Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 August 2008 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

"its that puke inside of a pumpkin orange. and i dont like pumpkins."

deeznuts, Friday, 1 August 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

i dont like dogs or pumpkins either :D

J0rdan S., Friday, 1 August 2008 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

fwiw i think the gators are winning it all again this year >_<

J0rdan S., Friday, 1 August 2008 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

USC vs Florida Gs?

i hate them both so much, though i think i actually hate UF more now

deeznuts, Monday, 4 August 2008 01:20 (sixteen years ago)

meyer is probably the biggest prick in college football, for one thing

deeznuts, Monday, 4 August 2008 01:21 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know, Rodriguez is right up there.

leavethecapital, Monday, 4 August 2008 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

idk, saban's a real contender for that crown imo

georgia ranked no. 1 in usa today preseason poll, makes me a lil nervous, florida prob has more legitimate claim to top spot - better defense, offense probably not as good but a more well-rounded team. uga's 2007 was probably their best season since i've been alive - first time since herschel was here that they beat auburn and florida in the same year! - we'll see if they can repeat some of dat ~*magic*~ i guess

challops-lite: paul johnson will be the best hc in the acc w/i 2 or 3 years. not expecting much from tech this year, flush w/defensive talent but i think they'll miss jon tenuta's crazyass schemes a lil. not much else to say imo~

cankles, Friday, 8 August 2008 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

whoa welcome back cank

georgia no longer close to #1

deeznuts, Sunday, 17 August 2008 04:56 (sixteen years ago)

Petrino wins any "biggest prick in college football" competition, doesn't he?

I'm just happy to see the Tide ranked pre-season (even if it is 23). The fact that Auburn is 10 is pretty laughable, though.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:04 (sixteen years ago)

laughably low or laughably high? i think auburn takes the west this year

balls, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:38 (sixteen years ago)

High. Tiger fans are in for a year of disappointment.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

agree strongly w/ canks assessment of pj btw

balls, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:43 (sixteen years ago)

I only say that re: Auburn because they have a lot of talent going out and not enough coming in. Saban has been swallowing up all the state's top recruiting.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:48 (sixteen years ago)

Tiger fans are in for a year of disappointment. - lol how many teams on bama's sched will this apply to this year? a guy i know who knows alot more than me has bama taking the west w/ the iron bowl probably deciding it. if there was a playoff i'd take the dawgs to win but since there ain't (i'm anti-playoff ftr) i'd say florida over ohio state is my guess as of this date.

balls, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:51 (sixteen years ago)

I think LSU will take the west this year, with 2009 being the first year of Bama's real re-emergence. Auburn's already hurting tho.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:55 (sixteen years ago)

Picking Gators for the east, but I know it could as easily be the Dawgs.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:56 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know why but crazy (and i mean crazy = insane not crazy = enthusiastic) bama fans don't annoy me at all whereas crazy (just meaning 'really really devoted') gators or esp god esp vols fans i detest so so so much. anyhow never get tired of posting this -

balls, Sunday, 17 August 2008 06:59 (sixteen years ago)

Vols fans are the scum on the SEC pond.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

i was gonna do bowl predictions, but i dont know the picking rotations and shit so

acc: vt- they've got rb problems, but the coaching staff is so solid + i'm wary of clemson's acc road games in the second half of the season: @ wake, @ bc, @ fsu, @ uva. i'll believe clemson can do it when they actually do it

big 10: ohio st- zzzz, i think they'll lose two games, but they should be able to lose one and still get in the rose bowl

big 12: oklahoma- really really really good team, i think they're in the national title unless they fuck up the title game once again

big east: west virginia?- i think uconn could sneak in here. usf has a brutal road schedule

pac 10: usc- it's gonna be a while, isn't it?

sec: florida- they might get sunk by injuries but they have the best offense out of the big six conferences, and i'll buy into the "defense is a year older!" thing. they've got DB problems which scares me, but they lost to auburn by 3 last year and lsu by 4 or else they might've been in the nat'l title

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:07 (sixteen years ago)

florida fans are the worst

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:09 (sixteen years ago)

i think nat'l title is okla v uf

at larges: mizzou, georgia, byu and... clemson? i guess wisconsin if ohio st gets into the national title?? i think we're looking @ usc vs ohio st rose bowl rematch, though

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:13 (sixteen years ago)

Raise your hand if you think 2008 will be Paterno's and Bowden's final year.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:22 (sixteen years ago)

they've at least got a successor lined up for bowden + he seems to think the writing is on the wall. paterno just seems in denial to me, plus i think he has a complex about the whole thing that bowden doesn't

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:24 (sixteen years ago)

I think you're right. Bowden seems like he'd be glad to retire, but no one's brave enough to ask him to. Paterno is oblivious to, well...everything.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 August 2008 07:36 (sixteen years ago)

I'm like everyone else, I don't understand all the preseason Georgia love.
And Pittsburgh at no.25, talent wise I can see it, but Dave freakin' Wannstedt people.

leavethecapital, Sunday, 17 August 2008 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

i understand the preseason georgia love, they're insanely talented and have a great coach (they nearly made the championship game last year w/ a freshman o-line), their schedule is just way way too brutal. if the thinking is that no team goes undefeated this year then yeah i could see georgia somehow pulling off a one-loss season and then definitely deserving a spot in the game, but undefeated i can't picture.

balls, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:20 (sixteen years ago)

how do you pick oklahoma over usc?? did you see mizzou last year, for one thing? theyre the real deal. no one in the pac 10 is in the same league as usc

georgia has like a one in a million shot but like everyones saying UF for sure (at least) is gonna knock them off

deeznuts, Monday, 18 August 2008 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

so this shit started

deeznuts, Saturday, 30 August 2008 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

kind of a boring day

lol @ vt, usc looked just incredible, michigan looks "interesting"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 August 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

next week gameday is at uf for fla/miami, which is apparently the game of the week

we don't need that spotlight :(

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 August 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

we being miami

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 August 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

illinois v mizzou & alabama clemson tonight! both must-sees

j0rdan yr at mizzou right are you going to the game?

also how is that game of the week

deeznuts, Saturday, 30 August 2008 23:11 (sixteen years ago)

nah im not going, i don't care enough about mizzou fball to go to stl to see them. i will be watching it though, but since kind of curious about clemson im kinda sad that i wont be able to see much of the game

there aren't any games b/w ranked teams next week, so uf v miami at least has name recognition. also, abc is carrying a nascar game nex sat night and cbs has the us open so uf/miami will be the only cfb game in prime time next week

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 August 2008 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

uf is gonna win by like 30 though

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 August 2008 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

bamas gonna be a monster in 2 years time

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 00:21 (sixteen years ago)

ya

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 August 2008 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

kinda lovin this shit right now

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 01:43 (sixteen years ago)

happy to see rich rodriguez lose his UM opener. always happy to see wannstadt lose

johnny crunch, Sunday, 31 August 2008 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

It's going to be a long season in both Pittsburgh and Ann Arbor.

leavethecapital, Sunday, 31 August 2008 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't seen a Bama team so in control of their own destiny since Gene Stallings was coaching. zomg

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 31 August 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

yeah im a bama man as of tonight

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

seems appropriate for a troll to root for roll tide

as we used to say

ROUND THE BOWL
DOWN THE HOLE
ROLL etc

El Tomboto, Sunday, 31 August 2008 04:00 (sixteen years ago)

the best thing that could happen for Nick Saban is that he catches some disease and puts his millions (and booster $$) into trying to find a cure

clemson's linemen looked pathetic, though. that game tells you most of why the SEC is the most important conference (and the biggest academic joke, year-on-year)

El Tomboto, Sunday, 31 August 2008 04:02 (sixteen years ago)

Admirers of new U-M regime get a reality check early on

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080831/COL22/808310502

Rodriguez said he couldn't fully evaluate what he saw because he "has to watch the tape," and I think we ought to emphasize "has to."

When Rodriguez walks from his seat to the screen, he will gain more yardage than his running game did in the first half.

Andy K, Sunday, 31 August 2008 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

if i were to try to cultivate an interest in ncaa football, what would be some likable teams i could start to follow?

horseshoe, Sunday, 31 August 2008 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

USC is always good, but it's entirely possible you could grow to hate them. Alabama's on the rise. For that matter, pretty much anyone in the SEC is good television (except Tennessee, who may or may not be good, but I can't endorse them because I hate them and their head coach so much I get hives).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 31 August 2008 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

notre dame horseshoe

notre dame

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

yeah usc is the shit

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 August 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

anyone who picks usc to follow is a fucking pussy

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

thanks guys! i will learn about this usc.

horseshoe, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

incredibly courageous of you horseshoe, to be a bandwagon usc fan in this day & age

i salute you you are a great american & collegiate football will be better for your input

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

motherfucker in the real world i'm a Bills fan; i've earned myself a lifetime of bandwagon-ing in other arenas.

horseshoe, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha im actually convinced by that line of argument!

enjoy your retarded new team

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

RUTGERS

max, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

okay nm i actually watched the video ade linked to at the top of the thread and i think i've found my new team even if means disloyalty to peyton.

horseshoe, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

lol i forgot about that video

horseshoe you realize you are going with deeznuts on this one right

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

hs, i started out by hating on other teams more than i really rooted for any of them. idk if you have any regional ties outside of buffalo but i just picked tech and georgia since i grew up here (more tech since it's in atlanta) (always felt weird about this since neither is my mater, part of the southern college football pickup-truck alumni tradition that i never really understood)(i have zero problem hating on the vols or gators etc tho!!). mostly i just watch the 'big' games with highly ranked teams that i don't have much rooting interest in. i'll also go out of my way to watch teams that run some of the more inventive schemes (texas tech, west virginia when richrod was there, haven't seen what he's done in michigan yet)

cankles, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

"i have zero problem hating on the vols or gators etc tho!!"

is this because of the orange thing for you too??

"i'll also go out of my way to watch teams that run some of the more inventive schemes (texas tech, west virginia when richrod was there, haven't seen what he's done in michigan yet)"

i do this too but TT is too one-dimensional for me; i have a dislike for pass-only offenses especially

UF sadly runs a rock-solid + explosive offense that i love to watch

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

bama's pretty hateable bcz of saban's presence; never hated arkansas (why bother lol) but will delight in their every loss now that petrino's onboard

cankles, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

im looking forward to alabama restoring rightful order in the SEC & college football fuck these florida schools & LSU

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

they some snitches

cankles, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

another point in bama's favor:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBkZO6WQ278

cankles, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

mostly i just watch the 'big' games with highly ranked teams that i don't have much rooting interest in.

i guess i could try this. it seems so grown-up and mature; maybe i would develop a purer love of the game? (this is why people watch college sports, right?)

yeah, my alma mater is no good to me on this score. i worked out an intricate and self-contradictory scheme of teams i like in the nfl; if i got into ncaa, maybe i could do the same thing.

horseshoe, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

college football's a lot cooler than nfl because of the variety of offensive schemes, although everyone's gravitating towards the spread now (but there are still like a dozen variations of how it can be run in terms of run-first/pass-first etc)

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

also if you watch the 'big' games with highly ranked teams you'll be less likely to endure a real boring amateurish game

i suggested usc because they are so majestic and have just tons of great skill players but its kinda tough cuz their games are always on at 10 PM on the east coast

if i didnt already have a strong allegiance i could see myself throwing my weight behind ohio st esp cuz they are so embattled now

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

?? they just got the #1 prospect in the country & have like 80000 students fuck OSU

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

yeah deez, ohio st is really respected on a national level after being blown out in the last two national title games

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

shit horseshoe is a bills fan so ohio st is perfect!!

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

that they only got to because of their schedule

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

USC is going to fucking maul them & i will like it

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

what are you trying to argue??? im saying that ohio st, though being one of the most successful teams of the decade, is also one of the most disrespected. you disagree? what does their schedule have to do with it? what are you saying?

J0rdan S., Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

that theyre rightfully disrespected!

they got blown out the last 2 yrs because they dont stack up with the cream of the SEC or w/ the likes of USC

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, Ohio St. is all smoke & mirrors.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 31 August 2008 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

Also, why people wanna hate on Saban? Dude's golden. Hell, I would've left stupid-ass Wayne Huizenga in the dust too given the opportunity.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 31 August 2008 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

has nothing to do with the dolphins - dude's just a tool, str8 up

cankles, Monday, 1 September 2008 02:26 (sixteen years ago)

yeah he's a notorious asshole esp to the press, no one really has anything nice to say about him except for whoever is currently writing his check

J0rdan S., Monday, 1 September 2008 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

You can always just root for who has the cool unis. I like Cal because the uniforms are classic and they're not USC.

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/cal/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/2241230.jpeg

leavethecapital, Monday, 1 September 2008 02:52 (sixteen years ago)

The best unis in California belong to UCLA.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 September 2008 07:19 (sixteen years ago)

haha no i totally feel you, i'm the same way! i couldn't get into college ball for the longest time because there was no narrative for me to hang my hat on; i'm not one of those complete football junkies who can be delighted watching just any given HS or pop warner game. i guess what happened was, as i began paying more attn to pro ball i also began picking up ancillary knowledge of the college game along the way, to the point that i eventually wanted to start watching (after getting to know the characters, rivalries, etc.) (rivalries are a v.v.v.v.v. big part of what drives ncaa football's popularity imo)

really, the fan passion is the biggest thing that distinguishes it, it's even more based on loyalties and whatnot than pro ball imo. also, the festivities surrounding gameday are as big of a ritualized tradition as watching the games, maybe bigger. in athens it always feels like (to me anyway) the game's an excuse for tailgating and drinking. which is often the case w/the NFL too but it's def magnified here. football culture in the south is a little weird/unique anyway, like women here of every age dress to the nines for every dawgs game. i don't think that happens outside of the south/SEC ball.

also, watching college ball makes draft time more fun (you know, that dead zone in early spring when there's no football and you're dying for anything pigskin-related) because you get to imagine players you followed playing for your team and project what their pro careers could be like.

cankles, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

I never even considered that someone would like Cal's uniforms, and they're my team!

Nice win over Michigan State, but I guess they're not very good this year?

I can't bother to care about anything beyond my team's conference or top-25 matchups, and the BCS system is boring.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

Nick Saban seems classy compared to Petrino.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think I could dislike a player more than I dislike Jimmy Clausen. Something about how he looks just makes me want to murder him.

Also, East Carolina is an unstoppable force.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

dude his brothers all looked like equivalent douchebags at best he cant help his genes

DZL (deeznuts), Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

and my god what i wouldnt give for ECU in a title game right now

DZL (deeznuts), Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

see i think clausen kinda looks like a baller but that team is just awful

usc and oklahoma look like the two best teams to me. i rescind my pick of florida for the national title unless they can get a running game. miami's defense was awful last year, and even though we have a new coordinator/ a bunch of new players there's no reason why the gators shoud've been dominated like that for 3 quarters. i guess uga might come out of the sec after all

its sad he was a ringtone poster (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

Gators tear it up Week 1 and then slow down for 2 or 3 weeks every year, like clockwork. They're still in the running.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

USC it's hard to say, because beating Virginia this year doesn't seem like a hard thing to do.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

how is hard to say USC is the most loaded ass team on the planet year in & year out since like 2003? theyre gonna roll over OSU

DZL (deeznuts), Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

OSU crash & burn imminent

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

^^maybe me & JF are just weird-ass traditionalists as far as this stuff is concerned but i agree w/ him on all counts

for ex. the idea that the gators wont have a substantial ground game in meyers era is laughable to me

DZL (deeznuts), Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i think boeckmann's td/int ratio vs his last for D1 opponents is like 2/6 or something. i imagine that the usc game will end up something like the last two nat'l titles (33-17 or something)

its sad he was a ringtone poster (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

42-17

DZL (deeznuts), Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:32 (sixteen years ago)

ow is hard to say USC is the most loaded ass team on the planet year in & year out since like 2003? theyre gonna roll over OSU.

I won't be surprised if this happens, but I try not to make a positive assessment of any team until I see them beat a good team, regardless of their past achievements.

Yes, I am a robot.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

WVU looked absolutely terrible against East Carolina. If WVU loses to Colorado, Bill Stewart's head will be carried around town on a pike as all the couches in Morgantown go up in flames.

leavethecapital, Thursday, 11 September 2008 00:08 (sixteen years ago)

I'm pretty neutral when it comes to OSU but they'd better put up some sort of fight Saturday night. They're 10.5 point underdogs which is ridic for the pride of the Big Ten. Big Ten y u brake heart of hearts.

I'm betting heart over head in this one and going OSU. Goodbye $100.

brownie, Thursday, 11 September 2008 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

see im not neutral at all, i hate the big ten quite a lot & hate betting esp. in big 10 conference games, but agree here that the 10.5 is too many pts & im taking THE osu

johnny crunch, Thursday, 11 September 2008 02:33 (sixteen years ago)

wow i feel sorry for you both NOT

i mean theyre gonna get stomped its gonna be embarrassing come ON

DZL (deeznuts), Thursday, 11 September 2008 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

Buckeyes' Wells now doubtful for USC

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells did not practice Thursday morning and is now unlikely to play Saturday when the fifth-ranked Buckeyes take on top-ranked Southern California.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Wells was experiencing lingering soreness in his right foot.

brownie, Thursday, 11 September 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

the real problem with that is that if the game is somehow even remotely close we're still going to have to here from bitchy OSU fans about how they deserve another shot at the title when they run the rest of the table

Everyone's asking that question. I always thought it was a bad hire, but I was willing to take a wait and see attitude. I've seen enough. The guy can't cut it on the major college level.

Stewart is good lesson for college football programs on how not to select a coach. After Richie Rod left in a huff, WVU didn’t take the time to conduct a real coaching search. Sure, Terry Bowden was sniffing around, but he's been out of coaching for nearly a decade. Plus, there were some character issues. I know I know we're WVU and didn't give flying fuck about "character" when Pacman was groping every terrified stripper from Morganhole to the Pennsylvania state line, or Chris Henry punching people out and getting high. But, it does matter when you're recruiting and trying to separate alumni from their money. We could have gotten Skip Holtz, Todd Graham, Butch Jones, Jerry Moore or any number of hot up and comers, but no, a bunch of hung-over frat boys masquerading as an athletic department tapped Coach Stew. We are so screwed.

If the Red Raiders lost, they'd have to root for Oklahoma State to beat the Sooners the following weekend. Texas Tech faced a similar scenario in '02 when it went to Oklahoma with a shot at winning the division but lost 60-15.

Bomb Sackantino (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 December 2008 07:19 (sixteen years ago)

hey cankles my friends and i were talkin about something tonight and i think you may be able to shed some light.

how much has the spread hurt nfl scouting? all the most successful qbs this year run spreads and im wondering if nfl scouts are just guessing even more than normal wrt who can make the transition. we were talking specifically about sam bradford. he reminds me a lot of brady -- lots of short high percentage passes, never really has to avoid a pass rush consistently, can make the "big arm" throws when he needs to -- but we couldn't definitely say that he was going to be good in the nfl, and more than that we had no idea what the nfl scouting consensus was on him? u got any thoughts about this

Bomb Sackantino (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 December 2008 07:24 (sixteen years ago)

Bradford's only a sophomore now, though, so it's hard to tell what he'll be like in a season or two.

Tebow will be a Jamarcus/Vince-style flop, methinks. Unless that RAH RAH TEAM stuff really works somewhere in the NFL.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 7 December 2008 07:28 (sixteen years ago)

he's not going to play qb but dude is too big and athletic not to be a success somewhere -- like peyton hillis style everything type of dude

Bomb Sackantino (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 December 2008 07:38 (sixteen years ago)

back to the spread thing, i feel like nfl types are jizzing over stafford because of his measurables even though i don't think he's ever dominated a college game in his career (on a this dude can't be stopped tip -- bradford, mccoy, tebow, harrell all have made ppl feel like this i think) but does it also have to do w/ the fact that he plays in a pro-style offense? HE seems like a russell type bust to me

Bomb Sackantino (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 December 2008 07:40 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen articles and talking heads on TV saying the spread is causing problems with development as so many QBs have footwork problems having to work taking the snap from the center, as so much of the spread is in a shotgun. This causes problems when they get into the pros in a west coast style offense where they have to be tight taking 3, 5 or 7 steps and then throwing to a precise area on the field. As illustrations, some were pointing out that Matt Ryan was more prepared as BC ran more of a traditional pro style offense.

I think with some college QBs, you never really know how good they are because if they are on a top college team, they usually have a way better line and skills players around them. I think this is why you see so many guys like Tony Romo or Jeff Garcia come out of nowhere drafted in the dregs while so many guys from the U, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, etc. fail. It is pretty easy to be a QB at Florida when probably both of your wide outs, some of your line or running back are all going to be in the pros. Look at the guys Ken Dorsey was playing with at Miami, dude was playing with Najeh Davenport, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Jeremy Shockey and Andre Johnson!

It will be interesting to see how Tim Tebow does in the pros. The one thing that Tebow has that a bunch of those Fla, FSU, Miami-U guys that failed didn't have is that he is freaking huge. I could almost see the guy being a Rofflesburger/McNair type player if he makes it in the pros.

lol humanitarian bowl:

BOISE - The match up is different every year but to Humanitarian Bowl organizers one thing remains the same: making money.

So what can Boise expect with this year's H-bowl game?

This year the Boise State Broncos are headed to sunny San Diego, leaving the Humanitarian Bowl orange-less again. But BSU ticket agents say don't let the lack of lines fool you. They say their phones have been ringing off the hook, not only for Poinsettia Bowl seats, but also for the H-Bowl match up.

"Now that we know its Nevada and Maryland people are excited about that match up," said Anita Guerricabeitia, assistant director for ticket sales.

Humanitarian Bowl officials admit they wanted BSU to stay and play on the blue turf.

"Of course it's a big boost to us on the revenue side when we have Boise State because we basically sell every seat in the stadium," said Kevin McDonald, Executive Director for the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl.

Last year 26,000 people braved the December cold to watch the game. While some fans made the trek to Boise McDonald says they rely on locals to help fill the seats.

"The success of this bowl is really based on travel not coming from the ACC, we like the fact we get a marque name coming from the ACC."

"It has a real positive impact whether it's locals or whether it's out of town folks," said Bobbie Patterson, Executive Director for the Boise Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Patterson says on average a visitor spends about $240 a day when they come to the city. With the H-Bowl a week after the Poinsettia Bowl this year the hope is those BSU fans who made the trip to California will be back to help out come December 30th.

"It generates enthusiastic spending," said Patterson.

As of Monday afternoon the University of Maryland says it's sold about 16 tickets to the game. The University of Nevada says it's sold 8 so far.

The Ballad of Gene Chizik

jordan - i'm not a stafford fan, but it's hard for me to be objective. he reminds me of russell tho, yeah. probably not as much of a surefire bust (better mechanics, less lazy) but i wanna see him play that senior year before putting a real grade on him. i like bradford enough but it's hard to evaluate any of OU's skill position guys because of that giganto o-line. playing in a pro-style offense definitely helps stafford's case, and i would be skeptical with a lot of the spread types, esp tebow (NB. i don't see tebow as a bust, because i don't think he'll be drafted high enough or even picked as a QB - there should be a place for him in the nfl tho) - i almost think that you have to throw big time production out the window when studying a college QB's career, because it's so context dependent. i think the real evaluation has to start with work ethic, study skills etc, stuff that you don't really find out about until you start examining these guys really closely and hearing what the scouts who have tracked them for years have to say. stafford's weight problems are a red flag to me re: his work ethic, which is why i want to see another year out of him and see if he improves in any areas.

bill james owns the bcs

The problems with the BCS are:

1. That there is a profound lack of conceptual clarity about the goals of the method;
2. That there is no genuine interest here in using statistical analysis to figure out how the teams compare with one another. The real purpose is to create some gobbledygook math to endorse the coaches' and sportswriters' vote;
3. That the ground rules of the calculations are irrational and prevent the statisticians from making any meaningful contribution; and
4. That the existence of this system has the purpose of justifying a few rich conferences in hijacking the search for a national title, avoiding a postseason tournament that would be preferred by the overwhelming majority of fans.
