Nachos, to me, are food for watching sports live at the venue, whereas wings are the sort of thing you tear through while watching at home. Both of them are so perfect within those specific contexts that I cannot reasonably compare the two.

what KIND of nachos are we talking about? i find that it is much, much easier for a random sports bar (or even vaguely reputable place) to completely f up nachos than it is for them to completely f up wings is the thing here. i voted wings on this basis -- they're a more strict discipline, whereas when you say nachos you could mean some awesome from-a-mexican-joint-made-by-authentic-ideas kind of guac and beans and stewed meats (if you're into it) and jalepenos explosion OR you could mean this

the answer, for the reasons pointed out above, is wings. maybe really really transcendent nachos could top wings, but avg. nachos vs. avg. wings = avg. wings every single time.

another thing is that if it is just you or if you are with your weird friend who doesn't like bar food you can get an order of wings for yourself and not feel like a complete glutton, whereas i could never in good conscience order nachos when i'm going solo.

Maybe it is the impassioned defenses here, but you know what, I am getting off the fence and voting for wings. The Schef is right, really. I have had subpar nachos many times, and had some complete nacho failures amongst the many nachos I have eaten, but I do not recall having an experience with wings that really went south on me. Even if unspectacular, the wings remain solid.

I would assume a sufficiently large outdoor cookout could produce excellent nachos and excellent wings. Like, I think if I went to the LA County Fair and could not find both, I would be shocked, and disappointed. I do not know of other county's fairs, though.

The way I likes my nachos: thick carpet o' chips with minimum overlap on a baking sheet covered in aluminum foil. Individual dollops of refried beans on each chip like a sweet texmex kiss. Splash liberally with salsa and give a light cologne of hot sauce. Blanket with pepperjack and cheddar. Into the oven. Finish and garnish generously with COLD chopped onion, mashed avocado and greek yogurt in lieu of sour cream.
Repeat weekly.

Alton Brown was doing wings the other night but I wasn't paying any attention, so I just looked up his recipe on the web. No frying -- steam the wings for 10 minutes, then roast them for 40 minutes (!) at 425˚ (!!).

I can see the steaming, but that sounds like way too long to roast at that temp.

I used to be a vegetarian. I kind of go back and forth and don't eat meat all that often.. been vegetarian for a couple of years at a time, then I go back. At the moment I'd rather eat meat because otherwise it's too easy to just eat a bunch of bread and pasta and stuff which is gross.

the thing about wings is that if you are in a bar by yourself, or just two ppl, it is easier to get a managable quantity than it is to get a smaller sized plate of nachos. wings are often sold by the wing, or in counts of maybe 4.

it doesn't usually say it on the menu but at most bars/restaurants if you're dining by yourself you can order "a nacho"

There's a bar a block from my house that usually has free wings for patrons on Monday nights. I think that must really be the only times I ever eat them - if I wander in there (which I rarely do) and I'm sufficiently sozzled, I'll have a couple. I wouldn't if they made nachos, though.

One chip, at least three beans, a teaspoon of salsa, and a teaspoon of melted cheese. It would espeically endear you to the bartender/server if you just kept ordering them individually for the length of a game or something.

If I had to make nachos using only a microwave, it would have to be in stages. Microwave the cheese first, and set it aside for a minute. Then microwave the chips and beans (or maybe just the beans). Dress the chips with whatever you're putting on there like salsa, guac, chilies, meat, whatever. Then dress that with the cheese.

WmC is indeed correct. Bad nachos have either cold chips or veering toward spongy ones = unappetizing.

There used to be a place in or near Long Beach we went to all the time in the early 70s, Juan's Little Tijuana, that had a "house specialty" appetizer with falling-apart stewed chunks of beef and/or pork that is what I shoot for every time I make nachos. I don't think "nachos" was even a common term back then...we just ordered one or two House Specials and then thought about entrees later if at all.

I love me some crumbling carnitas and in a green chile sauce that could be most decidedly awesome.

Anybody know the origin of Buffalo Wings? Are they so called 'cause they're from there?

There are four different legends about how the Buffalo wings came to be.[3][4]

One story is that Buffalo wings were first prepared at the Anchor Bar, located at 1047 Main Street (between North Street and Best Street) in Buffalo, New York, USA on October 3, 1964, by Teressa Belissimo, co-owner of the Anchor Bar with her husband Frank. Upon the unannounced, late-night arrival of their son, Dominic (and several of his friends from college), Teressa needed a fast and easy snack to present to her hungry guests. It was then that she came up with the idea of deep frying chicken wings (normally thrown away or reserved for stock) and tossing them in cayenne hot sauce.[5][6][7][8][3][4] While the wings were deep frying, Teressa decided to serve left over celery sticks with blue cheese to her son and his friends to tide them over. This is the reason why in most places buffalo wings are served with celery(or carrots) and eaten with Blue Cheese.
A second version, as told by Dominic Bellisimo (Frank and Teressa's son) to The New Yorker reporter Calvin Trillin in 1980, stated: "It was Friday night in the bar and since people were buying a lot of drinks he wanted to do something nice for them at midnight when the mostly Catholic patrons would be able to eat meat again." He stated that it was his mother, Teressa, who came up with the idea of chicken wings.[3][4]

Let me say, trying to shove fiery hot nuggets of chicken goodness in your mouth while driving a stick shift through Spring Garden traffic is not the most efficient of driving methods. This in part to the fact your nose is running, your mouth is burning, and your reaching for your 64 ounces of Pepsi, they require you to buy or sign a disclaimer. Then there is your fingers that end up in hot red hot wing sauce, and when you try to wipe them on the napkin, the paper just tears and sticks.

yeah the other week i ordered some delivered wings and got boneless instead of real wings. see, the thing those boneless wing philistines fail to recognize is that while eating off the bone can be messy, the chicken actually tastes like something.

i should note that i got boneless DUE TO THEIR ERROR

I have had microwaved nachos and, to my surprise, the chips were not as soggy as I was expecting. But before the suggest bans start flying like a perfectly thrown Bernie Kosar forward pass I prefer under them under a broiler where the chips become stronger and more reliable. The taste grows and blooms like a hundred nacho orchids.

Alton Brown was doing wings the other night but I wasn't paying any attention, so I just looked up his recipe on the web. No frying -- steam the wings for 10 minutes, then roast them for 40 minutes (!) at 425˚ (!!).

I can see the steaming, but that sounds like way too long to roast at that temp.

This recipe works really well. Crispy skin, meat falling off the bone, and you don't end up with a pot of hot oil to deal with afterward. Will be making a massive batch with that method tomorrow.

Wings Fo' Evah. Seriously. I had a huge lunch, and prolly won't eat anything terribly large for dinner, but if someone were to show up with 24 hot wings and some blue cheese dressing, I could CRUSH it without pausing for a breath.

I did nachos again tonight because this is not getting out of my head.
I no longer desire nachos.

the results are skewed thanks to site new answers attracting angry pro-microwave vegetarians who aren't football fans over from ile. i really hate that feature of the site and i wish there was a way to disclude ilnfl threads from it tbh. i mean there are not 40 ppl who even occasionally post here! the real vote is in the commentary and i think we know who won that.

This morning I acheived ultimate wing triumph by procuring chicken wings from that farmer that Michael Pollan had 58 orgasms over and BEST OF ALL aside from them being 500% certified Alice Water's approved yuppie foodie wings I was free to get ONLY THE FLATTIES which are the best parts IMO. Fatties v. drummies deserves it's own poll methinks.

nah the real answer is obvious. drumsticks vs flatties (w/e those are called!) would be more interesting imo
