The Lions offer a better situation than Oakland, but that might be about it. Some of the issues Schwartz no doubt wrangled with this week include:

* A roster that even he noted, in a polite way, "has some holes." Realistically, the Lions are two good drafts away from replenishing their lineup.
* A disconcerting situation in the coaching office, where the team retained 14 of the 18 coaches who finished 2008 under former coach Rod Marinelli. Will Schwartz even be able to hire his own staff? No one in the NFL is certain about that.
* A front office comprised of two longtime Lions employees who have the ear of owner William Clay Ford. President Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew have new titles but did not have to order moving vans when they were hired into their current jobs.
* A worn-down fan base that offers no home-field advantage.

I disagree that the Lions are a better situation than Oakland. At least Oakland has some players and has been to the Super Bowl on the last decade.

It sounds funny considering how bad he was in Chicago, but Cedric Benson did play pretty good for the Bengals down the stretch. I think Cincy need a change of pace scatback to pair with him, but if they can find another James Brooks who could also big in the passing game, it might not be a bad pairing.

Tom Rathman was a pretty good player. Dude was great catching passes out of the backfield.

Tampa Bay fired John Gruden, which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Taking away the Superbowl year, Gruden's record in Tampa was 45-50 with two playoff losses in the following six years. Eh, I can see why they thought it was time after this year's collapse. Kiffin is also leaving and the defense needs complete overhaul. It is just time for a do over.

It seems like there are a ton of '85 Bears who coach in the NFL: Fisher, Rivera, Singletary, Frazier, there must be more. I remember Frazier going down with a torn ACL in that Bowl, nice to see him doing well.

Reeves is a little old school though. Elway hated him, and their offense didn't get creative until Shanahan came in. Reeves' offenses with Atlanta and NYG were snoozefests.

This is getting pretty good.Two of the top NFL information men in the business are engaged in a duel regarding the question of whether the Kansas City Chiefs are talking to former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan regarding the possibility of replacing former Chiefs coach Herm Edwards.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Chiefs and Shanahan are closing in on a deal.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reported on Thursday, and has reiterated today, that the Chiefs have made no contact with Shanahan.

“[U]nless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan is not going to be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Schefter writes. “It is not happening. People can keep talking as if it is. But it is not. He will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.”

Hiring Shanahan would be kind of a KC thing to do, they seem to like to jump on a once hot coach once they get let go or are available.

I think it was crazy that Derrick Thomas hadn't yet gotten in anyway. That dude was a freak. He got 7 sacks in a game when getting 7 sacks in a game was not just that Andy Reid was calling 60 pass plays in a game.

The log jam of killer end-rushers is probably why it hasn't happened, as is why Dean and Dent are not in either.

I am in favor of Thomas getting in, but it's not like he got seven sacks a game or anything like that on a regular basis. That game was just completely freakish. I remember watching the highlights.

The Bengals actually played better down the stretch, not that anybody noticed.

I'd say if you want a comparison, I'd say that Derrick Thomas was to Lawrence Taylor like Tim Raines was to Rickey Henderson. Thomas was a hell of an end rusher for a linebacker, very similar to LT. Considering how young the guy died, I cannot believe it has taken this long for the guy to get in to the hall. Thomas was a badass. Thing is that it is pretty much the entire finalist list are really all great. I'd say for Thomas it was that he played for KC, but that was in the Marty days and they had a really good D for a long time.

Criminy, none of those New Orleans linebackers are getting a shake either. Rickey Jackson was a total badass and Sam Mills was great, especially considering the dude was like 5-9 and he started in the USFL.

Cincy went 4-3-1 in the second half of the season, but they started 0-8. Their defense has improved, especially at linebacker, against the run and their dbs are pretty good. They need a pass rusher really bad. If they can get Palmer back, healthy and productive, they will be OK. I think Palmer coming back could help their run game, as teams would just plant everyone up front. Ryan Fitzpatrick played better down the stretch, but he is not a starter at QB and didn't give them much at all in the deep passing game.

The Bengals did have a pretty tough schedule, as they were playing all of the NFC East and AFC South, which were really competitive. That is the same reason the Steelers ended up with the toughest schedule this past year.

rickey jackson should be a friggin no brainer for the HoF, and i'm a HUGE sam mills fan tho mb not playing in the nfl until he was like 27 hurts his case. the fact that Kuechenberg still can't get in blows my mind. i'd be shocked if cortez kennedy wasn't in within a few years.

it's kinda some weird thing like how some of these dudes are most definitely hall-of-famers but they get passed over for the all-time legends. i feel like with sports HOFs lately, sportswriters are increasingly only voting in these 11 on a scale of 10 guys, or old-school vets that have had to wait a decade or more.

michael lombardi's in depth 09 FA RB rankings; i love how he breaks down the different kinds of backs and different skillsets. it's something that gets overlooked a lot in MSM analysis - systems make players. it's not like madden where u just get a bunch of 99s together and BLADOW u got a juggernaut team, you fit specific skillsets to specific responsibilities, because it's so rare that you really can find a guy who does everything well~~~~~

For me, running backs should be broken down into categories specifying the skill levels they perform best. For example, each category carries a specific role, and it’s important for the back to fit into the offense. You don’t want to bring a zone back into a man scheme run team. The pieces have to fit properly.

A player graded high here must be able to catch, run and block. We still have the nickel back position — a back who plays in passing downs, smaller good blocker, who can catch the ball. To be graded high, this player must score a 7 for hands and have enough intelligence to handle all sub-protections. The nickel back must dominate his position in college.

Running Back Reminders:

1. Does he make yards after first contact? He must win in this phase in college. How many yards does he get from the offensive line? Great backs finish.

2. Finish does not mean long runs all the time. Hard to have long runs in the NFL (50-plus yards) without making a person miss, or breaking a tackle.

3. Must be able to make plays when the play breaks down. Great players make great plays. We need more than what it is blocked for.

4. Running back is an instinctive position, hard to train good runners. Must have instincts.

5. Must protect the ball. How many fumbles in his career? What hand does he carry the ball in? Does he change hands? Did he fumble in HS?

6. Durable after 10 carries? After 20? After 30? What kind of hits does he take? What does he do in the spring? Are they live to tackle?

7. First-quarter production compared to fourth-quarter production.

8. Who does he gain his yards against? What rankings does the opponent have in run defenses?

9. Can he run our running plays? Must know our style of running. Denver is different than Minnesota.

10. Role on third down? Role in the kicking game? Can he catch the ball down the field? What does his passing tree look like?

11. Great backs are great in high school — did he win the state rushing title?

12. Is he a point-of-entry back? Or can he redirect at the line? Point-of-entry backs are limited in their run play selection (Tyrone Wheatley).

13. Whom does he block in protection? The OLB? The safety? We need to know “whom” he can block, as much as if he can block. Define the “whom.”

14. Does he know protections? How many do they have? What kind of protections do they use? Any scat protections used?

15. What kind of blocker is he? Low block? Cut in hole? Side-stepper? Define how he does it.

16. Fullback position is a dying breed in this league. Can the big halfback play FB?

17. Can the FB run the wheel route and win? Can he catch the ball DOWN the field? Must have some versatility.

18. Is the FB good in the kicking game? He has to be to make the team.

19. Little backs have to protect if they want to be involved in the offense.

20. Must have players who can run the offense and not run plays. Hard to get the ball to players we need to run plays for. Works in September, dies in November.

1. Derrick Ward, NY Giants, 28; 5-11, 233; 4.58; 2004; 7th round (235th overall); Peter Schaffer — The only concern with this player is his injury history and durability. But he has the size, versatility and hands to play in any offense.

2. Darren Sproles, San Diego, 25; 5-6, 187; 4.52; 2005; 4th round (130th overall); Gary Wichard – He’s not a little back, just a shorter back. He needs to have the right back next to him, but he is so explosive and so field-changing that he will make more out of 20 plays than he does 30.

Must run his runs, has to be led into the hole with clean surface and point of entry. He will get stronger as the game goes on and is best when there is a complement back with him.

2. Maurice Morris, Seattle, 28; 5-11, 202; 4.57; 2002; 2nd round (54th overall); Michael Sullivan — This back has grown on me. He can run inside and is adequate in the passing game, but he has never seemed to get the playing time he deserves. He just keeps moving the chains.

3. Correll Buckhalter, Philadelphia, 30; 5-11, 222; 4.59; 2001; 4th round (121st overall); John Rickert – Age and injuries to his knee will keep this player from being a big-time money maker.

4. Cedric Benson, Cincinnati, 25; 5-10, 225; 4.61; 2005; 1st round (4th overall); Eugene Parker — Was this his year, or was 2007? I tend to think it was junk yards this season and would be very reluctant to invest in him. He’s like a player who gets 10 rebounds a night but eight of them are off missed free throws. Benson has not convinced me.

5. Jesse Chatman, NY Jets, 29; 5-8, 215; 4.77; 2002; undrafted free agent; Brett Tessler — This guy was a good back, but he is lazy and unmotivated. If he gets his mind right, he could help a team.

1. Tatum Bell, Denver, 27; 5-11, 213; 4.41; 2004; 2nd round (41st overall); Kennard McGuire — The one thing he can do is run nickel runs and make a play in a zone scheme. That’s all, but it’s something.

interesting move by the cards - i've always been torn on what to think of pendergast, but always thought he'd make for an interesting dark horse hc candidate. he's the mad scientist type, VERY creative with his pressure packages, but he tends to outsmart himself, as evidenced by pittsburgh's final drive in the SB - it was an utterly maddening experience to watch him dial up all these (ineffective) 5 and 6 man pressures in that situation, and i could see blaming him somewhat for the loss. he could be an effective coordinator for a team with an actual, cohesive draft strategy (ie. not the cards).

This kid was a part of his 'crew' that he hangs with....He is known to be a really creepy guy and tries to pick up random frat-type guys at bars. Supposedly the undercover cop caught him blowing this kid and found coke on him. So he just did him a favor by keeping that out of the police report. There are definitely people who witnessed this happen.

Bills RB Lynch arrested in California

Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch is in trouble with the law again.

Lynch, who played in the Pro Bowl one week ago, was arrested Wednesday in Culver City, Calif., on felony charges for possession of a concealed firearm.

The Culver City Police Department on Sunday afternoon released a brief statement with details of the arrest. The statement noted officers spotted three men in a 2006 Mercedes Benz and recognized Lynch as the Bills' running back.

"A subsequent field investigation led to the discovery of a loaded firearm," the report said. "The officers determined the gun belonged to Lynch and he was arrested for possession of a concealed firearm."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's inmate database says Lynch was booked at 7:12 p.m. and was released on a $35,000 bond at 8:45 p.m.

Gun safety is a significant issue in the NFL. It has been a hot topic since New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress was arrested on two felony charges in December after accidentally shooting himself at a Manhattan nightclub.

"We can confirm that Marshawn was arrested in California and has retained an attorney," Bills vice president of communications Scott Berchtold said in a statement. "We are in the process of trying to gather the facts and will not offer a comment while that process is ongoing."

Lynch's agent didn't return ESPN.com's request for a comment.

Lynch's lawyer, M. Gerald Schwartzbach, told The Associated Press his client was not involved in a traffic accident and was in California visiting friends.

Lynch last summer was the subject of a hit-and-run investigation in Buffalo after his luxury SUV struck a woman in the street and sped away.

After nearly a month of posturing from Lynch's lawyers and the Erie County District Attorney, Lynch paid a $100 fine in a plea agreement. He didn't face criminal charges because the woman's injuries weren't serious enough. She received seven stitches at a local hospital.

In 2006, as Lynch was about to enter his junior season at California, he was the target of a drive-by shooting outside his prep alma mater, Oakland Technical. Police determined Lynch was the victim of mistaken identity.

Lynch, who will turn 23 in April, ran for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He also caught 47 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown.

Report: Texans, Vikings talk trade

The Texans and Vikings are close to a trade that would send quarterback Sage Rosenfels to Minnesota, possibly for a fourth-round draft pick, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday.

This is the second consecutive year in which the Vikings have been interested in acquiring Rosenfels, who is near the end of his contract, to be their starting quarterback.

Rosenfels wanted to be traded to the Vikings last season in hopes of starting for a team that has Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor at running back and has led the NFL in run defense for two straight years. At the time, the Vikings reportedly offered a third-round draft choice, but the Texans wanted a second-round pick. Both teams denied an offer was made.

Minnesota already has quarterbacks Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson on its roster and will want to extend Rosenfels' contract if the trade is completed.

The Texans had no comment Monday on the report.

Towards the end of the season I saw some isolated plays on one of the NFL Playbook kind of shows that had Derrick Brooks looking pretty bad in coverage. The dude is probably the 2nd future Hall of Famer to get released this week. Brooks was a definite badass in his prime, the guy could run like few linebackers of his size. I'd bet that him Sapp and eventually Lynch all end up in the Hall from that Tampa team.

The concept of "Roy Williams" is pretty much exactly what the Chargers need -- a hard-nosed, aggressive safety -- but the actual Roy Williams has been pretty shitty.

Even when Parcells was in Dallas they would often pull Roy Williams sometimes in passing situations. The guy could hit and he was a star player (for a safety) in college who ended up on the Cowboys, but I'm not sure he really was ever that great.

Haynesworth is definitely good, but that is a whole lot of cash tied up in a DT. The dude has missed some games, he hasn't played a full season since he was a rookie, of course some of those missed games were for stompin' on a dudes head.

Smith and Cooper were on a 21-foot vessel that left Clearwater Pass on Saturday morning for a fishing trip and did not return as expected, the Coast Guard said Sunday. Crews used a helicopter and a 47-foot motor-life boat to search a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass on Sunday.

"We are in contact with the Coast guard and Corey's family has been informed," Smith's agent Ron Del Duca told ESPN.com's Bill Williamson. "Corey is one of the good guys out there. We're just waiting for more information and hoping for the best."

Troy Asmus, one of Cooper's agents, said he has been in contact with the NFL and that the league is aware of the situation.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen has reported, with excellent elaboration via ESPN.com’s Tim Graham, that the Buccaneers offered a first-round and a third-round pick for quarterback Matt Cassel as part of the menage-a-trade that would have sent quarterback Matt Cassel to the Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler to Tampa.

So why did the Pats pass?

A reader has shared with us this nugget from Michael Felger of WEEI. Put simply, the Bucs arrived at the party too late (and possibly with a cinnamon bobka).

If that’s the case, then it all makes sense.

But Mort says (via Graham) that the Broncos were willing to give up their own first-round pick — No. 12 overall in the draft — for Cassel. Under those circumstances, why didn’t Belichick bite?

We agree with Mortensen’s suggestion that Belichick would be less willing to help a former assistant coach than to help the front-office guy who helped set the table for those three Super Bowl victories in four year.

Mort also suggests that the Pats leaked word of the Broncos’ effort to trade Cutler to the Boston Globe as a way to mess with the Broncos.

We only wish that the Broncos and Pats played each other twice per year. As a consolation, the Broncos and Chiefs still do.

Matt Cassell did pretty good in a odd situation for NE, but I think it is crazy to think about taking him over Cutler. Cutler has a really big boom arm and played well last year. It was Denver's defense that was the primary reason for their collapse. This all seems to me like inventing trouble. The only exception being maybe Denver has some health reservations on Cutler with his diabetes, but that seems like a stretch.

The eighth pick in the draft last year, defensive end Derrick Harvey, got $17.47 million guaranteed in a contract averaging $4.6 million a year. In essence, in the way the NFL pays rookies, the eighth pick's compensation is equivalent to the combined pay of the 23rd, 34th, 47th and 58th picks. Insane. Imagine if someone tells you they'd trade the eighth pick in the draft for a lower first-round pick and three second-round picks. You'd do it in a second. The Patriots will draft at least a couple of keeper players on Day 1, and they'll have the kind of salary manageability with those players that great teams with big stars have to have.

New York Giants running back Derrick Ward cashed in on his 1,025-yard season by reaching a four-year, $17 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to a league source.

Though many football people believed he would be going to the Cleveland Browns in free agency, Ward made a visit to the Bucs that convinced him to cancel his other trips. Over the weekend, Ward made a quick visit to the Broncos. He had also been in conversations with the Giants about re-signing.

Basically, the Bucs gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.

In the first year alone, the league source indicated Ward would earn $6 million guaranteed. He'll make $9.25 million over the first two years and $13 million over the first three.

The 228-pound Ward is a power back with plenty of impact. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry. What's more amazing is that he gained 1,025 yards last year even though he only started three games.

In 2007, Ward rushed for 602 yards on 125 caries and had three touchdowns.

LOS ANGELES (AP)—City Council members in the city of Industry unanimously approved a proposal Thursday for a pro football stadium intended to lure a team back to the Los Angeles area.

The vote helped clear the way for developers of the $800 million venue to begin talks with NFL teams about a possible move to the industrial and warehousing city 15 miles east of Los Angeles.

Majestic Real Estate Co. managing partner John Semcken said the company would begin shopping for a team on April 1, the deadline for opponents of the project to file a lawsuit.

At least eight franchises, including the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings, have been identified as possible targets for relocation, he said. Developers are confident the NFL would approve a move by a team, he said.

“They understand the stadium, they understand the economic opportunity,” Semcken said. “All they want is certainty. They want to make sure our stadium is getting built.”

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league was monitoring potential stadium developments in the Los Angeles area but declined to comment on specific sites.

“We would like to return to the area but only under circumstances that would benefit both the community and the NFL,” he said.

Majestic intends to pay for the stadium with private funds and start construction as soon as a team has committed to playing there.

The neighboring cities of Walnut and Diamond Bar, fearing traffic-clogged streets and rowdy fan behavior, have threatened lawsuits to stop the project.

Walnut Councilman Joaquin Lim said officials in his city would likely decide whether to file a lawsuit on Wednesday, after Industry had filed stadium documents with the county. Two Walnut council members were targeted with recall papers this month by critics who said they had not opposed the stadium strongly enough.

Diamond Bar City Manager Jim DeStefano did not return a call seeking comment.

Semcken said Walnut officials have refused to meet with Majestic representatives.

The company had been negotiating with Diamond Bar officials over paying to widen streets and hire additional security guards to ease concerns in that city, he said.

Thing is, I don't recall any of this Cutler is a punk stuff happening DURING past couple seasons. Criminy they freaking kicked Plummer pretty hard into retirement to make the guy the starter. Cassell got sacked a BUNCH and was playing with an offense coming off the the best year ever. Cassell might do OK in KC, but not having that good NE line, Moss and Welker is going to be big.

but why would bowlen ok that deal? either something is v wrong with cutler, or bowlen is off his rocker. neither of which were apparent up til now.

Maybe there is something between Cutler and Bowlen that hasn't aired or maybe Bowlen is just backing the dude he just hired. Bowlen has had 3 coaches since the early 80s, so maybe this is a different kind of situation to him.

i'm not a fan of cassel at all - he had some nice games towards the end of the year, yeah, but billy volek looked good once upon a time too. NE had to change their offense to compensate for his many limitations, and if he looked good it was because the coaching staff was so intimately familiar with his weaknesses (he can't throw downfield except off play-action and he's awful playing under center) and strengths (he's alright in the shotgun) that they could protect him from situations where he would flounder. i see his ceiling as a league-average QB, which has some value, but cutler's already surpassed that ceiling.

xpost i was as skeptical of cassel as anyone but you're underselling him. maybe the pats simplified the offense from the most complicated one in the NFL, but by the end of the season cassel showed pretty definitively that he could make good decisions, throw very accurate short and midrange passes, and make plays with his legs. i'm not crazy about his pocket awareness and he can't throw the deep ball, but given how little he's actually played he might not be done improving. i would take him over many guys in the league right now.

You know, I'm still not convinced that Billy Volek might not be better option than some of the dudes getting playing time on other clubs. The Titans never really gave him much of a shot, as they skipped over him and went straight to Vince Young. Volek didn't play game breaker for Tennessee, but that was a club whose key skills players had bailed or failed by the time he got in a few games. The guy did walk in off the bench in the 4th quarter for SD and helped win a playoff game, which is something I doubt any other backup in the NFL can really state.

For the faults I have thrown, I do think Cassell should do OK for KC and he is a big pickup for the club. Put it this way, I think by comparison he is more Trent Green than Kurt Warner (and I am a Trent Green fan from IU). I'd guess I'd ultimately have more doubts on the guy that is coaching KC's record than Cassell. I'm just not sure that Cassell is going to be able to top what he has already done while I think Cutler could improve. Cutler has a crazy arm. If Cutler gets paired up with a Plaxico or Moss kind of receiver where he can just launch them up and he will throw 40 TDs.

If I was Detroit, I might give up the #1 pick in the draft to Denver for Cutler and the Broncos #2.

I'd freaking kill for the Bears to get Cutler but the McCaskey family is a bunch of skinflints who couldn't pull the trigger for Dan Marino when they had the chance in the 80s (there were rumors of that trade around 1988).

ya, because by that point in the season NE's coaches realized that he couldn't take snaps under center, and played him almost exclusively in shotgun afterwards - in their last 6-7 games, something like 88% of his pass attempts were out of the shotgun. i also don't think he has much ability or willingness when it comes to making stick throws in the intermediate passing game. he's an effective runner but i hate how jittery he gets when he has anything less than a perfect pocket.

i think he'll do ok in KC too, mainly because the coaching staff knows him and he has some good receiver talent, but i don't think he's a star in the making or nothin

i agree with shoring up the unnecessary roughness rules; these were really loopholes that needed to be closed. i'm a bit surprised by the wedge becoming illegal. i would think most of the danger on kickoffs results from the speed involved and even without the wedge that's not going to change.

That is a screwed up situation. My brother in laws' brother got in that very similar situation running his infant son to the ER a few months back. He was being followed right up to the ER doors with sirens going as his wife rushed in his son and they really worked him over throwing him to the ground and all. ER doc said if they had been a couple of minutes later the kid would have died.

sarge tbqh i have no idea - i used to be pretty down on stafford but now i'm undecided on whether or not he's a franchise guy, blame lack of inside knowledge combined with paralysis by analysis i guess... he could be byron leftwich, or he could be jay cutler. i think i would probably take him if i was in detroit's position, and i also think it'd be kind of lame if they took a linebacker or lineman with that pick. but there's no track record for this front office/coaching staff, so it's tough to make any educated guesses... if i had to guess i'd say no, but who knows~

denver is basically an expansion team now.

it seems pretty clear that cutler was not gonna get an exension or better deal here after this went south. now he'll go somewhere and likely get a better deal contract wise. he got what he wanted. everything else flowing out of dove valley imo is bowlen & co hard-spinning a turd.

I'm not sold on Mike Nolan as D Coordinator either. In my opinion the success of the Ravens defense starts with Ozzie Newsome, so I only give him a little bit of credit for the job he did there, and I think Nolan's stint with the 9ers has made into a bit of a punchline these days. Nobody on the 49ers respected him, as far as I can tell. Are guys going to want to run through a wall for him at this stage of his career? I'm not sure about that.

And then add the fact that he has no talent to work with and I just don't see that team improving much on D.

i think the only thing keeping the broncos @ 9-7 or so instead of 5-11 was shanahan's skills on "o" (the lack of skills on the "d" side might be responsible for them being 9-7 instead of 11-5 but whatever.) i think cutler is a str8 up dbag but i think he's--i don't want to say "right--but the more sympathetic party in this case. bring in a NE assistant coach who wants to immediately replace you with a guy who may be a product of the NE system, a one-season wonder, etc. i think cassel is better than that, but if i'm cutler i'm thinking "fuck this new guy." i think cutler could go somewhere else and be a hero to one of these franchises, esp. the lions, jets, or bears (all of whom have had shitty qb situations for years.) and who the hell are the broncos going to plug in to the qb spot now?
