ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Jim Zorn produced another of those priceless visual moments that have become standard at his weekly news conferences. The Washington Redskins coach lifted his shoulders and began strutting in place - maybe a hint of a Michael Jackson moonwalk? - to emphasize his point. "I don't think we saw ourselves as an elite team, strutting ourselves, walking in and saying 'We are so awesome,'" Zorn said.

Let's also not forget that Dan Marino never, EVER, made a mental error or threw a bad pass in his entire career. How you could tell this is because every time a ball went where a receiver was not Dan would point with the finger and his face would say: furious anger.
He was an amazing quarterback and douche.
Whereas every time Jim Kelly walked off the field after a failed 3rd down conversion he would pull off his chinstrap and look down and shake his head as if to say "I have let down my team and my coach and my fans but I will carry this burden and have steely resolve and convert the next one because my teammates and the people of Buffalo deserve it."

Being someone that grew up watching football in the 80s, I think Dan Marino was the best of that bunch. He didn't play on as good a clubs as Montana and he didn't have the athletic mojo like Elway, who was about impossible to sack as he could move around the pocket and make a play, but Marino could throw about the best deep ball ever. The dude could hit 40 yard spiral passes like a laser and got rid of the ball so quick. I went and saw the Colts (pre Peyton) play in person a few times oddly enough seemingly always the Dolphins and they would always get up on Miami only to have Marino beat them on the last minute or so.
My favorite local NFL add is that for the past couple of years Colt center Jeff Saturday has the 'Saturday' special, which is actually on Sundays at Penn Station subs. Those are the types of dudes who really need to get a couple of extra bucks.

SD @ BUF -- Interesting match up, but I still don't know enough about the Bills to pick them to win. I'll go the more known quantity with the Chargers.NO @ CAR -- This could be a good game, but I think the Panthers have a more complete club.MIN @ CHI -- The Bears are going to be pissed and I feel they could roll the Vikings.PIT @ CIN -- The Bengals are a mess, the fans are revolting and their QB is broken. The Steelers will have it done by half time. Pretty sad.TEN @ KC -- KC has got some issues other than just sucking. I don't think the Titans will get rattled by the noise and will just pound KC into the turf as they just play to win the game.BAL @ MIA -- I tell you, B-more got burned on some deeep balls but the turnovers seem to be what sunk them. Miami is improved but I see this as pretty even as they got to run not throw through the Ravens D. It's a strech but I will go Ravens.SF @ NYG -- Giants will bounce back, but I could see it being somewhat close.DAL @ STL -- Brad Johnson is old as dirt, but maybe having him around will get the Cowboys back to just running the ball a bit more. They got plenty of tools. I can't see the Rams winning this one, but I hope they do as I always kind of liked Jim Haslett who got burned in so many games where they lost only in the way the Saints can lose games. My favorite being that one where the dude tossed the helmet on the last play of the game with a penalty being called and the other team got a second chance at the field goal...what a total Saints way to grasp defeat out of the jaws of victory.DET @ HOU -- Houston has some decent players and might be a bit better than their record. Detroit is on the road, which means they are not going to win squat, so Texans it is.IND @ GB -- I think the thing on the Colts offense last week is that Manning, Wayne and Harrison actually connected on the deep bombs. They have been throwing them up this year, but they have not been getting the completions. When the Colts are hitting on that deep stuff, especially early in the game, most clubs are in some deep trouble. Last time the Packers were in Indy, they tried the track meet and got rolled. I'm going Indy, as I don't think Green Bay can control the clock like J-ville (or really Minnesota) did to them on the ground. The loss to the Bears was a bit of a fluke as they gave up 9 points on an interception return and a safety. I'm going Colts.NYJ @ OAK -- I'm going Jets. If you want to be a playoff team, they got to win these kind of games.CLE @ WAS -- Redskins seem to be the better club, but who knows, some clubs look good for a month then turn to crud and vice versa. Maybe next month people will be all hot again on the Browns and think the Redskins are a fluke.SEA @ TB -- FUGLY MATCHUP OF THE WEEK...Tampa is decent, Seattle is a wreck. I'll go Bucs.DEN @ NE -- Hurm...this is a hard one to figure. NE is better on the defense and should be able to move the ball, but Denver seems to play them pretty good. I'm going NE, but I could see Denver winning if they hit up early and NE has to throw to keep up.

At the time of the delay, on-field officials addressed both teams at the line of scrimmage. Players from both teams then went to their respective sidelines. Some stretched, while others stood around talking with their helmets off. Lynch rode a stationary bike, while Bills quarterback Trent Edwards played catch with backup J.P. Losman.
they should have just hooked up a generator to marshawns bike i bet he coulda powered the stadium on beast mode

OK is NBC sunday night football using KMFDM music now?
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Sunday, 19 October 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)
crennell can maybe boast a successful icing of shaun "shazzam" suisham at the end of the 1st half in the bronws-skins game. so, waste a timeout...it just MIGHT work!
― j.q higgins, Monday, 20 October 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)
wait, is tonight's game seriously SEA @ TB? who approved this shit??

haha i love when they show slo mo replays of blocked kicks and the camera always heads up towards the goalposts and then has to hastily backtrack like when you pretend to throw a ball and a dog runs after it for a second before realizing its not there― max, Sunday, October 19, 2008 7:26 PM (Yesterday)
This is pretty much my favorite thing in the whole world btw
― forksclovetofu, Monday, 20 October 2008 01:10 (seventeen years ago)
Ok I do not love it when it looks like some dude might have broken his neck and they replay THAT in slow motion.
Luckily Hilliard got up after that hit.. ugh

Ok tampa bay, logo is tacky, font on team name @ endzone turf is tacky, that pirate ship thing near the field that fires cannons whenever they put points on the board is unbelievably tacky and awful
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)
the hilliard hit was unwatchable
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah.. I wasn't trying to watch it, saw the replay not knowing that was what happened.

― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)
the giant pirate ship in the stadium is unbelievably gay, yes
tho there is a part of me that wishes the rest of the nfl would camp it up like that every now and then
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)
Bucs already had excellent camp and then they had to do some godawful xtreme sports redesign. However it would be kind of cool if the pirate ship shot .. I dunno slime like on nickelodeon or something
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Monday, 20 October 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)
how can they even be the buccaneers when there is already a raiders?

was the browns play calling SO bad? seems they probably would've won had edwards not dropped most things thrown his way. i do question them conmsistently callign swing passes when anderson inexplicably has not yet masteed that facet of the game.

― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)
Ah I see they got Portis. Uh guess I was tuned out that season..
dudes, Matt Cassel. gaaaah what 5 sacks?!
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago)
it was pretty unusual in that it was a direct player-for-player swap, iirc - portis hasn't been as good in wash as he was in denver, not by a long shot (back to back seasons of 1500 yards, ~15 TDs, 5.5 YPC, unbelievable stuff), but i still think of it as a win-win trade, he's been real consistent and he's still only 27, which is sorta amazing to me, it feels like he's been around FOREVER
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)
No doubt, as a Skins fan feel like I've been watching him for I dunno 7 seasons or so.
Ok can I add Welker to favorite players list? That guy.

ha jordan i was wondering if i was a sociopath because the crowd all got to its feet to cheer rodney harrison getting taken off on the cart and i was not even slightly moved.
randy moss is really adorable, though; they keep showing him grinning on the way to commercial.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)
srsly the funniest fucking thing ever about the pats losing was knowing that rodney harrison and junior seau were ;_; inside
― jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)
losing the sb
breaking news: bill belichick is not tony kornheiser's best friend.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)
rodney harrison gets such a bad rap, it's criminal - seriously! he's the ultimate illustration of how media narratives craft the way we view players. marvin harrison is one of the more unpleasant ppl in the league, but he gets treated like he's the classiest guy in the world cuz he never talks and he hands the ball to the ref after TDs. tedi bruschi's a universally reviled sociopath who gets all kinds of slob-jobs by the press cuz he's a GRITTY WHITE GUY who plays with his kids or some shit. rodney's a really nice dude who's passionate and plays a position of which dirty play is expected and ENCOURAGED by coaches (the hard hitting safety), and honestly over the course of his career he is not a dirtier player than the likes of john lynch or ronnie lott.
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)
What's the beef with Seau though? I was so amused last year after super bowl I HAVE STILL NOT GOTTEN OVER IT they interviewed Seau and he was like OH WELL I LOVE FOOTBALL
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)
btw i <3 randy
i just think its funny that those old ass dudes were feeling totally entitled to the championship (esp seau) but then they didn't get it
― jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)
Bruschi really? I never read much commentary abt that stuff until this year
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)
i think i might be sleep-deprived but i sort of teared up at that vikings fan all kitted out in the stands to cheer for Randy.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)
that was amazing to me, because i'm pretty sure that guy has been a minnesota mainstay since the 90s, and i had NO IDEA he travelled on the road just to see randy. that delighted me too!!!
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)
I heart randy moss too it was good to see that guy looking happy on the sideline. I hope he picks up a ring or two or three in the rest of his time in the league.. I guess viking dude goes to all his games. Wtf, but it is randy moss
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)
daria i know a dude who knew bruschi in hs (lol) and he sez he was a fucking psycho - this is corroborated by the stuff a former pats beat writer said abt him earlier this year
SCHEF!!!!! Grab a bucket or a trash bag or something
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)
Tedy Bruschi is much more popular with the fans than he is with his teammates. He isn't the team leader people think he is. Actually, Bruschi rarely talks to any of his teammates. He and Mike Vrabel used to be close but they rarely interact anymore either. Bruschi is just an unlikable person in general and I think his teammates know what's what and get sick of his act. He created an image that he presents to the public but his teammates know better. The real leaders of the Patriots are Tom Brady, Matt Light, Richard Seymour and the top guy, Rodney Harrison. Harrison is actually one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet off the field, which is a total contrast to his sometimes dirty play on it.
The Bruschi shit is 10000% legit. He has been hated by EVERYONE since he was a kid. Coaches, class mates, teammates, family members. He was such a fucking asshole to his family that his parents rented out a duplex for him live in by himself when he was in high school just to get him out of their hair. When he was home from college he'd routinely show up to high school parties which more times than not ended with him beating the shit out of the person hosting the party for no real reason. Also, he MAY have fucked one of his second cousins while high.
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)
i was thinking about this stuff yesterday when i was watching some highlights on nfl gameday - every once in a while you'll see these sideline shots of star players, usual diva receivers and whatnot, hollaring at coaches as if to underline what volatile crybabies these guys are, but i guarantee you pretty much every player goes through that during most games! everyone yells and cusses at each other, it's just the kind of environment it is, and it's almost never personal. cf. that clip of peyton calling saturday a motherfucker and going apeshit on him, to the point where tarik glenn had to escort him away from the o-linemen on the sideline
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)
okay i am willing to believe rodney harrison is nice off the field but you can't take my brady and belichick hate away from me.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)
yeah after the cowboys got down 21-0 on sunday they started showing t.o. on the side lines every .056 seconds in an obvious effort to catch him strangling brad johnson or something but instead they caught him having a pretty reasonable looking conversation with romo
― jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)
I'll say one thing, the Bears games have been some of the most fun to watch all year, even a couple of the nail biters that they have lost. They are going into a bye week at 4-3 which is way better than expected. Kyle Orton is starting to move from just functional QB play to looking pretty good, it is kind of crazy.
I don't know about Ronnie Lott being a dirty player, but he might have gotten fined in the current NFL, but I don't remember him getting in trouble back in those days. Rodney Harrison got busted for using performance enhancing drugs and has been fined a bunch for dirty hits like nearly double digits. John Lynch has been fined a couple of times big time and he nearly killed Dallas Clark a couple of years ago. Clark has had some problems with concussions pop up a couple of times since Lynch nearly beheaded him. Someone does that hit like Lynch today, they would toss him out for a month. I think Lynch got a huge fine, but I don't think he got kicked out of any games.

― TOMBOT, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)
eh, i dont care what drugs anyone takes. merriman's ONE failed test was blown way outta proportion for instance (though it's much more serious in rod's case, cuz he left an actual paper trail). i'm not gonna say that rodney's not dirty, cuz he is, but when you think about the dirtiest players in the league it's always a.) safeties b.) o-linemen, because a certain degree of it is actually expected. maybe i'm over-rationalizing cuz i love rodney - okay i definately am - but at the same time i do think he gets singled out for it a lil too much. i also think there's different kinds of dirty, like the conrad dobler or romo type guys who are malicious and try to break guys' pinkie fingers at the bottom of a pile, and then there's the john lynches and rodney harrisons who are excessively rough and unsafe, but more as a product of adrenaline than sadism? idk, mb i'm fulla shit

― horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know, I just couldn't go and say Rodney Harrison is getting a bum rap on being a dirty player. You might as well come back and say Bill Romanowski was just misunderstood, cause Harrison is just a few rungs down the ladder from that freak at least in his on the field actions. I'll give that Harrison might not eat babies for lunch or anything. Albert Haynesworth seems like a big puppy in interviews and he stomped on a guys head without a helmet a couple of years ago, so anything is possible.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'M CALLING IT - Bills come unstuck once the divisional games hit for them and NE wins AFC East. i am going to bookmark this post to c&p at the end of the regular season. feel free to do the same.

Colts O-line is a problem. They cannot run the ball, which they have always been able to do, even the couple of years they were not that great with Manning. The thing that is hurting them is that they have also given up 3 TDs (two on interceptions, 1 on a fumble and a safety equality -23 points) on offense. Early in Mannings career, that was a big problem. Manning throwing TDs to the other team probably cost Mora his job, as I swear Peyton threw like 5 or 6 TDs to the opposition in Jimbos last year as coach. It isn't Dungy's Buc defense, it isn't made to get a small lead and hold it. I think for the most part Indy's D they have done as well as can be expected and kept them in the game. If Manning gets The Colts a TD instead of having an INT go back for 6, the game is a 3 point game, that play was a 14 point turn around alone. That same kind of play pretty much cost them the Bears game too. I could still see them making the playoffs and considering how evened out everything is right now, the team hot going into December might win it all.

OMG RANDY IN PRESS CONFERENCE IS SO HAPPY!
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 04:03 (seventeen years ago)
I have no idea who is going to win it all this year, nearly half way through the season, I think it is really wide open.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 04:04 (seventeen years ago)

i would be astonished if the colts missed the playoffs, if only because i cant even remember the last time that happened. even if they lose the division, the WC competition isn't exactly stellar. otm about o-line trubblez tho
re: superbowl, i sorta just have a FEELING about pittsburgh this year, even with that atrocious o-line and the dying running backs. otherwise yea, who the hell knows

Hmmm yeah but wasn't pitt only putting up like 10 points a game early on? Srsly I have no idea what to think now, would like to see a bills game.. Is Tennessee overrated? Don't get their games either..
― claudia schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)
the point is it is week eight and as far as we can tell nobody has played anybody good yet, we only know that the bengals and the chiefs suck.
― TOMBOT, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)
also the seahawks
― jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)
the point is that there is nobody good. there's a bunch of teams and then there are the lions and the bengals and whoever else.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)
daria, the Bills have a pretty soft schedule, to the extent that that means anything this year. but they have beaten the Jags and the Chargers and Trent Edwards is having a good year.

― my sweet coconut (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 05:12 (seventeen years ago)
ps also you are right Titans are scarier than anyone else in AFC right now. it's also impossible to tell how soft the schedule is or ain't right now. shit the RAMS vistory is starting to look like quality, and the division is starting to look like arguably the toughest in the league.
Thing about Buffalo (in addition to that as a fan your heart knows they will brake it and is just waiting for how), and why everyone's still all hem haw wrt them is they're a 5-1 team with no identity. They're not smash-mouth; they don't put on an airshow; they're not a Bryce Paup Years defensive strangling squad. They just execute every phase of the game really, like, super-competently and have a grebt punter and really seem like a TEAM in a way that totally includes Turk Schonert and Perry Fewell and are basically what Dick Jauron would be if Dick Jauron was a football team.
Which it's weird not to be laughing at him but is kind of the mark of the great ones.
― my sweet coconut (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 05:37 (seventeen years ago)
i also think there's different kinds of dirty, like the conrad dobler or romo type guys who are malicious and try to break guys' pinkie fingers at the bottom of a pile, and then there's the john lynches and rodney harrisons who are excessively rough and unsafe, but more as a product of adrenaline than sadism? idk, mb i'm fulla shit
not fulla shit this is bigtime otm
bills v. g-men again?
i'll be curious to see what the steelers do against the nfc east. a good test for all parties involved, i reckon.
re: portis, above
if he stays relatively healthy this year, he should take sole possession of number 2 for all time running yards by a washington running back and would probably pass riggo next year.
btw, betts is top 10!
― j.q higgins, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)
so what are the odds on harrison just retiring? i mean the dude has been in the league about 800 years now.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)
Man, I really really like Welker. Dude got me fifty bucks by running hard!
― forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
Welker is the king of getting the extra 2-3 yards he needs for a first down.

Zorn's wife, Joy, plays the viola. Zorn, as you may have heard, is always anxious to learn new skills. So around Christmas time in the late '70s, he decided that he could certainly pick up something so simple as the viola.
(Bog interruption: I asked Clinton Portis if he plays any instruments, and he scoffed, like I was a fool. "Saxophone," he said. "I'm (bleeping) Luther Vandross." Just passing it along. Back to Zorn.)
"I thought I'd be a little smart-aleck and I said, 'I can play this thing, there's only four strings, " the coach said after today's practice. "And I'm left-handed, so I played it left-handed, [even though] it's strung for a right-handed person, and I started learning."
