Miami at Carolina* → Panthers are rising, and the wildcat formation is on vacation this week with Brown out.
Pittsburgh* at Kansas City → Stillers take this one with ease after losing to the Bengals last week.
Washington at Dallas* → Skins victory can be chalked up to circumstance. A punchdrunk Cowboy team snaps out of it and wins.
Buffalo at Jacksonville* → Jacksonville does to the Bills what the Titans did to them last week. Jack Del Rio may even flip the bird.
Seattle at Minnesota* → Vikings sleepwalk through this game, Seahawks keep it close but still lose.
San Francisco* at Green Bay → I know the 49ers only barely beat Chicago, and Green Bay is a better team, but I think Crabtree may break out this week.
Cleveland at Detroit* → I really could give a shit about this game, but I'll go Lions at home.
Atlanta at New York Giants* → Atlanta is falling apart and the Giants are full-on broken, but I think the G-Men pick up a W in this game.
Indianapolis* at Baltimore → The Flying Peytons had to pull off a miracle win in Week 10. Nothing like that will be necessary here.
New Orleans* at Tampa Bay → Saints defense was a few men down against the Rams, and the game was too close for comfort. This one might be too, but Saints still win.
San Diego* at Denver → Denver won the first meeting. The Superchargers win the second.
Cincinnati* at Oakland → Cincinnati is turning into one of my favorites this year, not only for Ochocinco either. I see them stomping Oaktown 35-7 (get it?).
Arizona* at St. Louis → Rams are gradually improving, but it won't matter. Cardinals are a dominant road team.
New York Jets at New England* → The Jets stole a win the first time they met this year, but New England should seal this game up before halftime.
Philadelphia* at Chicago → I don't know why I keep picking the goddamned Eagles, except Chicago will probably turn it over >4 times.
Tennessee* at Houston → Titans are completely turned around at this point, and I think the Texans are gonna get publicly humiliated.

As it turns out, the Stanford-band play that ended Monday night's game with Browns receiver Josh Cribbs being carted off the field should have never happened.

Not just because the play shouldn't have been called, but because the Browns never should have been in position to call the play. In fact, the Browns never should have gotten the ball back at the end of the game.

The Browns never should have gotten the ball back because they took -- and were awarded -- a fourth time out during the second half.

So what was Cribbs's injury anyway? It didn't look like a particularly hard hit or anything. Did he just land strange?

Miami at Carolina – This is pretty much the same club and is kind of a throwback matchup with clubs that primarily run the ball and try to play defense (remember that)…I’m taking Miami.
Pittsburgh at Kansas City - I could see Pittsburgh maybe getting off slow and keeping KC in the game for a half, but I would be really surprised if the Steelers lost.
Washington at Dallas- Dallas is going to be gripping, but they should beat the Redskins. If the Cowboys blow this one, JR is going to lose it and start talking crazy.
Buffalo at Jacksonville- the Bills will come out firing, but Jack Del Rio seemingly has the ability to get his club out of the ditch enough to keep his job, I’ll take the Jaguars, who do seem to be a bit improved while beating up on lesser opponents.
Seattle at Minnesota- Vikings until proven wrong. Seattle’s D gave up about a half mile in offense last week to the Cards.
San Francisco at Green Bay- This will probably be a pretty decent game but I will take the Pack at home.
Cleveland at Detroit- blood in the water, the small fish get a chance to feed, winner maybe gets to keep his job. The Browns couldn’t move the ball against Ohio State at this point. Detroit doesn’t appear particularly good at anything, but they have put up some yards in a couple of games, so I will take the Lions at home.
Atlanta at New York Giants- Boy have the stock slid on these two clubs, that being said, I think the Giants still have more of a shot of pulling it together and should win this week.
Indianapolis at Baltimore- Ravens fans hate the Colts, like Colts fans hate the Pats. B-more will play up for this game and if things go right, they could be the club to knock off Indy. I’m taking Indy, but the Ravens have a shot, especially if Ed Reed returns one back for a TD.
New Orleans at Tampa Bay- Saints should win, but they seem to play to the competition a bit and keep these lower rung clubs in the game. To believe in the Saints as a Super Bowl club, I’d like to see them go out and shellac one of these clubs dropping 28 in a quarter early and then cruising.
San Diego at Denver- The NFL is a fickle bztch, one day she loves you the next you are a total loser. Denver should be used to it, they have gotten off to strong starts 2 of the last 3 years to only completely collapse into a mess. I think the glimmer of SD regaining the run game is something to note. SD is the only club that can beat the Colts and yet not win squadoush in the playoffs. There is something in that and I’m sure Pats and Steelers fans hope they are around for that one.
Cincinnati at Oakland- Bengals should handle this one, but they need to get it done without piling up any injuries.
Arizona at St. Louis- AZ seems to actually be getting it together, so I will pick them to win and watch Warner have a complete meltdown in the town where he made his name.
New York Jets at New England- I can’t see NE losing to the Jets after a week like last one.
Philadelphia at Chicago- I want to take the Bears, but they are a sucker bet at this point. Who knows on the Eagles, I thought coming into the year they could be a Super Bowl club. They have zero running game, cannot move the ball a yard to save their soul but they do have talent. Eagles should win.
Tennessee at Houston- No good reason, but I am going both birds blazing and taking the Titans in an upset.

Last week another mediocre 8-7, but I would have been better if I went with some of my hunches. Oh well that and $200 bucks will get only one of your legs broken by a guy named Vinny.

PATRIOTS OFFENSE V. COLTS DEFENSE

* In the Colts nickel package, Powers played inside with Jennings on the outside
* Patriots had success running the ball out of shotgun with Faulk against the Colts nickel package – Bracket and Sessions were the LBs in the nickel
* Moss at his best as a vertical route runner, and a bender; He’s not a lateral receiver with agility and quickness – He runs go routes, seam routes, deep over routes (the 55 yarder v. the Colts)
* Moss 55 yds was a great play: Patriots 6 OL on the field to dictate Colts base 4-3 personnel, Moss in the slot inside TE Watson, Play action with Brady under center, Moss deep over route versus “Tampa 2”, Brackett just impacted enough by play action so that Brady made the throw over the top of him
* Brady more and more comfortable in the pocket, His elite pocket movement is almost all back to where it was
* Colts a much more multiple defense this season, More pressure concepts
* Patriots an excellent job with Moss aligning him in different locations in the formation, This dictates coverages and matchups that favor the Patriots – This is how the Patriots get Moss matched on safeties
* Stanback played meaningful snaps in the Patriots 3 WR packages, He was the third WR in this game
* 6 OL was clearly a part of the Patriots offensive game plan, It dictated fronts and coverages – Moss 63 yd TD came out of 6 OL personnel plus a TE, It was 8 man protection off play action, Moss tight motion to get him matched on B Bethea
* Mathis gave RT Kaczur a lot of problems with his speed and quickness as a pass rusher, It was clearly a mismatch
* Brady great pocket movement on Edelman 9 yd TD, At his best no QB in the NFL is better than Brady at movement within the pocket while maintaining focus downfield
* What was interesting on Edelman 9 yd TD was that LB Wheeler was playing Edelman man-to-man, It was a quarters coverage concept but the slot defender has the slot receiver man-to-man on lateral routes
* Patriots utilized a lot of different double team and chip tactics to neutralize Freeney as a pass rusher against rookie LT Vollmer
* Maroney very little juice, Somewhat mechanical in his movement, Not a smooth and fluid runner, Lacks great change of direction and burst – He’s really more of a grinder with a limited skill set
* Patriots most effective runs in this game came out of the shotgun with Faulk, who’s a much quicker and more dynamic back than Maroney
* Brady threw the ball extremely well: Velocity and accuracy
* Colts defense seemed to play faster as the game progressed, They generated more pressure on Brady with their DL in the second half – Mathis and Freeney play with incredible energy and effort snap after snap
* In the second half, the Colts defense was the better unit on the field; They looked quicker and faster than the Patriots offense – They also did an excellent job mixing coverage schemes in the secondary and preventing big plays
* On the Patriots final drive, they were in the shotgun on all 4 snaps; No confidence in their running game and Maroney out of base offense with Brady under center – In that situation, Belichick told you all you need to know about Maroney

VIKINGS OFFENSE V. LIONS DEFENSE

* CB James played with a big cushion, He just gave up completions at the short to intermediate levels, He never challenged receivers (even TE Shiancoe when he was split wide)
* Favre made a couple of great throws on the move – The 43 yarder to Rice in the second quarter came off designed movement: Favre great pump fake to the flat to Harvin, CB James jumped Harvin and allowed Rice to run by him, Deep safety Simpson also reacted to Harvin – Just a classic example of undisciplined defense
* Favre is so good at manipulating and moving the defense with his head, his eyes, shoulder rolls, pump fakes – No QB is better playing games with the defense than Favre
* Rice has deceptive long speed, He eats up ground in a hurry with his stride and breaks down the cushion quickly; He tracks the ball in the air very well
* Vikings downfield passing game very much of function of Peterson and the run game; Vikings dictate fronts and coverages with personnel and formations, shifts and motions – That allows a receiver like Rice, who’s not naturally explosive, to be a significant vertical threat
* No back in the NFL forces defenses to stay disciplined on the back side more than Peterson; His vision and cutback ability are unparalleled – Also, he breaks more tackles at the line of scrimmage than any other back; A violent, relentless runner
* Favre is throwing the ball consistently better than I have seen in a number of years; Outstanding velocity, and more importantly, accuracy
* Favre clearly playing with more discipline; There’s almost a precision to his game that was never really there before, even in his MVP seasons in Green Bay – He’s playing with great pocket discipline and awareness
* Vikings incorporated more Favre designed movement off play action in this game, This really put the Lions defense in a bind – This is something I would expect to see more of as the season progresses
* Lions defense posed no challenges to the Vikings offense, either in terms of pressure or coverage – Vikings offense was able to play this game comfortably, under no duress

JAGUARS OFFENSE V. JETS DEFENSE

* Jets did not blitz much at all through the first quarter; The Jaguars discouraged the Jets from blitzing with personnel and formations: A lot of 2 TE personnel packages, Some “22” personnel (2 backs and 2 TEs) and some “21” (2 backs and 1 TE)
* In the first half Jets corners did not match up to the Jaguars WRs; Revis played LCB and Lowery played on the right side
* LB Scott at times looked tentative and hesitant in his reactions, He was catching blocks rather than delivering blows
* FB Jones an excellent lead blocker, He delivers a blow
* Garrard 11 yd TD run came against a Jets blitz, a 5 man rush with “man free” behind it; Great block by Jones-Drew on blitzing S Rhodes – Jets lost their pass rush discipline and created a big gap for Garrard
* Jets defense does not play very well when they do not blitz; They are an energy defense more than they are a system defense
* Jones-Drew an excellent blocker versus blitz: Recognition, awareness and execution – Overall, as a complete back, Jones-Drew is one of the best in the NFL
* Garrard threw the ball well, He threw with confidence – I liked the fact he made some stick throws into tight windows, The willingness to pull the trigger
* Sims-Walker 26 yd TD was a quick slant against Lowery, Lowery missed the tackle
* Jaguars did not attack Revis, They clearly stayed away from him
* Jaguars significant utilization of 6 OL, and they threw out of that personnel at times – This is clearly becoming a trend in the NFL
* In the second half Revis matched up to Sims-Walker at times, and he blanketed him
* Jets defense much more stout in the second half, especially in the third quarter
* Jets overall blitz concepts structured on the positioning of the back in the backfield, The blitz almost always will come from the side opposite the back
* Shepherd played the second half at the corner opposite Revis
* Interesting on 3rd + 9 with 3 minutes left and 1 point lead Ryan did not blitz, He rushed 3 and played “2 man” with a lurk defender in the middle (the Garrard factor as a runner?) – Garrard made an excellent throw to Thomas in the middle matched against Strickland for 15 yds
* Jets defense was not a proactive factor in this game, They were not aggressive and challenging, They were more passive with less blitz

maroney dances endlessly in the backfield is his main problem imo

he's not bad--he's probably "adequate" but imo he lacks burst and vision on handoffs--he's best with a little space (like on screends) because he has good power and pretty good top-end speed. but it takes him a while to get going which is why you can't really use him in short yardage imo.

he doesn't really have much of a burst it seems like

he will never be able to replace westbrook as a pass catcher (ray rice is the new westbrook fyi) but he can be a really good rb & more than serviceable out of the backfield. like, philly has been dominant for pretty much the whole decade, and kolb + mccoy + jackson + maclin is arguably the best young offensive nucleus in football, which is a bit weird considering that the eagles aren't & haven't been anywhere near rebuilding

they might try and grab a shifty, westbrook type in the draft or FA for obv passing downs but if they get their run/pass ratio a bit closer to 50/50 mccoy can be a big weapon

i guess falcons, giants, cowboys & maybe packers have better young offensive nucleuses in the NFC but the eagles four are super young & are playing at a pretty high level atm

like, obv you would take romo + barber + austin + williams (?) over kolb + mccoy + jackson + maclin if mcnabb & westbrook theoretically both retired after this season, but the eagles have young players in place that could be a force in two or three years and yet they are still a playoff contender basically every season. it's pretty interesting — i mean it's all about great drafting of course, if you think about perpetually rebuilding teams like bills/browns/raiders/redskins/rams/lions etc etc it's pretty impressive what the iggs have in place

maybe i'm reaching a bit, obv kolb has played only a few games (but he's increasingly looking schaub-esque) & mccoy is still a rook but, even the vikings will have a hole at QB, ravens have no good WR, the bears need a WR, ryan grant may not be all what he was cracked up to be - philly has a solid foundation, i'm very intrigued by them

by schaub-esque i'm referring to him being a potential starter languishing behind a (still) pretty good qb

kolb's kinda the wild card, he's definitely looked good in limited action but it's tough to evaluate him based on a couple of spot starts

the eagles o-line is a goddamn mess but there IS a ton of young talent w/upside there... in a year or two that could be a kickass unit, or could continue to be a goddamn mess

it's hard to make a great argument for a lot of other teams though - the cowboys have a ton of young skill position talent, but the o-line's on the old side and romo's almost 30 and has shown remarkably little improvement in his critical problem areas (sloppy footwork etc); packers have a great combo with rodgers & jennings but are really thin on the o-line and at running back; as far as long term building block guys the falcons really have ryan and roddy (and roddy white's older than you'd think) and then some somewhat unknown quantities in turner and norwood (persistent injury probs w/jerious, turner had been suckin ass for most of the season until the past few weeks and then blammo high ankle sprain - he's signed w/the team for a while but i have no idea what kind of player he's going to be for the next few years); the giants have a ballin' young receiving corps and are solid on the o-line, but the backs have been unexceptional this year and eli's another guy who's closing in on 30; the ravens are looking really good at o-line, rb and qb, but once todd heap and derrick mason crumble into dust ray rice will be their only weapon in the passing game

romo is kinda like a kurt warner type without the gameface and without red zone playoff skills.

BAGHDAD - It seems that the Brett Favre-Green Bay Packers saga is such a worldwide phenomenon that it's being used by detainees in American military camps.
According to a military official, detainees at a Wisconsin National Guard camp in Iraq are using Brett Favre as a manner of getting at the guard troops there.

"They know Favre by name," said First Lieutenant Tim Boehnen, who is from New Richmond, Wis.

"One of the big words they know now is shenanigan. They'll constantly talk about 'Favre shenanigans,' 'He's so good for the Vikings,' and 'The Packers have got to really feel bad about that one.' "

According to Boehnen, it started when troops there started decorating their camp in Packers colors.

"We try to allow our troops to have as much fun in the compound as they can while still maintaining our professional manner," explained Boehnen.

"We spend a lot of time painting and making our compound our own and representing us. Obviously, wherever Wisconsinites go, we bring the Packers with us."

Once the decoration job happened, detainees became curious.

"They obviously then started up the conversations, and started talking about Brett Favre. They soon learned about Favre going to the Vikings, and things just started going downhill from there."

Apparently, the Raiders' decision to bench JaMarcus Russell for Bruce Gradkowski did not fire up Gradkowski's fans enought to sell out the Coliseum by today's 1:15 p.m. deadline.

As such, the Raiders-Bengals game will be blacked out locally. It is the fifth straight black out this season after the Monday Night Football opener against teh Chargers sold out in time to be televised.

For those keeping count, that makes 74 blackouts in 118 home games since the Raiders returned from Los Angeles in 1995.

I would like to know:

1. how Detroit was able to have an injury timeout when they had no timeouts left
2. what caused the pass interference call. I mean obviously it was legit since not one but TWO refs threw the flag, but I still would like to know what caused it.

I thought it was that the game can't end on a defensive penalty, so they allowed a play on 0:00.

(Detroit/Cleveland game, I mean).

Washington's defense is pretty good. The problem is that they ran out of money when it came to the o-line. If they could really run the ball and they do have some decent backs, so I don't think that is the issue, it would probably make up a bit for the deficiency at QB and Campbell is maybe a slight bit better than some of the other bottom trawlers. I also think the Skins often try too much motion mumbo jumbo on their offense, which works if you have a top level QB who has been running the same gig for a while, but it won't when your QB has had his offense changed year after year and he isn't a great field genius anyway. They need to get to the KISS style of keep it simple stupid kind of offense and limit mistakes.

Mosley, all 305 pounds of him, was two feet away and closing fast when Stafford finally let the ball go toward the left corner of the end zone. Bang! Mosley drove Stafford as hard as a quarterback can be driven into the ground. The ball fluttered into the air, right into the arms of safety Brodney Pool.

"Game's over,'' Stafford said. "I was sure it was, even though I was on the ground and pretty much in a lot of pain. Then I heard there was a flag.''

Seems that Browns nickel back Hank Poteat tackled wideout Calvin Johnson in the end zone, thinking physical play was OK because Stafford had left the pocket. "No! No!'' one of the officials kept saying over and over to Poteat. "Pass interference!''

But because Stafford lay on the field and caused a stoppage in play, Detroit was charged with a timeout. It didn't have one, that was the Lions' fourth charged timeout of the half ... but because time had expired, the Lions would not be penalized five yards, not penalized by having time run off the clock. [Only on a fifth timeout of a half -- three timeouts followed by two due to injury -- does yardage actually get marked off.]

Meanwhile, Stafford was ushered to the Lions sideline, where four team medics began to examine him. In the game went backup Daunte Culpepper. Detroit would have one, last, untimed play at the one-yard-line because the game cannot end on a defensive penalty. Culpepper began to call signals.

Then Cleveland coach Eric Mangini called timeout, and proceeded to appeal to the officials about something. The non-runoff of time on the clock? The pass interference? I don't know. After the game, he said he took the timeout to see if he had the right personnel package on the field for the last play.

"I was flat on my back on the sidelines, and the doctors were trying to figure out what was wrong with my shoulder,'' said Stafford. "But I heard, 'Timeout Cleveland,' and then I knew I could come back in.''

An injured player who leaves the field has to sit for at least one play -- unless there is a charged timeout by either team. Stafford knew. And he immediately began trying to get up, but the doctors kept telling him, basically, to hold on, hoss -- he wasn't authorized to go back in. But Stafford got up and weaved his way onto the field, telling offensive coordinator Scott Linehan to call a pass play if he wanted, because he had one play left in him.

"Only one,'' Stafford said. "But I knew I had one. I had the adrenalin going.'' He jogged onto the field and Culpepper jogged back off.

Meanwhile, Schwartz hollered at his medical staff: "Is he good to go?'' And one of the doctors said no, and Schwartz asked what was wrong, and the doc said he didn't know because they hadn't had time to examine him yet.
