CHICAGO—Less than 24 hours after a visit from Bears quarterback and Type 1 diabetes sufferer Jay Cutler, a group of 32 schoolchildren who shared his disease died Tuesday. "Their spirits were really high just before Mr. Cutler arrived, but literally the second he entered the room the kids just sort of closed off, and once he started talking about how poorly he was treated in Denver, they became sullen and quiet," said Erin Matthews, who until Tuesday ran a diabetes support group for children ages 8 to 14 at the downtown YMCA. "After I recovered from my shock, I was surprised that all the children died, seeing as diabetes isn't terminal and can be controlled with medication. However, considering how sickened they were by Mr. Cutler, well, it sort of makes sense. That the kids were able to live through the entire talk is a testament to their bravery." Since his professional football career began in 2006, Cutler has killed more than 3,000 disabled or sick children by taking time to speak to them.http://o.onionstatic.com/img/icons/terminator.gif

so was he being unfairly patronized in 10-11? or were ppl saying he was merely failing to achieve his potential ? or is he just hateful/risible for reasons that can't be gleaned from a quick skim of his wikipedia page
― nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)
you mean in this thread? he wasnt doing too great those years because he went from a team with good offense talent, to a team with bad, which i guess magnified his flaws. i think there's more widespread recognition after this past season that he's a really good player who's doing everything he can to win with some crummy players around him.
the reason people dont like him isnt really related to the quality of his play, hes just seen as sort of a goofy-goober-douche** who talks a lot of shit on the field. he also played at Vanderbilt which has a preppy/fratty rep, and i think thats followed him

I think people just hate the dude's face. He's just got an aloof smugness in his face which I think is more just how he looks that makes people hate him. It's kind of like how Jim Breuer just always looks stoned (even when not). People like the rah rah polical science types or the aw shucks I'm going to drink a six pack and shuck some oysters after the game then go huntin' or even physical freak gift of god types and the Cutler is just none of those.
Cutler isn't great, but he's got enough skills with what the Bears do usually do well, they should be able to hang with the superpower QB clubs. He's got to stay healthy too.
Let's see who is ahead...
The legends and soon to beRogersBreesBradyManning (bionic - probably still)
Big time winners (but sometimes have won ugly)Manning (little bro')- Really not too pretty and kind of considered a f-up at points, but hey now he has won it all twice.Rofflesburger- Kind of the same, looked fugly down the stretch gotten broke down.
Really Cutler wins with the Bears, you will file him here. The M.O. the Bears are setup really is the same as the Giants and Steelers - win by pass rush.
The guys that are pretty good, but not the long term success or big wins.NewtonStaffordRyanRomo - statistically really one of the best evah, but he has both flubbed it when it counted and kind of has the face you would love to smack like Cutler, except a bit more pretty.Rivers - was really on the cusp, but last season kind of suckedVick is a total x-factor. Hard still to compare him.
I can't really put Fitzgerald or Flacco even above Cutler, but they are solid on a crappy team and a great team that can't get over.
What's leftPalmer - he was good at one point. Now?Sanchez can't go thereDalton - do it again, could get goodFreeman - maybe better, maybe not. Didn't help squadush last year.Schaub - better and has better players around him, but cannot stay healthy.Hasselbeck - was better at one point and played ok at points, but can't say much better if betterAlex Smith - nice season, great game against Saints
So yeah Cutler about ranks where he ranks, deal is that I think he has enough skills to hold them around against the top guns.

Even with Jay Cutler being just in the top third of say NFL Qbs, that's one major improvement on your usual Bear QB which is usually about as pass efficient as a mid70s Oklahoma wishbone play-caller.
The best Bear QB EVER is a dude from the 40s and we are not even talking like Sammy Baugh, who was a freak and maybe the best football player ever. The next best one is probably Jim McMahon. Look it up, the guy was cool, but we are not exactly talking a prodigy.
― earlnash, Monday, 7 May 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)
McMahon was pretty overrated. I could have done well with that defense and being able to hand off to Walter Payton. You are right about the Bears having a terrible quarterback legacy. The best guys of the last 20 years are Jim Miller and Erik Kramer (not including Jay Cutler). Historically we have had such worthies as Bobby Douglass, Bob Avellini and Mike Phipps as starters. They traded Bobby Layne in the 50's and i guess the position was cursed after that.

it is pretty amazing that this dude is almost certainly going to hit free agency. i feel like this is a huge opportunity for those teams that just seem perennially unable to develop a QB. cleveland might be the prime spot for him, with that top defense and the great targets at wr1 and te, but for some reason i don't think they do it. i think it'd be contrary to the current personnel philosophy. arizona and tenn have got to be all over him, maybe even tampa. those sides are a legit qb away from being real playoff teams. minn will probably be in for him too. st. louis are probably going to pick someone with that top 3 http://images.chron.com/blogs/askacat/hatcat.JPG pick (lol). cincy think that they have a qb, bills probably do too. i think the jets probably can't afford him but don't rule it out, you never know with them fucks.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 11 December 2013 21:17 (eleven years ago)
Arizona is most likely, imo, at least based on the post-Warner years. It's a qb last hurrah party around there.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 December 2013 21:21 (eleven years ago)
What a shame if the Bears let him go. Trestman + Cutler for the next 6 years could be really cool. If Trestman can make McCown look good who knows what he could do with Cutler.

― christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 12 December 2013 15:38 (eleven years ago)
that of course is the other side of this. trestman and emery are placing huge bets on themselves (which btw is really absolutely the way to conduct yourself in their positions, tho rare). pay the money for cutler and you have 5 or 6 years of a very good qb, but then you can't spend that money elsewhere. they must believe that it is easier for them to find and develop a functional qb on the cheap than to restock a patchy roster on the cheap. i like trestman a lot off the back of this year and i hope that if they lay this bet it pays off for them.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 12 December 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago)
cutler really is at the perfect talent level where both decisions are defensible, personally i would rather not tie up that much $$$ in a dude who is not leet and never will be but there's a huge potential downside to letting him go.

eh I'll defend them on that one. Cutler's worked with Gase in the past and IMO he's a better QB in that system than Kaepernick would be. the fact that Kaep doesn't have a job right now is still insane though.

given how dismal cutler has been all season, and how much better he was last night, you can credibly concoct a scenario where gase looked ahead to this season, brought cutler in, and planned everything around winning this one game. a game that miami always wins.

JC has had a couple other good starts. Really, he has been about as good as ever has been overall which is mediocre/middling.
He is definitely not the basement.

Cutler's a second-rate Favre who never really had the benefit of playing on a great team. for all the grief Chicagoans gave him I thought he had a lot of really good games w/ them.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41867232/former-nfl-qb-jay-cutler-faces-dui-weapons-charges
Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested in Tennessee on Thursday night after a traffic crash and faces four charges, a spokesperson for the Franklin Police Department confirmed to ESPN.
Cutler, 41, was charged with driving under the influence, possession of a handgun while under the influence, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision and implied consent.
According to a release from the Franklin Police Department, officers responded to a minor traffic collision in downtown Franklin around 5 p.m. on Thursday. The police investigation suggests that Cutler rear-ended another vehicle.
"During their conversation with Cutler, officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol," the release stated. "Cutler was also slurring his words and had blood shot eyes. Cutler refused field sobriety tests and was taken to a local hospital where a blood sample was obtained through a blood search warrant."
A police search of Cutler's vehicle revealed that he had two firearms in his possession, including a loaded pistol.
