After he was released by the St. Louis Rams on Tuesday, guard Richie Incognito said he anticipates that he'll be made to look like the bad guy and coach Steve Spagnuolo will be made to look like the good guy.

"Spags comes out looking like a hero," Incognito told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He got Incognito. He ran Incognito out of town. Perception's everything. So that's what it's going to be perceived as."

ndianapolis at Jacksonville: Indianapolis
Dallas at New Orleans: New Orleans
New England at Buffalo: New England
Arizona at Detroit: Arizona
Miami at Tennessee: Tennessee
Last week 11-5, for the year 141-67.

Cleveland at Kansas City- I'm going way out and taking the Browns on the road (I should be checked). Cleveland's D is better than KC and I think the Browns might be able to throw against the Chiefs.
Houston at St. Louis- Houston SHOULD win this one, but sometimes they let clubs around. As bad as the Rams been, is Spagnola starting to get some static? Heck the Rams are worse than Cameron's Dolphins and they only won 1 game.
Atlanta at NY Jets- I don't trust either of these clubs really, but I guess take the Jets at home against the backup QB.
San Francisco at Philadelphia- Eagles should win, but the Niner's are playing pretty good of late.
Chicago at Baltimore- I hope the Bears knock them off, but I figure the Ravens will win. Cutler is pretty shell shocked, but that is kind of the state of grace for a Bear Qb.
Cincinnati at San Diego- I'd like to see the Bengals go old school and knock off a top Chargers club, which they did back in the old days in a couple of big games when Fouts was the QB in SD. Chargers are cooking pretty good and should win.
Oakland at Denver- Charlie Frye sighting in Oaktown, but the Broncos should win this one at home pretty easy.
Green Bay at Pittsburgh- I could believe the Steelers would bounce back, but Green Bay seems to have it working right now.
Tampa Bay at Seattle- Tampa sucks and Seattle is just terrible, Seahawks it is.
Minnesota at Carolina- Panthers are dull as dishwater and there is still something about the Vikings that doesn't seem it, but Minnesota should win.
NY Giants at Washington- The Giants are all ass backwards, their D sucks and they are a pass happy club. That doesn't seem like Giants football. The Redskins seem to have gotten their offense doing what it could do and not trying wild stuff that doesn't fit. That being said, I'll take the Giants by a point or two.

Glenn Beck is also forgetting that people used to die all the time playing football in the days before helmets. Criminy there was people wanting to outlaw the game back when Teddy Roosevelt was President as it was so dangerous.

That being said, Beck you are welcome to play anytime with out a helmet. That probably would explain a few things.

earlnash, Thursday, 17 December 2009 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

I think the most severe concussion I saw this year was Roethlisberger's, which was mostly the fault of an unlucky unintentional meeting of one dude's head with another dude's knee, instead of an intentional attempt to run a guy's head into the ground as hard as possible. I don't even want to think about what would happen to an unprotected head on that kind of collision, or any of the other incidental contact concussions that go down every year. But really the idea that guys are going to somehow give up the whole ethos of playing as hard as possible (especially when there's a thousand other guys who would be willing to jump in at a moment's notice) in a sport based on very large, very strong, very fast people hitting each other is stupid.

Although, to be fair, a no-helmet rule would probably have prevented the most hilarious concussion (maybe the only hilarious concussion) ever, Gus Frerotte's headbutt of the wall.

Chad Ochocinco now also fined four times this year. As a wide receiver he's the number one fined wide receiver in football, but he's 19th in receptions. This guy is no longer a Pro Bowl player. He's an absolute sideshow. He's an embarrassment to the franchise. The other aspect to all of this, you would think Marvin Lewis would have enough of it, sit him down and deactivate him. Mike Brown will never allow Marvin Lewis to sit down the sideshow that is Chad Ochocinco. It's a shame, because they're having a great season. - Boomer Esiason

A) #19 in receptions is not bad considering there are at least 64 wide receivers in the league, and he's also something like #10 in TDs. He's productive with his receptions so wtf, stfu
B) he doesn't get penalized so why do the Bengals care about whether or not he acts like a clown? it's his money.
C) OK NOT TO BE CRASS CONSIDERING WHAT GOOGLING "BENGALS RECEIVER" GETS YOU TODAY, BUT WHO ARE THEY BENCHING HIM FOR??

I was just at a restaurant and I could see him on the tv talking about something, but couldn't hear what he was saying. I probably would've flipped the table and thrown my drink at the screen if I'd heard that.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 December 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'm so glad Mercury Morris played in the 70s before the TV coverage of football got out of hand. Is being complimented by a convicted felon for being classy really a compliment?

Crap I didn't do all the games when I pasted them in...
Indianapolis at Jacksonville- I'll take Indy and and this will probably be the week they lose. I've picked them 2 or 3 times to lose and it hasn't happened. These J-ville/Indy games are always really physical. Both clubs have lost bunches of players out of these games with injury. I could believe the Jags could win, especially if they run rampant like they did just before the playoffs the year the Colts won it all. The Jags ran for like 900 yards in that game and that is what led to everyone calling the Colts DOA.
Dallas at New Orleans- NO has kept some lesser clubs in games and then seems to rock the decent teams. I'll take the Saints but I could see Cowboys.
New England at Buffalo- I'll take NE.
Arizona at Detroit- The Cards SHOULD roll, but you never know.
Miami at Tennessee- Tough game, but I'm going Miami by a field goal or less. Dolphins are a pretty good club and I think could be setting up to be a top line team next year.

ahahahahaha

horseshoe, Friday, 18 December 2009 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

bucking can still occur for a number of reasons:

* Happiness, such as when a horse bucks during a gallop because he is enjoying himself, or during play.
* General excitement, such as horses that buck in a crowded schooling ring or at the beginning of a ride in a crowd of horses, such as an endurance ride.
* The rider's aids are causing confusion or fear in the horse, and the horse responds by bucking.
* The horse is "fresh," having been kept up in a stall for a long period of time, and is releasing pent-up energy.
* Pain, which may be due to an ill-fitting saddle or another piece of equipment, tooth problems, or other medical issues.
* Provocation, usually due to an insect bite (usually on the hindquarters) which the horse is trying to rid himself of, or in some cases a response to use of a whip on the flank or hindquarters.
* Untrained horses may instinctually buck the first few times they have a saddle on the back if not given proper ground training, and occasionally, even with proper preparation. This is an instinctive defense mechanism.
* Having found that bucking the rider off results in not having to work, the horse does it to avoid his exercise.
* Disobedience to the riding aids, when a horse does not wish to do what is asked by the rider. Sometimes this is due to poor riding on the part of the person, but sometimes a horse attempts to evade a legitimate request by bucking.
* Rodeo broncs are used specifically as bucking horses, usually bred to be prone to bucking and encouraged to buck whenever a rider is on their back with the help of a "bucking strap" around their flank.
* Fear of loud and noisy machines, like cars, trucks, trains, and planes. In response to the tragic injuries that have resulted, the courts have uniformly held that "the needs of a modern, industrial society often conflict with and generally must prevail over the delicate sensibilities of horses."[1]

* The rider's aids are causing confusion or fear in the horse, and the horse responds by bucking.

It is very hard not to read this as "The rider's AIDS", with the horse just afraid that there might be some accidental blood cross-contamination.

Sam Wyche is kind of like the Jerry Brown of NFL coaches. You see people talking like the dude is a total loon, but half the sXXT he did ended up being dead on target. That offense he ran in Cinci is pretty similar to the a bunch of the stuff Manning has run his whole career and was used by the Bills to get to 4 Superbowls.

Has Tampa had a kickoff return go back for a TD yet? I seem to remember that was a big thing a while back in that they had never had a KO return for a TD or something like that.

earlnash, Friday, 18 December 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

Papa's call wasn't as bad at that Chris Myers one from like week 2: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d812c19c9

Maybe something about running one back against the Jags just doesn't excite the PBP guys this year.

C-L, Friday, 18 December 2009 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

I guess it happened...still took 32 years (criminy).

Until December 16, 2007, the Buccaneers were the only NFL team to have never returned a kick-off for a touchdown during the regular season. This distinction ended when Micheal Spurlock returned the 1,865th try 90 yards for the score during the week 15 game against the Atlanta Falcons.[20]

earlnash, Friday, 18 December 2009 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

Also I finally watched "The U" the other day and I am disappointed he did not come back out of the tunnel firing finger guns.

xp 32 years! And Tampa was awful for like a third of them.

Neighbor Lee Hardy told WLWT-TV and The Cincinnati Enquirer that he was working in his yard when the truck left the driveway. Hardy said Henry was yelling that he needed to talk to the woman behind the wheel.

"He said, 'If you take off, I'm going to jump off the truck and kill myself,'" Hardy told the newspaper.

If this is accurate -- and note the IF -- then fuck this dude, fuck anybody who indulges in this sort of high-school-level drama.

WmC, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

ESPN hearsay yesterday was making his fiancee out to be the person who really put him on the right path, kind of a motherly girl who urged him to better himself. If that's true, and this guy's quote is true, it makes Henry seem like a really emotionally fragile manchild (which explains a lot about his previous behavior).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

That seems to be the word dated all the way back to Henry's college days. By most accounts, he was a shy dude who didn't like the limelight, felt uncomfortable speaking before reporters, and had trouble in school. People who dealt with him on a personal basis liked him. In contrast to Pac Man, who most people thought was a gaping asshole.

BALTIMORE—The Bears were unable to leave Chicago late Friday night as their United charter flight was canceled, making it uncertain when the team will travel to Baltimore for its game Sunday with the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Typically, the Bears depart for road games on Saturday afternoon. The major snowstorm that was projected led the team to move up its travel plans to Friday night. The charter was expected to leave at 10: 30 p.m., but the team sat on the plane for two hours before the flight was canceled.

When Flair said: “To be the man, you’ve got to beat the man. Whoo!” Scott repeated every word, calling that sentence the “most realistic line in the history of life.” His wife, Darnesha, walked past and shook her head.

“Forget trash talking in football,” Scott said. “This is trash talking at its finest. This is what I aspire to.”

..

Scott uses a three-step trash-talk template. He starts with research. He scours ESPN, Google and scouting reports, which include pictures. He wants to understand the opponents he will talk to, understand what angers them, what makes them tick. He looks for police incidents, problems with wives or girlfriends, expanding stomachs, funny faces.

My ideal Vikings playoff loss scenario is still:

Doesn't matter who the 3, 4, or 6 seeds are (assumption is Arizona and two of Eagles/Cowboys/Giants), Packers are the 5.

6 seed beats the 3
Packers beat the 4

Which sets up the second week:

Saints vs. 6 seed
Packers vs. Vikings III: Final Blood.

If Packers are able to play the Vikings a third time and then beat the Vikings finally, then I will fall down weeping and give praise unto the Lord. If Vikings win a third time I assume an existential crisis would follow.

Vikings beat Cowboys/Eagles
Packers upset the very beatable Saints

Packers vs. Vikings III: Final Blood, for the NFC.

I think I would actually prefer Packers vs. Vikings III: Final Blood to be in the Divisional week, because I do not know that I would ever be the same again if Brett Favre beat the Packers to go to the Super Bowl. I mean obviously if Aaron Rodgers beats the Vikings to go to the Super Bowl that would probably be the greatest thing that ever happened, but I would almost certainly die of a brain aneurysm from the stress of waiting for that game and worrying about that game. At least if the Packers lost in the Final Blood game I could be relatively confident knowing the Vikings would probably not be able to escape both the Saints and the Colts. If the Vikings go to the Super Bowl I am going to have to bandwagon the Colts/Chargers/Bengals/maybe even the Patriots like my life depends on it. Because otherwise you guys, it's not just that Brett Favre wins a (second) ring, but so does Jared Allen. (I wish nothing but the best for Adrian Peterson, preferably on another team.)

In conclusion I have basically spent part of every day since Packers-Vikings II: Failed Vengeance thinking about the potential scenarios for a third game, and my ability to withstand those possibilities physically and emotionally.

The club in the NFC I am curious to see if they are for real or not in the next couple of weeks is the Eagles. They looked headed to the Superbowl last year and had one of their befuddling games against the Cards. Going into the year with the talent they brought in, I'd pretty much say they were the real top NFC Superbowl contender. They really kind of flubbed the first half of the year, but have been rolling for a while. They have seemed to figure out how to get first downs in short yardage, which was a big problem.

I thought I would have RedZone access because my parents inevitably buy all the cable channels and then do not use any of them, but they end up having NFLN without having RedZone. On the one hand, I am kind of horrified that Jets-Falcons is the only game offered to the LA metro area right now, but then, it is also 75 degrees outside, and then back at my apartment where I have RedZone it snowed a whole ton yesterday. Having to watch the Jets seems like a reasonable price to pay, I guess.

Ugh. Just watched that sad sad Saints game. Of all the goddamn games to lose this season, it's gotta be against those fucks??!
I was a little worried when i checked the injury report a few days ago and saw that our entire offensive line was having "limited" practices. Plus they threw Fujita in too much, they should've eased him back in, I think it made our whole already unstable defense totally confused and off-game. Also, I am now looking forward to the collapse of American civilization if only to witness Dallas make the Crow's depiction of Detroit seem like a nice place to live.

I think the one weakness with the Dom Capers 3-4 is that the GB secondary playing off receivers lets people get behind them way more than they did last year. I could be wrong but it seems like there have been way more giant plays scored on them this year.

C-L, Sunday, 20 December 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

That Jets/Falcons game put me into a coma. I'm waking up to find that Cleveland dropped 41 points with their QB throwing for 66 yards in a win. What is that about? It's like the worse they pass, the better they have a chance at winning...crazy.

The Titans/Dolphins game looked like it would have been fun to watch unlike that Jets snoozefest. How about Ricky? 1000 yard rushing season this year 5 after his last one. That has to be a rare occurrence.

Can Steelers still go to the playoffs with a loss this game?

Mordy, Monday, 21 December 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, when Roethlisberger has time to throw he can be lethal.

C-L, Monday, 21 December 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

Or he can throw an interception!

Mordy, Monday, 21 December 2009 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Monday, 21 December 2009 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

Woodson has been all-world this year, but the bump & run guys are having a little trouble adjusting to playing off receivers, so there have been a bunch of plays that got past them. The final Pittsburgh TD is normally something they would have a good shot against, but that was pretty brilliantly executed, so there's not much you can do, other than wonder what you've done to anger God.

yeah i'd argue that the vikes haven't proved anything yet--they're now 4-3 on the road, philly can catch them, they might be able to catch nola (not sure what the tiebreak is if both teams are 13-3), and really need to be beating a shitty carolina team if they have designs on actually winning in the playoffs.

i'm not arguing that brett lost them the game; the panthers defense (excepting that one AP run) really held tight. He didn't have a great game in any case.

Holmgren, who stepped down as Seattle's coach after last season to spend time with his family, has left open the possibility of returning to the sideline. Holmgren said "any and all" when he was asked if Lerner's offer included the opportunity to coach and be the team's chief executive.

NFLN just had a mic'd up segment with Tony Romo, during which he offered kisses to his coaches if they'd let him call a certain play. This basically boils down exactly what is wrong with the Cowboys, that they are making their QB trade sexual favors for better plays.

yeah, pretty much. they're better than, say, the 7-7 falcons at pretty much every position except for QB and TE. they've also had some pretty big injuries ending the seasons of some of their better players (jordan gross, thomas davis) and have one of the worst DT situations in the league. with a better passing offense and more beef on the d-line, they could be the class of the nfc.

farting irl (cankles), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

as for holmgren to cleveland... i think he's kind of a mixed bag. i think he'd be a GREAT coach for them, he'd be just the guy to take an offense with some young, promising talent and turn it into something functional. but his track record as a GM for seattle shows that he has little to no eye for defensive talent. still, he could probably do some good out there.

I was feeling really strong about tonight, it was my last day of having to go into the office for two weeks, and getting to go on holiday and work from home, then I went to a new hair salon where they gave us high end bourbon and we listened to Billy Idol and there was a 4 month old French Bulldog puppy and we decided a look for me would be "Jane Birkin + Joan Jett" (needs a little more Joan Jett next time but def an A+) then I saw a cop car that was completely plowed in by a snowplow and then THAT happened. thanks, ESPN.

then Charlie Sheen showed up on tv and tried to show Michael Jordan his underpants and the Redskins are wearing red pants + red shirts which is a bad look and it's just...I dunno. Might have to rethink my earlier "today is strong" opinion.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

Nicks hands get a bit rusty at times like last week, but the guy is pretty quick.

The game has put the odds in the passing games hands so much, just about anyone can throw for 300 yards and complete 60 percent of his passes.

I think they should maybe try and level it out a bit the other way, but it probably won't happen.

My thought was to let the DB be able to have contact with the receiver up to 10 yards instead of 5. That way, it pays more to go deep and makes the dink and dunk game a bit more work. Right now the defensive players can almost have less contact with the receivers than in freaking basketball and that is just not right.

C-L, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

I'd imagine for the Nationals being in DC, the biggest problem is that any big club comes in there is probably more fans for the visiting club than the home side. I'd imagine the DC area has a bit more than average population that moved there from someplace else, so it is amplified.

It pretty much took Peyton Manning and success year after year to kill that stuff off with the Colts. For a long time if they played the Bears, Cowboys, Steelers, etc, the Colts fans were outnumbered in the stands. That has changed pretty much now.

It is not often found in the NFL, due to the danger of a quarterback injury.

C-L, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

The play, originally formulated in the 1930s, still retains a modicum of popularity on high school and college teams, where the lesser athleticism of the players will allow the play to be performed with a greater degree of success.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

LANDOVER, Md. -- After being sacked for the third time, Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell has left the game with a shoulder injury and his return is questionable. Looks like Osi Umenyiora beat left tackle Levi Jones on an outside move to sack Campbell from behind.

But Campbell's already been hit so many times it's hard to determine when the injury may have occurred. I don't expect Campbell's Todd Collins to do a lot better, although he did hit Santana Moss on a deep ball.

-- Uh, what exactly is the relationship between Campbell and Collins?

Eligibility

The draft is the first chance teams get to conduct contract negotiations with players who have been out of high school for two years. Most drafted players come directly out of NCAA programs as seniors or juniors, all players entering the draft must have at least three years of college experience , while some players are selected from other professional leagues like the Arena Football League. All players who choose to enter the selected year's draft must sign an agent prior to entering the draft. A player who is drafted but does not sign a contract can sit out that season, which is referred to as a "holdout", and can re-enter the draft the following year unless they were told differently by the NFL commissioner.[3]

earlnash, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

i mean can it possibly be a coincidence that this is the conclusion of the week where everyone agreed shanahan is coming in next year?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'll say one thing, winning a Superbowl really does change perception, even in NY. Considering how flaky the Giants have been over the last year and a half, I haven't seen them really going after Coughlin. That is saying something considering it was about a hobby every week for the media before they won a Superbowl.

If Shanahan is going to be the coach, they would be better off just having Zorn getting fired and having Shanahan walk in for the end and let him get a bit of yelling in on what is left. Then again, Shanahan is not really a screamer type, so it won't happen.

earlnash, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:47 (fifteen years ago)

gah shanahan is a bigger idiot than i thought he was, even, if he's willing to go into this shitshow. snyder just destroyed zorn's soul, for god's sake. he is, by all appearances, an extremely horrible man.

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

If Snyder is smart, which he probably won't be, he will hire some smart football people to run the player side of the club and stay out of the way.

The Colts were horrible and moved under a trash owner. His son takes over, he hires a GM that knows what the heck he is doing and the son stayed out of the football side of the business. Guess what, it worked.

I wonder how long the talent that Parcells in Dallas is going to hold together for Jones' running the club?

farting irl (cankles), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

good lord this newsweek article

But while he's beefed up the Redskins' bottom line, Snyder's lost more than just games. He's lost something that no other team had: the support of the most powerful people in the country. This is a team that over the years has counted presidents, senators, and Supreme Court justices among its most die-hard fans. In a town as partisan as D.C., the Redskins were the one unifier, the one thing that Republicans and Democrats could both cheer for.

seriously who the fuck cares? i mean for real, who the fuck cares if Important People like the team? so dumb

Interviews with six members of the Vikings organization revealed that Brad Childress ripped his offense during halftime Sunday and that he privately unleashed an expletive-laden outburst toward Brett Favre long after the game in the visitors' locker room.

"They pretty much did the one thing that we didn't want them to do," Smith said, "and that was an all-out rush. We thought we could catch them by surprise and get them kinda in a safe mode, and I think we probably had 'em in that mode except for they called a timeout."

i think zorn is still flummoxed when the opposing team "hands" the ball to what they call a "running back"

people should just use the play to trick people into using their time outs, then run a normal play.

I do think going for it on fourth down and 2 seconds remaining was the right decision, because field goals were pointless and they don't have a good field goal kicker anyway, but they should have switched to a conventional passing play imo.

not sure if Zorn is aware that the other team is allowed to discuss defensive strategy during timeouts

Is Zorn even allowed to participate in the playcall?
