man I wonder how the Chargers would be doing with a healthy trio. Rivers is playing well despite the hobble but LT not being in now....granted the Chargers have 3 good running backs but LT is otherworldly!
I like the defense...
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 20 January 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)
and that play is indicative why I never minded trading Chambers.
what a terrible play.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 20 January 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)
I mean he had freaking position on the ball, even if he didn't catch it, do whatever you can to prevent Samuel from catching it.
(but he should have caught it)
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 20 January 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)
rivers kinda getting impatient...
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 20 January 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)
so maybe the way to stop the pats is just to have really great corners
all things considered, how many of us expected a 14-9 game at the half? And one of the TDs came on a short field. Kudos to the Charger defense. Extreme kudos. I like how they're feigning blitzes or occasionally sending the blitz and dropping a d-lineman into coverage.
Part of me wonders if it wouldn't be better to try Volek, who isn't exactly chopped liver, but Rivers was really only responsible for the one interception (first was on Chambers)...
the main problem is he doesn't have the mobility to escape pressure, which thankfully until now he hasn't had to evade much, but gotta think that's gonna change in the second half...
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 20 January 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)
"he" being Rivers

San diego playing a gutsy game, that's for sure....
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 20 January 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)
If San Diego loses, it's the red zone that loses it for em.
Can't argue with the playcall at all, but zero execution....
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 20 January 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)
hard to believe how well Seau is still playing. Burns me up that he 'retired' after his last season with the Dolphins and then un-retired when the Patriots came calling. Not that I don't understand why he did it, but damn...

this really would be a shame if San Diego lost. They've played a really gutsy game.

In all fairness to Tynes that last FG was really fucking amazing and the two he missed were pretty fucking hard (if no one has made a FG over 40 yards in Lambeau history and you miss one that's 43 well it happens and that snap on the last second one was all kind of fucked up.) So good on him for not being the goat and all that.

Brett Favre is decidedly NOT having fun.
― polyphonic, Monday, 21 January 2008 06:07 (seventeen years ago)
Biggest pimps:
QB: Eli. Lots of great plays and not many mistakes. Gutty day by Rivers a close second. RB: Maroney. He and Evans wore the Chargers front seven down. WR: Burress. No contest. Tight Ends: Patriots. Great blocking by this unit, including the receivers. OL: Not a ton of pressure in either game, so good one all around. Nice play by Packers dude on that fumble recovery.
Ends and Tackles: Maybe the Packers? They were doing a great job, but Al Harris just couldn't cover Burress at all. The Giants were good too. Linebackers: Patriots. Seau was great and the others all made key plays. DBs: Chargers. They were outstanding, especially Jammer. Red Zone Defense: Patriots Overall Defense: I'd go with the Giants, just because that was grueling and they really had to struggle for it. And they played great apart from the mistake 90-yarder.
Special Teams Coverage: Patriots. Great play by Kelly Washington, and Sproles was a non-factor. Kicker: It feels weird to give it to Tynes when he was 1/3 on three short kicks (even if the weather made it tough), and Kaeding had a really bad history as a postseason kicker and made up for it here. Punter: Nobody was especially great, and nobody shanked one. The weather kinda nullified these dudes, I think.
Coaching: Definitely not the Packers, but you could make a good case for the other three. The Packers were lucky to be as close as they were.

so ppl who are predicting a super bowl slaughter, did you not watch the last half of the season? particularly the most difficult win the patriots barely pulled off against the giants?
i mean seriously, fuck all y'all! eli manning is! just like is citizen echo drive watch!

did you guys see archie manning being like "well i'm not saying he's PHIL SIMMS but he's not terrible"?? way to be supportive, daddy-o. yr golden boy is sittin' on his couch, archie! grow up!
i think every single person i was watching this game with yesterday almost had aneurisms watching this, i swear to god. the replay situation on fox was amazingly awful. like, o wau plexiglass just had an AMAZING CATCH, let's show a replay...of armani toomer just kind of wandering around being double teamed mid-field far from the play? then that incredible hit on some gb receiver where he flipped upside down in the air! they don't reshow that, just show favre standing there?? and not reshowing the majority of the really, really sketchy penalties--wau good job guys.
does anyone have a screenshot of joe buck making an amazing blow job face for like three minutes while seeing if he can see his own breath while aikman looked incredibly uncomfortable, btw? did anyone see that? did those two know they were like on live television at any point yesterday?

ally's posts remind me of this post by an eagles fan on another board i read:

n e way, chargers fans should be proud of their team. they played with a ton of heart this postseason, the defense yesterday was tremendous. if they had their most important red zone weapons (LdT, Gates) it could've been a very different game~
giants had a fantastic defensive gameplan, i loved how they were attacking GB's screen packages. they were super aggressive attacking the gaps and stopping the packers from running, which forced the game into favre's hands. GB looks dumb for not anticipating any of this or coming up with adjustments.
giants secondary has played uncannily well this postseason, a lot of which you can put on the performance of the front four. if NYG can be effective with their four and five man pressures against NE and their secondary gets healthy fast, they might have a chance.
tom coughlin has proved that he's pretty much a top tier coach in this league imo~
― cankles, Monday, 21 January 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i was sort of surprised green bay never really figured out the screen play was not going to work against the Giants D.
― horseshoe, Monday, 21 January 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)
pats came out expecting to be facing the giants scrubs. once they realized they were in a game they turned it on and put the giants away. except for burress no one on that team scares me.

also can we arrange for a chicago kevin tribute thread where we list all his bitter angry comments in defense of the pats this year? like every time anybody says anything about the pats not being the only team in the NFL he shows up and spits! it's kind of adorable!
― El Tomboto, Monday, 21 January 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

pats came out expecting to be facing the giants scrubs. once they realized they were in a game they turned it on and put the giants away
no, they didn't. i mean you are like even nuttier than bill simmons on this shit, dude. you like have been watching an entirely different season than the rest of us and it's even the more bizarre in that your team is winning! even close games! still victories! wtf do you have to be so defensive about? what the hell is so hard about admitting that, yeah, some teams have shown they can get the better of certain patriots players?
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 21 January 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)
I tried to track down some good schef soundbites but they are all either from crappy radio shows where he phoned in. I wish I could find a good recording of him spelling houshmandzadeh out loud spelling-bee style from Total Access last year but no dice. NFL Network has a death grip on that shit

schef, i'm not being defensive, let me re-state for the 8 millionth time: i don't think the patriots are invincible. they have a chance to lose every game they play (except when they play the dolphins). the giants game was a close game but i think a rematch won't be nearly as close for the reason i stated.
i'm glad the giants won, as i said last week i thought the packers had the best chance of the four teams still alive going into yesterday. i am really looking forward to see what belicheck comes up with with two weeks to prepare for the giants.

Belichik facing a team the second time in a season + the Giants playing them tough the first time + some Giant is going to say something stupid in the next two weeks (prime candidates:Strahan, Burress, Pierce)=lay the points.

my main concern is whether the crowd is going to be loud enough in arizona to keep the g-men on their postseason win bender. apparently screaming antagonistic road mobs are the only fans these guys know how to play for.
― El Tomboto, Monday, 21 January 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)
or maybe they played a weak ass road sched then got inexplicably hot INEXPLICABLY for the playoffs
― jhøshea, Monday, 21 January 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)
i don't know about any of that but i just saw eli's post-game interview last night and am left wondering: is his head disproportionately small in comparison to his body or was he just wearing like 18 t-shirts?

with the exception of the bills, teams that have had a second shot at the pats (jets, fins, chargers) have played significantly better than the first game. part of that can be accounted to weather and the shock of omg new pats offense randy O_O wearing off, but it's still something to keep in mind i think
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)
actually, say what you will about the giants, but won't this be the first super bowl in a while w/ two teams that were both playoff teams the previous season?

that never gets old.
two things easterbrook can't seem to stay away from; hyperbole and anti-semetism. he's going with the former today:
Norv Turner's decision to punt in New England territory in the fourth quarter when trailing by two scores might go down as the single worst coaching decision of all time. Let us count the ways in which the decision was ludicrous.
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

it's a shame there's two weeks to hype this f'ing game because this is actually one game that needs no hype and would be so much better if both teams could just keep on rolling into it.
fuck the nfl sometimes.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)
The hype is already horrible. Mo Lewis was on NYC radio being interviewed about knocking Bledsoe out and Brady taking over. That was old news during the first Pats SB.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)
lost in that game is that while bledsoe was almost bleeding to death HE CAME BACK FOR ONE MORE SERIES. it was only when he started getting light headed that he came out.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
Brady would have overtaken him eventually anyway, maybe not that year. As much as I loathe Belichik, he is a brilliant personnel guy, see Welker, Harrison, Sea3u etc.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)
eh, chad scott, chad brown, andy katzenmoyer etc.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)
wait, katzenmoyer was pete carroll's last year so he was a bobby grier pick.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)
whoa, i'm reliving belicheck's first draft, pretty brutal until pick #199.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)
Come on dude, without his personnel skills, the Pats are nowhere. And don't forget additions by subtraction like Lawyer Milloy
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)
i'm not saying he's not talented, i'm just saying not everything is a homerun. seriously go back and look at that first draft: adrian klemm, jr redmond, greg robinson-randall, dave strachelski, antwan harris, jeff marriott...
only two guys had an lasting impact on the team and that was brady and patrick pass, their 6th and 8th round picks.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)
Nobody hits a home run with every draft pick. The bottom line is that the team was almost entirely built from the draft, and the majority of the players on the team have only ever played for the Patriots as pros.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)
well... all teams not named the Redskins are built through the draft. the pats are just more succesful at it. a lot of their most important players were FA acquisitions anyway
― cankles, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)
btw, this is my favorite "it's all dumb luck" story - during the 2000 draft, down to the last minute, the pats draft room was split 50-50 on whether to take tom brady or... tim rattay.
― cankles, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)
again, i'm not saying he's not talented. i'm stopping short of brilliant though based on his pre-pioli track record.
by the time the game actually rolls around, will i even care about it? if the pats win i'll be happy for a day but by monday afternoon all i'll be thinking about is work. if they lose i'll be pissed for a while but by tuesday afternoon all i'll be thinking about is work.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 24 January 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)
"...pre-pioli track record. "
Uh, can't he improve? He sure improved as a coach.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 24 January 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)
sure he can improve but i'm not ready to say he's brilliant (as you did) unless i know that he is. maybe he is, maybe he's not. but until i know i'll withhold on calling him that.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 24 January 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

Free agents (Giants 36, Patriots 30)The bulk of the players on both teams weren't drafted or acquired in trades. They were free agents, either as veterans or as undrafted rookies.

I'm not sure what your point is. That the Giants are roughly similar in terms of being built "the right way"? I never said otherwise.
― polyphonic, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)
i think the point is you said "The bottom line is that the team was almost entirely built from the draft,..." when 30 of the players on the 52 man roster came via free agency.
― chicago kevin, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)
When I think of "free agency," I'm thinking of pricey veterans. There are certainly a few of those guys on the Pats, but not very many.
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 03:53 (seventeen years ago)
How the hell is the Giants money line only 375??? There hasn't been a Super Bowl this lopsided since Pats/Rams and back then I remember people were getting at least 800-900 for taking the Pats.
I guess since the Pats actually won that game Vegas learned its lesson.

dude, you've got to remember that the lines have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAME!!! they only exist to try to get an equal amount of money bet on either side without the bookmaker getting middled.
