Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

DET @ MIN : Lions have almost gotten there twice, and played Philly really hard last week. I think Favre is toast, at least until Rice comes back. So, Lions.
DAL @ HOU : I can't think of any reason whatsoever that Houston loses this game.
BUF @ NE : ^ I can't think of any reason whatsoever that New England loses this game.
CIN @ CAR : ^ I can't think of any reason whatsoever that Cincinnati loses this game.
ATL @ NO : Falcons aren't really clicking yet, and putting a whoopin' on Arizona is a red herring. Saints.
PIT @ TB : I would've said Pittsburgh before, but it looks like Leftwich will be the QB. Tampa honestly looks better in this situation.
CLE @ BAL : Ravens O is shittier than anyone predicted, and Browns O may just win by a point or two. Browns win, maybe?
TEN @ NYG : I think the Titans poor W2 performance was a lark. They should beat the football Giants even on the road.
SF @ KC : I'm pulling for the Chiefs until further notice.
WAS @ STL : I like the Skins here, even though the Rams are improving (baby steps).
PHI @ JAC : If Kolb is back, it becomes less of a certainty. But I still think the Iggles win.
SD @ SEA : I'm starting to really hate the Chargers, but they'd have to be asleep to lose this one.
OAK @ ARI : Ugh, is this really happening? It will probably end in overtime in a 0-0 tie. (Raiders)
IND @ DEN : Colts get it together and start their streak here.
NYJ @ MIA : I have every hope this resembles the Jets/Fins game from early last year, including the Miami win.
GB @ CHI : Against all good judgement, I'm picking Bears to go 3-0.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:09 (fifteen years ago)

DAL @ HOU : I can't think of any reason whatsoever that Houston loses this game.

they were a 45 yard fourth down heave away from losing to the redskins fwiw

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

i def can't think of a reason why new england or cincy would lose tho

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:14 (fifteen years ago)

xp Redskins def better team at this point than the Cowboys, and have a close win to prove it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

also this isn't about football but i think i should point out that i was just watching "diner's, drive ins & dives" and they were at a diner in pittsburgh and their signature dish is a prime rib salad that has french fries in the salad

just to get us in the right mindframe for week 3

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

ha man idk... the cowboys haven't looked great but i wouldn't say that the redskins are definitely better -- they prob don't win that game if not for the fluke felix jones fumble

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

not that i would come anywhere near picking the cowboys over the texans at home, but i was just giving one reason

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

also reggie bush out 6 weeks

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

Fair enough. I'm buying into Tom Jackson's Houston hype, though. Now that they've got a decisive divisional win at home (over the Colts) and a comeback win on the road (over the Skins), they've got an equal balance of skill and confidence.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man, 6 weeks?! That makes me sad irl, but it makes me happy in fantasy because Pierre is one of my RBs in the 8-team league.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 05:24 (fifteen years ago)

8-8 last wk; 18-14 overall

DET @ MIN : lions havent won a game on the road since 1984 or something - vikes
DAL @ HOU : still fully expect the texans to go 8-8 somehow but will take them here
BUF @ NE : pats
CIN @ CAR : bengals
ATL @ NO : saints
PIT @ TB : pitt
CLE @ BAL : ravens
TEN @ NYG : chris johnson is gonna torch the giants & the fans are gonna be ready 2 kill this new coordinator; i guess nyg could still outscore them? but ill still go - titans
SF @ KC : kc
WAS @ STL : skins
PHI @ JAC : eagles
SD @ SEA : bolts
OAK @ ARI : i think the raiders!
IND @ DEN : Colts
NYJ @ MIA : gonna say miami
GB @ CHI : i think the pack

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

DET @ MIN : I feel comfortable picking the lions
DAL @ HOU : Dallas in an empty "ship-righting" win. That said, I suspect Mario Williams tees off on TR.
BUF @ NE : ^ I can't think of any reason whatsoever that New England loses this game.
CIN @ CAR : ^ I can't think of any reason whatsoever that Cincinnati loses this game.
ATL @ NO : Saints.
PIT @ TB : Pit
CLE @ BAL : BAL
TEN @ NYG : TN
SF @ KC : SF
WAS @ STL : WAS
PHI @ JAC : PHI w/ Vick as starter (starter = Start of game + >50% of snaps), JAC w/ Kolb (Kolb = Start of Game + >50% snaps). I feel comfortable w/ this prediction split.
SD @ SEA : I'm starting to really hate the Chargers, but they'd have to be asleep to lose this one.
OAK @ ARI : Raiders
IND @ DEN : Colts get it together and start their streak here.
NYJ @ MIA : NYJ irritating team of destiny
GB @ CHI : GBP

seems like it's a week to pick a lot of road teams? always an uneasy feeling.

DET @ MIN : vikes
DAL @ HOU : this feels like it "should" be a cowboys win but texans in a shootout
BUF @ NE : pats
CIN @ CAR : bengals
ATL @ NO : saints
PIT @ TB : steelers, though i don't know how they score
CLE @ BAL : ravens
TEN @ NYG : giants
SF @ KC : niners

DET @ MIN : As scrappy as they've been, I can't see the lions beating a team that needs a win this desperately. Vikings
DAL @ HOU : Stern looks between Romo and Jerry Jones forthcoming. Texans
BUF @ NE : Still don't understand how they lost to the Jets. Pats
CIN @ CAR : Bengals I guess? Haven't seen them this year but the panthers look pretty weak, so
ATL @ NO : Saints, but could be a surprisingly good shootout.
PIT @ TB : I'm going to keep picking against Tampa Bay until they lose one. Steelers
CLE @ BAL : Ravens if they can get Flacco out of the toilet
TEN @ NYG : Is Vince freaking out again? tentative titans
SF @ KC : Chiefs

zzz boring Raider talk: Raiders will go over .500 if Gradkowski does the cleanup like he did against the Rams, and McFadden stays healthy & runsrunsruns. If it's all Campbell all the time, I think we're hosed. And that's not so much against Campbell as O-Line being in a state of perpetual stink (same as it ever was)

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

DET @ MIN : vikings i suppose though detroit was putting up a good fight against the eagles, and the vikings look a little old and confused
DAL @ HOU : texans' O is epic and the cowboys' D won't be able to stop them imo
BUF @ NE : patriots
CIN @ CAR : bengals
ATL @ NO : atlanta is better this year than last but still not up there with new orleans
PIT @ TB : it'll be close but steelers
CLE @ BAL : ravens
TEN @ NYG : giants are gonna try to stop CJ and let the QB(s?) try to win it for tenn, which they will fail to do.
SF @ KC : if the niners can keep the ball for more than 30 seconds at a time on offense, they should be alright
WAS @ STL : wash

Dude no way. The Bears line can't protect Cutler at all, and Clay Matthews is a steroid monster right now.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

Weirdness, thy name is Monday Night Football.

Close games are usually closer, upsets happen more often than usual, great players play poorly, poor players play greatly. So, while Green Bay should absolutely win this, I'm going with Chicago anyway. (I'm not putting a lot of confidence points on it, though.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

one amazing thing about the bears so far is that Cutler has been so resolute and tough in the face of constant pressure. He's a SOB, but a tough SOB.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 22 September 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

Couple of things I have noticed...

Houston Texans have given up over 800 yards in passing in the first two weeks.

Talking heads are talking like the Bears don't have any 'real' receivers. Now going into last year, I could see this point, as they didn't have much experience. They put up some yards up last year, even if the interceptions killed them. Their wide outs are just flat out fast, even some of the backups like Bennett. I'd like to see them have a hands/possession receiver, but they pretty much have that with Forte and he has the ability to make a move after the catch. Olsen isn't bad either. That offensive line...err, I hope they can keep Cutler from getting killed.

Bears defense put some flat out knocks on the Cowboys last week.

earlnash, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

Have you guys noticed that on the team pages for Yahoo (those of you who play in the fantasy leagues, anyway) they list salaries? I was just peeping the Raiders page and saw this: punter Shane Lechler makes $6,401,560 in 2010, while Jason Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski and Michael Bush don't even make that much combined. Punting is lucrative!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

To be fair, Lechler may be most reliable player on team. "May"

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 September 2010 05:10 (fifteen years ago)

Sources say Jackson’s agents will attempt to get back at Smith by making sure their receiver, once he ends up with a new team next spring (or later, depending upon the uncertain labor landscape), has an inordinately low base salary for 2011 – which would likely reduce the compensatory pick the Chargers would receive for losing Jackson from a potential third-rounder to a sixth- or seventh-round selection.

Haha that is genius.

Sorry guys, I have to rant and the AFL board is tumbleweeds. Whatever issues the NFL has with o/t rules in Superbowls, it's all gravy compared to Australian Rules Football: AFL Grand Final was played today (well tomorrow, whatver, timezones, ow)...both teams tied the score at the end of regulation. Aaaaand that's all.
Official league rules say no extra time in the Grand Final, so...no extra time. Both teams come back next week to play it all over again. Stupid bloody archaic rulebook, probably still has penalties for untrimmed mustaches and not folding your breeches correctly before a game. GAH!!!!!! St Kilda haven't won a premiership since 1966; last year they were beaten in the grand final in a heartbreaker; this year they tie. If they don't win the do-over game, I'm pretty sure they'll chomp down on cyanide pills.

The end.

A couple of those dudes have nice ink.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 25 September 2010 08:04 (fifteen years ago)

Quick AFL scoring, 101:

A goal = 6 points
A behind = 1 point (There's an extra post on either side of the goals, so if you kick a point and you miss, and the ball goes between the other posts, it's a 'behind'. Like a 'nice try' point).

10 goals, 8 behinds = 68 (Saints, ie Saint Kilda, known as the Saints bc its in their name obv)
9 goals, 14 behinds = 68 (Pies, ie Collingwood who are known at the Magpies b/c they're black and white like the bird..Pies is just bc Australians shorten all words wherever possible to make it easier to talk fast)

I'm all for AFL. it's like if every game was run like the final NFL desperation ploy of passing the ball backwards to eight different players on a last second kickoff return.

In fact, since we're so inclusive, we could rename this board "I Love Football".

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

Last week 11-5 (season 22-10)

DET @ MIN : I think the Lions are improving, but the Vikings D should be able to hold them down enough to win.
DAL @ HOU :
BUF @ NE : Patriots
CIN @ CAR : Bengals, but I could see this being kind of ugly and the Panthers hold around.
ATL @ NO : If it was in Atlanta, I might go Falcons, as I think the Saints are a bit infallible, but NO it is.
PIT @ TB : Steelers defense looks to be reloaded, even with the QB troubles I'll take Pittsburgh. It would be a huge win for TB if it happened.
CLE @ BAL : I'll take Ravens in a snoozer fugly played game like usual.
TEN @ NYG : Both of these clubs took a crap last week. Who knows...I'll go Giants.
SF @ KC : This should be a pretty good game. KC at home. SF had a real QB I think they would be really good, but they don't have one.
WAS @ STL : Washington but it will be closer than expected.
PHI @ JAC : Both of these clubs are really inconsistent over the years. I think the Eagles have the talent and should win, but I would believe they would come out flat and j-ville's D could step up and win. I'll take the Eagles but I don't feel confident on it.
SD @ SEA : Chargers should win, but Seattle can be a tough place to get a win. If they lose that is one more knot in the noose for Norv Turner.
OAK @ ARI : Both of these clubs pretty much illustrate what happens when you get pathetic QB play. I'm going Raiders with Gradkowski, as long as he doesn't get knocked out of the game.
IND @ DEN : I'm sure some real Broncos fans are dying to win this one, as Peyton Manning has used Denver as his bitch over the years both completely destroying them a few times and stealing away victories at the final second. I'm going Colts, as I don't think Denver is ready for prime time and without Moreno, they might not be able to run quite as well, which is the key to beating Indy (control the clock and keep the offensive off the field0.
NYJ @ MIA : Lord will ESPN and the NFL Network shut the fxxx up about the Jets? I'm taking Dolphins just hoping that they might take the din down a notch.
GB @ CHI : Hmmmmm....I want to take the Bears and I really hope they impale those bastards in Yellow, but the betting side of me knows that the Pack probably have the defensive goodies to really run havok with Chicago's crappy o-line. Packers but I hope I am wrong.

earlnash, Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

Oh Yeah - Dallas at Houston -- This is a hard game to pick. They are kind of the same club, lots of talent and some star power but they will do dumb plays to blow games. Houston has given up a crap load of passing yards in the past couple of weeks and the Cowboys are getting back a couple of O-lineman from injuries. I'm taking Cowboys but like with the Indy game, if Houston wants to step up to the big leagues they got to win this one and I am still a bit skeptical. A Cowboy 0-3 start would be great from a schadenfreude perspective.

earlnash, Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

DET @ MIN : Detroit. Would that even be considered an upset pick anymore? Detroit's getting better and better and I predict Favreceptions galore.
DAL @ HOU : Houston. Wade has got to be fored if Dallas loses, right?
BUF @ NE : Pats. Moss and Welker please score ten TDs apiece kthxbi.
CIN @ CAR : God the Panthers are awful.
ATL @ NO : Saints are bad but they're not THAT bad.
PIT @ TB : Steelers, duh.
CLE @ BAL : Cribbs can't even return the ball well anymore! Ravens in a blowout.
TEN @ NYG : Giants
SF @ KC : Chiefs. Will Thomas Jones please blow out his knee in four places???
WAS @ STL : Redskins. McNugget is my man.
PHI @ JAC : Jags
SD @ SEA : Chargers
OAK @ ARI : Cards. How in God's name did Derek Anderson make the Pro Bowl???
IND @ DEN : Colts
NYJ @ MIA : Dolphins in a snoozefest
GB @ CHI : Packers. This shoud be a great game.

None of the four games I want to see are being shown on regular TV or basic cable. Kinda hate that I have to sit at Buffalo Wild Wings all day just to watch NFL games. Insight also, to my knowledge, doesn't offer any sort of NFL fastpass kinda package, a la DirecTV, where you can watch all the games.

OK, rant over. Guess I'm watching the Bungles.

I'm watching the Bengals and the Panthers. Don't know if Palmer can't go deep or his wide receivers can't go deep, but like last year, Cincy is running a total basic offense. For about a season and a half, the Bengals used to be able to run a Indy/NE attacking offense, but that is long gone. This slow down basic stuff works in the big games with the tough teams like the Steelers or Ravens, keeping it close, problem is that they will play a club like the Panthers who doesn't have much offense and it also keeps them in the game.

Dhani Jones with causing a fumble for the Bengals. Cincy needs a TD to put the Panthers out of this game. Bengals keep back like 7 dudes and Carolina will rush 3 and they seem to keep getting pressure. Got it to the 5, they got to punch this sucker in. Got it punched in.

After the first half fireworks last year, the Saints won a bunch of games like they have in the past three weeks. They haven't really been stomping clubs, just playing smart enough to win. They don't dominate.

right but this isn't some dude out of college - it's a guy who, at various points of his career, looked like one of the 6 or 7 best qbs in the nfl, and in the long-term has proven himself not to be one

xp

iatee, Monday, 27 September 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

but

- i don't think he ever played on a team this talented when he was in atlanta -- i don't remember the skill position players on those vick teams, but i doubt they stack up w/ jackson/cellek/mccoy/maclin

- important people seem to think that he's changed his mindset as a player -- on nfl matchup last night they showed some video where he def seems much more committed to the pass & he seems generally more accurate

we'll see but he looks like the real deal to me

My real hope is a goal line stand, but my secondary hope is that the Jets do something stupid and attempt a 2pt conversion and miss it, then the Dolphins go down the field and tie/win.

49ers have fired Jimmy Raye: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/27/jimmy-raye-gets-run-away-from-niners/

Earlier this morning, Rosenthal posted that 49ers coach Mike Singletary gave offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye the dreaded vote of confidence. Singletary specifically said that Raye will remain in the job for the rest of the season.

Apparently, the 49ers' season is over. (As a practical matter, it possibly is.)

Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reports that Raye has been fired.

Unless Singletary decided to pull an Andy Reid about-face in a matter of hours, it's possible that the order came from higher up in the organization, possibly with a "fire Raye or you're out" ultimatum.

Then again, we continue to believe that no one in the 49ers organization would have the nerve to tell Singletary that he's out of a job.

Still, the move brings to mind whispers around the league the Singletary wasn't ready to become a head coach after being elevated into the position during the 2008 season.

LaCanfora also reports that Mike Johnson has been promoted into Raye's job. Two weeks ago, Singletary and others in the organization suspected that Johnson was the "rat" who spoke to the media about Raye's actual or perceived flaws in calling plays quickly.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 September 2010 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

^ The year's most wonderful soap opera.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 September 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

i did not realize that jimmy raye was a 64 year-old coach who has coordinated only three seasons where the offense was ranked in the top 16, last being the chiefs in 2000. i mean, why would you hire this guy in the first place?

call all destroyer, Monday, 27 September 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

That's an excellent question, and goes to the root of why the Niners have been so bad for so long.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 September 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

cf: Tom Walsh, Oakland Raiders 2006. (Though probably an extreme example in contrast). Who knows why the hell these people get hired.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 27 September 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

Jimmy Raye had been a trusted assistant behind Norv, who had been the one coordinator Alex Smith had some success with before Norv took the San Diego job, so the theory was that maybe he could duplicate that success. However, Singletary did not allow Raye to run a Norv-esque system. Raye and/or Johnson implemented some spread offense at the end of last season and the team looked pretty good. Then they drafted two huge dudes and tried to go back to Mike's '80s offense and it didn't work.

I mean, obviously Raye had his own problems this year, but I don't think the problem was that Raye was too old fashioned or didn't know what he was doing.

How does Daunte Culpepper not have a job in the NFL, btw. Some seriously gross QB play out there.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Monday, 27 September 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Weeeelll...friends of mine watched him in a UFL game - Sacramento Mountain Lions v Florida Tuskers (Brooks Bollinger as QB, lol!) and they said Culpepper looked pretty bad. He made Brooks Bollinger look like Michael Vick. And honestly, he didn't get many reps with the Raiders as backup but he was looking slow and creaky when he came in. He's not anywhere near as mobile as he used to be.
His arm's pretty nice, but I dunno that anyone would take a risk on him now. He's way too injury prone.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 27 September 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

That's kind of sad.

There's always Jeff Garcia, though. I would love if Garcia were to eventually be signed to every NFL team, even if it's an honorary signing, before he finally retires.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

Watching this Bears and Packers game, with pretty much ZERO running game and just a throwing spectacular albeit not in a complete spread made me start thinking about the "run and shoot offense". Don't know if you remember it much, but pretty much current NFL is a whole lot like this concept that was big in the 80s with a couple of clubs, mostly the Warren Moon Oilers. There was some passing success but the mindset of the time in an age of the 'west coast offense' and the 52 defense that it couldn't control the ball and be a real winning club.

That spread offense that is big in college reminds me quite a bit like how it was run, biggest difference is that the QB is much more of a threat to run in the formation than back in the run and shoot days.

Saw this quote looking it up at Wikipedia and it is pretty true.

""Now I look around, and the Patriots and the Colts and people like that are running what we ran and saying, 'That's how you play the game.' Knowing I was a part of that with Jerry and Mouse (Davis) gives me a lot of satisfaction. Now everybody in the National Football League does what we do now. It just so happens that New England does it every play." - June Jones (2008)[44]

also jermichael finley would have a minimum of 12 catches every game

on my team where i have devin hester and jermichael finley

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 September 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

Martz gave NE a Superbowl not running it SOME even though he had Marshall Faulk. They run the ball a few times and cut down the clock, no way NE wins that first Superbowl.

man that has me thinking of like... a thriller set in a bakery, where the killer stabs to death a few employees but accidentally leaves behind an identifying artifact in a vat of pudding -- little did he know that one of his victims was not quite dead, and when the scene is discovered, the victim's last, dying words are "the truth... is in the pudding..."

The "villain on this week's Simon vs Simon" look.

so many irl lols can't believe no one has made this movie yet

horseshoe, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

I was watching this with my friends from Wisconsin, and a couple of friends who inexplicably enjoy the Bears, so I could not share it with you guys, but basically all I would have done was type out profanities in capital letters every time something good happened but was immediately negated because of a penalty. This happened many times tonight.

On the plus side, watching the NFL while eating BBQ and hanging out with four of your best dudes is a pretty solid way to make up for a 13+ hour day of surgery clerkship.

so wait i had to go to bed after the fumble, what did mccarthy do exactly?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)

the bears got it down to about the three yard line with maybe like 1:29 left and the pack had their one timeout & instead of letting them score a td the packers D keeps the bears out of the end zone until the clock gets to 8 seconds or whatever and robbie gould hits a glorified extra point

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah tbqh i was certain the pack was setting up to let someone just dive into the end zone.

('_') (omar little), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

gotcha.

i was watching highlights at noon and am trying to figure out if the packers ever gave tauscher help on peppers? he obv could not handle julius on his own.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, that was embarrassing

Muscus ex Craneo Humano (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

All the talk before the season about the Bears being unwise to spend all that money on Julius Peppers seems pretty foolish now.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Aside from running back a punt and throwing a TD there's pretty much nothing Peppers didn't do on the field.

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

double negative ahoy, oof

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

xp true but he'll still drive them crazy with semi-regular no-shows

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah if anything the peppers signing will blow up in their faces potentially down the line or over the course of a few years if he no-shows a bunch -- right now is v much the honeymoon period

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

it's always worth keeping an eye on someone who draws "hey look, he's actually playing hard!!" articles in the third game of the season

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

You guys would know more than I would since I only watched him every once in awhile on the Panthers, but it would not surprise me if one of the reasons he slacked a bit was because he was on a shitty team, a la Randy Moss. Before the Panthers fell apart he seemed like a total badass. Now he's playing on what seems like a good team, playing along with some guys he has to be accountable to and a coach maybe he respects a little more ... also, even his worst seasons in Carolina he was a disruptive force, and the Bears didn't really have that. If he draws double teams it will make it easier for Urlacher and Briggs to roam. I think he makes that defense a lot better.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

the panthers have never been worse than 7-9 since he's been there, and had three seasons of 11+ wins. you might be right, but this is not a moss on the raiders thing.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

They were pretty dang bad last year, 7-9 notwithstanding.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, and they were pretty damn good the year before--peppers' reputation did not suddenly appear last year.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 28 September 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

Peppers was also kind of banged up for a couple of years in Carolina, which was part of the reason his production slid down a bit.
