Clinton Portis and Albert Haynesworth performed a scripted skit for reporters in the locker room Thursday afternoon in which Portis declined to answer questions and Haynesworth covered the running back's mouth with strips of black athletic tape.

"I guess in this world, we don't have a lot of people with backbones. Just because somebody pay you money don't mean they'll make you do whatever they want. I mean, that means everything is for sale. I mean, I'm not for sale," Haynesworth said on 106.7 The Fan, via the Washington Post. "Yeah, I signed the contract and got paid a lot of money, but just because, that don't mean I'm for sale or a slave or whatever."

powerpoint coordination specialist, chicago bears (daria-g), Sunday, 10 October 2010 22:29 (fifteen years ago)

"Got everybody going crazy out there and that touchdown and the celebration, it just all worked together."

[..] "You thought that was good," (Rick) Maese asked.

"I thought it was great!" Armstrong said. "I don't know what you're thinking. Let me see you dance! Put the camera on him."

Maese pointed out that he hadn't scored a touchdown and so wouldn't be celebrating, and Armstrong nodded. "All right, then," he said. "I'm gonna keep on dancing and you keep reporting."

Shanahan on Monday said McNabb has been struggling with hamstring injuries for five weeks and didn't have the "cardiovascular endurance" to stay on the field with the game on the line against Detroit. Shanahan said he even considered not playing McNabb at all against the Lions.

Rex Grossman, Jr., decked head to toe in burgundy and gold, has just bear-hugged his son, patting him on the chest of his pinstripe navy suit, telling him through an emotion-choked voice, "Best game you ever played. Best game you ever played."

The mouse didn't just survive the venomous jaws of Cowboys Stadium; Rex thrived

"I felt like I played as well as I could have and I tried as hard as I could have. It's up to you guys to decide all those things."

"I thought Rex did an excellent job today," said Coach Mike Shanahan

From the press coverage you really wouldn't get the impression that Grossman was responsible for 3 turnovers in a loss to a 4-9 team.

I DIED, Monday, 20 December 2010 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

DC evening news teaser was like "grossman played a career game" and i'm like WHAT GAME DID YOU WATCH because those 2 first-half turnovers are what dug the hole in the first place

daria-g, Monday, 20 December 2010 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

Rexy would make a decent backup QB, as he does have a live arm and can get hot. Grossman had a few really excellent games with the Bears. You are pretty much playing Russian roulette to give him the keys to the offense, as he is maddeningly inconsistent. It is just as possible next week he will go 8 for 32 for about 112 yards and 3 picks next week.

Shanahan can keep it up that McNabb is the reason they were not winning and I don't doubt that Donovan has maybe lost a step, BUT that defense is giving up more yards than anyone in the NFL, is near the bottom in sacks, totally middling in getting turnovers and giving up points. Might have been different if Portis doesn't go down, but they can't run the ball either and their offensive line isn't that great.

Go ahead and give up McNabb to the Niners or Vikings. I guarantee if you put McNabb with the Vikings and those receivers are healthy, the guy will put up some numbers. If you put McNabb on the Niners and with those skills guys, they are more than solid. Go ahead and those two clubs will be in the playoffs next year, while the Redskins again have a losing record out of the playoffs.

I DIED, Monday, 20 December 2010 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

before this game, the Skins ranked something like 10th in the league in passing yards and in the bottom 5 is rushing yards, passing yards allowed, and rushing yards allowed. They need better numbers from the quarterback, but not as badly as they need them in pretty much every single other position.

It has to be a personality conflict thing with Shanahan, which is kind of weird as at least on public persona, Donovan McNabb seems like mr. easy-goes-it-bro. Donovan has had a lot of B.S. tossed at him for a low key dude that isn't beating his chest and making all sorts of nutty public comments from Rush Limbaugh to T.O. to all of the crap with him getting sick in the Superbowl and now this. He has to be like WTF?

The dumb thing is that they got draft picks and shiteloads of money tied up in Hanyesworth and McNabb and they pretty much made them radioactive with little chance of recouping much out of what they got invested. It's just stupid.

earlnash, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

I've never liked Shannahan but that was more of an "omg I hate the Broncos so much" rivalry thing...but I honestly never would have thought that personality conflicts on this level, if that's what this is, would even be in his repertoire. And if it was a low-level coach you could say it was Snyder machinations but that doesn't seem possible with Shannahan driving things. I just don't get it at all.

Can a sports journo please investigate this as a tell-all book to be published as a later date so we can finally get some idea of wtf is going on here?

In the past three games - plus a brief appearance Oct. 31 at Detroit - Grossman was responsible for eight turnovers: four interceptions and four lost fumbles.

"I feel like I can play at a Pro Bowl level. I'm not sure if I did that," Grossman said. "But there was times I felt I was playing at a high level. Made a few mistakes here and there. For the most part, it was a tough situation to be put in. I feel like I did an okay job, but I can play a lot better."

Bernard Hopkins rips Donovan McNabb
EmailPrintComments
574
ESPN.com news services
Boxer Bernard Hopkins, a Philadelphia Eagles fan, has ripped Donovan McNabb before. On Tuesday, he took his apparent disdain for the quarterback to another level.

Hopkins, in Philadelphia for his May 21 fight against Jean Pascal, invited reporters to watch him train Tuesday and decided to take additional verbal jabs at McNabb and even implied that the Washington Redskins quarterback wasn't black enough.

"Forget this," Hopkins said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News, and pointed to his own skin. "He's got a suntan. That's all."

According to Hopkins, McNabb had a privileged upbringing in Chicago and isn't as tough as himself, current Eagles quarterback Michael Vick or Cincinnati Bengals receiver Terrell Owens, who famously had a falling out with McNabb before being released by Philadelphia in 2006. Hopkins said Tuesday that McNabb and Owens essentially didn't speak the same language.

"T.O. got [into] the boardroom and saw the way they talked to McNabb. Coming from where he [came from] -- that's strange to some white people, when a black man speaks," Hopkins said, according to the Daily News. He said Owens "[wasn't] used to this language. [He's] used to speaking up.' "

Hopkins said that is why McNabb felt a sense of betrayal when he was traded by the Eagles to the Redskins before last season.

"Why do you think McNabb felt he was betrayed? Because McNabb is the guy in the house, while everybody else is on the field. He's the one who got the extra coat. The extra servings. 'You're our boy,' " Hopkins said, according to the Daily News, and patted a member of the media on the back to illustrate his point. "He thought he was one of them."

When contacted by the Daily News, McNabb's publicist said the quarterback would not have a comment.

While he questioned McNabb's mettle, Hopkins didn't take a shot at McNabb's integrity.

"Nice guy. I'd trust him around my kids," Hopkins said, according to the Daily News.
