The purpose of the Thanksgiving Day games are to give small market teams national exposure, right? Why the fuck does DALLAS still get a game at this point in time? In the '60s, sure. Now? They're on every other fucking week! How about giving Cleveland or Buffalo a Thanksgiving Day game every year instead!
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 04:23 (fourteen years ago)
are you drunk? i'm not advocating for dallas, but advocating for buffalo is insanity.

Well, it doesn't have to be Buffalo. Just that the purpose of the T-DAY game is to give a little team a big stage, which Dallas clearly doesn't need anymore (and hasn't for decades).
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 04:30 (fourteen years ago)
I am probably too prone to just being like "OK that tradition exists, whatever", but I have been operating under the assumption that Thanksgiving always includes the Lions and the Cowboys because that has always (since I began watching NFL = always) been the case. It is like how New Hampshire and Iowa get to participate in the primaries/caucuses first because NH and Iowa participate first.
The third game I interpret as NFL Network's way of throwing a bone to people who need extra cover from awkward family gatherings and for that I appreciate them. Although I use the 3rd NFL game on Thanksgiving less than I use the 4th and 5th NBA games on Christmas.
― C-L, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 04:32 (fourteen years ago)
there's a 5th game on christmas? christ, guys

Yeah, the past couple years that has been like a random Trail Blazers game on at the very end of the night and I have watched it half-heartedly while wondering why everyone got all passive-aggressive again, it's been pretty clutch.
― C-L, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

Last week 13-3, for the year 102-58
New England at Detroit- It would be cool if the Lions would not off these plotzes, but it won't happen so gimme NE.New Orleans at Dallas- Saints can play down to their competition, so I almost want to take Dallas, but I'll go safe and take New Orleans.Cincinnati at New York Jets- Again, it would be nice for the Bengals to get their sXXX together and have a decent game, but you have to take the Jets on results. Mike Brown is rolling up nickels in his office to get ready for a bonus payment for the new Bengals head coach, which he will probably get out of the CFL.
Green Bay at Atlanta- Wow this is kind of a tough one and a decently big game for both teams. I'll take the Falcons at home, as they generally play a bit better there, but would easily believe the Pack getting a win.Pittsburgh at Buffalo- Steelers should win, but I wouldn't mind Buffalo knocking them off.Carolina at Cleveland- Browns should win even having to go by Jake the Mistake by the Lake at QB, but they let a couple slip through their fingers in the past couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see how Cleveland does from here out, as they have a few easier opponants for the next three weeks that the club which beat NE and the Saints should be able to handle. In that, I almost say for Mangini and the development for next season (if there is one), it is an important stretch.Jacksonville at New York Giants- Giants are really banged up and J-ville has been finding ways to win. I'll take NY but don't feel solid at all.Minnesota at Washington- What a matchup...do you think Favre and Donovan will meet at midfield and ask each other how their season has gone? Criminy I have no idea who will win...give me the Vikings in an upset (sic).Tennessee at Houston- Both of the clubs looked pretty kick ass after week 4 or 5 and like turds now. Houston's defense is terrible, but they should win going against a third string backup named Rusty.Miami at Oakland- Oaktown's offense looked horrible against the Steelers. This shoudl be a fugly one. I'll take the Raiders at home I guess.Kansas City at Seattle- KC needs to win this one and I'll pick them to do so, but Seattle is a trap town and has been one for a long time.Philadelphia at Chicago- I want to take the Bears, but common sense says go with the Eagles. Either way I win...I'd believe that the Bears defense can keep Vick in check (heck the Giants didn't do too bad a job), but I got to think the Eagles are going to blitz like it was 1939 onto http://images.chron.com/blogs/askacat/hatcat.JPG probably sacking him a half dozen times.St. Louis at Denver- Rams seem improved, but taking them on a road is a dicey proposition still/ The Broncos defense kind of blows and this club plays kind of stupid. I can't do it, give me Denver at home. I still think that McDaniels won't work as a head coach (at least not in Denver). Tampa Bay at Baltimore- I'm taking the Ravens but if the Bucs knock them off, I'll be impressed.San Diego at Indianapolis- Chargers to win, they are rushing the passer well and have given Indy fits more than a couple of times.
San Francisco at Arizona - I like football, but you would have to pony up some cash and some beers to make me watch this one. Who knows...49ers why not.

New England at Detroit - pats but more like a 30-21 win than a 45-3 win like it would have been 3 years agoNew Orleans at Dallas - i can't see the cowboys winning despite the whole "watch out, they're prepared now" memeCincinnati at New York Jets - jets and their mojo meet the bengals and theirs, which leads to jets winGreen Bay at Atlanta - this game is gonna be awesome~ going with the falcons based on homefield advantagePittsburgh at Buffalo - steelersCarolina at Cleveland - brownsJacksonville at New York Giants - giants, i guess? jacksonville isn't bad but not 6-4 good...Minnesota at Washington - sheesh, washington i guess? i find it hard to believe that frazier can fix favre in a week.Tennessee at Houston - titansMiami at Oakland - raidersKansas City at Seattle - KCPhiladelphia at Chicago - i have always taken the bears and am tempted to do so here, but i'm not sure they can stop the eagles OSt. Louis at Denver - broncosTampa Bay at Baltimore - ravensSan Diego at Indianapolis - chargersSan Francisco at Arizona - arizona

Just saw Steve Johnson interviewed by J.A. Adande on Rome Is Burning and I've decided I love that dude. Poor Bills, for real. Fitzpatrick and Johnson are probably my favorite qb/receiver combo right now. I hope they only tweak the formula in the right ways during the off season instead of completely revamping it. The Bills are knockin' on the door right now.

There is no way Knox wasn't touched.
― C-L, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:17 (fourteen years ago)
Shut up on the not touched, Knox got slapped on the knee by some eagle as he was on his back.
― earlnash, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

he was touched
― overtheseas aeroplanes I have flown (k3vin k.), Monday, 29 November 2010 00:18 (fourteen years ago)
It was an Eagle with a linebacker number in the 50s, he slaps him on his knee with Knox two feet up in the air.
― earlnash, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:18 (fourteen years ago)
that would be kinda clever if they meant 2 not touch him but i guess it doesnt matter cuz he "gave himself up" ?
― johnny crunch, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:18 (fourteen years ago)
btw dont touch the guy who fields the onside kick would be an excellent trick strategy

― earlnash, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:20 (fourteen years ago)
The two games today have been pretty good.
I think Atlanta and Green Bay could have played for 8 quarters with no club really coming on top. Packers defense is quite good, but they are really hurting on the running game. Atlanta is quite solid.
I also got to say, I kind of like Brian Billick working games.
― earlnash, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

― old LOKO heads (forksclovetofu), Monday, 29 November 2010 00:27 (fourteen years ago)
bears D line was up in the eagles backfield all day and thats basically all you need to know
― ice cr?m, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:30 (fourteen years ago)
Vick had to hit on a freakishly perfect pass to make it close. Vick wasn't able to run over them, they held him in check for the most part. The Chicago offense didn't make the big goof that has screwed them a couple of times this year. I think if the Eagles hadn't of burned all their time outs before 2 minutes it could have been a bit more interesting, but Reid's clubs never manage the clock very well.
― earlnash, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:30 (fourteen years ago)
Bears offense also had two really great drives that ate up a ton of clock, one right before the half and then the one to start the third quarter.
I thought they played pretty well.
― earlnash, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:32 (fourteen years ago)
NFC West is going end up putting a club into the playoffs with a record of 7-9 or 6-10. I think that was the Rams first road victory in a long time.
― earlnash, Monday, 29 November 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago)
The Falcons couldn't buy a sack today, but I knew the game was wrapped up when GB left The Iceman almost a full minute to get into FG range. Atlanta's been pretty stout against the run for two seasons now, but they just don't have the pass rush to make the pass defense really work. I'd give them a good shot to beat any team in the Georgia Dome.
― http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipr-wS5iBv0 (Princess TamTam), Monday, 29 November 2010 00:40 (fourteen years ago)
I'm pretty sick of Billick, but Tim Ryan is a guy who I think deserves more attention. He did a great job calling the Falcons-Rams game last week.

NAGL by Peyton running around with his arms out going "WHAT THE FUCK" instead of trying to even kind of pursue the ballcarrier.
― C-L, Monday, 29 November 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago)
btw - j0rdan, was that the super chargerz 3rd and goal play? idk why not take a sack, it's a chip shot FG regardless so why not try to extend the play. or was that something else?
― daria-g, Monday, 29 November 2010 03:18 (fourteen years ago)
yeah it was -- but rivers rolled out of the pocket & could've easily tossed the ball away -- taking the sack just totally prevents you from being able to go for it on fourth
― J0rdan S., Monday, 29 November 2010 03:20 (fourteen years ago)
true that. i didn't pay too close attention to how far they were from the goal line there
― daria-g, Monday, 29 November 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago)
It's really odd because normally Rivers will throw a ball away as soon as he sees he doesn't have anything, too.
― C-L, Monday, 29 November 2010 03:23 (fourteen years ago)
sometimes i think, after a pick-6 or other defensive TD off a turnover, the offense who turned it over shouldn't get the ball right back. if your offensive series ended with the opponent's defense getting 7 points, you should have to kick it off to their offense now.
― daria-g, Monday, 29 November 2010 03:24 (fourteen years ago)
Philip Rivers throwing in slow-motion is HILARIOUS.
― C-L, Monday, 29 November 2010 03:25 (fourteen years ago)
yeah uh good luck chewing up the clock & keeping peyton off the field with that running game chargers
― daria-g, Monday, 29 November 2010 03:26 (fourteen years ago)
Obviously at the time it would have been seen as totally unloyal and a little stupid, but if the Chargers had kept Michael Turner and let LaDainian Tomlinson go a few years ago, they'd kinda be unkillable offensively now, right? Maybe I am just won over by Turner rolling all over the Packers today, I dunno.

― macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Monday, 29 November 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago)
lol, i was gonna crack wise to that effect but i was generally impressed with that stat and didn't want to muddy that water.
people are waiting for cassel to fail. he had a couple of high profile horrible games and a lot more decent or good games that went unnoticed.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 29 November 2010 23:37 (fourteen years ago)
Every moron on ESPN is reading the Steve Johnson tweet wrong, btw. He's not blaming god, he's blaming himself and saying "what am wasting my time on you for, big guy?" Which, in America, is bold territory for a professional athlete to wander into.
I can't say it enough. I love that dude!

― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 03:53 (fourteen years ago)
The worst record for a playoff team that played a full, 16 game regular season is 8-8. No losing team has ever played in the post season. There have been nine 8-8 playoff teams as of the end of 2008.
1. 2008 Chargers2. 2006 Giants
3. 2004 Rams4. 2004 Vikings
5. 1999 Cowboys6. 1999 Lions7. 1991 Jets
8. 1990 Saints9. 1985 Browns
Using the league alignment and scheduling instituted in 2002 by the NFL, it is possible for all four teams in a division to be 3-13 and the winner has to be one of them. It adds up like this, each team loses 4 interconferance games and 6 intra conference games for 10 total losses. Then each team in the division splits with each other divisional opponent for 3 more losses.I don't know what the conference wildcard situation calculates as, but on a divisional level, a 3-13 winner is possible.
5-11 is the worst possible wild card record, though it is even more far-fetched than the 3-13 scenario. Other than the 4 Division winners, the other 12 teams would all split intra-conference games (3-3) [though some would go 2-4 as well; they would not be able to win the wildcard], and divisional games, except against divisional champ (2-4), and then lose all inter-conference games (0-4).
― omar little, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago)
a 7-9 team winning the superbowl would be amazing
― iatee, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 03:59 (fourteen years ago)
possibly the only thing that could get me to care about this season again
also that chucky wasn't suggesting that the league should bar the NFC west division leader from the playoffs. there was no doubt in his mind! it was "the commissioner will do the right thing. here's what's gonna happen. they legislate other parts of this game."
― daria-g, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 04:02 (fourteen years ago)
tbh, I hope Goodell was watching.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 04:03 (fourteen years ago)
I wonder if Singletary is using the NFC West's shittiness as a real motivator in the locker room, like: "Hey, don't worry about what the rest of the league is doing. We just need to stay ahead of the Rams, and we'll get into the playoffs. Then we're only four games from the big one!
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 04:04 (fourteen years ago)
