this is honestly all i think about all day

here is something weird

BFeldmanESPN RT @gamecocksblog No sign of South Carolina freshman All-American WR Alshon Jeffery at first spring practice. That's never good.

HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:15 (fifteen years ago)

I am more excited about the prospect of usc (the other one...) fucking up than my own team doing well. kiffin is neo-charlie weis.

Yeah, week 2 is going to be so much fun. I can barely wait for it.

usc has a losing season, calling it here and now

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 March 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

they could lose to notre dame

iatee, Friday, 5 March 2010 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

Erik Kuselias and I quote, "Speaking of Notre Dame, you know if you find that group of guys there's always that one bachelor, donuts for dinner, dates a different model, goes on golf vacations, doesn't have to ask anybody, in college football that's Notre Dame"

johnny crunch, Saturday, 15 May 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think miami will have a losing season, but our non-conference schedule is tough.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 15 May 2010 01:53 (fifteen years ago)

it's gonna be a really fun season

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

btw everyone was saying that last year

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

ohio state is overrated & pittsburgh is coached by dave wannstedt -- ohio st played 1 good game last year (oregon) and the list of teams being overrated/underrated due to bowl performance is a very, very long list -- we didn't play well on the road last year but we can undoubtedly beat ohio state -- we aren't historically good against running quarterbacks but our defense is going to be really, really good (our defense line is srsly sick) -- we'll see about the offense but i'm less concerned about that than a lot of people are -- we might be one year behind the teams of the early decade but i genuinely believe that this team is almost as talented as those old teams

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

boise @ va tech is gonna be a hot game

johnny crunch, Saturday, 15 May 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

that game is highly dope

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

really wonder what it's gonna mean for boise if they lose tho

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

we can undoubtedly beat ohio state

hope you're right; think you're wrong

we might be one year behind the teams of the early decade but i genuinely believe that this team is almost as talented as those old teams

lol. you must have had too many champagne mimosas for your birthday, and it's clouded your thinking.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 15 May 2010 09:11 (fifteen years ago)

i'm for real

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

there isn't anyone as good as, say, andre johnson, but the talent on this team runs sooo deep

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

i'd like to point out that i'm always right about collge football and ohio state really is mad overhyped

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

that's the same team that put up 318 total yards against michigan -- i don't believe u, u need more people

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

the game that most concerns me is any game after we win, bcuz last year's team was not at all good at handling success -- if we actually beat osu i might not even watch the pitt game -- same for clemson if we beat pitt

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

i'd like to point out that i'm always right about collge football

did you correctly predict the hurricanes over the cornhuskers in the 1983 championship game?

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

from beyond the womb

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

yes but did you get the "over/under," as well?

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 15 May 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andy_staples/05/17/lyons-questionnaire/index.html

this is pretty rad

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

dude's got a rhodes in his future

it looks like cal hasn't offered him, so I hope he goes w/ stanford or michigan for non-football reasons

iatee, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

how many times can i rep usc this season before i get sb'd?

a bold plan drawn up by assholes to screw morons (ytth), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

should prolly wait til kiffin works his magic before you start worrying about that

iatee, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

and by works his magic I mean loses 5 games and then gets hired as the head coach for the 49ers w/ a record salary

iatee, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

if that happened, much as i love USC, i would think it was hilarious. (the 49ers part, not the 5 losses part.)

a bold plan drawn up by assholes to screw morons (ytth), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

is ncaa ever gonna get around to busting usc for the reggie bush stuff or is that never going to happen?

mayor jingleberries, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

apparently there's gonna be news about that soon (tomorrow?)

iatee, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

"Rodriguez and his staff are not rogues, renegades or cheaters," his response said. "Yes, there were violations. But they were not done deliberately or knowingly. Rather, they were inadvertent and in many cases isolated."

We screwed up a lot but we spread it out -- once a day, sometimes twice a day, but never twice in the same hour.

Third person alert:

His overall statement of defense:

“Coach Rodriguez is surprised and disappointed that violations occurred in his program. He has strived throughout his career to follow the rules. Rodriguez recognizes that as a head coach, he has a heightened responsibility to monitor his program and promote an atmosphere of compliance. Rodriguez embraces that responsibility. He regrets that he did not adequately monitor certain aspects of his program in this case. Rodriguez has learned from his mistakes and will be a better coach and compliance leader going forward.

“However, ensuring compliance with complex NCAA bylaws is not a one-man job. It requires a diligent commitment from everyone with responsibility for compliance oversight. It also requires clear and open lines of communication. In this case, there was not adequate compliance oversight nor open communication concerning important compliance matters.

“Every activity that resulted in a violation in this case was done openly, transparently and under the watch of not only Rodriguez, but also other Michigan coaches and administrators. Violations went undetected because several Michigan staff members, including Rodriguez, were not paying close enough attention. In short, there was a collective failure that resulted in the violations in this case. That is not to deflect blame away from Rodriguez, it is simply stating a fact and putting Rodriguez’s culpability in the proper context.”

Andy K, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

Thank fucking Jeebus Rodriguez didn't come to Alabama. *phew*

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

i know that charlie weis is no longer the coach, but i think notre dame should have to win 10 games before we have to sit through this off season routine where everyone goes "hey! their schedule isn't that great! can't they win 10 games and have an outside shot at the national title?! what sleepers!"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

I miss charlie weis

iatee, Wednesday, 26 May 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

so, uh...pac16? big16? feels like one of those pointless corporate mergers, though I guess this stuff actually makes more sense than that financially. I'd rather cal doesn't play 5 texas teams a year.

iatee, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

I'm kind of looking forward to the day when there are four giant regional conferences of 16 teams each. Will definitely make playoffs easier (but sorry, little schools).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

i'm gonna post about this soon

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)

not like it's gonna be a mind bending post or w/e but i'm feeling lazy atm but i do have an opinion 4 u

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)

2 conferences
4 divisions each
32 teams

all overseen by lou holtz

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

BFeldmanESPN USC has been hit with a two-year post-season ban in addition to the loss of scholarships, among other penalties from the NCAA.

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

that is horrible news. i guess we won't have to worry about usc being good again this decade... let the transfers begin.

dad, i wanna be a lothario speedwagon (ytth), Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, really wonder what the max exodus is gonna be like

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, usc was obv. guilty so now i can get all uppity and compare what they did vs. what alabama did to get the same sanctions, or i can just be mad at college football for being dumb and punishing people who were in 7th grade at the time of the violations because that's all they can do. as a fan, it sucks... a one-year postseason ban would have been one thing, but i really do think this will cripple the program to near washington-state levels.

dad, i wanna be a lothario speedwagon (ytth), Thursday, 10 June 2010 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

this won't cripple the program more than kiffin will

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 11:43 (fifteen years ago)

^ quality post.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)

it's gonna be a long, long time til usc wins a bigpac32 championship

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

I was kinda expecting to feel more schadenfreude about the whole USC thing, but honestly I am more happy that Colorado is apparently definitely in the Pac-10, and Texas is likely to follow. I was kind of worried the Pac-16 was gonna get stuck with Baylor.

C-L, Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

scholarship losses are going to fuck them more than anything

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

devil's advocate here: maybe what USC actually needs right now is someone who is better at recruiting their ass off than actually coaching? even tho winning actual games is obv tied up in recruiting, you probably need a guy right now that's an amazing salesman (& a guy who can develop players etc etc). maybe not, idk.

gonjasufi smacker (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I mean these next 2 years esp when you gotta work w/ a tainted brand.

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

I guess this explains why Kiffin got the job, fwiw.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

Orgeron too. That guy is apparently a recruiting monster (I mean, why else would anyone have played at Ole Miss?).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

recruiting is so weird, I never get how these hs kids' minds work

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Not that it's anything more than conjecture at this point, but -if- the SEC were to expand, I'd love to bring in Florida State and Clemson (both of which I'm sure are just waiting for the invitation, especially now that Jimbo Fisher is at the helm in Tallahassee). The other thing is the Texas schools. I think A&M would rather go south, but the Longhorns might rather go west, but they both know they have to travel together. I'd welcome them both, but be sad if it meant a Texas/Alabama game every single season. RISKY!

Ideally, I'd love for Georgia Tech to stop it already with the sour grapes and come back to the SEC, but I'm pretty sure that will never ever happen in a zillion years.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

there is no room for the sec in the bigpac32

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

So it's going down right now. Colorado just announced their move.

If this plays out as predicted, it's conceivable that Oklahoma and Nebraska could meet in the Rose Bowl Game every other year or so. HA! That's bizarre.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

@AaronRodgers12: Looking forward to getting my PAC-10 championship ring from the ‘04 season.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

YES

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

love it

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

Auburn might get the nat'l title too, yes?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

If the Pac-10 goes to 16 teams, I'd like to listen in on the meetings when they tell Arizona they're being put in the Pac-16 East with Texas et al.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

If this plays out as predicted, it's conceivable that Oklahoma and Nebraska could meet in the Rose Bowl Game every other year or so. HA! That's bizarre.

yeah I mean this can be considered a step towards a playoff in the sense that it gets rid of the 'we must keep the rose bowl sacred' argument.

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

so, chance that pc's career decision had nothing to do with sanctions has dropped to what... less than 0%?

iatee, Thursday, 10 June 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

boise state to mountain west

iatee, Friday, 11 June 2010 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

So I guess the WAC can finally officially rename themselves THE WACK, right?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

actually in a weird way I think it might be good for them in the long-term - or, I guess it's 'not entirely bad'

iatee, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

I mean yeah it sucks to lose what has become a consistently good football team, but now other WAC-y teams get a chance in their own conference?

iatee, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, it definitely levels the field now in terms of competitiveness.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 June 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

i LOVE Nebraska to the Big Ten, just love it!!! Gives Big Blue a chance to kick their ass continually over the bullshit "split" championship. And keep it right there, 12 teams is perfect, it solves the 11 imbalance since Penn State.

if they really REALLY wanna keep going, and make conferences or whatever, then it's Missouri and Syracuse to make 14 and nobody else

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 12 June 2010 07:02 (fifteen years ago)

Missouri is the stepchild with attitude problems that no one wants. I heard that even if the Big XII didn't crumble, they were going to kick out Missouri anyway.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 June 2010 07:19 (fifteen years ago)

I love Missouri. feisty, always somewhat competitive school (when they are not freakingly right in there for the National Championship), I like their competitiveness in the last decade or so, they have been great. So, BRING THEM IN :)

it makes total sense ... MAP-WISE ... then the 'Big-Ten' really does OWN the Midwest/Great-Plains

But, with just Missouri, it is unbalanced again, with 13 teams. That's why I say --- go for SYRACUSE next!!! holy crap, that would be awesome, especially when you think about the Basketball implications over the Football implications

plus if they did that -- Nebraska, Syracuse, Missouri -- you would create this 14 team conference that would create a MASSIVE oil-spill like splotch across the entire Midwest and Great Lakes ... It looks like a BEAUTIFUL conference to me in theory.

The SEC would shudder in its boots :)

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 12 June 2010 09:20 (fifteen years ago)

[the whole preceding post was already pricing in Nebraska, just to make sure everyone is on the same page]

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 12 June 2010 09:22 (fifteen years ago)

so can someone explain to the layman why all these conference switches are happening all of a sudden?

call all destroyer, Saturday, 12 June 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

$ thing - bowls, tv rights (/possibility of own tv channel)

'all of a sudden' - a scramble started up for the choice schools...I know the pac10 has had its eye on colorado for a long time

iatee, Saturday, 12 June 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

All of this conference shuffling has me actually excited for the college season for the first time in awhile.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

Nothing really happens until 2012, though.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

this year and schedules and shit must already be set, yeah? or is shit changing season? thatd be really crazy xp

johnny crunch, Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

Oh. :(

Well at least USC is fucked.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 12 June 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

yeah tbh even if cal doesn't win a single game this season, watching usc is gonna be so worth it

iatee, Saturday, 12 June 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

it looks like a *lot* is up in the air w/ the conference shuffle?

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

this supposed $17m a year payout to a ten team big 12 makes pretty much no sense, if you ask me

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

like, schools are supposedly fleeing the big 12 because more money could be made elsewhere, and now all of a sudden the big 12 minus nebraska would be as profitable as the sec? idk

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

desperation move for sure

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

however, I'm not gonna overrate the intelligence of people in charge of any of these schools

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

it just doesn't make any sense -- i'm sure abc & espn execs are sitting in their offices right now like "wtf"

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

kind of lol but mostly sad how nobody gives a shit about the other sports this is gonna affect

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

tru

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

well pretty much basketball cuz no one pays attention until the tourney -- no one pays attention to the other sports anyway

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

also kinda funny how texas is totally at the center of this - they could save the big 12 or make 1 of 3 other conferences very happy - but they are gonna be in a great position (money + the players) no matter *what* happens. if I were UT I'd prolly stay put and continue the "if we beat oklahoma and a bunch of so-so teams, we go to the national championship game" strategy. money isn't everything.

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

This frees them up to continue developing LONGHORN TV, as well.

But surely the Big Ten will finally have to change their name, right? Eleven teams sort of provided an excuse to keep the old name, but now they have twelve. And now the Big 12 will have ten. Name swap?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

well, the game's not over yet and the big 12 might be more like the big 6 or the big 3 or the big 0. though it would be hilariously confusing if the two switched names.

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

I don't see their potential Pac-10 competition being any tougher than the Big 12.

Pure speculation on my part, but they'd likely be in the Pac 10 east with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Utah/Texas A&M, Colorado, Texas Tech, Arizona, and Arizona State.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

Well at least USC is fucked.

will be v. happy to see usc go through what my team went through.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 June 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

And my team.

(Daniel, I know you hate Bama for a variety of reasons, but solidarity in disgrace!!!)

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

right, and in that scenario they'd be playing the schedule they already play + a harder championship game. pac 10 west is gonna field at least one legit challenger a year.

xp

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

and hell that's a harder schedule than they have right now

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

if the big 12 stays at 10 teams they'll obviously have to split up texas & oklahoma for there to be any sort of divisional balance, and that obv hurts both teams, as one can overcome a loss to the other when it happens early in the season (i.e. 2008) but def not when it happens in a potential conference title game

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

the big 10 will never change their name just cuz the big 10 is the big 10 is the big 10 -- bad "branding" or w/e

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

Jeremiah Masoli probably didn't singlehandedly sink Oregon's chances in 2010, but his fall from grace didn't help matters any. :(

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

nah, he pretty much singlehandedly sunk their chances

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

they were a bit overrated anyhow -- last year they got trounced by boise & stanford, lost to ohio st (who wasn't that good to begin with) & "made" their season by beating a usc team that was barely one of the 25 best in the country

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but if anything, their 2010 Pac-10 competition would've been more of a pushover than last year. Now I guess it's Washington? Cal?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

god masoli is such an idiot

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

cal should be decent

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

they'll still probably win the pac 10 -- maybe oregon st? altho they're replacing their qb

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

it would be hilarious if oregon st won the pac 10, ohio st went to the nat'l title game, and the big 10 rep to the rose bowl was wisconsin

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

hilarious because the rose bowl people are massive dickbags

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

pac10 is gonna be really up in the air this year

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

tbh, I wouldn't hate to see Iowa in the Rose Bowl Game.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

Stanford is probably the team to beat this year if Luck is as good as people think he is.

truth

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)

that would be depressing

I can imagine the eventual champion having 2 conference losses

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe instead of courting Notre Dame, but Big Ten could go after the Detroit Lions. SUH VS. HUSKERS.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

ESPN says they're likely to stay now.

I don't know what to believe!

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Monday, 14 June 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

if texas stays, possible that nothing else at all happens?

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

maybe utah to pac 10

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

If Texas stays, no one else moves (not even A&M to the SEC). Utah is pretty likely to go Pac-10, though.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

Honestly I think the Pac 10 plus Utah and Colorado makes a lot of sense. Two good programs who make sense for the region, whereas Texas would be weird to me.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Monday, 14 June 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

tbh, I would be happy with giving Arkansas back to the Big 12 if they want them. And South Carolina can go to hell somewhere too.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

hell vs. the acc

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

i still wouldn't be shocked to see the SEC make a move for 2 more teams

Youve Beenexposed (J0rdan S.), Monday, 14 June 2010 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

florida state and miami would be logical (more than a&m...)

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'd love it, specifically because all the rowdy Gator fans around me on a daily basis would get all *sadface* over their reduced recruiting dominance.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Fortunately, the SEC only requires 9 of 12 schools to approve new members instead of unanimous consent.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

would be hard to argue w/ that being the 'strongest conference' = could possibly lead to other dominoes falling?

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

looks like:
a. pac16 ain't gonna happen
b. it's espn's fault

iatee, Monday, 14 June 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

(Daniel, I know you hate Bama for a variety of reasons, but solidarity in disgrace!!!)

lol, yeah.

BTW J0RDAN S. SAYS WE'RE GOING TO BE DYNAMITE THIS YEAR SO I AM OPTIMISTIC.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 June 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

SO I EXPECT A 11-WIN SEASON. NO EXCUSES.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 June 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)

Now it's officially official. Texas, TAMU and Oklahoma all declined offers to join the Pac-10, and no one is moving now if they don't move.

So I guess we get a Pac-12 with Colorado and (in all likelihood) Utah being the new additions.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 23:39 (fifteen years ago)

colorado and utah? wow that's like a superconference.

two months pass...

Vanderbilt interim coach Robbie Caldwell has had tougher jobs than the one he took over when Bobby Johnson abruptly retired last month. Caldwell's first job, at a turkey farm in Pageland, S.C., certainly wasn't glamorous. "I don't know if I could tell you what my job was, but I was on the inseminating crew," Caldwell said. "That's a fact. I worked my way to the top."

I know Oregon's competition today was so much shit, but I'm predicting they win the PAC 10 now.
Happy that Michigan isn't a slouch anymore, but hate Rodriguez. I'm conflicted, yet I still hope they keep Ohio State out of championship consideration (if Miami doesn't do it first). Best situation of all? Iowa beats them both.
Fuck the Big East, who cares.
Was hoping for an LSU loss in addition to Ole Miss. Bama's probably still safe in the west, though. As for the SEC east...who the fuck knows. Georgia sure looked a lot better today than Florida.
Big 12: would've been hilarious if Oklahoma dropped one today. I still think Texas comes out on top.
ACC: I'm supporting Miami until they give me a reason not to, but I really do like Jimbo Fisher and want FSU to do well.

I live in the heart of Razorback Country, and I haven't been to a game in eight years. Why would you have to go to Tuscaloosa? They've got TVs in the District now, don't they?

I don't think being an SEC fan is a good idea

iatee, Thursday, 9 September 2010 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

Unless these people are like REALLY hardcore from the swamps and forests of the south, they'll more than likely be okay with you just saying you appreciate the SEC for what it is: the strongest conference in college football. You don't have to pick a favorite team (and I tell you this as an Alabama fan since birth).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 September 2010 04:53 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, and one other thing: if these ARE indeed Alabama fans you're working with, just tell them you hate the Vols. That will endear you with them much more than picking a team to like.

wears suburban hang-ups on her sleeve like some kind of corporate logo (daria-g), Thursday, 9 September 2010 05:46 (fourteen years ago)

I've never been a tailgater type, but I understand the appeal of the idea. I even understand the compulsion to travel to participate in such a thing. It is SO MUCH more intense than anything the NFL has to offer. Even cities who worship their teams like Green Bay and Oakland have nothing that compares to a Saturday morning at any SEC school before a football game.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 September 2010 05:50 (fourteen years ago)

It is crazy and most fans know this.

Green Bay's crazy with its season tickets, but it's a routine thing for people here to donate thousands to the Razorback Foundation just so they can get a seat between the 40s instead of the 30s.

I personally don't get it, but like Lent fasters and people who release their own 8-tracks, I respect it.

Cool, are you on offense or defense?

Donovan Dagnabbit (WmC), Saturday, 11 September 2010 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

both, in a strange way. X sues Y (us) and Z. Y cross-claims against Z, and argues that a win against Z crosses-over, under federal law, into a win against Y. the court granted us summary-judgment against Z, and agreed that this crossed-over into a summary-judgment over X.

there shouldn't be a trial, from our point of view. but Z is refusing to relent. we find out on monday if there's a trial on tuesday.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 11 September 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago)

waka flocka flame judi dench (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 3 October 2010 03:24 (fourteen years ago)

the problem is that i think ohio state can beat them

it's just really hard to repeat as nat'l champs -- as good as this alabama team looks, they're at best just as good as the 02 miami team & the 05 usc team -- they're probably better than last year's UF team

waka flocka flame judi dench (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 3 October 2010 03:26 (fourteen years ago)

Wait, did I just hear Musberger correctly? Washington came back and won?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 October 2010 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

the thing about ohio state is that their offense can get really anemic at times (see: today) & pryor is.... inconsistent, at best, as a passer, but they don't make mistakes, are solid & big on defense, can run the ball & pryor extends soooo many drives with his legs

ohio st would certainly be an underdog, and maybe a sizeable one even if they won out, but my point is that it's really, really tough to repeat and ohio st could beat bama probably 4 out of 10 times, and they may catch one of those four

waka flocka flame judi dench (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 3 October 2010 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

i can't decide whether i'm more depressed by alabama or osu being as good as they are.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 3 October 2010 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

yeah usc doinked a field goal that would've put them up four & then washington drove down & kicked a FG as time expired

waka flocka flame judi dench (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 3 October 2010 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

i actually find this alabama team to be incredibly likeable & the whole miami-bama is before my time so that doesn't weigh on me -- as for saban, the dolphins turned out just fine, not to mention that i've never seen a more hilariously jilted fanbase than the dolphins immediately post-dolphins, which drove me towards saban for some reason

as for ohio state, they've never been likeable -- pryor is swagged out but that team is thoroughly uninspiring

yeah that team is beyond terrible -- truly an inexcusable loss

waka flocka flame judi dench (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 3 October 2010 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

as a usc fan, this year is about noticing the little things, like a 5th yr senior having a career day at rb amid an annoying loss, or matt barkley doing some good stuff, instead of about worrying if usc is going to inexplicably cough up a loss in a game against an unranked opponent like they did in 2007-9 (and multiple times during 2010). when i say "this year," feel free to substitute "the next 6 years." but living in the bay area, beating cal is important. my coworkers still talk shit about cal beating usc in 2004, so i can imagine what i'm in for if cal wins this year. i'm hoping they have a lot of momentum going into the game and are ranked, because that pretty much guarantees a loss.

in a panini or crostini (ytth), Sunday, 3 October 2010 06:02 (fourteen years ago)

analysts can write off the fact that they've given up like 580 yards in each of the last two games but have been bailed out by tons of turnovers as the defense being "opportunistic" or whatever but in reality it just means that they've been really, really lucky -- eventually they're gonna lose a game 48-42

You guys know I'm a Bama fan, but I'm right there with you today. The team that took the field today deserved to lose. Bad bad bad on both sides of the ball. I think fucking Mark Barron accounted for all the tackles and pass defense in the whole second half. If it weren't for him, SC would've won with something like 60-21.

I knew all week long this would be a trap game. Blech.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 10 October 2010 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

there are football fans like that everywhere. after the miami herald ran a long piece on UM's rise academically, the first reader comment was something like "who cares if we're a good or a bad school? i'll take a bad school and a good football team. that's what makes UM great." dumbass.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 10 October 2010 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 October 2010 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's hilarious that everyone is calling for steve addazio's head... which, granted, fair enough, but it's urban meyer's offense. he's not a defensive guy. he's not calling the plays, but he's overseeing that shit. he is very much to blame for this fiasco.

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 17 October 2010 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

well it'd be hard to be a florida fan who called for urban meyer's head

iatee, Sunday, 17 October 2010 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

people need someone to blame but among fans he's still got the nat'l champ godlike aura for...a few years

iatee, Sunday, 17 October 2010 02:35 (fourteen years ago)

Chris Leak had a great team around him (including stunt plays with freshman Tebow), but all of Urban's success after that has been tied to Tebow. Now he doesn't have anything, and he's obviously struggling to make anything work.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 17 October 2010 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

iatee, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:17 (fourteen years ago)

I occasionally listen to the local Lexington sports show, which is hard to do as all they ever talk about is UK basketball or horse racing, but every caller was believing they were going to beat South Carolina. By odds, this seemed nuts to me, as the 'old ball coach' was like 17-0 against them and they hadn't beat South Carolina in a near decade. Hard to believe UK actually won.

UK have a good offense...defense is not so much.

I think Randall Cobb could be a playmaker in the pros.

earlnash, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:18 (fourteen years ago)

Urban Meyer is a good coach, but there is also a heck of a lot of hype. Like Roy Williams when he went into NC on basketball, he really benefited and won pretty much on a cupboard already stocked with good players. Those dudes got quick success pretty much on the recruits of guys that got run out on a rail. They have kept it going, but Meyer was overdue for a down season

earlnash, Monday, 18 October 2010 02:23 (fourteen years ago)

here is a way in which the BCS would be actively dismantled in short order by the conference commissioners: if boise st makes the nat'l title over an undefeated big 10 or SEC team -- this year we're looking at michigan st & auburn/lsu -- and then wins the nat'l title, then they'll probably bring the house down

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Monday, 18 October 2010 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

theres no way boise would finish above an undefeated sec team. i guess mich st maybe

johnny crunch, Monday, 18 October 2010 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, also auburn has already been locked out, and that didn't change anything

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Monday, 18 October 2010 03:06 (fourteen years ago)

I think part of it was that in the auburn year it appeared like there were two teams that were def the two best teams, and undefeated auburn wasn't one of them.

iatee, Monday, 18 October 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

even tho, in retrospect, it prob was...

iatee, Monday, 18 October 2010 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

auburn's had two undefeated seasons in the past fifteen years and no national championships or appearances in national championship games to show for it. over that span lsu and florida have four national championships and no undefeated seasons.

balls, Monday, 18 October 2010 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

however auburn isn't going undefeated this season. and boise isn't playing in the national championship game.

balls, Monday, 18 October 2010 03:41 (fourteen years ago)

How do you deal with a friend who's an alumnus of a Conference USA school, cheers on her mediocre team obsessively, takes swipes at the BCS at every opportunity, and turns up her nose at watching games consisting only of automatic qualifying schools?

That's like the football hipster equivalent, right?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 03:57 (fourteen years ago)

the difference between being some hipster w/ music or food or something and football is that the SEC has objectively better football teams than Conference USA

iatee, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 04:00 (fourteen years ago)

I mean it's not like you can be like "oh man you gotta check out this cool team I just discovered" - like, these teams are composed of the players that couldn't get on better teams.

iatee, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 04:02 (fourteen years ago)

Ok, BCS update: I am VERY surprised Auburn leapfrogged both Oregon and Boise State. I know they beat #6 LSU, but still.

honestly tho, in season rankings are pretty pointless -- like, auburn for instance is gonna have to beat alabama and then the sec east winner to make the nat'l title, regardless if they're ranked #1 now or #5

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 October 2010 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

LSU's #6 ranking last week was terribly inflated, though. I'm an SEC stan, but even I knew that team was winning games by accident.

Go ahead pres. Gee leave Boise out of the BCS national championship game, as that would probably setup the lawsuit that would finally blow out all of the BCS BS.

They really need to take away the tax non-profit status of all of those big football programs anyway. That's the best business scam for making money without paying taxes this side of a church. Ohio State football or LSU football or Alabama football etc. is pro sports in that everybody gets paid big but the players.

It will probably end up with Auburn winning it all and then having that elusive national title stripped as they finally find the smoking gun on this whole issue with Newton. Hasn't Auburn had like two undefeated teams not even had a shot at a national title or get screwed in the voting already?

earlnash, Saturday, 27 November 2010 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, the 1993 team was undefeated but was shut out due to probation and 2004 was when they got screwed by the BCS.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 27 November 2010 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

auburn is not gonna win the nat'l title -- you can't win w/ a defense that poor

J0rdan S., Saturday, 27 November 2010 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

via Wikipedia "In 2008, Sports Illustrated re-entered the 2004 statistics into the BCS system, out of curiosity, to see the outcome. The re-entered version had Auburn at #2, leaving the Sooners out of the title match at #3."

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 27 November 2010 04:39 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, if it's Ducks vs Tigers, you'll see them get burned (kind of like the first half of the Iron Bowl, except for a whole game).

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 27 November 2010 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

first game i can ever remember where boise is getting manhandled physically -- they just look kinda worn down atm

J0rdan S., Saturday, 27 November 2010 05:59 (fourteen years ago)

I don't doubt that logic says that you can't win with that poor a defense, but Auburn has made it through the SEC (even in an off year) at 11-0 with South Carolina, Oregon or Boise State to go. Without clubs really playing anyone decent outside their conference, I can't tell really how good any of these clubs really might be.

It's not like Oregon has a win under against say Iowa or Arkansas on their docket to be able to compare. They might be great, but it is a total subjective choice. PAC10 did pretty cruddy in bowls last year, right? Is the PAC10 really better this year? I know the SEC is down a bit, but there are still a slew of NFL players in that league. I could see the Auburn/Oregon game turning into a psycho track meet like what happened when they played Arkansas.

Criminy, I'd like to know how the last couple of Kentucky teams would have done if they played in say the Big East or ACC or Big Ten in football. I'd bet a buck they would be better than 7-5.

I just can't tell based on what is played, as no one plays very many good teams outside their conference anymore.

earlnash, Saturday, 27 November 2010 06:10 (fourteen years ago)

no surprise at all.

i keep hearing that um can't/won't pay for a top-notch coach or top-notch facilities, both of which are dragging the program down. no idea if that's true.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

Brad Childress is available, just sayin.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:32 (fourteen years ago)

UM's donor base -- as a private school with barely over 10k enrollment a year -- is incredibly small compared to pretty much every other big time college program

miami can offer some intriguing things (nice weather, tradition, great support from ex-players, pipeline in arguably the most fertile recruiting county in america) but money, facilities and fans are not any of those things

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

the names i'm hearing: dan mullen, randy edsall (sorry j crunch), mark richt and...... jon gruden (sorry ilnfl)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:36 (fourteen years ago)

not familiar with those names (except for gruden, obv).

was "a private school with barely over 10K enrollment a year" when i went there in the mid-80s. somehow, tho, we found a string of magic coaches that created a massive dynasty. we're in our "lost in the wilderness" years now, i suppose.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

ohhhh lol

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

i've heard of richt, and i know georgia is a viable program. is he the best of these choices?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

mullen & edsall are two fairly obv choices -- two well thought of coaches that are punching below their weight at their respective schools

richt is a bit more tenuous -- he played at UM and is from the area & i guess people think that he might be willing to jump ship on uga before they make him walk the plank

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

ummm uga has had down years recently but i'm inclined to say that anyone that has won the SEC multiple times would probably do okay in the acc

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah

also mike leach, but that goes for like... every open job in the country (altho he did interview for the job after they fired coker)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:49 (fourteen years ago)

Apparently, Vandy is going to make a run at Gus Malzahn. tbh, I'd rather see him go to UM. Especially if Auburn gets to the championship game and loses, it's now or never time for him to call his own shots.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:53 (fourteen years ago)

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:54 (fourteen years ago)

Will Muschamp is just sitting out there in Texas waiting for Mack Brown to retire. I think if Mack decides to stay for another season, Muschamp will entertain offers from other schools.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:56 (fourteen years ago)

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

& his defense was.... less than stellar this year

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

mike leach not being the head coach for a major program (or nfl team) atm is a travesty imo

iatee, Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

his problem is that he clashed a lot w/ the texas tech brass & likely has a reputation of a pain in the ass -- which is why i think he'll prob have to rehabilitate himself somewhere that's not seen as a top 15 or 20 job

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:59 (fourteen years ago)

I think Mike Leach being as litigious as he is kind of scares some schools away.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 04:59 (fourteen years ago)

Leach did kinda get screwed though. I'd love to see Leach and/or Gruden in the SEC, that'd be entertaining.

I think Georgia would be dumb to get rid of Richt, but it's a finicky fanbase so who knows. I can't imagine he'd willingly leave for Miami without being fired first. He's not the greatest gameday coach but he's a hell of a recruiter and he's straight as an arrow, which personally I appreciate even if you don't love the god squad stuff. I'd rather have a losing Richt than a winning Tom Osborne anyway.

Disgraced Homo Cop (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:15 (fourteen years ago)

I'm sure the equipment shed incident is just the final straw for Texas Tech re: Leach. They'd been looking for a good way to relieve him of his duties for a couple seasons, and he gave it to them on a platter. Personally, I think he's an asshole and has demonstrated it on numerous occasions since his firing, but he's a great x's and o's coach that can lift lowly teams and make them look good. Vandy should be looking at him.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:20 (fourteen years ago)

yeah exactly

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:20 (fourteen years ago)

i don't see any reason to not aim high (re: malzahan) cuz the worst that someone can say is no, but i think leach is much more realistic

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

wherever leach ends up, I`m gonna watch the games

iatee, Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

i watched some texas tech games in 08, having never previously taken much interest in college football - texas (#1 at the time) was a fantastic game, then they were completely destroyed by oklahoma.

daria-g, Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:26 (fourteen years ago)

now i'm sort of following SEC due to numerous colleagues who are alums, but i don't personally have connections to any of the schools so i have no idea who to root for.

daria-g, Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:28 (fourteen years ago)

As long as you don't root for Tennessee, we'll be friends 4ever.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

Leach isn't THAT big a dick. We're not talking Mangino level, and ESPN really does owe him an apology or something for how they handled that Adam James shit. I bet Gruden would have an even tougher time dealing with boosters than Leach.

Disgraced Homo Cop (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

So let's say Georgia sacks Richt (for some insane reason), it's probable they'll go after Alabama DC Kirby Smart. They wanted him after last season for their own DC position (he's a UGA alum), but I suspect he could actually be wooed by a HC position after this year. Richt ends up at the top of Miami's list...EXCEPT I just read that Miami was really interested in Malzahn at Tulsa before he even went to Auburn, so he's definitely on the list. If he goes, that leaves Richt the odd man out. I'm sure some schools will make a play for him, but probably not any that are on the level he should be considering.

xp haha those piggies are funny

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:16 (fourteen years ago)

i don't actually think that UGA would fire richt this year tbh

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:17 (fourteen years ago)

True. He finished the season in a better position than he started it.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:21 (fourteen years ago)

unless they really wanted to make a move on malzahan or muschamp

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:22 (fourteen years ago)

which maybe they do, but i'd be surprised to see him go

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:22 (fourteen years ago)

Mack Brown kind of has to coach one more season just to preserve some legacy, right? Muschamp has to get out of there.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:23 (fourteen years ago)

the muschamp thing is bizarre -- they can't & won't push mack out & even a few years ago when muschamp agreed to the deal everyone was like "mack's still got.... probably a decade left" -- the whole thing is/was just bizarre & untenable

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:24 (fourteen years ago)

also the ncaa passed a new rule that coaches in waiting can't recruit under asst coach rules, which really throws a wrench in everything

i can't see him being there beyond next season, if even that

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:25 (fourteen years ago)

One thing I'd like to see, but probably won't happen...Chris Petersen leave Boise State and go to Michigan with Denard Robinson as his qb.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:25 (fourteen years ago)

that would be amazing -- i hope that guy eventually gives it a go somewhere else -- he's a really, really great coach (obv)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:26 (fourteen years ago)

that's why I'd like him to stay there!

iatee, Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:33 (fourteen years ago)

Boise State needs a tougher schedule, plain and simple. Follow the Bobby Bowden method: play opponents above your status until you're level with them. FSU's football program was a joke when he took over and that's how he put them on the map.

Boise's move to the Mountain West is lateral at best. They should've been trying to get into the Pac10 over the summer with Utah and Colorado.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 28 November 2010 07:22 (fourteen years ago)

Sad that Bama has to play in the Capital One Bowl, but also happy that Bama has to play in the Capital One Bowl. It's only an hour away from my house and, though I've been a lifelong fan, I've never seen them play in person. So going to this!

worried that oregon winning it all will be the first step in a decade-long pac-12 dominance (best facilities, best recruits, national title goal ever year, etc), and so for that i'm tempted to root for auburn, but i just. can't. root. for. auburn.

johnny crunch, Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

I'd feel really bad for Mississippi State if Dan Mullen leaves after just two seasons to take the UF job (makes sense for him to at least receive and offer). Someone on ESPN just said Florida may go after Stoops. I think that would result in the state of Oklahoma declaring war on the state of Florida. GET A GUN!

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

stoops was DC there under spurrier and i think UF has tried to get him every single time that job has opened since then

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

If I'm Stoops, what's the upside? It's not like Oklahoma is a struggling program and, if anything, the competition in the Big 12 is probably easier.

Now, if I'm Jon Gruden, and the Miami job wasn't enough to sway me, the UF job would definitely get my attention.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

there really is no reason for stoops to go to UF, which is why he's turned them down three separate times

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

i would be surprised if UF went after gruden -- dan mullen & charlie strong are two of the hottest coaching names & both have direct & immediate ties to the program -- if they want either of those guys, they'll get them

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

also petrino will leave arkansas in like one second to go there

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Harbaugh and Bielema receive phonecalls over the next couple days. Probably Malzahn too.

OH DUDES Can you imagine Mike Leach coaching at UF?!!!!

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

Some buzz around here that UF is going to approach Chris Petersen. This is just based on something the local sports guy said on the news, so it's not authoritative by any means, but it sounds good.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 11 December 2010 07:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah most rumors i've read are saying that they're gonna make a formal offer to him if/when stoops turns them down again, but who knows if that's true

meanwhile the miami search is supposedly down to marc tressman, al golden and randy edsall, atltho there's been so much misinformation regarding the search that i'm not believing much of anything at this point

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 December 2010 07:35 (fourteen years ago)

I really wanted him to go to Michigan, but they're being awfully slow at firing Rich Rodriguez. Surely they will, though...right? I mean, that dude is AWFUL.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 11 December 2010 07:46 (fourteen years ago)

i think a lot of ppl think they're gonna hang onto him

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 December 2010 07:48 (fourteen years ago)

one of the downsides about hiring him is that he really transformed what they look for in offensive players (big example being at QB) so you'd arguably have an even longer rebuilding project if they got rid of him

i think there are some ppl that think they could keep him on for one more year with a new DC & see what happens -- cuz their offense was still amazingly good

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 December 2010 07:49 (fourteen years ago)

i think if he loses the bowl game tho that they might just cut the cord, esp if they get any indication that harbaugh will come

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 December 2010 07:50 (fourteen years ago)

Once all that BCS buzz is gone, only true football fans will watch. All the pretend fans wont care anymore thereby generating less interest in college football and thereby bringing in less money. Thats why they havent changed the system yet. "

Yeah right, America is just getting sick of football.

A 16 team NCAA football tournament would be like the NCAA Brackets times the Superbowl. I think if done right it would possibly could develop into the biggest sporting event in the country.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

Jeze...just at thing at the sheer amount of booze, beer, food and gambling that would be done the first weekend they did this thing. You could have like 2 games Thursday night, 2 games Friday night, 4 games on Saturday then the NFL on Sunday.

Nothing would get done but the US GDP would like go up at the same time.

earlnash, Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

Fxxx off if you the Tangerine or Auto Parts USA bowl can raise that kind of spectacle.

A 16 team NCAA football tournament would be like the NCAA Brackets times the Superbowl.

It would be a circumstance where I would actually watch games that Cal wasn't playing in.

I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:41 (fourteen years ago)

I know I'm that way about the NCAA basketball tournament and I really don't watch much of it at all during the regular season (since IU sucks and hasn't been on TV much in the past couple of years).

I follow the NCAA hoop tournament like mad, partially as it was something all of the guys I went to college did, but also just because it is interesting following a team from week to week and from it you kind of get to know clubs and coaches you don't know much about.

Thing with football is it is so damn regional, who knows how good any of these clubs might be as outside of a bowl the year before or some weirdo matchup, none of the big teams from the south play someone from the west or midwest very often.

People busted on Ohio State, but they at least did a home and home with Texas recently. USC would always play ND. It was a bit different back in the 80s when there was a bunch of independants, as you would get Georgia Tech or Miami-U going out and playing someone good out west or east...but now, everyone is stuck in some huge conference with 12-14 other clubs, to play a championship game, so they frontload their schedule with Little Sister of the Blind and DivII schools.

Then you have guys like the MAC, which probably are not that good, but many of the biggers schools won't even schedule 'just in case'.

NCAA football is so fucked up, I can't even begin to look at where it is even RIGHT. C'mon beyond the inanity of having a damn computer figure out who is any good...Michigan State BEAT Wisconsin and somehow in the screwy tie-breaker sensibility of the BCS still Wisconsin is rewarded in the Big 10 crown and Rose Bowl appearance. This kind of shite is pretty much a daily crap sandwich in the world of college football, not even getting into the long time historical stupid things where Penn State had like 3 undefeated seasons without a title or however Auburn will eventually get screwed again when they win it all and some fluke of judges takes it away again.

Criminy how many titles did Ohio State and Michigan leave on the table for 30 years just for the fact that one or the other would trip them up in the November game without a shot at a title.

Maybe I went to a college that sucked at football (well they were OK when I was there), but I just don't see much appeal for anyone outside cheering for their own club in NCAA football. I don't think that would be the case at all with a tournament.

earlnash, Thursday, 16 December 2010 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

A 16 team NCAA football tournament would be like the NCAA Brackets times the Superbowl. I think if done right it would possibly could develop into the biggest sporting event in the country

wau at TCU. be interesting to see how the BCU bigwigs backpedal to defend the current system after this. no more of that "aww TCU wouldn't have stood a chance against <insert team here>"

O'Shea the Cubeman (San Te), Sunday, 2 January 2011 01:25 (fourteen years ago)

If there can't be a playoff system, I say the only two conferences who automatically qualify for the BCS are the two whose teams played in the nat'l championship game the previous season. The remaining bowl slots are up for grabs.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 2 January 2011 01:28 (fourteen years ago)

TCU looked pretty good. That was a fun game.

You know they would just shut everyone up by having two of the classic bowls in rotation being the FINAL FOUR and then having the national championship game be the game in the off week before the Superbowl.

They can talk all kinds of smack on students and stuff, but criminy when people will leave fat paycheck NFL jobs to become a 'coordinator' at a college, the whole amateur status of your league really doesn't hold up to light.

I think a playoff is inevitable in the long-term - like I'd put money on there being at least an 8 team system in place in 2030. the actual politics of how that's gonna happen are murky, and there are some very strong vested interests, but the amount of money being left off the table w/ this stupid bowl system is eventually gonna be what moves the process

Meanwhile, Alabama's picking up a guy named Phillip Ely out of Florida who I've seen play in three high school games this year, and he got injured in ALL THREE of them. Great, I can't wait for him to get injured regularly on the college level. *groan*

Andrew Luck is staying at Stanford!!!

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

really not that shocked tbh -- nfl is in a shitty situation, the kid is one year away from a degree at stanford & after what happened w/ bradford it's not like he's risking anything unless he gets into a fatal car accident

J0rdan S., Thursday, 6 January 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

I just figured that maybe he was tied closer to Harbaugh than he apparently is. (Or maybe that IS the case, and we'll find out Harbaugh's coming back?)

Luck's major is actually architectural design, which is not as impressive even though I have no idea what the curriculum is.

I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

So he draws stuff and then gives it to an engineer to do all the pesky mathematics.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

Mark Ingram, Marcell Dareus, and Julio Jones all declared for the draft today btw. That doesn't decimate the Alabama roster, but it makes a big dent. ;_;

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 January 2011 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

I've noticed it more this year than I have in the past (maybe I just have more friends now with favorite teams outside the SEC), but why don't fans of teams in other conferences cheer on their conference in bowl season? They say that's strange behavior. I think it's even stranger NOT to do that.

(Of course, the loudest complainer is my UCF friend...and Conference USA isn't anything to cheer about.)

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:07 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know if that's a thing or not, but I was loco for the the Big Ten this year (and every bowl season). Most friends of mine were Big Ten guys all the way as well. In Ohio tho, anti-Michigan sentiment runs deep to the point of nihilism. I can imagine OSU fans rooting against MSU and U of M in any bowl situation.

brownie, Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:14 (fourteen years ago)

I usually root for my conference

iatee, Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:17 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, def. rooting for oregon in the bcs champ game, even though their winning will definitely negatively affect my favorite team. also rooted hard for stanford, even though they've also beaten my team 2 years in a row. UCLA is tough, though.

rag photographique (ytth), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:24 (fourteen years ago)

Most Alabama fans I know (though I'll admit most of my Alabama fan friends are reasonable people) will be pulling for Auburn on Monday night. This might be a generational thing, though. All my friends on both sides of that fan divide respect each other and each other's team of choice..unlike older folks, whose ire runs deeper.

Tennessee is the main Alabama foe for a lot of younger people, just in general, but also because of Fulmer's tattling to the NCAA about recruiting violations. Boo to violations, but also boo to that guy being a whiny a-hole and all those whiny a-hole fans. I'm even more bitter having been an Alabama fan living in Nashville for five years, where to the torment never stopped and was even worse because Alabama wasn't exactly a powerhouse during those years.

So yeah, there are some instances where I'll root against a conference team in bowl season, but that's the exception instead of the rule.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

Good, I'm glad to hear y'all have some conference allegiance.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway...I'm sure you guys are tired of me talking about the Tide. I'll shut up (until about August).

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:32 (fourteen years ago)

^ i agree with your sentiments exactly. having shit thrown at you as you leave the rose bowl after watching your team inexplicably blow a shot at the national title makes you never want to root for a team (UCLA, obv) under any circumstances.

rag photographique (ytth), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

Auburn 38
Oregon 35

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

i think oregon is gonna win this game

auburn has had a lot of close calls and i think their defense finally goes all the way under tonight -- cam obviously has the ability to put up a vince young vs usc type game & i hon think it might take that -- oregon is much more of a complete team from skill positions on down

the only thing that scares me from oregon's perspective is nick fairley -- if he goes full suh in 09 big xii championship then the whole game changes

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 January 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)

i'm thinking something like

oregon 31 auburn 23 or something -- nat'l title games are always much more low scoring than ppl expect

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 January 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, boo hoo pac 10, but at least i don't have to hear about 'defending national champ oregon' all year reading pac 10 (sorry 12) news. so when do people start criticizing chip kelly as a bad big game coach? this is two in a row and yea it was close, but seriously his offense went over 1/2 the game without scoring.

rag photographique (ytth), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

also weirdly there was like no dramatic play at all in that game except for maybe the fourth down that oregon got where the ref went all orlando pace on the auburn defender

everything happened so quickly tho, even auburn's final drive was like 3 plays & then 5 combined minutes of booth reviews

even oregon's two point conversion attempt happened w/ like 3:30 left

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 January 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

there was just so many mistakes in that game -- cam straight blowing two touchdowns, darron thomas letting himself get eaten by nick fairley instead of handing of too lamichael -- chip kelly barely challenging auburn downfield even tho their DBs are all horrible

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 January 2011 05:27 (fourteen years ago)

goddamn, with leadership skills his father is showing, if burton junior inherited even a quarter of those, i cant believe he wasnt captain.

most teams i've played on (through college) had the team vote on captains. So if the team didnt want Junior as captain, and Senior wanted pasqualoni to veto the vote, that's even worse.

How do you know it was not a Georgia fan? They too are a hated rival and were pretty upset after what they thought was a dirty game with the Tigers this past season.

For that matter, how do you know it was not an Auburn fan trying to get Alabama in trouble in a lame attempt to take the focus off Auburn's troubles?

brownie, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that can't be the last of it

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

two months pass...

Tressel out.

lol x 1,000,000

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 May 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

it's only gonna be funny until they hire someone who is 20x the coach

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 May 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

They're just going to hire some passable guy who can keep them at the top of the Big Ten for 3 or 4 seasons until Urban Meyer can be coaxed out of retirement.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 May 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

he won't need to be coaxed & it'll happen in 2012

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 May 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

yr right.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 May 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

lol Ohio State problem just keeps getting uglier. Terrelle Pryor is probably done in college.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

Also, that story about Tressel fixing the raffles when he was an Asst. Coach is some lowdown despicable shit.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

always wondered about how college players got such sweet rides; when I was at ND I'd walk by the stadium daily & see the players drive up in Escalades & other sweet rides obv. beyond the means of what you'd expect students from their financial backgrounds to afford. Yet as far as I know ND's not been investigated for this kind of thing. So I mean it much be a pretty much open secret on every campus as to what kind of shenanigans are going on (though I know almost nothing about the shenanigans at my present school, in the Big 12, though I'm not a student either).

Euler, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure there's shenanigans going on at every big school, but some coaches are more hands on than others about attempting to keep their programs clean. Tressel clearly had everyone snowed.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

someone involved in these matters once told me that head coaches generally have their assistants do the dirty work & in exchange, promise to get those assistants better jobs, so that everyone is committed to the taint. Though this was someone at ND & that's not the only ND-associated institution that works that way...so maybe this isn't the way it is at other schools---Tressel seems to have been pretty involved in the corruption at OSU.

Euler, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

People rightly or wrongly hate Nick Saban and Urban Meyer, but I think those guys have set decent examples of how to run major programs relatively cleanly. And I'm no expert on Texas football, but I'd bet that after SMU the schools there are either superficially clean or far better at hiding their cheating.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

I highly doubt either of those two guys is clean. Coaches who know they're hot & can get jobs wherever they want can leave the program in whatever condition they want; they're off the hook if someone has to take the fall (as in Pete Carroll's case)

Euler, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

When I was in high school I had a friend who was in juco, and as soon as he transferred to a real college they hooked him up with a fancy car. And it wasn't like he was somebody special. I don't know if he even saw the field much.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

xp Winning coaches aren't invincible. Tressel will be lucky if he's not coaching a high school team next year (DIII is more likely). And I still think there are a lot more moving parts at USC than there are at a lot of other schools, and Pete Carroll might not actually be a villain (but he saw what was comin').

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

(I realize I follow the game with a willful naiveté.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

saban recruits 33 players a year and forces kids off the team through bullshit grey shirts and "medical hardships" - he is a dirtbag to the core, get real

( . __ . ) . o O ( cum ) (Princess TamTam), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

les is the only clean coach for any top program, and only because he's too dumb to deceive anyone (it all goes on behind his back)

( . __ . ) . o O ( cum ) (Princess TamTam), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

there's also been stories about saban's extreme abusiveness, calling players cunts and niggers and shit like that - so much better than giving something nice to some kid from an impoverished background so he can take care of his freakin family while you work him like a slave

( . __ . ) . o O ( cum ) (Princess TamTam), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't say he was an angel. Just that he runs a clean program.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

so as a USC homer, i can't help but be curious if the ncaa sticks with the new trend toward harsher penalties that they just defended in USC's appeal, or if they back off a little bit.

I know a guy who's dad used to be an assistant under Saban at Michigan State. He told me that his father said that Saban's by far the worst guy he's ever dealt with in 30 years in coaching.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 1 June 2011 13:40 (fourteen years ago)

Terrelle Pryor had 8 cars in 3 yrs, drove w/ suspended license since Feb.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

he's kinda putting cam newton to shame

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 June 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

i even have trouble feeling bad for this dipshit

max tldr (k3vin k.), Thursday, 2 June 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

well there's certainly nothing to feel bad about -- anyone who wants him to fail will enjoy his wake up call come the 2012 draft

carroll's legacy is pretty lol at this point

iatee, Monday, 6 June 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

Not that it wasn't inevitable, but it's now official: Pryor is dunzo at OSU.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

goodbye and good luck. I don't really root for OSU (mainly a MSU guy and I want the Big Ten to do well against other conferences) but Pryor had some great potential and was fun to watch. I think the sun might be setting Big 10 football.

brownie, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

so it looks like the usc-ohio st on-field showdowns of the past decade are gonna take a backseat to the battle over who can get pummeled harder by the ncaa
