QB rating of 116 in game 1.

"hey Palmer and Leinart, who's the fuckin daddy now, bitches?"

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

In agreeance about renaming the thread!

This weekend was my first weekend watching the NFL on my new HDTV and man oh man what a wonderful thing that was.

Brady tore ACL and MCL

The typical course of action for such an injury is to wait 4-6 weeks for the MCL tear to heal, then reconstruct the ACL. Brady will likely undergo surgery in approximately one month and face 6-9 months of recovery and rehabilitation, barring any complications.

could've been a lot worse

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it could've been Brett Favre.

According to a lot of people, Young doesn’t handle criticism well. Rumor has it that Norm Chow, a guy allegedly known for being blunt, considered Young practically uncoachable. What made it worse, Chow was not shy about saying so to management. What ever the truth maybe, Young really hasn’t made much, if any progression since his rookie year. If rickety old Kerry Collins can still play even a little bit, Tennessee has a full blown quarterback controversy on their hands.

It does seem like the alleged suicide attempt was way overblown though.

bnw, Thursday, 11 September 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

Remember all the hubbub about that bad wonderlic score Vince Young had during the combine? A BUNCH of football pundits were laughing that one off, especially after Young's first season success. I'm sure there are quite a few who are saying "I told you so". I hate to see it happen, as that performance that Young did at Texas against USC was a freaking wonder. Then again a new NFL meme seems to be that pretty much none of the newer QBs are worth a crap if they have to take the snap under center, as they spent so much time playing in the shotgun in college.

I have to say that the Bears did come out and open a can of whoop ass on the Colts. They came out and played them up tough. It is probably more a question of timing, as the Colts came in with Manning and their O-Line in synch, but still considering how bad the Bears looked in preseason, impressive none the less. Forte had a nice game, the guy has some acceleration in the hole. The Bears seem to be an every other year good team, so this is probably their good year. I hope that they can keep Mike Brown healthy, as that guy is a dude.

The Bengals looked pretty bad. They still cannot stop the run and this was not against a Ravens squad with Jamal Lewis in his prime. The Bengals o-line played horrible and Palmer got tagged pretty much every time he stepped back into the pocket. I hate to say it, but I think Carson Palmer is looking more and more like a guy who could be king stuck in the basement office. Not good.

"I like to think the last thing that went through Mr. Snrub's head, other than that bullet, was to wonder why in the hell the Browns chose to kick a field goal on 4th and 3 from the Cowboys' 17 when they were down 28-7 in the fourth quarter."

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 11 September 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

You know who looked really good? Eddie Royal.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 11 September 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

i feel for vince, i really do. this whole thing reminded me of a slate article from a few weeks back, a review of HARD KNOCKS written by the reporter dude who did that new book about being a fake kicker on the Broncos for a season... he really hated how the TE coach harangued Martellus Bennett, writing that Bennett probably was hurting inside from all the criticism. i didnt think much of it at the time, but now it is a thing that makes u say 'hmmm'~~

cankles, Thursday, 11 September 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i feel for him, too. whenever i argue to friends that booing is probably really detrimental to your own team i always get shot down and laughed at but this is obv what can happen. lucky for him, assuming he doesn't quit the game, i'm sure most of the titans fans will embrace him now that this has come out and hopefully it will blow over. it would be weird though if he was just one of those dudes who never panned out.

polyphonic, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

I just have a hard time sympathizing for a guy like Vince Young, who doesn't appear to have put much work into getting better at his job. He wasn't given a bunch of great receivers to work with, but would he even have seen them if he did? It looked to me like he was pulling the ball down to start running as soon as he noticed that his first option was covered. Norm Chow said the guy was uncoachable, and it got him fired. I think Norm Chow deserves a job more than Vince Young, maybe that's just me.

polyphonic, Thursday, 11 September 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

Jeff Garcia to New England?

"A league source tells us that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to trade quarterback Jeff Garcia. Per the source, the Bucs are willing to take anything they can get for Garcia, who's in the final season of a two-year contract. The problem is the relationship between Garcia and coach Jon Gruden. They're "ready to kill each other," the source said.

polyphonic, Thursday, 11 September 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

the pats are not going to pick up another qb. they'll sink or swim with cassel/kevin o'connell/matt gutierrez (who was signed to the practice squad this week after outplaying cassel the entire pre-season).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 11 September 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

Jon Gruden and a player not speaking, where have we heard that one before. It's a good thing Rocket Farve didn't go to Tampa.

I found this, it's some of Norm Chow's old passing plays from BYU.

leavethecapital, Thursday, 11 September 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

I think a big part of Vince Young's problem is that he probably was on cruise control and football was easy up until he got to the NFL and that combined with the stresses of just growing up is too much. Some guys get to this point and they double down on the work involved and some others freak out (say hello Ryan Leaf). I don't really feel for him as the NFL is filled with dudes who work their ass off to get what they can out of the league and really nothing is guaranteed. Other than the changing offensive coordinators, the guy didn't exactly go to the NY pressure cooker or a club that is totally in the NFL outhouse like the Cardinals. You have to have talent and then you have to make it work, but a big thing in the NFL is getting drafted into the right situation, which completely screws a whole lot of players, probably more so in the NFL than any other pro sport.

Indy could struggle again against Minnesota but I mean I have to think Peyton is going to right the ship soon. They clearly looked out of sorts in the opener but the rest of the league can't bank on Peyton playing that way all year unless he's really more hurt than he is leading on.

Besides, it isn't like Travaris Jackson is Joe Montana. He had some nice moments last week coupled with moments of fleeting stupidity.

Officer, I Just Shot Seven People (Bo Jackson Overdrive), Friday, 12 September 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

PIT @ CLE -- Steelers. I am sorry, brownie!

CHI @ CAR -- i believe in Jake.
TEN @ CIN -- Titans won't miss tiny tears QB. Palmer on the slide now. another low-scorer for Cincy.
GB @ DET -- Rodgers will benefit from Lions having no run D at all.
BUF @ JAC -- JAX to edge this unconvincingly
OAK @ KC -- it's a travesty that one of these teams will come out of this game with a 1-1 record.
IND @ MIN -- i think the Vikes were unlucky against GB, and Indy look like they have some problems.
NYG @ STL -- do STL have DBs who can catch? if so this might be a long night for Eli based on his throws vs Washington. Rams still utter dump tho.
NO @ WAS -- 'Skins have to be much better than they showed vs NYG, but that would still leave them terrible. hard to back Saints on the road, but i can't deny the evidence of my eyes.
SF @ SEA -- this might finish 0-0.
ATL @ TB -- Tampa field that guy with the beret from Mythbusters at LB to expose Turner as a sham RB.
MIA @ ARI -- i have an inkling that this is going to be a brutal beating.
SD @ DEN -- i'm not ready to jump on the Broncos bandwagon on the back of a win vs Oakland. SD look shaky tho.
NE @ NYJ -- uncomfortable win for NE
PIT @ CLE -- this is a bad time for this game to come up for the Browns. ship needs steadying and Steelers won't give them that opportunity. second thumping of the season administered by P'burgh.
PHI @ DAL -- GOTW. Iggles D might win this for them but just seems a little too far of a stretch.
BAL @HOU -- PREDICTION: Texans will get a total of 8 yards rushing in this game.

that's way too many road wins. this is going to be a poor week for me on pick 'em.

David R., Friday, 12 September 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

Belichick's strategy to combat losing Brady is to fuck up every other starting QB in the league, so don't expect Favre to still be on the field after the first quarter. he may not even make it to the stadium.

and pillows of conventional wisdom

brownie, Friday, 12 September 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

reasons i am worried about Cleveland against Pittsburgh:

1. Anderson vs Cowboys - 45% completion
2. Edwards vs Cowboys - 14 yards
3. after one snap i saw Romo make a sandwich while he was waiting for the pass rush to get to him. i think - i may be misremembering - but i think he had a glass of milk, too.

Parenthetically Yours (Roberto Spiralli), Friday, 12 September 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

Pass rush is only a concern if you think the idea is to actually reach the QB. It isn't, keeping a QB isolated from society while he is in the pocket will begin to prey on his mind. This is the game within the game, the one that doesn't show on the sack or "hurried" stats.

Crennel knows this. Everyone fears it.

polyphonic, Saturday, 13 September 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

CHI @ CAR -- Both teams were surprisingly good last week. Carolina and the Ravens have probably screwed me the most on picks in the last couple of years, so I will go Bears and watch Carolina give it to me again.
TEN @ CIN -- I'm going with the Titans on the defense alone. I sure hope the Bengals are not as bad as last week, but they probably are worse.
GB @ DET -- I got a feeling this one will be closer than you might think, but not enough to pick the Lions, so GB it is.
BUF @ JAC -- Buffalo seemed to play great and the Jags pretty meh, but I'm going with Jacksonville at home. I'd be cool with Buffalo having a break out season.
OAK @ KC -- Classic rivalry that has descended into a nothing game, I will take KC at home.
IND @ MIN -- The Colts defense didn't look that bad last week, but Minnesota's ground game could keep Manning off the field. Unless the Indy offense gives away another 9 points, I can't see the Vikings so I will take the Colts.
NYG @ STL -- Giants, but I have a feeling the Rams could bounce back and surprise to make it interesting.
NO @ WAS -- Saints. Don't know much about Washington, but going by listening to the Giant game on the radio, Jim Zorn's play calling and how they handled the clock was really wacky. The Saints offense looks pretty high gain with a bunch of tools. I think they can weather Colston being out.
SF @ SEA -- Seahawks. I guess Hassleback got rocked in that first game and their O-line is really bad. I could see SF being improved, but Seattle is a tough place to win.
ATL @ TB -- Tampa. I kind of would like to see Atlanta win, as Chucky is just dumb enough to create his own QB controversy. Anyone who watched the Bears last year knows Brian Griese is no answer for anything. Was Garcia really the problem last week? I don't buy it, but I still cannot take a rebuilding Falcons team on the road.
MIA @ ARI -- Cardinals. No good reason really to take Arizona other than they are at home, but really is the case every week. I could see Miami winning, as they could control the ball.
SD @ DEN -- Broncos. I think Cutler is going to be a breakout player this year.
NE @ NYJ -- Pats. I've got a feeling that Cassel will to do OK, criminy they got a running game, they just didn't need to use in with the bombs away last year and I think it kind of caught up to them. Run the rock and try to throw deep to Moss. I've got a feeling those crazy linebacker schemes that the Pats run will easily get Favre to turn the ball over a couple of times.
PIT @ CLE -- Steelers. I don't think the Browns are ready for prime time. Be wary Cleveland of starting a QB controversy, which I think is starting to bubble under the surface.
PHI @ DAL -- Eagles. I think the Eagles were a team a bit better than their record last year and I just fxxxing hate the Cowboys since Jerry Jones has owned the club, so I hope Philly beats their ass.
BAL @ HOU -- Ravens. Their D looked really good last week and Houston got demolished. I could see this one being a pretty fugly game and if the Ravens turn the ball over, Houston will win.

earlnash, Saturday, 13 September 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

CHI @ CAR -- CAR. I want to see Forte and Orton play well again before I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Carolina has a lot of good players, and seem like a different team with Delhomme back.
TEN @ CIN -- TEN. Cincy seems like a mess, but very tempted to pick them here. Don't trust Kerry Collins at all. But their defense is too good, and the running game is going to be tough.
GB @ DET -- GB, of course.
BUF @ JAC -- JAC, because I'm not ready to pick Edwards to win a tough game on the road.
OAK @ KC -- KC, of course. (KC won't get a lot of "Of course"s this year.)
IND @ MIN -- IND. I mean, it's in a dome. It's like a home game for the Colts.
NYG @ STL -- NYG.
NO @ WAS -- WASH, upset special! Washington is a lot better than they showed last week, and they had extra time to prepare.
SF @ SEA -- SF. I thought SF looked vastly improved last week, even in losing to a mediocre Cardinals team. Seattle has no healthy offensive players.
ATL @ TB -- Falcons if Griese is starting.
MIA @ ARI -- ARI. Miami isn't there yet.
SD @ DEN -- SD, but I'm scared shitless.
NE @ NYJ -- NYJ.
PIT @ CLE -- PIT
PHI @ DAL -- DAL
BAL @ HOU -- I predict it will be postponed or canceled (since neither team will make the playoffs).

anybody who criticizes my predictions, just remember what happened to the last person who criticized me saying the Giants wouldn't get blown out before the last Super Bowl!

CHI @ CAR -- Chicago, if their defense plays at the same level and running game is consistent
TEN @ CIN -- Cincinnati. The negative focus of the Vince Young ordeal will have the team out of focus, not to mention look who's playing QB (Kerry Collins? Lol)
GB @ DET -- Green Bay, seconded
BUF @ JAC -- Jacksonville has too much talent to be 0-2, and Buffalo is a mirage.
OAK @ KC -- Oakland in stunning upset special. Damon Huard=crap and will not repeat his 2006 relief effort.
IND @ MIN -- Indianapolis is too good to start 0-2. They were out of sorts in the first game, and well Travaris Jackson can't pass when out of the pocket, which he tends to leave a lot.
NYG @ STL -- Hell, even the groundskeepers could beat STL
NO @ WAS -- Saints. Washington looks like their offense will be quite vanilla until Week 4.
SF @ SEA -- Seahawks. Home field, embarassed by loss last week.
ATL @ TB -- Bucs. Matt Ryan will come down from his high after week 1 and struggle. Bucs will eke out an ugly win.
MIA @ ARI -- Miami, based on nothing else than I'm a Dolphins fan and can't deal with another year like last year. the last victory I actually saw live was in November of 06 since I saw their Patriots victory on tape in Dec 06, and didn't see the Ravens game last year.
SD @ DEN -- Denver. I really think this will be a good year for Cutler.
NE @ NYJ -- Jets. Although this is the worst game of the week. Win, and New England is "just fine" without Brady. If the Jets win, the Jets are suddenly the "team to beat" in the AFC, which is also rubbish. Kill me, please.
PIT @ CLE -- Gotta say Steelers as well. Cleveland's last season was a one-off.
PHI @ DAL -- In a high scoring effort, Romo and company win on their home field.
BAL @ HOU -- Not happening.

I have a hat made entirely of boneless chicken wings and will proudly eat it if something out of the blue happens.
