Revis just signed a new deal with the Jets -- I think the Miami/Jets game could go either way now (but I'll still call it for Miami since Revis hasn't practiced all off-season)

In a surprise move, the Baltimore Ravens reached agreement with former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh on a one-year, $855,000 deal, according to league sources.

Seattle still owes Houshmandzadeh $6.15 million, meaning the receiver will make a total of $7 million this season.

The Jets were up 17-6 in the championship game, and might have been able to sustain it with Kris Jenkins on the field, who is imo their second best defensive player. Don't like how they handled the offseason but I still think they will be dangerous.

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

Damn, I think whoever wrote that Onion preview reads our site, as half of those things are stuff like gets said here.

•Intangibles: Can't discount the possibility of another horrific injury to quarterback Tom Brady; oh, please, Lord, let there be another horrific injury to Tom Brady
•Biggest Question: This may be the year New England finally falls out of contention, but we know full well these fucks will pull a 12-4 season out of their ass somehow

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

•Weakness: Looking at this roster, it may not be the best year to play in a stadium where fans have access to several functioning cannons
•Intangibles: Signing a rookie wide receiver named Mike Williams has done nothing but backfire throughout the entire history of the league
•Player To Watch: Remember Warrick Dunn? He was a fun player to watch. Seemed like a genuinely nice guy, too.

Seattle Seahawks

•Weakness: Team is in their 10th year of humoring quarterback and Make-A-Wish cancer patient Matt Hasselbeck
•Intangibles: Billionaire owner Paul Allen is concentrating less on his team and more on hollowing out the earth so he can live inside it with the dinosaurs there.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 7 September 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)

I’ll be honest with you; I pretty much haven’t followed much football since Manning through that pick 6 in the Super Bowl. Even if you do follow it, I think it is pretty much like reading tea leaves to know what is going on the first couple of weeks, as pre-season is such a poor indicator of much.

Minnesota at New Orleans: I’ll take the Saints at home, although they still might be hung over. Minnesota will probably try and fail to kill Drew Brees. Favre pretty much throws out the whole thing on “you gotta prepare” showing up 10 minutes before the game in some Wranglers and flip flops.

Carolina at NYG: I’ll go Giants at home, as Carolina has to be the most boring club in the NFL. The Giants are so fruity, you never know how good they are week to week either way.

Atlanta at Pittsburgh: This is kind of a tough one, as the Falcons road record over the decades is really poor and while the Steelers are probably not as good as could be, they still might be OK. Question—If they are 4-0 and Dixon’s getting the job done, does the masher get his job back? I’m going Steelers in a slight upset, even though it is the Falcons on the road.

Cleveland at Tampa Bay: Oh boy…I’m taking Cleveland to win as that would be more fun and they actually seemed to improve towards the end of last year, which the Bucs definitely did not.

Denver at Jacksonville: Jville is hard to figure, they pretty much melted away in the second half kind of like the Broncos. I think this is a toss up, and I will take the Jags to win an ugly one, although I have no idea how good either of these clubs might be.

Indianapolis at Houston: Texans usually play the Colts pretty good in Houston. They beat them a couple of years ago on a ½ mile field goal and then pretty much gave away the game the last couple of years after beating them pretty good for 3 quarters. I’m going Indy, but I’d like to know how well they will run the ball on Sunday. Their running game was pretty pathetic last year, had to be the worse running game to ever get to a Super Bowl.

Miami at Buffalo: I could believe Buffalo making it a game, as that sometimes happens in division, but the Dolphins seem to be a pretty talented club all the way round, so give me Miami.

Detroit at Chicago: I don’t think the problems they had last year really got fixed much. The O-line is either young and bad or old and getting bad, which means they probably still won’t be able to run and Cutler will still be running for his life. Sucks as they actually have a few decent skills guys, but I think it would take Sweetness to be able to run behind that line. The defense is getting old too, so it is hard to figure where they will be. I’m going Bears, as you cannot pick the Lions to win on the road.

Oakland at Tennessee: Well Oaktown is going to be better, as even though Jason Campbell is a bust, he is not a BIG F-IN BUST like JaBustus. Tennessee looked pretty good at the end of last year and I’ll take them to win, but if Oakland can run the ball or get a couple of big turnovers they might hang around.

Cincinnati at New England: Freak City Open on this one…TO, OCHO & MOSS man in the same stadium, criminy this should be like some WWF event. I want to go Bengals and I hope they cream those bastards, but it’s the Pats and they will probably squeak out a win.

Arizona at St. Louis: AZ has some talent but it seems really weird to be picking a club with Derek Anderson to win, then again he has Larry Fitzgerald instead of Braylon Edwards. It is also on the road and the Cards are not exactly road warriors. Err….I guess Cards it is, but don’t feel good on it.

San Fran at Seattle: Seahawks might bounce back, but I think the 49ers are a bit better club.

Green Bay at Philadelphia: Hard to figure on Eagles without McNabb, I’ll go Green Bay, but they were pretty shaky at times. Philly isn’t an easy place to win.

Dallas at Washington: Which owner do you despise more? I don’t care who wins, I just want something to happen to cause both of those pricks to somehow lose money on the game (as long as no fans get hurt or nothing). I guess Dallas, but big whoop.

Baltimore at NJ Jets: Pretty similar clubs…although the Ravens threw it a heck of a lot more than you would expect last year. Jets have gotten pretty inflated and the Ravens were kind of droopy down the stretch. I’m still going out and taking Ravens in an upset.

SD at KC: I’m going Chargers, but KC is always a tough place for an AFC West team to play. You never know what SD will show up, but I think KC still is a bit below the talent level. KC would need to capitalize on some Charger mistakes to win.

•Intangibles: Can't discount the possibility of another horrific injury to quarterback Tom Brady; oh, please, Lord, let there be another horrific injury to Tom Brady

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was involved in a car accident early this morning in Boston's Back Bay section.

Brady, 33, declined treatment, according to WEEI-AM Radio, at the scene (see WHDH video here) and headed for Gillette Stadium.

The two-car accident, which occurred at about 6:34 a.m., involved an Audi sedan driven by Brady, law enforcement sources told the Boston Globe, and a minivan. A passenger in the van was unconscious, removed via the jaws of live and taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital, police said. Sources tell WHDH-TV that the minivan ran a red light and struck Brady's car at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Gloucester Street.

Hanna LeStrange, who was staying nearby, told the Globe that she went to the scene after hearing the crash.

"It was just really high-impact, you could tell. The front of the Audi was off," she said. "[Brady] was sort of bent over, looked completely shaken up. He got up and just started wiping his jeans," she said.

Another witness told the Globe that Brady "looked a little shook up, shaking his hands." He went into an ambulance and a few minutes later was picked up by someone in a Jeep Cherokee and drove off. WEEI reported that Brady was believed to be seeing New England Patriots medical personnel.

"It took us a few minutes to realize it was him," the witness, who declined to be identified, told the Globe.

The witness' co-worker, who also declined to identify herself to the Globe, said of the passenger who was hospitalized: "He was pretty bad. He was lying in the back of the van," she said.

Brady was heading to the stadium to continue preparations for the Patriots' season opener Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals when the accident occurred.

Ray Lewis chimes in on LT & Chargers situation. Says LT is currently one of "top 3 or 4 backs" in the league. Then adds "It wasn't his fault San Diego's offensive line didn't produce, or they went without a fullback (in 2009)."

I don't think he's right, but it's an interesting observation. The Chargers definitely ran a lot of plays without a fullback last year.

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 September 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

okay, so if LT is one of the top "3 or 4 backs" in the league
and johnson, mo-jo and AP are CLEARLY the top three
than he's saying LT is better than Ray Rice?

Gulab jamun (Gulab Jamun) into the syrup please. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 9 September 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

I imagine he's saying Ray Rice is better than Mo-Jo.

Satillite Dish is pretty much having it free open bar on all of the games this week, which is good as I know that Bears/Lions game would not be on TV around here.

I'll probably be hopping betweeen Bears/Lions, Colts/Texans, Bengals/Pats & Reds/Pirates game. Too many things I would want to watch, all on at the same time. Kind of sucks as I don't really care about anything else at the 4pm games. Don't really care about the Wash/Cowboys game, as I despise both owners (McNabb's cool though). I guess I will do that lawnwork I keep putting off at 4.

earlnash, Sunday, 12 September 2010 04:58 (fifteen years ago)

did not realize dolphina were 0 -- 5 the last five games in Buffalo, or that the dolphins were 1 -- 6 in season openers since 2003. The team's had a shakey offseason, too (e.g., parcells stepping-down, into a ''consulting'' role, just days ago). If we lose this game, look out below, given our next 7 or so opponents.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 12 September 2010 11:20 (fifteen years ago)

well, sun-sentinel sportswriter dave hyde sees dolphins going 10 -- 6, so what do i know (nothing obv).

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

I always figured Singletary is probably a big rah rah coach like Ditka, not really a guy that has some great offensive or defensive scheme ideas.
His success as a head coach is probably only as a good as his players and coaches will allow.

earlnash, Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)

I think you're right.

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

did any niners players not come out after the half? he looks like the kind of dude that might try to motivate his team by singling someone out for a shame beating

There was Manny Fernandez, who was a nut and one of the better defensive players on those 70s Dolphins teams.

There are a plague of Cowboy fans everywhere. LeBron James is a Cowboy fan, which says something.

<3 4-eva,

PS: why, if you're gonna run vick, would you run him right up the middle & not outside was exactly what we were saying. But I was with two people from Wisconsin so we decided it was OK for that to be a mystery forever.

Kinda want Mike Tirico to be calling this game so he can start being like "That was awful!" like he did during the Ravens-Packers abomination last year.

Hey there's Clinton Portis getting his ass worked on. (I used to do athletic training & physical therapy aide work so I have been the guy touching the guy's ass, believe me, but still, you know, maybe don't air that on television.)

I like the new Meadowlands, but it doesn't have the (for lack of a better word) "personality" the old one had. Like, when I used to watch a Jets or Giants game, I kept waiting for things to fall off the rafters or for the turf to start rolling up like a carpet.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 September 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

There is always some fugly football, especially early in the season, but I have seen quite a bit of fugly football this week.

Teams are not really doing anything in the pre-season, they go to an 18 game regular season, the first month even for good teams is going to be fugly.

i cant believe a kansas city chiefs game is already better than that jets game.

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

Jets were so blown up, they were at best a .500 club last year and they caught a hell of a lot of breaks, NE was down last year, Cincy and SD were both banged up when they caught them in the playoffs. Their defense is pretty good, but it isn't a total f'n ball buster like when the Ravens or Bears won it all. NY media is a harsh mistress, I expect the venom to follow pretty quick with a bunch of "told you so".

Maybe the Jets will bounce back and prove me wrong, but I don't think they were ever going to end up better than 9-7 or 10-6 anyway. If they were smart they would have done like Philly did a few years back and got a vet backup like Garcia or Collins, someone who has won a game or two. Thing is that the QB play is so top heavy, with the guys that are good so way above the din of the rest of the shlubs, there really isn't as many decent old vets to get.

everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

I think in KC, they would probably tie a bunch of BBQ or some good steaks around the football in a scrum game. It isn't as much of a bacon town as some places.

earlnash, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

ok so if we do this big get together to lol @ cowboys, do we have the money to fly to dallas, buy those standing room only seats, and jerseys for whoever is playing them that night? because i feel like it'd be the ultimate to do this in the terrordome.

Dude the Chiefs would bring in Rodney Harrison if he wanted to take a pay cut and go back to playing. They would probably hook him up with some Kansas bull farmer that has the good shit to get him back in shape quick.

earlnash, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

I underestimated KC's chances at gelling this quickly. I thought it would take a few games. They definitely have the players and the playcallers, but they're INSTA-GOOD.

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

Eli is pretty cuet it's true

Real talk imo

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

eli is cuet but they are just different kinds of cuet. cuet is not a zero-sum game.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

eli is a better qb, of course

horseshoe, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

Frustrating team to root for.

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 04:47 (fifteen years ago)

and added dreamyness

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 04:48 (fifteen years ago)

It wasnt a tackle, it was an incomplete pass. But "scaring the shit out of somebody so he drops the ball" would be a good fantasy stat.

i don't think it was fear that caused him to miss that catch, I think it was Lewis bodyslamming him

Gulab jamun (Gulab Jamun) into the syrup please. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

It was that fear from getting crushed that probably caused him to wimp out on the fourth down play where he ran short of the first down.
