it's funny, cuz i was just thinking a day or two ago that it would own if they had roethlisberger guest star as a football player whose brain has been turned into mush (no acting required lol), cuz then they could have him mistake omar epps for coach tomlin

Carolina at NY Jets
Chicago at Minnesota

this week in quotes

"Scared. Yeah. I know he was. Y'all can quote it, too. Y'all can tell him right now, tell him I'm sayin' it. I can say it right now: Yeah, he was scared, I think. I told him he was scared."

-- Redskins safety LaRon Landry

"We were smiling and having fun out there. We're outlaws for life. It's the Williams-Allen Gang with the Outlaws! It's the Williams-Allen Gang. Everyone else is the Outlaws. Look at Billy the Kid. Do they name every member in Billy the Kid's gang? No, it's Billy the Kid. The rest are the gang."

-- Vikings defense tackle Pat Williams

"I saw Brett after the game and said, 'Would you retire, please?'"

-- Jim L. Mora

"I have mixed emotions about that. A great athlete? Yes. A football player? No. Yeah LeBron, I said it. It's a punishing game. I just don't think you can step off the basketball court after not going through this year in and year out and just play football. From that standpoint, I just don't think it's possible. You have to weather and condition your body to take this punishment."

-- Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers on LeBron James not being able to play in the NFL

"Everyone trust me Lebron James could not play in the NFL! ESPN is crazy to even think he could even make a practice squad. He's a 4.9 40 time"

-- Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey(Twitter)

"It's like watching Steve Urkel give Chuck Liddell a wedgie when he's not looking. It's chicken."

-- FOX analyst Michael Strahan on the disturbing trend of quarterbacks hitting defenders with dirty hits

But Dilfer said that any quarterback playing in Denver last year, behind the game’s best offensive line, with Brandon Stokley and Eddie Royal to catch the ball

i think you might be forgetting someone...

Also:

Gradkowski’s two touchdown passes in the game equaled Russell’s season total.

will.i.ban (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

dennis dixon is awesome, will probably suck in the nfl cuz they'll make him into a drop back passer - they should let him and mendenhall play off each other - mendenhall played with a mobile qb in college - steelers could be good if dixon ran around a bit - hines out there throwing blocks

will.i.ban (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

Dennis Dixon is one of the players that I really hoped the Chargers would draft even though I knew that they had no room for him or need for him. Pat White was another one of those guys.

12-4 last week, 109-51 on the year

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

I’m going on the limb this week on some stuff, so I am either going to clean it up or get romped.

Green Bay at Detroit- The Pack lost two defensive starters in their win last week. I’d like to take a stretch and give the Lions an upset, which could happen, but Stafford is coming off injury on a short week. I’m taking the Packers banged up and all while hoping for a decent game.
Oakland at Dallas- I’ve got to think that the Cowboys will kind of figure it out and that the Raiders won’t. I’ll take Dallas, but the Raiders are measurably better by just having someone other than Russell playing QB. If it is low scoring, Dallas could get knocked off. I don’t think it will happen that way, Cowboys it is.
NY Giants at Denver- I’m not sold to high on either of these clubs right now. I’m taking the Giants, as they actually seem to play a bit better on the road and the Broncos defense was patched up by a bunch of dudes in their 30s and I think they are starting to wear down.
Indianapolis at Houston- I’m going to probably be wrong, but I am going to take Houston in a big upset. Odds say that the Colts should walk away on this one, but they have been walking the line on losing a game for a month and Houston keeps barely losing. Texans need to not have the game come down to someone named Chris/Kris Brown in a key point.
Washington at Philadelphia- Washington’s defense is playoff caliber, but they are pretty decimated now at running back. The Eagles maybe have figured a way to get around some of their short yardage problems by going with Vick in a spread. Eagles it is.
Carolina at NY Jets- The Panthers have been a bit improved over the past month and the Jets are kind of a mess. I have no idea who to take in this game really, so I am going with the Panthers in a road upset.
Chicago at Minnesota- The Bears didn’t really change the offense even though they have a different QB, it looks to be the same screen left/screen right and try a bomb deal. Considering their run game has been a bit lame, I’d be trying some different stuff, but then again this isn’t really the Bears deal. It would take the Vikings playing really fugly to lose this one and I just don’t see it happening.
Seattle at St. Louis- Boy these two clubs suck now…I guess Seahawks by not much. Rams could win but they have to prove it to me.
Arizona at Tennessee- Tough game to pick. I’m riding the Titans, as the Cardinals are due for a road duffer.
Cleveland at Cincinnati- These games are usually closer than you would figure and have busted out of nowhere into some high scoring affairs. The Bengals ran a completely hilarious conservative offense last week, they didn’t take a shot all day against the Raiders who didn’t really put up a huge pass rush. They flubbed around, had a couple of fumbles and missed a field goal and just never put them away. I don’t get it, you got Carson Palmer and some good receivers, watch some Colts or Pats film and pickup a few tricks on how to put teams down for the count. The Raiders are not coming back from a couple of TDs down, you leave them within a score you open yourself up for the stupid junk that happened. Don’t be a Schottenheimer who would do the same damn thing even though he had Joe freaking Montana at one point. I’ll take the Bengals but hopefully they learned something last week.
Miami at Buffalo- Dolphins are decent and should pick up another win. It sux that Ronnie Brown went down.
Tampa Bay at Atlanta- If the Falcones were playing someone else, they would probably lose. I’ll take the ATL to hold up against the Bucs which are terrible and starting to flame out even worse.
Kansas City at San Diego- Is KC improving? I haven’t seen them play to be able to say. SD seems to have it working, so they should win this one.
Jacksonville at San Francisco- SF is hard to figure, decent pieces but it isn’t all there yet. J-ville has quietly done the job against lesser opponents and wormed their way into the playoff hunt. I’ll take the Jaguars but this will be low and tight scoring enough I could see the Niners hanging around or winning.
Pittsburgh at Baltimore- The Ravens just couldn’t quite put it together last week. Everyone is down on the Colts, but their defense does seem to make the play when needed. Steelers are not quite right. I’m taking Baltimore in a slight stretch.
New England at New Orleans- I want to take the Saints, but I will have to see them win before I pick them in a game like this one. NE it is.

Last week 14-2 (Steelers and Bengals flopping cost me), 110-50 for the season.

WAY too many coin flips this week.

GB > DET
DAL > OAK
NYG > DEN
ATL > TUBERCULOSIS
MIA > BUF
CIN > CLE
STL > SEA
JETS > CAR (suck vs. suck, might as well pick the home team. I watched a little of the Carolina game last week and Del Homey and the whole CAR offense looked SO BAD. Receivers shambling through routes, Del Homey trying to break his receivers ankles with the football.)
PHI > WAS
IND > HOU
SD > KC
SF > JAX
TN > AZ
MINN > CHI
PITT > BAL
NO > NE (NE is 1-3 on the road, y'all)

12-4 last week, 112-48 season.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Friday, 27 November 2009 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

i think as long as you don't have to look at collinsworth's face the smugness is tolerable. he says some good things! also sometimes he complains that no one ever praises tom brady for his arm strength, which is retarded but

horseshoe, Friday, 27 November 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

Being as someone who followed the Bengals when Chris Collinsworth started as a player and then when he started doing radio at WLW, it's weird that he got as popular as he did on TV and has kept up the gig. Collinsworth kind of followed the same career path as Bob Trumpy, but has had a lot longer time being a main football TV analyst. I honestly like Collinsworth a lot more on games than working on the preview shows, I think he does make some decent analysis of the actual game without getting into histrionics about player personalities.

Collinsworth also didn't go and screw up a club for nearly 10 years as a GM, so he has that going on over Millen.

earlnash, Friday, 27 November 2009 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

What other color guy ever worked as a GM at all? He wasn't qualified for that job when he got it in the first place.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Friday, 27 November 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

Its happened in other sports, but I don't know of any success stories. I know Steve Kerr went from the TV booth to being a GM.

haha i should've added a caveat about how millen being among the best i've heard this year really says more about the competition than anything. but i'd take him in a heartbeat over any of these guys - dierdorf, simms, moose, collinsworth, probably fouts, probably not aikman (who is good but who i end up avoiding a lot because of buck), i cant think of anyone else off the top of my head

i used to think collinsworth was alright but he's really been excrement these past two years. he's HORRIBLE at analyzing line play, and he's too hung up on storylines - he's one of those guys where you can tell he's just too in love with his pregame notes and not interested enough in breaking down the action as it's happening. millen was identifying coverages, fronts and tendencies all night.

that said i think we can all agree that former coaches are the only guys who should be allowed to do color for football games

farting irl (cankles), Saturday, 28 November 2009 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

jon gruden should do every game

johnny crunch, Saturday, 28 November 2009 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not really willing to hold the GM thing against him either, the ford family deserves more of the blame than him imo - they were the ones who were stupid enough to hire him in the first place, and were also the ones too dumb/lazy/indifferent to fire him after his repeated failures. his only crime was being given an opportunity to do a job he was wildly, blatantly unqualified for - that's a different skillset from being a broadcaster though, and if you gave any number of guys (including gruden, who would be a horrible GM for any team) that opportunity you'd get the same results.

I am not sure whether to post this here or in one of the "Conservatives be Craaaazzzzaaaaay" threads, but, uh: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2009/11/27/president-obama-joins-nfl-players-thanksgiving-tv-ad

Apparently Obama is trying to extend his socialist tentacles into America's two greatest natural resources: football and obesity.

Also wow Rush Limbaugh has thought about the conspiracy to keep him out of NFL ownership a LOT.

C-L, Saturday, 28 November 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

wow, some of the comments on that are a treat

Can't wait to See "Christmas in Jakarta with Double O" ...a Harpo production. With special guests Rev Wright & Billy Ayers. Join us as Oprah channels her inner Riefenstahl and presents Obama as bigger than Jesus Christ. You'll hear compelling stories about Obama's upbringing like how his mother thought religion was for weak minded yokels and that the Bible was only good as a historical document.

Obama will even recite the Muslim call to prayer in perfect Arabic accent to reenact his daily childhood ritual. Rev Wright will damn America and the blue eyed devils who've made the world a worse place for everyone who isn't white. While Billy Ayers will talk about why he gave up trying to terrorize America with terroristic bomb attacks and instead decided that indoctinating America's youth was a better way to destroy America from the inside.

I've also heard Soros' name mentioned in all of this BS behind the scenes...Rush mentioned his name as well once when discussing all of this. Soros always stays behind the scenes...nobody makes what they should regarding this evil man and all his spider web connections he has everywhere!

some people. what can you do?

yeah, whatever (daria-g), Saturday, 28 November 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

I never get a good read on how much of that is just really bitter sarcasm (like, the Christmas special obviously seems super over-the-top) and how much of that is some random person on the internet legitimately believing that Obama secretly speaks perfect Arabic and that George Soros is spending billions of dollars to destroy America, for Satan. Because like why? That's SO MUCH effort! The Obama-Oprah Christmas special wouldn't even get very good ratings, if they were just going to talk about Islam!

Although I guess if one were to gather things I have said here and elsewhere about Brett Favre, Minnesota Viking quarterback who no longer throws interceptions, I would probably sound like a Freeper in terms of vitriolic hyperbole. Glass houses, stones, etc. Still, Brett Favre ppl are the most disgusting savages in the world imo.

farting irl (cankles), Saturday, 28 November 2009 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

mike tanier on fire today:

San Diego’s victory over Kansas City will be celebrated by a ticker-tape parade, followed by a lengthy, sordid investigation.

The radio station in Jim Zorn’s headset switched to all Christmas carols three weeks ago, but the other National Football Conference East teams can’t afford to go into a yuletide trance. Donovan McNabb will break Ron Jaworski’s record for games played at quarterback for the Eagles on Sunday. Thanks to a combined 283 weeks in purgatory, they each get to go through the express lane at the pearly gates.

Jay Cutler’s passes sail high over all our heads, like weather balloons, differential calculus or “Remembrance of Things Past.” It takes amazing arm strength and a shocking lack of impulse control to overthrow Devin Hester, but Cutler finds a way.

If Brady Quinn starts sparkling on the Ohio sun, it will confirm suspicions that he is one of those “New Moon” vampires: young, handsome, the object of many people’s obsessions, and largely ineffectual.

"U guyze Eggerin James is 10th all time in rushing??"

Edge led the NFL twice in rushing and went over 1500 four times. He was pretty good in his prime. James also missed at least a season worth of games while in Indy. I think him getting hurt caused the Colts to spiral in Jim Mora's last year. After James got hurt, Manning turned into an interception factory trying to throw them to victory and they hit the dirt. James doesn't get hurt that year, the whole story of the Colts might have turned out very different and there might not have been that classic Mora "Playoffs? Playoffs? I just want to win another game." quote might never have happened.

Marvin Lewis has put the shackles on to the Bengals offense. While the Bengals are having success running the ball, if their offense is now so conservative it is making the old Ravens look like a run and shoot club.

Houston is just not ready to win. I don't get it, as they got the tools, but those fools just give away games all the time. This wasn't quite as bad as Roselfels completely giving a win to Indy last year, but it is pretty lame.

we be emi robin' (k3vin k.), Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

McNabb is definitely a Hall of Famer

Mordy, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Sportswriters need something to talk about, but to put the whole debacle at Jay Cutler's feet is disingenuous. If Charlie Weis is available, I'd really like to see what he could do with Cutler and the tools the Bears offense would have. Pretty much every overrated ND guy ends up with the Bears at some point would be a bonus. Mike Martz has also said he would be interested in working with Cutler and the Bears. Martz is totally nuts, but I'd let him be the offensive coordinator provided Lovie would be allowed to run the ball when it is time to eat clock.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry Joe Buck, I think the Bears need to beef up their O-Line much more than the skills positions. Bennett, Hester, Knox and Olsen is not a bad receiving corps. Chicago needs to be able to run the ball and keep Cutler from getting clocked. If they could find a vet with really good hands, that would be OK, but I think the biggest problem is their leaky aging line and the penalties they generate.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

i dont really think of edge as a future hofer, but he's probably a borderline case. i think the gap between hof-quality backs and hof quality receivers in this decade is pretty interesting - ldt and marshall faulk are the only surefire backs imo, but with receivers you have guys like moss, t.o., bruce, harrison who all probably deserve to get in, not to mention borderline guys like jimmy smith, reggie wayne, hines ward, torry holt etc

farting irl (cankles), Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

Weirdly, while this whole discussion was coming out of Edge becoming the 10th leading rusher of all time, Torry Holt just became the 10th leading receiver of all time.

C-L, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

i used to think of holt as a lock, but he isn't aging as gracefully as isaac bruce did and the insane receiving numbers of the past 15 years mean that either a shitload of receivers are getting in (and frankly i'd be fine with not admitting any skill position guys for a few years), or that the standards for a hof receiver in this era are going to be insanely high

horseshoe, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think Holt, Smith, or Wayne are hall of famers. Very good players, of course.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

I think Edge and LT will get into the Hall, but eventually I think the demarcation line is going to be getting past Jim Brown in the all time rushing stats.

McNabb has won a heck of a lot more games than Pennington, including a couple of times pulling off some crazy stuff in the playoffs (like that big upset over the Packers including that insane 4th & 26 play). I think McNabb's Hall status is tied to how the Eagles play out over the rest of his career. People are going to talk about coming up sick in the superbowl, but McNabb WAS the offense for a good long time for the Eagles.

Reggie Wayne has a wacky stat of being the only receiver to have his receptions improve his first 7 years in the NFL. Being a bigger guy and less injury prone (knock wood), I could see him playing for another four or five years. I think the biggest thing that would cement a bid to the Hall for this guy is the Colts winning another Superbowl.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

OK the only way I could grow to like Jared Allen is if in the middle of mall jewelry commercials he showed up and started yelling insane shit about being a primal warrior.

C-L, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

Joey Galloway has the 22nd-most touchdown receptions in NFL history, tied with Hines Ward.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

do you guys think the vikings are going to the super bowl? ;_;

horseshoe, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

Joey Galloway is an underrated and good receiver who is still playing at age 38, but Hines Ward is a Steeler with two Superbowl rings, a Superbowl MVP and is pretty much known as the nastiest blocking wide out of his time. I think with Ward, hall voters are going to take in the kind of offense he played upon and they love the fact that the dude has pancaked a hundred guys or so in the run game as a blocker.

earlnash, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

Does the NFL HOF Committee have the same tendency towards giving extra points to media-friendly guys (and negative points to surly dicks) that the MLB HOF does? Cause I could kind of see Hines Ward getting in just on being very good AND on consistently leading the league in smiles, whereas Marvin Harrison might have to overcome the barrier of being silent and creepy.

C-L, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

I think with Ward, hall voters are going to take in the kind of offense he played upon and they love the fact that the dude has pancaked a hundred guys or so in the run game as a blocker.

Yeah, I think Ward's reputation as a blocker / gamer will make him a sure thing with the voters.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

i just think mcnabb gets extra credit for being the star player on such a high profile team - but for the bulk of his career i dont think he's been more valuable than say steve mcnair (who everyone seems to agree is in the very good but not quite hof category) or drew bledsoe

wayne is a guy who i expect to produce into his mid-late 30s, and his candidacy will probably be predicated on that kind of long-term production

farting irl (cankles), Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

The only way I will be OK with a Vikings Super Bowl is if Favre cannot play in it and Tarvaris Jackson has to play. Ideally also Jared Allen will be unable to play as well, but if I see Favre holding up the Championship trophy and the Super Bowl MVP trophy I will probably have an existential crisis, because what kind of world would do such a horrible thing?

C-L, Sunday, 29 November 2009 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

I think for the receivers, it is all going to go with the guys that were on the clubs that won it all. Chris Carter and Andre Reed are still not in the hall of fame and there is no doubt that both of them were among the best of their time. It took them forever to put Art Monk in the hall and he was on a club that won 3 Superbowls. Tim Brown is not in and that guy was very solid for a long, long time and was a killer returner when he first started.

I would bet money the voters are also going to fxxk with both Randy Moss and especially Terrell Owens on getting into the hall. There are going to be some voters that are just going to plain not vote for either one of those guys no matter how many catches they get on their football card. Moss going to NE has kind of washed over a bit of his bad news from Minnesota and the Raiders, but all that crap that T.O. is going to really weigh down his votes. You can't argue on the results, but neither of them will get in first year and I got a feeling T.O. is going to have to wait for a good while.

Adrian Peterson is so sloppy with the ball.

That is why he was a great pick in the I Hate NFL league.

ESPNews just showed a stat saying that the Bengals have had five wins in the past decade with less than 100 yards passing, four of which are against the Browns, including today. Although none of those four was as ridiculous as a win against Denver in 2000 where they passed for 14 yards.

"art monk shouldnt and his inclusion is one of the biggest disgraces in the history of the hall"

I've got to disagree with you there. Monk definitely was one of the best receivers of the 80s. I think the gaudy passing stats that receivers put up in the 90s kind of obscures how good the guy really was. It's a crock that only one of the Hogs is in the Hall too. Some of the guys that were really good in the 70s and early to mid 80s seem to have gotten lost in the numbers crunch like guys like Stanley Morgan, Issac Curtis, Drew Pearson and Harold Carmichael. Those guys all went to bunch of Probowls, but their career stats look pretty small compared to the current guys. Of course, players play into their late 30s now, where that just didn't happen much until the 90s. Monk's career kind of spits between the end of the old numbers and the beginning of when the passing stats took off. The guy was a machine for a few years there. Monk wasn't really fast, but he was big like the current type wide-out and had great hands. I always thought Art Monk was pretty good and was great during the best years of those Redskins clubs.

This is a pretty wild chart to check out, look at the single-season recieving yards leaders. Most of these big number years is from the late 80s onward. I'm going to look it up, but they changed the rules on DBs being able to hit the wideouts a couple of times in the past 20 years and I bet it ties up when the passing yards exploded.

Reed and Carter should both be in by now too, as they were along with Rice some of the best of their time. Chris Carter had the best hands of any guy I ever saw play. If he could get his mitts on the ball, it was caught.

Irving Fryar was really good for a long time, but I think he got into a bit too much problem off the field and doesn't have the Superbowl wins like Irvin to get him over. Fryar was a really good return guy when he first got in the NFL out of Nebraska.

I think Aikman probably would have liked to have played longer, if it hadn't been for the concussions, and watching Favre doing well at age 40 is pissing him off, and making him secretly wish for Favre to get concussed, and have to spend the rest of his adult life in a tiny room sitting next to Joe Buck.

Charlie Joiner's career arc is much more like your modern receiver, as he had an amazingly long career for his time playing until he was 39. Joiner was a total good hands, good route receiver when with the Chargers paired with a #1 who was a deep threat like John Jefferson and later Wes Chandler, who were the deep threat guys. The Chargers also had maybe the first modern style TE in Winslow and would also throw a bit to their backs, more than some of the other clubs of the time. You also have to consider that Joiner played for a long time with Fouts, who was one of the few QBs that was putting up numbers that look like guys who play now.

Steve Largent left football he was the alltime leading receiver. He was also someone who never got on the field with the Cowboys. He stayed healthy and was the main. He was a dude.

I'd say Monk was up with both of those guys. He was bigger than either one. Kind of like Joiner, the Redskins generally had a 2nd reciever that was more of the deep treats with Charlie Brown and later on Gary Clark. Monk was the guy though when they needed a first down or close to the end zone. Monk caught 100 balls when that was a freaky thing to do.

Another dude that gets forgotten is Cliff Branch. That dude along with the Marks brothers in Miami were killer in the deep passing game.

More I think about it, the biggest change with passing was the whole Niners style passing game from bill Walsh. Clubs used to throw deep a heck of a lot more. Look up guy like Stanley Morgan, that guy's career receiving average is close to 20 yards a catch! He did that with Steve Grogan maybe throwing for a bit over 2000 yards for a season. It was much more all or nothing in the pass game unless you had a guy like Largent or Biletnikoff who could run routes and still get open and make a catch with Mel Blount or Mike Haynes hanging all over them.

FYI, I was wrong...none of the HOGS have been put into the hall of fame. Russ Grimm was a finalist but didn't make it last year. I'd think him and Joe Jacoby should be considered. Jacoby was a freak of nature for the time, just an absolutely enormous tackle. Those guys were all big for the time and kind of led to the huge lines you see today.

It was much more all or nothing in the pass game unless you had a guy like Largent or Biletnikoff who could run routes and still get open and make a catch with Mel Blount or Mike Haynes hanging all over them.

i guess we'll have to agree to disagree re: monk. I just don't see anything in his career that compares to what, say, Lance Alworth did for the Gillman Chargers in the 60s. you make a good point about the evolution of the short passing game though, it's another reason why certain records like Blanda's 42-INT season will never be broken. on that note, i was also gonna point out how miniscule monk's career ypc is... i'd have to check, but i dont think there's another hall of famer who has a ypc under 15 yards, let alone in the 13.5 range like monk.

AFC South has been the most competitive division the past two years. Houston would have make the playoffs last year but they can't beat the teams in their division, went 8-8 and 2-4 in division while being in the basement. You definitely not want to play them or the Titans compared to pretty much any other division basement club this year.

I think the NFC West really is the weak division and has been for years. There is generally one club, now being the Cards before it was the Seahawks that really a playoff contender, then everyone else is pretty weak.

AFC West was pretty bad last year when the Chargers won the division going 8-8, but I think them and the Broncos are a bit better. They do have two terrible clubs in KC and Oakland.

Hines Ward has always been a bit of a douchebag, but he is a Steeler so it doesn't stick. After winning the SB, he pretty much called out Dungy and Manning as being losers who would always be losers as they weren't 'tough' or something like that. Of course they won it all eventually, but that was something that stuck with me.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Monday, 30 November 2009 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

CBS will show the Colts or sometimes the Titans game if it doesn't go up against the Bengals. The Bengals are the home team around here, so all of their games get precedent on TV.

I do think the Titans winning 5 straight with the re-emergence of Vince Young and the best RB in the game going against an 11-0 Colts team is a good match-up.

earlnash, Monday, 30 November 2009 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Monday, 30 November 2009 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

Bengals/Lions isn't sold out, as they are advertising pretty heavy to sell tickets (first year in quite a few Cincy are not completely sold out for the season). The Bengals or some local company has been buying up whatever is left to keep them from getting blacked out on TV.

earlnash, Monday, 30 November 2009 03:04 (fifteen years ago)

horseshoe, Monday, 30 November 2009 03:06 (fifteen years ago)

Why of all years do the Bengals not sell out *this* year? (Besides the economy, obvs) They're on top of their division!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 November 2009 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

Paul Brown Stadium is pretty big, with the boxes it is over 70,000 seats. They sold out the Steelers and most of their other home games, but their home stretch run was the Browns, Lions and Chiefs, not exactly clubs people are dying to see. I think there is a bit of hangover from completely flopping last year too, along with the economy. I was surprised they were advertising for game seats for the Browns, as that is always a big game no matter how much the clubs stink.

Off-topic, but...

Recapping lol-CFL ending of the Grey Cup for you non-Canucks:

--Saskatchewan Roughriders lead 20-10, force a punt from the Montreal Alouettes near midfield early in Q4. Punt sails into the endzone for a single point (aka "rouge"). Montreal called for illegal procedure (illegal shift) on the punt, not a dead ball foul. Sask decline the penalty, conceding the point and taking the ball at their 35. They later lose the game by this point.

--Sask scores a TD on the ensuing drive, lead 27-11 with 8 minutes left. This is not a safe lead in the CFL.

--Montreal drives 84 yards in 6 plays for a touchdown, as Saskatchewan's pass rush disappears. 2-point convert makes it 27-19, a one score game.

--Sask's rushing attack (22 for 191 for the game) disappears. On 2nd and long (3 down football, so 2nd down = 3rd, more or less), [Sask QB] rolls out to his right under pressure and throws a lame duck that gets picked off. Als ball at midfield, 6 minutes left.

--Montreal drives the length of the field, converting a crucial 3rd and 3 around the Sask 15. On 2nd and goal, [Montreal QB] gets flushed from the pocket, pulls up short right at the line of scrimmage and throws a strike to an uncovered slotback for 6, 27-25.

--2-point conversion attempt incomplete after the Sask DB chucks the WR in the endzone illegally, uncalled. Still 27-25, 2 minutes left. Als have used their (only) timeout of the half. This is not a safe lead in the CFL.

--Sask gets the ball at its 15 after a terrible kickoff return. Obvious run call gets stuffed. Obvious short pass gets stuffed. With 51 seconds left they punt. Ball hits the Montreal PR in the hands, he fumbles it. Als blocker hustles back and covers the fumble, saving the game for his team. Sask nets 65 yards on the exchange.

--Als have the ball on their own 35 with 40 seconds left, no timeouts. 2 complete passes (23 and 17 yards) and 2 incompletions later, they're in field goal range. Sask rush 3 and get no pressure. Clock stops automatically until whistled in, so the Als work the middle of the field to complete their last pass to the Sask 35 with 10 seconds left. No timeouts, but the field goal unit has lots of time to get set up.

--Field goal attempt from the 43 (goalposts are at the front of the endzone in the CFL) to win the championship. Kick is up, wide right! Returner takes missed kick out of the end zone, slides to the ground as time expires. Saskatchewan Roughriders win the Grey Cup, 27-25.

--Flags on the field. Sask called for illegal substitution, found to have 13 men on the field (CFL is 12 per side). Video later confirms 12 at the line, plus the returner in the endzone. CBC TV shows Sask coordinator in press box, smacks own face then bends all the way over turning away from the field, giving national TV audience a view of his be-khakied backside.

--10 yard penalty, re-try field goal from the 33. It's good.

--Montreal Alouettes win the Grey Cup.

--Live CBC interview with Anthony Calvillo, Montreal QB, who gives "all credit to our Lord and Savior" and exclaims suddenly "what a joyous moment, what a joyous moment!"

--Heavily Sask-supporting crowd files out of Calgary's McMahon stadium disappointed. Luckily farm people are used to disappointment.

--CBC announcer makes strained pun about the "13th man" (crowd noise) turning out to Saskatchewan's disadvantage after all...

earlnash, Monday, 30 November 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Monday, 30 November 2009 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

A little bit of luck in the 4th quarter and the Texans could be in the place of the Colts. They have now lost FOUR in a row and six games over all on 4th quarter drives. It is always close in the NFL, but losing that many tight games is never good for anyone's resume.

It would be funny if Shanahan was the guy to replace Kubiak.

Buck Utah (rockapads), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

Criminy, the Steelers should have been trying some of that spread offense stuff earlier. That Dixon is really fast for a QB.

earlnash, Monday, 30 November 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

If you got someone that can make those plays, might as well give them a chance.

earlnash, Monday, 30 November 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

I think for like 2 or 3 years now the Texans have always seemed like they were right on the verge of becoming really really good, but I don't watch them closely enough to know if that is Kubiak not finding it or the players not being able to get past the verge.

C-L, Monday, 30 November 2009 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

kubiak started in a worse personnel situation than people realized - the offense has mostly been overrated, thanks to conventional fantasy stats better than its on-field performance - also hitching his wagon to a QB who misses 5 games a year may not have been a great move

farting irl (cankles), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

Texans are pretty bad about turning the ball over in key times.

I've been down on Al since he was on Kornheiser's radio show a few years ago and all he wanted to talk about was how any amount of taxes he had to pay was too much taxes.

drew brees raises an interesting point - why ISN'T he throwing for like 800 yards? i demand a senate investigation.

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:38 (fifteen years ago)

Vikings haven't really beaten anyone yet. Two Green Bay wins, a close one against an okay Ravens team, and then a bunch of chumps. Plus one loss against Pittsburgh.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

i enjoyed lynch wrecking brees' san diego shoulder, but now it's all in the past, i <3 the drew brees saints.

http://i46.tinypic.com/2vl44lx.jpg

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:41 (fifteen years ago)

wait, i'm sure drew brees is a jerkass whiteboy like everyone who isn't "peyton manning funniest television actor ever" but!

They are being treated probably 10 times better than any prisoner in a U.S. prison

all of his comments are actually liberal debatable from a "you have no idea what you are talking about but are maybe trying to make a point" perspective so i still hold out judgment on him! his point is very much "arabs should be beaten" but it's also still vaguely possible that his misstated point is that the us prison system is a horrific thing that more liberals and progressives should be upset over.

ok, i'm reaching, but you can see it if you read it in the most positive light possible! unlike comments by a lot of other players who can't even be twisted :\

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

he doesn't sound like an asshole there, just dumb

horseshoe, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

He didn't vote for his own mother!

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:43 (fifteen years ago)

and also the most terrible game i ever saw, from a personal abuse standpoint, was at fedex so I just recommend going there, like how one swims with sharks, once, and then never again.

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:43 (fifteen years ago)

The Saints with Mike McKenzie and Darren Sharper have two ex-Packers in their defensive backfield. I got to think this is a bit of a plus going against Favre, as they have seen his shit a bunch.

earlnash, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

that was actually what i thought when i read that again - not that he was making a point, just that he was right, the u.s. prison system is a dystopian nightmare

farting irl (cankles), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

oh i almost hit somebody the first time i was at fedex (drunk idiots spilling beer/bumping into us constantly). in fact i am pretty well sure my bff insisted we leave partway into the second half because i was really about to lose my temper & was like OH HELL NO we are not moving to those empty seats in the other section, we are keeping OUR seats

yeah, whatever (daria-g), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

lol 'our seats' is what always keeps me in the fight. I BOUGHT THESE SEATS. YOU GO TO HELL.

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:48 (fifteen years ago)

i was possibly most offended by the fact that these dudes knew f***-all about football and seemed to think whatever skill position player had the ball was the only guy on the field responsible for the outcome of a given play, therefore screaming YOU F***ING SUCK constantly was appropriate

yeah, whatever (daria-g), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

seriously! i always do this, people are like well, we could just move, and i'm like NO THIS IS MY SEAT, if someone else is causing a problem THEY need to move. ok i did this at a bar two weeks ago as well

yeah, whatever (daria-g), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 04:50 (fifteen years ago)

when i finally give up in a bar on tht, i end up "accidentally" elbowing people on the way out. see also: the subway
