total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 January 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

Bengals, Cowboys, Pats, Packers

Fetchboy, Thursday, 7 January 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

i am excitedly anticipating whatever hilarious mishap causes the 'boys to throw their game away. bengals-jets is going to be 3-0 one way or the other for the chance to be humped by indy. pats will win their only playoff game here and somehow it will involve baltimore being heartbreakingly unlucky or stupid. green bay will play a great game and put up nice looking numbers, and may not even notice that they have lost until they get back to wi and see it on the news.

aarrissi-a-roni, Thursday, 7 January 2010 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

eagles-boys will be fun imo because one of them will lose

the bait vs. radrake david (k3vin k.), Friday, 8 January 2010 05:10 (fifteen years ago)

I love to watch them play, but not as much as I hate watching the Cowboys play, and especially not as much as I despise the Cowboys Terrordome.

lazy cold meat and chocolate seasonal mentality (forksclovetofu), Friday, 8 January 2010 06:37 (fifteen years ago)

Wide receiver Josh Cribbs has cleaned out his locker a day after his agent told ESPN.com the Cleveland Browns were "insulting" his client with low-ball offers.

Cribbs expressed his disappointment on his Twitter feed on Thursday: "I'm sorry guys i don't want to seem greedy but fair is fair & there is no way around it, i'm the best at what I do but paid the lowest. Hmmm."

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 January 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

um meanwhile

Amazingly, even after the NFL won the case, it asked the Supreme Court to dramatically expand the ruling and determine that the teams act as a single entity not only for marketing hats and gear, but for pretty much everything the league does. It was an odd request -- similar to my asking an official to review an 80-yard pass of mine that the official had already ruled a touchdown.

OOH GET YOUR MR. 80-YARD-TD-PASS! braggin 2010! also drew brees shouldn't you be practicing and not writing 50 million word essays on anti-trust law for the Post?

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Friday, 8 January 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

lol, it couldn't have just been any old 80 yard pass. it was specifically his. only drew brees throws 80 yard tds around here, alrite?

aarrissi-a-roni, Friday, 8 January 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

and it's a TD too, of course. don't forget that.

earlnash, Saturday, 9 January 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

You guys are never going to believe this, but Braylon Edwards dropped an easy touchdown.

doesn't it seem weird to have the pro-bowl before the super bowl? what if someone starting on one of the SB teams gets hurt?

richie aprile (rockapads), Saturday, 9 January 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

i assume guys from the super bowl teams will not care

call all destroyer, Saturday, 9 January 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

call all destroyer, Saturday, 9 January 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

If you're playing in the Super Bowl you are ineligible to play in the game.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Saturday, 9 January 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

and i like it--the super bowl should be the final nfl game of the season

call all destroyer, Saturday, 9 January 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

Peko is a very solid D-lineman. He has made a big difference for the Bengals in stopping the run game in the past couple of years. I think he is a big reason Cincy has continued to have some decent pass rush even after Odom went down, who was sadly having a great season when he was done.

earlnash, Saturday, 9 January 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

the whiskey ward is a good place if you're in the lower east side, good classic cocktail selection. i also live basically around the corner from char no. 4 in cobble hill, which has a giant wall of bourbons and ryes, rare & pricey stuff as well as great midrange and budget selections. they also serve REALLY good food - their blt sandwich is one of the best things i've ever eaten. though they keep trying to invent cocktails by changing out tequila/gin/vodka in classics and putting in, like, bourbon instead - not sure how i feel about their cocktails. fette sau in williamsburg also has a large whiskey selection and good BBQ food (not just "good for NYC BBQ"). xpost jmod got me while i was writing this long mess.

the problem i have with the nutrition nazi thread is that the diet being staunchly advocated there, while perfectly healthy, is not for everyone and the theory behind it - and what it will not allow you to eat - is not based in any kind of scientific/biological/historical fact and it saddens me to see people i like basically apologizing because they, like, put a teaspoon of milk in a cup of tea. but this is not the place for this argument, and i wouldn't really want to take it up on the thread either because i like cutty muchly despite him being a manorexic!

Palmer broke a bone in his non-throwing hand near the beginning of the season, that is why he has been handing it off all wrong.

There was at least a half dozen short passes though that bounced off his recievers hands or numbers. The Bengals need a better TE pretty bad, as the ones they have have hands of stone.

Cincy has been running a very conservative offense all year. Some of the games they were almost too conservative.

The 'boys got busted in a wildcat, where they forgot that Vick used to actually be able to throw. There was no deep safety at all. Once the receiver got past the corner he was gone. I'd bet Andy Reid has been holding that kind of deep pass play out all year with that Vick waiting for the right moment to use it.

romo is so zen motorcycle club~
He insisted that he knew this day would come and said he didn't feel an overwhelming sense of relief.
"It didn't feel like that to me, maybe because I've only been playing for four years now," he said after the game. "But we played two of them before, and I felt like one of them was my fault, so it didn't feel like this was the most impossible thing ever that everyone made it out to be. The other thing is, if you're good enough, you'll win. If I wasn't good enough to win a playoff game as a quarterback, then I wouldn't have."

the article is so bad, like all ny times style pieces. saying point blank in the article "experts disagree with this diet" midway thru without providing any counterpoint besides that whatsoever would've gotten me thrown out of my journalism 101 class, never mind an actual fucking freelance piece but this does not ever hold back the times style section. There is a whole streak of Libertarian sentiment in Crossfit people (which is not to say that these people in the article are exactly representative). I assume it's just that fanatical workout/lifestyle regimens are so much about pushing yourself through pain to get to results that you assume that if you're successful, you assume that anybody who is unhealthy or fat or whatever just isn't willing to put in the kind of work and effort that you do.

I didn't watch this game, but:

J. Flacco, 4/10, 34 yards, 1 INT

This has to be the worst performance by a quarterback in a blowout playoff win ever, right?

unfortunately, in the uncapped year, it's going to be v. different to improve personnel so the pats will have trouble getting legit playmakers on defense and anyone decent to catch passes on offense.

that being said, they NEED coaching help desperately. preferably someone from the outside to run the offense.

Were you prepared for the Ravens’ level of intensity?
I don’t think they really did anything different.

Any indications in practice this week that you weren’t ready?
No. We obviously didn’t play well.

What did Baltimore do in the running game?
They ran it better than we defended it. There isn’t any one thing you can single out. They did a good job.

Where do you go from here?
Well, our season’s over.

In addition to being disappointed, are you shocked?
No.

Maroney only had one carry – any reason?
We were behind a lot in the game.

But yeah right now blaaaaaagggghhhhh whyyyyyy

k3vin k., Monday, 11 January 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

Oh no, 4th and 26 was way worse. I was watching it with some people who didn't like the Packers because of the nonstop love affair with Brett Favre, and they started taunting me right after McNabb completed it (to Freddie Mitchell, UCLA alum, which is the only good thing I could take from it), and I basically got so upset that they were all like "Whoa, OK, sorry" and then I felt like I had some rage issues that needed to be worked on. Like on the list of all-time inappropriate responses to sports I've ever had, that was definitely top 5.

Just got back from watching that amazing Packers/Cardinals game.

Two observations I'm sure have been made over-and-over now (so apologies in advance): The Ravens had almost as many points as Joe Flacco had passing yards (wtf?) and Kurt Warner had more touchdowns than incompletions (WTF!)

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 January 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, there were lots of missed penalties on both sides in this game. I was watching it with some people and we tried to get mad about like Fitzgerald pulling OPI on that sick touchdown catch he made, and then about the masking on the last play, but for whatever reason I can't get super-worked up about it, there's not really anything that'll come from it other than making us seem like the "WE ARE AMERICA'S GREATEST VICTIMS" kind of fans. We maybe could have won if a few calls happened (or didn't happen), but we also could have won if we had been better at defense, and could have won if Rodgers hadn't overthrown Jennings on the first play in overtime.

C-L, Monday, 11 January 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)

Can't be upset by the effort of either team. Both quarterbacks were hitting players in stride, in places no defender could reach, splitting coverage. I can't see anyone having anything but respect for both teams. No reason for Packers fans to feel badly at all!

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 January 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

Aaron Rogers is a an amazing quarterback.

Kurt Warner, too, obv.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 January 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

watching kurt warner play like a HOFer, waffle on retirement after the season, and make leinart wait another season is like the reverse feelings i had when favre was doing it to rodgers.

A™ machine (sic) (omar little), Monday, 11 January 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

Rt. Warner hasn't been jerking Leinart's chain at all, is he?

I mean, to be fair, Farve wasn't jerking Rodgers' chain while Farve was still the starting Packers quarterback. He only was unfair when he flirted with the idea of returning after his first retirement.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 January 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

iirc

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 January 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

is leinart actually slated to be the starter once warner retires though? really?

also, i realized during tonight's game that usually i get super annoyed when the announcing crew spends most of their time talking about how great the qb is playing, but if they are talking about rodgers, it's alright.

looking forward to watching larry fitzgerald play more football

kicker conspiracy (s. suisham ha ha) (daria-g), Monday, 11 January 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure he is! Leinart was a big draft pick.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 January 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I see why the Packers invested their future in Rogers.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 11 January 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

Not just Larry, but Steve Breaston and Early Doucet too. Cards are way way deep at the talented WR spot.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 January 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

xxp yeah but he may not be, y'know, good. i assume he'd get a season at least tho

call all destroyer, Monday, 11 January 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

I think the story goes that Favre totally ignored Rodgers during Rodgers' first year, since he was not fond of the idea he was being replaced, and then they were OK in 2006 after Brett held out for part of training camp in the first will-he-or-won't-he year and Rodgers had to help get him up to speed on the new playbook, and then in 2007 Favre kind of pissed everyone in the organization off by doing the same thing again. And now they don't talk at all. You can totally tell where Rodgers picked things up from Favre, but the reason I really love Aaron Rodgers is that you can also see where he learned things by doing the opposite of Brett Favre's bad tendencies.

C-L, Monday, 11 January 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

i watched all of Ravens-Patriots and the first half of Packers-Cardinals god fucking dammit

balearific, Monday, 11 January 2010 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

Philip Rivers is probably the best I've seen in terms of "I can make that pass" vs. "Nobody's open, I'm getting rid of it". Always makes the Chargers-Steelers games really weird, since Roethlisberger will hold onto the ball forever, and occasionally can get something good to come out of it, and then Rivers will come on and almost never hold the ball any longer than he has to.

C-L, Monday, 11 January 2010 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

How strange it is that two teams recently were so rich with quarterback talent: Green Bay (Farve/Rodgers) and San Diego (Brees/Rivers). Teams go years -- even a decade or more -- hoping for one quarterback as good as any of these four!

k3vin k., Monday, 11 January 2010 03:29 (fifteen years ago)

The whole thing with Matt Leinart and Kurt Warner is way different than Rogers and Favre in that Leinart was the starter and really played his way out of a job in 2007. I don't think Warner is QBblocking him at all, Leinart has proven really not to be better or perhaps ever ready to take over anyway. If Leinart would have been playing great, I don't think Warner would have had a shot at the field and then taking over the job.

I'd think having those skills players would make it easier for Leinart to step in, but I'm not sure he is the real deal anyway.

both sides are true, I mean he's a generally good decision maker and good at scrambling, but he also keeps the ball too long / the oline can't be blamed for 100% of the sacks.

I'm so happy iln loves aaron rodgers, he's been my favorite player since his cal days (his big year there was my freshman year of college.) I spent years nervous that he wouldn't survive the limelight+wearing
favre's shoes. this game's ending was disappointing, but sorta in a 'eh doesn't really matter' way, cause a team that gives up 45 points in playoff game isn't gonna get to the super bowl.
