deion is kind of genius as a commentator tbh, but there's a lot of bluster to cut through

Especially when they have him AND Michael Irvin on at the same time. It's like a black hole of bluster. Though Irvin is completely useless. I do see the glimmer of usefulness in Deion, much as I hate to admit it.

i think you could make a good case that that's the worst nfl match up in like the past thee years -- neither team has even had a string of terrible seasons to make them interesting like clev/buff/oak
― J0rdan S., Monday, 8 November 2010 05:43 (fifteen years ago)
also a challenge for this week: can anyone find a starting quarterback match up from the past three years worse than derek anderson vs charlie whitehurst
Actually, they probably cancel each other out. So mathematically, there IS no game
― That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Monday, 8 November 2010 05:44 (fifteen years ago)
Old Man Hasselbeck will probably be back under center for Seattle, so I'll give them the edge. But still...YUCK.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 November 2010 05:47 (fifteen years ago)
is last year's week 16 match up of derek anderson (lol) vs charlie frye worse than derek anderson vs charlie whitehurst? i say no
― J0rdan S., Monday, 8 November 2010 05:48 (fifteen years ago)
also, are charlie frye & charlie whitehurst the same person?
WHISENHUNT: Derek Anderson says he's the quarterback, does that make any sense to you? CARROLL: Some. I've just met Charlie Whitehurst. He's here with me now.
WHISENHUNT: Oh, wonderful, we have to get these two together.
Derek Anderson takes a slice of pizza, sniffs it and sticks it on his cheek
CARROLL: I think that would be extraordinarily dangerous.

Baltimore at Atlanta - RAVENS. This is on Thursday night, right? Not that that makes a difference, but I think I'll take the Ravens winning by a point or two on the road.Detroit at Buffalo - BILLS? Depends on the Matthew Stafford situation, tbh. I'll finalize this later in the week.Minnesota at Chicago - VIKINGS. I hate picking the goddamn Vikings.NY Jets at Cleveland - BROWNS. Sure, why not. Cincinnati at Indianapolis - COLTS. Because...wtf is wrong with you, Cincinnati!Tennessee at Miami - MIAMI. The chick that was all duhhh, till the miracle worker showed up and knocked some smarts into her. Dante Hicks: You're talking about Helen Keller. Rivers was born in Decatur, Alabama, where his father Steve was the head coach of the football team. As part of a fifth-grade project, he had to make a poster about his dreams and aspirations. On the poster, he pasted his face over that of a Minnesota Vikings player who had appeared on a cover of Sports Illustrated.

Last week 10-3, for the year 82-48
Wow...this week is going to be a bloody one. There are not many gimme games to pick in this week's schedule.
Baltimore at Atlanta - Tough pick, but I will take the Falcons at home being that the Raven's defense is not quite what it was. This will be a pretty good game.Detroit at Buffalo- Lions let me down, so i'll take the Bills.Minnesota at Chicago- I want the Bears to win but I am going with the Vikings so either way it goes, I win.NY Jets at Cleveland- damn...I want to take the Browns, but if I take the Browns, I will know they lose, so give me the Jets (a total scientific pick).Cincinnati at Indianapolis- I'll take Indy, but I would believe a Bengal upset.Tennessee at Miami- I'm going Titans but this is going to be TIGHT.Carolina at Tampa Bay- whew...finally a gimme, Bucs it is and I hope they don't have a let down.Houston at Jacksonville- both teams are 4-4, Houston gets the press and J-vill wins ugly. I'll take the Texans, but I don't trust 'em.Kansas City at Denver- I could believe a Bronco bounce back, but I will go KC on the road (which really at this point is still a stretch).Dallas at NY Giants- Giants, but you have to think the Cowboys might actually show up at one of these games.Seattle at Arizona- ugly game...I have no idea, I guess Cardinals as they haven't lost by much in the last couple of weeks.St. Louis at San Francisco- I'll take the Niners as I cannot quite believe in the Rams yet on the road.New England at Pittsburgh- Steelers but I know NE will win this one and tick me off.Philadelphia at Washington- Should be a good game, but give me the Eagles.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)
Tennessee at Miami- I'm going Titans but this is going to be TIGHT
yeah, sadly, i don't think this will be TIGHT.

lemme ask you a question: do you actually watch the games?
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)
cuz i would hazard a guess of "no" based on your posting
some, probably about 1/2 every game (wish i could watch more, but too many other things to do). i have no faith in chad henne.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

qb is fairly important.
the dolphins still have a pretty good chance of making the playoffs -- you're fatalism is absurd
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)
your*
i vaguely remember the schedule gets easier at this point, but still we have titans and away games at NE and NYJ.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
i'm really not fatalistic about it. i love this team (still feeling the warm glow of not being 1 -- 15). but i figure our best chance to win against those two division rivals would be playing them at home. i realize we've done better on the road this year tho.

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)
I get the pessimism somewhat...I can be kind of an Eeyore about the Raiders but that's only because, well we stunk until recently...but also because diehard Raider fans are notorious kool-aid drinkers, and I never want to be all "WOOOOO" all the time because that's kinda deluded. There's a happy medium. You hope they win knowing they won't, being pleasantly surprised (or crying!) when they do. But I still watch every game and go to 4 games a year hoping for the tide to turn. I know quite a few Raider fan co-workers who I swear just read about the scores online on Monday and tell me how bad the team is...that I don't care for.

Jay Fiedler would have been the best QB in the last 20 years if he was a Bear. He won some games for Miami playing for the stache, more than you can say for the guys who played for Wennstache in Chicago. I think Fiedler's running seemed to get him beat up pretty bad and he seemed to stay hurt all of the time later on and not as effective.
Jay Fiedler would be the best Browns QB since Kosar.
It could be worse.

Let me second the Fiedler opinion up above. I'm a little biased, cuz I played against him in college, but he was a pretty good QB. He led the Dolphins to a few playoff appearances, was mobile, and played awesome for Jacksonville in their demolishing of the Dolphins in the playoff game in 2000.

I don't know the Dolphins for nothing, I thought Pennington retired. He's had a year to heal. If the Chad Pennington had a cannon, the guy would probably be one of the scariest QBs in the NFL, not that it matters for much. If Jeff George had a brain he would have been Johnny Unitas.
On another thought, I was thinking about Donovan McNabb and considering all of the hububb and controversy that follows NFL players, that is one guy that pretty much had had to weather now three pretty big media stinks and the guy hasn't really done anything but his job. He seems like a pretty low key guy, not very controversial but other people keep clamming on him as a QB and it becomes this lingering stink of a football story for weeks. What else does Rush Limbaugh, Terrell Owens and Mike Shanahan have in common? "What me worry?" Kind of weird considering the weekly insanity that surrounds some football players.

Reading that Seymour article linked upthread, I realized that the words "Raiders" and "playoffs" were used *unsarcastically* in the same sentence. No punchline, no rim shot. Still not entirely buying the contender idea but it's kind of nice to see it in print. I watched some of the Chiefs replay from Sunday and noted to Mr Veg, this is the first time in a while that I've been fond of the players as a group. I dunno, it's just a good feeling. I shall enjoy it while it lasts.

in continuing sadface newshttp://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-mcmahon-brainstudies
Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon frequently walks into a room and forgets why he’s there. His memory is “pretty much gone,” he says.It stems from his 15 seasons in the NFL during a time when quarterbacks did not receive as much protection as they do in the league today.“I’m going through some studies right now, and I am going to do a brain scan,” McMahon told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s unfortunate what the game does to you.“I’ve worked with some neurosurgeons and it’s a very serious thing, man.”
― I'm sure Ebay has some wicked pog collections (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 11 November 2010 15:58 (fifteen years ago)
He was on the Dan Patrick Show yesterday and downplayed it...maybe once he realized Dan would try to run with it, he backed off. I dunno. But he said it wasnt that big of a deal and that he's just old.
Cannot overstate how much I love McMahon. Dry, laidback, always with the tongue firmly planted in his cheek..he should be made an honorary Australian imo.

"You think it's your game," Flacco said. "You think it's over."
Not so fast.
Not with 65 seconds left for Ryan and White to work their magic.
"After they scored, we were on the sideline. We just looked at each other and smiled, man," White said.

That ending last night with Ryan was almost like a game in his rookie year against the Bears. Bears had them beat with like 30 seconds to play and then Ryan hit two lasers for about 50-60 yards and they beat Chicago on a field goal.
Bastard (for beating the Bears, I'm cool with them beating the Ravens).

I had the most awesome dream last night that Omar from "The Wire" (Michael Williams?) was a running back for the Raiders and we were all sitting down on the sidelines in lawn chairs drinking beers watching Omar get touchdowns. And we was a total bro and we hung out afterwards and let me drink scotch out of a bottle he kept in his pants (that part was weird). But!!! Best. Dream. ever. Fuck I wish you could get DVDs of dreams. I wanna see it again!

the last jets series was 3 of the absolute worst offensive plays i've seen in several weeks. i mean there was one play where the receivers just ran too far for sanchez to throw the ball to them so he just ran to the line of scrimmage and went out of bounds. what?

see if i want redskins to have a shot at the playoffs, i definitely should root for cowboys to stomp nyg but this is just not possible. i've had this conversation before in a number of different contexts. cowboys vs ravens, if a cowboys win means the pats go to the playoffs on a wild card? don't care. RAVENS. cowboys vs kanye west (came up as example when driving home from fedex one day)? kanye west. cowboys vs al qaeda? all the other nfc east fans in this conversation agreed, gonna have to go with al qaeda
― powerpoint coordination specialist, chicago bears (daria-g), Sunday, 14 November 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

i can understand why giants are losing this one too. they've been playing well, but certainly not at the level the hype had build to (did everyone forget Peyton totally blowing them out or Eli taking weeks to start completing passes?) and the Cowboys were playing bad but also not at the level the hype had build to (it's not like they're the panthers). i bet giants buck up tho and come out of the second half + play to win.
(oops, originally posted this in politics thread lol)
― Mordy, Sunday, 14 November 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)
the giants are missing a ton of key players, including the only receiver who learned how to catch consistently so far this season, plus they banned four loko today in new york so they're probably bummed

― THIS GUY (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 15 November 2010 03:50 (fifteen years ago)
merriweather is a decent player. he deserved his pro bowl reserve call up last year. i think he will settle into the nickel safety position that is basically a starter for ne. he has had a couple of long, fugly pass interference calls this year that have put the spotlight on him, but hopefully he will shake that. i thought he was pretty unlucky this time. officials are expecting a p.i. from the ne secondary, which i suppose is kinda fair enough based on this season.

Nearly lost in the Broncos' 49-29 rout of the Chiefs: the emergence of Tim Tebow as a passer and runner. Tebow's not going to replace Kyle Orton anytime soon, and he probably doesn't have a chance to do so, rightfully, until 2012; that's how good Orton has been. But Tebow ran for a one-yard score in the second quarter Sunday, then threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Larson in the third quarter, a long-awaited first NFL pass from Tebow.
peter king, the only thing "emerging" from that stat line is the fact that you desperately need somebody to love, and the next dude for you is tebow.
― potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Monday, 15 November 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)
come on, give tebow credit. those three-yard touchdown passes don't throw themselves.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 15 November 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)
Pretty sure I saw one throw itself at the end of the Jags/Texans game.
― http://tinyurl.com/koalalala (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 15 November 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
in that case, broncos should waive tebow and hoard cash for the coming depression.
just get down to the three-yard line, and let the touchdowns throw themselves.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 15 November 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)
I can hear McDaniels' voice saying that in my head right now.
― http://tinyurl.com/koalalala (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 15 November 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
kyle orton is projected for just under 5,000 yds passing and 28 tds and 9 INTs and peter king thinks tebow is the future based on a soft toss 3 yd TD pass and another 1 yd run.

Other than the fact you are dealing with the Snyd and the Washington Redskins does that McNabb deal make any damn sense at all.
Can't blame McNabb for signing, it is $40 million dollars guaranteed cash. Even if they cut him, that is a lot of money for a 34 year old quarterback.
I guess we now know the going rate for putting up with alot of BS as a big league QB.

i realize upthread i said "andy reid" and "genius" in the same sentence but i totally meant it w/r/t this situation. i think he's a vv good coach and creates some pretty excellent offensive schemes and vick is just thriving in them. and i feel good for vick b/c i think while he did this vile thing he also seems to have changed into a completely different person and i hope that's the case.
― omar little, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 06:34 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i said this a few weeks back or w/e but i really can't hate vick -- he did something really stupid & disgusting but he did his time & as far as anyone can tell has turned into a fine member of society -- also he's an incredibly fun player to watch
― thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 06:37 (fifteen years ago)
andy reid is a really, really good coach & personnel guy -- he & their GM should be getting huge praise for being able to create pretty much a completely new nucleus on the fly while also somehow improving the team? like, that's incredibly hard to do & the weapons on that offense are just crazy -- of course the vick thing as well
― thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, at first I wasn't sure that a healthy McCoy was a suitable replacement for a healthy Westbrook, but the rushing game has thrived, especially since they brought in Jerome Harrison. And we already knew about Jackson and Maclin. And those are just the offensive skill players. That defense is looking pretty bolted down too.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 06:47 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, not to mention that they had one of the best d coordinators in the nfl get sick & die pretty quickly
― thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 06:51 (fifteen years ago)
i guess i should say "pretty suddenly"
Reid should get a lot of credit for developing guys like Vick and McNabb and being the guy who helps them use their *desire* to be great in practical ways. I think him and Holmgren have a similar teacherly, fatherly quality that really goes a long way with the right guys.
― That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 06:53 (fifteen years ago)
And I'd like to think having a mentor like Dungy helped Vick immeasurably. I want that book to get written.
― That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 06:55 (fifteen years ago)
I'd like to think a preening jesus freak like Dungy didn't help Vick at all.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 07:02 (fifteen years ago)
Seriously?
― That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 07:08 (fifteen years ago)
Of course. It's better he go back to running a dog fighting ring than read a bible verse or something.

Insane sociopath convicted of animal abuse- how can I help him get back in the league?
Gay football player- Hrrrmmmm. I guess I'd be ok with that, if he was good, but I'd have to talk with him about the bible.

Andy Reid strikes me more as a "just win baby" kind of guy.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 07:12 (fifteen years ago)
Welp, I didn't get that impression o guess. Of Reid or Dungy. Or I'm not cranky enough this late in the evening to argue

OTM - as a Falcons fan its agonizing to see what he looks like with great coaching like this, but OTOH it's pretty vindicating considering how long I was a Vick apologist.

fuck this guy i am putting him on my madden team as soon as i get home tonight

gotta say i love that two days after signing that megadeal the headline on an espn sidebar news story is "Source: McNabb due just $3.75M if released"
― omar little, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)
yeah as a falcons fan who hoped vick would one day rule the earth, i'm still unconvinced. he always abused vulnerable defenses (although he rarely got as abusive as last night) but struggled against the good defensive teams like the bucs. i mean, so far this has been a typical vick season -- some great games, an injury that knocks him out for a few and the yet to happen rough game against complex, speedy defense.
fortunately for him there's no great D in the nfc. i would love to see a nfc championship game of falcons-philly in the georgia dome.

C'mon, typical Vick season? It's only 6 games, but there's no other stretch in his career where he's played anywhere near this well. That 62.7% completion percentage is godly for him. And zero picks, and only 2 fumbles? I wish we got more of this 'typical Vick' during the Mora years!
Also, I literally can't think of a single matchup I'd hate more than that. Falcons vs. The 53 Hitlers would go down easier for me. The Eagles always outcoach us and badly... I can handle the Falcons getting demolished by anyone else, but one annual asskicking from Philly is the most I can take.
― KyleP (Princess TamTam), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)
i dunno i think we could handle them at home. and yeah i agree, vick never played quite this well but i need to see him against an actual good defense and not that shit the redskins put out there last night or any of the other teams he's played so far.

giants d is actually pretty good huh?
― Moreno, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah the Giants D has been very good. Have they played yet?
― KyleP (Princess TamTam), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)
feel like the 53 hitlers would have a solution for vick
