holy shit! i am really excited over this news, for some reason. the thing is tho, the ford family's a big part of the problem. they just dont give a fuck about the team and tend to half-ass everything when it comes to the organization - it's not like they're stingy or anything, it comes down to stuff like front office ppl not getting callbacks (from the owners) for a week plus when they have urgent football/operational matters that need their input. but hey, it's still a big move.

ATL @ CAR Carolina maybe would've been better off without Steve Smith coming back? can get over-reliant on a guy.
CLE @ CIN at least Ohio can't go 0-8
HOU @ JAC Jags on the way back i think, although Texans will make a game of it. low-scorer
DEN @ KC will be a shoot out, KC may well stay competitive longer than expected
SF @ NO it seems ludicrous to suggest, but form says niners
ARI @ NYJ depends who makes their throws. edge to Jets but i think Mangina isn't long for this league.
GB @ TB have feeling Tampa D will show up big for this one
MIN @ TEN depends how well Nashville run vs Vikes. this one is straight down the middle
SD @ OAK Oakland best hope is Rivers getting cocky and throwing picks
BUF @ STL Missouri will go 0-8, however. great game for wheels to come off for Bills tho *fingers crossed*
WAS @ DAL good game to show if Week 1 Campbell or week 2 and 3 Campbell was the real guy
PHI @ CHI Eagles don't need Westbrook to win this if Bears suddenly can't stop the pass
BAL @ PIT if Ravens D can get Big Ben scared early they could score enough to win even without O production

ATL @ CAR Panthers- This might be an interesting game.
CLE @ CIN Bengals - I don't think the Browns will get the pass rush and I think Cinci will put up big numbers.
HOU @ JAC JAGS - Houston is not showing up and slow start J-ville is still pretty good.
DEN @ KC Broncos - I think Denver is for real, but KC might show a bit more this week so I could see them surprising.
SF @ NO Saints - This should be a decent game, but if NO gets up two scores, it is done.
ARI @ NYJ Jets - Arizona does not win much on the road.
GB @ TB Packers - This week I have to be right on Tampa having some humble pie.
MIN @ TEN Titans - Might be a good game, but I like the Titans.
SD @ OAK Chargers - Lane Kiffin's last game, but it would be funny if they won and they still fired him.
BUF @ STL Bills - Trent Green? He was as IU when I want to IU, so he is old to be QB. I just hope the old boy doesn't get another concussion.
WAS @ DAL Cowboys - God I hate both clubs now...maybe the earth will just open up and swallow them.
PHI @ CHI Eagles - The Bears offense kind of stinks and I could see the Eagles running the ball too.
BAL @ PIT Ravens - Without Rofflesberger or Parker, they are not going to score many points.

earlnash, Thursday, 25 September 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

I root for who I've got on my ff team, who isn't beating the spread, and whatever team doesn't have a Manning on it.

Most Arkansas folk pull for Dallas since Jerry Jones is from North Little Rock and Felix Jones played for the Razorbacks and it's the nearest team to most of the state. I do have more of an affinity for the Chiefs since I went to school in Missouri, but lately, watching them play is about as fun as looking for arrowheads in the woods. Time consuming, pointless, and bound to get you lost and asking directions from a tweaker.

I am always rooting for someone, and it usually just seems to happen organically. Like, I don't know who I want to win until I find myself going YEAHHHHHHHH unexpectedly.

polyphonic, Friday, 26 September 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

I think at this point I would root for the Pats over Dallas or Denver or the Colts without any remorse.

I would root for the Colts to beat Denver, Dallas to beat the Colts, and Dallas to beat Denver.

I would root for Atlanta, Cleveland, Buffalo, or the Gigantes over all of the above.

and i'm not sure who's worse, dc-area fans or boston-area fans

mookieproof, Friday, 26 September 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

It's the owner Snyder I hate, he seems like a scuz bag. I liked the old Hogs teams, they were real fun to watch. Their fans are cool, I just cannot cheer for them anymore.

I was a Cowboy over the Steelers guy when I was a little kid in the 70s, which was one of the major things you had to choose in life back then. Jerry Jones is pretty scummy, it started off how he handled the change over with Tex Schramm and Tom Landry. Not much class in the start and then the team pretty much seemed to revel in bringing in any nasty character as long as he could get the job done, which by association kind of scummed up my outlook of pretty respectable players like Smith, Aikman, Woodson and some of the others. There is a smug stench of shit every time I see Jerry Jones that is a reflection of what I think is wrong with America.

I'll hate the 49ers forever for beating the Bengals twice in a Superbowl. (Although the Bengals did cover the spread in both games.) They were just almost too good, which is probably half the reason I like the Hogs as they beat them sometimes.

I didn't really hate the Pats until it looked like the Colts would never beat them and they were getting rated like the best thing since sliced bread. I'm kind of over it as the Colts did beat them and got it done once, so the angst isn't quite there anymore. Besides that, it seems like the Colts are kind of hatable in a similar way, as I see their hats and shirts on all sorts of people I know don't know any players like Gary Hogeboom, Bill Brooks or Barry Krauss. Man, I would have liked to see Billy Brooks get a chance to play with Peyton Manning. He was a good player on some cruddy teams with some even cruddier QBs. As for the Pats, I got kind of a grudging respect which kind of came up again this week when Troy Brown retired, as that is a dude if he was on your team, you would cheer for him big time.

There was many opportunities over the years, but I am glad I never got any Steelers band wagons.

Other teams love and hate comes and goes, but for me these are probably the current standards.

A sad thing that never seemed to happen was that that high powered Rams team NEVER played the Colts when they were the other hot offense in the NFL. That is a big scoring game that the schedule makers at the NFL never put together and we will have to wonder what a track meet that would have been. That being said, Kurt Warner used to come of a bit like a choad in their zenith and it used to kind of bug me how Faulk got so much huzzas, I would have loved to see the Colts beat them in a shootout. It never happened, but man that could have been a killer game to see Manning vs. Warner and Edge vs. Faulk and Harrison vs. Holt/Bruce with no real defense to stop either one. :(

i was born and grew up in pittsburgh, so there you go. also i think the rooneys and the steelers' three (!) head coaches during my lifetime (i just turned 37) have been fairly classy.

i'm supposed to hate the browns, but i just don't. for one thing, they haven't really been much good. love the helmets. i'd root for them over most teams.

bengals, ehh. i kinda liked sam wyche and boomer. apparently now they're a bunch of convicts or something. can we blame marge schott?

ravens i hate for leaving cleveland. and ray lewis, due to the general espn worship of him. i might have trouble maintaining my hatred in the absence of billick, though.

other places i have lived:

panthers: whatevs, dudes. charlotte is a joke anyway.

vikings: got nothing against them, though i suppose i'd rather support the wacky populism of the packers. les steckel was not good (<--old). never liked randall. AP is awesome.

dc: fuck the redskins and everything about them apart from portis and maybe chris cooley. a reprehensible owner, nickname, business plan, etc. fans (except for daria) are the absolute worst (see also capitals hockey and maryland basketball). fuck wilbon and especially kornheiser too.

nyc: who cares about the jets? broadway joe was from western pa, but i don't care. i like laveranues. mangini seems like a prick. and the whole gate d (or is it b) rapist convention is pretty offputting.

g-men: weird -- i don't like plaxico, or coughlin, or even eli especially (after his refusal to play for the chargers). tiki was a cancer. shockey was an overrated psycho. but i kind of like them, despite their nightmarishly bad road uniforms

mookieproof, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

hey guys ignorance time: what is it means when offensive lineman "get hats" on defensive players?

TOMBOT, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

"blocks on a running play"

surely no one in the nfl is guilty of spearing

mookieproof, Friday, 26 September 2008 03:54 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - thx mookie - skins fan here since about 6th grade. I was SO HYPED when they beat denver in the super bowl
<3 <3 <3 art monk, darrell green, charles mann

became a pats fan when i lived in RI. the winter suuuuuucked & watching them win playoff games was the only good thing going

regular guy, scranton, pennsylvania (daria-g), Friday, 26 September 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

dan snyder is awful. OTM on that. jack kent cooke was no prize either but actually had a winning team

in my very limited experience the fans @ fedex are total dickheads. i told off a bunch of drunk fratboys who kept spilling beer on me & first they called me a bitch, then decided i was "feisty" which pissed me off more. but all NFL stadiums are full of those kind of people right? if i go to another game i will probably get in a fight (which i would lose)

regular guy, scranton, pennsylvania (daria-g), Friday, 26 September 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

true - art monk, charles mann and especially darrell green were awesome. i liked riggo too (<-old). but between snyder and the wdc sports media establishment i must hate them.

actually i was also SO HYPED when they beat denver cause my freshman college roommate was both a dick and a broncos fan

mookieproof, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

i've only been to two nfl games: stillers vs cleveland in 1989 and g-men vs. skins in 2007. the steelers have been sold out since i was born.

in both cases it was a) pretty boring (tv timeouts every five seconds, can't really see much), and b) uncomfortable to be around so many drunk assholes. and i like drinking. i'm drunk right now.

i would like to state for the record that i have no problem going to the gay bar, if just because one of the yelp reviews was from some terrible looking lady who disliked the place because the clientele bore no resemblance to the "rest of the neighborhood". it's like OMG a bar that isn't full of babies (literal babies, not brett favre style babies) and park slope idiots, you are the place for me. i think i would rather go back to the bar we went to in chelsea with michael white where a drag queen was doing bingo and they were showing xanadu on the screens, because seriously this weekend of football? it is bringing more shame to our nation than sarah palin and the mortgage industry combined.

The Raiders just went for a 76-yard field goal.

Needless to say, it was about 16 yards short.

Whatever he's doing, it's working.

Too bad they basically threw away an opportunity at the end of the half by letting the clock run down and showing no urgency whatsoever.

Anquan Boldin isn't dead, phew.

4)McNabb!!!
5)crazy, crazy games keep happening.

guys did the raiders actually try a 76-yard field goal?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

yeah it was w/1 second left in the half, INTO THE WIND - it was abt 10 yards short. if it was in a dome i bet janikowski's the dude who could've pulled it off tho.

cankles, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

why yes. yes they did

http://www.faniq.com/blog/Video-Sebastian-Janikowski-Attempts-76Yard-Field-Goal-Blog-12235

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Oakland - 0:59
1st-10, OAK34 0:59 OAK committed 10 yard penalty
1st-20, OAK24 0:54 M. Bush rushed to the right for 12 yard gain
2nd-8, OAK36 0:36 J. Russell passed to M. Bush down the middle for 6 yard gain
3rd-2, OAK42 0:00 S. Janikowski missed a 76-yard field goal. A. Cromartie returned field goal attempt for 26 yards

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

cromartie tried a vasher-esque return where he fakes like he's not gonna return it and then takes off, but he got tackled pretty fast

cankles, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

bless their lil hearts for that one

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

That trick worked about as well as Hester catching the ball in the end zone and just looking at the other team rushing toward him without taking a knee.

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

jim zorn is hilarious. clips from dc news last night from after the game - first he's all "wow, that was like totally awesome," thanks just about everyone in the redskins organization & comes off as completely awkward and nerdy when trying to lead cheers in the locker room

cooley blog:
Maybe Z is the pep talk expert. I mean, before the New Orleans game the topic was "be excellent." A line from George Carlin in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

regular guy, scranton, pennsylvania (daria-g), Monday, 29 September 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

The important part of that last minute for Oakland was that they kept rushing the ball and throwing short passes to the middle of the field even though they only had one time out. It was as if they weren't even trying to score. But then they brought out Janikowski and the announcers were like "uh, wtf?"

polyphonic, Monday, 29 September 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i don't know how long it will last, but zorn's press conferences are a breath of fresh air. he's definitely a little nutty and brings a sort of aw, shucks mentality that's really amusing.

j.q higgins, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

completely. troy aikman was pretty amused talking about how a couple days ago, zorn said he didn't know that much about the dallas-washington rivalry and was it kind of like seahawks vs raiders? lolz

BE EXCELLENT nfl week five

regular guy, scranton, pennsylvania (daria-g), Monday, 29 September 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

haha...and so the team wins and has them chanting hip-hip-hooray. you know he referred to the team colors as maroon, yellow and black in his hiring presser? i think he really is sort of like a walking stereotype of what east coasters think of as a west coast flakes.

j.q higgins, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

Lance Briggs nearly killed a couple of people last night, a couple of those hits were freaking evil. That goal line stand was pretty epic. The Bears are always going to be about winning ugly, but last night was fun.

T.O.'s response after the game was hilarious, the dude got the ball like 1 out of 3 plays and it still was not enough. I hope it turns into a total ego/id meltdown like what happened in Philly and Frisco. I think Jerry Jones is not the dude to cross, you know that guy has connections that can make you go sleep with the fishes. The Cowboys just need to hike the ball to T.O. and let the awesome happen. It couldn't happen to some better people.
