Round 1 kicks off on a Thursday this year (4/22) in prime time tv. Is that weird? Other years, I might think so, but this draft is going to be so talent-packed. Ndamukong Suh (DT from Nebraska) seems to be the consensus first pick as of now. Will anything change between now and then? (It always does.)

Will the Browns go for a QB? I'd put money on the Rams and Panthers going for a 1st round QB. Redskins too. So who goes where?

Taylor Mays is too low there.

i think USC's overall general performance in these last two games may have him dropping a bit

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

it's weird, i def feel like this is gonna be one of those drafts where the teams at the top are trying to flee to the bottom of the top 10. like, will the browns have the balls to make a mario williams move and pick SUH with how bad their offensive situation is? it's just a weird, weird situation without there being a seemingly cant-miss offensive prospect. will the browns reach and take locker at 1? i guess if they decide he is their guy, if they can keep it a secret, they might be able to trade down with a team that really wants suh or okung (can't imagine a safety going #1)

DE Morgan heads injury-depleted D-line group

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 | Print Entry

Posted by Todd McShay
The most impressive individual player in the country over the past three weeks has been Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan, who has seven sacks over that span and absolutely terrorized Duke's offensive line last week.

We've had Morgan in our top 15 overall since early October and in this week's updated rankings he will move ahead of fellow junior Carlos Dunlap (Florida) as the top defensive end on the Scouts Inc. board. And while there's no guarantee Morgan will skip his senior year we've been told by two people close to the situation that he's a virtual lock to enter the 2010 draft.

Morgan is no one-trick pony. He is a relentless pass-rusher but also shows great effort holding the point and in pursuit against the run, and recently he has shown the ability to play out of a two-point stance and drop into coverage on zone blitzes.

Should he elect to come out early and perform as well as we expect in pre-draft workouts it would not be a surprise to see Morgan become a top-five pick, and there is no way we see him falling out of the top half of the first round.

• Things are not looking so rosy for some of Morgan's fellow defensive linemen, including Ole Miss DE Greg Hardy, Syracuse DT Arthur Jones and Oklahoma DE Auston English.

Hardy recently underwent season-ending surgery on a lingering wrist injury, which on top of a stress fracture that hobbled him last season and required offseason surgery and a nagging ankle early this season raises durability issues in the eyes of NFL scouts.

Hardy is as physically dominant as any defensive linemen in this class when healthy and motivated, but questions about Hardy's work ethic and ability to hold up for a full NFL season are hurting his stock significantly. It won't be a shock to us if this top-10 talent falls to the bottom of the first round.

The same can be said of Jones, who is done for the season thanks to a torn meniscus but at times this season was every bit as dominant as Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy and Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh. Problem is, because of lingering injuries (including a torn pectoral that required offseason surgery) there is limited film of Jones at 100 percent as well as concern that he won't be able to stay healthy in the NFL.

Jones never really appeared to be at full strength this season but he played hard and confirmed our feelings about his overall skill set. If he checks out physically at the combine and teams are convinced none of his past injuries will be an issue moving forward Jones could still come off the board in the first round. There just are not a lot of players with his combination of size (6-foot-3, 302 pounds), strength and quickness.

Finally, English has been lost to an ankle injury for the remainder of the season. Much like Hardy and Jones this most recent injury is just another on a laundry list of ailments for English, who came into the season looking like a third-rounder at best but now will be lucky to come off the board before the fifth.

• The trials and tribulations of some of the top wide receiver prospects --- including Dez Bryant (suspension), Eric Decker (injury), Arrelious Benn (injury/team struggles) and Mike Williams (quit team) -- have been well-chronicled in this blog. Now it's time to look at some wideouts who have stepped up their games and are moving up the board.

Jordan Shipley of Texas continues to produce consistently despite opponents bracketing him, double-covering him, rolling coverages toward him and utilizing any other form of extra attention a defense can give a receiver.

Shipley does not run a lot of intermediate or vertical routes and will need to be coached up in that area and in terms of getting off the line against press coverage, but there are still a lot of reasons to like his potential to emerge as a contributor both as a slot receiver and on special teams.

Among the traits that jump out are Shipley's toughness, competitiveness, willingness to make catches in traffic over the middle and his breakaway speed after the catch and as a return man. He is a notch below the elite prospects at the position but Shipley has certainly shown enough this season to warrant mid-to-late second-round consideration.

Georgia Tech junior Demaryius Thomas is a tough evaluation because he is so raw as a route-runner. Thomas makes the vast majority of his catches in the spread triple-option scheme on vertical sideline routes and is simply not asked to do much in terms of finding voids in zone coverage or working the intermediate areas of the field. Like Shipley, he will need a good position coach to help him develop in that area.

From a pure skill standpoint, though, Thomas is a beast when the ball is in the air. He is a big (6-3, 229), physical receiver who shows good body control along the sideline and also has the unique ability to consistently find the ball over his shoulder when running full speed downfield. If he comes out this year Thomas could sneak into the bottom of the first round.

The third member of the group is Notre Dame junior Golden Tate, who is a bit smaller and not as physically blessed as Thomas but competes hard for the ball, works back to the quarterback when the play breaks down and shows strong hands in traffic. Simply put, Tate just seems to make plays when his team needs them.

His fourth-quarter touchdown on a punt return against Pittsburgh is a perfect example. Tate has not been a major contributor in that area during his career but he pulled the Fighting Irish to within a touchdown late in the game. He just comes through in big spots.

Tate is not a first-round talent from a physical standpoint but he knows how to separate from coverage and bring the ball in and is always competing. There is room for players like him in the NFL and Tate has gone from an under-the-radar mid-round prospect to an early second-rounder and perhaps even a late first-rounder.

Around the nation

• Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh (Scouts Inc.-rated No. 3) will get plenty of chances to make tackles Saturday as the Huskers take on run-oriented Kansas State.

"Suh likes hard-nosed, physical football," the Omaha World-Herald writes: "So anytime the Huskers line up opposite teams that like to run the ball, Suh has extra motivation to play well.

"This is great for me," he said. "That's my type of football, not the cutesy stuff we see in the majority (of games) in our conference."

• Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy (No. 2) may anchor one of the best Sooners defenses ever. Had it not been for injuries to QB Sam Bradford (No. 10) and TE Jermaine Gresham (No. 28), who knows how far Oklahoma could have gone this season?

"It's been a neat group, like I said. It's probably been our best as far as their wanting to practice well and to really know. They're really smart," OU coach Bob Stoops told the Tulsa World "They see where an offense is trying to create gaps and how we need to cancel them. And some guys, or some teams, they go through practice and they get it but these guys really want to get it, you know? And really pay attention and practice well. They have a really strong pride about them and performing well. They love to perform well in practice."

• Was Saturday the last time Penn State LB Navorro Bowman (No. 13) will ever play in Happy Valley? "I can always get better as a football player," Bowman told the The Progress of Clearfield (Pa.). "There are a lot of things you have to put into perspective in making a decision like this. I'm going to do that. I can get better as a football player, but you have to make the choice that's right for you. I'm just blessed to be in this position. There are going to be a lot of things that play into this (decision)."

• Tulane WR Jeremy Williams (No. 101) has been one of the bright spots in a disappointing season for the Green Wave. Williams is 8 yards shy of a 1,000-yard season and the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that RB Andre Anderson (913 rushing yards) and Williams (992 receiving yards) could become the first duo in school history to reach 1,000 yards in the same season.

"It just shows we have done some good things during the year," Anderson told the Times-Picayune. "It's one of the few goals out there that we can grab and get."

• Is Washington QB Jake Locker (No. 7) going pro? Even his coach doesn't know. The Seattle Times talked to Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian, who said Monday he doesn't know what Locker will do and that the coach will help in Locker's decision-making process once the season is over.

"We'll assess it after the year," Sarkisian said. "I think Jake is a bright young man who is patient, he's got two tremendous parents that have raised him extremely well, and we'll get all the proper information in place and he'll make a really good decision in what's best for he and his family, and not just the immediate, but for his future as well."

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 01:57 (sixteen years ago)

clausen is good but he's also playing with arguably the two best WRs in college football (and a dope tight end) - he's big tho, has a rocket of course & has a good offensive mind for a head coach - he looks pretty great to me

really what his problem is gonna be is reading defenses - right now so much of the ND offense is just throwing deep balls/fades for tate & floyd (understandably because they are so good) but he's gonna be in for a bit of a shock when he's asked to throw some 12-15 yard routes over the middle against NFL defenses

like if you look at ryan & flacco - obv the two models for young nfl qbs - those guys didn't have superior athletes with them where they could just throw balls up like clausen does (ditto for like culter), so they had to be much better 'normal' QBs if that makes sense - not having USC or texas (or notre dame)-type talent probably really helped them develop their minds & eyes

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't know all the ins and outs of how team scouts really evaluate QB prospects, but Clausen seems like a potential dud in the Brady Quinn mold to me. On the other hand, he reminds me a little bit of Eli Manning who now has a Super Bowl ring.

Berry should go ahead of Mays as a safety, but Mays should still be #2 I think.

People are sleeping a little on George Selvie too. USF is having a dreadful year and his production is down, but there were two seasons when he was the best DE in the state of Florida.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:05 (sixteen years ago)

anyway yeah notre dame's track record w/qbs post-montana is pretty terrible. the whole bledsoe or mirer debate wasn't quite manning vs leaf but the difference was almost as stark in terms of success vs failure. quinn totally looked like a future nfl star at points too but he just looks clueless out there, despite my thought that perhaps it's because of shitty coaching.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:08 (sixteen years ago)

i feel like clausen might have some of the same intangibles issues as quinn seems to have as well.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

Part of the problem is (and they'll all deny it) old people having reverence and awe for Notre Dame football. People my age (35) and younger don't, and can see right through all the hyperbole about their star players and draft prospects. tbh, I hope some team picks up Clausen in the first round and starts him right away so maybe we can put an end to it once and for all.

kinda interesting that maybe the most successful guys on that list (aside from manning and mcnabb) came from smaller schools and most of the guys from big, nationally recognized programs have flopped.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:30 (sixteen years ago)

Prognostication based on nothing:

Colt McCoy - eh.
Sam Bradford - eh.
Tim Tebow - could excel in a Vick 1.0 vein, we'll see.
Jake Locker - will do well, provided he even goes to the NFL.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

tebow will make a nice 5th round h-back

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:39 (sixteen years ago)

You're ignoring his leadership intangibles, canks.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

i think a team is gonna jump on tebow in the first three rounds, like the dolphins did with pat white - if a team that gets him is willing to be creative with him - beyond, omg it's a tebow wildcat! - i think he could be really great - the pats supposedly coveting him is awesome imo - he would be great in the redzone for them, esp if he is able to catch and shit - he's so strong & athletic - you could do tons of shit with him - i hope a team drafts him & hatches some plans beyond "we are moving you to tight end/linebacker"

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

i hope tebow has a successful career as an out of focus benchwarmer standing a few feet behind the head coach.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago)

like if the jags draft him to try and save their existence in jacksonville it's gonna be a thoroughly depressing situation - there needs to be a team that will motion him run options and stuff

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago)

it's really a shock to me that more teams aren't open to the option - it's such a stupid mental barrier in the nfl - if you have guys like white & young & tebow who ran it for their whole college careers, you can really, really throw nfl defenses off if you let them run it bcuz obv nfl defenses just don't prepare for that - off the top of my head, the dolphins broke two huge plays against the pats letting ricky & pat white run the option, including a TD - and last week the titans ran some option with vince & chris johnson and they broke two huge runs - this is what tebow should be doing imo

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:46 (sixteen years ago)

Jags want him, this much is true. He probably wants to go there, too, because I can't imagine him being happy thousands of miles away from his parents and his church. Ha!

I think he'll go to the Rams, though, if UF wins the championship game.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

the main flaw with the wildcat is that ronnie brown isn't a competent enough passer & pat white can't play the main position because he's too small to run up the middle - tebow on the other hand, could be that up the gut point person in the wildcat, but he can also throw the ball & he could run an option with the sweep guy - all types of shit - just need open minded coaches

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

(If they don't, he suits up as a Jaguar in 2010.) xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

Tebow's deceptive at UF. There's no need to run the wildcat there, as Jordan pointed out, because the UF modus operandi is what other teams turn to as a wildcat play.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:51 (sixteen years ago)

i'm serious tho - if whoever gets tebow lets him go into the gun on 3rd and 5 & under and run some zone reads - esp that play that florida runs where they have the tight end option up the middle with the rb to the outside - will have a dimension that no one in the nfl has - the guy can obv not be a pro quarterback - he hasn't taken a snap under center in his whole career (maybe once) & learning to read defenses while dropping back from under center will alone cost him like a whole year - but it would be a waste for a team to not draft him and utilize the QB aspects that he (and maybe only he) has

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

every big running qb that has come out of college - i'm thinking vince, pat white, seneca - hasn't been big enough to be used as a primary runner - tebow could take on NFL LBs and presumably stay healthy

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 02:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah well that's the thing isnt it - guys who can run like a running back (this is important, as opposed to just being a guy who's good at scrambling around - this is why vick will never be much of a weapon in the wildcat) and throw like a quarterback aren't so plentiful. the matchup problems u create for defenses by being so versatile with the same personnel also has the drawback that you're not going to be that great at all these things ure threatning to do - it used to be that players in the nfl were valued for their versatility, fullbacks with swiss army knife skillsets were the stars of the league, but that's really a style of play more suited to the college game now

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

I think Tebow is either a QB or a FB, definitely not a HB.

I think there's gonna be a run on QB's in the first and second round in this draft, and a lot of them are going to be reaches. There are a lot of teams out there that need an upgrade.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:05 (sixteen years ago)

Especially when you consider the fact that there won't really be a lot of good free agent QB options. I mean, every team that has a good QB has essentially locked them up already.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:07 (sixteen years ago)

has orton been extended? him, campbell and pennington will all be FAs

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

campbell's not as bad as people think btw

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

And I shall list them. Please correct, add or subtract if necessary:

Panthers, Redskins, Rams, Cardinals, Raiders, Browns, 49ers, Seahawks, Bills (maybe Broncos).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

If you put Jason Campbell in a situation with a good o-line and a couple of decent-to-excellent wide receivers, he could be successful. Successful is different than good.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:11 (sixteen years ago)

I doubt the Cardinals would draft a QB before giving Leinert a chance.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

I think Denver will lock Orton up for sure.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

That doesn't mean they won't draft somebody, though. Probably 4th-7th round.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:13 (sixteen years ago)

I wonder if someone trades for Rosenfels or Jackson.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

I think the Rams would be making a mistake if they drafted a QB. Bulger is nothing special but he's the least of their problems.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

Titans are a maybe, I think.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

actually, and im just thinkin out loud, i wonder if the recent, relative success of the wildcat family of offensive concepts has more to do with the rising popularity of the unbalanced line than it does w/the resurgence of the option - offensive lines are so fuckin big now, every team has packages with 6-man lines these days, and if you have a QB who can spread the field it gives you a lot of opportunities to unleash your running game on nickel defenses

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:18 (sixteen years ago)

xxp Bulger's not doing anything to help solve their problems, though.

xxxp Tavaris Jackson has fixable issues. If another team would put the time into him, he could do well.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

Can you really say that the wildcat has been successful for anyone but the Dolphins? And it works for them because they have a backup QB who can run, and a RB who can pass who is also a very good RB, and a backup RB who is superb, and a dynamite guy for reverses in Ginn. It's a very unique bunch of guys. Otherwise I think you're really just talking about running backs who are running on direct snaps, for the most part.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:25 (sixteen years ago)

Otherwise I think you're really just talking about running backs who are running on direct snaps, for the most part.

^^^ this. Half the plays every Sunday that get called a wildcat in the play-by-play booth really are no such thing.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:27 (sixteen years ago)

xxp Bulger's not doing anything to help solve their problems, though.

The question is, who helps them more? I think they should concentrate on defenders, offensive line, and playmakers. Maybe grab a project QB, or bring in someone else's backup to compete with Bulger. I don't think Sam Bradford or Locker or etc. could succeed with the talent assembled around him.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:27 (sixteen years ago)

The Rams are so effed they may as well just start with a figurehead.

The delicious irony of Sam Bradford potentially going to the REDSKINS just occurred to me.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

yeah exactly - the deluge of wildcats from other teams has taken out of focus just how good it has been for the dolphins - you need to be able to threaten up the middle & with the sweep & the phins have established that - similarly, you need to have a point man who can read what is going on and decide whether to hand the ball off to the sweep man or not or run it up the gut - this is complicated stuff that needs to be worked on - you can't just throw a dude back there and have him run into the backs of your linemen - ronnie brown just runs it so well

btw, the rams are no brainer taking a QB - even if it's not "right" for them, they need to give their fans some sort of hope - they need a stafford there - also their defense is hon okay - they have on of the best safeties in the league that no one knows about (atogwe) & they already spent a high pick on chris long - last year they took a tackle - i think this year is a no brainer year for them to be taking a QB, whether it works or not

Poor Browns. If they hadn't lost James Davis and D'qwell Jackson, it's conceivable they might have more to show for the season at this point.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

Panthers, Redskins, Rams, Cardinals, Raiders, Browns, 49ers, Seahawks, Bills (maybe Broncos).

of these teams, i think niners, hawks, panthers, bills have the best chance of getting the best QB - someone in mid round 1 or 2 that they don't reach for like maybe the browns, skins, raiders, rams will

xxxp Tavaris Jackson has fixable issues. If another team would put the time into him, he could do well.

i'm serious tho - if whoever gets tebow lets him go into the gun on 3rd and 5 & under and run some zone reads - esp that play that florida runs where they have the tight end option up the middle with the rb to the outside - will have a dimension that no one in the nfl has - the guy can obv not be a pro quarterback - he hasn't taken a snap under center in his whole career (maybe once) & learning to read defenses while dropping back from under center will alone cost him like a whole year - but it would be a waste for a team to not draft him and utilize the QB aspects that he (and maybe only he) has

the rams are actually really really horrible on defense, they have a lot of guys with good madden ratings who are actually not good players at all - i'm still a chris long believer (though i think he's probably best suited to play rush linebacker in a 34, he seems overmatched playing on the line) but they really, really need a lot of talent all over the place on that D

I took a look at the schedule, and this is a sort of rough guess of what the draft order will be.

STL
Cleveland
Tampa Bay
Detroit
Oakland
Washington
Buffalo
KC
Seattle
Carolina
Chicago
SF
Tennessee
NY Jets
Miami

NEW YORK DESERVED 9-11 (cankles), Thursday, 19 November 2009 05:00 (sixteen years ago)

Current NFL draft grades from scouts: UT, A&M, LSU, OU, OSU, TCU and UH

I will be back tomorrow with my report card for the Texans defense nine games into the 2009 season but let's take a quick look at the 2010 NFL Draft and some of the draft grades from players in this area.

Keep in mind that I am well aware that there are many more draft prospects out there than just the names I will cover here, but I'm going to keep it to this list for now and then expand it more after the college season is over.

I consulted with four different scouts and got varying opinions on players but I'll generalize the draft grades for you. Keep in mind that a draft "grade" is different than where they will stack players before the draft comes up. They can be completely different.

Oklahoma

**Updated** Jermaine Gresham, TE, OU - 1st Round

Jeremy Beal, DE, OU - 4th/5th Round

Sam Bradford, QB, OU - 1st Round (3 scouts with a 1st grade and one with a 3rd)
Scout's Take: "Everyone else may give him a 1st, but I've got a 3rd on him. I think his arm is just okay and I have a problem with how he handles pressure. If you get in his face, I suspect he would be exposed a little bit."

Gerald McCoy, DT, OU - High 1st Round

Trent Williams, OT, OU - 1st Round
Scout's Take: "Williams is a top 10 talent but he is very lazy and the film won't lie when teams really study him so he could fall to the late 1st."

DeMarco Murray, RB, OU - 4th/5th Round

Oklahoma State

**Updated** Russell Okung, LT, OSU - 1st Round

**Updated** Dez Bryant, WR, OSU - Top 10
Scout's Take: "Bryant is a better pro prospect than Crabtree in my opinion because he's faster and I think he'll get off press coverage in the pros better than Crabtree. He can run. He will run in the low 4.4s or maybe faster. Crabtree was a 4.5 guy."

Texas

Sergio Kindle, OLB/DE, UT - 1st Round
Scout's Take: "He didn't play as consistently this year as I expected, but he's got great NFL attributes and I would love for us to get our hands on him."

Colt McCoy, QB, UT - 2nd/3rd Round

Earl Thomas, FS, UT - 2nd Round
Scout's Take: "I love this Thomas kid. I know he probably won't come out, but he's got terrific range, great instincts and he's not afraid to stick his nose in there. He's a much better football player than the Mays kid at USC."

**Updated** Jordan Shipley, WR, UT - 3rd/4th
Scout's Take: "He has really helped him draft stock this year. He won't be a fit for us, but I trust him as a draft pick more than Brandon LaFell who will be drafted in the 1st round."

LSU

Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU - 1st/2nd
Scout's Take: "He is a better athlete than Dwayne Bowe or Michael Clayton were coming out but he has a ton of drops. He has very small hands and drops will be an issue."

Charles Scott, RB, LSU - 5th Round

Terrance Tolliver, WR, LSU - 3rd Round
Scout's Take: "He'll probably get drafted higher than the 3rd round, but that's my grade on him and I don't really like him too much as a draft prospect."

Houston, TCU, Texas A&M

Case Keenum, QB, UH - 2nd/3rd Round (one scout gave him a 4th round grade)
Scout's Take: "I think everyone's grade on this kid is going to be a little bit soft because I think everyone will do much more studying if he declares. If he doesn't then he'll get picked over and looked at closer by scouts next summer."

Jerry Hughes, DE, TCU - 2nd Round

Von Miller, OLB, A&M - 2nd Round
Scout's Take: "Von Miller is the 2nd best defensive player I've seen all year in the Big 12 behind Gerald McCoy. I think he can end up going in the last 1st."

j0rdan's otm w/ tebow

dude's not a sure thing on any one measure, but he is a super talented athlete who could end up doing all kinds of things. having him in your pocket for redzone situations just to fuck w/ the d = worth a 2nd round pick imo.

johnny crunch, Thursday, 19 November 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

People have been dropping Dan LeFevour's name into draft conversations since last season (first time I heard of/saw him was when they played Georgia in 2008). I've seen him play 2 or 3 times since then, including last night, and he seems really talented. Central Mich runs the spread, though, so intense retraining will be necessary.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

read this about tebow, a lot of it--not all--makes sense to me:

Tim Tebow's Scouting Report
By Matt McGuire

Strengths: Muscular build and great bulk ... Solid arm strength ... Very good accuracy on the deep ball ... Great feel for a pass rush and has a great mental clock of when to step out of the pocket ... Athletic enough; can pick up the first down with his legs ... Powerful runner ... Good character and strong work ethic.

Weaknesses: Absolutely horrendous footwork ... Plays in a run-option offense and it will take him 2-3 years to learn an NFL offense ... Horrible touch on the football, which is difficult to catch ... Nice accuracy on the deep ball, but it's very inconsistent in the intermediate routes ... Extremely long release ... Shown no improvement in his mechanics over his career ... Locks on to primary receivers all the time ... Speed at wide receiver made a lot of his throws look better than they actually were.

Summary: Tim Tebow lacks the basic precision passing qualities for what it takes to be an NFL quarterback, and as of now I'm giving him a fourth-round draft grade ... Needs to improve mechanics drastically ... Transition to being an NFL signal caller should take some time ... Needs to be more of a calm/cool/collected leader on the field rather than being so emotional ... Second halves against Michigan and LSU showed Tebow's great flaws when they neutralized the run option and forced him to be a pocket quarterback ... He could be a solid fullback in the NFL with his running style if it doesn't work out at quarterback.

Player Comparison: Byron Leftwich. Both players have a similar release and solid mobility. Leftwich could never master the necessary timing and accuracy recquired in a West Coast offense. I fear the same for Tebow.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

i could see the leftwich thing in terms of throwing, but the idea that leftwich had "solid mobility" is....what

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's weird, leftwich has been a hobbler since college.

i might have mixed feelings on tebow because of the FLA thing. FLA qbs who played in the nfl:

Kerwin Bell, Rex Grossman, Bob Hewko, Doug Johnson, Eric Kresser, Shane Matthews, Jesse Palmer, John Reaves, Kay Stephenson, Danny Wuerffel, and Steve Spurrier.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

That's a dire list, certainly.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

Kinda feel like you have to judge guys based on who coached them, not just what college they went to. Not a lot of Urban Meyer guys on that list. And none of those guys are anything like Tebow.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

i will remain surprised if tebow is anything beyond "okay" in the nfl

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

yeah tebow is a whole diff story. i wouldn't be surprised if meyer never has a successful QB in the nfl, he just doesn't teach his QBs things that happen in the nfl. and obv he shouldn't because it works for him in college. but, alex smith obv is not good evidence in his favor.

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

i never meant to suggest my FLA bias was rational, just "interesting". maybe tebow will be a star, it's possible. but i guess whenever i've seen these guys like him who are halfway here and halfway there in college, good at various things due to sheer athleticism (but maybe not particularly "sharp") and they always just seem to get lost in the nfl.

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, there are some guys who are just super athletes and it translates - randel-el, seneca has been in the league forever, even someone like antonio gates kind of counts in this realm i think. sometimes it translates. some - like nebraska qbs or oklahoma qbs - are just pure system players

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

I'll tell you one thing: I'd rather take Tim Tebow and try to build a team around him that caters to his skill rather than try to win games with some guy who doesn't have any natural ability but is comfortable in a pro offense.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

Is Chris Leak still a backup in Chicago? That's the only other UF quarterback that Meyer has coached, btw. (Granted, Alex Smith isn't a great example from the Utah days, but Meyer's really only coached two QB's at UF so far and Tebow is a whole different story.)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

As far as Alex Smith is concerned, Meyer took a relative non-prospect and turned him into a #1 overall pick in the draft. And Smith has flashed some ability with SF despite playing with a different OC every year of his pro career, and Singletary isn't asking him to do very much. I would take Smith over pretty much anyone among the unproven tier of quarterbacks, and over washed up veteran guys like Delhomme and etc.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

i'm certainly curious to see where tebow ends up and how he's used. it will take someone very creative, though. he can either be a centerpiece (in jax?) or an added weapon to a team (if he's willing to sacrifice his centerpiece position for one as a skilled role player, like reggie bush has.)

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

the reggie bush thing is a good comparison - if a team like jax or stl picks him to galvanize fans & prays that he can adjust to the nfl i do not think that it will go well at all

chillwave dudes get washed out, totally (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno about alex smith being any good, btw. he's been "okay" at times but he's not showing anything that makes him worthy of a high draft pick (at least to me.) he seems to be just a shade below "replacement level."

jØrdån (omar little), Thursday, 19 November 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

then again, drew brees didn't look very good in his first 2+ seasons either. shit changes in this game.

So will St. Louis take Suh or take a chance on a QB?

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

Clearly Detroit would take Suh at #2 if he was still there.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

rams should take suh and try and get a qb in the second round, or trade down for someone who really covets suh & take a qb later in the first + the bevy of picks in the trade

i don't think they should just take him first overall

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 4 January 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

Is there a QB in the draft worth burning the #1 overall on? They all kind of seem like guys you have to talk yourself into drafting high.

C-L, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, that's how I feel. Maybe Bradford if he has an amazing combine, but otherwise I would pass.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

if the rams dont pick suh, they should be kicked out of the league.

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

i think trading down would be INSANE - you trade down when you don't like the options available to you, not when you have the best defensive prospect of the decade sitting on your doorstep

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

it's not a good year for QBs in the first round either, so

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

fans are already being retarded about it b/c they see some gritty white qbs who talk about jesus. you are terrible at drafting so take the most obvious pick possible. if they want more picks they should trade steven jackson for them.

bnw, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

cankles, who do you think is the one qb in college right now who is the best candidate (or candidates) to perform well in the pros? I am including guys who aren't coming out this year.

I honestly have no idea. I mean, QB seems like a huge crapshoot across the board, but most of the best QBs in the league are former first rounders, so there is some sort of method to the drafting process.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, I really love Max Hall from BYU, but I don't think he projects as a first rounder.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

I think after I saw this in the wake of the Heisman voting that I became terrified Suh would end up on the Lions and murder Aaron Rodgers twice a year: http://www.sbnation.com/2009/12/11/1196690/ndamukong-suh-is-better-than-your

And it's not like teams were single-teaming him or running the ball anywhere near his direction, either.

C-L, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

So if we're assuming that Suh goes #1, who do the Lions take? I think OL or defense make the most sense. I like Eric Berry but I don't think he's the sort of building block that the Lions need.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

Bradford or Clausen

as for guys who arent coming out... uh, barkley, locker, masoli all look promising... luck, foles, the pac 10 is crawling with interesting qb prospects.... i mean when u start talking freshman and sophs ure looking at a lot of guys without polish and maturity, to the extent that its not really even fair to talk about projecting them for the pros... they have a lot of football ahead of them

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

I really don't like Clausen. It seems like he makes dumb mistakes every time I watch him play. He reminds me of Cutler or Sanchez.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Clausen has huge bust written all over him.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

i mean when u start talking freshman and sophs ure looking at a lot of guys without polish and maturity, to the extent that its not really even fair to talk about projecting them for the pros... they have a lot of football ahead of them

Right, but if you're one of the teams that desperately needs a QB, would you really sacrifice another year and hope someone good comes along in '11 instead of taking a flier on a guy like Colt McCoy who actually won a shitload of games in college, and didn't come from an exceedingly gimmicky offense?

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

i think if the rams could swing a near ricky williams/saints trade for the top pick/suh that they have to do it. that team is so insanely in shambles that they could put an actual transformer at defensive tackle and probably still win 6 games total in the next two years. to me, they seem like a team that needs quantity, not quality. their defense isn't even that bad tbh & they already picked chris long two years ago.

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

re: method to the madness, personally I really really prefer 4-year starters and tend not to trust underclassman QBs, though they work out sometimes (roethlisberger). imo you have to throw out stats most of the time and you have to look for guys who already have nfl skill sets... i dont like drafting someone with the idea that you're going to teach him to be good at things he hasn't displayed a talent for. you also need to have a very good idea about the guy's work ethic, the QB should always be the hardest working guy on the team. when you have guys like jamarcus, who was widely known to have been a guy who his coaches at LSU had to push to do just the bare minimum to get by, you know he's set to fail spectacularly.

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

Given that there is a potential for a lockout, there also seems like a possibility that a new slotting system could be put in place for the '10 draft, which hypothetically could make the #1 pick much much more attractive than normal. If you could draft Suh at #1 and sign him for a reasonable rate, you could trade that pick for a boatload of picks.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

mccoy won a shitload of games on arguably the most talented team in football... u gotta be careful when u go down that road (the 'he just wins' road), for there be leinarts down that path~

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

Jason Campbell was another guy who I thought was a puzzler when he was drafted. His collegiate offense was all about the two running backs behind him, and he was basically a game manager.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

i love suh as much as the next guy but i really advocate how the patriots are always trying to cash in high picks for more picks. of course that means you have to hit on those lower guys— not like the rams, in this hypothetical, would be getting a bunch of third and fourth round picks, though— but yeah.

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

mccoy won a shitload of games on arguably the most talented team in football... u gotta be careful when u go down that road (the 'he just wins' road), for there be leinarts down that path

Yeah, but what are McCoy's negatives? I don't recall hearing anything about his work ethic or his size or the system he plays in. I feel like people are undervaluing him because he has some bad measurables or something, like Drew Brees outta Purdue.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

you have to hit on those lower guys

Which the Rams have not been doing lately.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

the rams defense is HORRIBLE dude. it is objectively awful http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef

they have no linebackers, they have no corners, they have no defensive tackles. who do they have to build on defensively? laurinitis and long? long's been underwhelming (tho i'm still a believer) and laurinitis is an overachiever without a ton of upside. they need quantity AND quality. when you build up a roster of average-ish dudes, which is what they'd be poised to do if they gave away suh for a bunch of lesser picks, you end up with the bills... they have a bunch of guys who are pretty solid, but almost no difference-makers. plus, because of roster sizes, having all that value in ONE player is a lot better than having equal value spread across a bunch of lesser players. they have the rest of the draft to get those guys!

i did lol at the transformer line tho

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

i think the qb crop this year is really littered with potential huge busts w/ bradford, clausen, mccoy & tebow

2011 is also kinda weak, guys that potentially blossom imo would be:
christian ponder (fsu), jerrod johnson (texas a&m)

2012 will be a huge year tho, tons of great guys here (some could come out early tho, prob will):
ryan mallet (ark), blaine gabbert (mizzou), john brantley (uf), nick foles (az), pryor (ohio st), dayne crist (nd)

2013 you have potentially luck & barkley, both will be pretty huge prospects i think

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

i love suh as much as the next guy but i really advocate how the patriots are always trying to cash in high picks for more picks. of course that means you have to hit on those lower guys— not like the rams, in this hypothetical, would be getting a bunch of third and fourth round picks, though— but yeah.

― Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, January 4, 2010 3:03 PM (4 minutes ago) Bookmark

theyre usually doing that because theyre not in position to draft the kind of blue chip talent you get in the first 10-12 picks or so! the field has been whittled down for them when they get to pick, and at that point it can be smart to start moving around picks and trade down

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but what are McCoy's negatives? I don't recall hearing anything about his work ethic or his size or the system he plays in. I feel like people are undervaluing him because he has some bad measurables or something, like Drew Brees outta Purdue.

bad, tebow-esque mechanics... i think with him you're just getting a mediocre player from a winning program

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

Obviously NFL O-linemen are going to be better than college O-linemen, but Suh forced everybody to double-team him (or triple-team him), and not because he was out-sizing everybody. He's the prospect with the best chance of forcing the other team to put two guys to contain him, which means everybody else is playing 10 on 9. Granted the other 10 guys on the Rams will probably still continue to be shitty, but still.

C-L, Monday, 4 January 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean i wouldn't begrudge them for getting suh of course, but i think if a team makes them a godfather deal that they should do it.

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah wrt to colt:

he's small, doesn't have a huge arm, plays in a really good system — think about how vince young as a passer translated to the nfl & remember that he was basically an equal passer to mccoy in college. also a big knock on mccoy is that he doesn't play well AT ALL against top competition

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

its gonna be interesting to see where berry goes... i love the guy, but im not a fan of safeties in the top 10

doomed... to fart (cankles), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah sean taylor was probably the best safety prospect of the modern era and even he wasn't a huge playmaker w/ the skins. and laron landry has been... a disaster from what i can tell.

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 4 January 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Tim-Tebow-meets-his-worst-career-fears-in-Senior?urn=ncaaf,215726

when he showed up Monday for the first day of heavy scrutiny at the Senior Bowl, all the old alarm bells started ringing at maximum volume -- Tebow reportedly flubbed his first snap from center, and it only got uglier from there:

Performing drills with fellow South team quarterbacks Zac Robinson of Oklahoma State and Jarrett Brown of West Virginia, Tebow fumbled the ball at least twice while taking snaps under center.

Later in team drills, Tebow fell into his same old habits — holding onto the ball too long, locking onto receivers and throwing wobbly passes.

The scouts noticed.

"He looks like the third QB out there," one NFC South talent evaluator said.

mchsay's practice blog

South team
• Practice has wrapped on Day 2 and we have a lot to digest. Be sure to check back throughout the week for our full reports on each day's practices and for full scouting breakdowns and practice reports on six big-name players taking part in the festivities here in Mobile.

• South Carolina OLB Eric Norwood showed in college that he can block punts and he just got another one here during the special teams period.

• Georgia DT Geno Atkins is showing good quickness today and looks like a solid fit as a 3-technique in the NFL. At one point Atkins abused Alabama G Mike Johnson with a quick first step and good hand use.

• Florida WR Riley Cooper is having a solid day, making a spectacular one-handed catch over South Florida's Jerome Murphy.

• West Virginia's Selvish Capers has been the best offensive lineman on the South team during Day 2. He is showing good mobility, getting to the second level well and would be a good fit for a zone blocking team. Capers stopped Georgia DL Jeff Owens cold twice during drills.

• LSU RB Charles Scott has been relentless as a blocker during 9-on-7 drills. Scott also showed great focus during 7-on-7s by catching a pass that bounced off the hands of South Carolina OLB Eric Norwood.

• Alabama RB Roy Upchurch made a nice catch on a wheel route and ran with good balance during 9-on-7 drills.

• Drills have not been kind to USC S Taylor Mays, who needs to show he can hold up in coverage this week. He looks stiff and is having trouble opening his hips out of his backpedal during 1-on-1s.

• Ole Miss RB/WR Dexter McCluster has been quick in his routes during 1-on-1 drills, catching the ball well and making a nice diving grab on a deep ball from Tim Tebow.

• South Carolina OLB Eric Norwood tried to jam Auburn RB Ben Tate early in his route but whiffed and could not recover. Tate tracked the ball well despite looking back into the sun and made the catch down the seam.

•Texas MLB Rod Muckelroy moved well laterally and exploded up into the hole during bag work early but looked stiff during one-on-one coverage drills.

• A pair of defensive backs are looking good early. Both Oklahoma State CB Perrish Cox and South Florida S Nate Allen have been very fluid changing directions so far in drills.

• Depth in his drops and inconsistent accuracy are still a problem for Tim Tebow as today's practice gets underway. He also appears to be pushing the ball rather than snapping it out of his hand.

• As the South team gets loose for practice we're wondering how Florida State S Myron Rolle will respond after his body lagged behind his mind on Day 1. The rust showed after Rolle spent the last year studying at Oxford. And the big buzz here in Mobile is that Tim Tebow has come down with strep throat, though he has said he will continue practicing.

West Virginia QB Jarrett Brown will also be under the microscope after struggling with his drops and footwork on Day 1, and we'll be watching where Ole Miss WR/RB Dexter McCluster lines up as he tried to find a role in the NFL.

Finally, Alabama NT Terrence Cody has to show the endurance to be effective for the entire practice. He looked pretty bad while weighing in at 370 pounds and there are enough concerns about his weight and discipline that is stock could start taking a big hit.

waka shame (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

While he played on worse teams, I think Claussen is way more polished looking than Quinn coming out of ND. Claussen is pretty good at throwing short passes and screens. ND's offense wasn't the reason they sucked.

earlnash, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

Matt Ryan - haven't seen him play much, but the guy had a bit of a sophomore slump - we will see.
Joe Flacco - he looks OK to me, but the guy has had some odd games in the playoffs, that being said there is not that many QBs who have 3 playoff wins in their first 2 seasons.
JaMarcus Russell - this dude is a joke
Brady Quinn - He looks really blocky and awkward to me.
Vince Young - crazy career arc already started the guy has gone from phenom to bust and back. I'm really interested to see what he will do next year.
Matt Leinart - Who knows, he could have been the guy in Arizona and played his way out of a job to Warner. It will be interesting to see if he can make it work after Warner walks away.
Jay Cutler - seemingly mistake prone, but guy has a huge arm on the deep ball. Hopefully the Bears can find someone to develop him out, as they seemingly have some decent skills guys, but need that running game improved.
Alex Smith - haven't seen him play much, but I think the 49ers changing coaches like sox hasn't helped him
Aaron Rodgers - I like that he is really cool under pressure. Kind of holds on the ball too long, but he isn't very mistake prone. Better than I thought he might be.
Jason Campbell - I don't think the guy has what it takes, it just doesn't fit. Probably will hang around the NFL for quite a while as a backup though.
Eli Manning - Manning is a lucky bastard winning that Superbowl, it pretty much has taken away a bunch of the expectations. He played pretty good this year while the Giants defense fell apart.
Philip Rivers - he's got big skills but like McNabb the knock is always going to be winning the big one, which I just don't know if his club has it together enough to make it happen no matter how well he plays.
Ben Roethlisberger - perfect fit for his club, not sure he would be a star on a bunch of clubs.
J.P. Losman - The problem with the Bills is that they always seem to like the guy who is not playing and this is going back since Kelly retired. Looked like he might be Ok for a couple of weeks.
Carson Palmer - dude is like Kenny Anderson mach II - sad to think, but he is probably doomed to a be a pretty good QB on a long suffering team. He looked out of sorts at times, but the offense the Bengals ran this year was about as vanilla as you could get.
Byron Leftwich - I thought this dude was going to be something, but I guess that long release kind of doomed him. He's had some games, but never really could put it all together.
Kyle Boller - This guy got more shots to get it right than anyone really deserves. I don't like the Ravens so I'm glad they never really figured out the QB when that defense was in its real prime.
Rex Grossman - big arm but he was from Florida being drafted by the Bears, the dude was screwed at the gate.
David Carr - the sack machine, some of it definitely was Carr but the dude ate it like 100 times his first couple of seasons, so it might be brain damage.
Joey Harrington - Those recent QBs from Oregon haven't done much, have they?
Patrick Ramsey - He was drafted in the 1st round? Man the Redskins are about as bad as the Bengals in drafting QBs in the 1st round.
Michael Vick - I freaking hated the way that Vick would run with palming the ball like a can of soda and would cringe/laugh every time someone would slap it out of his hand. Hell of a talent but the dude definitely was missing some serious common sense.
Chad Pennington - good QB mind, no big arm. Won some games, missed a bunch with injury.
Tim Couch - He looked good at points and I have to wonder if he ended up someplace put that black hole of the time in Cleveland if his story isn't different. The guy got totally POUNDED for a few years with little protection, no skills talent or running game. Couch definitely did not deserve those cheers for being knocked out cold at home. That kind of shit makes me think the Brown's fans earned their current situation. I suppose they have paid penance by now.
Donovan McNabb -
Akili Smith - Who knows, the guy got hurt signing his contract. The Bengals had that crap happen a couple of times with Penn State guys.
Daunte Culpepper - The guy could throw a hell of a deep pass and it was somethign with Carter and Moss for a year or so. He pretty much lost it in a couple of injuries.
Cade McNown - The Bears can't pick a QB for bupkus.
Peyton Manning - Manning doesn't end up in Indy, the Colts are playing in Los Angeles today. I've been people call Lucas Oil Stadium the House that Peyton built and in this case I think it is very true.
Ryan Leaf - All I can say is that every time Leaf comes up I remind people that Jim Rome and Mel Kiper both had this piece of crap rated ahead of Peyton Manning.
Jim Druckenmiller - I remember the name, but I don't remember this dude.
Steve McNair - dude was a MAN in the pocket, hardest dude to sack and his body paid that bill. I'd like to see what he would have done if he say would have gotten on a pass happy offensive coordinator/team. In that he didn't probably get to do all he could do as the Oilers/Titans pretty much ran the most old school run first offense.
Kerry Collins - a very weird start and stop career an even more eccentric arc than Vinnie T., but Collins was very good at times.
Heath Shuler - Dude definitely wasn't Peyton Manning coming out of Tennesseee.
Trent Dilfer - good backup QB, what the hey he always has a superbowl win.
Drew Bledsoe - good QB kind of a what if now with how all that went down with Brady. It probably cost him a shot at the hall of fame. Bledsoe was definitely good enough to win a title with those Pats clubs and he did win that one playoff game against the Steelers off the bench.
Rick Mirer - ND QB's lead to clubs getting rooked but the dude kind of looked like Montana. Of course the Bears had to give him a shot, as the Bears will give any dope from ND a shot if available.
David Klingler - same as Ware, that dude who was coaching U of Houston was a nutcase anyway.
Tommy Maddox - Total bust with the Broncos, but it was kind of cool that he gave it another shot and had a nice season with the Steelers.
Dan McGwire - I have no idea what the Seahawks were thinking, never saw him play in college, but I know he was a total giant of a QB for the early 90s where you got guys like Manning & Big Ben with that build now.
Todd Marinovich - I think this dude was built by his dad from a young age and with his talent got everything handed to him. In a way his bust in the NFL is kind of similar to Russell's now, even though they are very different players style wise.
Jeff George - HOF talent, bush league headcase, kind of got fxxked out the door on that dumb trade where the Colts dealt a probowl LT Chris Hinton & a budding later probowler WR Andre Rison for him. That kind of thinking would get you shot today, sending your LT and best Wideout for a QB. I just don't think teams would do that kind of deal now.
Andre Ware - 90s run & shoot QB= spread QB of today

I remember I was watching the Rose Bowl, and I told my friend, "I guarantee you Brian Griese will be a better pro QB than Ryan Leaf." Then my team signed Leaf. :(

Tebow participated in only 23 plays Saturday, completing just 8 of 12 passes for 50 yards.

He had several impressive throws, including two passes into tight coverage to convert third downs.

Tebow's throwing motion was scrutinized all week, but he was accurate and efficient Saturday.

Receivers dropped three of his incompletions, and Tebow only threw one poor pass.

``It was a week I felt I got a lot better and worked on things,'' Tebow said. ``The stuff people know I can do I didn't have to come out here and do that or do it in the game.''

Most of those guys were drafted much lower than Tebow will be drafted even if he falls. No one thought Gino Torreta was a pro quarterback. No one talked about his intangibles, whereas there are definitely some things that Tebow does well.

I have to admit that I covet Toby Gerhardt on my team even though my heart tells me that he (1) probably won't be any good, and (2) we already have Jacob Hester and Eric Weddle to fill the somewhat-fast-white-guy role.

it's interesting to see who was able to add muscle in college but keep/improve their 40 time -- taylor mays put on 12 pounds and improved his 40 time from a 4.59 to a 4.43 & patrick robinson, a cb from fsu, put on 21 pounds and improved his 40 time by .03 seconds -- meanwhile joe haden put on 15 pounds & his 40 time went from a 4.46 to a 4.57 -- didn't really seem to affect the LBs tho who all put on like 30 pounds but stayed the same speed

For better or worse, the first years of the Pete Carroll era in Seattle will be defined by Charlie Whitehurst.

ESPN's Mike Sando reports that the Seahawks will move down 20 picks in the second round of this draft and give a third-round pick in 2011 to get Whitehurst.

But that's not the costly part.

The Seahawks have agreed to terms on a two-year deal with Whitehurst that is expected to pay him $5 million-per-year. Wow.

Whitehurst has not attempted a regular season pass as a pro, but he should fairly soon with that contract.

http://www.mensjournal.com/the-nfl-draft-decoded

Matt Taibi on quarterbacks...

RULE 6: TAKE A FLYER ON A LATE-ROUND QB EVERY YEAR

Here’s the thing about quarterbacks: You just don’t know. Any coach who tries to tell you that he knew this or that late-round college quarterback was going to be an NFL star is a fucking liar. If you saw Tom Brady at the 2000 combine workout, you’d have thought he was auditioning for a role in a musical about gay milkmen. Same with Delaware Blue Hen Rich Gannon (who looked so unpromising as a QB, his first team wanted to try him at safety); prematurely balding BC Eagle Matt Hasselbeck; way-too-Christian Northern Iowa grocery bagger Kurt Warner; the seriously-resembling-a-dentist Indianan Trent Green; anonymous USC benchwarmer Matt Cassel; and so on.

The least efficient way to acquire a Super Bowl quarterback is to draft a grinning, square-jawed, neck-deep-in-pussy first-round bonus baby, give him $50 million, and stake your franchise on him. That strategy sometimes works (see Manning, Peyton) but can also cripple a team for years (see Russell, JaMarcus). Instead, the surest way to get a quarterback is by accident. First you draft a bunch of late-round unknown geeks like Brady and Hasselbeck, then bring in a low-cost free-agent placeholder like a Trent Dilfer or Chad Pennington to actually run your team. Then you wait for your aging veteran to rupture his Achilles, as he inevitably will, and while he’s on the IR, you see if any of your late-round flyers can actually play. Quarterbacks are like cats or teenage girls: It’s impossible to tell what the hell is going on in their flighty heads or know how they’re going to act even five minutes from now. Do like Bill Parcells does and use your high-round picks for real men: left tackles and pass rushers.

I'll be interested to see how much both the NFL and ESPN change their presentation of it now that it's at night. I mean, the whole reason they're moving it is to attract a larger audience, so something is going to different.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 April 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

I hope Mel Kiper is still there yelling at everyone the whole time.

mayor jingleberries, Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

I love it. Every year, Mel Kiper is really high on some player at the expense of common sense (this year, his victim is Clausen). He's wrong as often as he's right.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

Clausen's stats were pretty good -- not as good as Bradford's in 2008, but comparable:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/collegeQuarterbackRating/year/2009/group/80

I don't like Clausen as a person for some reason, but I don't see why he can't be highly successful.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

he'll be good -- he reminds me of like... matt ryan or something (altho way more douchey) -- the prob he's gonna have is that at notre dame 30% of his throws involved him heaving the ball up to golden tate -- but he has all the physicals & seems like a relatively smart dude (but then again maybe he'll be david carr)

johnny crunch, Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

I think the big bust will be Bradford, simply because that team is atrocious and he won't have a chance to do anything in the first years, with no good veteran QB to learn from, with no QB coach of any great pedigree.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah idk it's possible -- mccoy was in a great system tho, just tons of really short passes, quick, easy reads and the like, but he played pretty poorly against good teams last year and just in general doesn't strike me as someone who could physically make it in a pro style offense

artie flange (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

i think bradford has a chance to be great -- they got their franchise LT last year and still have one of the 5 best RBs in the league back there -- first year might be a total disaster, but if this front office doesn't fuck up the next two drafts then i think he could be pretty special (especially in that wack ass division)

artie flange (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

if this draft is really as deep as everyone is saying, then their #33 pick this year is prob worth what a pick in the 20s would be in a normal draft

artie flange (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

important info:

Charles Coplin, the NFL programming vice president overseeing the show at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall, Tuesday said Whoopie Goldberg and actors Alyssa Milano, Josh Charles and Dan Lauria as well as weight loss guru Jillian Michaels will be working the draft's first-ever red carpet for entrances shown live Thursday on ESPN and NFL Network (6 p.m. ET).

Holmgren told ESPN's Michael Smith that he would be willing to trade most of the Browns' 10 picks and maybe some 2011 picks for Bradford. But Holmgren thinks the Rams will turn him down.

"They shouldn't do it," Holmgren said. "They need a quarterback more than anyone in the world."

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 April 2010 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

I don't like Jahvid Best much for the pros. I don't think he's tough enough for the pros.

I can never shake the image of him getting hit hard at Maryland and barfing on the field. He's like a slightly slower Reggie Bush with less of a tendency to juke.

It's Jason Sehorn, Randy Cross, and two guys I don't recognize. They are in a closet somewhere.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 24 April 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

i'm liking the Leos draft

in the last three drafts, they've now had FIVE FIRST ROUND PICKS

Calvin Johnson, Stafford, Pettigrew, Suh, and Best (who some think is the next Chris Johnson if the ridiculous injuries will finally abate...)

Off-Season, pick-ups of Kyle Vandenbosch (from Tenn who already played for coach Jim Schwartz and loves him) and Rob Sims (already moves into a starting OG role) from the Seabags for a song (guess there was some kind of beef between Sims and Carroll??? I dunno, but the kid is an immediate starter..)

6 wins for the Leos this season!! that is the goal -- 6 wins!!

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 24 April 2010 08:11 (fifteen years ago)

and of course on defense, they got this kid Delmas from Western inna late round who is a total beast and is now their starter, so that SS position is set. Yes, I am a Lions slappy, please feed me the next round of cornbread .... we have Minny's 4th round pick!

Pretty awesome Browns draft imo. Snrub is on drugs or something, which is out of character for such an astute member of the Orange and Brown family. A need was addressed in the secondary where we had no tacklers or even cover people. McCoy is a gamble but not in the 3rd round where the dice can be rolled.

ok (::reads the rest of thread::), I don't know if Snrub is being sarcstic or not about McCoy but he's worth a 3rd round pick.
