BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns officially fired head coach Eric Mangini, the team announced Monday morning.

Mangini was 10-22 in two seasons in Cleveland, including a 2-10 mark in the AFC North. The Browns were embarrassed, 41-9, in Mangini's last game Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

the texans as a franchise seems to be defined by the kind of safe mediocrity demonstrated by the decision to bring kubiak back. i thought the bad record this year might have been enough of a push to stir things up but i should've known better than to underestimate the steadfastness of their tedious equilibrium. i like to see coaches given time to make things happen but this team has been going nowhere for a few seasons and now is going backwards, and that's not really a pattern you are looking to reinforce.

I think some of these clubs holding on to a coach might be because of the inevitible lockout/strike that is going to happen.

Yeah, that's what I'm hearing now, that Davis did it because Hue Jackson was interviewing with the Niners and he didn't want to lose him. He is supposed to be offering Jackson the Raiders job.

I had heard that the only way Jackson would stay was if he was head coach, but then there didn't seem to be any good reason to let Cable go and I convinced myself that it wouldn't happen.

It could be worse. Fuck, it HAS been worse, lol.

Jackson is the first guy they've had in the building in a long time with any kind of credentials whatsoever.

Instead of sudden-death overtime used in the regular season, each team will get a possession in overtime unless the receiving team takes the kickoff and scores a touchdown. Then the game is over.

If the receiving team kicks a field goal, the other team gets a possession. A field goal would put the game into sudden death. A touchdown ends the game.

A defensive score of any kind ends the game because it would count as a possession for both teams.

The players just seemed able to unite behind him somehow. He doesn't make stupid comments to the press and he doesn't air dirty laundry, he was exactly the kind of no nonsense, utilitarian coach that the Raiders needed.

Skip Bayless is such a Vince Young fanboy it's disgusting.

Look, Fisher may or may not still be the right coaching choice for the Titans, but I think if you're placing all your hopes on Vince Young being the player you hang your team's fortunes on, you deserve what you're inevitably going to get (which is misery and disappointment with a few dynamic games scattered in there).

When I lived in Nashville, McNair was still the QB (r.i.p.) and they had up seasons and down seasons, but the people still really seemed to like Jeff Fisher. What I gather from friends who still live there, though, is that the people there are kind of turning on Fisher just like Bud Adams is and they all feel that Vince Young's greatness has been being stifled under that coaching regime.

Have at it, I say. You may very well get it the way you want it, but I will definitely be around to say TOLD YOU SO.

I mean I look at the Titans and I think about what a trainwreck they COULD be if Fisher didn't keep VY in check. I mean it's the worse curse on a football team for a coach to fall in love with the *idea* of a QB.

In fairness, I was blinded by how Russell played at LSU and figured he'd be a sure thing in the NFL. What I didn't realize is how unambitious he would turn out to be. Like, I'm not even sure that guy likes football. And now he's out of work.

Vince Young, same story. At Texas, he was phenomenal, and he's even been phenomenal a few times in the pros, but there are so many red flags on him that I feel really sorry for the fans (and the owner) who choose to ignore them.

Yeah. I can't think of a good example, but there's plenty of good, serviceable players who may not blind you with their talent coming in but who do the work and become good. It's a shame sometimes that the flashy players like VY and Russell get the $$$ and attention and just aren't ready for it, or blow it off.

One thing I'm really looking forward to in the new CBA is the rookie salary scale. Sam Bradford turned out to have a pretty good rookie season, but there was NO REASON ON EARTH he should've been compensated the way he was compensated.

Watching ESPN, Marvin Lewis is being interviewed:

A) I can't understand WHY he would come back to the Bengals.
B) I can't understand WHY he just said he's absolutely sure that Carson Palmer will remain the starting QB next season.

On the plus side, their young WRs seem pretty talented. On the minus side, Carson Palmer is out of gas.

Even if you can draft a new QB, unless it is the next coming of Peyton Manning, he won't be ready. Carson Palmer has become maddingly inconsistant, but the guy isn't at the scrap heap like say Jake Delhomme was in Carolina. Palmer had some good games and he had some bad ones, but I'd put Palmer as still better than 1/2 the QBs in the NFL. I think it is possible he could improve some, if not having to play from behind. Biggest thing Palmer could do is cut down on the interceptions. Cincy's run game is worse. The Bengals have also really needed a running back that is sure handed and good in the passing game for a long time. They also went from having a good pass rush, to not much of one.

The Bengals were bad this year, but they are still young on defense and I could believe them being 11-5 or 10-6 next year as much as 4-12.

If I was the Arizona Cardinals and Ken Whisenhunt, I'd love the Bengals to trade me Carson Palmer. Palmer isn't anywhere near as bad now as Kurt Warner looked with the Giants.

uhhh, mcdaniels game plans were not really all that imo, and his in-game adjustment was _abysmal_. of course, the fact that his talent pool was abysmal really got in the way of judging that accurately. only thing i can say without hesitation is that he would be a good qb's coach.

I just paid into a friend's pool and bet the minimum possible on the Jets winning, the Jets/Colts game's total score not exceeding 45, the Saints to beat Seattle by 10, and Baltimore to beat KC by 3+. Does ILNFL agree with these picks? I have a feeling the Jets over Colts might be controversial, but I don't like the Colts this year and the Jets won me a bunch last year when they upset SD.

The goofy thing about the Jets hype is really I think they came in about where they should have, 11-5 and as a wildcard. Those big loudmouth clubs never last, they kind of remind me a bit of Jerry Glanville's Oilers and Falcons clubs in the bluster dept. I don't think the Jets are quite as 'loathed' by others like those Glanville clubs, but to me there is a similar kind of empty and loud bluster.

Yeah, I don't have a real good feeling about either the Jets or Colts, but the more I think about it, the more I kind of wish I would have picked the Colts. Ah well.

reading the fins articles upthread I'm kind of embarassed about how much dysfunction the Fins organization has had in the last decade.

I haven't paid as much attention the last two offseasons as I did during the Saban/Cameron era, but I guess I didn't realize how much of a mockery Ross was making us. I mean the whole recruiting latin popstars as owners thing, I thought that was a little weird, but man I miss Huizenga :(.

still though can't say I'm sad we didn't get Harbaugh. I'm not even sold that Sparano's a bad coach, he did great shit his first year. but now, if he does indeed remain the guy, he ain't gonna do well knowing how close to being axed he was and might still be.

Henning stepping down might be a good thing. I still say the best offense Miami had in the post Marino era was the offense Norv Turner installed in 2002, the year Ricky joined the team.

Prior to Fiedler being out due to injury, the team averaged 30 points a game (yes, a Fiedler led team averaged 30 a game!) through six weeks. and it was largely due to Norv Turner opening up the passing offense to get fullbacks/running backs more involved in the passing game, and better using the tight end role. It was a real creative offense I haven't seen them use since and teams really had trouble stopping it (other than Denver, who then broke Jay's hand).

After Jay went out and Ray Lucas came in, he had to dumb it down, and I don't think they ever brought it back to what it was prior after Jay returned. Still keep wondering what that season mighta been like had Jay never been hurt.

fwiw, dave hyde, who wrote some of the scathing articles and tweets over the past few days (which may be influencing yr opinion), wrote a new article this morning. it softens his view of the organization, and suggests that many in the media misreported what's been happening (because they're pursuing their own agendas).

Colts over the Jets-
While the Jets have a few good wins, they are pretty inconsistent and the thing in the stat line that jumps out is that they are not piling up the sacks like last year. Manning had a cold streak in the middle of the season, but if you take out those 3 games the guy threw for 27 TDs and only 6 ints in the rest of the 13, otherwards the rumors of his imminent demise are a bit premature. Getting back Addai and bringing back the old battering ram in Rhodes and most likely the new mix offensive line gelling late has brought back the long lamented Colts running game. When the Colts can run the ball with that passing attack, they control the clock and their defense stays fresh, which is probably shown in how the Colts have shut down some pretty good running backs like Steve Johnson, Pocket Hercules and McFadden.

In theory and hype this should be a walk for New Orleans, but I see a few things that could lead to the game being closer than expected. 1. The Saints running game is really damaged, they are going to have to throw the ball alot and it seems to me in the Brees period, when that gets out of balence (in this case out of necessity) they can be a bit more mistake prone. 2. Playing in Seattle since they moved outside has been a tough place to play and total trap game destination, this tied in that to me being an old NFL fan, even with a title, I still see the 'Aints you know- they have NEVER won a road playoff game (criminy only won their first playoff game like five years ago). 3. Even last year when the Saints were gangbusters, they had games where they played down to their competition making games against second level teams close. I don't think on paper the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png should be able to hang or win, but I think when you take these into consideration, I could buy it being closer than the total blowout predicted.

1. all AFC Easts other than Dolphins, must root against. if they're playing each other, I root for both to get lost in the woods.

Actually I think the play by play is pretty good for the 2nd string. When ESPN or the NFL network have to put together a second string team, sometimes it gets pretty funky. To be honest, the NFL network hasn't yet put together a decent play by play team.
