The super-speculative 2011 NFL DRAFT thread.

This could get weird if it looks more like a holdout for next season as April comes around, but let's focus on the positive.

First things first: THE COLTS NEEDS A KICKASS RUNNING BACK
Second things second: THE PANTHERS NEED ANOTHER QUARTERBACK

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

love the draft

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

this is probably going to be one of the most interesting years in recent memory in terms of underclassmen declaring

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

idk i think the panthers should trade a draft pick to denver for brady quinn

omar little, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

All 32 teams should have Brady Quinn warm their bench before he retires.

of the top 15 players on mel kiper's big board, only 3 are seniors

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

but really, fuck mel kiper -- here's scout inc's ratings

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:05 (fourteen years ago)

fairley has looked suh-esque this year (in fact he's the one thing that's keeping me from saying that the ducks are gonna route oregon in the title game)

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:06 (fourteen years ago)

Despite having watched a whole lot of football this year, I really don't recognize a lot of these guys.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

yeah lots of anonymous d linemen in this draft

robert quinn actually got suspended for the whole year i think

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

Has Andrew Luck actually said he's going to declare for the draft? I mean, we're taking it as a given.

Also, surprised Cam Newton is ranked #3 at the position. I guess I see it...he's a far better passer than Tebow, but he still seems like a guy who won't be nearly the pro player he was in college.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

luck has not no

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

i would totally take a shot on cam in the mid first round (AHEM DOLPHINS)

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

the offense that he's in is relatively simple & he'll prob have a slightly rough transition to the nfl but shit idk how you pass up that talent, ESPECIALLY if you're willing to incorporate designed runs into the offense -- he's loads ahead of tebow & vick & prob even vince (mechanically, certainly) in terms of passing too

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

Bungles will really bungle it if they don't grab Mallett, btw.

I agree w/ all that about Newton, btw. I'd love to see him at the Dolphins, especially if it means a return to FUN! Dolphins football. If they don't go qb, though, I'd want to see them grab Mark Ingram.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

Jacoby Ford STILL underrated.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

3. Gerald hasn't done much yet. Isn't the idea of this article to overrate dudes based on their short-term success?
8. Roland McClain has been awesome, especially considering the fact that MLB is the hardest defensive position to learn. What the fuck is he talking about? And it's not like they didn't find an awesome rookie WR.
9. Drafting Blount #9 would've been fucking insane.
12. The *last* thing the Chargers need is a receiver.

I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

Ive watched a ton of Newton this year, and I cant see how he is not going to be a great pro.

Adrian Clayborn from Iowa is a very, very bad man, and would be my top d-lineman.

Randy Moss' dog's personal chef (Bill Magill), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

Also, the Wisc o-lineman (Carimi) is the kind of guy you will put in at left tackle for 12 years and know that you are all set there.

Randy Moss' dog's personal chef (Bill Magill), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

you couldn't lose a couple more games oakland? at least carolina completely bombed out, so new england gets the 17th, 32nd* and 33rd picks. looking forward to those being turned into 15 2nd round picks in 2012.

*BIG TALK!

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 3 January 2011 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

I wonder how the impending lockout will affect the draft. Will more teams trade back for future picks? Will they go extra young?

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 January 2011 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

I have no real scouting thing, but if I needed QB and some other stuff, I'd probably go for that guy Andy Dalton in a later round. Don't think he is going to go up to the first round, but that guy played in a pro style offense not always out of the shotgun, he isn't too small, his arm is average, but he completed a high percentage of passes and didn't throw a whole lot of interceptions.

earlnash, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

I recorded the combine stuff even though there might not be a season. Last year the combine basically taught me nothing, but it was nice to familiarize myself with the players before the draft.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

cam topping mock drafts by mchsay, kiper & doug farrar

J0rdan S., Friday, 8 April 2011 02:05 (fourteen years ago)

both mchsay & kiper have the same top 5

1. panthers - newton
2. broncos - dareus
3. bills - miller
4. bengals - green
5. cardinals - gabbert

+

7. niners - petersen

J0rdan S., Friday, 8 April 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)

as well as nick fairley to the titans & tyron smith to the cowboys

J0rdan S., Friday, 8 April 2011 02:07 (fourteen years ago)

mcshay has bowers falling to 20, apparently his knee is serious

here's farrar's mock (he's from football outsiders) http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/The-Shutdown-Corner-Mock-Stockwatch-Edition-1?urn=nfl-wp783

J0rdan S., Friday, 8 April 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)

Cam Newton to Carolina actually makes a ton of sense because Rivera is the perfect coach for him I think.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Friday, 8 April 2011 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

In a strange way, no off-season football news has made the draft get here quicker. Usually it seems like it takes forever to get from early February to late April, but since nothing of substance has been happening, I forget about it most of the time.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 8 April 2011 07:44 (fourteen years ago)

I would take Clayborn higher than 16

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Friday, 8 April 2011 15:28 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Funny how Cam Newton's stock/reputation is dropping like a rock in the days leading up to the draft after it had been building since the combine. Now I'm thinking it's almost certain that Carolina passes on him, especially after seeing and interview with Rivera where he drools over Dareus.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

I wonder if next year some QBs decide to skip the Gruden QB show, because yikes.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

It certainly didn't do Cam any favors this year, just like it made Clausen look like an oaf last year (which may have proven true).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

Carolina is taking cam and they'd be stupid not to

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

Cam won't be Jamarcus, but he won't be Rofflesburger either.

I still think Carolina takes Petereson, Dareus or Fairley (though Rivera clearly like Dareus over Fairley).

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

No way they're taking fairley and altho peterson is an utter stud it doesn't make sense to take a CB #1 overall

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

They only way they don't take cam is if they make a franchise-wide pact to go 1-15 next year so they can get Andrew luck

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

Round 1

Carolina (2-14)
Denver (4-12)
Buffalo (4-12)
Cincinnati (4-12)
Arizona (5-11)
Cleveland (5-11)
San Francisco (6-10)
Tennessee (6-10)
Dallas (6-10)
Washington (6-10)
Houston (6-10)
Minnesota (6-10)
Detroit (6-10)
St. Louis (7-9)
Miami (7-9)
Jacksonville (8-8)
New England - from Oakland (8-8)
San Diego (9-7)
New York Giants (10-6)
Tampa Bay (10-6)
Kansas City* (10-6)
Indianapolis* (10-6)
Philadelphia* (10-6)
New Orleans* (11-5)
Seattle* (7-9)
Baltimore* (12-4)
Atlanta* (13-3)
New England* (14-2)
Chicago* (11-5)
New York Jets* (11-5)
Pittsburgh* (12-4)
Green Bay* (10-6)

Looking at the draft order, I figure Dareus goes to the Panthers, Fairley goes to the Broncos and Cam suits up in Buffalo. (I expect to be totally wrong, though, because I don't know anything.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

Green obvs goes to the Bengals, though.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

fairley has no chance of going in the top 5, might fall out of the top 10 unless tennessee takes him

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

No, you're right about Fairley. For some reason, I was completely blanking on Von Miller.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 April 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, that really doesn't make sense. I mean, I think Ingram will be a fine NFL back, but that's not even a need in St. Louis. (I'm secretly hoping the Colts defy expectation and take him at 22 if they can, but that's just because I want to see as much of him on tv as I can.)

twitter is whispering that he's gonna be flipped to the eagles for kolb -- anyway i think he could be good esp in a 3-4, he's so quick & athletic -- that said he obv has to get bigger & there is no riskier position to pick high in the draft than edge rusher, so you just really never know

"smartest qb in the draft"

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 29 April 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)

i mean he could be solid -- he's no star tho

david garrard prob isn't a horrible comparison -- high percentage, sneaky runner, could go 13-3 one year if the talent is good around him, but if it's not then you kinda look around and go "well fuck..."

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 April 2011 01:40 (fourteen years ago)

i think he makes more sense for the vikings than locker -- ponder is sorta the antithesis of tavaris jackson

i like ingram, he'll prob be pretty good but

a. didn't they sign pierre thomas to a long term deal last year?
b. they traded away two very high picks for someone who most likely will not be the best player at his position from this draft

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 April 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

ESPN is the fucking worst -- that was so fucked up

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 April 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

i think the best rb from this draft is either gonna be jordan todman or mikel leshoure

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 April 2011 03:21 (fourteen years ago)

or maybe ryan williams but i think he's a bit small to be an every down rb in the nfl

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 April 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

Well this was a fun, kind of bizarre night. big lol @ Baltimore.

Totally a homer perspective here, but I foresee Ingram fitting into a Saints scheme really easily (and really well). I like that pick. However, as much as I love Julio, Atlanta done lost they damn mind with that trade up to get him at #6. Christmas came early for Cleveland.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 April 2011 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

lol the falcons spent the equivalent of an entire draft on a #2 receiver who can't catch & has a bum foot

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Friday, 29 April 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

i wasn't crazy about this browns trade last night but after thinking about it- the browns really need to be able to stop the run, which they haven't done in 20 years and this Baylor dude looks like the ticket plus they gain two high draft picks

my cock could have convicted Manson (brownie), Friday, 29 April 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

brownie, they got falcons' 2011 1st (27th overall), 2nd and 4th, AND 2012 1st and 4th. That's freaking insane. especially since the falcons KNEW Heckert wanted to trade down.

Did they really give up their 2012 1st? I know they gave away the 4th but I can't imagine they gave up their 1st too, that's ridiculous and stupid and ridiculous

Especially since they don't even really need him!! Did they forget that they lost in the playoffs because they gave up a zillion points??

frogbs, Friday, 29 April 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

btw have fun with Cam next year Carolina!! I mean sure he has some skills but any QB could succeed at Auburn

Once again I think the Lions made the best pick - this is going to be scary

frogbs, Friday, 29 April 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

wr was/is a *big* need for atl, they apparently made a hard run at the bengals for their pick so they could nab AJ Green - and if that happened i would've considered it worth the cost! but the fact that cinci held on despite being offered something almost assuredly better than whatever cleveland got says to me that they're desperate to keep carson palmer

julio jones is a guy i've felt was destined to disappoint for a while now, but i hope he proves me wrong

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Friday, 29 April 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

Did they really give up their 2012 1st?

yes

my cock could have convicted Manson (brownie), Friday, 29 April 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

Wow, you're right; that's such a ridiculous amount to give up for anyone, especially someone who's not exactly a "sure thing"

The reason why it's so surprising is that the Falcs clearly got exploited badly on defense, I mean it's okay if they don't draft a defensive player in the first round but they've really handcuffed themselves here

Browns really made out on this trade, wow

frogbs, Friday, 29 April 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

Browns had to trade their 3rd round pick to KC to move up and get Taylor Baylor, but the extra 2nd rounder from ATL took the sting out of that.

Browns have like 3 d-lineman as they switch to the 4-3 lol so hopefully they can get another one in the 2nd round. Browns receiving corps is beyond suspect so rolling the die on Jones would not have disappointed me either.

my cock could have convicted Manson (brownie), Friday, 29 April 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

Once again I think the Lions made the best pick - this is going to be scary

Trent Dilfer is probably the most annoying man on television.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 April 2011 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

i couldn't tell which analysis there was worse -- dilfer going "he doesn't make plays when it REALLY matters" or jaws going "hey you just have to trust minnesota's front office! they really like this guy! he's going to be great!"

Trent's intense and irrational hatred of placekickers rubs me the wrong way every time it's brought up. Sure, kickers are a different kind of player, but they're not absolutely worthless. I think a kicker snaked his girlfriend once or something.

feel like jordan todman on the chargers is a nice fit

Man, that Jimmy Wilson story was WOAH.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 April 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

lol @ Peter King saying that "9 out of 10" GMs would have accepted the deal the Falcons gave them

uhhh name one who wouldn't!?

frogbs, Monday, 2 May 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

mike brown.

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Monday, 2 May 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

because he didn't.

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Monday, 2 May 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

holy shit I got to check my facts, did they really offer him the same deal??

never mind...Peter King is right!!!

frogbs, Monday, 2 May 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

i mean the Bengals did have a more valuable pick but that's so much value; i wonder how many GMs would give up a #1 overall (seems like it would be correct overall)

maybe Falcons are just banking on the apocalypse, in which case more power to em

frogbs, Monday, 2 May 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure they tried making offers to the Broncos & Bills too.

It's not really THAT much value... two 4th rounders, okay. One second rounder, eh, alright. Two firsts - one at #27, and next year's is likely to be in the 20s as well. You're not getting any AJ Green caliber players with any of those picks. It's actually a pretty reasonable deal for a top-8 pick, and it's only worth objecting to if you don't like the player they take (I get the feeling that I might be drinking the Julio kool-aid soon enough)

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Monday, 2 May 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

i guarantee you that the cardinals would've turned down this trade offer to stay & pick patrick petersen

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 May 2011 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure the browns would've turned this trade down if Petersn was still available
