I would've picked the Cards over the Ravens, but not over the Stillers.

WmC, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 02:59 (sixteen years ago)

i refuse to believe that arizona's defeats of loltlanta, carlolina, and philoldelphia are indicative of anything other than a combination of good fortune and three teams with a young confused qb, an occasionally int prone comedy qb, and a dense, unaware qb. then i remember that roethlisberger fits all three descriptions so all bets are off.

a dear friend of my mom, my aunt julie, who was from wv and a huge steelers fan, once gave me a steelers rain poncho in about 1977. i wore that shit like every day. i never saw ANYONE else with a rain PONCHO. esp on those sunny days.

anyway, she's gone now, but for her, and my 10 y/o self and that damn pvc rain poncho, it's the steelers this year. (i miss you aunt julie, you were a sweetheart. rip.)

heh. my hometown is in the panhandle of MD, and the WV border took on a lot of significance there as far as ppl being snobby about "ok we are in a kinda rundown small city in appalachia.. but at least we don't live in west virginia." even though it is a couple miles away and not that different (lower taxes, worse roads, can buy beer and cigarettes on sundays). i also realized the majority of folks on the MD side are likely to be redskins fans, and *all* the steelers fans i know are from the WV side.

That's not a bad point. And on purely football terms he's been the QB on two of the most entertaining offenses of the past twenty years (Vermeil Rams and current Cards)

Tomlin does seem like a coach that I'd want to play for-plus he's a dead ringer for the dude from House. But still, go cards.

Bill Magill, Friday, 23 January 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

I'm a Cards fan at the beginning of EVERY season, actually. But I'm usually disappointed and over it by Week 6. I just like the idea of "this could be the year."

Oddly, I never feel compelled to do that with the Lions.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2009 23:42 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the suggest ban dispensation everyone- I do have respect for the steelers and their scrappy sandlot antics. I've decided to temper my anti-Steelers rage into something constructive (ie. a sword of vengence) so we'll see how that works out.

When Warner was/is on, the dude is a freak in the deep passing game like few QBs that I have ever seen. Deep passes are freaking cool, I'd much rather watch that than two defensive juggernauts bash each other on 2 yard runs and trade field goals.

At William and Mary, Tomlin bulked up and became a downfield receiving threat, establishing a team record by averaging 20.2 yards a catch. But football also provided Tomlin an opportunity for the perfect melding of the academic and athletic, and perhaps the underpinnings of his coaching style: he memorized his opponents’ biographies, the better to trash-talk them.

there was a small group of people rooting for the cards when i stopped by 51st state to catch some of the atlanta game. they had jerseys! so they have 3 fans somewhere near foggy bottom. also the animated gif guy. so that makes..

1 deadspin guy
2 bidwells (are there more?)
1 animated gif

1 younger sister of the schef (right?)

so the cardinals have 8 fans, I think.

i mean i was a cards bandwagon jumper last year and they're a pretty good team but if the d hadn't gelled so perfectly during the playoffs they'd be a hot mess. Steelers are just fine to watch but they never really excited me and I have a feeling pitt is either really going to demolish them or get swamped in big play points. I'm certainly going to watch, but I'm just not that into it.

I would add at least 2 Georgetown students who are Cardinals fans to the 3 GW ones Daria listed, based on my viewing of Eagles-Cards at a bar out here. There was another guy with them who was making way more noise, but he was wearing a Manchester United jersey (which was also red, I guess) and really seemed mostly interested in being a dick to the Eagles fans. Still, we're into double digits!

Also, there are the Cardinals fans boards (whom I discovered when I was looking for the gif of Jake Delhomme) but I am not entirely sure those people are real.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

i know what you're saying but i feel like some of these commercials turn even heretofore honorable-seeming dudes into "lol @ dudes watching horses playing football" and "we hate all women" kinda guys

the gush of yesterday (omar little), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

those commercials and those reactions to commercials always make me afraid that my mom was right about football

most super bowl parties i've attended i've missed the ads by going outside to smoke, it's true. so for all i know the two non-smokers i know are inside lolling @ horses and fatteys.

k3vin k., Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

i think also ppl think they're SUPPOSED to laugh at them so they laugh more than they should. the only one in recent memory i can even recall was that weird racism panda cartoon and i was like, ugh, i should've had a cigarette instead.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:27 (sixteen years ago)

tho what is worse -- the ppl who overlaugh at ads, or the ppl who critique them as being "not funny" or "not worth it" because they expect some kind of goodfellas experience from their super bowl ads due to the overhype/cost? O_o

i think i know more of those types than the laughers.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

it's like, they are still just advertisements -- were you expecting them to stick the ups guy into some wickerman ritualistic murder scenario to appease your wants and dreams in this ad, sir?

i watched the pats <3 <3 <3 def carolina at a "super bowl party," right, me and the one other person who actually liked football, got kicked into the other room on the small TV during the fourth quarter (THAT GAME. it was a very important fourth quarter!) because there was an ALL NEW episode of sex and the city that night. the only people i was friends in new england were fellow grad students in the humanities. normally they threw v good parties but as far as NFL, they just didn't appreciate.

i hated last year's, it was stressing me out & ruining the entire week, wished i could just take something and wake up monday & find out who won. of course on monday i was hoping i'd just taken something and that didn't really happen.

this is the saddest story i've ever heard in my entire life. the only thing i have that is CLOSE to that is that debacle the giants lost the Y2K season (i blame the computer problems) but we put on music and not sex and the city.

but speaking of LAST season, i just found out they are in the process of updating the america's game series on the nfl network to include the colts and giants! the giants episode will be eli "unstoppable" manning and michael strahan -- looking forward to this one.

that pats-carolina superbowl i watched with my friend, his girlfriend, and her dad. only the dad (who i didn't really know at all) liked football so we bonded pretty fast; i was FREAKING OUT late in that game and the only person who was even close to my level was this weird old guy with a neatly trimmed moustache and a vintage pat the patriot sweater.

i watched the steelers-seahawks superbowl with a bunch of film students who knew nothing about football and did my best to explain the finer points of hating the steelers.

probably the best group i had for an sb was last year, but that game was so beyond intense that i really could have been watching with anyone/no one.

I'm taking the Cardinals by 14 to 17 points. A lot of people will think that's crazy, but you gotta understand the Cardinals have all the motivation right now. Nobody expects them to be there, so they're out there trying to prove something. That's the best situation to be in, period. That's the way all the most successful people on the planet motivate themselves. So yeah, Arizona is gonna stomp their hearts and Kurt Warner is going to win the Super Bowl MVP, go into the Hall of Fame and become an excellent commentator for ESPN in a few years.

actually the main failing of the article is that he doesn't acknowledge how shitty and stupid the other "storyline" is--i.e. let's ballwash the steelers for the 184757th time and talk about how great their franchise is, and their history, and their fans, and "Ben" and "Hines" and "Troy." It's splitting the difference between how uniquely bad football media is among the major sports (very, very strong case) and how the Cardinals blow (not quite as strong of a case).

Send them north out of the pleasure dome that the Bidwills blackjacked out of the state of Arizona, and the team did things like give up 56 points to the New York Jets, playing such shoddy defense that Brett Favre threw for six touchdowns. This, of course, ignited another outbreak of hot and steamy Favre love from the easily smitten television press corps, so we have the Cardinals to blame even for that.

most underrated storyline of this superbowl is that the cards and the steelers were actually the same team in 1944

During World War II, the Steelers experienced player shortages. They twice merged with other NFL franchises to field a team. During the 1943 season, they merged with the Philadelphia Eagles forming the "Phil-Pitt Eagles" and were known as the "Steagles." This team went 5-4-1. In 1944 they merged with the Chicago Cardinals and were known as Card-Pitt (or, mockingly, as the "Carpets").[7] This team finished 0-10, marking the only winless team in franchise history.[9]

3) the real question in this game is, what will bruce play at halftime

so one of my facebook friends (philosophy prof, go figure) was like "i am rebelling against the unwashed masses by ignoring this whole thing." & before i even had a chance to write something, he already got a reply from someone else saying basically you just don't appreciate NFL, but it's true that without the patriots this year there's not much of a point to watching.

NFL RUNOFF miss u plaxico (daria-g), Monday, 2 February 2009 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

k3vin k., Monday, 2 February 2009 04:12 (sixteen years ago)

Congrats to the Steelers and all even though I hate them, but will somebody please tell me why the booth didn't review that "fumble" at the end? That was so obviously an incomplete pass. If I was a Cardinals fan, I'd be fucking FUMING right now.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 2 February 2009 04:13 (sixteen years ago)

nah dude that was def a fumble. he was already losing it as his arm was going forward

k3vin k., Monday, 2 February 2009 04:17 (sixteen years ago)

People slagging this game must actually hate football. No matter who won, this was a great game.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 February 2009 04:17 (sixteen years ago)

I had a question about that fumble call too, but then I remembered how much I hate people who still bitch about a bad call months and years after the fact.

Still, two Steelers SB wins in the last four years with questionable reffing...

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 February 2009 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

OK maybe "so obviously" might've been a stretch, but at least review it!!

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 2 February 2009 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

dudes on sportscenter or whatever on ESPN just now asked the same question - at least review. if they'd overturned it, there was a 15 yard penalty on pittsburgh on the play so that would've given the cards the ball and one more down.. uh.. maybe around the pittsburgh 45?

NFL RUNOFF miss u plaxico (daria-g), Monday, 2 February 2009 04:20 (sixteen years ago)

I have no problem with people bitching about bad calls, as long as it's justified. (xpost)

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 2 February 2009 04:22 (sixteen years ago)

4Q, 1:57 Jeffrey Marcus reports from the below the stadium that four men with black Reebok gum bag full of “Steelers win” hats and T-shirts who had walked onto the field, just came running back through the tunnel. They returned with bags that said “Cards win.”

PHIL COLLINS SHOULD GET A SUPER BOWL RING
Posted by Mike Florio on February 3, 2009, 1:21 p.m.

If the NFL truly is a copycat league, pregame preparations throughout the next couple of years will feature heavy doses of Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight.

Ed Werder of ESPN reported before Sunday’s game that Tomlin played the song for the team at the secret Saturday night hotel where they stayed.

Receiver Hines Ward told Werder that it put the players in a “meditative state,” and that he imagined himself on the field, making plays.

In The Air Tonight has enjoyed tremendous staying power, given that it was released in 1981 — before Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was born, and when Tomlin was only nine years old.

Too little, too late from ESPN on Roethlisberger

Posted by Mike Florio on July 21, 2009 4:23 PM ET
ESPN spokesman Mac Nwulu has provided us with a statement from the folks in Bristol regarding their decision not to mention the civil sexual assault suit against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, which to our knowledge has been ignored by every national ESPN platform.

"At this point, we are not reporting the allegations against Ben Roethlisberger because no criminal complaint has been filed," Nwulu said. "As far as we know, this is a civil lawsuit that Roethlisberger has yet to address publicly."

Actually, Roethlisberger has addressed the lawsuit publicly, via a Monday night statement from lawyer David Cornwell, who has been retained to represent Roethlisberger.

And let's be realistic about it. If he's smart (and, frankly, the jury is still out on that one), Ben won't ever comment on the case publicly, other than to say, "No comment."

Besides, we don't buy for a minute the notion that a civil claim unaccompanied by a criminal complaint makes the situation not newsworthy. Indeed, ESPN posted last night on its NFL page a blurb from the AP regarding the civil suit filed by former NFL kicker Tony Zendejas, in which he claims a violation of his civil rights in connection with, coincidentally, a rape prosecution.

In that case, have the folks who allegedly violated the civil rights of Zendejas been charged criminally? Nope. But that hasn't kept ESPN from posting the AP item.

And that's the kicker on this one -- ESPN uses stuff from the AP all the time, and the AP has issued a story about the lawsuit against Roethlisberger.

So while we appreciate the fact that ESPN provided us with a statement, we choose to regard it as a hollow attempt to explain away what appears to be a strategy for remaining in the good graces of Ben Roethlisberger.

devil's advocate: this woman could be some nutbar for all we know, the only established fact is that she has filed a suit, and there's no reason that in itself should be news - i could file a similar suit vs Ben tomorrow even though i've never met him, and it would make for a tremendous story even though the only 'news' would be that i am indeed some nutbar. if he gets done for it, write it large. but in the meantime it may not be very fair splashing around the lol rapist headlines.

from TMZ:

The woman accusing Ben Roethlisberger of sexual assault claims she tried to tell the head of hotel security about the incident the day after it happened -- but the guy completely blew her off and threatened her job.

In her lawsuit filed last week in Nevada, Andrea McNulty claims Guy Hyder -- the chief of security at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe -- told her she was "over-reacting" and that "most girls would feel lucky to have sex with someone like Ben Roethlisberger."

McNulty also claims Hyder told her that John Koster -- the president of the hotel - will "personally fire you for starting rumors about Roethlisberger's personal life."

McNulty also claims Hyder told her that Koster would be impressed by the sexual encounter, allegedly saying "Koster would love you even more if he knew about this ... Koster would suck his d*ck if Roethlisberger let him."

In the suit, McNulty claims she assumed the incident would be investigated by hotel security, but Hyder "did not do his job of investigating the assault." McNulty also claims she was "afraid of the consequences of going to police authorities since it was obvious to her that Harrah's and it's personnel ... would side with and support Roethlisberger."

McNulty also claims several Harrah's employees broke into her home and ripped files off of her computer, presumably for the purpose of defending themselves against a possible lawsuit.

Several months after the incident -- after McNulty claims she sought psychological treatment because of the encounter -- she claims she had a conversation with Hyder. McNulty says she told Hyder that she had been hospitalized specifically because of the Roethlisberger incident. Hyder allegedly replied, "I figured that was what was wrong, but I thought it was just like a date rape thing."

McNulty claims her bosses told her she was on thin ice at work ... so she preemptively lawyered up.

McNulty is seeking $380,000 in medical fees plus an unspecified amount of punitive damages.

BTW FWIW RE: ESPN non-coverage of this raep story...

I don't doubt for a moment that there is a golden boy ring of safety placed around BR to protect a white QB player (and yeah, that's a little shady), but at the same time, the Duke LAX raep thing -- the jumps to conclusions, the finger-pointing in national media and the eventual dismissal and exposure of the DA on the case -- lets me sleep a little better.

sleep a little better WRT non-coverage. Obv things need to play out for more than 10 minutes before media should comment sometimes.

three weeks pass...

In a statement released by lawyer David Cornwell, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger takes a howitzer to the lawsuit filed against him alleging sexual assault.

Cornwell attaches to his statement e-mail messages sent by McNulty to the soldier that had been fabricated by the wife of a man with whom the plaintiff supposedly had been involved.

Says Cornwell: "We believe that [the plaintiff's] own words directly refute the scurrilous allegations made in her Complaint. The attached documents, containing what we believe are [the plaintiff's] own words, are merely the tip of the investigative iceberg.

"[The plaintiff] should abandon her lawsuit immediately and admit that Ben Roethlisberger did not rape her."

Per Cornwell, the plaintiff wrote two days after the alleged sexual assault that she was looking forward to having dinner with Roethlisberger and other celebrities attending the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.

Then, five months after the alleged assault, she wrote that she "would date Ben Roethlisberger" if the made-up soldier were to end their relationship.

We'll be looking over the e-mails and possibly adding more details and analysis. For now, it's clear that Cornwell and Roethlisberger are adopting a very aggressive posture. It remains to be seen whether it works.

actually, no.
those shaq shows are great for five minutes if you have a tivo, but at minute six you can begin to feel your eyes melt.
on the plus side, roffles DOES beat shaq at a game of horse that big aristotle claims he threw "to get in his head"
