Gotta be the Steelers, right? The logo's only on one side! That's awesome!

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

chargers

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

have always dug the rams & bills

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

I really like the Texans logo and color scheme, but I can't commit.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

who's the worst? texans or ravens?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:41 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta be the Steelers, right?

gotta be the steelers.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

the ones with the team name on them are pretty terrible

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

I like Chicago's (oldtimestyle), Colt's (minimalism), Bolt's (cartoons on saturday morning), iggles (awesome green), Titans (just really awesome contrast, bold, onfire T!), and lions (Atari-looking logo)

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

the color scheme kinda saves the texans. they really should have a silhouette of texas on their helmet, idgw they don't. worst: between the ravens, panthers, and jaguars imo.

omar little, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

bengals browns rams steelers

imo

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

steelers logo disgusting imo

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

the ones with the team name on them are pretty terrible

I liked the Jets' mid-history unis, before they went back to the original scheme. Well, the helmets mostly. All the green overload was unnecessary.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

metonymy is key here - love the eagles helmet but hate the falcons one

also don't like it when they show the head of the animal

dayo, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

tried to look at this from a neutral POV as if I didn't have a gut reaction to each of these helmets and ended up picking the...seahawks?

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

I like the old Eagles helmet better. That's my reaction to a lot of these - "well, the throwback is great, but..."

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not really a fan of the modern swooshy designs. have a soft spot for the rams helmet. hate to say it but colts is a pretty classic look. but can't touch cleveland. jets is by some distance the worst non-racist helmet.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

hahah

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:03 (fifteen years ago)

you know I might have to vote for the dolphins - because the dolphin is wearing a helmet. a lost opportunity for recursion though, so points off for that.

dayo, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

is the winged helmet look just way too associated w/ michigan for anyone to try it in the nfl? anyhow voted chargers just barely over steelers, vikings, browns (penn state and bama have my fave football unis/helmets in college and browns are closest to that ethos). chargers power blue uni = pinnacle of nfl unis imo.

balls, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

little known fact: the dolphin in the dolphins helmet is wearing a helmet, and on that helmet is a dolphin wearing a helmet

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

I thought the dolphin's helmet just has an "M" on it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

actually that's not true daniel :(

dayo, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

otm

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

"m" for mellifluous

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

feel like the lions missed an opportunity to go for some kind of classic british coat of arms gryffindor design

dayo, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

panthers worst. jags original helmet - http://www.profootballhof.com/assets/Helmet_Jacksonville_600.jpg. got sued cuz http://www.megathailand.com/images/JaguarLogo.jpg. logo they've had since has always looked like some half assed substitute they came up w/ on the fly. miss the old pats logo even though when i was a kid i thought it was a guy sitting on the toilet. hate they add the black highlights to the niners helmet.

balls, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

the dolphins the only ones to not even attempt to make the animal look deadly, though I guess that makes sense cause a deadly dolphin would look even more ridiculous than a basically happy dolphin

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

actually cardinals cardinal doesn't necessarily look deadly, just looks extremely irritated

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:19 (fifteen years ago)

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

ya but the criteria is 'would they be able to kill a football player on the other team' not 'would they be able to hunt lots of yummy fish'

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

ps birds are still capable of doing that because they team up and all attack at once

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

dolphins frequently ram swimmers to death with their beaks

orcas are also dolphins and are apex predators

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

hint dudes...football is not played underwater

dayo, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

it'd be safer if it was!

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

not if you were playing against the dolphins

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

apparently

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, our mascot would ram opposing players to death with its beak.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

if we're going that route the saints never made much sense as a team...wouldn't their m.o. be to allow themselves to get mercilessly pummeled by the other team, secure in their knowledge that the other team will burn in hell when they die

dayo, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

they tried that strategy for a while I think

iatee, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

Texans helmet looks like a modern gas station logo, maybe on purpose!

I won't vote Browns because I need to be completely unbiased.

Colts, Chiefs, Jets, Chargers, Packers, Saints, Steelers, Rams, Raiders, Bears, Lions are all in the running. Still might go Browns.

browns zero loss (brownie), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Chargers because their normal one is pretty good and the throwback one is pretty great.

C-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 03:47 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta be the Steelers

Would also vote for Browns or 49ers.

The ones that try to be a Halloween mask like the 2D Viking and Rams horns or the Eagles mimicking some sort of bird with wings coming out of the temples of a linebacker, those fail to me.

And everytime I see a Colts helmet, from Unitas to Manning, I think of an actual colt kicking backwards and leaving its impression on the player's skull.

http://tinyurl.com/koalalala (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

Y'know, I hate to say it because I loathe Dallas with every ounce of my being, but their helmet is an almost perfect design.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

The Falcons logo change was funny because it was a blatant part of their campaign to broaden their appeal to urban audiences after Vick came on board. There's a lot of lolsome behind-the-scenes stories from that era, like when Arthur Blank hired someone to teach Vick to talk more "white"

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 04:34 (fifteen years ago)

I love the throwback Browns helmets with the numbers on them:

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 10 November 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

i would be split between the browns, the cowboys and the packers

I think the Pats is my least favorite, but the 80s Pats would possibly be up near the top for me in a throwback version of this poll.

Yes! I totally forgot about those things. Only I think I used to get them out of a gum ball type machine. I think I had a bunch of those things. For some reason I always remember pulling the facemasks off.

My football team as a little kid had the Cardinals logo, but it was on a silver helmet. Always had kind of a soft spot for their logo for that reason.

8 brief polls to pick one team from each division, then bracket it down to a winner?

That sounds like a plan!

corned beef swag (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 12 November 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

so whaddya say i set up eight division polls and then we do four polls (afc east vs west, north vs south, etc), then one afc and nfc poll each for the conference, then the super helmet bowl.

omar little, Friday, 12 November 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

you should have seeds based on how the eight division polls turn out

Washington Federals helmet is kinda badass. Like a fighter pilot helmet.

Blitz helmet designer needs a talking to. Or whoever decided to call them the "Blitz".

let's do it like the playoffs (two wildcards, plus division winners per conference) that way a divsion with awesome helmets isn't short changed by say the NFC SOUTH

NFC SOUTH

i love the Nfc south btw (if it exists) It's just that i'm drunk and need examples

browns zero loss (brownie), Friday, 12 November 2010 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

when i was six my next door neighbors (whose son was then a linebacker at pitt) gave me a set of magnetic helmets. i would put them on the refrigerator in division order, nfc west on the left, then central and east, then the afc with the east on the far right. on gameday i put them lower down, with whoever was playing lined up against each other, then returned them to the standings when the game was over.

this is when the bengals had "bengals" written on their helmets, bills/bucs had white helmets, etc.

they are still at my dad's house. i need to find panthers/texans/titans/ravens to go with them tho

bobby s have you somewhere related your path to nfl fandom?

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 January 2013 00:42 (twelve years ago)

i must have somewhere. nfl was a thing for a couple years in the uk in the mid 80s, i think buoyed by the charismatic bears team. enter super bowl xx, every 7yo is a huge bears fan except precocious contrarian shut-ins. humiliation at school the next day, either turn away or double down, nurse that wound. fad passes for everyone else, i still have my pat shaped scar.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 January 2013 00:59 (twelve years ago)

lol

i was in a fantasy league run by my little league coach then and had tony eason and andre tippett (we drafted full defenses -- it was pretty hardcore, relying on street & smith's without the internet). i'm not sure who i rooted for, but i never liked buddy ryan.

wiki informs me that andre tippett has converted to judaism, which is cool

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 January 2013 01:07 (twelve years ago)

wow i didn't realize full d fantasy football was ever a thing. it's incredible that any fantasy sports happened before the internet. i remember doing fantasy soccer leagues in british newspapers where you had to mail or phone in your changes during the year.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 January 2013 01:14 (twelve years ago)

my first (and final FFB until yahoo years later) was pretty cool. had a team w/andre rison and esteemed rams RB robert delpino.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Thursday, 3 January 2013 01:38 (twelve years ago)

my main claim to fame was that i saw jerry rice play as a rookie in 85, quietly coveted him and took him relatively late in the 86 draft and saw him explode. also had joe morris the year he had 20 touchdowns and ken o'brien when he and marino would combine for 1000 yards whenever the lol jets and dolphins played

is def true that every 7 yr old loved that bears team. they would sell mini helmets (i think w/ pencil sharpeners in them?) @ my elementary school during lunch & i tried to collect every team & the bears 1 took FOREVER to get, everyone wanted it. when i finally got it, it got cracked almost immediately iirc
