out by that game than i think by any sporting event ever. i couldnt sit down, i was just pacing and saying fuck fuck fuck and inhaling beers the whole time.

i did manage to observe a few things: first of all weirdness, more draw plays than any game ever im sure. the play calling was on some other chess grand master level strategic shit. what im trying to say is i have no idea what was going on there. obv belichick pwnd the bigot dungy - making the big halftime adjustments and holding the colts to 90 yards for the rest of the game. in the presser he criticized his own play calling saying something like well i guess my strategy wasnt so good in the first half then broke out in the smarmiest smirk then tried to stop and couldnt really regain his dour form for a while. struggling against joy belichick lol.

the officiating: its really good the pats won here cause this bullshit would be the whole story had they lost. one of the endzone pass interference calls was just completely phantom, and then dude hugging moss's arm on the bomb isnt called, then the imaginary endzone o pass interference on moss that prob shouldve been on the d that turned a td into a field goal. my dad thinks it was phil simms who bought off the refs, just cause he's a dick.

the colts are really good. football outsiders says these are the two best teams of the last 8 years (as far back as their stats go). the game while not pretty was clearly played on a level no one else in the league can touch. i wouldnt be surprised if the colts dont lose another game until they meet the pats in foxboro. but the pats just beat indy in indy on a day when indy got every call. this shit is not a discussion anymore.

jhøshea, Monday, 5 November 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

i think i need to watch it again in a less shit faced emotional state. so far no torrent. holla if you know where one is thx.

jhøshea, Monday, 5 November 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

NFL Network's replaying it Wed. night, if you get that channel.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 5 November 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

charlie casserly mentioned in the studio show prior to the early game that the referee team was last in the league in calling defensive pass interference (4 through 8 games) and first in the league in calling it on offense so moss was probably going to have a tough game. not too tough though.

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

a colts drive was also completely stalled by a series of o-line penalties in I think the 3rd quarter so they didn't get "every call." second team left tackle got a false start to set it off and they might has well have just punted right then.

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

come on tom, a false start isn't exactly the same as pass interference. it's a lot more noticeable when only one guy on the offense starts moving and everyone else is still set.

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

not to harp on this buuuuuuuut: ne:10-146 / indy:4-25

jhøshea, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

and if there was a series of penalties that was the only time they were getting flagged because the colts had 4/25 yards compared to the pats 10/146.

but then again the pats are cheaters amirite?

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just saying it wasn't like the refs were throwing the fucking game.
pats also had the crowd noise to deal with which probably caused half of those flags

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

the colts did have a bunch of injuries tho - ill give them that

NFL Network's replaying it Wed. night, if you get that channel.

Peyton Manning's replaying it IN HIS HEAD every night until playoffs.

I don't like the Patriots so much, but Peyton seems like one of those guys who'd act all chummy with you and then give you some annoying nickname since he's bigger.

And oh, let's sing the dirges for Marvin Harrison's absence.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

man, i can't help but think how much different last years afc championship game could have been if the pats had any one of moss, stallworth, or welker. also, from hearing postgame comments, i think that loss is where this years tendency to run up the score was born. they kept talking about 60 minutes of effort, trying as hard on the last series of the game as the first and how last year they didn't do that and it cost them.

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

yes, i agree, i recall having this argument a couple days ago w/some coworkers - part of belichick's strategy has to be that they go out there every week and play hard for 60 minutes, no matter what - having them get used to slacking off vs other teams half the season isn't consistent.

daria-g, Monday, 5 November 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

cankles, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

uh a. the vikings aren't mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, they still play both the lions and the packers again once (at least). a 9-7 team could make it from the nfc, unlikely but still.

and i was saying they really trounced the chargers— a for sure playoff team and one that had looked like it was back as the #3 in the afc, albeit a distant one to the pats/colts as i mentioned.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

anyway, a few thots;

indy outplayed ne for most of the game. i was nervous as hell for all 60 minutes of gametime; tbh i didnt even believe the pats were gonna win until they started kneeling down at the end. still, nothing about the game really surprised me, buuuut i also didn't expect indy to dominate the lines of scrimmage against new england like they did.

and, y'know, that was actually a pretty good game relative to the hype. so that was cool.

man, i can't help but think how much different last years afc championship game could have been if the pats had any one of moss, stallworth, or welker. also, from hearing postgame comments, i think that loss is where this years tendency to run up the score was born. they kept talking about 60 minutes of effort, trying as hard on the last series of the game as the first and how last year they didn't do that and it cost them.

-- chicago kevin, Monday, November 5, 2007 4:46 PM (2 hours ago) Bookmark Link

yeah, i thought the AFCC was clearly the impetus for their crazy offseason - it's all to compete with Indy. after getting their asses kicked by the colts three times in a row BB pretty much decided that they needed an explosive, Indy-style offense to have a shot at beating them.

cankles, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

they aren't mathematically eliminated, yeah, but neither are the rams. get the fuck outta here.

the chargers are at best a DISTANT FOURTH to pittsburgh's distant third, was my point. there's a dropoff from Newenglanapolis to Pitt, but a much bigger one from Pitt to SD. imo.

cankles, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

it was a really good game! so many cookies were stress-consumed by me.

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

wrt #3 afc team, yeah. like bloobhloj said, yesterday's GAME proved how far above all other teams in the league Indy and NE are.

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

pats play pittsburgh later in the season, no?

BREAKING NEWS COLTS CHEATERS: NFL INVESTIGATING PIPED IN DOME NOISE + MONKEYING W/BRADY/BELICHICK COMMUNICATION SYSTEM!!!!!!

jhøshea, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

Brady-to-Moss, Brady-to-Moss, Brady-to-Moss, Brady-to-that-other-guy, do they even need helmet communications?

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

fwiw this is pitt's sched this year:
at Cleveland W 34-7
Buffalo W 26-3
San Francisco W 37-16
at Arizona L 14-21
Seattle W 21-0
at Denver L 28-31
at Cincinnati W 24-13

that's what, one team w/ a winning record? i don't doubt that they are in the top 4 (maybe even number 3) but i'd hesitate to say that they are as far apart from SD as you guys are insinuating. i also don't doubt that the pats are going to trounce pitt like they did SD.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

SD's a fairly solid all-around team right now, but their offense isn't as dominant as it was last year. pitt's offense has been really inconsistent, but their defense is as good as it gets. obviously you'd still favor NE against them but i promise it'll be a more competetive matchup than SD was.

cankles, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

it's just sad how this all makes giants-cowboys seem like such a waste of time. it's even hard to wholeheartedly cheer for the wizard of favre because unless the colts and pats get hell of injured during the rest of the regular season it's like everything is writ.

the nu-packers storyline is still really cool to me! i mean i feel wut ur sayin, but hay anything can happen~

cankles, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

i think pitt has both the wrs and the qb to give the pats some trouble, i think the colts showed yesterday that you can still kinda knick away @ the pats dbs. hines ward + santonio holmes + heath miller> vincent jackson + whoever their second reciever was @ the time + gates.

idk what the strategy to beat the pats is. keep the ball away from them? they really slammed tomlinson, tho i think parker + steelers could really muscle them around. i think it'll end up being something like the dallas game where it's close into the 3rd (probably into the 4th) until the pats pull away, and make the final margin pretty wide w/ this run up the score/ FINISH THE GAME thing w/e you wanna call it.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

would they ever get rid of the conferences and just have the SB between the two best teams? is that crazy talk?

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

er by knick maybe i mean nick i dont even know but i think you get @ what im saying.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

the strategy is to pressure brady and yeah, have a good running game so you can keep their offense off the field. and kidnap Randy Moss.

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

pittsburgh likes to blitz, so they will probably have some success with the former.

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think Pittsburgh is going to win that game, but I bet they keep it fairly close.

horseshoe, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

eh im kinda of the mind that pitt just hasnt really played anyone

jhøshea, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

although im not really sure whos better after ne/indy/dal

jhøshea, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

when you think about the real good teams besides the colts that the pats have beat now— SD, dallas— it's not like those teams have individual parts worse— esp. on offense— than the steelers, meaning tomlinson is better than parker and barber/jones, but parker and barber/jones are pretty equal. romo/roeth/rivers aren't in all actuality that far apart, they are all three capable of putting up great numbers or totally blowing games. the recievers aren't that far apart either, maybe SD loses that one but gates makes up for most of it, and TO is great but not consistently better than hines ward (tho this season i guess he is). the defenses are all v. good, good lines + linebackers w/ solid defensive backs, tho no one that is gonna instill fear in the hearts of moss/stalworthl/welker.

is tomlin that much of a better coach than turner/phillips? it's very possible. are the steelers glued together so to speak better than those other two? again possible. is roethlisberger more, um, "careful" than the other 2 qbs? possibly, though the pats play well against him. do the steelers just seem to always keep it close in games like this? yeah maybe that's it.

basically idk dudes.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

it seems like the keystone here is if you can keep your pass rush going at speed right up until the end of the game. If at any point Brady starts being able to get 2 seconds or more in the pocket, Welker or Moss will be open, and game over. No DB scheme is going to work as well as it needs to on the pats' WRs to allow your pass rushers to get tired. I think this is a big part of the way the Pats keep opening it up in the fourth.

I also think this is why I am still kind of stoked for Week 17.

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

that game in new jersey or massachusetts tom?

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

pitt is dead in the middle of the nfl when it comes to sacks but maybe they are deep enough to stay fresh? do they still run a 3-4? maybe if you keep throwing linebackers at the pats you can throw them off their game a bit. needless to say ike taylor and deshea townsend are gonna get eaten by moss/stall/welker if brady has any sort of time.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

kidnapping randy moss seems like best strat imo.

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 November 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I also think this is why I am still kind of stoked for Week 17.

yeah pats playing for perfect season v sick pass rush could be compelling (unless giants dont have anything to play for at that point)

jhøshea, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

re: pitt

in theory, i think i kind of like them, too, however, looking at who they've beaten is one thing. looking at who they've lost to is quite another! just looking at their points scored/points allowed this am i was impressed until it sank in how much they blew against a fairly lackluster broncs squad.

Pats-Bills to 8:15
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots' road game against the Bills on Nov. 18 is being moved to an 8:15 p.m. kickoff, the NFL announced today.

This is the first game that is eligible to be moved as part of the league's flexible scheduling. The game will be broadcast on NBC.

"The Patriots quest for a perfect season is clearly the biggest story in the NFL," said Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal, Sports & Olympics. "It's also been 13 years since the NFL's premier primetime game visited Buffalo and it will be quite a scene there."

chicago kevin, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

so now i don't have to go to delilah's to watch the game then get pummeled by bills fans after the pats put the hurt on them.

"well, gee, that's so fucking great," a resigned Dick Jauron told the press...

LOL, but don't forget the sneaky Bills are 6-2 through 478 minutes of play...

rogermexico., Monday, 5 November 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

At times Pittsburgh has looked shaky, especially in the offensive line. They're able to get away with it because Roffles has such great pocket awareness. We'll see tonight how the line holds up against the Ravens. I don't think they can beat NE though. They give up to many third down plays on defense.

leavethecapital, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

idk, i still think the colts can beat NE even if it has to be in foxboro. and not just cuz they were banged up a bit but indy's D played v. well i thought -- Brady made some fuckin pinpoint throws and receivers made some really really great plays but the horses were right there for the most part...i mean, you can say what's to keep brady/moss/welker/stallworth from repeating such high level play if there was a rematch but id be encouraged if i were an indy fan.

also, this is definitely the first time ive really looked forward to being able to rewatch & carefully pay attention to a game a few days later on the nfl network

Steelers wearing throwback unis for the 2nd time this year?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I love the throwback unis. It's to bad the Ravens can't wear their throwback jerseys, then they would be the Browns. Blasphemy.

wau nice play robble

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

i think the colts could definitely win a rematch and maybe if reggie wayne didn't have butterfingers they would have won last night. but i think the pats would still be favored and rightly so!

omar little, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

How exactly have the Ravens won ANY games this year?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

21 to 0. I don't think the Raven have enough offense to come back.

leavethecapital, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

28 to 0 probably seals this deal. What else is on?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

d be encouraged if i were an indy fan

yes, i'd be encouraged too if my team just lost at home. playing on the road in new england at the end of january would obviously be a lot more palatable.

i'd be a lot more encouraged as a pats fan knowing that they played their worst game of the season and still beat the 2nd best team in the league on their home turf. or carpet.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

what's kind of fucked up, though, is that 7-1 is the colts WORST start in the past three seasons.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't see half of the colts game but the numbers addai put up and the turnovers brady had made me think it was their worst game.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

I watched the Bills Sunday and their turf looked different from the old school astro turf. It's color was actually close to natural grass. For a team named the Buffalo Bills I think their field should resemble the Great Plains.

brownie, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds like the new turf - maybe that sites out of data

brownie, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

i think AstroTurf refers specifically to the proprietary old-style turf. the new kinds are FieldTurf and RealGrass. most nyc park sports fields have this stuff now - its nice n bouncy!

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

astroturf on the other hand was unbelievably hard. i remember once when i was a kid i went on the boston college field after a game and was kinda disturbed that they actually played football on the stuff.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i remember playing at georgetown and thinking the same thing. on one hand, i'm sure alumni field is a more sophisticated facility, but w/ actual atro turf fields, it's like comparing shit sandwiches.
