at least you care about the nfc east! for the rest of us primetime games are like multiple choice test questions:
what are this week's primetime games?

― vampire baseball (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)
there are four (4) mnf games featuring nfc east teams guys, two (2) thursday night game featuring nfc east teams, and five (5) sunday night games featuring nfc east teams, most of which they are playing each other or PITTSBURGH and CLEVELAND, grow up! that is split between 4 teams, not one greedy bastard of a team!

also they have tony kornheiser talking during them
Flexing Monday/Thurs games would be deeply fan-unfriendly to the people who actually attend the games. And the fact is, although Card/Niners and Browns/Bills looked like horrible matchups, as individual games they totally had their moments. Granted those moments will not impact division/WC races in much of a meaningful way, but the price you pay for the LEAGUE OF PARITY is at least 50% turnover in playoff teams year to year and no one ever knowing who is any good. Jax/Hou was a cool matchup--in August.

xpost...yes...? being as they are on network prime time all of the time.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)
seriously i just don't understand your point. i DON'T see how switching a game from sunday day to monday night would inconvenience a majority of attending fans, and certainly not that much more than switching a sunday day to a sunday night would do.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
yeah flexing the thursday night games might be an issue but i have to imagine that a large portion of ppl who go to games, especially in areas like cleveland, are going to attend the game whether it's on sunday night or monday night or friday morning
― lupe fiasco from the hilarious lupe fiasco albums (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah schef but it's not just fans. Putting on a football game is an actual logistical undertaking involving 100s of stadium staff, a bunch of jets, a bunch of hotel rooms, two football teams and dozens and dozens of team staff, a convoy of trucks full of equipment traveling between two major cities, a fucking army of TV and other media people, etc. etc. I agree the league could in theory flex mon/thurs games but I'm guessing it would be a tough economic sell where these things are all booked in advance and would have to be rebooked with something like three weeks' notice.
The league is actually kind of screwed either way it picks these matchups. If they really played it safe, the primetime games would basically be the steelers, pats, colts, jets, the NFC east, and maybe the packers--i.e. teams with a consistently good record or a large fanbase that will watch anyway, and we would all bitch about it. If they try to pick interesting matchups based on how teams did the prior year (which is how you get Bills/Browns and JAX/HOU), we get a variety of teams but a lot of irrelevant games.

the whole thing blows my mind, just because it would never occur to me to email my favorite team's GM and expect any kind of response at all - tho really i'm not even sure how i would get my favorite team's GM's email address either
― ಥ﹏ಥ (cankles), Friday, 21 November 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)
Timeline according to the paper:
11:37 - fan emails Savage ripping the Browns (despite the fact they were winning at the time)
12:17 - Savage replys "Go Root for the Bills - Fuck You" (23 minutes after the game had ended)
The fan's name was Brett, which leads me to believe this was another typical Favre prank.
― brownie, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)
there was indications in the story that this is not the first time "brett" has harrassed them via email
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 21 November 2008 20:01 (seventeen years ago)
would love to get Crennel wired up during games taking emails and putting half of cleveland asleep
"We're playing Brady Quinn with a broken finger because the doctor said he could play. If the doctor said he couldn't play then we would not play him."

CIN @ PIT - It really wasn't like I was going to take Cinci.HOU @ CLE - I'd say if you combine the strain of losing the Oilers to how the Texans have been as a franchise, there is some similar angst between both fanbases. Rosenfeld's is pretty much 0-2 against the Colts on his own, not that Cleveland fans don't have a hate love affection for their QB. I'm still not sold on Quinn, Rick Mirer looked pretty good for a few weeks too before the truth sunk in.BUF @ KC - The Bills should win.NE @ MIA - Urr...this one is kind of a toughie, I'll go NE but I don't feel confident about it. I keep thinking that maybe losing Maroney was kind of a tipping point. It didn't become evident right after it happened, but they could use a back that could bust big plays.CHI @ STL - The Bears got their asses kicked last week, this one kind of says where they are going. TB @ DET - Tampa kind of plays ugly, so I could see how Detroit could maybe win, but the Bucs are also kind of quietly rolling along so probably not.NYJ @ TEN - God I hope Tennessee wins, if not ESPN and the football industrial complex will not shut up about it for the next week or two.SF @ DAL - I've got long term issues with the 49ers, but I would not mind if they knocked off the Cowboys. I'll pull for a tie.MIN @ JAC - The Jags are not right, while Minnesota is kind of a flawed club, I'm thinking they could win this one on the road. PHI @ BAL - I'm going with the Eagles, mostly as Baltimore has probably been playing a bit above their station and Philly a bit below.OAK @ DEN - Cutler's arm is freaking epic.NYG @ ARI - Arizona gets another chance to step up, but I think Warner is going to end up getting sacked a half dozen times and the Giants will pummel them. It won't be a pretty score, maybe something like 19-13.CAR @ ATL - I really don't know either of these clubs. Atlanta looked pretty good against the Bears, but that was a month back. Pick em...WAS @ SEA - Washington should out class them, but for some reason (not logic) I feel Seattle might make this one interesting.IND @ SD - SD usually plays the Colts well and has given Manning some fits with their pass rush, but I'm pulling for Indy. One of these weeks Manning is going to hit on all of those just missed deep passes and they will drop 40+ on a club. It might not be this week, but the Chargers deffense doesn't seem to be the same.GB @ NO - The couple of times I have seen the Packers, they have played excellent, but teams have run on them a bunch. I could see this one being a shoot out. Packers seem more together than the Saints to me.

I keep thinking that maybe losing drafting Maroney was kind of a tipping point. It didn't become evident right after it happened, but they could use a back that could bust big plays.

all the crazy coaches team's have, you'd think they have something like a "legal advisor." like, someone's whose job it is to just know the nfl rulebook cold.

lololololol @ eagles
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 23 November 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago)
btw, re those Cassel numbers - first ever back-to-back 400 yard passing games in Pats history (first in NFL since 2002 i think they said), first ever back-to-back 500 yards total offense in Pats history. he has beena lot better today than vs the Jets last week.

DEREK ANDERSON, NEVER FORGET
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 November 2008 21:23 (sixteen years ago)
ugh what a Texans/Browns game. Browns bench Quinn after he threw two interceptions in a row. Quinns passer rating was 21 and Anderson's was 17. Jamal Lewis hasn't fumbled once this year and fumbles twice in this game.
Sage Rosenkranz was a thing of sublime perfection thanks to a defense that refuses to play anywhere near the receiver.
― brownie, Sunday, 23 November 2008 21:37 (sixteen years ago)
oh and Braylon Edwards dropped at least three passes
― brownie, Sunday, 23 November 2008 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

i'm guessing philly doesnt take a big hit bcz they were playing baltisnooze who are like 4th in dvoa - still, what a dumb dogshit team i hate them all so much
― dj2xdee (cankles), Monday, 24 November 2008 04:32 (sixteen years ago)
btw I find it kind of sad and also educational that the way to beat the titans turned out to be man coverage in the backfield while stacking the line against the run. Welcome to, I don't know, pick a past decade. Jeff Fisher has been weighed and found wanting. OTOH it does prove that playing old school bullshit with half-talented players can win you a hell of a bunch of games even in MADDEN 09 times

tombot u actin like there's some massive gulf between the titans style of ballin vs the giants - aint happenin my dude. giants obv way better in passing game but the downhill power-run based attack is a valid way to build a team and a winning one cf. a shitload of teams this year, you can't write off the titans as 'half-talented' either wtf?
btw you really need to put that loss as much on the defense that shit the bed versus LORD FAVRE
― dj2xdee (cankles), Monday, 24 November 2008 04:43 (sixteen years ago)

― dj2xdee (cankles), Monday, 24 November 2008 04:45 (sixteen years ago)
i mean why is willem dafoe even in this movie. why is brett favre still playing. why does andy reid still have a job. there's just a lot of questions.
xpost favre is a clown. i'm sorry, but it had to be said. the dude has a great arm. the dude has limited control over such arm. it's like will smith in i robot, except a drug-addicted good ol' boy instead of a chuck taylors-obsessed robot hater.
well, i mean favre might hate robots too.
xpost again dude trust me i'm not hoping for this, nor do i necessarily think it's an actuality -- i do think they're highly, easily beatable thanks to lord favre's touchy arm and the fact that they're the jets. but i'm concerned as to who in the afc can actually do this because, god, seriously, what happened to you guys. steelers are more likely, still. neither of these teams will beat the giants which means i will have to get a goddamned giants tattoo thanks to my drunken betting.
xxxpost again the cards are a cursed franchised with a cursed gay bird on their helmet and a cursed ownership and a stadium full of bandwagon cursed fans who live in a terrible hell inferno ghetto -- they will never go the super bowl.

man you kids are highly attuned for this late on a sunday nightanyway canks I'm sorry if you didn't think fisher's method wasn't due for an embarrassing loss or whatever. The fuck I care if the jets go anywhere in the postseason - anybody who cares about NFL football cares about seeing #4 retire, take his beige alpaca blazer and go home - but the titans even pretending to some kinda undefeated elite status is nonsense. I mean whatever go play those teams names after cats and horses and pirates a few more times. big win. kerry collins.
― TOMBOT, Monday, 24 November 2008 04:59 (sixteen years ago)
I'm really more concerned with how andy reid still has a job. he's dragging down the whole division with his incompetence. Hello dude there is a six flags jackass down the road who is trying to be the east coast al davis as hard as he can, you are making him look good, what in the jesus fucking christo fuck a goat fuck for real

this is kinda what i was saying earlier minus the al davis and the goat fucking. you can bench every member of the eagles, but the problem is the play calling. why he keep calling deep balls (L O L) on 3rd and 1? it's like clockwork. every goddamned 3rd and 1, you know they're airing it out. AND THE CLOCK MANAGEMENT my god it makes the giants' consistent delay of games look like the 80s 49ers for god's sake. andy reid just isn't...well. they need something else. the controversial t.o. "the team gave up" super bowl? the team didn't give up! their coach is just unable to manage a 60 minute game.
ps now i'm watching the colbert christmas special.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 24 November 2008 05:10 (sixteen years ago)
yeah andy reid is just... dang, dude. andy reid.
look doggie i dont think the titans are that good or nothin, no surprise they finally got cornholed, but casting it as some kinda FISH STUCK IN STONE AGE LOL GET A REAL SCHEME thing just dont work imo
tangentially, i have been wondering this since vince was benched - how much would the average titans fan hate it if THIS was the team that won the SB? is there a less likable core of players than lendale, k collins and haynesworth? can u imagine steve mcnair sitting on his couch watching that shit? shame on a nigga ~_~

― some dude's gotta give (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 November 2008 05:20 (sixteen years ago)
oh hell i agree with this -- the titans are a good team! they're not as good as their record but they're real good so this whole old schemes get sonned doesn't really work imo either?
but i'm still so against them because kerry collins? fuck you! you were so not good w the giants! (see also: k. warner. god and alcohol: one and the same?)
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 24 November 2008 05:20 (sixteen years ago)
ya i elected to leave him out, and it's impossible not to love my dude algernon, moot point since titans will be 1 and done anyway
also guys i just GIS'd 'neckbeard' (pause, n/h) for reasons unrelated to football and this was one of the results

"i still can't get my head around the fact that the jets are good?"
Don't worry, I'm sure they will come back to Earth next year. For the better part of the last 10 years or so, it seems that the Jets will have about one good year and then slide back into mediocrity. They appeared to be getting good with Parcells with Vinnie at the helm, then they slid off. Then they appeared to be getting good with Herm and Chad, then they slid off. They never seem to be able to sustain much success season to season.
They have only had back to back 10 win years twice in their history, one was with the Namath team and the last was in the mid 80s when they had the sack exchange with Mark Gastineau and Joe Klecko.
"but i'm still so against them because kerry collins? fuck you! you were so not good w the giants!"
Kerry Collins really was more of a scapegoat of a club that had bunches of talent and absolutely no discipline. That offensive line used to get penalties like they were going out of style, Barber was a fumbler and then you had goats like Shockey who could pull off great plays but then do stuff that was abysmally stupid. Collins wasn't great, but he was solid, but then he went into the Raider black hole, but I think the guy could still play in the right circumstance, which is what he is proving.
The vet QB resurfacing thing happens quite a bit.
Jim Plunkett - two Superbowl winsRandall Cunningham - NFL MVPRich Gannon - NFL MVPKurt Warner - this year...Tommy Maddox - Didn't last long or nearly as great, but the dude came out of nowhere.
Vinny Testaverde was also left out for scrap a couple of times and came back and back. (In hindsight, probably not the best move the Baltimore did.) Doug Williams also came out of nowhere to win a Superbowl long after his best seasons too.

^^^ otm, i actually didn't know that, but this is completely true.
― T-PALIN (daria-g), Monday, 24 November 2008 05:50 (sixteen years ago)
The Giants and Titans are about the same club with a power running game and killer defensive line. I think the Giants have a bit more of a deep passing game as their wide outs are better, but that is really about the only difference. Not too surprising considering there are ties to the 80s Bears and Giants clubs in their coaches, which were about the same type teams.
― earlnash, Monday, 24 November 2008 06:06 (sixteen years ago)
yo I have had too many delicious beeeeeerrrzzz to try and read all the science you folks just dropped, but just right now That Fucker Eisen just called Eli the MVP. WTF dude I HATE the fucking pats and even I have the sack to call it like it is, if you gotta be all fantasy gay and call another QB an MVP, call it how it is, shit, man. If Tom Fucking Homo Brady ain't damaged goods then this season isn't even about THE FAVRE EFFECT. So depending on how you see your job as a sports dickwad. either Future HOFer Brady or the nameless DL who killed him is the MVP. Don't pretend to fuck with me. This is how history gets fucked up. LYNDON JOHNSON, GREATEST FANTASY PICK EVER.

i actually did! well some of it. 3 down football is crazy. plus mtl scored a point by kicking a punt into the end zone but essentially that swung ALL the momentum cuz CGY was then given the ball on the 35! we had no idea what was happening!!

What I thought was interesting is how much the Jets looked like the 2007 Packers. Farve wasn't throwing bombs all over the place, never a good thing, but making a lot of short drop 10-15 yard passes and letting the receivers make yardage after the catch. As long as they stay in that scheme they look fine, when they don't its interception time.
Good God, the browns are sad. I'm surprised there haven't been mass suicides in Cleveland. That city has some of the best, most loyal fans in the NFL, and every year they get completed screwed.
― leavethecapital, Monday, 24 November 2008 15:07 (sixteen years ago)
The Browns are making me consider a move to the Island of Doctor Morbius where football has been outlawed and feral cheerleaders roam the island in packs, hunted like vermin...

OK it's half a day later and I'm still furious about the end of the Colts/Chargers game. Exactly the kind of tacky, bullshit win the Colts have been specializing in for years against a team that could easily beat them save for coaching/guaranteed 4th quarter flameouts. HEY NORV--if you are that mad about kicking a FG maybe you should just go for it!
Indy's clock management is absolutely superlative, I will give them that.

response from 'nucker friend of mine:
This is one of the great features of the Canadian game. If a football is kicked into the endzone (punt or missed field goal) the opposing team must run it out. If they don’t or it’s kicked through the endzone then the kicking team gets 1 point (officially called a rouge but commonly called a single). The opposing team then gets the ball on the 35 yard line. Many a game has been decided when the kicking team misses a field goal and the opposing team punts it out of their own end zone as clock expires.
