Fox's McCarver, Buck, Aikman Got US Marshals Escort From Games
By Zachary Roth - January 12, 2009, 12:52PM

Baseball may be our national pastime -- and football our real national game -- but that doesn't mean taxpayers should be paying to make it easier for Fox Sports' announcer team to get away from the stadium more easily.

A new report by the Justice Department's inspector general finds that a lawyer for the U.S. Marshals Service arranged for the Marshals Service to provide a private escort for the limousines of Fox's star broadcasters, Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, after two World Series games at Fenway Park in 2007.

The report also found that the lawyer, Joseph Band, had arranged for a US Marshals escort for Buck and colleague Troy Aikman, the former Cowboys star, after a January 2008 NFL playoff game in Tampa.

Band was working as a paid statistician for Fox Sports at the time.

Eagles/Cards: This has to be one of the most bizarre championship games in recent memory. My question is whether or not the Cards defense is going to continue to show up and play really well. If they do Philadelphia is going to have a lot of trouble moving the ball (their drive charts from the playoffs are pretty horrifying) and I like the Cards at home.

Steelers/Ravens: As much as I hate to admit it, the Steelers are pretty clearly a better team and should win at home.

the ref (ed hochuli ha ha) (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

I do not know why, but I want to see the Cardinals and the Ravens play in the Super Bowl. Maybe just for the guarantee that either Matt Leinart or Kyle Boller will be able to call themselves Super Bowl Champions.

C-L, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

horseshoe, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

So my brother, who lives down the block from me in NY, had his Eagles floor mat stolen from in front of his apartment (after the Giants game). So he wrote a letter on his front door. It's since been taken down (and his mat was recovered by the super), so I don't have the exact quote. But at one point it goes, "Whoever stole my mat; I know, it is very sad losing a game. And you were probably very frustrated. So please return it. I'll even concede that the Giants are a better team than the Eagles, even though we beat your team's ass 23-11. Bitch."

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 23:00 (sixteen years ago)

dude, i don't support the kind of fans who think it's totally cool to key a car with another teams' bumper sticker or some shit, but your brother sounds dumber than a bag of hammers doing shit like that. i didn't fly a giants flag over my apt in dc, right?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

no offense or anything, just sayin'!! certain things come with the territory, like having your stickers defaced or rugs stolen in enemy territory, and you just take that without putting up little man-ramp truck notes on your door about it.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know. Sure you've got to expect it. But it's still pretty bitch-move to steal someone's floor mat.

I once returned to a house I shared to find that the refrigerator had inadvertantly been left open and the bathroom REEKED of cigarette smoke. Once I determined that there hadn't been a theft or break-in, I left the following note:

"(Roommates),

So, I got back on Monday, and found that the fridge had burned out and all the food had spoiled. Thats why it still smells in here. Also, the back bathroom smells a lot like cigarette smoke, but it wasn't me - it was like that when I got home. I've called the landlord, and he's coming out with a new fridge in a few days. I'll see you when I get home. Hope this is all clearly explained.

(B.L.A.M.)"

I got LAID into when I got home. They called me the passive-aggressive one, and one of my roommate's father - the dude who had stunk up the bathroom with cigarette stank - called me a "selfish, stuck up asshole who could go to hell."

If this were now, I would have laid the old fucker out. As it was, I moved out two weeks later. So glad I don't live THERE anymore.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 15 January 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

To clarify - I had cleaned out the fridge of all rotten food, and had done my best to make it not stink. I was the only smoker in the house, too, so I wanted to make sure they didn't think it had been me smoking in the house while they had been out of town.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 15 January 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't know. Dude was a freak show in his own right. Had been married to my roommate's mother, then discovered he was bi-sexual, and they got divorced. He then proceeded to go through a series of relationships with students of his - both men and women - until the administration put him on "sabbatical." Last I had heard, he had a kid with another woman, and had left her, too, after discovering he was bisexual. Again.

When I was in religious high school, another student explained to me that McNabb couldn't win a Superbowl because he's a black QB. As a sensitive little liberal (and a huge Eagles fan) I called him an enormous racist and marched off. That said - it would be nice for McNabb to win a Superbowl if, for nothing else, to punch big fucking racists in the mouth.

Howie Long Only Pawn in Game of Truck Wars

Written by Matthew T. Sussman
Published January 13, 2009

Let me re-tell two commercials, if I may:

Commercial #1: Hall of Fame Raiders linebacker and noted flathead Howie Long witnesses an unnamed individual in the bed of a pickup truck. Said individual pulls down an extra step from the edge and gingerly climbs down to the ground as if to say "I'm on my period." The alpha male football player helps out his lesser equal by pointing out that he forgot to put his "little, uh, man step" back in its place. Consequently, the socially awkward and probably gay truck driver is put in his place. Howie Long shakes his head and walks back to his Chevrolet Silverado.

Commercial #2: In another separate incident, a man accidentally backs up into Long's truck. Long gets out, approaches the star struck driver, and notices the man's heated steering wheel. (They are easily distinguishable from unheated sheering wheels, because they are covered in glitter and unicorns.) Mr. Long then asks the man if he has a manicure. If the fender bender wasn't enough humiliation, having hands warmed by modern technology with trimmed cuticles is a real societal death knell. Long victoriously struts back to his Silverado, desperately careful not to trip over his own testicles.

(Side note: When Howie Long appears on FOX NFL Sunday, he wears eyeglasses, but he took them off for the commercial since eyeglasses were popularized by Elton John.)

First of all, brilliant move on Chevrolet's part. If your competitor's cars have features, just make fun of the people who buy those cars. It worked in fourth grade (remember who won the great Trapper Keeper War Of '92), and it still works today. I highly anticipate Chevy's next spokesperson, Vince Offer.

But in a larger perspective, these two truck commercials, among others for Ford, Dodge, and Toyota, have been airing almost on a loop during broadcasts of the NFL playoff games. DC Examiner's Rick Snider put it spiffily when he wrote, "All I know after watching 12 hours of football over the weekend is I want to drive a truck that earns Howie Long’s respect." (When one 9-win team is guaranteed to reach the Super Bowl, sometimes truck commercials are the only bridge we have to solid ground.) In fact, there have been a ton of truck commercials on TV this year, so many in fact that I'm sure one truck company will boast that their model has enough towing capacity to haul them all from 0 to 60 in eight seconds.

If I had to guess, this pickup truck war is a direct byproduct of our withdrawal from the previous election cycle, in which John McCain and Barack Obama slung it old school. Now that the election is over and certified, we still feel the need to have competing parties having a pissing contest. Who better to fill that role than manly men with manly trucks?

Eagles over Cardinals - Two playoff wins notwithstanding, I just cannot pick the Arizona Cardinals to go to the Superbowl. It is just way to unlikely. I think it is possible they will win, but the Eagles have won quite a few playoff games over the years. I've got to think that Philly's blitzing defense would be able to upset Kurt Warner's passing game.

haha!

my thing is, on paper there's really no way the eagles can lose this, but there's always the reid factor so idk. this is definately the best defense they've fielded in a CCG, and the best receiving corps to boot.

as for steelers ravens... there's so little difference between the teams that you might as well flip a coin. i tend to favor the steelers, they're at hmoe etc etc but who knows

I'm inclined to pick the Steelers, but I just like those individual players on the Ravens D so much. And at the rate Rofflesberger has been thowing int's, Ed Reed could end up winning this game for Bmore.

I'm also inclined to go Cards, just because I want them to go to the Superbowl for the first time ever.

Mordy, Sunday, 18 January 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

Steelers over Ravens - The Ravens are just an ugly team to watch. When your break out offensive threat is getting an interception, you are a very odd team. It will be close, but I could see Pittsburgh getting a lead and holding on. I just think if B-more gets down 10, I cannot see that rookie QB bringing them back. That being said, the Steelers have not had much luck at home in this very situation over the past decade or so. They only a wash as it seems everyone would rather tag on the Colts and Manning for losing playoff games, but Pittsburgh has been there pretty much every year and has not capitalized on their chances either. Shit it's hard.

If it weren't for his injury, I would totally be enraged over the end of that game.

Fuck. I hope he's alright.

"i mean yah it is a 'legal hit' i guess but i'm gettin kind of sick of safety killshots tbh"

Nah, safety killshots are a big part of the game. The Cards will see that on film and think twice about running rampant across the middle. I have no problem at all with that. Go watch tennis if you're sick of it.

Mcgahee is fine, btw.

Bill Magill, Monday, 19 January 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

The ESPN story called it a "helmet to helmet hit," but Clark was leading with his shoulder. Dude'll probably get scapegoated for a big fine.

I think we should make it our mission to establish this as his nickname.

It absolutely was helmet-to-helmet, they showed a slo-mo reverse angle that showed the point of Clark's helmet knocking McGahee's head back as the first point of contact before his shoulder came in and knocked his body flat.

Apples and oranges, though.
