I like the NFC North imo.

brownie, Monday, 6 October 2008 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

nfc north is second place to me! the vikings really bring them down though with their new, terrible uniforms that look like an attempt to join the 1996 teams.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

both of the south divisions are exercises in wtf

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

i think all the divisions end up being a draw because they all have at least one team that drags the rest of the good uniforms down.

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

but yeah, i think NFC North is the least of the evils. vikings > redskins

giants' road unis are awful

oh hell why don't i just make one post about the subject:

afc east: the dolphins really bring everyone down. the bills new uniforms are so bad but when they wear the throwbacks, a++.
afc north: the bengals really, really hurt them badly. the steelers and the browns are great. the ravens are just "ok" but they are no bengals.
afc south: why is indianapolis in this division and baltimore is in the north? O_o also why is indy the only one of this division that doesn't dress like an arena football team?
afc west: the raiders really bring this up imo. the chiefs have nice costumes too. i will not dignify the chiefs by saying they wear uniforms, though.

nfc east: the best. the redskins have the most racist name of all the teams named after native americans, but the least racist logo by far out of that group. i will say, i do miss the old GIANTS helmets, and the cowboys could go back to their '90s unis and improve themselves.
nfc north: if the vikings hadn't redesigned, this would probably be the winning conference but their redesign is much worse than the cowboys.
nfc south: this entire division looks like epcot center's fire island exhibit. dnw. although i do admire how aggressively awful carolina's unis are.
nfc west: the cardinals really have the worst logo in sports imo, it is not even a very angry looking example of a bird! the seahawks wear the color of depression, fittingly but i think it contributes to a whole culture of fail. how do you not get depressed, putting that on every week?

Dolphins unis are nice!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

i'm guessing that the thought process with Miami was as follows:

1. what is the worst shade of green we can find?
2. what is the color that jars most alarmingly with that green?

presto uniform.

I love the Dolphins unis, if only because they've stubbornly stuck with a wacky color scheme and goofy mascot forever.

In general in the NFL, more color is better. This ain't baseball, you can look bright and garish in your skintight shiny football pants and big plastic helmets as long as all the design elements work. Unfortunately, for a lot of teams, they don't at all:

AFC East: Recent Bills and Pats uniforms bring down fine work from Jets and Fins.
AFC North: Ravens and Bengals bring down Browns and Steelers.
AFC South: Really no good unis; Indy is just OK.
AFC West: Nu-Broncos wreck whatever could have been good out here.

NFC East: Strong contender, not totally sure about recent Giants and Eagles but the foundation is there.
NFC North: Winner. Lions are average, everyone else in this group is top-notch.
NFC South: Whaaaaaat.
NFC West: Niners are classic but others are WTF.

they could just call that picture of Bucco Bruce a picture of Buffalo Bill Cody.

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

NFC EAST - these are all good, i particularly like skins' home uniforms. Dallas looks good even though I hate them.

NFC NORTH - bears r classic & actually one of the few teams where the dark jerseys + white pants look just as good IMHO. i hate the green bay colors but the uniform isn't bad considering. vikings worst in the division here

NFC SOUTH - Carolina nothing special. Bucs old colors were more interesting. atl/new orleans all good. saints are stylin.

NFC WEST - seahawks uniforms like their coach seem to be a copy of philadelphia only not as good. IMHO arizona could use another accent color, i do not like black and red and white together, also the mascot should be more interesting, and there aren't any cardinals in arizona are there? change it. 49ers are a classic though.

AFC EAST - I really like the bills all white uniforms w/the dark colors on the shoulders & that red helmet, it makes all the players look like they are in metroid. new england is class. I don't think Miami is that bad, it seems to suit them, I guess it's like San Fran no matter how bad they are that classic uniform reminds me of watching Joe Montana play, same for Miami w/Dan Marino. Jets are blah. Get another color.

AFC NORTH - Pittsburgh should never change, also a+++ for no logo on one side of the helmet. Bmore lettering is different than any other team in the league right? That's cool. Cleveland.. let Cleveland be Cleveland, I guess. Cincinnati has the worst uniforms in the entire league no question, take all those damn stripes off there and just leave them on the helmet.

AFC SOUTH - TN, unmemorable, Indy, blah, Jville.. whose plan was it to have two franchises w/similar colors and mascots? Carolina's logo is better looking, also teal no. Houston ugh, so generic.. blah. Oilers were so great too.

AFC WEST - San Diego makes me think of a city still stuck in the 70's much like Pittsburgh and Cleveland except that those two teams were mostly good & thinking of those cities in the 70's you still think of a tough, working class kind of city whereas San Diego you think things were just stupid. Denver bring back the old uniforms plz. Oakland A++++ rules all best ever do not change. Kansas City should change it up.

Alex: The Buccaneers' 1997 uniform change prompted a 2003 lawsuit by the Raiders, who claimed that the NFL and the Buccaneers had infringed upon key trademark elements of the Raiders' brand, including the Raiders' pirate logo. In the same suit, the Raiders challenged the Carolina Panthers' color scheme, which included silver and black. The Raiders wanted the courts to bar the Buccaneers and Panthers from wearing their uniforms while playing in California. However, since the lawsuit was filed in a state California court, the lawsuit was tossed out because only federal courts have jurisdiction on intellectual property issues.

Alex: i know!!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

NFC EAST
NY Giants: Nice at home, but I don't like the road grays much. A home, B road
Washington: If you're going to have racist uniforms, at least use some sort of folksy caricature. Good color scheme though. B
Dallas: The guy who does Uni Watch pointed out that their uniforms have a lot of cool quirks that I hadn't noticed. Total trailblazers, and simple iconography that tells you who they are and who they think they are. A+
Philadelphia: I have an affinity for any green team, but I don't like their logo much. Totally prefer the older unis, but the black highlights are nice. B

NFC NORTH
Chicago: Classic and unfuckwithable. A+
Green Bay: Awesome and instantly identifiable. A+
Minnesota: I like these a lot in theory, but always think they look a little weird. I think they could use slight tweak to the logo. Maybe steal a few ideas from the Lakers, who are very good at yellow/purple unis. B+
Detroit: Boring. See Seattle. I'd like a little more Motor in my Motor City. B-

NFC SOUTH
Carolina: Don't like em, but they've improved over the years. B-
Tampa Bay: They have a bland, modern feel that I don't like. At least their color scheme is still unique. Totally prefer the gay old ones. B-
Atlanta: Generally dislike a black/white/red scheme. Always looks a little amateurish. Vastly preferred them in their Deion Sanders eyesore days. C+
New Orleans: I wish their uniforms had more french style. The fleur de lys is a cool move, but I want to see it echoed in the uniform in some cool way. Just seems haphazard, and black/gold is another boring scheme. B-

NFC WEST
Arizona: Boring. C. There are a million teams with birds and red and black. Their stadium is an A+ though.
San Francisco: They took a classic uniform and found ways to make it more bland. B+
Seattle: Boring. B-. The color scheme is like the Fightin' Phlegm. Getting beat by the Seahawks is like the feeling of having nothing to do on an overcast weekend. Also, when you have a dumb bird on the helmet, you really should make it look as dumb as possible.
St. Louis: Boring. A lot like Seattle in the sense that you never look at them and think "uh oh, here comes some bad-asses." But you look at the teams from the '70s, and the simplicity really helped. Good helmets.

The eagles have by far the best helmets in the league, which pretty much carries the division imo. Also, the redskins' color scheme is clearly based on Ben's Chili Bowl.

The Cleveland Browns were founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference, under businessman Arthur B "Mickey" McBride.[1] Not long after gaining the franchise, McBride named Ohio State Buckeyes coach Paul Brown as vice president, general manager and head coach. The franchise conducted a team naming contest in 1945. The most popular submission was "Browns" in recognition of Paul Brown, already an established and popular figure in Ohio sports. Brown at first objected to the name and the team selected from the contest entries the name "Panthers."

^^^^^^ omg panthers

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

AFC EAST
Buffalo: When they trot out the awesome throwbacks, it really lets you know that their new uniforms are a miss. B-
New England: When you played New England in their old uniforms, I think the wussiness factor rubbed off on the players. So they gave them some bland, modern b.s. and the players were like "now we can concentrate on something other than how sissy we look." So good for you, but I liked the sissy uniforms better. B-
Miami: I love these uniforms because I have a soft spot for ugly and weird. The logo is one of the best. The '70s/'80s versions with simple white with orange/green highlights were the best, and it's always a mistake when they go with the solid orange or solid green tops. Just say no to home alternate uniforms. B
NY Jets: Love these uniforms a lot. A. Huge improvement over the bland 80s early 90s.

AFC NORTH
Pittsburgh: Total classic. A
Baltimore: C. Pathetic. And especially bad because their defense is so ferocious, and I always think how can anyone be ferocious in those uniforms, so it makes losing to them even more humiliating.
Cleveland: A when they're simple, C when they try to gussy it up. Some things are meant to look classic and simple.
Cincinnati: It's similar to the feeling of wearing leopard print. If you're a cool pimp, you look like a genius. If you're a sad lady, you look like an ugly couch. This team looks like an ugly couch most of the time. C

AFC SOUTH
Tennessee: Oilers 4-eva. Terrible helmets, bad overall theme. Color scheme is nice, though. B
Indianapolis: Very, very boring, but a nice shade of blue and admirable purity. Fits the team's character very well. B
Jacksonville: Terrible, terrible. Very 90s. C
Houston: Their uniforms look like the uniforms that Madden autogenerates when you trot out an expansion team. Boring, by the book, no creativity ... red, white, and blue has been done a million times, so you better nail it (like, in my opinion, the Washington Nationals did). C+

AFC WEST
Denver: F-
San Diego: Love the helmets, but the rest of the uniforms are too modern looking for such a throwback helmet style. Throwback powder blues (and NOT the modern home alternate powder blue) was great, but among the most overrated jerseys in sports. B
Oakland: A+, come on.

we should all agree to agree on the fact that oakland does have straight-up the best fashion of all these teams, no matter what.

yeah the oakland unis are tite

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

I still like Bills' road uniforms (the all white), they're weirdly top heavy w/the black panel on the shoulders. so ugly they're kind of cool.

polyphonic, Monday, 6 October 2008 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

i think the major problem with the current Bills unis is that it's the wrong blue. with the road uniforms, that's less obvious.

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

also excellent thing about oakland: fans dressing up in ridiculous exaggerated costume versions of the mascot -> entire section of stadium looks like wwf legion of doom/mad max

claudia schefter (daria-g), Monday, 6 October 2008 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

The weird thing about Raiders fans is that the dudes in the costumes are the least scary of all of them. Those are just role play nerds with a lot of coin to burn on good tickets. The dudes in the nosebleeds are the rough characters.

i think i am with horseshoe in that the color is what bugs me the most. it's so somber.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

wait is that even what your opinion IS on the matter or am i just lying?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, that is my opinion, that the current uniforms are this death-blue, not the exuberant blue of the kelly years or the awesome throwback blue.

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

i have special affection for teams that have refused to change anything, like the colts - so simple, so classic. cardinals should be a lot better looking considering what they have to work with, color-wise, but points for never changing the logo. XTREME CARDINAL IS HILARIOUS BTW http://www.logoserver.com/football/ArizonaCardinals4.GIF

miami unis ARE ugly and it is bizarre how whenever you watch them you feel like you're watching NFL films footage from 1980 - that shade of aqua always looks sorta dirty and musty no matter what fucking year it is. at the same time there's something super appropriate about the entire scheme and i would hate it if they ever changed. also, the scowling dolphin wearing a futbol helmet is HILARIOUS and basically is the most perfect mascot/logo in sports.

cankles, Monday, 6 October 2008 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the current day love affair with ultra-dark blue type colors is what's destroying unis around the world - bills, broncos, just every dang thing. eagles and squawks too even though they're not really blue

cankles, Monday, 6 October 2008 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's gross. i don't understand why y'all are lukewarm on the regular lions uniform, though. it's pretty! tho the old-school symbol ally linked upthread is amazing.

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

there's something super appropriate about the entire scheme and i would hate it if they ever changed.

i think it is because the dolphins are so hatable and the uniforms help place the viewer in that hating-comfort-zone by virtue of their ugliness. if the dolphins ever got hott uniforms i would mourn.

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

Can't believe that cankles likes the Lions alternates! Who can I trust in these troubled times?

I'm for the AFC West being the best division.

Raiders- Classic and very influential as the back in black look has been ripped off by tons of clubs. Their logo is badass.
Broncos- I like the newer blue uniforms and helmets. I think they may be the best look of the 90s updates. The old orange crush unis were unique and not too shabby either.
Chargers- The baby blue classic uniforms are freaking dope, almost too cool to waste as a regular uniform. I like the dark blue helmet with the bolts better than white helmet. The dark blue uniforms are really cool. The uniforms that were more white and gold with the lighting bolts on the arms that the Fouts 80s teams wore were nice too.
Chiefs- It is a classic style, kind of like the Colts except in red and white. The modern uniforms are not far removed from the old 60s ones from the AFL in the same way the Colts still have the same look (although the blue looks lighter in the current Colt unis). The arrowhead logo is also pretty good.

I wouldn't go on the Dolphins holding back the AFC East. Their color scheme wouldn't work anywhere else but in Miami and a team that started playing in the Orange Bowl, but it works for Florida. I like it better than those J-ville uniforms, which are garish like all of the colors in Florida. The Jets look pretty fuddy as green is just not the color for a team called the Jets. There is a reason the Irish of Notre Dame quit wearing green and why Oregon looks terrible in any sport. I think only the Packers can rock the green and make it work and that is the helmet and logo that makes it work. The Pats old helmet is classic in a way as the guy is actually hiking the ball, but their newer ones always looked kind of USFL to me. Buffalo has a cool logo and the uniforms are not bad.
