BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns officially fired head coach Eric Mangini, the team announced Monday morning.
Mangini was 10-22 in two seasons in Cleveland, including a 2-10 mark in the AFC North. The Browns were embarrassed, 41-9, in Mangini's last game Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
We will have much more on Cleveland's coaching change coming up in the AFC North blog.
― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 3 January 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)
it is hard to come up with much in mangini's defense.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 3 January 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)
That team would've sucked no matter who was coaching. Not enough good players.
They should've traded Cribbs by now. That dude is a luxury item.
― I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Monday, 3 January 2011 18:02 (fourteen years ago)
True, but Mangini isn't really right for any team. I can't think of anything he does particularly well.

the texans as a franchise seems to be defined by the kind of safe mediocrity demonstrated by the decision to bring kubiak back. i thought the bad record this year might have been enough of a push to stir things up but i should've known better than to underestimate the steadfastness of their tedious equilibrium. i like to see coaches given time to make things happen but this team has been going nowhere for a few seasons and now is going backwards, and that's not really a pattern you are looking to reinforce.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 02:11 (fourteen years ago)
The Texans are probably gonna clean up once Peyton retires...

Hue Jackson interviewing for the 49ers job. Dude's done a lotta good for the Raiders, kinda hope he doesn't go but Niners could do worse.http://www.sbreport.net/raider_news/008/5821.html
Also despite earlier NOO DONT GO reactions to Cable's possible ouster, I haven't seen anything definitive to tell me that that would even happen. And crazy Al never talks to anyone anyway so it's all speculation. Hello North Korea.

Hue Jackson was a good coordinator for the Falcons too, hope the Raiders hang onto him.
Mike Mularkey's going to interview w/Denver and Cleveland. Sorta hoping they snatch him up and the Falcons replace him w/Josh McDaniels.

PTT mentions it above, but oh man, that ricky williams interview:
On the major difference between the Patriots and the Dolphins: “They have a quarterback.”_____________________________________On Brandon Marshall: “Being around Brandon a lot – I like the guy, I think the world of him – but as a teammate, sometimes he makes it difficult to like him and support him. It’s not necessarily what he says, it’s when he says it and the way he says it. But for the most part the things that he says are things that everyone else wants to say, but no one has the courage, or the balls. And some of it is intelligence – they’re smart enough not to say those things, because they don’t want to burn bridges. But when you have $50 million, then you can get away with whatever you want.”

Instead of sudden-death overtime used in the regular season, each team will get a possession in overtime unless the receiving team takes the kickoff and scores a touchdown. Then the game is over.If the receiving team kicks a field goal, the other team gets a possession. A field goal would put the game into sudden death. A touchdown ends the game.A defensive score of any kind ends the game because it would count as a possession for both teams.

Skip Bayless is such a Vince Young fanboy it's disgusting.
Look, Fisher may or may not still be the right coaching choice for the Titans, but I think if you're placing all your hopes on Vince Young being the player you hang your team's fortunes on, you deserve what you're inevitably going to get (which is misery and disappointment with a few dynamic games scattered in there).
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)
No doubt. That way lies madness, surely.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)
When I lived in Nashville, McNair was still the QB (r.i.p.) and they had up seasons and down seasons, but the people still really seemed to like Jeff Fisher. What I gather from friends who still live there, though, is that the people there are kind of turning on Fisher just like Bud Adams is and they all feel that Vince Young's greatness has been being stifled under that coaching regime.
Have at it, I say. You may very well get it the way you want it, but I will definitely be around to say TOLD YOU SO.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:56 (fourteen years ago)
Can't believe McNair is dead, tbqh.
Anyway yeah...it's like fans going all batshit for Russell when he got drafted and ranting about he's being held back by the coaching staff they don't let him do enough whatever whatever and it's like ffs, dude is not ever going to be what you want him to be and that's not the fault of the coach.
VY is a whole other level though. Weird situation there. But yeah, that's hardly on Fisher.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)
I mean I look at the Titans and I think about what a trainwreck they COULD be if Fisher didn't keep VY in check. I mean it's the worse curse on a football team for a coach to fall in love with the *idea* of a QB.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)
Gee do I say "I mean" enough? I mean...
― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)
In fairness, I was blinded by how Russell played at LSU and figured he'd be a sure thing in the NFL. What I didn't realize is how unambitious he would turn out to be. Like, I'm not even sure that guy likes football. And now he's out of work.
Vince Young, same story. At Texas, he was phenomenal, and he's even been phenomenal a few times in the pros, but there are so many red flags on him that I feel really sorry for the fans (and the owner) who choose to ignore them.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah. I can't think of a good example, but there's plenty of good, serviceable players who may not blind you with their talent coming in but who do the work and become good. It's a shame sometimes that the flashy players like VY and Russell get the $$$ and attention and just aren't ready for it, or blow it off.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)
One thing I'm really looking forward to in the new CBA is the rookie salary scale. Sam Bradford turned out to have a pretty good rookie season, but there was NO REASON ON EARTH he should've been compensated the way he was compensated.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)
Watching ESPN, Marvin Lewis is being interviewed:
A) I can't understand WHY he would come back to the Bengals.B) I can't understand WHY he just said he's absolutely sure that Carson Palmer will remain the starting QB next season.
On the plus side, their young WRs seem pretty talented. On the minus side, Carson Palmer is out of gas.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)
for some reason, palmer did play better after they shut t.o. down
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)
Harbaugh apparently talking to Niners right this minute.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)
Even if you can draft a new QB, unless it is the next coming of Peyton Manning, he won't be ready. Carson Palmer has become maddingly inconsistant, but the guy isn't at the scrap heap like say Jake Delhomme was in Carolina. Palmer had some good games and he had some bad ones, but I'd put Palmer as still better than 1/2 the QBs in the NFL. I think it is possible he could improve some, if not having to play from behind. Biggest thing Palmer could do is cut down on the interceptions. Cincy's run game is worse. The Bengals have also really needed a running back that is sure handed and good in the passing game for a long time. They also went from having a good pass rush, to not much of one.
The Bengals were bad this year, but they are still young on defense and I could believe them being 11-5 or 10-6 next year as much as 4-12.
If I was the Arizona Cardinals and Ken Whisenhunt, I'd love the Bengals to trade me Carson Palmer. Palmer isn't anywhere near as bad now as Kurt Warner looked with the Giants.

Let the Raiders hold onto a coach for more than a 2-3 year stretch before we start talking about Vince Young.
Vince needs a disciplinarian coach who is clearly in control of the team so that VY can do whatever he does without derailing the whole damn train.
I don't want VY on the Raiders...but boy do we know how much Al loves the long ball
― VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

― I Am Kurious Assange (polyphonic), Thursday, 6 January 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

uhhh, mcdaniels game plans were not really all that imo, and his in-game adjustment was _abysmal_. of course, the fact that his talent pool was abysmal really got in the way of judging that accurately. only thing i can say without hesitation is that he would be a good qb's coach.

Veg, does Oakland have the economic standing right now to buy Al Davis out of the Raiders in a hostile takeover?
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 6 January 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)
I honestly have no idea.
Plus the fans and the organization have a very strange relationship with Al. We all pretty much openly hate him for stuff like this Cable crap, or whatever. But that gets problematic when you look at how he looks after his players, how he integrated the team, how much he (misguidedly) loves his Raiders, etc. I don't know that a hostile takeover would have any support except from outsiders, you know.
Much as I hate him I don't know that even I would support that.
It's weird.

Yeah I mean Al was an amazing owner once upon a time and a really important figure in league history - the current state of things is sad, but it'd be even sadder in a way if he had to give up the team.
I think Mark Davis, his son, is supposed to take over the team when he dies. Dunno much about him though.

Are you guys going to post your picks to the thread? Are you all waiting for injury reports or what? I just paid into a friend's pool and bet the minimum possible on the Jets winning, the Jets/Colts game's total score not exceeding 45, the Saints to beat Seattle by 10, and Baltimore to beat KC by 3+. Does ILNFL agree with these picks? I have a feeling the Jets over Colts might be controversial, but I don't like the Colts this year and the Jets won me a bunch last year when they upset SD.
Can't wait 'til the weekend!

i can however picture peyton dropping 4 tds on them no prob
The goofy thing about the Jets hype is really I think they came in about where they should have, 11-5 and as a wildcard. Those big loudmouth clubs never last, they kind of remind me a bit of Jerry Glanville's Oilers and Falcons clubs in the bluster dept. I don't think the Jets are quite as 'loathed' by others like those Glanville clubs, but to me there is a similar kind of empty and loud bluster.
― earlnash, Friday, 7 January 2011 05:50 (fourteen years ago)

a clause forbidding your employer from interviewing your replacement prior to your termination could be fun there. probly wouldnt fly in most environments, but maybe in the nfl environment? argue that it is a material term because a head coaches credibility and authority is essential to his own ability to perform w/ the athletes and egos involved?

A source monitoring the situation tells the Sun Sentinel there is definite tension between Sparano and General Manager Jeff Ireland. A relationship that dates back eight years to their time with the Dallas Cowboys has indeed been strained, the source said.
so the article says even sparano might not coach the team.

reading the fins articles upthread I'm kind of embarassed about how much dysfunction the Fins organization has had in the last decade.
I haven't paid as much attention the last two offseasons as I did during the Saban/Cameron era, but I guess I didn't realize how much of a mockery Ross was making us. I mean the whole recruiting latin popstars as owners thing, I thought that was a little weird, but man I miss Huizenga :(.
still though can't say I'm sad we didn't get Harbaugh. I'm not even sold that Sparano's a bad coach, he did great shit his first year. but now, if he does indeed remain the guy, he ain't gonna do well knowing how close to being axed he was and might still be.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)
Henning stepping down might be a good thing. I still say the best offense Miami had in the post Marino era was the offense Norv Turner installed in 2002, the year Ricky joined the team.
Prior to Fiedler being out due to injury, the team averaged 30 points a game (yes, a Fiedler led team averaged 30 a game!) through six weeks. and it was largely due to Norv Turner opening up the passing offense to get fullbacks/running backs more involved in the passing game, and better using the tight end role. It was a real creative offense I haven't seen them use since and teams really had trouble stopping it (other than Denver, who then broke Jay's hand).
After Jay went out and Ray Lucas came in, he had to dumb it down, and I don't think they ever brought it back to what it was prior after Jay returned. Still keep wondering what that season mighta been like had Jay never been hurt.

fwiw, dave hyde, who wrote some of the scathing articles and tweets over the past few days (which may be influencing yr opinion), wrote a new article this morning. it softens his view of the organization, and suggests that many in the media misreported what's been happening (because they're pursuing their own agendas).
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 8 January 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)
that's good. some of the tweets and also the Jason Cole article was what flavored my opinion.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)
Boy the Dolphins are a weird club, they shop around in public for a new head coach with figures in the press that were insane and then turn around and give the guy they have now an extension.
As for picks today....
Colts over the Jets-While the Jets have a few good wins, they are pretty inconsistent and the thing in the stat line that jumps out is that they are not piling up the sacks like last year. Manning had a cold streak in the middle of the season, but if you take out those 3 games the guy threw for 27 TDs and only 6 ints in the rest of the 13, otherwards the rumors of his imminent demise are a bit premature. Getting back Addai and bringing back the old battering ram in Rhodes and most likely the new mix offensive line gelling late has brought back the long lamented Colts running game. When the Colts can run the ball with that passing attack, they control the clock and their defense stays fresh, which is probably shown in how the Colts have shut down some pretty good running backs like Steve Johnson, Pocket Hercules and McFadden.
Saints over the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png-In theory and hype this should be a walk for New Orleans, but I see a few things that could lead to the game being closer than expected. 1. The Saints running game is really damaged, they are going to have to throw the ball alot and it seems to me in the Brees period, when that gets out of balence (in this case out of necessity) they can be a bit more mistake prone. 2. Playing in Seattle since they moved outside has been a tough place to play and total trap game destination, this tied in that to me being an old NFL fan, even with a title, I still see the 'Aints you know- they have NEVER won a road playoff game (criminy only won their first playoff game like five years ago). 3. Even last year when the Saints were gangbusters, they had games where they played down to their competition making games against second level teams close. I don't think on paper the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png should be able to hang or win, but I think when you take these into consideration, I could buy it being closer than the total blowout predicted.

― Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)
my rules for who I root for generally goes:
1. all AFC Easts other than Dolphins, must root against. if they're playing each other, I root for both to get lost in the woods.2. if team is relatively new to playoffs or doesn't have history of success, I like to see them succeed, especially if it is against someone who's been there a lot.3. There are some teams that I just like their style and root for em every time (Saints/Colts). that said no way I'm rooting for either to win it all. Kinda awnna see the Falcons get theirs this year.

well I obv can't literally say of all time as I didn't see my first Super Bowl until 1989, it was a somewhat hyperbolic statement, but since I've been watching them in 1989, I can't think of another game so boring, other than perhaps the Ravens-Giants.
Both teams played pretty badly in the game too. It was very incongruous for both teams.
I was excited as hell for the game but it was such a snoozer.

steelers played poorly but the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png capably pissed away the gifts they got

my favorite super bowls are--
Giants--Patriots (great defensive battle, great finish)Steelers--Cardinals (I don't know how you couldn't have fun watching that one)Patriots--Rams
I actually missed Titans--Rams because I didn't have any television that year and was in manic depressive mode....otherwise that one would likely be on the list.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)
well, Giants - Ravens is my *personal* worst of all-time, but only becuz I was stupid enough to put a dime on the G-men
I never thought for a second that Trent Dilfer could ever put, "Super Bowl Champion" after his name
boy was the joke on me
― Stormy Davis, Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)
Giants--Bills was pretty great too but I was 11 and my parents sent me to bed, so I had to hear the FG attempt from the other room :(

I'm watching a Swedish feed of the game and b/c of commercial scheduling i get to hear a lot more of the announcer banter and got to hear Mayock jokingly telling one of his stat dudes "I'm getting really tired of hearing from you"
― Fetchboy, Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)
i think 07 and 08 spoiled us for superbowls, usually 'decent game' is the best you can hope for
― Princess TamTam, Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)
@Stormy--I pretty much hated that era of the NFL (2000-2001). I mean I love a great defensive battle, but the defense-weight of that era was more just incompetence of inexperienced QBs. much more impressive seeing teams with solid defenses now that we have the new school of QBs succeeding.
I mean christ Elvis Grbac was a starter then blech
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)
The ones in the mid-90s where the NFC team blew out the AFC team by like 30-40 points were much worse, because basically the only point to watch the second half would be to see whether Bud Light could pull it out in the Bud Bowl that year.
― C-L, Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)
the game doesn't necessarily have to be close for me to enjoy it, I thought last year's was great even though I had smoked a lot of weed and fell asleep a lot due to that and alcohol.
ie Colts--Bears awsn't the most exciting in the world but I enjoyed it as I was rooting for Peyton to get it. besides, the AFC championship was really the super bowl that year. will never forget that game.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

when i was growing up there was a long run of blowout, boring super bowls. there's now been a (fairly long) run of close, exciting super bowls.
we are truly blessed.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)
also, don't bag on Elvis Grbac ... he's a Michigan man! every Michigan QB gets to become a starter in the NFl.. it's a rule. look at Chad Henne
― Stormy Davis, Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)
@Stormy -- that one was a hard one to predict, though. I mean, everybody talked up the Vikings as the go-to team for the first half of the year, then the Giants went out and beat them by 41.
I know a lot of people didn't take the Ravens seriously that year. I sure didn't. I picked the Titans to beat em, and I did pick the Ravens in the bowl, but it was more guesswork than a confident feeling.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

Actually I think the play by play is pretty good for the 2nd string. When ESPN or the NFL network have to put together a second string team, sometimes it gets pretty funky. To be honest, the NFL network hasn't yet put together a decent play by play team.

― VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 9 January 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)
Bad kick
Might have worked if they did it as a play action roll out or something, but running right up the middle when you don't run well, is a trying to get too smart.
Bad play call, they had to go for the 2pt conversion.

― omar little, Sunday, 9 January 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)
i was out and my brother called me and said the were winning by ten pts and i said "oh no!" really loud, just instinctively. "how??" listened to my brother for a second then said, "i'll call you back, i want to hear about this." some kinda older guy looked at me as i hung up, grim expression, and said "you heard the news of the day, i guess. terrible day." he walked off down the aisle. we may have been talking about two different things.

collinsworth has been killing sanchez -- so amazing
feel like in Heaven the Jets always lose and it's always with Ken O'Brien at QB
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)
i don't really like collinsworth but he is good at disgust
― horseshoe, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)
To me Sanchez is a fraud of the highest order, that's why Jets bluster always pissed me off
― VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)
alright being objective tho Sanchez is a second year starter who is playing in his second straight playoffs, I mean I think too much is expected of him. the thing about him is that he doesn't consistently play mediocre, he either has a lights out great game or looks like a turkey trying to fuck a football out there. never any middle ground.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)
I mean, Sanchez has some mechanics but he just makes the worst decisions at the worst times
― VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)
all the mechanics in the world don't mean shit if you can't use em, just ask Michael Vick pre-jail.
sad thing is I think I'd still prefer him to Henne
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:35 (fourteen years ago)
Sanchez had a couple of good games against pretty good defenses this year, but he is pretty streaky and his completion percentage is just not up to modern standards (so far).
The guy might improve, but he really isn't that experienced compared to you your usual pro QB. Since high school he has one year as a starter at USC and then two with the Jets. I thought he could be a paper lion coming out of USC anyway.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:35 (fourteen years ago)
going back to the early game, how do you feel as a QB when you go 39 for 60, 404 yards, 2 TDs, no picks, and lose?
i mean it's kinda like 36 points not being enough has to be frustrating
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)
he is incredibly streaky & also the jets run game sort of broke down in the second half of the year
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)
He always feels like a backup QB to me.... He plays like he can't believe he's the starter
― VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)
rodney so full of disgust @ saints' defense he interrupted dungy
― horseshoe, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)
coaches are seeing what Matt Ryan did in 08 and thinking the climate has changed and that all rookie QBs will succeed out of the gate. Sanchez is the type that could have benefitted sitting on the bench his first year and learning from a veteran.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)
except he had none to learn from. Kellen Clemens?
i mean the jets aren't in the worst situation right now -- they did make the afc title game last year w/ dude
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:40 (fourteen years ago)
it's not easy to just get a great qb
I think Mark Sanchez has done OK really in a way, experience and expectations considered, but he is in a situation where he is being asked to go throw for throw with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. That's just not going to work most of the time.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:41 (fourteen years ago)
The expectations are kind of off the map, which is a NY thing. The guy did great in that Steelers game and the early NE game. Jets could use a steady handed slot receiver, as both of their main wide outs, while fast and big are not exactly what you would call dependable on the hands.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)
i hope Favre is watching this game right now and realizing that all the records he set have a shelf life of like 5 years

jets looking real good on this drive here
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:19 (fourteen years ago)
if they keep pounding it away methodically like this, they will. taking the game out of Sanchez's hands and forcing the Colt D to beat em, and well they just ain't gonna do that. Indy's gotta make heavy adjustments.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:20 (fourteen years ago)
is this one of the longest (time-wise) drives of the year?
― Mordy, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:21 (fourteen years ago)
colts D doesn't have it in them. if they are gonna win they are going to have to engineer having the last possession.

don't like that kick at all
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)
It is a bit harder to pull that run though on the 15, as the defense is going to be alot more cramped down to the line that close to the endzone.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)
you've gotta give manning the ball in the 4th
― Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:35 (fourteen years ago)
i know peyton is peyton but seriously if i'm caldwell/the o coordinator i'm like "do not check into a run peyton, please"
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:36 (fourteen years ago)
also there is no way the colts get this ball back with more than one time out and more than 2 mins
think the colts should line up 15 on this drive
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:37 (fourteen years ago)
i mean the colts pretty much just said that they're gonna put their whole season in the hands of a rb that they just signed off the street 4 weeks ago and a defense that just gave up like a 28 minute touchdown drive
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:37 (fourteen years ago)
it's amazing to me that the Colts have to put up a concerted effort just to only give up 3 yards on a run
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:39 (fourteen years ago)
jets are gonna throw it here -- i've seen this enough times
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:39 (fourteen years ago)
Eh there also is 4 minutes left and 3 TOs.
Big thing is that they have to keep the Colts have to keep the Jets from scoring.

― ice cr?m, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)
i mean WHY would you do that on 3rd and 5, sanchez has been inaccurate, it takes no time off the clock.. ??
― daria-g, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)
1 time out and 2 minutes at the 50, criminy the Colts could move it up a bit and then kill the clock. I've seen this happen.
No problemo.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)
somehow I won't be surprised if this game ends on something weird like the official tackling a Colt at the 1 with 0:00 left
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
nate kaeding misses 23 filed goals
god that game killed me
― horseshoe, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
since I held my nose and bet on the Jets to make the 3 point spread, I would be so happy if the Colts win with a field goal right now!
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
They have to not make a mistake...and mistakes do happen.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
why don't they chew the clock more?
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:50 (fourteen years ago)
because the other team has mark sanchez -- who cares
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)
wtf is he saying, sounded like 'johnny farted'
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)
peyton int would be a fitting end to his season
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)
ick they're in the grey area of the field, come on Colts
Jets are going to start calling TOs to try and save clock at this point.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)
that'll backfire if the Colts pick this one up
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)
are they betting on vinatieri to miss a fg?
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
Vinateri isn't usually the bomber.
53 secs left though and 2 TOs - so they got some time to go for a FG.
― earlnash, Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
too bad the colts still have the colts defense.
― lenonsense (Clay), Sunday, 9 January 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
Rex Ryan did a fake icing the kicker! That is fun.

but yesterday was truly making history. even tho I wasn't rooting for em, that technically has to be one of the biggest playoff upsets of modern times. Losing to a team that won 4 less games has happened before, but the divide between these two teams was much wider.

wow, the Chiefs don't have a single impressive win this year. Only one victory over a team with a winning record, zero over playoff games. Granted you can't hold who they played against them, they beat who they beat, but they were also 2-4 against teams with a record of 8-8 or better.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)
games=teams

most teams dont have great records against good teams, why because theyre hard to beat
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)
Ravens are 4-3 against teams with winning records, beat the Jets, Steelers, and Saints, and took the Patriots to overtime.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:43 (fourteen years ago)
welp there u go one team has a slightly winning record against playoff teams!
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)
sry winning records
yea but the difference is the teams the Ravens played were much better.
the 2-4 Chiefs record includes two games against an 8-8 team that swept it (Oakland).
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)
i certainly dont think kc are one of the stronger playoff teams but just looking at w/l against teams w/winning records is a comically small flukey sample size - beating bad teams is worthwhile info too - how you beat bad teams, how you beat good teams etc
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)
meanwhile Philly was 4-2 against teams with .500 records or better, and the Packers were 4-3 against .500 teams or better.
and the teams with byes have better records against these types of teams. looking at the Chiefs schedule, it was like my Fins in 2008, kinda beat up on a lot of crap teams. Doesn't mean they didn't earn it, you beat who you play, they won their division fair and square.
just more or less justifying the fact that I bet $100 on the Ravens.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
I don't discount beating bad teams at all, because if you're a bad team, you struggle to beat anyone, even bad teams. believe me I'm not one of those 'strength of schedule' wankers.
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)
were i betting on that game i would certainly take the ravens too, if thats what were talking abt

― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)
what the hell is the wrong with the Ravens o-line today. they're protecting the pass fine but getting shoved 2-3 yards back on every designed run
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

― Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)
kind of a dubious challenge, if they're wrong that gives them only one more challenge in the game for a first down that may not even lead to anything.

― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

mike mccarthy is a fucking idiot
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:59 (fourteen years ago)
mccarthy's GB is doing something similar what to reid's philly has always done in that they can make average receivers occasionally look great, but the rough edges will show through if you keep watching
― Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)
yea that's a bit o_O they only had 25 yards to go to get into long FG range. was worth a shot at least
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)
i think people have said this before but he really does come off as the kid in elementary school that wandered off during recess only to be found eating his own boogers :-(

wtf calling a timeout for? you aren't kicking a FG, so surely you have a couple plays you have practiced for this situation??
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 10 January 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah if they don't go for it then I don't even
― VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 10 January 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 10 January 2011 00:23 (fourteen years ago)
it's pretty easy to understand -- it's a non-declineable, non-loss of down penalty -- it would be like a false start on a two point conversion

there was a story in sports-illustrated, maybe 10 -- 15 years ago (before GB's last SB win), about how green bay would never, ever be a top-shelf franchise again because young stars didn't want to play in wisconsin. nonsense.

Did you know that in the entirety of the Packers/Bears rivalry that they have only played against each other once in the playoffs, and that was in the 1940's? How epic would this NFC Championship game be??
― frogbs, Monday, 10 January 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)
i've defended the playoff system as it generally works, but they desperately need to implement seeding by record, ignoring the division winners. atl's "prize" for being the best team in the nfc is getting the wild card packers, while the bears get the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png, who are still one win from .500
makes no gd sense

Yeah that I definitely do agree with. I mean I kind of like the idea of the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png getting to make some noise, the divisional structure is something that I feel is very important to the game. But the Bears seem to have caught a massive break when GB won as otherwise they'd be playing the Eagles.
Bears/Hawks will be a crazy matchup for sure, I don't think I'll be able to predict that one within like 3 touchdowns. Both teams have played some pretty terrible, terrible football over the regular season.

also I wonder if the 2010 Bears make the super bowl, will they be better or worse than the 2006 Super Bowl team??
For all Cutler's flaws, he's better than Rex.
― Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 10 January 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)
bears defense doesn't seem quite as intimidating in 2010 as it did in 2006

I can't even picture the Bears in this superbowl. Like, I keep forgetting they're in the playoffs.

I dunno if I'd necessarily prefer Cutler over Grossman to take the shot in the red zone on third down.

cutler, no contest, but remember,

I'd take Cutler any day, on one of his "good days" he's as good as anyone in the league, and in terms of raw talent he's way above Grossman. He's capable of lifting a team on its shoulders and yet seems to actually do it so infrequently. The Bears certainly are on the side of fortune this season.
― frogbs, Monday, 10 January 2011 22:30 (fourteen years ago)
Just for posterity - the Bears are one of the worst teams in passing (28th) and running (22nd), and their pass defense is not great either (20th). The only thing they do well is stop the run. GB has a point differential 100 points higher than them. They have scored less points than every playoff team except for the one they are going to be playing, though their defense seems solid. Dunno how much those numbers were inflated by playing against the likes of Shaun Hill, Drew Stanton, Tyler Thigpen, Jimmy Clausen, and Joe Webb, but they seem to be stingy giving up points, Jets game excepted.

I think the 2010 Bears defense is probably a bit better up front and a bit less in the defensive backs than the 2006 club. It's the Bears, the offense is probably about the same, although the earlier club was better in the run. The O-line was definitely better back in 06. Cutler will make mistakes, but Grossman was totally maddening. Big thing with the Bears is they have to keep a balence.
I'd say the Bears are probably a year early on the development. Thing is that they have mix of vets on the o-line and defense and some players are really young.

defense was way better in 06 until tommie harris got hurt - offense kind of weird, like earl said their o-line and running game was better then, but cutler's a big edge over grossman. they also got some favorable matchups in the playoffs that year (http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png, saints)
