cutty probably already everyone (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

i think jets/dolphins is going to be one of those 16-13 games that could go either way

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

i like the edwards trade. He was leaving at the end of the year no matter what and to get two players and possibly two draft picks for a prick like him is a good deal.

Great quote from Lebron James:

"I've never said anything to Braylon at all. But for him to do that is very childish. My friend is 130 pounds. Seriously. It's like hitting one of my kids. It doesn't make sense."

Moreno, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure Lebron demanded the trade. Whatever it takes to keep the dude in Cleveland next year...

Moreno, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

Brady is the next one gone I'm betting.

brownie, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

God I hope so.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

gotta say, i'm pretty excited about the prospect of rush limbaugh buying the rams. it'd be nice to have a team i could hate w/o reserve. plus it'd be great to see him try to put a team together of all right wingers.

Moreno, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

CIN @ BAL Ravens will never be a team I love, but they're becoming a team i respect
MIN @ STL Vikings should be able to steamroll here
TB @ PHI Philly. Eagles get McNabb back right?
WAS @ CAR Carolina in a total snoozer
PIT @ DET Pitt, but wouldn't it be awesome?
OAK @ NYG Giants in a romp
DAL @ KC Cowboys, but I think this might be the upset
CLE @ BUF Bills, I guess? hard to care.
ATL @ SF Dirty Birds; this looks like a surprisingly good game!
HOU @ ARI surprised texans are the pick here, but me too
JAC @ SEA jags
NE @ DEN good test to see what both teams are made of, going broncs on record
IND @ TEN Titans to shock the world?
NYJ @ MIA Jets would have to really melt down to lose
43-19 thus far, with three (likely soon to be four) tennessee homer picks

CIN @ BAL - I'd like to take the Bengals, but get real, the Ravens getting an offense is the scariest thing in football.
MIN @ STL - Short week playing a chump team is a total trap game situation, but the Rams have not shown anything and the Vikings look pretty sharp. Minnesota it is.
TB @ PHI- Unless Philly turns the ball over left and right or the Bucs D completely figures it out this week, I just don't see how Tampa is going to keep up with the Eagles, especially if they get up 2 scores.
WAS @ CAR- Completely fugly game and the winner is going to have a winning record, giving some 'playoff' hope. It could go either way, but I would think Panthers at home.
PIT @ DET- Detroit will win again, but I don't think it will be this week.
OAK @ NYG- Giants biggest problem is going to stay healthy all year, they should win this one easy.
DAL @ KC- Haven't seen KC but I have a feeling they are improved, but I would think Dallas should win this one.
CLE @ BUF- I got to hand it to the Browns, this was a good trade in the long run. They get rid of one of the players that seems to embarass the club every week and got two players with a 3rd and 5th round pick. That's a decent haul and they dumped off some salary to boot. They also played pretty hard last week. Cheer up Cleveland maybe the bottom has been reached. I don't know the Bills, but I will take the Browns in a STRETCH upset.
ATL @ SF- This is a big game, potentially a division championship later on decided here. It seems kind of like a pickem, as I am not yet a believer in the Falcons on a tough road game, so I'll go 49ers.
HOU @ ARI- These are pretty much the same kind of club, as they have solid talent on both sides of the ball, can get some yards on offense and are terribly inconsistent. Might be a decent game to watch-- don't really have a clue who to take, so I will go with the slightly more known Cardinals, but it could end up either way.
JAC @ SEA- Jville has gotten clocked and yet came back a bit. Seattle's D looked terrible last week. This is a total pickem game, but I guess Seahawks at home being the difference.
NE @ DEN- I keep picking against Denver and they keep fXXking me, so I will take NE and watch the Broncos get me again.
IND @ TEN- I have to think the odds of the Titans starting 0-5 were pretty slight back in August. I'm going Colts as I usually do, but I don't really feel confident on it this week.
NYJ @ MIA- I have to think that the Dolphins won't be able to run on the Jets. On the other hand, I'd say defensive coordinators have a month of real work to know how to sucker Sanchez into looking stupid. This will probably be a 16-13 type game and whoever gets a big punt return or turnover probably being the winner. Even with Henne, I'm going to take the Dolphins as they are at home. This is another hard game to call.

earlnash, Thursday, 8 October 2009 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, 9-5 last week and I am 44-18 for the year. I got upset happy last week and they didn't pan out.

Apparently, Ochocinco has also been saying he's going to hit Ray Lewis in the mouth.

Now, I'm not a pro athlete. Chad is. But Ray Lewis is a fucking beast. I don't know many people who would want to start with him. I pray that Chad-O doesn't try to go over the middle on Ray.

CIN @ BAL ravens. Good luck, Bungles. Ravens off a tough loss, and in a division game.
MIN @ STL vikes. Adrian Peterson runs up 2,345 yards and 47 touchdowns. Basically, he runs sprints for the entire 60 min of play.
TB @ PHI eagles. McNabb comes back.
WAS @ CAR panthers get off the scnide, thanks to Daniel Snyd(er).
PIT @ DET fucking steelers.
OAK @ NYG giants.
DAL @ KC cowboys. Romo continues to put up fantasy sound and fury, signifying nothing.
CLE @ BUF bills. Could TO finally have a break out game? It would seem this would be it.
ATL @ SF niners. I would love to see Ryan actually live up to the hype, but he won't.
HOU @ ARI arizona.
JAC @ SEA jaguars.
NE @ DEN new england. NE is still very much for real.
IND @ TEN colts. Colts cause Jeff Fisher to question life, his purpose in it.
NYJ @ MIA J-E-T-S. Henne =/= Sanchez.

The game will commemorate the first regular season game in American Football League history, when the Broncos defeated the Boston Patriots 13-10 on Sept. 9, 1960. In honor of that game, the Patriots will be known as the Boston Patriots today.

i'm not sure i can root for them now. i hate boston

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 11 October 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

i keep imagining that even the best scenario for the raiders, like a jamarcus russell touchdown, will end poorly. like tom cable will threaten j. russ with a benching and he'll decide to go out "opening scene in last boy scout" style. (he will score 6 pts though!)

Nashville totally misrepresented to the world by the media. If you never went to the 6-8 block radius that is "Music Row," you'd never know it had anything to do with country music. Rock and urban stations there outnumber country stations about 4-to-1.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 October 2009 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

Not really. Still, nu-country > 'classic rock' and, err, 'urban stations.'

This is the Titans' night, folks.

"lol what did he say?"

Peyton was talking about how he cannot watch Eli play on a game day, as he gets too into the game. He said something like he gets mad when Joe Buck rips on Eli, which he always does when a receiver runs a wrong route. Peyton said something like "leave the play by play to Troy Aikman Joe." It was kind of bitchy and awesome.

No Finnegan = big problem

Yeah, daria, I hate to say it, but seems to me these boys are giving up. At least that's how it looks from here. I say we put Vince back in - what do we have to lose? - let him fuck up royally like we all know he will, and make next year a rebuilding year. There is NO excuse for this.

Peyton's dick needs a slop bucket beneath it, though - this shameless fawning is out of control.

The Colts really haven't played a good club yet. I like them, but I've seen this start before. SF could give them a game, but after watching the 49ers, if the Colts get up 10 points, it will be game over. They got NE & the Ravens back to back which should be interesting. That is unless the RAMS come out killer and the Colts come up lame coming off the bye (like that will happen).

the thing about the wildcat (and this is really just to follow what cad and jordan are sayin') is it's not a magic defense-confounding miracle formation; it's an answer to the question "how do i make the most of what i've got" when what you've got is no real passing game and two for-real backs, one of whom can throw the ball a little.

yeah and it really makes the defense defend all 11 players which is something that defenses in the nfl just aren't used to. it's a staple of spread/run formations that are ran by rich rodriguez and urban meyer, but nfl defenses haven't seen it. and the faking and motion just keeps everyone on the D on their heels

i wasn't sure the wildcat was going to stick in the league (and i still am not sure it will stick with any other team) but one thing i've learned from watching a good amount of fins games this year is that i'm pretty sure you gain a split second on a power inside running play with the direct snap--the little misdirection is enough to keep the defense honest. it's funny because as roger said these are pretty much some of the simplest offensive plays in football!

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

i'm glad miami radio decided to call it wildpat, since 'patcat' is spoken for. i wonder if belichick and co are sitting around in meetings saying.. idk we could try running some plays like that, mini welker was a college QB.. but this is just not done here..

maybe they'll do it, and belichick will stand there at the postgame conference stone faced "that is not the wildcat." and the reporters keep asking about it and he's like "NO. new england does not run the wildcat." then there is an adam schefter EXCLUSIVE saying 'IT IS THE PATCAT'

Gradkowski had a decent run in Tampa Bay for about a third of a season, but Gruden's never truly happy with a starting qb (grass is greener, et al). Of course, compared to Jamarcus in Oakland, any player on the roster would probably be an improvement.

Yeah, this was an epic game. After 0 -- 3, I didn't think Miami had it in them.

I see people upthread mentioning that (a) the Dolphins' great coaching overcame its sub-average talent, especially a sub-average passing game and (b) the Wildcat is tailor-made for teams with poor passing games. But Henne looked very good tonight -- strong, accurate arm; smart decisions; unafraid to make difficult throws. Did people here have a different impression of Henne, or are your comments directed primarily to the offense the Dolphins had before Henne became the starter?

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

eat shit rex ryan you fat fuck

Ryan was pretty dismissive of Miami during the post-game press conference. I mean, he gave the Dolphins a little praise -- grudgingly -- but mostly it was "We have an All-World defense and we should have mopped up the field with Miami's offense, so don't credit them, blame us."

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

i wonder if wildcat didn't work better this game b/c one of the things throwing off jets defense was that henne proved to be pretty good at throwing it downfield? however i didn't watch first half all that closely so don't recall what miami did with the passing game, maybe i'm wrong.

daria, actually (daria-g), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:34 (fifteen years ago)

it wasn't a coming-out party on the order of Rodgers vs Cowboys and he wasn't firing lazerz0rz but henne was pretty f'in' impressive - lot of (i hate myself for this) poise, really great reads of the d.

first impression: pretty good NFL arm; very good NFL head. he impressed me in the post-game too.

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

Seems to me that's talent and arm-strength, not just working conservatively within a system.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:41 (fifteen years ago)

imho seeing what the defense is giving you and taking advantage of it to the tune of a 139 rating goes beyond "playing conservatively within a system," it's awfully early to crown his ass.

he didn't will this team to victory - he got a lot of help from stout blocking and a run game that kept him from feeling too much heat from a Jets front seven that has done a pretty good job of getting two hands on the QB through the first four games.

it's VERY worth noting that the Jets often lined up on D with only 3 DBs. that's how seriously they took the run game and how willing they were to gamble against an untested Henne. He passed that test, so now he may see 4 DBs a little more often. we'll see what happens once NFL defensive coordinators have four games worth of film on him.

i hadn't see much of henne before tonight but he did exactly what a qb facing no pressure should do--make most of his throws. nice strong arm for sure.

a lot of my suboptimal personnel comments are directed at their receivers actually.

fwiw their receivers are suboptimal

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

and even those guys have mostly been put in positions where they can help the team. i'm no ted ginn fan but he and henne might be able to get the deep ball working semi-regularly.

can i say also how much i love the dolphins team celebration of imitating a dolphin that had just risen out of a tank

Jim Irsay on the Rush Limbaugh sitch:

"I come from a different era where Marvin Gaye and John Lennon were speaking about [certain things] and we've been doing a slow crawl to some of the things they talked about. We don't need to go the other way," Irsay added. "We can't go the other way where there isn't forgiveness and understanding but we gotta watch our words in this world and our thoughts because they can do damage."

wkiw jim irsay

http://www2.indystar.com/library/factfiles/people/i/irsay_jim/stories/img/irsay_band.jpg

"He was a quiet kid -- unlike his father. His father dominated the family," recalled the Rev. Larry Reuter, former headmaster of the school.

But the young man known as Jimmy had an edgier side.

Irsay has said his love of prize fighting led him to the South Side of Chicago, where he boxed in musty gyms.

By night, he developed his love of music in smoky blues joints. He fell in love with Bob Dylan's music one day in the 1970s, listening to an album with Colts tight end Raymond Chester in the team's locker room.
Now, Irsay has a studio in his Carmel estate where he records songs with professional musicians, including some from John Mellencamp's band. He has been known to take his guitar on Colts road trips and play in the hotel until 2 or 3 in the morning.

Irsay also writes poetry, was once a power weightlifter and has run a marathon. Many of his closest friends are musicians or artists, including Stephen Stills, movie director Cameron Crowe and author Hunter S. Thompson.

Those friends say they wish the public could see the Irsay they know -- a guy known to hand $100 bills to fans before games, who loves nothing better than playing music or a round of golf.

Dude also owns the original manuscript of "On The Road" iirc lol

jackie harvey peter king weighs in:

Factoid of the Week That May Interest Only Me
If Rush Limbaugh becomes part-owner of the St. Louis Rams -- which I'm told is not even close to happening right now -- he may want to do something about the organization's political leanings. According to politico.com, no NFL team in the past 20 years has donated more money to the Democratic Party than the Rams. Politico reported in September that the Rams had given $230,050 to the Democrats, or 98 percent of the franchise's total political donations. That would mean that in 20 years, the Rams have given about $4,600 to Republicans. That's not even enough for a 30-second spot on Limbaugh's national radio show.

Redwoods roster reads like a 'where are they now' list:
Shane Boyd
BJ Sams
Doug Gabriel...

It's like a 'Former Ladies of the Supremes' concert.

MikeJonze, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

Jim Kelly, Steve Young and Doug Williams are three awesome USFL QBs. I miss the USFL.

I do not, however, miss the XFL (the stupid one run by the WWE).

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 15 October 2009 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

herschel is totally who i was thinking of!

MikeJonze, Thursday, 15 October 2009 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

I thought HW was the next Earl Campbell when I watched him in college. He wasn't but he was GOOD.

brownie, Thursday, 15 October 2009 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

Herschel Walker was a different kind of runner than Earl who was a total banger. He was more like Bo Jackson or Payton, the complete back with huge speed, power and moves. Walker is kind of an exhibit on it all matters where you play to how your career turns out. The guy totally had Hall of Fame talent, but his numbers were missing those first three years, he got to Dallas when they were old playing being Dorsett for a bit and heading for the ditch and then got traded for way too much. He didn't make the dumb trade, but he kind of took the fallout for it to an extent. Walker was also got a lot of guff for being the first guy to leave college early to go pro in football. He got slagged pretty hard by the media for doing something that is pretty common practice now.

Say he finishes his senior year at Georgia - he could have won a 2nd Heisman, say then getting drafted #1 by the Patriots. The Pats were pretty decent in the mid-80s and it might have changed all sorts of things.

Talked to my Bills buddy 2-day and we went over the Bills and why they never won the BOWL!! Lot's of Bruce Smith talk and Andre Reid and the fact that the K-Gun was based around tight end McKellan.
