― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)
matt jones is so terrible. he really is incredibly stiff when you get him on a football field - you have to just throw out the amazing combine numbers, because he doesn't come close to playing up to them.
also this is such a bengals move that it should be on jordan's unbelievable/believable graph, right next to favre throwing that pick
― yakko warner (cankles), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
if they sign pacman i might have to make an unbelievable/believable just for pacman
― nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)
the thing about the Bengals is they spend zero money on scouting - literally the only team in the league w/o a scouting department iirc - and their strategy in drafts and FA is to target the high-upside, high-risk guys whose value to other teams has plummeted (usually for a good reason). that's why it made so much sense to me when they drafted andre smith, maualuga and michael johnson. they're very easily drawn to 'names' because they can't scout shit, there's no team i can imagine being as seduced by michael johnson's potential as cincinatti was
― yakko warner (cankles), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
i can't wait for derrick morgan to turn into michael johnson part two. i'm just licking my lips.
― nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:01 (fifteen years ago)
canks, why is DE such a boom/bust position? i can't remember the last time a DE drafted in the top 10 ended up being a total hit of a pick.
― nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:02 (fifteen years ago)
people have the jags taking st. louis from usf... and i'm just like how traumatic must that be for jags fans (all four of them)? like, another boom/bust top 10 DE, can't they just sign a FA. it can't be that hard.
― nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)
first, i just wanna point something out about michael johnson:
http://www.raskraska.ru/book/img/giraffe_01.jpghttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/_x2wjz_WMltk/SI8UI8JLjDI/AAAAAAAAAoI/0rkAMHdp-jI/s320/GT+Michael+Johnson+pumping+iron.jpghttp://oncincinnati.com/images/assets/0049/0324/46344_bengals_camp.jpg
i watch a lot of tech football, and i don't think you can really compare the two. MJ was just a guy who 'flashed' every now and then but was mostly just lazy and sucky. morgan has a legit motor and was very consistent throughout his college career. i like him more as a low first-round, high second-round guy but he should at least be a solid starter, which is a lot more than johnson will ever be.

mario williams? :0
i'm still a believer in chris long, but he might be better suited to playing rush backer in a 34. derrick harvey hasnt done anything yet, but i'd still give him another season before i'd think about writing him off
as for why it's so boom/bust... i think the answer to your question probably lies in the fact that, when you look around the league, there don't appear to be many dominant defensive ends. freeney, jared allen, maybe cole, mario williams, (tuck?) then some guys just on the fringe of the dominant category, like schobel and mathis. it's like quarterback, it's tough to find elite talent at the position. i think that's why you see so many of the 34 OLBs putting up big sack numbers these days, there's a lot of built-in advantages to rushing from that position that you don't get as a DE.
― yakko warner (cankles), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)
ha yeah, forgot about mario. he's such a beast... charlie casserly making that pick and actually being right has to be one of the crazier turn of events in nfl draft history. what i don't understand is why a team would still cling to the idea that it's a good idea to pick a derrick harvey/gaines adams type in the top 10. idk.
― nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)
A lot of them get stuck playing in 3-4 defenses, where the Ends wind up being invisible because they're on a three-man line, and the LBs take all the sacks. And my instinct is that 3-4 defenses tend to be weaker against the run because it's easier to get 4 yards up the gut on a three-man line. Of course, when you've got a Ngata-type at NT that changes things, but not many teams do.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)
or jamaal anderson! i know bucs fans who would go on and on about what a bust gaines adams was, but he was a fuckin superstar next to jamaal anderson. i saw games where adams looked really dominant, so he at least FLASHED at times & you knew he had some natural ability. that never happened with jams. from game to game i could always count on him being the same slow, crappy dude who gets washed out against the run and is always a step too late getting to the QB. he's started 44 games for the falcons and has 2.5 sacks to show for it.
― yakko warner (cankles), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)
ngata might be my favorite d-lineman in the league right now... you just don't see many guys who are that powerful and nimble at the same time

hilarious Q&A with ted thompson
http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/82992147.html
Q. You didn't think you could find some sort of veteran who could do better than Colledge?
A. Obviously not.
Q. Who are the young guys that you think can play left tackle?
A. We think T.J. can.
Q. You do?
A. Yeah. And we'll see. He's got some growing to do. Several of our guys have done it. And, like I said, that wasn't the end-all, be-all.
[...]
Q. Do you want Clifton and right tackle Mark Tauscher back next season?
A. Yeah, if it works out for everybody, sure.
Q. Are you actively trying to re-sign any of your unrestricted free agents?
A. We're having conversations with a lot of our guys.
Q. What's the one area you think the Packers need to be better to be at a Super Bowl level?
A. There's probably a lot of areas.
Q. There's got to be one thing that's foremost in your mind.
A. I'm sure there is.
Q. You're not going to tell me, are you?
A. No.
Q. What's the biggest regret you have during your tenure?
A. Oh. (Didn't answer).

The Raiders capped a mystifying day the only way they know how: By giving their long-snapper a second round tender via Fed Ex.
Okay, so Jon Condo is a Pro Bowler. David White of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that Condo will make $1.759 million if he signs the tender, more than three times his previous salary.
This is a rare care of the uncapped year rules helping a player make more money. But it's still crazy that Condo got the same tender as the team's presumptive starting quarterback, and a higher tender than their starting middle linebacker.

Holy shit, there's rumors about the Jets trying to get Asomugha. I feel like the best option vs. Revis and Asomugha and the rest of the Jet Defense would just be to forget about passing to wide receivers and run like the single-wing or something.
― C-L, Thursday, 4 March 2010 05:33 (fifteen years ago)

― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 March 2010 05:44 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i think his rep has fallen a bit -- it's hard to tell tho what playing for the raiders does to people. also he would be getting more help than he did in oakland cuz revis is pretty much out on an island. really it depends on what they'd give up for him -- it would be a pretty good move if they kept important draft picks

― call all destroyer, Friday, 5 March 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)
Seattle has 14 as well? They could grab Marshall and then draft Lefevour (sp?).
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 5 March 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)
everyone seems to think that they're gonna take clausen at 14 -- it's weird cuz everyone is like "oh carroll knows clausen from recruiting him in high school" and all this junk, and they don't seem to mention that he was also coaching against him when clausen couldn't move his team ten yards. the whole thing is weird.
marshall is def a WR who, if his mind is right, can really produce w/o a great qb. i don't think 2010 hasselbeck is much more deficient than 2009 orton.
― HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)
i guess i just thing that a volatile stud wr is a weird use of the 6th pick for a team with serious foundational problems?
― call all destroyer, Friday, 5 March 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)
i just think
Well, if the Rams take Bradford at #1 (which seems more likely every day), Clausen's likely to go before the Seahawks come up at #14. That's why I suggested Dan Lefevour.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 5 March 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)
idk if clausen will go that high -- i think it would be a reach to take him even in the mid-first round... the only teams i could see taking him after the rams are the bills & maybe the jags (all indications are that the browns are gonna give brady quinn a chance)
i def agree with this in theory, but i think you could make an argument that marshall is more valuable since you see what his production has been. as opposed to a rookie.
― HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
oh sure. but don't the hawks need help on both lines? i mean that's what you ought to do with a 6 imo

yeah, no, i think you're right. also they just poured a ton of money into BIG HOOSH last offseason, and it's not exactly like you need two superstar WRs to succeed in the nfl. this just kinda strikes me as a new regime trying to make a splash.

40 mil over 3 years is pretty reasonable for peppers. he made 20 mil+ last year, and vandenbosch just signed a 4 year, 26 mil deal for crissakes. 12 mil a year actually seems a touch under market value to me, for instance the panthers offered him more than that to stay back in 08.

detroit's making some moves, man... gonna have williams, suh/mccoy, vandenbosch on that d-line, burleson is pretty good (i'd say as good as or better than kevin walter, who's getting a lot of attention in the FA market)... they could be well on their way to a five win season. i mean, are they really any worse off than seattle?

Ben Roethlisberger Accused of Sexual Assault
Posted Mar 5th 2010 3:15PM by TMZ Staff
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault by a young woman in Georgia, TMZ has learned.
The alleged incident occurred early this morning at Capital City -- a club in Milledgeville, Georgia.
The alleged victim, who has already been interviewed by police, has been treated and released.
We're told in addition to the alleged victim, witnesses are being interviewed -- and one law enforcement source says they will attempt to interview Roethlisberger.
In addition to the Milledgeville Police Dept, we've learned the Georgia Bureau of Investigations is also investigating.
As we previously reported, Roethlisberger is being sued by a Reno woman, Andrea McNulty, who claims the QB sexually assaulted her in 2008.
UPDATE: We're told Roethlisberger has already been interviewed by police. We're also told no formal charges have been filed at this point.

It's really weird seeing the Bears actually using some of their money to do stuff, the McCaskey's are usually tight as heck with the purse strings and owning the Bears is a pretty lucritive team to have. At least with putting some money towards someone like Peppers instead of a low 1st round pick, you somewhat know what you are getting. Peppers isn't Reggie White, but the guy is pretty good and is something they need.
Bears need some o-lineman pretty bad though, as I think that was their biggest problem on offense last year.

Karlos Dansby expected to sign by Saturday
Karlos Dansby is close to reaching agreement on a contract with the Dolphins and the sides are expected to wrap up negotiations by Saturday morning, a source is telling The Herald's Jeff Darlington.
Dansby, 28, will sign a deal for five years worth $43 million with $22 million of it guaranteed, Darlington is reporting.
Dansby will make $9 million per year over the first three years.
The signing will be Miami's signature free agent move since Bill Parcells & Co. took over the Dolphins in 2008. The only linebackers that will be getting paid more than Dansby in 2010 are DeMarcus Ware and Terrell Suggs and both of them are pass-rushers.

not that i really disagree
i love antrel rolle more than most people because he went to UM, but that's kind of an insane contract if you ask me. i kno the giants had a terrible defensive backfield last year, but i always got the feeling that trel gave up a lot of big plays and sort of covered it up with a few big run backs INTs every year. maybs i'm wrong tho.

so LT is visiting the vikings -- depending on what price they get him at i think it could be a great pick up for them -- he could give them pretty much what they lost with chester taylor in terms of catching the ball out of the backfield/third down RB attributes -- also could give them a short yardage/goalline back if AD's fumbling issues persist/get worse

― Violent (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 25 March 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
First rumbles of McNabb-to-Raiders trade terms emerge
Posted by Mike Florio on March 25, 2010 6:37 PM ETEvery once in a while, we develop a tipster who builds a track record of providing tips that end up being true.
And one of our latest tipsters who has been accurate with past tips (for the most part) has now given us a tip regarding the trade terms that possibly would send Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Raiders.
Per the tip -- uncorroborated but nevertheless intriguing -- McNabb and cornerback Asante Samuel would go to Oakland, and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha would go to Philadelphia.
We don't know whether an offer of this nature has been made. We suspect that the Eagles would, at a minimum, want to replace Samuel with Sheldon Brown.
Anyway, stay tuned. This is all uncorroborated, but we know that our friends in Philly are desperate for information, and that our friends in Oakland are desperate for hope.
― Violent (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 25 March 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)
Why would the Eagles make that trade??
― Mordy, Friday, 26 March 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)
i don't think they will -- they want picks by all indications
― Violent (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)
refuse to believe this will happen.
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 March 2010 05:38 (fifteen years ago)
If that happened and I was McNabb, I would move up to Jake Plummer's ranch in Montana or wherever it is and hide out for a season.

Shaun Rogers arrested with a loaded gun at the airport. Looks like the Browns will be shopping for a nose tackle in '10.
― gelatinous rube (brownie), Thursday, 1 April 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
Oops.
Herm Edwards was just one some riff about McNabb and Marshall both going to the 49ers, which I could 100% behind (mainly because I'm an ass and don't want Al Davis to have another winning season before he croaks).
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 April 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)
You have to be totally lost in the ozone to blow it carrying a loaded gun into an airport.
It's stupid and the sweatpants thing was just hilarious, but at least Plaxico was in a club, which is some place that people do seem to get shot.
― earlnash, Thursday, 1 April 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)
I think the Eagles should take a look at what happened to the Rams after they let Warner go, who did seem closer to done than McNabb. Bulger looked like he could be the guy, but that obviously didn't turn out to be the case.
― earlnash, Thursday, 1 April 2010 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

that's a good question! does this mean i have to change the playbook or what. you think they'll be changing our offense? i gotta get on that. im not sure if they told shanahan that i'm calling the plays. at least, they never told me i wasn't. man, nfl is hard work.
― wears suburban hang-ups on her sleeve like some kind of corporate logo (daria-g), Monday, 5 April 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)
this is very interesting
Adam_Schefter Eagles wanted to do right by McNabb enough so that they agreed to trade him in the division rather than to the Oakland Raiders.
Adam_Schefter At various points, the Raiders expected a deal would get done. It never did. And now the Raiders are back to JaMarcus and Gradkowski.

Adam_Schefter Bottom line: Donovan McNabb preferred not to go Raiders and handpicked Redskins, Andy Reid said Eagles wanted to make McNabb happy.6 minutes ago via UberTwitter
― jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)
@Adam_Schefter Here's an intriguing question for the night: With Donovan McNabb in Washington, where does Jimmy Clausen now go in the draft?
I'm betting on Cleveland.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 April 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)
hey donovan, we wanna make you happy! what's that? you want to start in philly for the next five years? you want to restructure your contract to make $35 million dollars a year? hey, sure! we just want to make you happy!
― jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)
clausen is gonna fall, cleveland is gonna take a defensive player
Yeah, or that.
The more I think about this McNabb trade, the weirder it gets. Philly just giftwrapped their offense for Shanahan and the Skins to pick apart this season.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 April 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)
haven't read any of the coverage, but it seems to me this means the eagles have zero confidence in mcnabb.
otherwise, why trade him to a division rival who will get to play you twice, possibly in crucial games?
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 5 April 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)
wow eagles are gonna look like geniuses or tards in a year. or maybe both teams will blow.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 5 April 2010 05:37 (fifteen years ago)
making mcnabb happy is great and all, but if dude was good enough to be yr starting qb forever why the hell are you trading him in the division.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 5 April 2010 05:38 (fifteen years ago)
eagles might suck next year -- so many young ass dudes -- but they're gonna be sick in 2-3 years

Just got home from heavy drinking to discover this. One word: WWWWWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFF??????????
― Mordy, Monday, 5 April 2010 05:40 (fifteen years ago)
My theory is that the Eagles think this will actually sidetrack the Redskins in a way. If it keeps the Skins from rebuilding and instead puts them in the mindset of trying to build a short-term fix around McNabb, sorta like the SF Giants did with Barry Bonds.
It's not like Minnesota, where the Vikings were a quarterback away from being a contender. Jason Campbell isn't the answer, but there are a lot of not-the-answers on that team, and now they have a big quarterback contract plus two fewer picks. I predict they won't win a playoff game in McNabb's tenure.
― no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Monday, 5 April 2010 06:55 (fifteen years ago)
i'm not sure if the eagles are intentionally trying to screw the redskins, but i definitely do agree that they could use a wisely chosen second round pick more than donovan
but in the short term this does give them an opportunity to shed themselves of campbell, bring some energy to the fanbase and gives them a bit of a stay of execution of sorts if they want to pick a qb in the 11 or 12 draft (when the QBs will be far, far better than this year's crop, since they weren't gonna get bradford anyway)
― jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 06:57 (fifteen years ago)

p. interesting the theory coming out that iggles were at least partially motivated here by keeping bradford off the skins
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 8 April 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)
They're already in a division with Romo and Eli, and now they've got Kolb starting. I don't see Bradford as that much of an immediate thread, tbh. He's got some adjusting to do in the NFL that Sanchez and Ryan didn't have to do as much of. If that's the real reason, it's a ridiculous one. If it's not, it's a ridiculous rumor to spread.

honestly, if you're the 49ers or the seahawks and you can trade for ben and still retain one of your first round picks, i don't see how you don't do that -- that team could go 3-3 in its first 6 games (maybe less depending on bye week) and still potentially win that division by finishing 7-3

I don't really care about him. He's an interesting player and I hope some NFL team figures out a way to use him creatively. But I def don't have any hate for him. Who cares?
― Mordy, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:50 (fifteen years ago)
I don't really hate tebow, I'm sorta a passive UF fan even
― iatee, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)
I mean I hate the god stuff, but he's fun to watch

I think it's weird to be a sports fan and not understand the idea of arbitrarily hating players tho...that's basically what sports is all about
― iatee, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)
he just annoys me because i don't really follow college football at all so i fail to see what the big deal is--he was a system quarterback in a stacked school with demonstrably bad pro mechanics, so why exactly am i supposed to get excited about him?
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)
iatee otm, no idea where mordy is coming from here
― artie flange (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)
i just think he's a weird bogeyman for you guys to hate. i have a fanatic canes fan friend, so i totally understand his hatred, but for anyone else, i don't really see anything particularly reprehensible. i'd save hatred for rapethlisberger, or even like vick. it could be i just missed all the assholeness of tebow, but i haven't heard anything about him that would really raise my ire that much.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think anyone here actually hates him though...
― iatee, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)
also, he's a really exciting player and really fun to watch play
― Mordy, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)
(i guess the Focus on Family commercial was pretty hate-worthy)
― Mordy, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)
he's just really easy to make fun of. what is confusing about this?
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)
i've read shit like "grown men cry when they see him"
i don't hate him btw
sorta sounds like you have a thing for tebow more than anyone here has a not-thing for him
― iatee, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
he's pretty lame as a human
― artie flange (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
tbh I do sorta wish he had been aborted, but other than that he's awesome
― iatee, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)
It seems like people like Kurt Warner and yet he is arguably Christ-ier than Tebow even.

florio reports that steve smith thinks clausen is a punk. smith responds!
"I never talked to him personally, I don't even consider him to be part of the media. There's a reason I have a few more zeros at the end of my contract than he do; and now he says 'we stand by our story' well, you know what, O.J. stood by the 'if the glove don't fit' look where he at."
