I dunno about this ATL/AZ game. Can I trust a rookie QB on the road? tossup for me but I might lean AZ if they get some points in the spread.
SD/IND is the momentum bowl but I'll be damned if SD doesn't pull off the upset at home.
Baltimore should demolish Miami.
I'll pick Philly.
could very well be a sweep by the visiting teams this weekend

IND over SD though it will be close.
MIA over BAL by a td, i predict BIG THINGS for ricky williams in this one.
PHI over MIN but there will be plenty of fuckups in this game and it will be unwatchable.

― TOMBOT, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 05:49 (sixteen years ago)
Falcons over Cardinals - I'll take the rookie QB being able to hand off to Michael the Burner Turner. Even in a cruddy game last week, Ryan made some big throws. C'mon Atlanta is going to ARIZONA...that's like going on a long weekend with the wife, not an incursion into Cambodia.
Indy over SD - I'll be pissed if the Colts come out and do all of the dumb sxxt they have done two of the last three times they faced the Chargers. SD intercepted Manning like six times in one game and it still took AV to bonk the kick to get beat. LT definitely looked to be running better against the Broncos, it looks like he can cut better now. This isn't logic, I just have the team I want to win. I figure Dallas Clark might be a key dude for Indy.
Miami & B-more - I might have to think on this one for a day. I think this is the tightest and hard to figure match-up. Miami is fun to watch and I have to agree with Simms assessment in the last game that Ricky Williams has not lost any speed. I'm sure it will be Ray Ray vs. Porter doing a bunch of jawing the whole game. I'm kind of leaning Miami, just as Pennington has to be a bit of an edge on Flacco. I could see this one as a 13-10 kind of matchup. Special teams and turnovers will probably be pretty crucial in this game, as I would figure both offenses might get bogged down a bit.
Philly over Minnesota - Whose fans are more morose? Even with the Philly fan rep, I got a feeling this is a more tight call than you might figure. I dated a girl whose family was all from Minnesota, those folks are all crazy on hockey and the Vikings. They are a morose bunch to begin with and their football team has only added to the winters of discontent. The Vikings are made to break a fans heart, their QBs are not that dependable, they are a bit banged up and their coach seems real distant. On the other hand, the Eagles are a love hate kind of club. Philly fans like to blow McNabb and Andy Reid a bunch of static, but I think they really like the dude until he pisses them off. They can't hate Andy Reid, the dude looks like one of the fans. Look at Andy Reid in that Cowboy's game, the dude looks like he had polished off a twelver the night before woke up hung over with a three day beard with sausage gravy all down his jacket, then they went out and gave an epic asskicking to the Cowboys. Whatever happens this next week, that Dallas destruction will go down like the Michael Irvin standing ovation when he went of on a stretcher at the Vet in the lore between the two clubs. Philly has won a lot of playoff games, a lot...give them that with Andy Reid, even if they never got the big one. I have to think Philly's Defense will completely confuse Jackson into mistakes. It could give up a big one to Peterson, but I don't see Minnesota having enough offense to put Philly on their back foot and get them into bad play calling. I'm sure Childress will really study that Redskins game from two weeks ago to try and put up a game plan, but I don't think it will be enough.
Criminy...I got three road dogs picked, I must be off, then again the divisions are kind of screwy this year.

― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 07:20 (sixteen years ago)
Atlanta vs. Arizona - Ryan on the road against what is basically a really shitty defensive secondary. Michael Turner against a poor run defense, I'm thinking the Falcons, especially if they can get any kind of pressure on Warner.
Indianapolis vs. San Diego - I can't figure out San Diego. They looked good against the Broncos, but the Broncos' defense is putrid. If it's close and a minute to go, Indie takes it.
Baltimore vs. Miami - The Ravens look downright scary, so nevermore Miami.
Philadelphia vs. Minnesota - I'm not sold on Tavarvis Jackson either, putting up huge numbers on crap teams doesn't mean you've figured it out, it just means you've played crap teams. I'm thinking Flying Dawkins makes Jackson cry; add a few Peterson fumbles and it could get ridiculous.

In greater detail:
Atlanta over Arizona: It is possible that Arizona has simply been coasting for the last few weeks, and they do benefit from playing at home. Kurt Warner has been there before, and I guess that helps. Arizona has some guys on defense who can really play, especially Dansby. But they don't have a guy with more than 5 sacks, don't have a guy with more than 4 INTs, their PPG allowed is down there with the Kansas Citys and Denvers of the world. They do force a lot of fumbles, which is the only thing they do well on defense, arguably. On offense, their running game has been atrocious from week 10-17. Tim Hightower hasn't done anything over that period. Kurt Warner's two good performances down the stretch were against Seattle and St. Louis. The team's two best wins were against Miami and Dallas, and the Miami win was before Miami really started to gel in my opinion.
Atlanta has five losses. Three were road games within the division. The other two were Philly and Denver, before Denver started to self-destruct. They have a good quarterback (16 TDs to 11 INTs doesn't sound like a world-beater to me, at least not yet), one great running back and an excellent backup. Atlanta's defense is mediocre, but I assume they will dare Arizona to run the ball, and I don't think Arizona is up to the task. Atlanta 27, Arizona 10
Baltimore vs. Miami: Baltimore is straight up gangsta. Every time I watch their defense I get a little scared. Baltimore has five losses, and all of them were to genuine Super Bowl contenders. Three of those games were very close. Baltimore beat Miami pretty handily early in the season, although that was arguably before Miami became the team they are now. But Baltimore completely shut down the Miami run game, and if you can do that, I don't think Pennington is good enough to make up for that. Baltimore 20, Miami 13
Minnesota vs. Philly: Here's what Donovan McNabb has done since week 11... played like shit against Cincy, played like shit against Baltimore, beat the shit out of Arizona, played a solid game against the Giants despite Westbrook doing most of the work, beat the woeful Browns, played like garbage against Washington, and then singlehandedly destroyed Dallas until Dallas decided to destroy themselves. The perceived wisdom is that he's been better since he's been benched, but all he's really done is cut down on mistakes. He's been erratic all season. Westbrook has played well lately, but let's not forget that he didn't even rush for 1000 yards this year. He didn't rush for ten touchdowns, and this is in one of his most productive seasons in ages!
Adrian Peterson has been a beast this year, but yet he has as many rushing TDs as Tim Hightower or Le'Ron McClain or Jonathan Stewart. He leads the league in fumbles and fumbles lost. If he can't get into the endzone, it will be up to Tavaris Jackson to finish, and that is asking a lot of a very erratic quarterback. As down as I may be on McNabb, I can't shake the fact that Jackson is way worse. Last week they struggled to beat the Giants' second unit. I originally picked Minnesota by virtue of their being at home, but I amend that to say Philly 24, Minny 20.
San Diego vs. Indy: After scraping out a win against Pittsburgh in week 12, the Colts barely beat San Diego before San Diego got their shit together, beat the Sage Rosenfels by 6, barely beat Cleveland, beat up on Cincy, were neck and neck with Detroit until they pulled away late, struggled to beat Jacksonville, and let Jim Sorgi beat up on Tennessee's backups. So you will pardon me if I'm less than impressed? Peyton Manning has been great, almost enough to make up for the terrible running game (what happened to Addai?). They have three good receivers and also Marvin Harrison. On defense, they are great against the pass, which is the Chargers strength.
San Diego whooped up on Denver, but only a complete meltdown allowed them to beat Kansas City in Week 16. Then again, all of their losses came against quality opponents, and their three home losses were close games against very good teams (Carolina, Indy, Atlanta). Their victory over Tampa Bay is tainted by Tampa Bay losing to Oakland in the following week, and beating Denver is so easy, a Buffalo could do it. So I'm not exactly over the moon yet. But they're at home, healthy, and always play well against Indy. I will somewhat optimistically say San Diego 33, Indy 27.

polyphonic, re: eagles, mcnabb cutting down on his mistakes is EXACTLY what needed/needs to happen. when he doesnt make mistakes, i'll take him over about everyone but a select few. adn westbrook really hasnt played all that well of late tbch. i haven't checked his stats, but ive watched just about every play, and it seems to me the majority of his rushes have been of the 2-4 yard variety...he hasnt hit the hole as well as he usually does. he has, however, had some really really big and clutch breaks for like 30+ off screens and passes and stuff. re: his stats being down for the year tho, youve gotta remember he was either injured or playing hurt for about a third of the season.

Westbrook is always hurt, what else is new. I agree with you about his rushes mostly being short, though.

it IS weird how a team can be 4-12 and still be in the playoffs, like the chargers, yet another team can be 16-0 and be out of it.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 06:34 (sixteen years ago)
OPINIONS 4 U
cards - falcons
i like the falcons here but im wary of them - i think the cards passing game could get hot (@ home) and kind of burn them out. like if the game goes atl fg-az td-atl punt-az td/fg does ryan start to press? i guess the falcons have seen the saints twice but if memory serves, those games were pretty close. i think the cards not being to run AT ALL eventually dooms them but ive started to come around to the idea of this one being a bit of a toss-up
eagles - vikes
lol tavaris right? yeah, i think that's eventually the name of the game. i can't imagine a vikings win not becoming contingent on jackson leading them down the field at some point and based upon all the types of shit that the eagles did to romo last week i can't imagine what jackson will be like when he's facing some hot off the grill jim johnson shit
fins - ravens
no hom(o)er but i think the fins have a really good shot at this. idk if people realize this but this is like a kind of immovable object vs unstoppable force type game w/ the dolphins having a historically low turnover number and the ravens having reed and co. i think if the fins can manage to not turn the ball over (or only once) and **lol sportswriter alert** make flacco beat them consistently on long drives then this could be really close. im concerned about the fact that the ravens have been able to stretch the field really well lately w/ clayton but the dolphins can pop off some big plays themselves. all that said i do think the fins were gifted an easy schedule and a hurt brady and if you put a gun to my head i'd pick the ravens
chargers - colts
i guess the chargers are on a roll and all but idk im starting to buy into the idea that peyton is just single handedly willing the colts to consistent victories. so i dont really know about this game - my head tells me that the chargers should eventually out last them as the superior team in terms of talent but my heart head also tells me that i could see peyton doing a good job controlling the ball and eventually just making sure that the colts win. i think the chargers do have too much though - i think rivers is a douche but he's a really really good qb with lots of talent around him and they are "peaking at the right time" so i'd say bolts

the nfl network has made a choice to begin 2009 by showing all the Vikings "Lost Rings" episodes of America's Game. I don't know what this means in the big picture but since it is all of a sudden 2009* I do feel a great deal of unacceptable sympathy for the vikes

I am not sure if Jamal Anderson is angry that Antrel Rolle just did the Dirty Bird celebration after recovering an ATL fumble, or happy that someone out there is still doing the Dirty Bird.

I have to say, not having Brett Favre on my team anymore has made it much easier to be annoyed with TV guys talking about Brett Favre. Bob Costas went through like five minutes of recapping AZ-ATL and SD-IND, made a gay Star Wars (not Trek) reference about the Steve Spock catch, seemed pleased with himself, and then turned to Peter King and was all, "So, what about the Gunslinger?" WTF.

― Fursona (real life tauren ^_^) (cankles), Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:10 (sixteen years ago)
Basically the Chargers have been wildly unlucky this whole game so it is entirely probable that they will lose the coin toss and then Antonio Cromartie will stare at the sideline again or something.

― cindy㋡bert (brownie), Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:11 (sixteen years ago)
I do kind of love that before the FG--the do or die moment for the whole season--the Chargers PA tried to get the crowd hyped by playing TI's "Whatever You Like". WTF?
Also on the prior Colts possession they tried to hype up by playing "Firestarter", which is probably still effective in SD.
― C-L, Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:13 (sixteen years ago)
addai you fucknut
― Fursona (real life tauren ^_^) (cankles), Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:16 (sixteen years ago)
I did not know that happened when a team with no timeouts had an injury.
― C-L, Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:16 (sixteen years ago)
he really needed to juke for 3 extra yards in that situation
you get a 4th injury timeout, 5th = 5 yard penalty
I know it is basically impossible because teams play for FGs instead of TDs in overtime, but I would kill to see an NFL OT go into multiple quarters.
― C-L, Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:19 (sixteen years ago)

The only thing keeping me from thinking SD has replaced Denver as the best system for RBs is that Turner is still awesome in Atlanta. But Tomlinson-Turner-Sproles is just ridiculous.

me: btw neil what did you think of millen's interview/studio bullshit today
LB: Man. Whenever I see Dave Wannstedt on TV, my internal mental reaction is basically like one long clip of the cat from Pet Sematary hissing all demonic-like witht he glowing eyes and shit. I can only imagine Neil's reaction to Matt Millen must be like that times a factor of ten.
neil: I muted it. Fuck that guy. Any sounds coming out of his blowhole would have just made me react like a werewolf on pcp. I wish the set would have collapsed on him and then a bunch of wolves or something would have wandered in, raped his corpse and then eaten him.

I feel conflicted, because I don't feel like the Chargers deserve to be in the playoffs, even though I honestly think they are more talented than many other teams in the playoffs. But there are so many guys on the team who I love who played well -- Gregory, Weddle, Williams, Dobbins, Cooper, Goff, Anthony Waters, Naanee, Dielman, Hester, Bennett, Jammer, Osgood ... all of these dudes played mistake-free, impact football. When you get that kind of performance from your role players, you can overcome a horrible Rivers pass, a crucial Sproles fumble, etc.
Also, it is amazing to beat the Colts when the Colts are arguably at full strength. They got every break, and yet the Chargers just outplayed them. I think it would be hard to argue that the Colts are the better team. After all: the Chargers should have won the earlier Colts game this year, but Rivers blew it at the end.
Also, the team I'm most frightened of among the remaining AFC teams is the Baltimore Ravens, and if we play them, we play them at home.

there is some background information re: gloating over Indy losing because of defensive penalties. goes back to the pats-colts afc title game in 2004 when NE basically beat up their receivers, and, subsequently, colts owner polian pushing NFL re: making those calls -
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/19/sports/football/19colts.html
The National Football League eventually did, with Polian’s prodding. The following off-season, the league issued a point of emphasis edict from the competition committee about how defensive holding and illegal contact would be officiated. Since then, defenders have had to be more careful about touching receivers beyond the first 5 yards of a play. How important has that rule become? After the Colts defeated the Baltimore Ravens, 15-6, last week in a second-round game notable for an absence of touchdowns, Polian expressed concern on the Colts’ Web site that downfield contact was being overlooked.
of course, the face mask was not possible to overlook.

RIvers is kind of fascinating because he seems like such a loudmouth d-bag generally, except that he is so quietly efficient playing quarterback. It is not shocking or anything that a guy who is really good at being quarterback would be essentially a giant date-rapey frat dude kind of guy but sometimes he almost seems like Ryan Leaf except that he is much much better at football, and thus less likely to fuck up and be a dick about it.
I dunno.

Mike Scifres (born October 8, 1980 in Metairie, Louisiana) is a punter for the San Diego Chargers. He was selected with the 14th pick of the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Western Illinois University. He has twice been an alternate for the Pro Bowl, most recently as a 1st Alternate for the 2007 Pro Bowl ahead of Shane Lechler. He hit a 66-yard punt in the 2008 divisional playoff game versus the Indianapolis Colts in the Colts' victory. In the Chargers' 2009 playoff game versus the Colts, Scifres kicked a 67-yard punt, as well as two punts inside the ten-yard line. He is also known as the only active NFL player with braces.

"I’ve always felt inclined to support gay rights. It‘s just seemed like the right thing to do."
But when engaged in debate with numerous teammates on the topic, I would provide simple, surface justifications for gay rights thus eliciting such remarks like “they shouldn’t marry because they can’t reproduce,” or “do you want gay guys going into the bathroom with your daughter?" or (my personal favorite), “yeah, well you’re a fag.”

“Che” — I absolutely love it when a director just goes way off the reservation to make a film with absolutely no commercial potential. Sometimes you get “Southland Tales,” sometimes you get “Apocalypse Now.” I trust Steven Soderbergh more than almost any other director working, so if he feels he has to make a four-hour film about a Socialist revolutionary, then I’m there.

“In Bruges” — It is in Bruges where two British hit men (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) spend a few days to cool off after they knock off a priest back in London. And oh how interesting those few days turn out to be! Good luck finding a darker, brasher or more affecting comedy in 2008. There are some lines in this film that will have you shaking your head and laughing hysterically at the same time. Yet, this movie is not all funny business as it touches on grander themes such as human guilt.

I'll say one thing, the Chargers/Colts matchups have always been interesting. There has been some odd plays in every one.
I still think SD biggest problem is whoever is calling the plays. I think the Chargers would have rolled if they would have just run the ball more often. I know LT was unavailable, but they were chewing up Indy on the ground and having middling luck with the pass.

oh hey I have to explain my pats friend conspiracy theory real quick it's lol- bascially the NFL moved the Jets/Dolphins game to 4 so that the Jets would have nothing to play for after the Ravens beat JAX (at 1pm) for the final playoff spot thus dooming the pats
― cindy㋡bert (brownie), Sunday, 4 January 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)
it was all done with malice aforethought btw
thing is tho the jets never had anything to play for in the 1st place cause theyre the jets that what this theory doesnt take into consideration

LOL did they miss that ravens/jags played at 4? i did read other conspiracy theory though, that jets got moved so mangini would throw the game to screw over the pats, or was it that pats/bills got bumped to 1pm so jets would think they had nothing to play for, assuming ravens would win

Philly's Andy Reid will be battling former assistant Brad Childress on Sunday in a matchup Peter King described as "teacher vs. pupil." Teacher versus pupil???? That explains everything! Do you think Reid tutored Childress in classes like "Screwing Up a Two-Minute Drill," "Hanging Your QB Out to Dry," "Dumb and Possibly Damaging Field-Goal Attempts," "Idiotic Short-Yardage Calls," "Special Teams Collapses," "How To Blow Your Challenges," "Leaving Yourself With No Timeouts" and "How To Remain Calm As You're Getting Booed By Your Own Fans"?

a) it is not the two minute warning yet so there is no booth reviewb) he said this while being shown a clip of peterson's entire lower half being splayed on the field, sat upon by another eagle, when dawkins speared the dude's head
aikman just kind of sighed and they went to commercial but i really wish he'd just punch buck.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Sunday, 4 January 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)
i mean i guess it is theoretically possible that peterson does not have a lower half, and therefore he is only down if his shoulders and elbows are on the ground, because he has no knees, but i feel this would hinder his running game a little, joe.
― the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Sunday, 4 January 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

Is it me or have all of the commercials shown good singers so far? Like the only one who was kind of iffy was the chick in the bikini and even she got a golden ticket.
