Yeah if Favre-Packers III: Sexting's Revenge ends in a horrible overtime loss for the Packers for the third straight week (which will completely kill me because that means the game will end at like midnight and I have to wake up at like 4:15 in the morning on Monday to get to the hospital) I do not know that I will be able to take it. I kinda need them to do this one for me, and for America.

However, Clay Matthews is apparently going to be back. And if the past two weeks have proved nothing else it is that the Packers are not doing such an awesome job of pressuring the quarterbacks when he is not there.

The screwed up thing on these helmet plays is that they didn't even call penalties on all of them, but I think that second one by that Patriots safety right?

That second one by the Steelers Harrison was dirty as hell, he pretty much ducked his helmet and aimed for the side of the Browns' players head. One of these bozos is going to do that one time and kill someone. I can't believe they didn't call a flag on that play. Harrison did kind of aim his hit on that first one on Cribbs, but it was a bit more questionable. Harrison has been a cheap shot artist pretty much his whole career, so no surprise.

I think that one hit in the Eagles/Falcons game wasn't really dirty as they just ran into each other at full speed.

It looked like that guy from NE was definitely ducking his head down and aiming with his helmet on both hits.

not only that, it wasn't really helmet to helmet, more like shoulder to sternum. Admittedly it's CLOSE to helmet to helmet, but the complete lack of intentionality should have prevented it from being a fine.

As weird as it is to say we're becoming so much more aware of the effects of all these hits in today's world thanks to the internet, sooner or later people will start caring about the safety of these players and demand something be done. I read Stingley's article in SI just yesterday and it was so brutal...nobody should have to go through that. At this pace I do think somebody is going to get killed on the field - even Carson Palmer thinks so.

All this kind of makes me wonder what's going to happen if there's a lockout next season...how popular will the NFL be in 2012?

was talking to someone last night who works for a brain injury advocacy assn, they do some work on football stuff (youth & college mainly) so she was up on all the medical & political developments about this. her opinion was: the tipping point is going to be more and more ex-players living longer with obvious brain damage because of improvements in all their OTHER medical care. usually these guys just disappear and die at 50. but if/when it become common knowledge that dudes who play football (esp linemen) become gibbering wrecks for the last third of life because of football, that's it. that and getting their brains donated to look at post-mortem.

Knocking people out is encouraged from pee wee football on up. Its a systemic problem that the NFL can't fix, but that doesn't mean that that they shouldn't try and start by suspending and fining idiots like Harrison. Those hits aren't necessary -- if he had wrapped massaquoi instead of launching himself at massaqoui's face I don't think the play would've turned out any differently

DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder says the only way of preventing helmet-to-helmet hits is to eliminate the helmet.

Otherwise he's going to use his, regardless of punishment from league officials.

"If I get a chance to knock somebody out, I'm going to knock them out and take what they give me," Crowder said Wednesday. "They give me a helmet, I'm going to use it."

After several recent helmet-to-helmet hits, several of which resulted in concussions, the NFL ramped up the punishment Tuesday. Three players received big fines, and the league warned that starting with this week's games, violent conduct will be cause for suspension.

There's particular concern about helmet hits, but many players are unhappy about the crackdown. That includes Crowder, who said concussions are a normal part of the game.

He thinks he gets one every week and often keeps playing.

"If I'm knocked out, I don't know where I'm at, I can't say my name, now I can't play football," he said. "If I get hit in the head and black out for a second and now I get back up dizzy, OK, I'm ready to go."

Crowder missed the first four games this season because of an injury -- to his groin -- before rejoining the lineup last week. He said he has been getting concussions since high school, but in six NFL seasons he has missed only 13 games, none because of a concussion.

Crowder said the NFL is "making a big deal about nothing" and cited money as the motivation.

"They want to save the receivers and quarterbacks because they sell all the jerseys," Crowder said. "They don't give a damn at all about defensive players because we don't sell as many jerseys as them. ...

"If they want to change football to a graceful sport, change it all the way to a graceful sport. Don't try to save the quarterbacks and receivers because they make the money, which that's what they're doing," he said.

Cincinnati at Atlanta - Atlanta are no great shakes, but I think the Bengals are swooning with this being Lewis last year. Question might be has Carson Palmer peaked and really is now in decline, hard to say...I guarantee if the WLW radio fans get their way they will run him out to AZ or someplace and then suddenly Palmer will be great again.
Washington at Chicago- The Bears defense is pretty decent, but the offensive line is pretty much in shambles. I'll take Washington, but it could be close.
Philadelphia at Tennessee- This is pretty much a match up of two of the best coaches of the last decade, neither of which have won it all. I think the game is a pick 'em, compare their wins and losses and they are pretty much the same. Both teams are kind of banged up. I'll take the Eagles, but it could go either way.
Jacksonville at Kansas City- Jville is just not consistent. KC isn't either, but I think they have more play makers so the Chiefs it is.
Pittsburgh at Miami- Steelers seem to be better and I'll take them on the road, but I could see them losing in Miami.
Cleveland at New Orleans- Saints but it is about time they start doing something impressive.
St. Louis at Tampa Bay- I took the Rams on the road two weeks ago and they got clocked by the Lions. I'll take the Bucs and the home cannons.
San Francisco at Carolina- 49ers. SF schedule kind of opens up for them to make a run if they can get it done. It be a big run, but I could believe 9-7, but probably more likely 7-9. 49ers are definitely better than their record. There would have been a flag and a subsequent fine. Although it wasnt a massive hit like some of Tatum's other jems (Sammy White, Earl Campell) it was a hit on a defenseless receiver after the ball had gone by (see the Brandon Meriweather hit on Todd Heap this past week). It wasnt a huge hit, but unfortunately Stingley lowered his head at the last moment and hit Tatum's shoulder pad.

And neithe Harrison's hit on Josh Cribbs or Robinson's hit on DeSean Jackson warranted fines. I believe that it was Harrison's hit on Massaquoi that got him fined, and Im ok with that penalty. Meriweather should be suspended.

I was gonna say, I'm no football expert but I can't believe people are picking the bears to beat any halfway decent team, they've looked dreadful this season and half of their "wins" were lucky flukes (eg the bad call against detroit that gave chicago their first win).

BOTHELL, Wash. – Dozens of local football referees used pink whistles at football games Thursday night. Now, their governing body may throw the flag at them.

The referees, who are part of the Pacific Northwest Football Officials Association, are using the whistles to raise awareness for breast cancer research. The referees are also donating their game checks to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

However, the chair of the Washington Officials Association Chair Todd Stordahl says the refs didn't ask for permission.

"They chose not to ask for permission, not to go the right route," said Stordahl. He says the move sets a precedent. Last year, a softball umpire wore a Hawaiian shirt. Stardahl says there are state official rules for what is an appropriate uniform and this particular association disregarded the rules.

“It sends the wrong message to kids that are playing the game. 'If they broke the rules why can’t I do the same,'” said Stardahl.

The decision by the officials may cost them down the road. Stardahl says the WOA may keep the pink whistle blowers from officiating two playoff games as a result. That means the referees will lose game checks.

Pretty Giants make Graves!

A few thoughts from yesterday...

Bears offense is screwed up, but heck it is still better than some years. Cutler has got to cut out the screw ups, but there is plenty of blame to go around. That offensive line is freakin' scary. There was guys in the backfield before the snap. Martz is definitely leaning towards the fool part of the line instead of genius. It took him nearly a half to realize they were not going to be able to go deep and then started running some short passes. How much do they trust the o-line? They tried to run a QB sneak on the 1 yard line, as they didn't think they could get any push from the line. Each of the Bears receivers also had balls that hit em in the numbers and got dropped, especially a couple of bad ones by Olsen on 3rd down. Your all sxxt, Cutler is going to get the brunt but the mouthbreather Bears fans that are calling for their heads are the same idiots that ran Harbaugh out of town in the same situation. There is NO f-ing QB this side of Manning, Brady or freaking Unitas that could do much more with the screwy setup. It's not like Rexy or Orton would have done much more, criminy they had these kind of games and would never even complete a pass on top.

Which leads me to the second part of this equasion....

DENVER BRONCOS, WTF? Oaktown dropped 59 on you AT HOME and freakin' Jim Plunkett, Kenny Stabler, Marcus Allen nor Pete Banaczak were in the building.

That being said, I guess those picks from Chicago didn't really help that much.

I just can't figure the NFL for nothin' this year. The Browns defense actually looked decent towards the end of last year. I wouldn't buy them clobbering the Saints, but there is a little bit of Aints back in that team of late.
