SF @ MIA let's go Singletaries
SEA @ STL no no no, why. Seattle.
BUF @ NYJ I also hope it's Buffalo.
SD @ KC yikes. Super Chargers?
WAS @ CIN Washington, if they want to finish 8-8. Things are fuuuuuuuuuuuucked up with this organization right now. Unless some kind of miracle happens.. So depressing. Snyder is going to turn it into the Raiders, and unfortunately dude is a lot lot younger than Al Davis.
TEN @ HOU Tennessee, though Houston might make it close?
GB @ JAC Pack
DET @ IND duh
MIN @ ARI Zona
PIT @ BAL Should be.. either really interesting or completely terrible 6-5 game, right? Pittsburgh.

I DON'T MIND THE NFL (daria-g), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

I can't believe you guys are picking NO. Bearz are going to feed those guys their own testicles, Brees will get picked thrice, Deuce is going to get racked up for the season on his first carry on the ice, and Bush/Thomas are going to combine for a staggering 60 rushing yards.

WmC, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

NO @ CHI the bears make their fans believe that they can make a move, when in actuality they just beat a mediocre team
TB @ ATL the bucs are going to win but im rooting for falcons v hard
SF @ MIA i think the dolphins streak of beating mediocre teams by 3-6 points comes to an end here
SEA @ STL rams, for some reason
BUF @ NYJ jets get it back in gear here
SD @ KC chargers, close though
WAS @ CIN fighting zorns, closer than it should be though
TEN @ HOU titans, but in the last two minutes
GB @ JAC jax - i wonder when people are going to start doubting my mans rodgers?
DET @ IND hahaha they should strike this game from the schedule
MIN @ ARI interesting one - ill say the cards since it's at home
PIT @ BAL i think the ravens will be a trendy pick but the steelers dont lose these games
DEN @ CAR carolina is filthy but i think they have a lil let down here and run into a big day from cutler
NE @ OAK pats obv
NYG @ DAL boys - ill never not get tricked into thinking the cowboys are good
CLE @ PHI eagles

you brought me home to this funky house (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

Awww I am super-touched by this thread title. Now on to week 15!!

NO @ CHI Interesting matchup. If nola keeps a balanced attack they could win, but I'm inclined to pick BEARS defense at home.
TB @ ATL Huge game and definite bounceback for BUCS.
SF @ MIA I still like FINS against all mediocre/bad teams.
SEA @ STL Wow, HAWKS will leverage signs of life last week into victory number three.
BUF @ NYJ bills look doa but I will stubbornly pick them against Jets. Wait, unless Losman is playing. Actually, fuck it, JETS.
SD @ KC CHIEFS in a close, low-scoring game.
WAS @ CIN SKINS in a miserable, low-scoring game, will be carried by their defense.
TEN @ HOU Interesting, I will pick the v. hot COWS
GB @ JAC Two teams in freefall but jax has proven over the last two weeks that they cannot be picked right now. PACK.
DET @ IND fuck the COLTS forever.
MIN @ ARI CARDS win at home and help themselves for the playoffs.
PIT @ BAL daria is correct. Sadly I think STEEL will steal another win.
DEN @ CAR Delhomme will fuck them over eventually but for now it's CATS.
NE @ OAK Ummm PATS will win game.
NYG @ DAL Really hard to say where the boys are now. I don't think GINTS will lose two in a row but I am not very confident about this pick.
CLE @ PHI lol @ media being like IGS are good now. They're not.

vampire baseball (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:34 (sixteen years ago)

it's not fair, to play detroit. SOME teams ahem vikings packers and bears get to play them TWICE A YEAR -- i mean what the fuck is that.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah that fact definitely downgrades the "good" NFC North teams a bit. Same could be said about Zona though. The NFC is so unbalanced right now.

vampire baseball (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

LOLions:
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—Detroit center Dominic Raiola says he has no remorse for making an obscene gesture toward Lions fans because their heckling went too far.
“I don’t take one thing back,” he said Monday.
NFL spokesman Randall Liu said the league will look into it.
Raiola said fans have been particularly hard on him because he’s been with the team since 2001, when it started a slide that has become the NFL’s worst eight-season stretch in more than a half-century.
Raiola made the gesture Sunday during the winless Lions’ 20-16 loss to Minnesota.
“I’m just tired of hearing it coming at just me,” Raiola said. “It’s coming at me because I’ve been here for years. I’ve been through the losing. Me, Jeff (Backus) and whoever else are the head of the losing.”
The Lions (0-13) have lost 20 of their last 21 and are 31-94 since 2001, falling to the league’s poorest winning percentage (.248) over an eight-season stretch since 1950.
“I’m just so frustrated,” Raiola said. “I’m tired of being a doormat for people to just talk to us how they want to talk to us. I’m just not going to put up with that anymore.”
Raiola wishes he could give some fans his home address.
“I’d do that, but you can’t,” he said. “Nobody plays with fists. Everybody wants to play with metal.”

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

Man, there's not much happening this week is there? Only interesting games are
NO @ CHI - New Orleans hangin in
TB @ ATL - I want to say Atlanta, but I've only seen each team once this year, so what do I know
MIN @ ARI - I think Arizona has enough steam pre-playoff to win a few more?
PIT @ BAL - Probably the best game this week, but I like defense. Stillers
NYG @ DAL - Giants have got to rebound right?

so my bf (a vikings fan) just said the same thing but dude, at least the teams in the western conferences have HAD winning seasons within the last 700 years; i mean last year, sd was a "super bowl contender" within certain asinine sportswriter circles, and san francisco was expected to be better this year and appears to be turning around. detroit...i mean jesus god.

i'm not even thinking of it in terms of downgrading the nfc north's worth, just in fact that they should just not play those games and all teams have like two free wins now.

at least the teams in the western conferences have HAD winning seasons within the last 700 years

This is true...I guess it just gets at the true talent gap between DET and StL or something and how great that really is. Is playing detroit twice as record-inflating as getting to play SEA and StL 4 times--sure both those teams are better than Detroit but the conference as a whole may suck harder.

And yeah I have no idea what happened with SD and Denver this year. I'd never call the Bolts a contender but I expected competence.

vampire baseball (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

I still think San Diego is better than Denver, but them's the breaks.

NO @ CHI - Who knows with the Saints? Chi-town
TB @ ATL - The Falcons are the most improved team in the NFL; however, Tampa usually wins when they need it. Bays
SF @ MIA - The Fins, though SF makes it close. Miami
SEA @ STL - Send both teams to the MAC! Hawks
BUF @ NYJ - Jets stop the slide by beating a crumbling Buffalo team. The Farves
SD @ KC - Battle of the coaching genius's!! Bolthrowers
WAS @ CIN - Return of the Bungles... Reds
TEN @ HOU - Tennessee in a walk. Tits
GB @ JAC - I knew Garrard would throw a butt load of interceptions this year. But what's happened to Jacksonville's defense and running game? Pack
DET @ IND - 0-16 is very doable. Peytons
MIN @ ARI - I can't figure out Minny. Peterson's great, but he's dropping a lot of balls. Not sold on either quarterback. Zona can score, but can't stop anyone, plus every time I pick them they tank. What the hell, Cards.
PIT @ BAL - This will be 3-3 until the last minute of the game, then either a Deshea Townsend or Ed Reed interception will decide it. Rofflesburgers
DEN @ CAR - Carolina's running game won't be stopped by Denver. Pants
NE @ OAK - NE in a walk.
NYG @ DAL - Please humiliate and crush the Cowboys. Giants
CLE @ PHI - Waiting for Marty. Iggles

leavethecapital, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

not sure the redskins have sunk low enough to lose

oh, they might. the meltdown right now is truly epic. it was all cool until maybe the detroit game, and once things started going badly for the offense, zorn really screwed up by not adjusting & not taking responsibility for the problems. portis is ***extremely*** pissed off & prob speaks for a lot of the players. disaster. either they miraculously straighten things out after it's all been aired (unlikely) otherwise the team might not win another game.

i have so much rage about this season, guys. i don't even know who i should be mad at. toronto, maybe?

i am mad at tony romo

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

xpost: norv turner pretty much *exact* same situation record-wise; was let go this week of the season. if it plays out similarly again (or after the season).. who the hell is going to risk destroying their career by coaching in washington? nobody else wanted the job last year.

i hope the bad economy takes down dan snyder & someone competent will buy the team

schef what did tony romo do? i have no complaints about his level of play last week.

I DON'T MIND THE NFL (daria-g), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

how are the ravens going to beat the steelers w/rookie QB trying to deal with pittsburgh defense?

I DON'T MIND THE NFL (daria-g), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

LeRon McClain and an even better defense leading to a nice, boring 3-2 victory.

josephcharles, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

i feel that:

steelers don't get enough pressure on the qb when they rush four
steelers exhibited zero running game at home this past week against a worse d than baltimore's
steelers offensive line is a serious vulnerability
hines ward m.i.a. vs cowboys
ravens are on a roll and at home

i'll admit to being a pessimist, though. i pretty much gave up when they got stuffed on that fourth-and-goal

mookieproof, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 23:47 (sixteen years ago)

the steelers will step up and win imo - just feels like another game last week where the steelers don't play really well but they make the other team play worse

you brought me home to this funky house (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

I claimed earlier in the season that the Ravens would implode when they had to face the NFC East in the second half of the season with a rookie QB and coach . The number of predictions I've been wrong on this year would fill "Refrigerator" Perry's hollowed out corpse. Ravens might prevail but I'll be damned if the sandlot Steelers can't scrap out a win if the weather gets bad. IOW Jordan OTM. And because I hate this season so much I am looking forward to watching it on the TV.

Who is running the Detroit Lions? Rod Marinelli? Martin Mayhew? The Ford family?

How about Matt Millen?

Wait a minute -- didn't he get fired?

Maybe he did and maybe he didn't, depending upon who you are willing to believe. Two different National Football League sources -- one of them close to the Fords -- insist that the Millen firing earlier this season was just a ploy to appease angry fans of the 0-13 Lions and that Millen is still calling the shots and on the club's payroll as a consultant.

One NFL scout acknowledged that this rumour is making the rounds through the league and that while he couldn't absolutely confirm it, it wouldn't be shocking news to many in the football world.

"It wouldn't surprise me at all," he said. Added another NFL personnel type: "Whoever is calling the shots, they're doing a terrible job at it."

NO @ CHI - I've got to go with the Bears at home. If Chicago cannot pick off dome teams off in December, they don't deserve to play out doors (somewhat now).
TB @ ATL - This should be a good game. I'm pulling for the Falcons.
SF @ MIA - I'd think the Dolphins at home, but I could see it being a decent game.
SEA @ STL - Fugly bowl...who knows
BUF @ NYJ - I think the Jets have suffered enough and will pull it together to make Buffalo fans suffer some more.
SD @ KC - SD should win.
WAS @ CIN - It should be pretty easy for the Redskins to win, as playing the Bengals is like boxing a guy with one arm. I would believe it if Washington comes in flat and stupid and gets a tie.
TEN @ HOU - The Titans should win, but I could see Houston maybe pulling a surprise.
GB @ JAC - Boy this is a matchup of two clubs that completely lost their way. It will probably be close, but I will go with the Packers.
DET @ IND - The Colts better win, but they have been playing kind of ugly most of the year, so maybe it will be closer than expected.
MIN @ ARI - It probably comes down to turnovers, if Warner chucks up some interceptions, it will swing to the Viks, if not the Cards should win.
PIT @ BAL - Steelers in a close game.
DEN @ CAR - Panthers can run all over teams and that is not good as Denver cannot stop the run for jack.
NE @ OAK - Pats
NYG @ DAL - Giants, but it will be close
CLE @ PHI - The Eagles will win out and make the playoffs.

lol

According to multiple sources within the Dallas Cowboys, there is an emerging internal conflict involving three of the team's highest-profile stars.

As the preseason Super Bowl favorites struggle in the final month of the season to simply make the playoffs, wide receiver Terrell Owens has expressed resentment toward Tony Romo, apparently jealous of the quarterback's relationship with tight end Jason Witten.

Owens feels that Romo and Witten -- close friends and road roommates who came to Dallas in the same offseason -- hold private meetings in which they create plays the two will use in upcoming games without including Owens in the conversations, according to a source who speaks regularly with Owens' teammates. Owens believes these discussions have worked to his detriment as Romo seeks to deliver the ball to Witten regardless of whether Owens is open.

Tony Romo and Jason Witten are good friends.

Romo also thinks Witten is great at his job.

"Jason Witten is the absolute perfect tight end," Romo said. "He is just really an easy guy to play with."

I voted for all these Redskins (except Suisham, there is no way I voted for him). I hope London Fletcher gets in.
Far as I know fan voting is only 1/3 of what factors in..? One consolation re: total dysfunction @ Washington right now is that Dallas is probably worse.

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/12/practice-report-the-valley-ranch-circus.html

Most of the Cowboys are preparing for Sunday's game in frigid Pittsburgh by practicing in the team's Valley Ranch indoor facility. A handful of old dudes -- T.O., Marc Colombo, Flozell Adams, Greg Ellis and Zach Thomas -- were given a veteran's day off by Wade Phillips. (Didn't they have four of the previous five days off?)

It's quite a scene inside the bubble. A whole bunch of corporate types had invaded one sideline. A DJ was cranking out tunes on the other sideline, leading rookie TE Martellus Bennett to hop on his feet and dance during stretching drills.

At least Pacman Jones appeared to be taking things seriously. He seemed very focused while wearing a pair of Homer Simpson pajama pants under his shorts. ("I'm so smart," the writing on the pants read.)

This is just classic stuff, my personal favorite being how far Wade Philips has managed to get his head into his ass. Teams really need to start treating T.O. as a one-year rental since that is roughly his max period of contentment.

System (call all destroyer), Friday, 12 December 2008 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

i think t.o.'s been feeling insecure ever since they picked up roy williams and now he's trying to get roy onto his side and force the issue so they'll throw him the damn ball more and keep his stats nice and pretty. though i think the 'boys would be served by opening it up like they did last season, this year they just look soft.

btw this was inevitable - jones got too greedy. i think he thought since t.o. wasn't a HUGE problem that he could bring in pacman and bring in roy williams (no problems, but another seemingly random person), but it is about time that t.o. starts becoming unbearable so him turning shit out from the inside should be no surprise. i don't see how these guys come together well enough to really make a run in the playoffs (add the jones/barber tiff to this list). i could see t.o. just totally not giving a crap in a playoff game just to make a point, especially if they got down like 10 points or something

The rift between Dallas Cowboys stars Terrell Owens, Tony Romo and Jason Witten is wider than just those three players, a source inside the team's locker room told ESPN's Ed Werder on Friday.

The source told Werder that the majority of defensive players on the team support Owens' contention that Romo is overly reliant on Jason Witten and often throws into coverage trying to get him the ball while ignoring Owens in situation where he could make a play.

One starting player told Werder that "We are not together as a team, and that includes the coaches."

Dallas defensive back Terence Newman told ESPN's First Take on Friday that reports of a rift are blown out of proportion. Newman said that Owens hadn't said a bad word to anyone, and that, as a defensive player, he'd like Owens to get the ball more.

While the Dallas Cowboys were trying to downplay a possible rift between Terrell Owens and Jason Witten, the two nearly came to blows on Friday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram first reported Saturday.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen, according to team sources, confirmed an incident occurred at the Cowboys training facility when Witten tried to engage Owens in a conversation about a pass route. Owens told Witten to stay away from him and called him a name. The two exchanged words before being separated.

Both players acted as if everything was fine when the media was allowed in the locker room, according to the Star-Telegram. But Owens was still upset.

if redskins message board reliable sources are credible: massive disconnect & frustration from the players re: zorn, who won't adjust anything he is doing & basically convinced his way is the right way.. players confronted him after 2nd dallas game saying WTF, this isn't working, and he doesn't get it. and also not great at communicating (either that or not sure what he's trying to do) so in practice he's like OK chip block this guy & then go out on your route, and player is like OK coach no prob, does that & zorn is like WTF r u doin. that's pretty much what is going on. granted they need other wideouts besides moss (rookies are.. rookies), campbell isn't playing great, offensive line getting old, but.. every team has its weak points.

snyder probably fired him already. (i wish someone could fire snyder.)

what happened to the arizona super cardinals today?

The Cardinals are the oldest professional American football club in the United States.[2][1][3] This should not be confused with the longest original city team (the Green Bay Packers) because the team known now as the Arizona Cardinals was originally formed in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago. The club was then called the Racine Normals since they were originally located in Normal Park on Chicago's Racine Avenue (not Racine, Wisconsin, as mistaken in the notes from an early APFA meeting). They then changed their name to the Racine Cardinals after they started wearing dark reddish uniforms, inherited from the collegiate Chicago Maroons. This hand-me-down, low-budget situation would prove to be a good metaphor for the team's chronology.

soup kitchen electro (omar little), Monday, 15 December 2008 02:36 (sixteen years ago)

that was one of those conspiracy plays just now, where he threw to witten. they would've had the first down if he got the ball to t.o.

the swedish schefter (daria-g), Monday, 15 December 2008 02:37 (sixteen years ago)

by the way, i turned on NFL today on fox before i left the house today, and they started by explaining how dallas drama was like a bunch of teenagers, where romo was like witten is my BFF and owens is like OMG, and then they were saying we're cool XOXOXO (this is actually what they said). then for no reason they played the raiders 80's locker room rap w/howie long and long tried to laugh it off as his face turned beet red

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 December 2008 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

Sad that a well-coached D like the Gints never adjusted to the shotgun-delay run. That play has been killing a lot of teams this year.

it's so dallas can get into the playoffs and lose in the 1st round again.

the swedish schefter (daria-g), Monday, 15 December 2008 04:27 (sixteen years ago)

it's not the loss of plax as a player, it's the enormous awful distraction its obviously become -- i mean pierce has looked shitty both games since this happened.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 December 2008 04:40 (sixteen years ago)

the ref (ed hochuli ha ha) (call all destroyer), Monday, 15 December 2008 04:51 (sixteen years ago)

my biggest lesson of this nfl season has nothing to do with X's and O's, it is that i totally get what's happening to a guy like nnamdi asomugha who is really good at his job & has to work for a crapshit badly-managed organization where real talent gets chewed up and spit out, and the people that hang around for years adapt by just not caring

the swedish schefter (daria-g), Monday, 15 December 2008 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ Very nicely put.

josephcharles, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 06:15 (sixteen years ago)

i'll take today's game. did a great job of moving the ball and played great defense. we didn't really do enough in the red zone but hopefully it'll be better next week...getting in a rhythm is more important to me.
but lol was anyone surprised by the pick at the end of the half? i'm telling you guys - it happens EVERY GAME.

k3vin k., Tuesday, 16 December 2008 06:19 (sixteen years ago)

and i loved reid's face after desean jackson threw that interception. we had the same expression actually...i wasn't really that pissed abt it, i thought it was kinda funny

k3vin k., Tuesday, 16 December 2008 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

wish i had a pic of that

k3vin k., Tuesday, 16 December 2008 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha i had just been thinking, "kornheiser has been less annoying tonight" and then he went off on his "philly fans are like this, andy reid is like that" pontification and i was like, "oh."

from espn regarding paul pierces minor knee injury last nite:

In fact, he felt good enough to take pictures in the locker room with Olympian Michael Phelps (who was there with Jared from Subway) after the game. Rivers also said trainer Eddie Lacerte told him he thought Pierce would be OK, but that they would do more tests on Tuesday.

Belichick is 2-4 when challenging calls this season after going 0-2 in Oakland. Yesterday, he shared his thought process on both challenges.

The first came early in the first quarter when Belichick believed the Raiders had 12 defenders on the field. He explained that the mistake came when he saw Oakland send in two defenders while subtracting just one before a Kevin Faulk 1-yard run.

That would have given the Raiders 12 men. But Belichick's eyes weren't deceiving him; the Raiders had played the prior snap with just 10 defenders.

the swedish schefter (daria-g), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

That arguably should be posted in the LOL @ Oakland thread.

why did he even challenge? what a dick, they're the raiders, just let them do whatever, they aren't going to win.

The Raiders were very whiny about the "tuck rule" call, and Bill is a grudge holder.

belichick is never one to pass up the opportunity to be a dick

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

Also, Shanahan and Norv both made similar dick moves against the Raiders this year. Norv's was especially awesome.

It may not come as a surprise that many successful NFL coaches are dicks.

i am dick but i am not a successful nfl coach that is where your metaphor breaks down

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

Someone needs to Venn diagram this shit.

the ref (ed hochuli ha ha) (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

If some does a Venn diagram then you can be sure Belichick will challenge it and we're back to square one, not a place I want to be I can assure you.
