you know what's something that's always actively bothered me forever? when analysts say that a quarterback looked a defender off with his eyes, or that a cb read the cbs eyes, because what they're really talking about which way the QBs head is facing

btw i'm w/derek anderson, who gives a shit if the dude was smiling. the reporter was a dbag imo.

omar little, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

^yes this. really hate when reporters/fans play the "how can u smile/laugh when the team loses" card

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ cosign. this is just lazy and opportunistic by the "reporter."

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

kent somers is the reporter's name apparently. just another hack trying to be a hero to sports radio callers citywide.

omar little, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

From what I have read, Kent Somers is respected.

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

it may have been a momentary lapse in judgment, but it was a lapse.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

omar little, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

well i thought what happened is he answered the question politely, took and answered a different question, and then got pissed that the reporter came back to it. don't blame him at all.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

Ugh. Jim Rome just came on tv and essentially called Derek Anderson a pussy for dodging the question. FUCK YOU, JIM ROME.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

"have you...do you even know how much i am being paid to do this? how can anyone keep a straight face."

"i was thinking back to that pro bowl selection. HOOO BOY"

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

Jim Everett was a better QB than Derek Anderson.

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, I think if my team stunk and my QB was yukking it up on the sidelines on MNF I'd like to see him called into account. I mean, I'm not a pitchfork & torches kind of person "RARR OUR QB WAS LAUGHING WTF" but I don't have a problem with the reporter's line of questioning. I mean, esp given the way the team played, and the fact that he was on camera. Anderson handled it like a 12 yo kid accused of stealing from his Mom's purse.

Square-Panted Sponge Robert (VegemiteGrrrl), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

Jim Everett was actually pretty good QB at one point, who just seemed to fall apart. They won the NFC West a couple of times, pretty much the last good LA Rams team with him, Eric Dickerson, and Henry Ellard.

earlnash, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

Everett was QB when Flipper Anderson had that amazing game iirc

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

Jim Everett is also another QB out of Purdue, who have put a crazy amount of PRO-QBs into the game considering they haven't really been 'great' in college football since the early 70s/late 60s for the most part.

earlnash, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

It's bizarre to me that any team would start Derek Anderson if they had anybody else at the QB position. Christ has Arizona sunk to new depths.

mc souleye (brownie), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:04 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, Purdue is like this weird QB factory.

mc souleye (brownie), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, I think if my team stunk and my QB was yukking it up on the sidelines on MNF I'd like to see him called into account.

yeah he was asked, and he said that the other guy was telling him something to keep him positive or keep his spirits up or whatever. perfectly fine explanation. then the reporter pressed it.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:10 (fourteen years ago)

i still say the reporter was a dbag, basically because those two dudes had a quick single moment and no one really knows what the context was. derek could have just been smiling like "can you believe this shit?" the problem with a lot of local sports guys is they're attack dogs w/a madonna/whore complex about the players they follow and they're quick to paint certain guys who don't play well not only as poor players but bad people, and guys who are incredible players can be forgiven the occasional lapse. i dunno, since none of us know what it was it was kinda bullshit. imo it was espn trying to create a story in a shitty, shitty game and if they'd caught peyton manning smiling on the sideline during the last seconds of the game against the chargers the other night they wouldn't have done that (and no reporter would have called him out on it.)

omar little, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

when i saw the slo-mo reply of the non-scandal and gruden being a schoolmarm about it, i was wondering wtf the big deal was. DA looked pretty miserable and barely cracked a smile.

omar little, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

Texans @ Eagles- This could end up being a fun shootout game, as Philly's defense is getting a bit bangged up. That said, I could also see Vick running rampant on them. Eagles should win this one.
Saints @ Bengals- Bengals might as well just forfeit. Haven't seen them for bupkus all year on TV, as they are not selling out (except on the field). Saints do seem to play down to their competition, but they BETTER be able to handle this bunch of clowns. Saints it is.
Bears @ Lions- I'm taking the Bears to win, but this is a trap game if I ever saw one as I could believe that Detroit defensive line could cause havoc.
49ers @ Packers- The Packers are probably fatally flawed with their running game, but I can't see Troy Smith putting 20+ points up against the Green Bay defense. Pack to win.
Jaguars @ Titans- The Titans have fell off the wall. They were dominating some clubs early this year. Collins might be back this week, but the Jags have been pretty spunky and they 'could' win the AFC South. I'll take Jacksonville.
Broncos @ Chiefs- I'll take the Chiefs. This game should be good and nasty, even with the Broncos sucking, it could be a fun one to watch.
Browns @ Dolphins- Hard pick... I'll take the Dolphins at home.
Bills @ vikings- Vikings in a nailbiter. God can be cruel and Vikings listen to no-one but Odin.
Redskins @ NYG- Giants but I worry about them playing stupid. Good thing they are playing Washington.
Raiders @ Chargers- I love the Raiders, but they don't have the horsepower on offense to complete. Chargers should win, only chance they don't is if they give up a couple of TDs on turnovers and/or returns.
Cowboys @ Colts- Damn this is kind of a tough one, as I think Indy is pretty wounded and Dallas is at least playing a heck of alot less stupid (see Redskins vs. Giants). Hurts me to say, but give me the Cowboys in an upset.
Rams @ Cardinals- I'll take the Rams but I don't know if I believe in them (missed a road win for them last week, believing they couldn't get it done).
Panthers @ Seahawks- Fugly game...don't care give me Seattle.
Falcons @ Bucs- I'll take the Falcons, but this looks like a big ole' trap game. Bucs should come out fired up. Color me impressed if they win.
Steelers @ Ravens- blood and thunder bluster bowl. I don't know who is going to win, give me the Ravens at home as I think the Steelers are getting banged up on their lines a bit.
NYJ @ Patriots- Either team wins and the rest of the NFL fans lose, as they have to be the biggest bunch of obnoxious fans in football
for both of these clubs. Give me the Pats, but I hope they both terribly mortal wound each other. Big win for the Jets if they can go into NE and pull this one off.

I'm on a roll, 13-3 last week, for the year 115-61.

earlnash, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

mc souleye (brownie), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:16 (fourteen years ago)

mc souleye (brownie), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 01:31 (fourteen years ago)

actually the team consists entirely of shawn kemp's illegitimate children.

maybe some franchises have a conspiracy to make sure a lockout happens in 2011 because they realized the best thing they could do next season is to take a year off, think about stuff for a while. maybe the washington redskins should consider a different line of work, or going back to school for a while.

The more I hear the Collinsworth/Michaels discussion of "Say what you will about Roethlisberger, but he's playing with all the guts in the world tonight" and the more he does some classic Roethlisbergery kinda plays, the more I am thinking dude is basically Kobe Bryant, where some people don't like him because he is by all accounts unlikable and (allegedly) rapey, but other people who are like "Yeah, but look how well he plays! Dude gets wins" because he plays well and gets wins, as if that absolves him being a huge d-bag.

I guess it is all an issue of whether you're supposed to just focus on the on-field stuff or if it's just not possible to appreciate the success of an apparently terrible person. But basically the Roethlisberger appreciation in this game is giving me a lot of LA Sports Talk radio vibe.

In this game Michaels also glossed over Stallworth's suspension last year by making this really oblique reference to like "An incident in Florida where someone was killed". I'm not even sure whether they don't want to talk about the off-field stuff because it makes them uncomfortable to talk about rape or DUI or dogfighting or sending pictures of your dick to some girl or whatever, or if they're very adamant that only the on-field stuff matters, or if enough of them are secretly like "Yeah OK but here's the thing you have to remember, that girl was probably asking for it" that NBC and CBS and Fox and ESPN just make them all swear to awkwardly dance around all these things. But when they get effusive about Roethlisberger playing really well, even when he plays really well, it just sounds so much like they're trying to force the idea that being awesome at football makes up for all those pesky rape allegations.

Also James Harrison, come on dude, no shit Goodell is singling you out. You asked for it, you dumbass! And you just asked for it again! Roger Goodell does not fear you, and probably at this point enjoys fucking with you.

C-L, Monday, 6 December 2010 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

But when they get effusive about Roethlisberger playing really well, even when he plays really well, it just sounds so much like they're trying to force the idea that being awesome at football makes up for all those pesky rape allegations.

yeah - this. it's like, you can praise his on-the-field play without even bringing up his off-the-field deeds if you are uncomfortable mentioning it/believe it is irrelevant/have been asked not to talk about it. there's absolutely no need to reference it obliquely, because putting praise in that kind of light really makes it sound like, "no biggie, dudes, he's cool at football."

THIS GUY (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 6 December 2010 04:52 (fourteen years ago)

you are probably asking a lot of employees (that otherwise can be relied upon to praise courage and making plays and the national football league) of networks to bite the goose that lays the golden eggs. if you know what i mean.

as a steeler fan i've been happy to cherish the love shown to a franchise that's been owned by the same family for 80 years (and been good to the city of pittsburgh).

but yeah the nfl is total bullshit. if ben were a raider they'd be soaking in his badness. it's just another storyline. it's not even hypocrisy because they have no moral standing to begin with.

ben is an asshole but good at football and no one with any interest in the financial proceedings is likely to call him out on that fact.

C-L, Monday, 6 December 2010 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

If I hear one more time how great Rofflesburger is/ how much grit and determination he showed/ how no one else in the league can do what he does - I will seriously punch them.

Great game - Ravens kind of gave it away by throwing on 2d and 5, but you have to credit Polamalu for that play.

flacco really missed heap in that game

johnny crunch, Monday, 6 December 2010 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

basically this is how nfl announcers break it down to an extent:

- sharing a chuckle that may actually just be a forced smile on the sideline during a game in which your team is losing: grounds for execution
- being just a little bit rapey but being a gritty gamer: hero 4 life

omar little, Monday, 6 December 2010 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

Also kinda wish NFL was a sport where the occasional fight wasn't an "Oh this is just terrible for the sport" moment for commentators. Like they become school teachers suddenly. Sometimes kinda wish it was more like hockey and you just let the dudes get it out of their system and go on with the game.

I think Dallas and Minnesota are in good shape for the short term at least.

As evidenced by a post a few weeks ago, Carolina's ownership is probably the most fucked up in the entire league. They're the Redskins of the NFC South. They're going to have to pull a coach up from college, because no one currently in the NFL wants to go there.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

feel like if you can find a team on the cusp of greatness thats obv best, if not that then having a legit qb is preferable, barring those possibilities its more abt the quality of the organization and stature of the team

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

Johnny otm: taking the Panthers job would be like wading hip deep into uranium talings. I think that organization is more screwed up on a deeper level than even we know.

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

the one thing about the nfl is that a great few drafts can really take you from nothing to something -- i.e. the bucs getting josh freeman, mike williams, arrellious benn, legarette blount (altho they didn't draft him), gerald mccoy, cody grimm etc

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:20 (fourteen years ago)

by which i mean i don't want to put too much into how unpromising the broncos roster is for the future, but shit

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

cowher will prob base his decision making more on the quality of the franchise cause hes a bad ass, gruden should be more interested in the quality of the roster hes getting

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

If I'm a coach looking to bounce back, I head to the NFC West. Even with the 49ers' front office problems, it's a division that's easily winnable with some key draft picks and a couple clever free agency acquisitions. tbh I hope John Fox ends up in San Francisco.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

That message board post does not convince me.

Carolina has had a lot of success, and management has generally been hands-off with respect to football operations.

Gutting the roster the year before Fox's contract ends and the CBA ends makes complete sense to me.

I know Mike Silver is just one dude with some opinions, but Richardson rated very well in his owner power ratings poll. This year Richardson was #3:

3. Carolina Panthers – Jerry Richardson A year ago, just before I unveiled these rankings, Richardson rocked my world by firing his sons, a clear sign of two things: He’s firmly back in the saddle after a heart transplant that saved his life, and he takes his role as the managing partner of an ownership group very, very seriously. At the NFL owner meetings in Orlando last March Richardson, the management council’s point man on the labor front, made an even more emphatic statement, opening a session on the first day with a fiery speech that had some of his peers ready to run through a wall. Recalls one witness, “Jerry said, ‘We signed a (expletive) deal last time, and we’re going to stick together and take back our league and (expletive) do something about it.’ He was practically yelling. It was amazing, and it set an incredible tone.” It helped that Richardson had as much credibility as anybody in the room. He’s a former player who has thrived in a small-market setting without whining about its challenges and has consistently stuck up for the interests and concerns of others. He’s also one of commissioner Roger Goodell’s closest allies and is the emblem of integrity and professionalism. For what it’s worth I think Richardson likely had a potential lockout in mind when he resisted the temptation to fire coach John Fox after last season and throw tons of money at former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who lives in North Carolina. With Fox’s contract set to expire after the current campaign, this thing could go a lot of different ways, but I have little doubt that after the labor war ends and a new CBA is forged, Richardson will continue to push aggressively for a championship. And for what it’s worth Danny Morrison, the former TCU athletic director who Richardson hired as team president after relieving his son Mark of those duties, has gotten positive reviews in league circles.

makes sense if you have utter contempt for the fans, sure

fwiw i dont think the point of that big post was to say "jerry richardson, what a piece of shit, what a terrible owner" - it's more just to shed some light on a situation that hasn't gotten much press (especially the acrimony between john fox and richardson) and to give a lil insight into a guy who is quietly one of the most important and influential owners in the league

and on that note, richardson's actually been personally calling PSL owners:

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

it's not necessarily going to get out of hand, i've seen too much of NE defense this season. if brady puts up another 3 TDs ok

daria-g, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

hahah how did warren get away with clotheslining that guy

daria-g, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

shonn greene is a pretty good back when he wants to play, but i get the impression he needs an occasion to show up.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

i was out running errands, just turned on the tv and LOLOLOLOL

I never thought I would say this but I love you Patriots.

Square-Panted Sponge Robert (VegemiteGrrrl), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

makes sense if you have utter contempt for the fans, sure

Sometimes you gotta rebuild

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

that interview w/ frank gifford was so sad. like, all I could think is that 'only an old man knows when an old man dies...'

Also, Tom Brady and all top flight QBs are really just superior decision makers, it seems.

Pats/Bucs

it was a real game; jets got shown for the clowns that they are

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 04:52 (fourteen years ago)

Aww, Danny Woodhead is so adorable.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 04:52 (fourteen years ago)

wow, am feeling bad for rex. did not ever imagine a scenario where that might happen.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 04:54 (fourteen years ago)

Hey guys, what abt an honorary Don Meredith thread title for next week: "Turn The Lights Out, Party's Over"

Square-Panted Sponge Robert (VegemiteGrrrl), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 04:56 (fourteen years ago)

for the last time, not kicking a fg in a blowout != stepping on necks

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

def saw some neck stepping, not sure which game u were watching

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

it's not news in 2010 that the pats don't put the backup qb in

i guess that's "neck stepping," i dunno

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 05:02 (fourteen years ago)

also what is "for no particular reason"--think they had plenty of reasons to show who's boss

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 05:04 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, if you're not humiliating your divisional opponents when you have the chance, ur doin it rong.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 05:06 (fourteen years ago)

brady and cassel are both at 23 tds 4 ints for the season

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 05:07 (fourteen years ago)

C-R-A-P, Crap, crap, crap, crap!!!

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/5761/ajet.jpg

earlnash, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

the jets im pretty sure knew who was boss, leaving in brady is just a dumb thing belicheck does

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

on the one hand you play so little football in a year that every snap is valuable. also you want to maintain a rhythm. but all that goes out the window if some fat fuck sits of brady's ankle.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 05:13 (fourteen years ago)

i support "was that the real game" as week 14 thread title

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 06:28 (fourteen years ago)

man, i guess i'm glad i missed this. any real reason to go back and watch the tivo beyond schadenfreude?

Lou Ferrigno (Hulken) (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

nope
