i don't even know what to think. i will never actually pick the vikings because of a lifetime of paranoia and superstition, but i think we can give them a good game...maybe

i don't know.

anyway i really hope the vikes win, i never thought we could get this close again, even if it is with favre and everyone hates us now.

wanna be shartin' somethin' (WmC), Monday, 18 January 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

I'm beginning to wonder if there is a hex on being the "most accurate kicker in NFL history". Kaeding is like the second in line with the drunken kicker from Canada to have that title and then completely bomb in the playoffs.

Scott Norwood was a pretty accurate kicker and in hindsight that was a pretty long kick against the Giants and he never returned, but I wonder if at the time he was "the most accurate kicker in NFL history" when that went down.

earlnash, Monday, 18 January 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

Looking at the charts, I'm thinking that Gary Anderson might have been the "most accurate kicker in NFL history" or pretty damn close when he shanked that one for the Vikings a few years back. Most of the guys ahead of him started after 98. Anderson definitely was one of the elite kickers when he shanked that one.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/fg_perc_career.htm

You have to wonder.

Don't think Norwood had that title, but he was a probowler when that went down. I know Eddie Murray also remember him shanking a playoff loss for the Lions and he was a probowl caliber kicker too, at least at one point in his career.

instantly soundtracked in my head with PANTS ON THE GROUND

guys, i think it's saints-colts but i'm also tempted to go on a limb and pick saints-JETS. i was the only person who picked the jets last week (i don't post picks on the board so i can't prove this without giving you guys phone numbers of all my friends so just trust me on this).

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 18 January 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

I want Saints-Colts, but then I have wanted a lot of things in the past couple of weeks that haven't happened. This is why we can't have nice things, the San Diego Chargers. THIS IS WHY.

C-L, Monday, 18 January 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

you guys were all so upset about that game! you wouldn't have liked to have been with me and my friends, we all openly decided to hate the chargers and pull for a jets win. sorry guys!

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 18 January 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

i keep trying to spin this jets thing positively -- like, this is nice, they are gonna get screwed for next year because they won't be able to sign FAs and will have low draft spots -- they are tricking their fans into thinking that this is a thing that might last -- they will def be one of the playoff teams that goes 7-9 next year -- but if they make the super bowl i'm going to cry probably

that said... i don't have much in my heart for the chargers or the colts so i'm feeling a bit not up to the challenge of totally rooting for the jets -- i naturally fall towards the underdog anyway

A push by celebrities, athletes and the first lady encouraging text-message donations for earthquake relief in Haiti has contributed to a fund-raising bonanza for the American Red Cross, which a little over a year ago turned to Congress for a bailout.

As of late Sunday, the organization had collected pledges of $103 million, about $22 million of which came through the text-messaging program. The National Football League’s promotion of text-message donations during its weekend playoff games produced stunning results, with money “coming in at the rate of $500,000 an hour,” said Roger Lowe, a Red Cross spokesman.

“I need a better word than ‘unprecedented’ or ‘amazing’ to describe what’s happened with the text-message program,” Mr. Lowe said.

btw championship round sounds too britishes for nfl

bnw, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

the saints/vikes should be a great game. going to be really really interesting to see how the vikes D matches up.

basically, it probably comes down to our defensive line.

the vikes D is basically predicated on getting good pressure from the four down lineman without doing a ton of blitzing schemes. in games where our front four have been shut-down, the defense frankly can look pathetic...when we get good pressure, like in the dallas game for instance or against green bay this year, we can basically make a high powered offense look like shit....

i think this is sort of a trait of the tampa 2 in general, like you give up stuff in the middle to tight ends and slot receivers while not giving away the big gains and shutting down the run....so then you just need like one sack or negative play for a loss to basically kill a drive...

we beat the saints last year but that team wasn't nearly as good as they are playing this year, and their D wasn't nearly as good.

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

and after all the talk about favre some of the real key players for us might be dudes like bennie sapp, jamarca sanford, and tyrell johnson who have been problematic for us in the secondary

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah if vikings d-line plays like they did on sunday, i think they'll beat the saints. cowboys' o-line looked solid all year but go so so sonned on sunday.

After missing three field goals for the Giants in an overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks in 2005, Feely was the subject of a Saturday Night Live sketch. The NFL Films parody, entitled "The Long Ride Home: The Jay Feely Story," featured comedian Dane Cook as Feely on the Giants' five-hour flight home from Seattle, where he is forced to land the plane through two large radio towers that look like field posts.

I was up real early this morning and watched the NFL Matchup on ESPN and Ron Jaworski pretty much called a couple of things on this game. Jaws called the Jets going for a bomb early in their 3rd possession, as they do that nearly every game, he called the Jets trying a pass with Brad Smith and he called the Colts using deep seam routes to break the Jets blitz. Maybe that is really freakin' obvious stuff to any one in the now, but watching the game, color me impressed a bit.

earlnash, Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

It also says something that the Jets can completely take out Wayne and Clark yet the Colts still pile up the passing yards.

SAINTS

i mean, my closest friends live in nova and i am there all the time, but srsly the last time, i was walking home down clarendon blvd and:

#1 couple of douchebags get out of taxi, how do i know they are douchebags, because one dude in ribbed sweater/jeans/spiky hair starts dancing like a fool in the street all LETS PARTY so i'm kind of smirking as i walk by, & he's like HEY BABY WANNA GO DANCE. it was delightful.

#2 crazy man sighted! standing there smoking and talking to himself, grey buzzcut military looking dude with rolling suitcase, last seen @ barnes & noble georgetown yelling like crazy at the staff about some conspiracy in west africa (because the one staffer was a black man apparently thus part of this) and how he wouldn't be treated this way by YOUR ORGANIZATION. i accidentally-on-purpose shoved past him on my way out the door because he was annoying also racist, and of course there he is again.

nova.

Does anyone remember, a long time ago, there was a McDonalds commercial for the McRib sandwich with some Cajun guy, and he was saying things like "guaroonteed" and "chomp!", and then when the Saints played in nationally televised game the announcers started saying "Chomp!" whenever the Saints scored a touchdown. I forget whether that was in the 80's or early 90's.

wow, hard to read this. favre has been great all year, he's playing tough today even with no running game, multiple fumbles from the running backs, and sidney rice being completely shut down. meanwhile brees has all day to throw, the saints O line is winning the game for them.

no shame for the vikings to lose to the saints -- they're great. but sad to see people i like on the internet cheering for favre to get hurt.

Cricket riding a tumbleweed (Plasmon), Monday, 25 January 2010 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

I don't want him put in a wheelchair, I just want him hit hard enough and often enough that he isn't able to pull out a 4Q miracle.

I thought of this earlier, too, when the Vikes got a few yards on one of their own fumbles that squirted forward. It would be a tough thing to make work.

Also, fumbling forward intentionally is not allowed, and the ball returns to the spot of the fumble if the refs decide it was intentional.

been a vikings fan for 30 years, i never cheer for injuries. was at the metrodome when favre broke the TD record (as a packer), gave him a round of applause.

been reading ILX since the beginning, mostly lurking. i've read ILNFL all year, posted only occasionally. you guys are funnier posting hatcat shops than cheering for injuries.

favre is the main reason this game is still close. hope he finishes strong. this is a very entertaining game, even if it's only reinforcing the natural fatalism that all vikings fans are born to.

amazing game. if favre throws to his right to berrian instead of across his body longwell probably wins it. too bad about the cheap DPI call on the winning drive. the vikings D played well enough to get a stop. of course our offense would've just turned the ball right back over anyway.

all credit to the saints. they hung in, made some big plays, didn't beat themselves. they're a complete football team, worthy champions.

Favre's INT didn't lose the game for the Vikings, unless you're wearing schadenfreude-tinted glasses. Maybe if they'd been on the 28 instead of the 38...

The 5 yard penalty for 12 men in the huddle effectively pushed them out of FG range. Reminds me of the 13 men on the field penalty that cost the Saskatchewan Roughriders the Grey Cup this year.

On the INT, Berrian came open to his right but he'd already come off him (the defender probably let him come open because he was reading Favre's eyes. He also could've run for 3-5 yards, which might've been enough. The gimpy ankle probably didn't help at that point -- he's been great rolling out of the pocket all year. Favre's usual mistake in that situation is to throw a deep pass from 3 yards across the line of scrimmage. That also would've effectively ended the drive and the 4Q.

In the end Favre is the main reason the Vikings were in position to win at all, so it's hard to hate him for the mistake. If he does the smart thing and throws it out of bounds we're left with a 57 yard FB, no gimme. With the Vikings' luck a Longwell attempt from 57 yards with 5 seconds left would be blocked and run back the other way for the ballgame.

The Vikings defense played well today, but the stats make them look better than they really were. They didn't get much pressure on Brees until late. They produced zero red zone stops (not including the "touchdown" they gave Pierre Thomas at the 1 yard line) and zero turnovers. One big play might've made the difference. That was the rule for the Vikings D all year -- reasonably competent but rarely a difference-maker.

I hope Favre takes training camp off and comes back next year. He's the best QB I've ever seen play for my favorite team. This was a great year, and the loss today was so entertaining it's hard to remember to be disappointed.

Today my Viking fandom finally reached the ironic, so-bad/unlucky-they're-adorable phase. Should be better for my blood pressure.

Favre's INT didn't lose the game for the Vikings, unless you're wearing schadenfreude-tinted glasses. Maybe if they'd been on the 28 instead of the 38...

He threw away the opportunity to go for a very make-able field goal, in a dome.

I hope Favre takes training camp off and comes back next year. He's the best QB I've ever seen play for my favorite team.

(Tarkenton.jpg)

Right, I remember Tommy Kramer and Wade Wilson but Joe Kapp and Fran Tarkenton were a little before my time. Tarkenton had his own problems winning big games, as far as I've heard.

He threw away the opportunity to go for a very make-able field goal, in a dome.

If Favre had thrown that last pass away, the FG attempt would've been 56 yards, which isn't "very makeable", even for Ryan Longwell kicking in a dome. Favre tried to make something happen and got burned. Hard to blame him for over-reaching, the safe play was no guarantee of success. The Vikings would've been better served not to get conservative with 1st and 10 and the 33 (and not to take the stupidest penalty in football coming off a timeout).

he will have fun on the farm, where there is lots of room for him to run around, don't worry

This is nonsense. The MIN has the last play of regulation in their hands -- a play with <50% chance of success, true, but the possibility of ending the game all the same. If they don't make the FG, then you got to OT, which is still better than throwing an INT and not having the last play.

i don't even know who posted this but lol @ defending this pass in any way.

it should have been a running play!!! vikes had been gashing the saints and their exhausted defense--i think 5 yards on the ground was a gimme and then you kick an fg in a dome with an experienced dome kicker.

but since they retardedly decided to pass it, there is only one thing you cannot do on that pass play--take away your team's chance to score.

This game seems unblowoutable to me. Both of these teams were spotting teams like 17 points all season and then coming back at the end! The 2009 Colts and 2009 Saints cannot be counted out, even though this game is going to be in 2010.

avenge Favre

Ponger12, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:56 (fifteen years ago)

it should have been a running play!!! vikes had been gashing the saints and their exhausted defense--i think 5 yards on the ground was a gimme

They ran twice just before that, for zero yards. They were effectively out of field goal range.

Anyone who wants to do math on the odds of the Vikings winning after Favre throws that pass has to include the not-bad odds that he completes it. He's been rolling out and throwing across his body all year -- and mostly getting away with it. Sidney Rice has got great ball skills, if that pass is delivered half a second earlier he might beat the defender to it. Then Longwell has a cheap shot and everyone starts whining about 2 weeks of nonstop Favrophilia. It was an aggressive play, a split-second decision, and it didn't work. Live by the Favre, die by the Favre.

Ironically, the rollout right is the one thing Tarvaris Jackson is good at. He would've probably kept the ball and bootlegged to the sidelines.

So it goes...

Brett Favre throwing across his body on the run is just one of those Brett Favre things that will sometimes make you very happy and sometimes make you go "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLANT YOUR FEET, YOU ASSHOLE". The fact that he was converting most of them all year was why Packer fans were alternating between "Pfft, give it time, it'll happen" and the insane anger that it wasn't happening nearly as often as it usually does. When he started playing hurt and doing it, it honestly started bringing up weird old bad memories for me. All those years where his thumb was broken or dislocated or whatever, just...nobody should have to go through that, not even the Minnesota Vikings. Maybe Al Davis, though.

C-L, Monday, 25 January 2010 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

it would be really evil (and yet wonderful) if what ESPN really meant is that there was enough anti-Favre Schadenfreude out there so that even if folks expected him to get to the playoffs and/or the super bowl that he would throw yet another of his trademark dumbass INTs. but i think that they were just going for the "favre hasn't thrown as many INTs as he usually does" angle.

my fave part of tonight's broadcast, from an announcer standpoint, was the lengthy argument over the bullshit roughing the passer call in which buck kept repping for the refs and aikman - you might remember him as having actually been an nfl qb - kept telling him that this was nonsense which finally ended by aikman exasperatedly saying, "joe, the fact that we are arguing about this right now probably proves that this might be a ticky tacky call, and it's not clear cut." this was followed by several seconds of silence and then buck moved on to poorly calling the next play.

So wow@that game!!

saints will need to play much better tho or it's going to be a terrible game--i'm already concerned that theyre going to be an upper echelon "we're just happy to be here" team

The thing that I love about Payton is that from what I've seen he's really good at making adjustments, so I expect the offense to come out in full force in Miami. The whole team has been very clear all year that their sights are set on getting a ring and nothing else. I think it's just the fans that have the "we're just happy to be here" attitude. As long as no one gets seriously injured I really won't care so much how the superbowl goes. Words aren't enough to describe just how amazing it feels to know that we're even going to be in it. I totally understand the eye-rolling re:the Superbowl as redemption for Katrina meme that we're going to have to endure for the next two weeks, but this really is an amazing spiritual boost for the city. And even ignoring the Katrina factor, no city's fans deserve it more. Definitely gonna cook up some gumbo for the game.

It's the hardest thing in sports to be a Vikings fan. After the game finally ended, my wife was in her room crying her eyes out. She was 14 when the 98 Vikings destroyed her faith in everything, and she tried so hard to never have any faith we'd win, but she couldn't help it. God, that game hurt so damn badly. The Vikings were clearly the better team, since you take away any 1 of 3 biggest fuck ups, and we easily win the game. That's just the way things always have and always will go for this team and its fans. I don't know if it's worse this way, or to be a terrible team with no hope. Shit, at least the Timberwolves don't cause pain. I can watch them with no fear of emotional ruin.

horseshoe, Monday, 25 January 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

as much as i'd like to blame this on favre, and he certainly shares in the blame for me it's:

1) adrian peterson - his fumble after the reggie bush fumble i think was the most crucial play of the game... i remember texting my friend "this will haunt us" right after that

2) the offensive line - favre was getting killed out there...also we struggle to pick up all the blitzing shit they were doing the whole game

3) childress - the 12 man thing was just inexcusable...fuck.

4) favre - obv though he was really beat up and i think off his game after that high/low hit, but yeah he should have never forced it...apparently longwell was hitting from 60 yards in warmups

Matt, you forgot The Refs. Totally justified complaint, imo.

real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Monday, 25 January 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah there were several questionable calls...most notable for me was leber getting called on a phantom pass interference call in OT...number one i don't think it was interference, number two the ball was uncatchable anyway

also the pierre thomas "TD" where he was clearly down like a yard before the ball crossed the line

i didn't really want to bring up the refs though because frankly you commit that many turnovers on the road in the playoffs, that's why you lost the game, bad calls or not

you forgot what a hardcore blogger is (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 25 January 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't read that much postgame stuff, but did anyone find out which player wasn't supposed to be in the huddle? this prob wasn't childress' fault -- i don't think head coaches control package personnel on the field. i might be wrong but it's more likely that one of the wrs/tes fucked up here, unless the play got in late or w/e and there was scrambling

yeah i found the blog post where florio got that from, but no one they talked to (childress and hutch) said exactly HOW it happened. i'm not clear on how substitutions work in general tbh--i guess the play gets radioed in and assistant coaches tell their guys to go on the field and then either those guys or the qb (who also has the play) would tell other guys to leave the field?

call all destroyer, Monday, 25 January 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

tahi probably wanted to be in there to do his patented "bumble around and get in adrian peterson's way" move...or maybe his other go-to "1 yard screen pass" move

you forgot what a hardcore blogger is (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 25 January 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

my guess is that they wanted a formation without a fullback, and tahi, assuming that they were just going to be running the clock out, ran into the huddle because he had been in most of the drive

maybe i'm wrong about this, but i think the saints' strategy -- which admittedly worked against boys & vikes (kind of) -- of blitz peyton like crazy and try and knock the shit out of him sounds like a kamikaze suicide pact to me. he shreds the blitz so, so well. i feel like the best way to beat him is to (relatively) sit back and try and make him force balls into coverage. i don't think he's the kind of QB that you want making split-second decisions with a bunch of guys in one-on-one coverage.

waka shame (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i was thinking about this and i kind of agree. the only way they're going to stop him is by getting an INT or two and i would think the best way to go about that is by creating confusion with coverage. he did throw a couple more picks this year and i'm wondering if maybe garcon and collie had something to do with that--miscommunications and whatnot.
