49ers at Chargers (TNF)- Chargers but I think the Niners could give them a decent game.Browns at Bengals - Browns, the Bengals are in the land of the lost. I don't get some of Cincy fans thinking dumping Carson Palmer would be the 'fix' for what is wrong. Oh well, if they go that way I'm sure Minnesota or some other borderline decent club that needs a somewhat competant QB who I wouldn't suprise all the sudden gets very good again will be happy. Good luck trying to win with some dregs or bringing back Kitna or some other damn Mike Brown foolishness.Redskins at Cowboys - Cowboys I suppose.Texans at Titans- Who knows...both of these clubs fell of the wall hard about 5 weeks into the season and haven't got their mojo back. Give me the Texans, as they might be able to build a 2 score lead early.Jaguars at Colts- the Jville and Indy games have been really physicial over the past years. I'm taking the Colts at home, but I won't be suprised if the Jags win. Chiefs at Rams- I'll take the Chiefs even if the Brodster is the qb.Bills at Dolphins- I'll take the Dolphins, but if the Bills get up a td or two early they will win.Eagles at Giants- Giants, as the Eagles defense is getting knicked up.Lions at Buccaneers- Bucs but the Lions could make this one interesting.Saints at Ravens- It's a bigger game for the Ravens, as I think NO is probably a bit safer for the wild card than the rest. I'm taking the Ravens as they are due to win a big one. If they lose this one, I don't know. It will be interesting to see how NO does in this one.Cardinals at Panthers- Ugly and Fugly -- give me Arizona.Falcons at Seahawks- Falcons but Seattle can be trap city.Broncos at Raiders- Broncos are making the Bengals look like the Pats in the effort dept., give me the Silver and Black to win.Jets at Steelers- Jets are going down in flames. Steelers are pretty banged up but it is much funnier watching the Jets fall apart. Pittsburgh to win.Packers at Patriots (SNF) - Pats, until proven wrong...which I don't know can happen at this point.Bears at Vikings (MNF)- I'm taking the Bears, but this one could get weird.
Last week 11-5, for the year 139-69
It was a pretty weird start to the year on who was any good, but really, it has gotten much more predictable for the last 4-6 weeks.

A new kind of NFL scoring: adding music to TV game coverage.
Don't laugh. Fox will formally announce today that it will do that on its regional Arizona Cardinals-Carolina Panthers game Sunday (1 p.m. ET) after an unannounced test on last week's Seattle Seahawks-San Francisco 49ers game. Fox Sports President Eric Shanks on whether such soundtracks will pop up on Fox's upcoming Super Bowl: "It's a possibility."
Given you're bombarded with mood-prompting music in TV shows, ads and movies — and in stadiums and arenas during games — it's seems inevitable that sideline shots of, say, Bill Belichick could end up being accentuated by Lady Gaga's Poker Face. That's Jay-Z's I Know What Girls Like taking us inside the heads of kickers who just made game-winning field goals. Cue It's Raining Men as players run out of tunnels. Everything going wrong for a team? Who you gonna call?Ghostbusters!
Fox's Shanks says game playlists could include famous artists — "the rule is you use it just once and don't edit it" — but will also draw on original medleys. For Sunday's game, Fox has 15 new cuts from James Cardoni, who has composed music for the prime-time show CSI.
But having cuts you'd hear in movies, like spooky chords when babysitters find out the calls are coming from inside the house, is one thing. Knowing when to use them is another. "This is all in the execution," Shanks says. "Just like music in movies, you have to use it at the right times. And imagine trying to score a movie the first time you're seeing it." Plus, he says, announcers during last week's test game needed to get their groove on "to get a feel whether to keep talking or let the music build the suspense or drama for the next play."
Asked if NFL games might cross-promote Fox movies by using their theme songs, Shanks says "We haven't gotten that far, but that's really interesting. Have an NFL '70s night when American Idol has a '70s night? Maybe there's cross-promotion there." And purists really shouldn't write off this idea until, say, they see a holding replay set to Your Cheatin' Heart.

I think it is time to buy those TV rights to the CFL now.
Either that or Direct TV will have an NFL package where you can pay to turn off all of that bullshit and just have a game, no announcers just the game.
― earlnash, Friday, 17 December 2010 23:27 (fourteen years ago)
this is maybe a bannable offense, but . . . the nfl is pretty bullshit already without the 18 musically enhanced games.
i mean, it's very rich people charging absurd money to see disposable reprobates try to maim each other, plus some other stuff.
the only game i *really* wanted to see this season was pats-bears because of the snow. which turned into a joke and wasn't on in my area anyway.
i guess it's pretty much over now, because everyone has new stadiums, but the whole 'we'll leave town (omg!) if the taxpayer doesn't build a sweet new stadium for eight events a year' thing was execrable.
the football-as-warfare and players-(i.e. white qbs)-as-heroes is fucked up too. commentators wondering aloud 'how did he have the *courage* to make that pass?'
but most of all: it's boring.
parity is good in that the nfl has no yankees/red sox, but . . . it's left us with a host of mediocre teams that through good fortune go 9-7 one year then 4-12 the next.
have you been to a game lately? it's four hours of hanging out with 70,000 drunk, bloodthirsty assholes watching 20 minutes of actual action between timeouts. (don't get me wrong -- i'm a drunk asshole right now, i just wouldn't want to be around that many others of us with any regularity.)
for me, television coverage crossed a line a few years ago when they introduced the commercial break after the score *and* the commercial break after the kickoff. i guess it's handy that you can read a magazine, occasionally glance up at the game and not miss anything, but you could also do that watching sandra lee.
i think the great thing about the nfl was that it once *commanded* sundays, with a notable adjunct on monday night. (at one point when i was a kid, my bedtime was 10pm -- except on monday, when i could stay up until halftime.) now there are thursday games on some bullshit network no one gets plus sunday night plus a no-longer-choice game monday night etc.
i want to like it. i've followed it since i could walk -- i learned the multiplication table for sevens before three, four and six because of football. but it kind of sucks ass.

Paying money to watch the NFL is dumb.
Guess you're not a baseball fan or a basketball fan either?
sure, but this has nothing to do with why the game is good. Put the game on mute and play some tunes.
Nonsense! The Patriots, Ravens, Steelers, Chargers, Colts, Eagles, Giants, and Packers have either been good or great for like a decade!
have you been to a game lately?
NFL is much better on TV, I agree.
― I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:14 (fourteen years ago)
yeah but there's (slightly) more rationale for a facility that will host 40/81 games in a year.
the pats have been good. the steelers and colts have been fairly good. the others have been on the good side of up and down.
which of the week 14 games were you excited by (seriously) ahead of time? some of them *were* actually exciting. but i don't think the tight jax-raiders or tampa-skins games were an example of the nfl's greatness.
haha i guess i still care enough to reiterate: lol skins
― mookieproof, Saturday, 18 December 2010 02:25 (fourteen years ago)
mookie, tivo increased my enjoyment of the NFL like 500%no pregame. no threeandouts. no halftime. if the game feels like it's in a rut, i jump forward fifteen minutes. slomo recaps of any and every play. a game takes about an hour and a half to two hours to watch. i don't really like to watch football any other way these days, except in a large group.

honestly i get your frustration but saying something like this makes you sound like you don't even like the idea of football--it's a really complex, strategic, interesting game and it's by far the most intellectually rigorous of the major sports imo
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 18 December 2010 04:49 (fourteen years ago)
I can't argue with Mookie. Speaking for myself, I know I don't take the games very seriously. I've never looked up to a football player. I've never had a team that I favored or called my own. I do turn my nose up at the "fans" in the Sunday commercials who don their jerseys for game day. I work with people who every Monday, rag each other on how "you" did in "your" loss and how "we" got screwed by the refs. It's even more comical because I work in Little Rock, Ark., and those we's and you's are referring to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Washington Redskins.
Mookie's right about the owners hijacking a town into building a stadium with tax dollars. I'd argue maybe that it's like college football where the coaches make more money than the math professors, because they bring in the revenue. The highest-paid public employee in the state of Arkansas is Bobby Petrino. Why? Well, he definitely had a better year than the Director of the Agricultural Economic Commission. When the stadiums don't live up their standards, or the team moves, or the roofs start caving in, then you have a problem.
I used to be a huge baseball fan until the '94 strike pretty much killed my passion. Now all I see are wild-card winners, shattered records that mean nothing and hot dog races. It'll be really interesting to see how the bullshit holds after the NFL lockout next year.
P.S. The NFL hasn't taken a dime from me. If suckas want to paint themselves up silly and go stand in the cold for $75, I'm libertairan enough to say have at it to them.

i understand what you mean, i think. and the intellectual demand *is* there, wonderlic aside, in the complexity of modern football schemes.
what i was thinking of when i wrote that was pittsburgh te heath miller nearly being decapitated (no call) against the ravens while pittsburgh qb ben rothlisberger led the steelers to a late victory. i'm a steelers fan.

Speaking for myself: it's a lot easier to be a football fan when all your friends are hipsters who hate sports. My sporting life is basically between me and my television (and the internet), and it's pretty sweet that way.
― I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Saturday, 18 December 2010 05:34 (fourteen years ago)
My favorite thing about the NFL is that I spend a football Sunday in any number of different ways and be totally happy. I can be happy idly watching the game while doing homework or something and only really paying attention when something important is happening. I can be happy watching it with full emotional investment in one particular team, completely throwing all logic and reason aside for the single focus of "I want the Packers to win". (If Rodgers is out, I will not be doing this on Sunday, though...) I can be (and usually am) happy watching an interesting game between teams I enjoy watching for a particular player or style of play without any regard for who wins or loses. I can watch two or three games at once, if the TV setup permits, and whatever else is going on in my life goes away for a while. Sometimes I try and watch a single game really intently to learn more about football strategy. Sometimes I come here and just try and make jokes. Sometimes I watch with people. Ideally they are from the state of Wisconsin.

I once had a conversation with a guy who was doing the whole Noam Chomsky 'poindexter' style 'I don't understand why people root for teams why do people like sports what do people say *we* when referring to a team that they've never played on' etc etc. I know that isn't exactly what you're saying but I think it's pretty obvious why people root for teams, even if they aren't teams playing in the city they live in. For one, people root for teams for a variety of reasons -- I root for Philly teams even tho I live in NY and work in CT. Why? Because I am originally from Philly. But also people like to feel a part of a larger group of people and rooting for a team gives you that feeling. It's nice to look at the reprobates screaming like lunatics (on twitter or IRL) and think 'hey, these are my kind of reprobates.' I won't speak for anyone but myself but I feel constantly alienated from other people in so many areas of my life it's nice to have one thing, one day of the week, where I can root for a group of talented exceptional athletes, hang out on ILNFL with people who appreciate these games, and feel like I'm a part of something bigger than myself. It's not a totally different feeling from listening to pop radio, or watching a sitcom with a laugh track. It's silly and utterly meaningless, but it's nice to experience anyway.
Also, and I know you're not really ragging on sports in general, but I want to point out that human beings have been watching each other play sports basically since we had human beings. There's something in our brains that lights up when a guy makes an amazing catch or, I guess, throws a discus really far, or probably brings down a mammoth with only four spears or something like that.
My only complaint really about the NFL atm is it seems so inundated with penalties and refs measuring distance and commercial breaks that so many games have absolutely no rhythm and are really boring to watch. I think it's a problem that has become worse and worse every year and I understand that the league is trying to protect players and stuff but I think primarily the NFL rules book needs to be totally rewritten to run smoothly and intuitively.

in all seriousness, though, mookie, I've been to about 12 NFL games, and i've never really experienced that. It might depend on the city and the fanbase, but most of the people in the seats around me have generally been agreeable, or at worst, annoying, but I've never run into the 'rampant idiotic drunkenness' at games.
Even Dolphin-Jet games, which I've seen multiple fistfights at, haven't gotten to Italian soccer league levels. I personally love going to football games. at least, in outdoor stadiums, in nice weather.
― Bitch, it cold outside!!! BURR (San Te), Saturday, 18 December 2010 16:50 (fourteen years ago)
there's a tivo balance that's necessary to enjoy a game. It's not like i can watch it a day later, but if you give the game an hour to warm up and jump in, you generally finish right around the same time as the rest of the world.

I'd feel like the biggest dumbass in the world sitting there getting all hyped up over a football game that ALREADY ENDED and yet I'm sitting there getting upset about the outcome INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT THE SCORE. BECAUSE IT IS ALREADY OVER.
― daria-g, Sunday, 19 December 2010 10:28 (fourteen years ago)
well, there are definitely more like me, but my reasoning for doing it is because unlike other sports, I get to see my team play precisely once per week. So each game is an event. Missing a game feels shitty because then I have to wait another week for the next one, so I like to replicate watching it live the best I can, on delay. so I can at least see how things unfolded and almost feel like I watched it live.
Yea, I could watch the taped game after I already know what happened too, but that's so effing boring.
I tend to get busy with obligations and activities unfortunately, so this becomes necessary more and more frequently over the years.
It does kinda suck, but I find just getting the score to be far less satisfying. As opposed to basketball/baseball, when back when I was a fan of either, if I missed the game, I missed it, because there are so goddamned many of them.
― Bitch, it cold outside!!! BURR (San Te), Sunday, 19 December 2010 14:31 (fourteen years ago)
IT's funny, i think it was the Baltimore/Texas game last week. I was way behind on the ILNFL thread and toward the bottom, I started seeing all these O SHIT! type posts. The game was on in the other room, delayed on the DVR by about five minutes. Right around the time I got to those comments, I heard the crowd going wild. So I got up, rewound it a few, and saw Texas tie the game.
― http://tinyurl.com/ccccccccccccccccc (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 19 December 2010 16:32 (fourteen years ago)
My friend used to have a television that I knew was slightly delayed (at least 3-5 seconds) behind mine, because we'd often be watching while we were on AOL Instant Messenger and he'd get mad that I spoiled a play before he saw it.
So then I used to enjoy typing shit liek "OMG FUMBLE" or "AWW FUCK INT" and he'd be faked out until he caught up and realized it didn't really happen.

Joe & Troy

I wish I could combine Nantz/Aikman and launch Buck/Simms into space, but NFL rules prohibit it.

Got to give Rexy some propts on that 4th & 1 call. I thought it was a bit crazy going for it being 5:32 to go in the third quarter on a gimme field goal. Sanchez and the Jet running back really sold the hand off quite well.
― earlnash, Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:11 (fourteen years ago)
Hello Jets - stay in bounds dummy! That is 3 plays on this drive, well over a minute on the clock that you have left on by not just going down and going out of bounds. LT you know better. Who knows with Krylon Edwards.

The out of bounds plays were on the players, but they need to be reminded to stay in bounds.
Throwing the ball there is on the offensive coordinator and head coach.
Jets played pretty well. I think it came down that Troy P. wasn't playing safety today. The Steelers D didn't play bad, but Polamalu is just one of those guys that is really hard to stop and generally makes a few plays a game. You can tell when he isn't around.

this is early season patriots, where they were getting outplayed all over for 30mins and going in only a field goal behind. not a welcome return, altho another motivation kick in the ass would be timely i guess. packers seem to have really designed their game well.

GB did a good job coming back after the interception. It definitely helps a young QB to be playing with a vet club with some good receivers. Flynn has been around 3 years, while he hasn't the game experience, he should know the offense and the calls.
I still can't believe the Giants blew that game. I fell asleep during the Indy/Jags game and went 'whoah' when I saw NY was up like 31 to 10.

― ice cr?m, Monday, 20 December 2010 03:39 (fourteen years ago)
mebbe patriots should try to defend the FB out or the dinky check down to the middle? something about GB going to those plays over and over and over again should maybe give them a clue what is coming.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 20 December 2010 03:41 (fourteen years ago)
Difference on this game than the last couple of games is that NE didn't get up two scores early, which would have forced GB to try to get out of their game plan before it starts.
GB took a ballsy call with the on-side kick, which with the defer, got them the ball an extra time at half time. That worked. So far the Pack has been able to keep Brady off the field, which the Bears and Jets could not do. Those clubs are a ball control offense, they get into trouble when they have to wing it and chuck it a bunch. Detroit hung with them for a half, but they were trying to air it out, which you knew wasn't going hold up.

It is pretty tough to ask a first time starter QB to pull that one off.

If the Packers are out of the playoffs, I'd like to think it won't be because of this game, or even whatever the hell last week was, but because of the thoroughly winnable games they lost against the Bears and Redskins and Dolphins (and Falcons to a lesser extent) earlier in the year. Like, I'd really really like them to sneak in, and they still might, because they haven't been out of any game they've played (six losses by a combined total of 20 points!), so in theory they could hang with anybody, but it is very difficult to feel as though the football Gods are with us this year. Oh well, enjoying the immense schadenfavre all season long has been pretty great, at least.

I guess it's challopsy but I love Dilfer. And I think he's usually the first person to mention that he's not why the Ravens won that Super Bowl.

― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 20 December 2010 18:44 (fourteen years ago)
I guess I can see that, but remember when Sean Salisbury was on ESPN all the time? Dilfer is great at describing QB play, whatever his faults might be. And unlike Steve Young he will actually stop talking sometimes.

"hahah why are there ads for dior perfume"
Dudes got to buy some thing for their ladiez. I get her the Dior and she might walk around the house getting naked.
They have been showing that same commercial for years.
The commercials I can't get are those cell phone adds where everyone is a douchebag like the guy with the football player and the blown knee and the total dick that is busting on this guys Christmas decorations to his face. It's like 'buy our cell phones' they are perfect for snarky jerks like you. It will allow you to be a creep in more ways than one.

The commercial with the football player with a busted knee has some pretty damn weird semiotics. It's this company that is an NFL sponsor selling using your cell phone for fantasy football by having a doctor saying 'who gives a crap about your screwed knee', I'm just glad I was able to dump you off my fantasy team. I'm not even going to get into the racial subtext...all I want to know is who is signing off on this shit?
It's like 70s - drinking beer is fun and sometimes it is with Billy Martin, John Madden or Bubba Smith.80s- drinking beer is a party with girls in bathing suits and you might have a dog or a guy in a funny suit partAYing with you.90s- beer commericals gets kind of psych with frogs saying Budweiser100s- starts out with DUDE, ends with guys in coors lite commercials preferring the beer to hot nearly naked women and/or being cuckholded for drinking lameo beer
Somewhere in this America went wrong.

― earlnash, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

With everything going on, did Tebow show any promise at all yesterday? I saw he busted off a run and stats wise it wasn't terrible (or great), but it looks like they didn't have the ball much.

Who exactly did the Broncos choose with those picks? I haven't been able to figure it out. It looks like they might have traded some off.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 03:55 (fourteen years ago)
Not a whole lot of people gave the Bears a shot at winning their division, but at 10-4 it is done.
They are 6-1 on the road.
That said, I still think the Bears and Jets game will have a playoff feel. If the Bears win out they will get a first week bye, as they have the tie-breaker over the Eagles.
― earlnash, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 04:44 (fourteen years ago)

Here's what the Broncos got: starting quarterback Kyle Orton, starting outside linebacker Robert Ayers, first-round receiver Demaryius Thomas, third-round receiver Eric Decker, one-half of tight end Richard Quinn (Bears' draft pick plus one more to get him) and one-third of quarterback Tim Tebow (draft pick plus two more).
