Excited about Cal/Maryland this weekend. I hear Ralph Friedgen lost a bunch of weight!

VT/Tide of course. Haven't looked at the rest of the schedule, tbh, because I know I'll watch whatever's on regardless.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

OU/BYU, GA/OK st are the other marquee matchups but, yeah, im down to see everything

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

Why are you guys talking about non Florida football when Jesus himself will ultimately lead the team to complete and total victory

mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

I'm IN Florida. You think I don't hear enough talk about that?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 00:50 (sixteen years ago)

So Jagodinski got fired by Boston College for interviewing for the Jets head coaching job, didn't get the job, got hired as OC for the Jaguars, and then got dismissed from that job too!

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 3 September 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

oops.

If he sits tight, he might get the Gamecocks if Spurrier stinks up this season.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 September 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

oc for the bucs u mean. wouldve been too much if jagz was oc for the jags

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/03/jagodzinski-not-equipped-to-direct-nfl-offense/

^makes me wonder how he got hired, what interview went like, etc

johnny crunch, Thursday, 3 September 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

Looking forward to watching the ugly bowl tonight. The uniforms of Oregon vs. the field of Boise State.

Oh dam, really? I'm gonna have to watch that with sunglasses.

Pac-10 reviewing Oregon RB Blount's actions

By ANNE M. PETERSON (AP) – 1 hour ago

The Pac-10 Conference will review tape of a punch thrown by Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount following the Ducks' loss to Boise State in the season opener Thursday night.

Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon said commissioner Larry Scott was on his way back Friday morning from Boise, where he attended the game and saw the altercation.

"The commissioner has broad authority concerning misconduct," Muldoon said.

As Boise State began celebrating on their famous blue turf, defensive end Byron Hout yelled in Blount's face and tapped him on the shoulder pad. Before Broncos head coach Chris Petersen could pull Hout away, Blount landed a right to Hout's jaw, knocking him to his knees.

Blount also had to be restrained by police officers from fans heckling him on the way to the locker room after No. 16 Oregon's 19-8 loss to the No. 14 Broncos.

Oregon University president Richard Lariviere calling Blount's behavior "reprehensible" in a statement Friday.

"We do not and will not tolerate the actions that were taken by our player. Oregon's loyal fans expect and deserve better," Lariviere said. "The University of Oregon Athletics Department is reviewing the situation and will take appropriate action, reflecting the seriousness of the player's behavior."

After the game, Blount apologized for his actions.

"It was just something that I shouldn't have done," said Blount, who had eight carries for a loss of five yards. "I lost my head."

Boise State announced Friday that Hout would not be suspended for taunting Blount. School spokesman Max Corbet told The Associated Press in an e-mail that Petersen planned to spend time with Hout this week to help him learn from what happened.

Oregon team officials had no comment Friday morning, and practice was scheduled for later in the day.

Mike Bellotti, who stepped aside as head coach to become Oregon's athletic director this summer, said Thursday night he would consult with the Pac-10 concerning discipline for Blount.

Oregon coach Chip Kelly said he did not see the punch.

I will see it on tape and make a decision on what we need to do with him," Kelly said. "There is no place for that. I do not condone that."

In February, Blount was suspended indefinitely from the team for "failure to fulfill team obligations." Bellotti did not share any details, elaborate at the time, but Blount reportedly missed offseason team meetings.

He was reinstated before spring practice.

Blount, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound transfer from East Mississippi CC, rushed for 1,0002 yards and a school-record 17 touchdowns last season.

Nice sucker punch Oregon. Stay classy.

― mayor jingleberries, Thursday, September 3, 2009 10:26 PM (Yesterday)

well let's see here...

As Boise State began celebrating on their famous blue turf, defensive end Byron Hout yelled in Blount's face and slapped him on the shoulder pad.

I think your definition of both "classy" and "sucker punch" are pretty flawed imo, mr. bojingles...

*⁂((✪⥎✪))⁂* (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 5 September 2009 02:52 (sixteen years ago)

o pls...tell me he said somethin terrible or abt dudes mama or somethin and maaaybe u have a point

johnny crunch, Saturday, 5 September 2009 02:54 (sixteen years ago)

A sucker punch is when you don't expect it and/or deserve it...

Classy is winning with dignity and good sportsmanship rather than talking a whole lotta punkass shit to a dude who will drop you like a rag doll.

I'll tell you what, find out what that dude said before he got Zidane'd and we probably will have a more enlightened conversation.

*⁂((✪⥎✪))⁂* (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

just the look on that dude's face before he got socked tells me he deserved it

king dom, come (k3vin k.), Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:07 (sixteen years ago)

The Oregon dude said that he didn't hear what the Boise State dude said, so it doesn't really matter what it was, because the content of it isn't why he was attacked.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

splitting hairs man. whether or not the exact meaning of the phrase sucker punch exactly applies is not a v. interesting convo either.

if you want to be specific, the stay classy comment posted had nothin 2 do w/ boise acting classy.

watch blount in the video, dude is back pedalling immediately thinkin he got away w/ somethin...its a pretty punkass move, regardless of what he's responding to

johnny crunch, Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

let me back up a second, I'm not condoning the punch...

just the whole "classy" vs. "sucker punch" verbiage being thrown around needs to be examined. There is no good vs. evil here, it's two stupid asshole football players going at it. The media is making it into a black/white issue I'm afraid.

*⁂((✪⥎✪))⁂* (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, he's backing away just like any boxer would after he knocks a dude down. also he probably realized "shit, i just punched a dude on tv" and tried to save himself

xp idk if it's a black/white issue or not...only the ppl down on the field know that. kind of a shitty thing to say if you don't know that's not what it IS about. if he said something racist this is obv way huger

king dom, come (k3vin k.), Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:18 (sixteen years ago)

xp meh i heard mark may and lou holtz criticize boise saying their coach should discipline that guy

johnny crunch, Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:21 (sixteen years ago)

So the private planes are arriving, satellite trucks are showing up, and there are a couple hundred RVs tailgating in town right now. All for a what should be a horrible ass-kicking to begin a season of serious ass-kickings.

joygoat, Saturday, 5 September 2009 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

I've decided that Greg Paulus is the Brett Favre of college football. The announcers want him to win SO BAD. He is such a great leader great leader gutty leader great guy LOOK AT HIM HUGGING THE REFEREE OMG.

Too bad he threw an interception in the end zone in overtime.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 September 2009 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

i feel bad for anyone that chooses college over the nfl and then gets hurt. i'd even feel bad for tim tebow, although not urban meyer.

a terrible camera... with fangs and shit... (ytth), Sunday, 6 September 2009 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

I can't tell you how much I'd love to see LSU drop a game in week 1. That would immediately make the SEC West a 2-way competition between the Tide and Ole Miss.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 September 2009 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

plus, lsu has an annoying habit of celebrating after every defensive play. they just gave up a pass for 8 yards and trash-talked the guy after tackling him. i'm still 99% positive that they'll pull away soon and win by 2-3 touchdowns, but i'd be really happy if they lost.

Cal/Maryland was a bloodbath. Didn't see that coming.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 6 September 2009 08:33 (fifteen years ago)

it should have been a bloodbath last year too, tbh. kevin riley looked very good.

iatee, Sunday, 6 September 2009 08:48 (fifteen years ago)

good for cal - hopefully the pac 10 looks a little better this year.

how far does oklahoma drop in the poll? i think they'll end up somewhere in the high teens.

a terrible camera... with fangs and shit... (ytth), Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

high teens sounds right. it's always difficult to rank a team when the star player is hurt. regardless, the poll doesn't have much meaning until these teams play srs games.

iatee, Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

I'm thinking that the Pac-10 is going to be a two-team league this year, especially with Oregon losing Blount. I thought maybe Cal could beat USC, but Barkley did not look like a true freshman out there.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 6 September 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't watch the game, but there's not much you can learn from crushing SJSU. The safe bet is that USC will crush Ohio State and Notre Dame (lol) and have a harder time w/ Pac-10 teams. I don't care how good he is - Barkley's gonna make mistakes - we're playing them relatively early + our pass rush was looking great.

iatee, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

love it! Shepard Smith does the voiceover for the Ole Miss college commercial.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 September 2009 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

iatee are you a USC fan? i am too. and i agree with you - i'm putting aside nc game hopes and hoping that USC wins the pac-10 (like during booty's 1st year)... if the BCS falls into place w/florida or texas losing, then great. but barkley will have an off game at some point, and usc will lose- it's inevitable.

a terrible camera... with fangs and shit... (ytth), Monday, 7 September 2009 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

haha I am a hardcore cal fan, so on a purely philosophical level I am veryyyy much not a usc fan and love watching their yearly loss to not-very-good pac-10 teams. but I also really like watching usc play (esp non-conference...) - team is always super entertaining. I wish tedford were willing to take the kind of risks pc does.

just in terms of talent/capability/showing up for big games, I think usc would have been a contenda if they played the national champs each of the last 3 years. imo the pc era would be a *lot* different if college had a playoff system.

it's too early to say what the cal/usc game is gonna look like, but heyyy we might actually have a reliable qb for the first time since aaron rodgers.

iatee, Monday, 7 September 2009 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, riley looked good last night. living in the bay area, i root for cal unless it's against usc. you had sad "we play them early" and i thought the "we" referred to USC, but it makes as much sense that it was referring to cal.

a terrible camera... with fangs and shit... (ytth), Monday, 7 September 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

Miami/FSU was a GOOOOOOOD game, damn.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't watch the game, but hey . . . maybe we're pretty good.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 8 September 2009 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

When I was in undergraduate, we won two NCAA Championships and lost I think a total of 3 regular-season games. We're a little off that pace now, but I'm optimistic.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 8 September 2009 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

Ur qb's got chops. And that wr Benjamin is hot shit.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

I need to seek out a video of the game. The quarterback only 190 pounds! I worry about him getting injured.

I just want us to be better than USC and Florida, especially Florida. We've got a ways to go.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 8 September 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

GREAT game... espn360.com will have a replay of it up this week. fsu needed a bush-push at the end, surprised jimbo fisher didn't think of that.

(Mr. Crunch OTM).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

I might admit I sorta enjoyed the year Tampa Bay won the SuperBowl.

I kept thinking back to their first season, when they went winless. In a post-game conference, a reporter asked the TB coach what he thought of his offense's execution. He said, "I'm all for it."

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

Good times.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

Deep down, I know there's going to be a day when Nick Saban abruptly departs UA for a better job and then I can go back to hating him and thinking he's a slimeball. But after all the shitty coaches we had between Gene Stallings and Nick Saban, I'm just glad to be winning again.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

He is a very good college coach.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

At 1 -- 0, I'm very happy with Randy Shannon, tho.

Check back with me after our first loss.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

I kept thinking back to their first season, when they went winless. In a post-game conference, a reporter asked the TB coach what he thought of his offense's execution. He said, "I'm all for it."

johnny crunch, Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

Also, it was pretty sweet seeing UCLA come in and stuff a win down Lane Kiffin's stupid throat this afternoon. It will be extra sweet seeing Florida do it next weekend.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

There, I must disagree. I hope the Vols edge past the Gators, 218 -- 7.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

I'm FOR any team who pounds Tennessee, it doesn't matter who.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:19 (fifteen years ago)

I'd have a very hard time figuring who to hate more in a Florida/Alabama game.

Or a USC/Ohio State game. Or a Notre Dame/Penn State game. Or a . . . oh, well.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 13 September 2009 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

i don't hate it but i'm still not sure why people love it so much. do you have to be from the south? i don't even have a team to root for most of the time, murrland terrapins are not very good (probably gonna go to a game or two anyway though)

daria, actually (daria-g), Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

daria, actually (daria-g), Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

a good college football game is so much more exciting than a good nfl game because:
a. losing any game fucks you pretty srsly so it's always 5x more tense than a regular season nfl game. like, today notre dame and ohio state just lost all hope for a national title. (woohoo)
b. the margin between good teams and bad teams is really large and so underdogs are actually underdogs. even the worst nfl team is still a buncha millionaires who are among the best football players in america.

iatee, Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

it does help to have a good team to root for tho

iatee, Sunday, 13 September 2009 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

do you have to be from the south?

Not necessarily, but it helps. Or maybe the midwest. Also, Texas. But I'd say in general, it's the southeast where college fandom is probably the most hardcore.

I love the NFL too, of course, but I have no home team and never have (except the few years I lived in Nashville, but even then I didn't feel particularly drawn to the Titans). Of course there are some teams I like more than others, and a couple I really do hate, but I still don't feel as close to it as I do the college game.

I'd say the love for college ball in the southeast is probably on par with the love for the Premier League in Britain.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 13 September 2009 05:14 (fifteen years ago)

OSU's D that last drive was a-fucking-bysmal. I see USC march down the field like that and I remember how much I hate college football.

maryland will probably qualify for a crummy bowl game, but they're not exactly good. the friedgen offense is pretty fun to watch when it's clicking, though. losing heyward-bey to the nfl hurt.

j.q higgins, Sunday, 13 September 2009 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

iatee, Friday, 18 September 2009 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

No doubt we're coming back. Many of us will never forgive Larry Coker for killing the program. We were poised, at the beginning of the decade, for another era of dominance. I'd love to see the 2000 -- 2001 Hurricanes vs. the great USC or Florida teams of this decade.

AND THEN LARRY COKER RUINED US IN WAYS NCAA SANCTIONS NEVER COULD.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 18 September 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

(Like Pres. Obama is doing to America, Coach Coker destroyed the U. from the inside).

iatee, Friday, 18 September 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

Sure, sure. But look, this team -- say, two years ago -- might have been 0 -- 2 at this point. The Hurricanes are recruiting well, again. Only a matter of time, I hope, before we're back in the Nat'l Championship discussion annually.

Jake Locker always kind of seemed like he was going to be terrifyingly good at some point, except he kept getting hurt and being surrounded by less talented people, and yeah, now Washington is a little scary.

I wonder if the other Pac-10 teams are going to try and play USC by trying to kill Barkley so they can get to Corp. Because Corp was not really good.

C-L, Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

"not really good" = understatement of the day. that was the worst showing by a usc qb since before carson palmer... even booty during the UCLA loss in 2006 looked better. it's a shame that once barkley and taylor mays get healthy, usc will probably look pretty good again, but this loss will hold them out of any meaningful postseason games.

a terrible camera... with fangs and shit... (ytth), Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

jake locker is retarded for choosing to stay in washington, but yeah he is good. still I'm not sure washington is a great team, game said more about usc than anything else.

iatee, Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

Oh no, do not get me wrong, Washington would not have won that game without Aaron Corp, but I just remember watching Jake Locker as a freshman and thinking "Holy crap that dude is gonna be a monster", and today on that last drive it basically gave me the impression that if you give UW a chance to win on the last possession, you are playing with fire. Whether the rest of UW can get good enough in the next couple seasons to make that a possibility every game is a different story.

C-L, Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

Last year, Washington lost every game they played.

This year, after three games, they are ranked.

Is it possible to lock up Coach of the Year after only three games?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 20 September 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

glad uw is ranked this week... i thought they might not be, since the media likes to play the "look at this pathetic team usc lost to" card a lot more than they like to give teams credit for playing better than usc.

miisissippi's #4 ranking was based on wins over...memphis and southeastern louisiana??? I dunno if this is really such a shocking upset - ole miss might not even be a top 25 team when things play out.

iatee, Friday, 25 September 2009 06:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah pre season rankings can eat a dick

i mean it was basically based on beating a florida team that probably overlooked them, an LSU team that got fucked over at QB and wasn't even that good to begin with and a texas tech team that certainly wasn't as up for a bowl game as ole miss

basically they had lots of hype + a road thursday night game is always a recipe for a disaster. they did not look good.

Apparently a large percentage of UM's current team are Shannon's recruits from Northwestern HS (''NWHS''). If we can keep drawing heavily from NWHS's best players, we will be in BCS Title contention very -- very -- soon.

so what game should i watch saturday?

daria, actually (daria-g), Friday, 25 September 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that's what I hear. Back in "the day," UM focused almost exclusively on South Florida, and let FSU and UF and out-of-state programs try to skim talent from the rest of the state. It worked well then, we got away from it during Larry Coker's tenure, and it seems to be working well again (but the jury's still out, so to speak).

(xp to J0rdan).

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 25 September 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean there's a small truth to that. i mean a big part of the problem is that the local players that we did get weren't very good. also it's pretty easy for randy shannon to put an emphasis on local recruiting the year when all the NW kids were graduating. that said, this staff definitely has a better idea of the kind of player that they want and they're making hay right now with some players - jacory & laron byrd chiefly - that were passed over by a lot of schools (jacory wasn't offered by either UF or FSU & byrd is from louisiana and wasn't offered by LSU, UF, bama, TENN etc)

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 September 2009 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

daria it's a pretty bad week for college football tbh

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 September 2009 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

I think the Bama/Arkansas game will be another shootout, maybe not as much as the Georgia/Arkansas game last week, as Bama has a much better secondary, but I think there's gonna be a lot of passing...and that's always fun to watch.

Miami/VaTech will be good too, though I definitely think the Hokies are in over their heads this year.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

daria - cal/oregon, obv! should be high scoring

iatee, Friday, 25 September 2009 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 25 September 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

jacory wasn't offered by either UF or FSU

This seems amazing to me, in retrospect. But maybe Jacory will run out of gas, or defenses will figure him out, or maybe he's too undersized for the position . . . ?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 25 September 2009 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

Miami/VaTech will be good too, though I definitely think the Hokies are in over their heads this year.

Wow I hope you're right. It would be a huge bummer to lose this game and have to face Oklahoma.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 25 September 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

This seems amazing to me

Not me. I think a lot of quarterbacks are passed over by schools because they're already committed to the quarterbacks they have. I get it in UF's case (Tim Tebow will be followed by John Brantley, who's currently being groomed to take over) and FSU's as well (who've finally got a decent guy with Christian Ponder and have Will Secord waiting in the wings).

A lot of great qb's end up in struggling programs and smaller schools simply because there's not room for everybody, especially if these qb's ever want to see playing time.

Jacory probably didn't fall through the cracks elsewhere. He just wasn't needed.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but Jacory was so young. UM had that other very highly-touted kid (Robert Marve, maybe?), who I think was older than Jacory. If Marve had worked out, Jacory wouldn't have started for some time, anyway. In other words, had UM's quarterback progression been as expected, Jacory wouldn't have become the starter any earlier than he would have at, say, UF (once Tim Tebow graduates). My time-lines are based on memory, tho, so I might be wrong about all this. If so, I blame senility and/or stupidity.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 25 September 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

Marve is cursed in just about every way, and Randy Shannon probably knew it at the time. They brought in Jacory to meet a need.

(Marve is currently on the Purdue roster, sitting out a year btw)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

eh it's also just super difficult to scout hs kids, you don't have to blame senility

iatee, Friday, 25 September 2009 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

This is also true.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

I was out-of-the-loop at the time. What was Marve's problem?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 25 September 2009 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

From wikipedia:

Miami

Marve was redshirted for his true freshman season in 2007 after a summer car accident in which he suffered a broken arm. He was 6-5 as a starter during the 2008-2009 season,[1] splitting his playing time with true freshman Jacory Harris. He started every game except the season opener against Charleston Southern, for which he was suspended. Marve finished the 2008 regular season with 9 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also had 1,293 passing yards on 116 completions on 213 attempts, for a quarterback rating of 107.19. Miami accepted a bowl bid to play the University of California in the Emerald Bowl, but Marve did not play in the Bowl after being suspended for academic reasons on December 18, 2008.

Transfer

On December 30, 2008 Marve announced his intention to transfer from Miami; it is believed that he was considering the University of Florida, the University of Tennessee, and Louisiana State University.[4] In response, Miami stipulated that he could not transfer to any school in Florida, the ACC, or the SEC. Marve appealed to the school's athletic appeals committee,[5] and after much negative publicity, Miami lifted part of the transfer limitations to allow him to transfer to any school in the SEC, except the University of Florida, the University of Tennessee, and Louisiana State University. Those three SEC schools were singled out based on beliefs by Miami that individuals representing the Marve family contacted those schools regarding Marve's potential transfer. The in-state ban still stood, however, except for the University of South Florida and the University of Central Florida, to which he was allowed to transfer. [6][7] In January, Eugene Marve told the Miami Herald that Bob Stoops, head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, had expressed an interest in Marve's transfer. Eugene also suggested that Marve was considering Oklahoma State University, Purdue and the University of South Florida.[8][9] Shortly after Eugene's announcement, Bob Stoops was interviewed by Tulsa World and stated that he had not contacted Robert or his family and had no interest in recruiting Robert Marve. Stoops expressed confusion as to how such a rumor could have started and commented that he was satisfied with the quarterbacks he currently had.

Purdue

On May 20, 2009, Marve announced he would transfer to Purdue University, despite his father having said he had prostate cancer and wanted Robert playing closer to home.[11] On July 21, 2009, Marve tore his ACL and will red-shirt the 2009 season.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

marve was a good but immature kid who just wasn't as good as jacory.

jacory was seen as being too skinny & too weak & helped out by his surrounding talent and i think he's certainly one of those players that pops up like... idk drew brees or something where the stories will inevitably turn to (why wasn't this guy highly recruited??). i mean, i think in a sense we got lucky that he was in our backyard & was with A TON of players that we wanted. if he was from tampa we might not have offered or if he went to like coral gables we might not have offered. but the comparisons to ken dorsey are pretty apt. we took dorsey from cali when we were considerably worse than ucla and washington, were about equal to usc but on the other side of the country etc. i hate to use the cliche but he's just a *contemplates killing self* "winner" - i mean he's super smart & accurate & mature beyond his years.

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 September 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

it wasn't until very very late in the game that rivals even bumped jacory up from 3 stars to 4 stars but i think it was basically apparent from the start that jacory was eventually going to take over the job - the players are kidn of opening up about it now but you could tell in how marve didn't play in the second half of a lot of games last year

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 September 2009 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

it seems a bit early to compare jacory to drew brees! or even ken dorsey. I dunno I haven't seen all of your games and he looks like a solid college qb, but miami still needs a few big games before jacory can be considered anything beyond a good qb.

iatee, Friday, 25 September 2009 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

basically the comparison i'm making is that he's less physically talented objectively than other guys (certainly marve) but he makes up for it with the "intangibles" that make sportswriters like ken dorsey - certainly he has a long way to go to reach that of course

I am not sure whether to compare Tebow to Job or to Jesus in the wilderness.

It's probably the latter.

I think Damien Thorn is a better comparison point.

iatee, Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Big Ten channel can show all the non-revenue sports, though. Sometimes you can watch like, college wrestling, which is weirdly great! Plus when they run out of sports they show bizarre student programming, like whatever random crap the University of Wisconsin student-run TV channel produced.

C-L, Saturday, 3 October 2009 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

college is such a qb based game

like, lsu should be amazing but they have like tennessee titans-era vince young playing qb

autogoon delight (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 3 October 2009 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

I had fun watching the UM/MSU game this morning at the bar. Michigan played like shit and the defense fucked up too much and the offense had some weird tactical calls.

Still, enjoyed that the game went into O/T even so, and MSU still won. Ah well.

The Big Ten channel chyron/on-screen graphics are remarkably disappointing.

Looking ahead on the schedule, I see North Carolina and I guess the University of South Florida (5 -- 0 now, with a win over FSU) as the biggest hurdles. If we clear them, we could be 11 -- 1.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 4 October 2009 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

but srsly - is he gonna be healthy enough to play again one day?

iatee, Friday, 9 October 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

i would imagine so. the mental part of it for him will probably be the biggest hurdle. the neck feels like such a fragile part of the body.

it takes a nation of 51 to hold us back (J0rdan S.), Friday, 9 October 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but I wonder if his neck is still gonna be tender and whether or not it might get srsly screwed up in a big hit? haven't read anyone talk about this in any news article - I guess we're still at the 'glad he's alive' stage, but it'd be nice to know if he still had some NFL dollars in his future.

iatee, Friday, 9 October 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

supposedly he'll make a "full" recover, which i assume means he will play again. i don't know if he'll be able to handle the nfl, though. surprising thing for me is that he's wearing a shirt with a barbell on it. you'd think he'd have a phobia or something.

bama-ole miss has been okay. wisconsin 10 ohio st 7 has been as much of a snoozer as that would imply. i think every team in the big 10 is dogshit tbh. iowa is getting shine off beating a penn st team that has inflated ranking based on tradition, ohio state's looks like it couldn't complete passes against a high school team, michigan is gonna be great but they're young right now with a bad defense.

also, 72 font O_O at what crompton did against uga today

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah they shouldn't/won't be a ranked team

iatee, Saturday, 10 October 2009 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

To put Crompton's 310-yard, four-touchdown day against one of the SEC's (and therefore one of the nation's) most talented defenses, some perspective: Before last week's fourth-quarter rally against Auburn, Crompton had never topped 200 yards passing against an SEC defense; that was also the first time he'd thrown multiple touchdown passes (two) in a conference game. For his career, Crompton had completed slightly fewer than half his passes against SEC opponents, with more interceptions (8) than touchdowns (7) and a dismal 99.5 efficiency rating to solidify his name as the one most synonymous with contemporary college quarterbacking failure. His efficieny rating today? Two-hundred twelve, and that's with a Georgia interception return for touchdown off a flubbed reception that wasn't really the quarterback's fault.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

ole miss offense looks terrible. in fact every time i've watched, ole miss offense has been terrible. going to get out of the house and skip the second half.

i really wish the tv stations would actually show the halftime shows with the marching band! i also wish i was at a game today. my moms went to a WVU game lately & actually enjoyed it despite knowing next to nothing about the rules of football.

iatee, Saturday, 10 October 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

exactly. i love a good college marching band. especially the southern bands. i was in marching band @ high school in a completely football-crazy town, so.. imho the band should get some airtime, that's a long day you spend there at the stadium & people don't appreciate.

daria, actually (daria-g), Saturday, 10 October 2009 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

more than giving them their due, it'd also just make the broadcasts way more entertaining. yeah it'd take away money from commercials, but it'd increase the potential audience if they made these things more about the 'event' as less about the actual game. this is why people who don't care about football can still enjoy the super bowl.

iatee, Saturday, 10 October 2009 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

true that. i mean, one of the few redeeming things about the fedex field experience is that redskins have their own marching band.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

boise beat a *good* oregon team already...I dunno I think they'd be competitive, but it's def a ?

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

boise would not get in over these one-loss teams: florida, texas, usc, ohio st, alabama, lsu, virginia tech, usc - also a potential for an undefeated cincy, tcu or iowa, all of which would get in over boise

their only win is gonna be @ home over oregon. their conference is terrible this year.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:53 (fifteen years ago)

dez is gonna be a real big player in the nfl imo

iowa's gonna lose to osu imo

johnny crunch, Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

jord, if they were ranked where they usually are, I'd agree with you - but texas, florida, alabama are all gonna fall in their losses, and boise might end up #2 for long enough that people will actually just accept it as truth.

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah idk, i mean they already got jumped by VT. i wouldn't be surprised if that continued to happen.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah timing matters, you (/VT) can recover from early season losses, but these losses might be too late? I dunno it's not like a sure or likely thing, but I think it's worth considering.

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Sunday, 11 October 2009 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

true. im fairly convinced fla is gonna win again, deservedly

johnny crunch, Sunday, 11 October 2009 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

i'm with johnny. it would be ridiculous imo. they might be pretty good but it's not fair for lsu/uf/bama to have to play the competition week in & out that they do and boise only has to beat one team & roll over a bunch of other garbage teams. if anything they've gotten to the point that tons of traditionally successful big six schools are in that their ranking is based as much on their name then on their performance.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

(true w/r/t the competition I mean)

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 04:06 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean, the prevailing theme of the past three or so seasons here has been that any team can lose at any time to anybody. that doesn't really apply to boise. it's not fair to them but it's also not fair to the 'major' teams.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

I mean it's also unfair that boise state isn't given a shot to prove it - and it's not really their fault, they schedule as well as they can. I doubt I have to convince anyone in this thread that playoffs are the only solution, but yeah, the college postseason is hopeless and barely worth watching imo.

Boise St will never be in the champ. game until they play at least 3 BCS schools in the same season. One lousy Pac 10 game isn't going to cut it.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:15 (fifteen years ago)

how it should be imo

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

boise state doesn't have the option to play at least 3 bcs schools in the same season. I dunno it just seems absurd to suggest that the best team in the country will always and forever be a bcs school when good bcs teams are losing to boise state-like teams year after year.

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

well, byu got two big bcs schools, houston got two big ones and a smaller, beatable one (miss st.) so i don't know how true that is. and it is unfair to boise st., i think that's patently obvious, but i also think it's unfair to iowa who has to beat penn st, ohio st and michigan every year instead of hawaii, nevada and fresno state

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, fresno state barely beat wisconsin this year and they are the biggest in conference test for boise?

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:31 (fifteen years ago)

Boise State's predicament is that they can't afford to lure in beatable BCS teams and good BCS teams won't invite them in for fear of losing. The only way out of the hole they're in is to petition to join a legit conference.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:33 (fifteen years ago)

it's true cause they schedule these things half a decade ahead of time (who knows if bsu will be any good in 5 years)

+ outside of like, usc, nobody wants to play these teams voluntarily. BCS teams have nothing to gain and lots to lose.

challops: I don't think the big 10 or big east conferences are *significantly* better than hawaii, nevada and fresno state. like the gap is smaller than the gap between SEC and big 10.

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:34 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, the fact that the Big East is even a BCS conference is questionable, and the ACC and Big 10 are starting to be similarly questionable.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:36 (fifteen years ago)

the problem is that in the big six conferences, the talent gap has very much been narrowed. we see this every week - michigan taken to the brink by indiana, kansas by iowa state, lsu by miss st, texas by colorado etc etc etc. these teams have a test every week pretty much. that's just not the case in the WAC and it won't be with teams like san jose st, utah state, new mexico state, la. tech forever. it's unfair to boise but it's also unfair to the virginia techs. it's a fucked up system no doubt.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

counterargument: michigan, kansas, lsu and texas overrated!

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

sure, sure. but take USC for instance. washington is probably the second to last team in the pac 10. usc played @ their stadium w/o their backup qb and lost in a very close game. it could be the game that decides their season. if boise went into san jose st w/ their backup qb they'd still win by 30 points. they just don't have the same risks that the other teams do.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:51 (fifteen years ago)

Boise State is really on an island out there. The WAC offers no real competition. If they joined the MWC, they'd still dominate. Their only hope is the Pac-10, who would either have to kick a team out or expand to the Pac-12 by picking up someone else (which wouldn't be bad if Utah and Boise State moved into a Pac-12... would instantly make it tougher conference).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:57 (fifteen years ago)

tbh I have been on your side of this same argument before...I think I am mostly arguing for bsu because it's the only way I can envision an interesting championship game

and because today I watched a buncha clips from the fiesta bowl game cause I was looking at trick plays on youtube and that was basically the best game I've seen in my life

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

johnny - I hear byu/utah mentioned more often as a pac12 possibility.

it makes more sense w/ the state geographic/rivalry 'sets' of teams that the pac10 has going.

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

the problem with boise is that they are good enough to be up there with those teams, i think they have proved that at various points. but their "off games" never matter because their competition is so weak, usually.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

what i wish would happen, and it would be profitable, would be for the big mid-majors to defect. something llike

boise
tcu
utah
hawaii
fresno
houston
byu
nevada
troy
air force

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

like, that would be a legit conference that should get a bcs tie-in and a few teams w a legit shot at making it to the title every year

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

That would be the most trap-gamiest conference ever.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it might be a bit... TOO STRONG. idk. it would be awesome tho. if they're never gonna do a playoff, fuck, that would give those teams a legit claim imo

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:10 (fifteen years ago)

the problem is that these teams are good *now* - they might not be in 5 years. I guess that's the biggest difference - even when alabama/miami/etc. are horrible, we can expect the institutions to recover, whereas these schools don't have the guarantee to be good anything but this year.

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be happy to kick Arkansas and South Carolina back out of the SEC if anyone wants them.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:13 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, they should eliminate the big east and adopt my hybrid conference

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:14 (fifteen years ago)

cincy moves to the big 10 and eliminates... indiana?

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:14 (fifteen years ago)

for football

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:14 (fifteen years ago)

they should just eliminate the big east as a football conference!

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

I've been following a link trail around Wikipedia for over an hour learning how, when and why all the FCS conferences were formed and who's jumped into and out of which ones over the years. I guess I'd never paid close attention to any of it before because I was raised in SEC territory, which outside of admitting Arkansas and South Carolina in 1991, has been completely stable since the 1960s. (I knew GA Tech was a founding SEC member, but didn't realize Tulane also was.)

Also, counting all sports and not just football, the Big East really is BIG, damn.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

ranked teams matchups

cincy @ usf (thurs)
okla & texas
south carolina @ bama
vt @ gt
usc @ nd

+

arkansas @ UF

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

That's next week's schedule? Meh. Aside from Cincinatti v. USF (teams I know nothing about, except that having USF on the Hurricane's schedule for the last game makes me nervous), I don't think these are very competitive matchups (notwithstanding UT's ranking). Anyway, the obvious: Oklahoma; Alabama; VT; USC; Florida.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think oklahoma, VT or USC are at all obvious!!

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

Hope yr right.

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:15 (fifteen years ago)

haha I mean the california usc and assume you do too

but I will eat half a hat if the other usc game is

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

I will eat a quarter of a hat if notre dame scores more than 17 points

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

yeah idk. ND should be able to move the ball but their defense is pretty terrible against the run. i'm expecting something pretty low scoring. will def be interesting to see clausen against a real defense.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

i bet it's something like 28-17/24-10 USC

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that sounds right to me

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

I hope ND wins, then loses the rest of their games (subject to my needed them to beat another even more-hated team).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

"needing"

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

if clausen has 2 more tds than INTs he'll get serious heisman hype. if they actually win then he'll be the frontrunner.

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

that would be enough to make me quit watching cfb this year

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

me too, but tebow & bradford & mccoy have all had pretty :-( years

kushighway (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone know much about UNC and/or USF (aside from the fact they appear to be pretty good)? They appear to be the two biggest games left on Miami's schedule, and they're clustered toward the end of the regular season.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

i was at unc vs. uconn ~ unc looked shitty and had an anemic offense and should have lost. i guess they've gotten better since then. i recall their TE being good

usf is now playing a freshman at qb right? and allowed 34 pts to cincy

johnny crunch, Saturday, 17 October 2009 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

Cincinnati's ranked higher than we are, FWIW. And I think we play them there.

But yeah, it's a game I suppose we should win?

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

It's a game that scares me, is what it is.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

haha so after defending boise state earlier in this thread, I watched the tulsa game, and yeah, they're not that great

iatee, Saturday, 17 October 2009 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

I think they woulda been competitive in a championship game during that fiesta bowl year tho

iatee, Saturday, 17 October 2009 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

unc is garbage & we haven't beaten them in like 5 years so extra motivation

usf is going to be a tough ass game. they obv want to beat other in state teams and they remind me A LOT of v tech. thankfully their running is way less dominant. they have really good defensive ends, which is scary. pressure can really fuck up an offense & a game

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 17 October 2009 04:06 (fifteen years ago)

daniel, imo the games to be worried about are the ones that no one is talking about & the team is going to underestimate themselves - duke, clemson, and the scariest game imo is @ wake. they've got a very good passing game, which is def our weakness, and it's on the road. but we'll see.

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 17 October 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

(USF) obv want to beat other in state teams and they remind me A LOT of v tech

They certainly beat FSU, whereas we had a much more competitive game with FSU. USF does want to beat the other Florida teams, like U. Miami's wanted to take revenge on a number of programs that beat us while we've been down the past few years. And, of course, Va. Tech whupped us just a few games ago. OTOH, USF was just beaten badly, so . . .

Bah. This game worries me. You're right that we should also be concerned about the other games, e.g., Clemson, Wake. U. Miami has always underperformed in games against lesser teams, but at least those are games we can/should win.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

"beat-up FSU," I meant to say.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

damn bradford is just a 100x better athlete than mccoy, isnt he? like this dude

51 ways to leave ilxor (k3vin k.), Saturday, 17 October 2009 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

dan, i think it's important to note that this miami team is different than any one we've had for years. jacory has literally changed the whole attitude & outlook of the program. and that includes shannon too, whose disposition has done about 180 degrees from the past two years until now. there are going to be no more 17-10 games vs ucf or 13-10 games vs wake. that being said, just the way college football is now, it's true that most any team can beat you, esp if you're on the road. of course miami isn't good enough to transcend this, at least not yet.

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 17 October 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't even mean the recent teams. During our two dynasty-periods, we often played down to the competition. We just bloodied and smashed the top-tier teams in big games.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

(But I hear you)

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

"During our two dynasty-periods, we often played down to the competition. We just bloodied and smashed the top-tier teams in big games." sounds likes usc now (ha)... let's see how we do against notre dame today.

I'm no USC fan. I should be rooting for Notre Dame, TBH, just given where Miami is ranked.

Still, I hope you smash that team 50 -- 0.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 October 2009 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

This OU/Texas game is like a coming out party for OU's defense. Damn.

Also, Bradford out? I missed the hit or fall or whatever it was, but I'd have to think reinjuring a fairly serious injury to begin with can't be good.

johnny crunch, Sunday, 18 October 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

This Miami game is tooooooooooo close, even at 10 -- 0.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

OK, that is what I was talking about. This Jacory Harris fellow is pretty good.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

ESPN's GameCast is confusing me. Miami had 4th and 16. Next thing I see, UCF had it inside the Miami 10 (way too fast unless there was a fumble or interception (or amazing punt return, I guess)). Now it looks like UM has it again.

I am confused.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

daniel, they snapped the punt over the punter's head & ucf got the ball at the 4. then they had a -4 yd rush, an inc. pass & then we picked it off on third down

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

Got it. I see 20 -- 7 now, so "whew."

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the INT was huge. offensive line is kinda gettin wrecked tonight tho. we can't run at all.

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

I noticed that on the stat sheet. Hope it's just an odd night. We should have a decent running game, tho I know the O-Line was a concern of the team's before the season began.

A few big teams had their running games stuffed today, I notice.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

-15 yards rushing!

OTOH, UCF only has 35 yards rushing.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

the rushing total is a bit skewed cuz of sacks but yeah there hasn't been much running. would like to see cooper running tonight but i don't think he has a carry. must still be hurt.

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

Meanwhile -- while I have no expectations of an upset -- South Carolina is within strking distance of Alabama.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

Finally, some positive rushing yardage.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:17 (fifteen years ago)

yeah our actual RBs have 23 rushes for 85 yds - not very good but certainly not as drastic as the rushing stats make it look. just those sacks.

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

Harris' stat sheet looks amazing.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

Is he a legit-Heisman candidate? I haven't kept up, but I know the OU QB is basically out of it because of injuries. Making . . . Tim Tebow the frontrunner?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

(21 of 27 for 300 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

win out the season and I'd say he's a v. good candidate. another loss and probably not.

iatee, Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

he's got a really good shot of getting invited to NYC - don't think he'll win it unless we win out and get to like... #2 or #3 but that's probably not gonna happen

no hongro (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, considering the rest of your schedule...that doesn't seem too impossible

iatee, Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah. I mean, we've got NC and USF. Could slip in another game, but we should win the others. No. 2 or 3 under those circumstances doesn't seem crazy.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:26 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, Ohio State and VT are already gonna sink, Alabama/Florida/LSU all have more games to play with each other, Boise State and Cincinnati need blowout wins to keep their ranking. Miami could get there.

iatee, Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

Sure. I mean, win tonight and we should be No. 7 next week.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if Boise slips - might be no. 6

iatee, Sunday, 18 October 2009 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

Bradford out for the year. I guess he can come back for his senior year if he wants. Any consensus on where he would have gone in the draft had he not gotten hurt? I always assumed 1-3 but Im no expert.

mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

yeah right about that

brrrmuda triangle (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

He probably would've displaced Stafford and be wasting away in Detroit right now. This might benefit Bradford in the long run... he could actually play on a team that's not fucked from the ground up by getting drafted lower.

I've already convinced myself that the Rams will take Tebow.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

i think the best that bradford can hope for is that daniel snyder breaks the bank and trades like 68 draft picks to jump up to #1 to get him. which would be ironic & kind of fucked up considering his part native american heritage.

or else he's gonna, uh, end up on the rams, yeah (sorry, sam!)

brrrmuda triangle (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

i guess there is a possibility that the titans will dump VY and take him. that would be dope imo.

brrrmuda triangle (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Vikings look at qbs in the draft too.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

jeez, when will the Redskins finally change their damn name?

Anyway, if Bradford's going to end his season and declare for the draft I don't think he'll go anywhere near #1. First round probz, but he'll have to make a strong case for himself at the combine.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

'10 is going to be relatively rich for QBs, but a lot of them have issues: Bradford's health, McCoy's decision-making, Pike's health, Tebow's ability to play in a pro system, Locker never having accomplished anything, etc., etc. There are going to be a shit-ton of teams gambling on dudes.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

i think mcshay said that locker would be the first qb taken if the draft was right now. i think bradford will end up emerging at the top. also it obv really depends on who gets top picks. detroit, tampa, buffalo, oakland, kansas city won't be taking QBs. there are some wildcard potential QB teams like carolina, cleveland, seattle and tennessee.

i think there's gonna be a lot of defensive players & lineman taken at the top

eric berry
gerald mccoy
SUH
carlos dunlap
russell okung
ronaldo mcclain
taylor mays
greg hardy

brrrmuda triangle (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think Carolina's a wildcard at all. They'll take a qb in the first round if a good enough one remains.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

they could def get mccoy (i'm not sold on him personally) or clausen where they will be at

this is basically true w/ any qb pick ever though. recent sure things: alex smith, matt leinart, jamarcus russell, vince young...

Of course, but those guys all went pretty much where they were "supposed" to be drafted, based on consensus of scouts before the draft. Whereas I think this year you're going to see a lot of guys going way beyond their perceived draft value because of need.

Especially when you consider that the free agent market for QBs is going to be dire. Can you think of one good QB who isn't locked up long-term?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

The 2007 QB draft is pretty weird, btw:

Round 1:
Russell: sucks so far
Quinn: sucks so far

Round 2:
Kolb: totally invisible until playing pretty well recently.
Beck: what happened to this guy
Stanton: Liked him so much they drafted another QB in the first round two years later.

Round 3:
Edwards: Seemed like a steal, then the wheels came off.

Tyler Thigpen and Troy Smith later on... bad draft.

I doubt that would happen (this year)

The end of that Iowa game was pretty wowsers, though.

Of course I'm partial to Alabama, and want to see them make it every year, but if they don't, I'd love to see a TCU or Cincinnati get into the game and play Florida or Texas really hard.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:48 (fifteen years ago)

today was a weird day - i was watching the miami game during all the other games today so i missed a lot of everything but

really impressive win by penn st imo - i've been begging on iowa because of their big win only being over psu who hadn't even beaten a team that was gonna make a bowl & i thought michigan was gonna play them tough & maybe even win so that was a dope murder by penn st

didn't see much of the bama game, no idea how in the world that ended up that way, bama has mad issues at QB, they should put julio jones at wildcat imo and go crazy with him & ingram & richardson. i'm v impressed by how disciplined kiffin's game plans have been - the UGA win prob assuaged him for the whole year but vs both bama & florida he seemed to be willing to take on all criticism for a really unadventurous offensive attack because it's going to keep them in the game always

didn't see any of the iowa game (was at the mizzou game, i got there right at kickoff cuz of the miami game & it was so packed that i was sitting on the grass behind the endzone behind the makeshift bleachers so i couldn't see anything and had to watch the game on the jumbotron - felt kinda surreal to see texas in person tbh - i did get to move at half when mad ppl vacated the joint but by then i was already thinking about sandwiches) but whoever they play in a bowl is going to smoke the shit out of them i truly believe - if it's USC it's gonna be another 30 point ritual sacrificing at the altar of jim delaney, but i'll be shocked if they make it thru - pretty sure ohio st will snatch them

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:48 (fifteen years ago)

i think the only way that the title game can be salvaged this year is if tcu/boise/cincy makes it vs bama/texas/florida - it will feel like a real ideological fight at that point - if it's uf/bama vs texas/usc it's just gonna be a super letdown - there might not be one interesting BCS game this year, depending on how it plays out

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:51 (fifteen years ago)

actually I'd like to see bama vs. usc

iatee, Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:52 (fifteen years ago)

yeah okay i agree w this

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:52 (fifteen years ago)

uf / usc woulda been greattttt a few years ago, as I mentioned earlier. today it would just be two good teams that aren't as good as they were not that long ago.

iatee, Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

i think USC might hon be the best team - if barkley doesn't get hurt (and corp wasn't as bad as he is) then they beat washington and are likely ranked #1 coming out of this week

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I hate usc but basically watch them close cause I'm a pac10 stan, and I don't think there's been a point in the last 4 years where they wouldn't be capable of playing *any* team in the country. PC era could have 5 national championships by now if it weren't for like, 4 games.

iatee, Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, you could rightfully say that florida loses to arkansas if tebow doesn't play in that game, bama could've lost today if their backup was playing, texas could've lost to OU w/o mccoy, so i really don't think that the uw loss reflects that poorly on usc

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 25 October 2009 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

bama would've lost today if it weren't for one dude jumping at the right moment! the fact that this alone is the difference between them being "the best" and ranked #10 or something is pretty retarded.

iatee, Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:02 (fifteen years ago)

My dad dropped a new football tale on me today.

Background: ol' dad was both a placekicker AND a center in high school (which is hilarious, because he's only about 5'10" and 180) and then was a second-team kicker for Bear Bryant at Alabama between '68-70. He never saw any game time, sadly. :(

But today during the game he told me that after college he went to an open tryout the Dallas Cowboys held in Birmingham, even after he already had a job as an aerospace engineer and my mom was pregnant with me. They kept him around to the very end of the day before cutting him. LOL, my dad might've been a Cowboy... YUCK!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

did you thank him for saving your family's reputation?

iatee, Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

I should've. Playing for Tom Landry probably would've been pretty okay, though.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

does he have any bear bryant stories?

iatee, Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

None in first-person, because Bryant never interacted with the second team at practices. I'll ask what he's got, though.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 October 2009 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

i wish usc's offense and defense would both show up on the same day. other pac 10 teams seem to be able to stop oregon state, but that team gets under usc's defense's skin like no other.

I Endorse He-Horse (ytth), Sunday, 25 October 2009 06:43 (fifteen years ago)

eh they've ruined a few of our seasons too, oregon state always appear to capable of losing to or beating any team in the country.

and I mean, what's usc even playing for now? the holiday bowl?

iatee, Saturday, 14 November 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but I can't bring myself to root for USC.

I imagine the Pac-10 has an automatic seed in a BCS bowl, don't they? Didn't the Big East get in one year with a 3 or 4-loss team, or am I just imagining that?

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Saturday, 14 November 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

it does, but it only has one. remember when we didn't get a bcs game w/ the aaron rodgers one-loss-to-usc year? esp w/ so many undefeated non-bcs teams who are gonna be taking up spots, there's no way usc gets a bcs game.

I'm starting to understand why Mark Sanchez entered the draft when he did. He probably saw what was coming.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

i think defensive schemes are overrated personally - you either have good players who can tackle, cover & rush the passer or you don't - USC just has finally hit a real talent drop off - losing those linebackers really killed them

Pac 10, just like the SEC, eats itself alive almost every season and produces only 1 or 2 elite teams after the carnage.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:18 (fifteen years ago)

South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Ole Miss

Any of these teams (at this point in the season) could give any Pac 10 team a tough game.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:19 (fifteen years ago)

(oops, Auburn too)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:19 (fifteen years ago)

Tennessee's last two trips to california didn't go great

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:20 (fifteen years ago)

As a lifelong SEC stan, I'd be happy to let SC and Arkansas back out of the conference because they usually finish above .500 and can knock your team of choice off at any time.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:21 (fifteen years ago)

fwiw I wouldn't say that the pac-10 was as strong as the sec over the last 5 years or so, but this year the mid-tier pac-10 teams all look pretty good and the top SEC teams don't look like they did in previous years.

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to defend UT very hard because I hate them, but I think they've had a problem starting strong for many seasons. If they played a Pac-10 team around week 5 or 6, it'd work. Florida's got the same problem, which is why they always schedule Mom&Pop U games to start.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:23 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, you could say that about any team. I mean, UT didn't just lose its last 3 pac-10 games - it lost to two bottom-of-conference UCLA teams.

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:27 (fifteen years ago)

(I actually found this quite hilarious, btw.)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

I agree that this year the Pac-10 top to bottom is more formidable than in recent history, but just like every year in the SEC, even mid and bottom teams (except for Vandy, perhaps) make the better teams really work for wins.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

i think the pac-10 is way stronger & deeper this year - it may not have a singular team as good as bama or florida - although tbh i could see oregon rolling over either of those as they sometimes can, esp after the utah debacle - but cmon, the rest of the sec is so mediocre this year - lsu has a terrible offense & almost lost to washington who isn't even gonna make a bowl, georgia is in their worst season of the richt era, tennessee is whatever they are, ole miss is garbage, south carolina would get ran out of the building against a pac 10 team, arkansas has an offense but they would give up 60+ to like stanford probably

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

lsu is the penn st of the sec - the idea that they "controlled" their own destiny to make the national title was the most laughable thing ever - that offense is just fucking horrid - they controlled their own destiny to make the nat'l title like i control my own destiny to win the presidential 2012 election

Part of me wanted Oregon to win out (and Texas to lose) so it would be them vs. SEC champ in the title game, but I would be biting my nails the whole time.

UGA is maybe the worst I've ever seen them as long as I've been alive. Richt may or may not get fired, which is dumb, because he'll be hired elsewhere in three seconds.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:37 (fifteen years ago)

it may not have a singular team as good as bama or florida - although tbh i could see oregon rolling over either of those

also otm - exactly the way I see it. oregon's offense on a good day = better than any other offense in the country this year imo. maybeee not texas, but it's too hard to judge cause of their schedule.

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:38 (fifteen years ago)

As a bama fan, I don't exactly want to cross paths with TCU either (I'm not particularly scared of Texas at all, though).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 06:42 (fifteen years ago)

Speculation on Jim Rome ESPN show this week was that if Weis is out, Urban Meyer might be brought it. Now it's true Meyer has said before that ND is his dream job, I can't see him leaving UF for any good reason. He basically owns the state, is treated like a god, and the Gator program gives him anything he wants. If he did leave for ND, I would take great pleasure in seeing them lose.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:29 (fifteen years ago)

i think everyone thinks that urban is bolting eventually - i personally don't understand why he would leave either

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'd put money on urban not leaving

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:33 (fifteen years ago)

me too - he's in such a good spot there - big money school, great AD, can recruit nationally but has a v fertile home recruiting base - top conference, gets paid a ton - great fanbase - i don't see what ND offers him aside from prestige but is that worth it?

I don't believe anything any coach says until it does/doesn't happen.

obv - exhibit a. saban

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:38 (fifteen years ago)

the thing is, ND doesn't even have much more prestige than florida, and yeah, like you said, it's structurally going to be a worse place to be a college coach. risk of flaming out after a few years is so high and the upside is so minimal.

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:38 (fifteen years ago)

I believe them when what they say makes sense

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:38 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean, he has UF for life - if things only go okay at ND for a few years then is he like spurrier toiling away at a mid tier SEC school?

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

I can't get that link to go through, but I'll assume he's saying he loves UF, it gives him everything he wants, so why would he leave. Just like we've all been saying here. But he's talking to Gainesville media, right? What would you expect him to say?

Anyway, I think the chances are slim. One of Rome's guests was saying that ND probably doesn't even the money to buy out Weis and bring in anyone of worth, especially an Urban Meyer, so the chances of something like that going down for real are pretty slim.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, exact same thing when pete carroll says he's not going to the pros - you can believe them because they're in fantastic situations in top tier programs. not everyone comes w/ a mindset where they need to prove their worth on as many levels as possible, esp. not if it means taking serious risks.

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:47 (fifteen years ago)

i think one thing about carroll is that since there is no football team in LA he kinda already is in the pros in the second biggest city in america, as much as any college could be like that - i think he might have the best of both worlds kinda

house of flying jaggers (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah def

iatee, Sunday, 15 November 2009 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

I think Spurrier's, Petrino's and Saban's experiments in the NFL probably put things in perspective for a lot of college super-coaches, at least until enough time has passed for such things to be slightly forgotten. Besides, Pete Carroll's already taken a head coaching turn in the NFL that wasn't exactly spectacular.

I would be strong, and go on.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 15 November 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

When Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll met at midfield after Stanford completed its 55-21 defenestration of USC here Saturday, their conversation was brief, pointed and seemingly unsatisfying. "What's your deal? What's your deal?" Carroll said, according to two sources near enough to hear. "What's your deal?" Harbaugh retorted, and that was that.

we always have super legit rbs (even dudes nobody else gave a shit about like justin forsett are now nfl starters!) and qbs who are good enough to look like they're going to take us to the rose bowl at the beginning of the season, except they actually suck when it matters.

= basically the cal program post-aaron rodgers.

iatee, Sunday, 22 November 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

still waiting for espn to get around to covering this one so i can see what happened. i didn't think it would get crazier than the series at the beginning with the touchdown called back -> touchdown called back -> blocked fg and touchdown by lsu

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 November 2009 06:15 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, why WASN'T the field goal unit ready to go on a second's notice?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 November 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

i was flying all day today - was all like "this looks like a pretty lame day" - and then

re lsu... never really seen anything like that. my hypothesis is that les forgot that he had a timeout which is why it took him 20 or w/e seconds to call the TO & that he didn't have the FG team ready because jefferson was supposed to throw the ball into the endzone - obv that doesn't excuse them not being able to convey to him to run a fucking play - also i would buy the idea that he might not have had enough time to run the team off & the fg unit on cuz it looked like the ref took foooorreevveerrrr to spot the ball

notre dame.... man. this doesn't even seem real tbh. i don't understand how they can be so bad - sorry 2 ucoon fans but - they shouldn't be losing these games. i really do wonder if the team has just given up on weis at this point because these have been some embarrassing performances. i guess the problem with notre dame is that cosmetically they look so good - high recruiting class, amazing quarterback & wide receivers - but they can't run, pass protect that well, or do anything on defense. their whole existence is just a mirage. it's really, really bizarre. i just, idk. keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and for them to come out in a game against a good team and just dominate but it doesn't look like that's coming at all. they gotta make a run at meyer i think. gerhart might run for 250+ next week

florida & bama scheduling who they scheduled this week is fucking embarrassing imo - no excuse for it at all, not with the way that a team like oklahoma schedules

oregon & zona looked sick - is zona gonna be the ole miss of 2011?

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 22 November 2009 08:48 (fifteen years ago)

Florida, yes. Bama, no. First game of the Bama season this year was top 10 Va Tech.

Since I don't have NFLN, I'll be watching Longhorns/Aggies.

I seem to remember there being a time in my life when Texas A&M was actually good. When was that?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 November 2009 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

god I hate having to root for any texas team, but I reallllly hope the aggies pull off an upset

iatee, Friday, 27 November 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

They're a much better team tonight than I'd been led to believe.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 November 2009 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

they've always seemed quite good to me, just really, really untested. aggies aren't really a test either. game's been good so far though...hope that last drive wasn't too disheartening to bounce back from.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 28 November 2009 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

yeah rankings are basically win-loss ratios and not much else. I mean, does anyone think pitt could play w/ unranked stanford?

iatee, Saturday, 28 November 2009 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

just the fact that boise has a 'two-point theory' makes me 8-)))

johnny crunch, Saturday, 28 November 2009 03:27 (fifteen years ago)

soooooo diappointing that a&m didn't pull it off last night, considering what a clusterfuck of a national champ picture that would create. `

iatee, Saturday, 28 November 2009 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

this is basically shaping up into a decent year for the legitimacy of the BCS "hey two top conference teams went undefeated and our complex system of computers and retarded sports writers has decided that...those two teams will play!" - we really just need another clusterfuck like the lsu/usc/oka year.

something like florida/penn state/usc all go undefeated would do it...

iatee, Saturday, 28 November 2009 05:22 (fifteen years ago)

So what happens if Florida loses tomorrow, Texas drops a game to Nebraska next week, and then Florida beats Alabama in the SEC game next week? Would the three 1-loss teams still be ranked above TCU and Cincinnati, or would TCU and Cincinnati move to the 1-2 spots?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 28 November 2009 05:33 (fifteen years ago)

that'd be a pretty good mess!

iatee, Saturday, 28 November 2009 05:36 (fifteen years ago)

Go to hell,

C-L, Sunday, 29 November 2009 06:35 (fifteen years ago)

haha what

how did they get that last td?

iatee, Sunday, 29 November 2009 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

USC takes a kneeldown with about a minute left, Neuheisel uses a timeout (we had all 3 left), very next play is a deep route from Barkley to Damien Williams, which catches the UCLA secondary totally off guard and goes for 6. Carroll is all smiley and Neuheisel is basically trying to set him on fire with his eyes. Ensuing XP and kickoff both have fights break out. The last 44 seconds of the game took like 10 minutes to run off.

In retrospect it is pretty hilarious to the impartial observer, but I am not such a man. I am a man made out of RAGE.

Also for real this is gonna get sports columnisted and talk radioed to death, especially back in LA.

C-L, Sunday, 29 November 2009 06:58 (fifteen years ago)

in theory, I'm all for running up the score (esp in rivalry games.) football is not about classiness or sportsmanship and when people try to pretend like it is, it always comes off sorta clumsy.

but yeah definitely - if you're gonna get into whiny-bitch mode cause someone ran up the score on you, probably should wait at least a few games before forgetting about your newfound football values.

McCoy says he didn't know rule

NEW YORK -- Texas quarterback Colt McCoy didn't realize the football must hit something before the clock stops when he tossed away a pass at the end of Longhorns' 13-12 victory against Nebraska -- a gaffe that nearly left his team with no time to kick the game-winning field goal.

McCoy says he thought the clock stopped on a pass out of bounds as soon as it crossed the first-down marker. Had he known the rule, he says, he wouldn't have floated a long and high pass over the bench area that didn't touch down until it appeared to hit a railing near the stands.

After McCoy's pass, the clock hit :00 and the Cornhuskers began to celebrate. But one second was put back on after officials looked at a replay, enough time for Texas to kick the winning field goal.

if urban is staying at the univ in a non-coaching role, i think that severely limits the options. i would be surprised if they didn't go hard at dan mullen

otherwise i think some candidates would be

bobby petrino
kyle wittingham
chris petersen

stupid fruity crazy jag (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 December 2009 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

Those are some paultry choices, no?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 December 2009 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

Petrino is best among them, I suppose. But he is more disloyal and unpredictable (career-wise) than most top-tier coaches.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 December 2009 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i would be concerned about petrino

assuming something crazy like bob stoops leaving doesn't happen, but i think urban potentially hovering over the program would scare away big name, big money coaches

also if he's assisting in the search (which he is) then i think the candidates will be a. old assistants (mullen, strong) or coaches like him (wittingham from utah, patterson from tcu, petersen from boise etc)

stupid fruity crazy jag (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 December 2009 02:36 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think they'll hire someone who has never been a coach before (muschamp from texas, venables from oklahoma etc)

i guess shanahan/gruden loom, but idk why an nfl coach who has never been a college head coach would want a college job

stupid fruity crazy jag (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 December 2009 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

This is stupid. In 12 hours, he's gone from announcing his retirement, to taking an indefinite leave, to announcing that his leave is temporary and he's likely to return next season.

With almost any other coach, this would be A-1 flakey behavior. Not to minimize the significance of the health problems he faces (whatever they are), but this is a lot of announced changes in a shockingly short time-frame with -- presumably -- no change in his health prognosis.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 27 December 2009 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

obv he was pushed into stepping down by his family/close friends and once he did it he panicked and was all "fuck this"

just another example of how coaches (esp college coaches) just can't leave the game

stupid fruity crazy jag (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 December 2009 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, if that's true, doesn't say much for his original announcement, where -- after years of giving everything to the game -- he's finally going to prioritize "health and family."

Well, IIRC, Donovan actually quit, was signed to coach a pro-team, and he was lured back 5-days later via the largest college contract ever for a basketball coach.

And it just seems like Meyer is erratic/had second thoughts about quitting.

doomed... to fart (cankles), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

I think if we knew half of the crazy sxxt that coaches do to players even now but especially in the old days people now would be shocked. Bear Bryant or Woody Hayes would have gotten put in jail for some of the crazy sxxt they did as a coach. Cruelty is a big streak in alot of coaching. I saw some crazy stuff even in in high school back in the late 80s, especially in wrestling that if filmed would have gotten people in serious trouble now.

I'm not saying this to get Leach off the hook or anything, but criminy this is really probably not much compared to some of the crazy stuff that goes on that people don't even know about. I think Leach screwed up in that it was the wrong response to a hot button issue with football.

Good god, Craig James and Eric Dickerson played in so corrupt football program the NCAA freaking gave it the death sentence and shut it down for years. It's a bit incredulous to think this kind of thing doesn't happen.

Yeah, is this the general consensus? I have no impression of how Tebow will fare as a pro. I read that some NFL teams are v. interested in drafting him (fwiw).

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 2 January 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know if it's the consensus. i will also admit to focusing on the negative stuff i've heard about his pro potential, because i'm pretty tired of him.

a bold plan drawn up by assholes to screw morons (ytth), Saturday, 2 January 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

Bobby Bowden being interviewed is pretty classic. Comedian Tim Wilson does a pretty good imitation of him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug1EDJ1KZ44

earlnash, Saturday, 2 January 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

This game is a straight-up massacre.

I don't think anyone has much hope for the promise of Tebow as an under center, pocket passing kind of QB, because he's never done that, and his mechanics are shitty. It's possible, but it would require him to learn how to be a pro-style QB, adding timing and mechanics and all that in addition to learning an NFL playbook and learning to make NFL reads and learning to play at NFL speed. At any rate, making Tebow a pro-style QB probably requires some sort of compromise of the value that Tebow's size and strength and speed offer in Florida's offense, as would making him a FB or a TE or a LB. There's better pro-style QBs, and better TEs, and better LBs, and better FBs, so essentially they'd just be drafting the name and the physical tools and hoping that he would develop over time.

The intriguing idea to me is that someone will be so enamored of Tebow that they take the Miami Dolphin approach and structure an offense (or an offensive package) with Tebow playing the role of Ronnie Brown, with additional passing ability. A team would have to be willing to accept that the Tebow experiment could be a gigantic failure, so it'd have to be a team that's a little desperate.

C-L, Saturday, 2 January 2010 05:15 (fifteen years ago)

I think the worse thing that happened to Kordell Stewart is when they tried to make him a full time QB, he was pretty great as 'slash' and maybe that kind of role could work with Tebow. The guy is definitely a horse running out of the back field and if he could catch a pass, I'd think he would have more value than an extra QB holding a clip board. The question is how high do you have to spend a pick to give this a shot? The flip would be something like Eric Crouch, who was awesome in college in a similar option style offense at Nebraska. Tebow definitely has much more of a modern QB build, unlike Crouch.

earlnash, Saturday, 2 January 2010 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

if tebow can catch passes and play special teams, he has a future in the league. not as a QB, though. it's gonna be interesting to see what he does for i) senior bowl week, ii) the combine.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 06:30 (fifteen years ago)

Starting with the 2010-2011 season, ESPN will start airing the BCS games after outbidding Fox for the television rights.

^^this is srsly good news

weird. georgia tech has only played football once in the state of Mississippi despite being a member of the SEC for a million years.

*having been a member

voices from the manstep (brownie), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

I knew why they left, but I didn't know about the Mississippi thing. Seems kind of pompous!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

I cannot believe that SEC teams back in the day basically set their own schedule. It wasn't like there were 15 teams in the league. Unless there were!

Anyway, as a Big Ten boy, go Iowa!

voices from the manstep (brownie), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

georgia tech is really fucked by this 30 day layover

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 6 January 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

this isnt a good matchup for tech

doomed... to fart (cankles), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)

well there ya go

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 6 January 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

The more I hear on this whole Mike Leach deal, while he might be a serious jerk, I'm kind of thinking he is going to win a TON of money off Tech when the enviable lawsuit concludes.

earlnash, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 03:13 (fifteen years ago)

Jevan Snead entering the NFL draft and not playing as a senior = dumbest move ever! He'll be lucky to back up a back up the way he played this year.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 January 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, the only thing i can think of is that he's like "the coach here sucks/the offense here sucks/the wrs here suck, and i could have a worse year than i did this year so i might as well cut my losses and try and wow scouts at the combine while i still might be a 5th round pick"

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 January 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know who his circle of advisors might be, but they are RONG.

With McCluster leaving, next year could be his chance to really shine as a passer. Or they could lose every game. But I'd take the odds on him having a better senior year at Ole Miss than whatever would happen as an NFL rookie.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 January 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

Well this is an anticlimactic way to end the season.

C-L, Friday, 8 January 2010 03:18 (fifteen years ago)

Saban referring to this game as the equivalent of the 1980 US miracle team's final with Finland felt like hubris but Texas are shit without McCoy.

moron oil (Gukbe), Friday, 8 January 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

Well, I guess if nothing else Texas did get a pretty ingenious onside kick. It was almost the football equivalent of the time Chauncey Billups inbounded the ball to himself by bouncing it off Kobe Bryant's ass.

C-L, Friday, 8 January 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

i don't care about college football or either of these teams, but damn i am pulling for this freshman qb like a mofo.

richie aprile (rockapads), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:32 (fifteen years ago)

this guy! interesting game now!

kicker conspiracy (s. suisham ha ha) (daria-g), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:35 (fifteen years ago)

There is something insane about Texas and the Rose Bowl.

C-L, Friday, 8 January 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

Would normally root for the Saracen QB but I am an Alabama man. Still happy to see some life in the game.

moron oil (Gukbe), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

bummer. how could they let that guy come through totally unblocked?!

kicker conspiracy (s. suisham ha ha) (daria-g), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

Awww, Kirk Herbstreit just pulled an incredible announcer jinx.

C-L, Friday, 8 January 2010 04:50 (fifteen years ago)

Still could hold em to 3

Mel Gibson with a bad Boston accent is like my personal hell.

Okay, that should do it.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Friday, 8 January 2010 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

Good job by Alabama, but I don't think they stand a chance against Boise State in the +1 game.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Friday, 8 January 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

Colt McCoy loves Jesus.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Friday, 8 January 2010 05:10 (fifteen years ago)

okay am i the only one who thinks that it's just a biiiit o_O that all these abc people are acting like mark ingram's dad has terminal cancer or is being imprisoned in iran or some shit and not that he ILLEGALLY LAUNDERED MONEY WHICH IS A TERRIBLE THING TO DO

idk

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 January 2010 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

It's the only human interest angle they can come up with. They never once talk about Mark Ingram the high school player, and only occasionally do they talk about his freshman season.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 8 January 2010 05:36 (fifteen years ago)

in other news i have a massive crush on garrett gilbert

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 January 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)
