Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

We ran into this on ITR, it is a(n annoying) mystery.

HI DERE, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

We know what you're talking about.

I'd like to see a compilation of Peyton's reactions. What an asshole.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

was archie at the game last night btw? didn't see a shot of him once.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 4 February 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

i bet he made that gesture when eli was slow scarfing down his blueberry pie at denny's when they were kids or something. we need to get this hurry it up thing as a gif stat

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

i like how that brunette chick next to peyton was trying to hug him towards the end of the game and he just ignored her. he looked like sean bean during the fellowship circle.

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

I remember that. I recorded the game (not great quality) but I don't want to watch it again obv

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

send it my way, i will watch it 4000000000000000 times.

i thought peyton reactions were great!

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 February 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

also terrifying when they scored that last touchdown. he reacted like an extra from the 300

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 February 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

like how that brunette chick next to peyton was trying to hug him towards the end of the game

Yes! She was like "high five!" and he only had eyes for Eli

brownie, Monday, 4 February 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

No way schef, forget it, I don't remember when Peyton did that and I'd have to watch at least an hour of footage. :( And now what do I do? They should have an alternate NFL league that plays in the offseason, it is way too long until September.

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

baseball baby.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

I never liked baseball. I am thinking NASCAR.

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

no way dude

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

NASCAR rules! Fast cars + liquor + redneckin'. It used to be cooler when the cars were sponsored exclusively by tobacco and auto parts.

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

I see no difference in the excitement level of NASCAR and if they covered the Boston Marathon live.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

Dude, big giant car wrecks at 200+ mph. You start watching for that, and then maybe you pay attention to strategy, or not, and just keep waiting for another giant wreck.

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

daria you give NASCAR rednecks a bad name. ^_^

Leee, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

I was a huge NASCAR fan when I was in grade school. Maybe I should start an ILNASCAR board and convince everyone else. I did start watching because of the wrecks though.

Today is awful, I keep forgetting about the ball game and then click on a news site and then forget again and then go back to the news.. ugh.

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

That's like waiting two-and-a-half hours in baseball to see a guy get beaned.

xp

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

but in baseball beaning can only happen on a pitch, and they throw like one pitch per five minutes in that shit. stock cars are always going in a circle at 200mph, on the precipice of doom.

El Tomboto, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

and yet they never really crash! NASCAR is too safe imo~

I just can't watch that game again, won't NFL network replay it?

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

"You sort of play the game as you are up there watching, but you are pulling so hard for Eli,'' Peyton said. "I guarantee you I am more involved in the game he is playing than any other NFL game. I was pumped, and I got a lot of messages telling me to calm down because I was excited and pumped after the big plays he was making.''

^^^ what is peyton talking about

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 4 February 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

Russell Phillips (born March 6, 1969-October 6, 1995) was a NASCAR Sportsman Division driver from America. He was killed at Lowe's Motor Speedway in 1995 in one of the most gruesome crashes in the history of NASCAR.

Phillips was in 10th place when he was hit by the car of Steven Howard, who steered high to avoid a two-car spinout. Howard's car forced Phillips' car onto it's right side, then smashed it roof-first into the retaining wall. Until 1996, NASCAR cars were not yet required to be equipped with the "Earnhardt bar", a roof-support bar running down the middle of the windshield, designed to prevent fatal roof collapse in roof-first accidents. [1] Resultantly, the existing roll bars failed to protect the roof; both the roll bars and the roof itself were sheared completely off the car, exposing the interior of the driver compartment and grinding it against the wall and fence. When the vehicle came back down onto the track on its wheels, there was a massive "gaping hole" where the top of the car was supposed to be.

Phillips, whose upper body was ground against the track's steel catch fence and a caution light fixture at high speed, was both partially dismembered and decapitated, in what a photographer on-scene described as "as gruesome a wreck as I can ever recall".[2] In video of the accident, the first rescuer on scene could be seen running to the car, then immediately turning away from the wreck after seeing Phillips' body and realizing the hopelessness of any attempt at resuscitation. The track was littered with car debris, blood, and numerous pieces of Phillips' body, necessitating a complete and lengthy race stoppage (red flag) while track officials wearing surgical gloves placed white sheets over various body parts in the vicinity of the crash. The driver's head (still wearing his helmet) was found at the entrance of the pit road, and one of his hands was found suspended in the retaining fence. [3]

Tom Brady (born August 3, 1977-February 3, 2008) was a NFL Quarterback from America. He was killed at University of Phoenix Stadium in 2007 in one of the most gruesome crashes in the history of the NFL.

Brady was on his own 26 yard line when he was hit by rookie Jay Alford, who all but ignored a block by Pro Bowler Dan Koppen backup center Russ Hochstein. Alford's shoulder forced Brady's body onto its backside, then smashed it head-first into the turf.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

ok in all seriousness I am utterly fascinated that the three ppl on ILX who appear to have a genuine interest in stock car racing are two ivy lawyers and dc's own girl who went to grad school to study the french language

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

While all the southerners are like, oh that's so passé...

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

daria watch formula one for the crashes, my dad's a nascar fan and refuses to watch formula one cuz it's too gruesome. i'm thinking i'm going hard on the nba now or something, i'm definitely boycotting the nfl until the draft at least, i don't want to live in a world/follow a sport where the mannings, arlen spector, gregggg easterbrook, mike martz, brenda warner, etc are walking around all vindicated and shit. fuck that. mike vick's in jail and tom coughlin has a trophy. we live in a world without magic.

balls, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

Um, I guess if the dogs were robots, maybe?
Stock car racing is massive where I grew up. I can't even tell you how many #3 memorials there were around town. What can I say, my dad was a race fan (not so much anymore --> golf), so I watched stock cars because he did. I wish I still had my Intimidator Tour '91 t-shirt, I bought it with my allowance money :)

I also liked drag racing - Kenny Bernstein was my favorite, he was racing funny cars then but I think he switched to dragsters after that?

daria-g, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

I think I didn't watch formula one because it was so european. :) I will have to find this awesome article in the Wash Post magazine where the writer is just completely befuddled by the NASCAR phenomenon and ends up sitting on top of an RV outside the track drinking moonshine

daria-g, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 February 2008 06:03 (seventeen years ago)

dude the worst thing i've ever seen was formula one driver tom pryce hitting a race marshall at 170 mph, which is just about the weirdest/grossest thing i've ever seen.

On lap 22, a 19 year old marshall, Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren, crossed the track to extinguish a fire on Renzo Zorzi's retired Shadow during racing conditions and was struck by Tom Pryce's Shadow at high speed. The impact killed both Pryce and Van Vuuren instantly: Van Vuuren from the impact of the collision, Pryce due to head injuries inflicted by the fire extinguisher that Van Vuuren was carrying. The impact from the fire extinguisher ripped Pryce's helmet from his head, causing the chin strap to nearly decapitate the unfortunate Welshman. Pryce's car continued on down the main straight with his helmetless body still in the cockpit until it finally left the track at the first corner, taking the Ligier of Jacques Laffite out of the race in the process.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

i mean honestly in all seriousness a person who could watch that game, regardless of who they were rooting for, and decide to BOYCOTT FOOTBALL over it, is a person that i never want anything to do with ever again. that's like some billy bellsichicks level of "you actually always honestly hated this game and everything about it, didn't you?" kind of bullshit. though treating the mannings like they hitler and then in the same breath still crying MONTHS LATER over a man who murdered puppies probably indicates the same thing so whatevs, blount.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

i still actually fail to see what ELI manning has done that is so whiny and/or offensive to warrant the hatred. being born with the last name manning should not be enough to warrant unsupported tirades against him as a person, regardless of what you think of his playing ability? i mean, gimme an example, blount. the dude doesn't open his fucking mouth. except for the times he's openly dissed archie or peyton, i guess, which is where the misplaced hatred is coming from anyway.

the idea that dan marino or brett favre were/are somehow less of douchebags than eli manning or MAYBE EVEN TOM BRADY??? is amazing to me.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

i just realized i know eli manning's parents names without having to google them. football season may have ended right on time.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

too right. it's one thing to know the name of eli's father b/c he was, like, a well known qb. but when you start knowing players' mama's names?

i blame society in general, but fox in particular.

think of how ubiquitous mama mcnabb or mama hasselback have been the last few years? do you know their names? probably not, and you shouldn't! even portis's mama is a low grade cult hero in dc and i don't her name.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 7 February 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

God, I couldn't imagine playing "Rocky Top" even once.

Did you play directly into the microphones that they use inside Neyland?

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 7 February 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

No.
I do think I have our auditorium recording from 1998 lying around somewhere though.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 7 February 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

Martin's role on the national championship team caused a minor controversy on the University of Tennessee campus; some Knoxville African-American leaders said that since Peyton Manning, who did not win a championship, had had a street named after him after leaving the university, not considering the same for Martin would be racism. In response, South Stadium Drive was renamed Tee Martin Drive.

SEVEN years in junior high/high in GREENBRIER TENNESSEE REPRESENT for a team that may have won 16 games over that time span then quit before going to college.
