77-67 on the season (meh!) 6-8 last week (boo!)

Chicago at Miami - DOLPHINS. Once again, I'm legally obligated. Although, if the Bears come to play like they did in week 10, it will be tough. DON'T KICK TO DEVIN HESTER!
Detroit at Dallas - LIONS. I know the Cowboys have talent, but I don't yet trust that they know how to handle a win and may implode one more time.
Buffalo at Cincinnati - BILLS. This has to happen. Of course, the Bills only win when I pick against them, so maybe I should go with the Bengals.
Washington at Tennessee - TITANS? Who the heck knows.
Green Bay at Minnesota - PACKERS. I don't foresee anything that would prevent this from happening.
Arizona at Kansas City - CHIEFS. We'd all better hope that the replay system at Arrowhead is functional.
Houston at New York Jets - JETS. I no longer hate the Jets. I am now indifferent toward the Jets.
Oakland at Pittsburgh - RAIDERS. Think it. Be it.
Baltimore at Carolina - RAVENS. Carolina is a trainwreck.
Cleveland at Jacksonville - JAGUARS. No hail mary this week, but increasingly good play from younger skill players.
Atlanta at St. Louis - FALCONS. These dudes is rollin'.
Seattle at New Orleans - SAINTS. Coming off a bye, maybe Bush and Thomas are back, maybe the Seahawks get 10 points. Maybe.
Tampa Bay at San Francisco - BUCS. This isn't wise, because it's an East team going West, but I still think the Bucs are more together than the Niners.
Indianapolis at New England - PATRIOTS. The balance of power is shifting back.
New York Giants at Philadelphia - EAGLES. I can't pick against them right now.
Denver at San Diego - CHARGERS. It's November, so it's time for San Diego to win.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

8-6 last week, 83-60 on the season.

Seattle at New Orleans -- saints
Tampa Bay at San Francisco -- bucs

New York Giants at Philadelphia - Iggles

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

I knew last week was going to be screwy.

Last week 7-7, for the year 89-55

Chicago at Miami - Hard to do, but I will take the Bears on the road vs. 3rd stringer QB.
Detroit at Dallas - Cowboys
Buffalo at Cincinnati- neither club is quite as bad as their record. Fitzpatrick will be hyped to beat the club the cut him, but I will still go Bengals.
Washington at Tennessee- Titans have come back to earth of late and the Redskins just got rolled. I'll take the Titans, but not as solid as a month ago.
Green Bay at Minnesota- Packers should win, but you never know...
Arizona at Kansas City- KC has been humbled of late, I'll take 'em in a bounce back.
Houston at New York Jets- Jets should win.
Oakland at Pittsburgh- Steelers but it could be a fugly game.
Baltimore at Carolina- Ravens definitely should win.
Cleveland at Jacksonville- damn...tough game to call, as Jville is sneaking around at 5-4...sorry Brownie, Jags at home.
Atlanta at St. Louis- Falcons should win.
Seattle at New Orleans- Saints should win.
Tampa Bay at San Francisco-How much do I trust the Bucs on the road? I guess the Bucs...but this feels dicey.
Indianapolis at New England- Indy is really banged up and NE looked pretty sharp last week. I'll take the Pats but they have been up and down over the past couple of years.
New York Giants at Philadelphia
Denver at San Diego

earlnash, Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

Give me the Giants at Philly in an upset.

there is nothing more annoying than people who hate athletes anyway pouncing on this Vick thing

ali-baba-boob-job-bomb.jpg (DJP), Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

this beating-dogs-to-death thing or this holy-fuck-what-an-amazing-game thing?

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

basically it's several cat-ladies-in-training I've sung with in the past who have decided that Vick's animal cruelty makes him irredeemable and why do people like athletes anyway *flounces off to practice baroque aria*

ali-baba-boob-job-bomb.jpg (DJP), Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

honestly i am never gonna be able to be okay with him (boo hoo he will be up all night) because the dogs involved resemble my own dog and any time i think about someone killing my dog i'm not gonna be able to be cool with that.
I get what you're saying though; it's as if vick gets to stand in strawman for all the couchmushroom beerguzzlin boyfriends of football widows. i still think it's kind of nagl to be like "yeah so he killed some dogs so what lol u mad" in the face of that though.
*flounces off to scrapbook*

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

not that i necessarily think that's what yer doing, to be clear.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah my mother in law is always "Ooh that Michael Vick is a horrible man" and she barely watches football at all. Like all you have to do is say his name and she's practically covering her ears going 'lalalala'.

I get it. I really, really do. But at the same time I find it a tiny bit tiring.

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not doing anything but being annoyed off on the side; I do think that if you do jail time for an act, you shouldn't continue to be punished in the court of public opinion for it. (If you do it again, then you should be punished even harder because you knew what that shit would get you.)

I would tell them that but I really don't want to endure the reaction, which would be nowhere near as measured or understandable as yours and would likely include some "all athletes should be killed" rhetoric.

ali-baba-boob-job-bomb.jpg (DJP), Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I've tried the 'Look, he was punished, he left football, he's doing community work and he's trying to make a new life, doesn't that count?" but it doesn't wash at all. Again, I totally understand, but...

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not doing anything but being annoyed off on the side; I do think that if you do jail time for an act, you shouldn't continue to be punished in the court of public opinion for it.

wtf kinda logic is this? would you say the same if he killed somebody?

iatee, Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

lol at "punished" in the court of public opinion = some people think you're still a dick. what a severe punishment!

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 18 November 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

that's wrong also most ppl in this case see killing dogs as more inhumane than killing ppl -- if he was drunk driving & killed someone lots more ppl would be all "oh he made a mistake give him a second chance" etc etc -- in fact there are a few dwi killers across the four major sports that most ppl who seriously hate vick couldn't even name

big smang theory (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 18 November 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

like, the fact that lots of america thinks that driving accidents are basically natural and everyone has DWIs once in a while is a big, fucked up problem. and that doesn't make dogfighting any less bad.

tbh i think people have heard the descriptions of what happened to those dogs and have been like o_O and don't see it as a mistake but rather as some weird sick behavior, which maybe it was. they look at stallworth, to cite a dwi death, and they see a pretty common mistake leading to the worst-case scenario outcome and sort of "understand" his POV more, even if they think he's a piece of shit.

omar little, Thursday, 18 November 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

eh I dont like this comparison, because frankly yeah donte stallworth did make a horrible mistake that will haunt him for the rest of his life, the outcome is worse than what vick did but the process is much more human and relatable. im positive that im not the only person on here who's driven when they shouldn't have and there's no reason to treat the guy like a malevolent monster instead of a guy who fucked up and paid his debt to society. imo its better to point out how domestic abuse is this amazingly pervasive problem in the nfl that is constantly glossed over by fans and the league alike...

Basically, if you hate Vick, you should also hate the NFL players who were convicted of rape, for example.

What Vick did was worse.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 19 November 2010 05:51 (fifteen years ago)

But even beyond the basic crime that Vick committed, his crimes were just so craven and horrible that it's hard to imagine him being rehabilitated as a person. It's easier to see someone moving on from a single act of rape/murder/assault.

I would be much more comfortable knowing someone who had committed murder than knowing someone who, for example, would drown several dogs at the same time and take bets on which one would die last.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 19 November 2010 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

ya but what if that's how they murdered people?

look i get that some of the outcry is cultural and that some of the backlash to the backlash is "your privileged lil mind can't handle how killing snookums isn't as bad as having your sister shot because you don't know anyone who's been a victim of violent crime but your neurotic poodle loving ass gets jumpy if you think of your dog getting run over fuck you" and i even see how sustained acts of violence against animals legitimately FEELS like it's somehow worse than a one time violent act perhaps mitigated by alcohol or abuse or whatever but trying to measure this stuff on some continuum where 1 armed robbery = 3 drowned kittens is a fool's game
this stuff isn't comparable. different shit sets different people off. Some people can't forgive teddy roosevelt for killing a shitton of animals even though he was possibly the most influential environmentalist of the century. i have no issue with vick playing ball, making money doing his thing and would never suggest that, having served his time, he shouldn't be allowed to do what he (clearly) does best. But i wouldn't wanna get a beer with him and i do hope that part of his sentence stated that he's not allowed to own pets in the same way that sexual predators have to stay away from playgrounds.

Onigaga (Princess TamTam), Friday, 19 November 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

is it a common current of opinion that this season sucks or is it mostly johnny fever riding that train? because this season has been awesome. i love that any team can lose on any given week, certainly over recent seasons with 16-0s and 0-16s. so much crazy shit has been happening. i dunno, i am enjoying and that's about as far as i care, but i am puzzled if everyone else isn't.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 19 November 2010 13:18 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, that's definitely not consensus. i've loved this season. i love the parity between teams, i love the shitty teams that are playing well (lions/browns??/raiders??!?!) and the former winning teams that are struggling (cowboys! vikings! even colts + saints secondaries kinda stink!). and some of the player performances this season have been amazing. in that last iggles game i can't stop thinking about that incredibly athletic shovel pass to shady. the injuries have really sucked and i hate that hurt players is becoming the dominant narrative in the NFL (i think it's important to bring up, but i'm sad that there's all these injuries and it definitely makes me feel sad as a fan). but there have been a lot of really exciting games. oh, another amazing moments; that devin hester return punt for a TD that happened a few weeks ago was also WOAH.

Mordy, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if this is really a trend or not, but it seems to me like speed and like gymnastics-level athleticism is really spot-lighted this season and I really find it amazing to watch a RB break off a huge run -- esp if it's because he's dodging and cutting like crazy and not because he just steamrolled a bunch of guys (which never looks as incredible).

Mordy, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

For me the season has been the extremes of epically entertaining games or extremely boring ones, without anything in between. Which seems kind of out of the ordinary...?

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Friday, 19 November 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

i think i like it more where there are a few elite teams rising above the mediocrity, but i don't think this season "sucks"

call all destroyer, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

two things that are at least to some degree possible that could derail this season in my eyes: teams not getting their shit together for the playoffs and those games been scrappy shambles, and the jets getting to the super bowl.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

i made a rule for myself to stfu about the jets for a while. it is not going so well.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that's sort of my fear--that the playoffs are wacky and random and no team actually puts it together.

call all destroyer, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, last year's super bowl was the culmination of two great teams playing really well and that is basically what you want.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

"even colts + saints secondaries kinda stink!"

ehh. Saints have the #1 pass defense in the league (and 3rd overall, to whoever was saying that there aren't any good Ds in the NFC)

Fetchboy, Friday, 19 November 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

But between the Saints still being in the playoff hunt and the Vikes and Cowboys decidedly not, it's been kind of a giddy season for me. I mean hell, Romo got hurt and WHIMPERED when he did.

Fetchboy, Friday, 19 November 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

sorta seems like theres a shortage of capable o-lineman? which is p vital to producing a good nfl product imo. idk this is based on teams like miami, bears, nyg, pitt, dallas earlier in the season, if like more than 1 guy gets hurt, fuhgettabtit u gonna get raped

johnny crunch, Friday, 19 November 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

xpost - you can't be too pleased about the sharpening form of hotlanta tho right?

i know that in general it's a given that most nfl punditry, esp power ranking and the like, lazily clings to the tired received wisdom of the day, but the assumption that the afc is so much stronger than the nfc is one of the dumbest parts of that right now. there are several teams that look nice now, hiccups aside, and nfc teams are notching some good interconference wins.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 19 November 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, losing to the Falcons b/c of a missed Hartley chipshot was a heartbreaker, but I still think we'll take the division. Our rivalry has a history of really intense games at the end of the season that result in a changing of the guard, so I'm holding out for it this season. Either that or we take them out in the playoffs.

Fetchboy, Friday, 19 November 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

the problem with this season is that it's making for a vastly unpredictable fantasy season for rosters, pickem and survival (raise your hand if the chargers knocked you out).

"I think we're due for another Raiders/Bucs style Super Bowl."

Both of those clubs had been knocking on the door for a while and finally got over the hump into the big game. I think if the Bucs like the later Ravens would have had a good QB, they probably would have went to more than one Superbowl.

What clubs have been in the playoffs that haven't yet won the big one kind of like that SB?

Packers - I've heard people knock Rogers on the fact he hasn't won a playoff game yet. McCarthy got them turned around quick, seeming to have the pieces in place for a potential juggernaut, but after the Giants knocked them off they have been fighting injuries and/or just haven't been able to get to that next level.

Eagles - although this club has turned over quite a bit over the past couple of years. Andy Reid is pretty much Bill Cowher at this point, in that he has won everything in bunches but the big one.

AFC

Ravens - kind of like the Packers, B-more improved pretty quick under Harbaugh and had a shot his first year, but haven't gotten back to the big game. Other than Ray Ray, I don't know of anyone left that was around when they won it all? Ed Reed and Todd Heap have been there forever, but they were not on the SB winning club.

I'd say Ravens vs. Eagles or Packers would be about that Raiders v. Bucs game again.

Basically, if you hate Vick, you should also hate the NFL players who were convicted of rape, for example.

― macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Thursday, 18 November 2010 23:01 (Yesterday)

What Vick did was worse.

No it wasn't. Sorry but Vick did something wrong, served his time, went bankrupt, lost his career, his reputation, several seasons in his prime, and all his money and everything vs Rofflesburger getting suspended by the league for less than half a season and a whole bunch of excuses made for him being a rapist, because what do most people care about women getting assaulted right? right.

daria-g, Saturday, 20 November 2010 08:26 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ This. I considered Vick a monster in human skin at the time all the details were coming out, but I'm prepared to accept that his mental rehabilitation is sincere, forgive, move on, and be wowed by his game.

agreed. i'm not sure why ppl need to 'forgive' though, i dislike plenty of athletes for reasons far more trivial than 'raped/tortured/killed dogs for sport'. have no problem w/ him being in the league - he served his time etc - but at the same time definitely have no problem w/ his having a stigma attached to him. perfectly ok to have mixed feelings about his comeback (or unmixed feelings - o great an nfc team the falcons have never been able to handle have maybe improved significantly due to the comeback of the falcons former face of the franchise qb finally devoting the effort to develop as a qb thx to a shot of humility that came from doing jailtime for raping/torturing/killing dogs, it's getting misty in here *cue mike + the mechanics*). ftr i hate tim tebow more than i hate michael vick. can i 'justify' it? no. i don't need to. it's sports.

balls otm with "it's sport, i don't need a reason"
people love to see great individual performances and in many ways that supercedes the individual... i tivo frame-by-framed through a lot of that performance.

I love the Patriots offense as currently assembled. Every guy does something well. Branch with the heads up roll for the first down ... Woodhead with the great draw plays and screens ... Morris is great on short runs and blocking ... G-E is a solid downhill runner ... Tate with the speed ... the tight ends. Love the way they assemble an offense.

funny sequence in the Niners-Bucs game: Singletary took too long to decide to go for it on 4th down, so had to call a timeout. Then there was a fumble just as they were going to a Game Break, and the announcer Chris Myers tried to stop the Game Break but was UNSUCCESSFUL. They showed a clip from the Atlanta-STL game while the fumble was being resolved.

Pretty sure Alex Smith would've been the better start against this defense. Tampa never blitzes, so there's always a spy back in coverage, and Troy Smith isn't a good enough quarterback to pick that coverage apart yet.

That was a really good move to make that INT, but Manning has just been making poor throwing decisions in the most pressured situations possible.

i mean i share most everyone's reservations i think re dungy's JESUS SAVES!! personal life but when it comes to straight talking football i think him & harrison are just great, like tonight just pointing out something as simple as how the texans CBs were using inside technique on the long braylon completion inside of outside technique

it's also great just to see just three guys in a studio, not like various numbers b/w 5-8 like you get from the other networks

"I apologize to my teammates," Seymour said. "I never want to do anything to hurt the team. You always want to protect yourself, but there's no excuse.

Seymour said he was confused by Roethlisberger approaching him after the score.

"I'm not sure why he [Roethlisberger] ran up on me. I just turned around and it was a natural reaction," Seymour told media after the 35-3 loss. Seymour said he doesn't remember Roethlisberger saying anything to him and Roethlisberger said afterwards he was stunned by Seymour's actions.

"I just said let's get ready for the extra point. It blew my mind," Roethlisberger said.

i believe seymour. i mean if rofflesburger approaches you unexpectedly, definitely you should react by smacking him in the face. i'm not joking!

Yeah to me it looked like Seymour had been jawing with a couple of other players immediately before and then turned his back on them. Rothlisberger taps him on the shoulder/ bumps into him and Seymour goes whammo, like maybe he thought it was one of the other dudes coming back for a piece.

But illustrates rule of thumb: don't come up behind a massive, angry lineman EVER unless pre-arranged and in writing

JIMMY MOD THE SACK MASTER (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 22 November 2010 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

feel like that might have something to do w/ how ryan leaf treated SD (by being a legendarily awful football player) but what do i know

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 November 2010 02:50 (fourteen years ago)

gotta love collinsworth advocating attempting to give mike vick a concussion

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 November 2010 03:29 (fourteen years ago)

don't like it on either. they have a real inches option with schmidt imo, or do something more creative with shady running or vick pass/run option

gotta say tho, i love watching an eagles team that can burn huge amounts off the clock and methodologically move down the field. + if you are willing to accept that giants are a top contender team, this is an amazing outing by philly even with the red zone problems

JIMMY MOD THE SACK MASTER (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 22 November 2010 03:49 (fourteen years ago)

iggles will be making their stadium green by adding wind turbine things on it, for power, so those are the turbines. the artist's rendering of this also had a giant eagle flying overhead, which i'm sure happens frequently on game days there

daria-g, Monday, 22 November 2010 03:50 (fourteen years ago)

eagle is def gonna get sucked into a wind turbine

johnny crunch, Monday, 22 November 2010 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

NE will probably do OK with the clubs that don't have high powered offenses and rely on the run like say Pitts or Baltmore, but I think teams that can really chuck the ball like Indy & SD can keep up as NE pass defense is really not that good. Jets might have enough pass defense to stifle NE offense, so I would say it is pick 'em against them.

earlnash, Monday, 22 November 2010 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

that has to be a fumble

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 November 2010 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

the refs should just declare this game 'guacamole' and dip some chips in it

ice cr?m, Monday, 22 November 2010 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

i understand that the ground can't cause a fumble but the ground didn't even touch the ball -- has to be a fumble right?

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 November 2010 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

"Is it my imagination, or were there fewer play stoppage injuries BEFORE they started making these concussion-resistant helmets?"

There was a local article on ESPN Chicago about that one basically that Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs and some players never switched to the new helmets and stuck with the old ones just for this reason.

Is Bradshaw eating some buttered popcorn or greasing up a bike when he is on the sideline? There must be some kind of Tiki thing with Giants running backs being fumble machines.

earlnash, Monday, 22 November 2010 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

he will never be able to replace westbrook as a pass catcher (ray rice is the new westbrook fyi) but he can be a really good rb & more than serviceable out of the backfield. like, philly has been dominant for pretty much the whole decade, and kolb + mccoy + jackson + maclin is arguably the best young offensive nucleus in football, which is a bit weird considering that the eagles aren't & haven't been anywhere near rebuilding

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 November 2010 04:34 (fourteen years ago)

I feel like this game either has to end on some insane play like the Jags last week, or on some astonishing anticlimax like the Colts game today.

this will be looked back upon as a great day for the state of minnesota and for football. and from frazier's point of view, the biggest obstacle to success for that team has been removed for him with braddy ice out of the building. now he just needs a qb and he'll be golden.
