Stop Showing Brett Favre Being Joyous In Slow Motion!!! - WEEK NINE 2009

Arizona at Chicago* → This is going to be a very close, very boring game. Chicago might capitalize on a Warner INT and just eek out a win at home.
Detroit at Seattle* → Detroit, after losing to St. Louis, is dead to me. I hope Seattle does to them what they did to the Jaguars a few weeks ago. Shut out.
Baltimore at Cincinnati* → Before the Ravens stuffed Denver last week, I wouldn't have thought this would be so close. I'm still picking the Bengals at home, but it's definitely not a sure thing.
Houston at Indianapolis* → The Colts will lose some game this season, but it's not going to be this week.
Green Bay* at Tampa Bay → If Green Bay just repeats their losing performance from last week, it will be a winning performance in Tampa.

A more respectable 9-4 last week, 80-36 on the season.
Kansas City at Jacksonville* → The Jags weren't exactly sharp in Tennessee, but I think the Chiefs come off a bye even crappier than before.
Miami at New England* → I love seeing Miami unexpectedly embarrass the Pats every once in a while, but I'm not counting on it happening this time.
Washington at Atlanta* → Me and ten ilx0rs could beat Washington by two touchdowns and a field goal this Sunday, so this should be extraordinarily easy for Atlanta.
Tennessee at San Francisco* → Tennessee got things clicking last week, but a repeat performance will be hard against a 49ers team that got *this* close to upsetting the Colts.
Carolina at New Orleans* → Delhomme's 1-game no interception streak comes to an end in New Orleans. They're already doing a money pool in the locker room.
San Diego* at New York Giants → Even traveling all the way across the continent with a craptastic defense, the Bolts are capable of handing the Giants a fourth embarrassing loss in a row.
Dallas at Philadelphia* → I like a combination of Desean Jackson and the Philly D to knock a rolling Dallas down a peg.
Pittsburgh at Denver* → Even considering how bad Denver looked last week, I think they get back on track at Invesco and beat a hit-or-miss Steeler team.

A more respectable 9-4 last week, 80-36 on the season.

I am happy to have been quoted for the thread title but sad that it had to involve Brett Favre.

I cannot pick football game to save my life, but uh, I would guess the Falcons, Packers, and Saints will probably win. More importantly there are like five games I am totally amped to watch, so the real winner this week will probably be me.

Arizona at Chicago – Arizona is consistent at being inconsistent. They definitely have the tools, but who knows how they will do week to week. The Bears are getting pretty nicked up on defense and their offensive line is just not very good now. I think it is a hard call, but I will take the Bears out of stubbornness more than any real indication that they should win.
Detroit at Seattle – Ugly and fugly here, I’d think with all of the injuries to the Seahawk line it might keep it closer than you expect, but there is no way I would take the Lions to win on the road in Seattle at this point.
Baltimore at Cincinnati – One thing is sure about the AFC Central is that no matter who is playing, the fans hate each other. I really want to believe the Bengals will win, but I cannot be enough of a homer, so I will take the Ravens.
Houston at Indianapolis – The Texans have actually played the Colts fairly tough and either lost or won in the last second a couple of times. If it was in Houston, I would probably take the Texans but I will take the Colts to stay undefeated.
Green Bay at Tampa Bay - Tampa looked pretty poor when I saw them play a bit and it doesn’t look improved. I’d sure hope that the Packers could win this one, but you never know.
Kansas City at Jacksonville – The Jags have to be pretty deflated losing to the Titans last week. I’d have to think that Jville will be able to run on KC and that should be enough to pick up a W.
Miami at New England – I want to take the Dolphins as I just think they are kind of cool and I hate the Pats, but I have to think NE is going to win.
Washington at Atlanta – If the Falcons have any playoff dreams, they better not lose this kind of game. Falcons it is.
Tennessee at San Francisco – SF has a pretty decent defense. I got a feeling this will be a close game, but the Niners still could win their division and might have a gotten a bit of a psychological lift even in a tough loss last week. I’ll take SF. Considering how far he slid, I would like to see Vince Young have a different story from here out, as the guy was a hell of an exciting player at one point.
Carolina at New Orleans – At this point you pick the Saints until they prove them selves wrong. The Panthers can’t win this one by just “NOT PASSING” at all, which has kind of worked a bit in the last few weeks. Saints should march on undefeated.
San Diego at New York Giants - It looks like teams are scorching the Giants in the passing game and the Chargers seem to have had a bit of life. I’m taking the Giants as they have screwed me the past few weeks and I hope they are not in free fall yet. This is probably a good game.
Dallas at Philadelphia – I’ll take the Eagles in Philly, but as good as they did against the Giants you just never know who is going to show up. I’m not drinking the Dallas kool aid yet until they win a game or two like this one.
Pittsburgh at Denver – I’ll take the Steelers coming off the bye, but this should be a good game.

There is a bunch of interesting matchups and I agree it is a hard week to call.

Last week 11-2, for the season 81-35.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Jason Taylor, exultant over collecting a fumble and returning it 48 yards for a touchdown Sunday against the New York Jets, looked for the appropriate way to express himself.

Taylor greeted his trailing teammates then spun and fired the ball at the Jets logo on the wall behind the end zone.

"To score a touchdown in New York against the Jets in the last time I'll be in the hellhole they call a stadium up there before they get rid of it and move to the new one," Taylor said, "it was outstanding."

After putting in a lot of extra offseason work with quarterback Tony Romo, Williams is stunned they haven't made more progress.

"It's just not even close," Williams said. "It's not even funny. Not even close."

Williams does not believe his poor production accurately portrays his performance.

"I'm the No. 1 receiver," Williams said. "But things are just going No. 2's way."

god just stfu roy williams--you are a terrible player--why anyone even reports on you is beyond me.

"As you probably know already, sharks are pretty well suited to this whole predation thing. They have excellent hearing in the low frequencies and can pick out the sound of something thrashing around in the water well over 1,000 feet away. They're also outfitted with sensory cavities called the ampullae of Lorenzini, which register the faint electrical fields generated by living bodies. And then there's the shark's sense of smell, which though not quite as phenomenal as was once believed (you used to see a stat claiming that 70 percent of a shark's brain was devoted to olfaction, which seems to have been a real overstatement) is still plenty acute: sharks can detect some chemicals at concentrations of around one part per 25 million, and experts claim they've seen sharks go nuts over a single drop of blood in a 2,000-gallon tank."

Picking Chargers, Bengals and Broncos upsets.

9-4; 83-33. I think that's best on the board for the season, too bad my confidence-points picks haven't been bold enough.

WmC, Friday, 6 November 2009 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

ryan kalil owns

Jake's 58-38 overall as a starter (.604), but when he throws the ball 30 times or more in a game, the Panthers are 13-30 (.302). When Jake stays under 30 attempts in a game, they're 45-8 (.849).

"Really," C Ryan Kalil said when informed of the number. "Is that right?"

Then Kalil had an awesome idea.

"So what you're saying is, maybe we should have somebody counting on the sidelines," he began. "Then when we get to 29, he can run around yelling 'Stop, stop.'"

Actually, what might work better is to just run the ball, repeatedly.

really really good interview w/belichick

spergliacci (cankles), Friday, 6 November 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Cole: So if I gave you six first-round NFL draft picks, Brady might be available?

Belichick: Each guy’s price is different. If a team asks, you see what the price is. Now, is Jerod Mayo(notes) available? No, not really. But there are certain players who are young that have a certain number of years left on their contract that you want on your team, so you’re really not going to trade them. Those guys are realistically not available, no. But is everybody else available for a certain price on every team? I would say, for the most part, they probably are. Who’s willing to give that? What you want and what someone else is willing to give, that’s usually very different. In this case (the Seymour trade – in return, the Patriots get Oakland’s first-round pick in the 2011 draft), it worked.

spergliacci (cankles), Friday, 6 November 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

Belichick: Here’s the only thing I’ll say: I think to have a really good team in this league, you have to make a lot, a lot of good decisions. You have to have a lot of good people, players, coaches, whatever. You need a lot of those. Conversely, to not be competitive, you would have to have a lot of bad decisions. One bad decision is not going to do it, one bad player is not going to do it, one bad coach is not going to do it. You’re going to have to collectively, over a cumulative period of time, make a long series of bad decisions and accumulate a lot of players who are substandard for their position. There have to be a multitude of things that go wrong.

Jimmy probably said the same thing to you that he once said to me: “You’re really only competing with about 10 teams a year. If you just say out of the way, the other 20 teams will screw it up themselves. Whether it’s ownership or personnel or coaching or some combination of factors.” Ego, internal struggle, something will happen to two-thirds of the teams, that was Jimmy’s theory. That leaves you with about 10 teams that you’re going to have to really battle with. Those teams have it together. They’re going to make good decisions and if you play bad football, they’re going to take advantage of it. They’re going to find some undrafted guy or some middle-round pick or some veteran free agent who is going to spark their team. Pittsburgh is always going to be there. Indianapolis is always going to be there. They may not win it, but they’ll be there. You’re going to have to beat them. Philadelphia is going to be there. Yeah, [quarterback Donovan] McNabb might get hurt one year and they might go 7-9, but they’re going to be there. You’re still battling them on every front.

Does anyone remember when the 49ers, Giants and Bears looked like playoff teams?

There are already articles out saying the Bears should fire Lovie Smith. I'm not ready to agree on this one, but this is the third middling year in a row, which is something that seems to happen with Bears coaches, as they won't completely suck outright enough to get fired which is why Jauron and Wannstedt hung around for a while.*

*Dave Wannstedt also had that big ass stache, which I think got him the job in the first place.

HINES WARD, DO YOU HAVE TO MAKE A JOKE ABOUT EVERYTHING XD

ok another thing i love about eli? when there was still men's vogue magazine before lolrecession killed it, they put eli on the cover after he won a certain game that i will not speak of, and in a couple photos with the article, and he looked SO AWKWARD. really weirdly out of place and clearly should not be in this fashion magazine. it was great. i'm not being sarcastic, it was super cute and charming.

Why is Hines Ward smiling? His team just threw an interception when they were about to score a touchdown? I guess this is why he leads the league in smiles.

I feel like all the other good QBs are at least average-looking, and any uglier QBs are holding clipboards or playing in the UFL, but I could def be wrong.
