2005 NFL Playoff Thread -- Predictions & Comments

There is a week to go and a few playoff berths to be decided, but the Playoffs are here.

Indy, NE, Cinci, J-Ville & Denver have clinched in the AFC. Pitts, SD and KC are going for the last Wild Card spot with the Steelers probably having the best bet having to play Detroit.

The NFC is a bit more open as only the Seahawks, Bears and Giants with clinched spots. There are quite a few scenarios for the remaining two spots. At this point, I think everything favors Tampa and Washington if they win they are in.

The AFC playoffs are going to be tight top to bottom. The Pats (6-1), Bengals (4-1) and Steelers (3-1) have all been hot since getting beat by Indy.

KC and SD are both probably going to miss the playoffs and I think they are better than most of the NFC teams.

Meet back here for predictions once we get past week 17!
FWIW: Pittsburgh, Carolina, Tampa and Washington
And isn't San Diego pretty much out, short of some miracles?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

I think SD gets in if they win and the Steelers and Chiefs lose.

earlnash, Tuesday, 27 December 2005 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think so.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the Superchargers are out altogether. But I'm in a pickle trying to pick the winner of this week's SD/DEN game. Is SD playing for pride while DEN takes a rest, or will DEN come out full force and make it a close game? Fucking Shanahan... I never know what's going on upstairs with that guy.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:58 (nineteen years ago)

ALRIGHT IT'S GO TIME:

WILD CARD PIX MUTHAFUCKAZ:

Washington over Tampa (maybe the closest game)
New England over Jacksonville (tight till the third or fourth)
N.Y. Giants over Carolina (barely)
Pittsburgh over Cincinnati (in a blowout)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 January 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

Washington over Tampa 17-10
NE over Jax 28-3
NYG over Carolina 23-0
Pittsburgh over Cincy 31-17

Then:

Bears over Washington
Seattle over NYG

NE over whoever

Seattle over Bears : (
Indy over NE

Indy over Seattle

Oh, so it's all the way is it?

Well, I pretty much agree with you on that lineup anyway.
'Cept I think Washington might Cinderella to the finals.

Washington
New England
Carolina
Cinci

Cinci already beat Pittsburgh this year and I can see Carson Palmer playing out of his mind (um, moreso than he has all season) and squeaking out a win. Then they go to Denver and lose 33-10.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:07 (nineteen years ago)

Washington -- I kind of figured these guys were close to being a good team, but am a bit suprised they got it done this year. Brunell has gotten hot in the passing game and because of this Portis is running all over the place. Their defense was good last year and not bad even when the ole' ball coach was screwing everything up.

Tampa -- They are about the same team as the Skins except they have a youngin' at QB. Until they got rolled by the Pats, I was thinking they may be the team to win the NFC. I'm not as sure now, but they are at home and the core of the defense has been in the playoffs a bunch.

J-Ville -- I've been impressed by their improvement the past couple of years, as I have seen them play four times against the Colts. Their defense is a bunch of rough necks, especially up front. Considering how well Leftwich played his senior year limping around on one leg, I think he will be OK coming off the injury and starting in the playoffs. I personally had a feeling Leftwich might be the best of that big group of QBs that year out of college, he seems so relaxed and completely in control.

NE- These guys are like Dracula, no one is going to "really" believe they are dead until the sun is up and the body isn't moving and has a big stake in their heart. They have "Seymore" and Tedi back on D, so maybe they might have it going on. I think they really miss having Rodney Harrison in the d-backfield, as teams seem to be able to pass like mad against them. I think Brady is going to have to come up big and J-ville has a pretty good pass defense.

Carolina- I did not see them play this year. They seem to be like most NFC teams which are fantastic for a week, then turn to suck another week. It does not appear that their defense is quite as good this season.

Giants- The biggest thing with the Giants is putting the rock in the end zone, as they seem to be able to move the ball at will a good portion of the time. They are their own worse enemy as they have either stupid penaltys, dropped passes, turnovers, missed field goals or giving up big returns that costs them games or keeps them close. How will they do, hard to figure. The defense is good, but they are not immune to stupid penalties and giving up big plays.

Steelers- Big running game and they are good at stopping the run, which is usual Pittsburgh football. They don't seem to be as good at rushing the passer this season. I think the big thing that hurt the Steelers this year against the Colts and Bengals was getting away from their usual MO and trying to shoot it out. They have blown a bunch of chances at getting to the Super Bowl, so part of me thinks they are due.

Cinci- They were kicking it big time until they clinched their division. The Buffalo game was a wash, they gave up a punt return and interception for a TD (to the same guy no less) and flubbed the game away. Last week they looked like they were playing the last game of the pre-season. I thought Marvin Lewis was going to blow a socket, he was freaking out on people so hard on the sidelines last week. I think they have been humbled a bit, so it will be interesting to see how they come out on Sunday. The O is going to have to put some pressure on the Steelers and try and break them out of controlling the clock on the ground.

Washington/TB is a toss up in my mind because both teams have been known to bring their "bad" game and their "good" game seemingly indiscriminantly...I'll go with Washington but wouldn't be surprised if TB pulls it out.
Giants over Carolina, in a close one (stupid penalties will drag this one out)
NE over Jacksonville (though I'd not prefer it)
Pittsburgh over Cincy

IT'S MY LOCK OF THE WEEK

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 5 January 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Pittsburgh got the bigges bogus bandwagon since "Brady for mvp," or "USC best team ever." The arguments aren't ridiculous, just wrong and very popular. Smallest bandwagon ever: Denver. It's like they are in some kind of publicity blackout.

Pittsburgh, NY, NE, Tampa.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 5 January 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

laurence do you have a 1-800 number I can call?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Haha Pittsburgh does have a bogus bandwagon going on this year but it won't stop them from beating Cincy who inexplicably turned completely shit. OTM about Denver, I mean no one talks about them at all unless absolutely necessary, which is a little weird. I think Plummer wore out his media blitz bandwagon the first several years of his career where he just sucked like a vortex and the team as a whole saw its media pinnacle when Elway left, so now people are like, eh, they won their Super Bowl finally, let's talk some other shit.

that might be 90% of being a great coach!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think my friend Vince is the sole member of Broncos bandwagon outside of Colorado. According to a drunken phonecall I received the other night the Broncos will win because of the "Cleveland Curse" (ie the entire Broncos defense is made up of ex-Browns). I have four bottles of wine riding on this (I took the Colts).

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

That's intelligent.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

Well, since the Colts have never been tested it may go the Broncos way.

just as long as it's just football sense.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

My picks --

Tampa over Wash - This one can go either way. I'm going with the Bucs D to hold down Portis and force the Skins to have to air it out.

NE over J-ville - I want to pick the Jags, but the Pats seem to find that way to win. Both of these teams I think would like another crack at Indy.

NYG over Carolina - Who knows how this one will turn out. On paper, I think the Giants are the better team.

Cinci over Pitts - I'm not going against the Bengals, even though they put it on autopilot the last two weeks. It should be a good game.

earlnash, Friday, 6 January 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ally: er, no. But we do tend toward the same picks and analysis.
I'm more of a Leslie Lobo man myself.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

TB, NE, Carolina, Pitt

The only home dog winning this weekend is ZEUS.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Indy over whoever
NE over whoever

Wait, I just reread this...wouldn't NE be facing Denver if they advance? No fucking way NE over Denver.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'd want to see how they play against Jacksonville first.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed, I mean if they completely rape Jacksonville I might revise my "No fucking way" stance but that seems incredibly unlikely. And it's a different situation--they'd be playing in Denver, not Foxboro, against a rested team (not always a plus, rest can mean rust, natch). I don't really think NE has a chance against Denver.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

If any of you are inclined to bet, please be warned: I just placed my first bet of the season ($25) on the Pats tomorrow, minues 7.5.

This means that Jacksonville is a lock to cover.

kGiants = Super Bowl (TCBeing), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

My bookie is missing in action. Someone please put 100 on Pitt for me. LOCK

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, I just reread this...wouldn't NE be facing Denver if they advance? No fucking way NE over Denver.

If Cinci beats Pittsburgh then they will go to Denver (where they will get killed) and NE goes to Indy for the long-awaited WAR TO SETTLE THE SCORE.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'd take Jacksonville and 7 1/2. NE has won most of those playoff games in this run only by a TD or less. I think NE will have problems in the next round with either Indy or Denver. I'd probably rather not see the Colts play the Jags again, as odds are never as good for anyone beating a team three times in one season.

Everyone in the AFC wants another crack at Indy. Denver also got rolled out bad the last two years in the playoffs by the Colts. I think Ian Gold will try to kill Peyton Manning if he ever gets a free hit on him. John Lynch also picked up a big fine for the cheap hit he put on Dallas Clark last year.

earlnash, Friday, 6 January 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

But Cincy isn't going to beat Pittsburgh!

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

It's the 1/2 point that has me worried in the Jacksonville game.

Pitt over Cincy is the biggest lock since the PANAMA CANAL

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

But wait, I'm right still though that IF Pittsburgh and NE both win, then NE goes to Denver? Or do I have it wrong all along?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

People in Denver are sorta pissing their pants in consternation at the prospect of NE coming back to town for a rematch. I think Denver beats them again, even with their magic Bruschi back on the field.

From that Simmons article:

And that sets up something that was 20 years in the making: An unfathomable rematch of the Pats-Bears Super Bowl that traumatized me as a kid, with the Pats getting revenge as the ultimate exclamation point to the Belichick-Brady Dynasty.

I had not thought of this possibility. This coming true would heal some psychic wounds, as I grew up a Grogan/Hannah era Pats fan.

Hunter (Hunter), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

During the entire Pats-Bears debacle bowl I was screaming "Put Grogan In!!!" Tony Eason wtf! I ask you.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

That rematch isn't going to happen though. And if it did, the Bears would win by some kind of cosmic god-Ditka intervention.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

No, the Pats would win via a Clare Grogan intervention. She will steal the hearts of the Bears defense like she did to the audience in that one movie.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

Now, in garbage time, madden and michaels are going on and on about what a character Belichick is because of his hooded sweatshirt, and how it compares to the button-down landrys and lombadris of the world... when in face he probably wears a sweatshirt because coaches HAVE to wear liscensed product...

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

when, "in FACE," of course... I haven't been spelling well lately...

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Sunday, 8 January 2006 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, some head coach this year wanted to wear a suit on the sidelines and the league told him no, he had to wear logo'd product. (How long before David Stern says, "hey, wait a minute...")

truck-patch pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 8 January 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

Man, Washington's defense if FOR REALS, but I don't think they're gonna be able to shut down Alexander.
Patriots made Jacksonville look weak and they bounced back from a weak first half too. So assuming Pitt wins, which seems likely, they do Denver next? I dunno Ally. They're getting hot.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 8 January 2006 07:07 (nineteen years ago)

Even I was getting fed up with the non-stop fellation of Brady and Belichick by Michaels and Madden. Now I know how 99% of the viewership feels (me included) when watching Buck and McCarver call a Yankees game in the postseason.

"Now, in garbage time, madden and michaels are going on and on about what a character Belichick is because of his hooded sweatshirt"

Coincidentally, the NFL is running advertisements for their hooded sweatshirts during many commerical breaks.

The Bucs D was even better than Washington, but no one for Tampa could make a play on O except Simms. That pass was on the money and should have been caught.

Shitty weekend...none of the games were any count and Palmer gets his knee blown out, which is far worse than just losing the game.

I'm glad I had band practice and didn't see the Bengals game until the 4th quarter.

earlnash, Monday, 9 January 2006 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'm tempted to pick against Seattle because Washington is arguably the hotter team, is strong against the run, and Seattle finds a way to choke every year. Over/under on dropped Seattle passes next week = 5.5? I have a weird feeling about the Bears too, but somehow I don't see Washington @ Carolina for the NFC championship.

I'm also picking NE because I have to. Also: it's Jake Plummer. Indy will win easily.

Seattle over Washington (but I'm a little dubious; it'll likely be a flat out stomping by Seattle, but if it's close it favors Washington)
Denver over New England (I'm really not buying the hype)
Indy over Pittsburgh (but I think it'll be closer than most would imagine)
Carolina over Chicago (but they better bring that fuckin' running game I saw last Sunday)

Re: Denver: I don't trust Plummer to not fuck it up against NE's defense. I don't buy the NE hype and think they're going down to Indy if they make it past Denver, but I just don't quite have it in me to pick Denver for this game, due to my lack of trust in their offense. They've been getting it done this year, sure, but still...I'd love for them to prove me wrong (I'd rather see Denver/Indy anyway, fuck a ratings magnet).

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

I had no idea this forum existed. I feel like I've missed everything.

Anyway, Carolina first of all. This game is about vengence, and the stephen davis experience is finally over, we can get back to running the ball like in 2003. This game reminds me of both Philly games in 2003, they beat the panthers easily at home, but then lost to them in the NFC championship game. John Fox will come up with something to keep Jake from getting sacked 8 times again. That was absurd.

Other games, in a nutshell. I'll take washington, believe it or not. Has hasselback already said that they are going to take the ball and win the game yet? Actually, I just want the panthers to get a home game.

Indy. Duh.

The interesting thing about denver is that they were 13 and 3. Mike Shanahan didn't get a single vote for coach of the year! Jake Plummer is his quarterback!

Jeff. (Jeff), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and Pats over Broncos.

Jeff. (Jeff), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

Shanny got no love, but I think one reason so many teams are interviewing Kubiak is that he works with Plummer, and if he can "remake" Jake, he can work with David Carr or whichever youngster is coming up.

I am so tired of all of the Brady-love that now I just want Denver to annihilate NE, if possible. Some Boston-based sportswriter was on the radio this morning explaining the tao of Belichick, and how his players play not just for themselves, but to please him, while Shanahan's blah blah blah. It was so thoroughly nauseating that almost all of my Patriot affinity was extinguished in a torrent of loathing. There's no way I can even try to be objective about it now. I do think that if both Pats and Donkeys play their best games, Denver wins at home.

My picks have been ass thus far, so why not continue with:

Washington
Denver
Indy
Carolina

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

Belicheck--thanks for the great run, see you next year, and try not to be such a turd at your pressies.

Hunter (Hunter), Sunday, 15 January 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking the Pats were in trouble early in the game, as they seemed to be freaking out on the refs nearly every play both on O and D. It seemed to me that they were wound up pretty tight. Either way, they were bound to have a playoff game where every bounce and call went their way.

I don't want to hear a damn bit of complaining from any NE fan about that ball popping loose on Bailey considering they made their run on that blown fumble call against the Raiders. They better not blow Troy Brown a bunch of static over that fumble either, considering if the Steelers don't fumble it away on a punt return and give up a punt return for a TD, they don't get to the superbowl that first year either. I don't want to hear a damn thing about that pass interference call against Lalie either, considering that NE (esp. Ty Law) got away with mugging Marvin Harrison two years ago in the AFC title game. Shit happens.

Tom Brady kind of had teh CRAZY EYES in the Pats press conference. Belly Chick was about to vomit on himself too! I hope this is the beginning of the end of a long meltdown. But I'm pretty vindictive like that. God the Pats played terribly. Sloppy, sloppy game all around but there isn't a single category where the Horsies outclassed the Pats. The Broncs would like to put a whuppin on the Colts after they got rolled the past two years. Is the third time a charm?

I've also got a weird feeling about the Steelers, as they are the anti-Pats who seem to have everything go the wrong way at one point in the playoffs and as often as they have been around are probably due to have the bounces go right.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 15 January 2006 06:00 (nineteen years ago)

the steelers are possibly the most all around lovable team ever - polamalu's crazy hair, bettis' last season, cowher looks like he could be my dad, and ben's blog is about being such a reasonable person, whereas peyton manning's is probably about nailing chicks in the ass and doing lines w/fred durst.

dar1a g (daria g), Sunday, 15 January 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

agreed daria. i have mixed feelings abt it tho - i mean, i understand wanting to see them eat shit, ppl just get an assfull of the same team winning over and over and over. hell, i kinda wanted to see them fall this year. but i think they're pretty cool dudes overall, and have handled all this dynasty bullshit in basically the least obnoxious manner possible. i'm a million times more annoyed by all the blowhards who drink deep the aura of the game and can't slobbing bradybelichick knob. i did see a lot of pats games when i was a kid too, and there's a part of me that does feel it's pretty cool that they're the team that's ended up becoming THE NEW DYNASTY OMGOMGOMG.

so which of the remaining QBs will be most likely to become the new fawnee of the ESPN/SI/Fox/CBS bros?

Peyton Manning - 20:1

Too slick, too smooth, not "gritty", doesn't grin widely nor run
much. He's down-home, not big-city. He's like a systems analyst out there, not an athlete. A robot programmed to win! Good thing he's got cuddly dudes like Marv and Edge and Tony Dungy around him, otherwise people would hate the Colts! But still, a Super Bowl win could change everything and people will remember him for that and his funny commercials and not his HAL 9000 gamesmanship.

Matt Hasselbeck 18:1

He's cocky in a manner that sportscasters hate! He makes Chad Johnson-esque promises and doesn't deliver, as evidenced by the Green Bay game a couple of years ago. Plus, he's bald. Sportscasters like a full head of hair to gaze at. Hair=American heroism. Mao was bald, Reagan was lush. You do the math.

Rex Grossman 15:1

No history here. An unknown factor. The shadow of the Tough Rookie hangs over him. It would take a Super Bowl appearance for him to earn any blowjobs from the play-by-play men of America. But if he somehow does lead the Bears to a triumph, look for him to be placed firmly in Jeff Hostetler "likeable winner" territory forever (though he'll fall short of fawning). Besides, the Bears are a defensive team. Look at what happened to Trent Dilfer! Hero worship? No!

Ben Roethlisberger 4:1

His stats aren't mind-blowing in the fantasy sense, which is a PLUS here if anything. Scruffy dude. However, he's not a runner and doesn't seem incredibly outgoing. He'd probably be an awkward wingman. But still, blue-collar! Pittsburgh! The only one who could really root AGAINST him is Terry Bradshaw, who fears his crown of "most beloved Steeler QB ever!" is slipping away from him (tough competition there, TB!). And if he wins, ZEUS will come front-and-center, and people love bitter dogs!

Jake Plummer 3:1

His first name is JAKE. He's the Johnny Damon of football, without the annoying Boston stuff. He knocked off the Pats and made some fantastic throws! He's already ahead of everyone else! If he wins the Big Game, he's gonna make everyone forget his years in Arizona/his awkward dates! Hero Time!

Jake Delhomme 2:1

His first name is JAKE. He was a castoff from NEW ORLEANS. He's a total GUNSLINGER. Remember that TD pass in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago? He tossed it and pointed to his receiver all like, "YOU MY MAN, BRO!", big grin on his face. Sportcasters LOVE that. He's got a friendly smile, looks like a tough Robert Sean Leonard (imagine if Dead Poets Society was...um...Dudes Throw It Society or something) so he's got that factor (Favre and Brady have those grins, and the ESPN dudes melt over 'em). If he wins this thing, he's going to replace the faded Favre and the emasculated Brady as your new King. Bank on it!

gear (gear), Sunday, 15 January 2006 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

Delhomme is awesome. He's from Breaux Bridge, a town that from what I can tell is nothing but gas stations selling boudin and cracklins.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 15 January 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

Not that it matters now, but I don't understand why Indy didn't punt on 4th and 16. Punting and using the three timeouts to get the ball back must be better than going for it on 4th down in the shadow of your goal line.

This is certainly turning out to be the roughest game of the postseason. The receivers are getting pounded out there (when they're not making circus catches).

If the Bears give up 400 yards of offense and still win then I'll start believing they can win the Superbowl.

Peyton's comments weren't really that bad at all and I'm not really sure what he was supposed to do after 3 different reporters badgered him about the 73 sacks. I was kinda surprised he said anything cos he's pretty famous for being best buds with his offensive linemen; otoh it ain't like he said something the entire world didn't already know.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 16 January 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

The offensive line *was* a problem yesterday, but it's unfair to throw his linemen under a bus when the entire team was outplayed and outcoached in nearly every aspect of the game.

All he had to say was "Pittsburgh's defense was really tough today". The Steelers' defensive game plan and the Colts' complete inability to adjust to it was the real problem.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 16 January 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

re: the offensive line, saying "We had protection problems" ain't exactly the same thing as saying "Our offensive line was outplayed." Cf Tiki Barber's postgame comments, for example. Should he have said it? Nah prolly not. Is it half as bad as anyone is making it out to be? No, not really. For god's sake, he's the one calling the plays and telling the dudes where to go. If he HAD actually turned around and said "Our offensive line sucked" (which, well, it did but yeah you don't say that) that'd be one thing, but he didn't. So.....? Who gives a shit? I've heard quite a few more obnoxious things said by losers this postseason (cf Tiki Barber) and actually by a winner as well so I don't quite get the controversy.

Except becuz people like to lol @ Manning for losing all the big ones which I totally understand, that is pretty funny.

49ers 39, Giants 38 (2003)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

"protection problems" can include the quarterback, who generally collaborates with the center to call blocking schemes, and also the wide receivers and backs, who block. It's a bit simplistic to say that he called out his line.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

yeah field general manning's the one making the blocking assignments when he's overruling his coach cuz his instinct tells him otherwise (and his instincts have only failed him in 90% of the big games he's played in - can't argue with success like that!). this is the same ego prima donna shit he (and to a somewhat lesser extent his brother) have pulled their entire football careers, he's the nfl's kobe only without any championships and with a milder sexual assault record. and, and this is really the worst offense, he's a dork.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but he WAVED THE PUNTING TEAM OFF THE FIELD. WHAT A LEADER.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

poly and ally:

my issue is with how he said it, and what he said. manning said "I'm trying to be a good teammate here," and said there were protection problems. this is him TRYING? he has to TRY? if he really WAS a good teammate, he would have praised pittsburgh's players and schemes, and then handled business behind closed doors. yes that also goes for tiki barber and whoever else. I don't love tom brady but at least he didn't say 'don't look at me, blame that fraud protection motherfucker.'

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

I love how shit that would be worth maybe 5 minutes of commentary and coverage on Monday Night pregame shows during the regular season all of a sudden becomes worthy of two hours of pontification by every sports analyst and former punter who can sort of wear a suit because there's only like three things to talk about during the playoffs. Peyton's "protection problems" comment is like the most throwaway bullshit that nobody on the team is even going to remember by next year's preseason but all the fanuses will keep bringing it up until super bowl blue forty two.

Also x1000 respect props to certain retired coaches and players who admitted when questioned re: Polamalu et Samuels calls that pointing at officiating when talking about winning or losing a game is for pussies (relying on referees is a lot like relying on kickers, you only have to do it if you're not that good, etc)

My pick for 40 = STEELERS D

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

in general, yeah though, who cares, the game is not won in the press conference, and neither are reputations.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

No Tom Brady said his team played a great game except for all the turnovers, cause when you turn over the ball that much you can't expect to win!! Unless you're Seattle, they're special. 5 sacks vs 5 turnovers, gee. High fives all around?

"I'm trying to be a good teammate here [and you people in the press are apparently going to spend all night asking me the same fucking question until I throw you a bone, so here you fucking go], please can we get this over with"

Internet NFL dorkwads in being able to fully and accurately parse the real meaning buried in offhand postgame press conference comments made by professional athletes whom they have nothing in common with whatsoever sans presumably same number of fingers and toes MIRACLE

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Or am I just reading this wrong because I'm only paying half attention because I'm at work and I'm supposed to be writing an article about Samuel Alito instead of arguing about football on some Inter Nets and wondering if Nick Going can really pull off two big games in a row?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Has DJ Gallo been reading this thread? Some of his "points" are practically cribbed from certain posts here!

I'm sure this is a dead issue, but Brady said that his team's best players made mistakes and included himself in that group. He also said that the Broncos played better, even though they didn't. And it's not like "you can't turn the ball over in the playoffs and expect to win" is any sort of revelation (or insult), every pre and post-game show repeats that statement a million times.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, scraps of wit like "Canada: 'Ontario native Vanderjagt boots potential game-tying kick aboot 10 yards wide' (Subhead: 'Eh')" and sprinkling "mmmkay"s throughout your acidic tagliabue impression (is it still socially acceptable to use mmmkay? i can't imagine anybody not being put on blast for that) are just covert ways of saying "I'M A MANHOLE". i liked this tho:

Denver is able to stay within striking distance, however, due to three Troy Polamalu interceptions that are overturned thanks to an obscure NFL rule requiring an interceptor to possess the ball for at least 75 seconds if he has long hair.

Sloths B. Creepin (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Gallo just read Wilbon's Monday column and decided he could make it sound more like a fifth-grade cafeteria. Success!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

I don't care what any of these dudes said in their press conferences! Losers in all sounding kind of like dickholes shockah, OTM that no one will remember what Peyton/Brady (tho yes Brady gets credit for, when he did admit they played like bad, not singling out any particular part and admitting he threw interceptions ie fucked up which is apparently beyond Manning and Barber to admit at the moment*)/Tiki/so forth said in like 2 weeks. Frustrated dudes in freaking out scandal, alert ESPN's Page 2 bitter beer faces.

* THO like I said earlier, Manning calls all the plays! So I think maybe you guys are overestimating the amount that "we" necessarily meant "everyone on the offense except me" since it's his protection schemes anyway (which is maybe why no one on the Colts seems to be bothered so far that he said it). Like I said it's light-years away from Barber calling his own coach crap and claiming everything else on the Giants was A-OK when they played Carolina, and I'm giving Barber benefit of the doubt of just being really, really pissed and not gonna go all out on him like he's some kinda douchebag.

A BOLD CLAM: Lil Manning will see a Super Bowl b4 Colonel Manning does.

You all are missing the salient point of this weekend with all your tossing and turning over Peyton Place. Plummer versus Roffleberger!!!!

I ain't gonna pretend I know what is going on in Brady, Manning, or Barber's heads when they get accosted by reporters after a loss, so I will give 'em all benefit of the doubt that the words what came out of their mouths wasn't exactly the words they meant to say outloud in all instances, ever. They ain't politicians.

I was gonna insert some photos here of Plummer and Roethlisberger but GIS isn't revealing to me a SINGLE PHOTO of EITHER OF THEM with beards. WTF.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oh is it just me or is it very apparent that no one in the world besides, maybe, the actual members of the Panthers and Seahawks gives a shit about the Panthers/Seahawks game? I got up to check my e-mail during NFL Total Access last night and, in the span of writing a reply to someone, they had apparently COMPLETELY COVERED the NFC game, and then went back to their three hour Beardo Spectacular.

I mean, I know that I don't actually give a shit about the NFC game but you'd think the networks would pretend a little.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

If Pittsburgh wins this weekend and Roffle goes to Miami I daresay this will not reflect favorably upon the Bearded Men in Sports.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone really "want" to see the Seahawks in the Superbowl? I suppose it is possible they could beat the Panthers, but I think the odds of a Superbowl being even worth watching with Seattle involed seems slim.

earlnash, Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

But Hasselbeck is so fashion.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

The only Seattle game I saw this year was the Giants debacle. I've never seem two teams trying to lose on purpose before but there it was.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

The only game I've seen worse than that Giants-Hawks game was the Redskins-Hawks game. They're kind of the worst good team in the entire world.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

"They're kind of the worst good team in the entire world."

Bingo. I saw that Giant fiasco and also watched Seattle freaking struggle with the Colts second teamers a few weeks back. The Colts did not play SEVEN starters on defense, and did not play Freeney after the first quarter and yet Jim Sorgi still had them in the game until the last four minutes of the game making passes to Troy Walters. KC and SD to me a more impressive team than Seattle, who seem to have been blessed with the easiest division in football.

I personally hope Carolina creams them.

earlnash, Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

The individual exploits of Steve Smith and Troy Polamalu have entertained me as much as any that have happened since Barry Sanders quit.

KC and SD to me a more impressive team than Seattle, who seem to have been blessed with the easiest division in football.

I think absolutely true.

Team, SoS (here, by Sagarin):
Denver, 8th hardest schedule
Pittsburgh, 14th hardest
Carolina, 27th hardest
Seattle, 32 hardest--yes, the allegedly easiest schedule in the league.
(Other notables: Indy--31st hardest, Jax--29th, Tampa--28th, Chi--26th, Cincy--21st)

Of course there's a lot more to life than SoS. I mean, Wash and NE were 3rd and 5th by these metrics and they're at home.

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Who had the hardest schedule though?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

the Browns

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

no...it is TEH CHARGERS

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I'm surprised Carolina's schedule was so easy. Their division seemed pretty damn competitive.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

oh here's something a bit weird...Philly is 4 in Sagarin's rankings, the Redskins 3 as previously mentioned, the Cowboys 6...but the Giants are 11! It seems like they should all be in the same group together, what with half their games being against one another. I am not wholly convinced that their other games were all against creampuffs; I mean the Skins played Seattle too during reg season I think.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

KC must have been second.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know how Sagarin computes his SoS, it only states that it reflects both teams played and venue played. Can somebody find other stats-based SoSs?

Hunter (Hunter), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Fan had heart attack seconds after Bettis fumble

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Those Giants and Colts games are the only two playoff teams Seattle beat, they lost the other two games to J-Ville and Washington. A win is a win, but those two wins were both pretty wack.

I think Seattle had a run like the Eagles did last year, when their division was really weak and they got to play the weakest division in the AFC.

The AFC South was a bit down this year, as Tennessee was much worse than usual and Houston was awful. It probably helped the Colts and Jags to a game or three better record than they would have had in other divisions.

I think the Steelers playing in the AFC North, which was a very competitive division probably took their record down a notch, especially since they had a bunch of injuries in the middle of the season. Pittsburgh was playing great before Rofflesburger got hurt and played well again after he got better, but that was only one of the few injuries they had. Cleveland and Baltimore were both really streaky and their defenses at times made them a decent team. They were not like Tenn, Houston, Arizona or SF, which were complete jokes most of the year.

Chicago's Defense was good, but then again, other than the Bengals they did not play many of the high powered AFC offenses (Indy, SD, KC, Denver & NE). So by the schedule, they probably appeared a bit better than expected.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, and the Seahawks are like on par with the Giants in terms of season ticket holders, but these two teams are like the Invisible Man as far as the media and apparently the majority of this message board is concerned.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Carolina is looking pretty banged up- that Peppers dude is questionable and Shaun is starting for the Seahawks. This game is no LOCK. Neither is Beard Bowl but the bets are all on.

I wonder if the invisible man grew a beard would it be visible?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 January 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I've just been focusing more on the NFC game and have noticed the coverage more. I'm rather apathetic about the AFC game, and the AFC in general.

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh you're a side taker! I thought you guys had kind of gone away after the AFC sort of caught up in SB wins. Personally I'm a fan of an NFC team but I can't get excited about either Seattle (SURPRISE) or Carolina. Carolina's logo looks like my cat, so points for them, but I don't like Smith so points away. OTOH at least they aren't Seattle, so I will pick them.

Really I think I blame Seattle for lack of coverage/mass interest in the NFC championship game. They're just so...seafoam green or something, I don't know.

i like the second verse of 'sweet shaun alexander' - "i hope mike holmgren will remember/southern man will get 1st down anyhow" or something like that. i think the afc focus is pretty much purely cuz of the steelers right? it's not like i've really heard anyone anticipating that game specifically (seriously, i heard more 'should be good!'s over 2nd round matchups than the conf championships). i thought the squawk's old unis were alright but these blue messes are still disgusting. that panthers blue looks more and more like a 'you had to be there' joke, however geoappropriate it is. peppers' status is very very concerning, hope it's just a 'let's not take any risks and have him ready on sunday' deal. i'm not changing my pixxx but i am mentally preparing myself for an all afc west superbowl. in detroit. carolina and seattle will go into OT. hasselbeck will ask for the ball and the win and after the kickoff (where the returner will be downed at the seattle 18) he will fumble the ensuing snap. whilst attempting to pick it up, he will accidentally kick it back into the end zone. panicked, he will run over to it in the end zone. all the while, john fox will smartly motion for his squad to not rush him, but to stand there, hands on hips, watching and waiting for his mistake. a terrified hasselbeck will take one knee for the safety and the carolina win.

The preponderance of smart money is on Steelers. The closer I get to the game the more I think: Broncos match up far better w/ Pitt than Indy did, and the types of scheming novelties that Pitt have relied on work once, maybe once + 1/2, in NFL. Unless Pitt are gonna bust out the statue of liberty play, I don't think they will outsmart/outscheme Denver. Pitt may still win it on brute force with Roffles and Polamalu and Bus, but it will be close. Are they gonna try to bring the thug against Denver like they did at Cincy?

The closer we get to NFC game, the more I know that I know little about those two teams. I thought Seattle looked fair to good in the few times I've seen them, but I keep thinking they are pretenders with that NFC West schedule. All I've seen on Carolina are li'l Stevie and Delhomme highlights. I guess that's good enough for me, duh.

Sloths B. Creepin (Adrian Langston), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

"Steelers- Big running game and they are good at stopping the run, which is usual Pittsburgh football. They don't seem to be as good at rushing the passer this season. I think the big thing that hurt the Steelers this year against the Colts and Bengals was getting away from their usual MO and trying to shoot it out. They have blown a bunch of chances at getting to the Super Bowl, so part of me thinks they are due."

Well it is appearant whatever lack of pass rush they didn't have in those mid season games against Cinci and the Colts have been corrected. Criminy the Steelers would have had a dozen sacks if Plummer was not crafty enough to get away.

Hasselback is looking good, but I cannot even stand to watch a game in that dank drab looking stadium. Criminy, put a little bit of white or some brighter shade of blue on those Seahawk uniforms to break up the monotny or crank up the lights or something. What are the Seahwaks supposed to be a gekko or chameleon trying to blend into their surroundings?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

it was over the minute Tatupu mosied in front of that Delhomme pass.

I actually like this Super Bowl a lot. Pittsburgh -- a rust belt team with an absolutely rabid fan base -- against a Seattle team that has never reached the big game but who boasts the reigning league MVP.

I was gonna come on here and post that little factoid but Nantz beat me to it -- anyway, yeah: Pittsburgh played in the very first game ever at Ford Field, a pre-season game against the Lions. I was at that game, and the Pittsburgh contingent was huge. I think I've been to three Pittsburgh-Detroit game, and the Steelers fans always show up in DROVES; they don't just "travel well", they are freakin mad for their team. It should make the Super Bowl in Detroit (plus the Bettis playing in his hometown thing) actually pretty darn fun.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

Here is my dream:
In an amazingly close game, Sean Alexander is voted Superbowl MVP for the losing team. He then comes out of the closet on national TV, alongside his life partner, Troy Polamalu. This cements their status as burliest power couple in the history of time and makes the NFL EVEN FUCKING COOLER.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 January 2006 03:58 (nineteen years ago)

You also have the difference in team owners, with the Rooney's being apart of the original NFL group and the Seahawks being owned by Microsoft co-founder billionare Paul Allen.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 23 January 2006 04:59 (nineteen years ago)

and teh Seattle area has never won a pro sports championship, right?

Seabags - no; Mariners - no; ...unless there is some mid-70s Sonics championship I'm totally forgetting about, that is a hell of a lot of futility.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:11 (nineteen years ago)

Sonics won it in 77 or 78 with Jack Sikma.

Cowher never has gotten much grief for the Steelers coming close and failing as much as some other coaches. I supposed his chin and having the shield of blame Kordell for a big part of those losses has probably saved him some of the slagging he might get. If they blow this SB, that will probably change.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 23 January 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

Did you guys catch the FOX pregame show, when Terry Bradshaw congratulated the Steelers and said "these teams [motioning over his shoulder to the field behind him] certainly don't have a chance against them"?

Sure, he was the Steelers' QB and is expected to root for them, but he essentially told his viewership to not bother watching the game because it wasn't important! (I kinda wish I had taken his advice)

I take the Seahawks, and WE"RE GONNA SCORE! My line: 31-28, in a Super Bowl that they'll be talking about for Years To Come.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Seahawks' only answer to Steelers' 3-4 (cf. Alexanders' sad 60 yards against the cowboys' similar scheme) is to rely on tricky shit like the screens to the fullback and the Arms of Jurevicius, which are fabled to reach higher into the sky than any other arms save those belonging to Roethlisbertor himself. Lavender Hasselbex will have to bring his Redskins performance and then some to make anything happen before Porter touches him.
OTOSOTB, Seahawks' D won't have their vaunted 12th Mang in the stands like they've been used to, but I don't currently believe that the Steelers' recently unveiled 83rd airborne is going to be able to do much better than other passing offenses have produced against them in the postseason. Too dangerous, too, I mean did you see what they did to Manning? To Delhomme? The dark blue jersey REFLECTS LASERS.

I say Steelers by 3 on the back of the Bus, who will be beamed into heaven at the end of the game after gaining 63 YAC on a single series to put them into field goal range within the last minutes. Why Cowher chooses to call so many consecutive run plays after the two minute warning deep in his own territory I can't say, but it will happen. Everybody will cry, the world will do that thing that it does in the Universal Films logo screeners, and all football games afterwards will be a shadow of this one. Palomalu will cut his hair and donate the strands to NASA, who will use them to power a rocket that only takes 4 hours to get to Mars and flies with more instinct than any other rocket ever seen.

Anyway as cheesy and care-bears as it sounds I just hope the game goes on without any serious injuries like the Steelers & Seahawks have been producing so far in the post, because that would fucking blow ass and not entertain me at all.

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

Lavender Hasselbex! He should start wearing the Snickers helmet on his head, cos the hats aren't tricking anyone either.

Steelers by quite a bit because the Steelers, contrary to myth, are not the Redskins.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Everything I have amassed is riding on PITT. Daddy needs a new fathead.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

The Steelers are not the Redskins but the more I have to watch the footage of the Seahawks the more I worry about yum-yum turnover, turnover tuna. Which we will probably see a lot of on both sides if the lead-up is any indicator at all.

Actually yeah that's why Cowher is going to call all those run plays in the second half. Both teams will get passes picked off thrice each in the first half and decide to just stay on the ground for the rest of the game.

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

I really don't think the lead-up is that much of an indicator in this case. Even the ChokesColts coulda beat the Giants. I think what it comes down to is pretty simple. Alexander has proven beatable by similar defenses to the Steelers (alternately, the Steelers' D have been proven basically unbeatable of late), so if they can get to Hasselbeck the game is basically over.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

just because a defense is similar does not mean it's equivalent

also I'm only taking the seattles because a) everyone else here is taking the pittsburghs and b) no one in the pacific northwest has won shit for centuries in any sport so yay rain

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah but that's so BORING.

OK I'll be honest my ideal game would be 56-52 with 50% of all those points coming from defense and special teams. That's what I'm hoping for every time I sit in front of a teevee. Or else news that I have won seventy million dollars. It's about me and my entertainment, people, if Roffles + Bus run the train on Seattle I'm just going to lose focus.

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

OK I'll be honest my ideal game would be 56-52 with 50% of all those points coming from defense and special teams. That's what I'm hoping for every time I sit in front of a teevee.

TOM, OTM. I have liked the interviews I've seen with Seattle's defense, they're not all "THEY ALL HATE US / SHOCK THE WORLD", they're more like "it's all good". My prediction is that that Joey Porter angry fire burns off a little in a two-week media blitz, but that the mellow Shaggy-like stoners with bird hats come through once again.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yes the Joey Porter WE SHOCKED THE WORLD clip is getting extremely old. THE 15-1 TEAM FROM LAST YEAR IS BACK IN THE PLAYOFFS AND PLAYING WELL NOW THEIR QB IS HEALTHY SHOCKAH.

And you're right, similar does not mean equivalent. The Steelers D is about 73,000x better than the Dallas D.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

I guess the thing is, the Joey Porter scene is not really representative of the Steelers as a whole, who are basically equally zen about this whole thing to the Seahawks.

What no one here is liking to point out for some reason is that the Steelers have been winning in the post-season because their OFFENSE has performed far better than anyone expected. Not many people seemed remotely prepared for Rofflesberger to come out slinging.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

Ally: And what I'm pointing out is that no one thinks that the Seattle DEFENSE is anything at all, when in fact it's a pretty damn good unit. So same as you, but with different predictions because you're going with what everyone else is saying and I AM BOLD AND INDIE WITH MY PREDICTION because if I pick Steelers I can only tie blount and stormy for predictions lead so eff that, better to go with the ILNFL longshot and risk suffering mightily. But my boy Hasselbeck better not throw near Polamalu or he's gonna get a screwdriver in his peehole.

Mooks: you are Jon Williams and I claim my GLAAD award. Also, Holmgren is ace because his wife and daughter are missing the game to do humanitarian work in the Congo, while Cowher has actually killed and eaten his family, and he'll do it again, and that is nasty.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

Well I understand picking the Seahawks for the hell of it, not going to gain anything in a betting pool by everyone pickin the same teams.

Anyway, let's just agree that the entirety of the Seattle organization behaves like outright raging homosexuals, with every single thing they do, from getting dressed in the morning to applauding to throwing challenges to hoisting trophies. They are the complete opposite of the Steelers, who all probably smell very bad and eat live animals with their bare hands for a lot of fun. And that Shaun Alexander is the result of a Barber bros cloning experiment, and Holmgren is a walrus which's tusks have been cut off.

I'd say the Seahawks are in touch enough with their manhood to not have to worry about how people named "mookieproof" and "Allyzay Rofflesberger" talk shit about how they clap. Steelers are overcompensating macho types, so they are automatically Brokeback Mountaineers.

Plus, between Polumalu's hair and Cowher's clonestache, there's enough ambiguity there. As long as we're going there. Which I guess we are. How are we going there? BY CLIMBING ABOARD A MAN IN YELLOW PANTS CALLED .

That is clearly a deleted scene from "The Birdcage".

god why don't these teams just put on the old Tampa Bay uniforms already and just nancy it up completely. Bill O'Reilly is RIGHT, gay cowboys and gay marriage makes everyone gay.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Hey folks, Harry here!!!!

http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/Movies/9911/18/web.secrets/knowles.jpg

I really dunno who to root for this year? The idea of Pittsburgh winning another SB basically makes me want to pee out my butt for the rest of my life, but they are also the most reasonable and lovable team in the entire league. As much as I'd like for a marginal fagdog franchise like the Sea Hawks (the most undignified bird in the world btw - like the foul SHRIKE, they kill without honor!!!) to finally win something, the team itself is basically a band of unconscionable trollops.

butts lmao (Adrian Langston), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

i hate that fucking guy

gear (gear), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

I also find it harder and harder to believe that the Pittsburgh D is just gonna piss all over Seattle like a pregnancy test, those ain't some sweet-ass niggaz on that O-line!!!

butts lmao (Adrian Langston), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the Pittsburgh d is going to just piss all over Seattle, only that they stand a v. good chance of stopping Alexander and if they can do that it's half teh battle. I'm more a believer that their offense can run the table.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

I know the PBO has shocked the world in the postseason on the road, but people were pretty impressed with a lot of the offenses Seattle has faced and no bananas for them. I don't know what that means. Carolina was basically shut out and got away with a block in the back to give them a TD. Not that I don't think Smith could have made it all the way regardless, but still. Good D. Better than Strahan + Umenyiora gave us. Better than the Colts showed and the Colts almost won!

BOLD CLAM: This game will be won by whomever has the least turnovers.

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yes but the Colts wouldn't have almost won had the officials not intervened. Pick yr battles, yah. Also: Washington, again. If you can name me the "impressive offenses" besides Carolina you win a blow job. Hint: they only played 2 playoff games, so I'm assuming you are referring to regular season? Plz stop taking everything Lincoln Kennedy says so seriously. Just 2 weeks ago he was claiming Tom Brady was going to rape the table or something like that (paraphrase).

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

i just looked at seattle's full season schedule in an attempt to win a blow job, but no dice

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 27 January 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

I guess what I'm saying is that if yr def of high octane offenses is late season G-men, who were racing on Tiki's jock, and Washington who were sketchy all year, I dunno what to tell you other than, no blow jobs??? Confusing point but you see where I'm going.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

caveat this is in no way denigrating Seattle as a team they are an excellent team blah blah blah I'm just saying I think that Pittsburgh's road was more difficult and they've shown me a lot more than the Seahawks have. I doubted the Steelers too!

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 27 January 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

John Gruden is the carpenter.
No blowjobs makes me want to rape the table.
I'm considering voting seahawks solely to duck the majority.
Must think on this.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 27 January 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Lincoln Kennedy is seriously a premium dude, though. I love watching the kernels of wisdom spew forth from his rotund profile. In fact, why is it that all the analysts and shit on NFL Network - Terrell Davis, LK, Rod Woodson, Emmitt, Rich Eisen, a bunch of other dudes I guess - are lightyears ahead of anyone who isn't Michael Irvin, in terms of personality, entertainment and even insight? Can anyone even sit through those Fox or CBS pregames without wanting to ralph on their cats?

butts lmao (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 28 January 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

OTM x100, the NFL Network people are all great dudes and my seeming dismissal of Mr. Kennedy had little to do with his insight or analysis, and more to do with Tom's rather intriguing amount of trust in those dudes, even Adam Schefter.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 30 January 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

also I read that last line as "wanting to rape their cats" and was a little worried.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 30 January 2006 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

Getting a little football fix in while eating my lunch, I watched an NFL Films thing about "THE DRIVE" led by Elway and the Broncs against the Browns in the AFC championship game. Lots of good names and players come up in that game: Ozzie Newsome, Tom Jackson, Rich Karlis (barefoot kicker for Denver), Clay Matthews, Bernie Kosar, Pat Bowlen (nice fur coat buddy), Gary Kubiak, Dan Reeves and you see Bill Cowher all over the place on the sidelines as an assitant coach for the Browns.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 30 January 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

In my heart, I'm hoping for Pittsburgh.
For the sake of this thread and solely to play dice with the universe, I'm picking Seattle by 10

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 January 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks Earl. :-(

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

I was annoyed at NFL Network last night cos we tuned in for their Super Bowl marathon and they were only playing CRAP Super Bowls. Like Bills v Cowboys (narratted by Jimmy Johnson, puhleeeeeze) or any of the 80s Broncos bowls. They seemed to be going in chronological order but WILLFULLY skipping any of them that had even the barest excitement to them. PS Niners are douchebags for running up the score like that on Denver, come on. But yeah I had to turn that shit off after a while, too annoying and depressing.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

I just read where the NFL network will be carrying regular season games this year (Thurs & Saturdays). Should I skip the the fathead and purchase cable?

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

oh wow that'd be awesome!! I wonder who will be the commentary team?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 30 January 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

LK: They're doing 8 reg. season games; mostly Sat and Thurs games that ESPN likely would've put up.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 January 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Eisen & Schefter!

"Wow I have no idea what they just did. What is that? A screen pass?"
"Well whatever it was Rich it was called by offensive coordinator blah blah blah who was one of the candidates interviewed by Houston to replace Dom Capers."
"That's great, what they're doing. Wow, those guys are so big! And fast!"
"Hey Rich didn't you wear that tie during last night's NFL Total Access?"
"Why yes I did Adam I realized I forgot to pack two ties so I figured while we're up in the booth I'd try to re-use this one, if you will?"
"Ha ha ha"
"Oh they're running around again!"
"Number 58 is going into free agency at the end of this season - it'll be interesting to see what kind of numbers he can put up - that's big money on the line."

TOMBOT, Monday, 30 January 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'll only watch THAT if they have Davis and Woodson as sideline reporters, and they each have to wear the opposite-team-to-what-they-are-interivewing's game jerseys.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

No no no no no Davis & Woodson wearing Bonnie Bernstein outfits.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

None of these women are as awful as Jillian Barbierie, even if they do wear stupid hats. Maybe we should request NFL Network dresses up Rod Woodson in a Jillian Barbierie outfit.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone catch Pam O. in that ginormous hat with the flaps a couple weeks ago? goodness

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

It's like they think they're at the Kentucky Derby for crying out loud.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Lol yeah, I was kind of stoked all week about the Super Bowl marathon, but when I turned it on yesterday and saw what they were actually showing I just got bummed and watched some Kurt Russell films instead.

Is NFL network like HOLDING BACK ON PURPOSE good Super Bowls? 4 what purpose? Is there a big thing planned that I'm just not "getting"? Or is it just to annoy everyone? I mean seriously who the hell wants to rewatch Mark Rypien doing anything? I mean, Mark who? Super Bowl MVP blah blah blah...who??? It was kind of comforting to realize that Joey Montana was always completely glazed looking though, made me feel a little better, like he wasn't thoroughly brain damaged by the NFL, but was rather born that way.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

There should be a sci-fi show on the NFL network where they implant a personality chip into Montana's brain and record the results.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 30 January 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I got a lot more enjoyment out of the hour and a half "NFL's Greatest Games" on ESPN Classic. Is it just me or is there something fundamentally depressing about crummy Superbowls, like Yes These Guys Won It All But Now Nobody Remembers Them (Lol)?

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Monday, 30 January 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. Tho I guess it says something important about, I dunno, the world or something that more people probably know who Scott Norwood was than have the foggiest who the fuck Mark Rypien is. I mean I forgot who the hell he was until last night.
