I'm rooting for Mularkey to be the Browns next head coach.

brownie, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

Huddle up homers with no playoff aspirations.

brownie, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

me too!

Princess TamTam, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

tamtam, is Mularkey the man? I mean, young QB in clevo, grizzled Holmgren as Prez, Mularkey is relatively young but experienced. Thinking it could be a match made in heaven.

brownie, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

didn't pay a ton of attention to college ball this year, need to catch up on draft prospects etc, not sure who the big free agents are and oh yeah lockout. happy the panthers are getting screwed out of Luck. i really like the direction cleveland's going in!

Princess TamTam, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

dude, I've been wrong so many times about so many things I'm shaken to the core of my being. But yeah, running game and o-line in place. Defensive 2ndary has improved tenfold. Needs = d-line and wideouts and backup RB's. Linebackers are eh but scrappy, Fujita getting hurt killed their run stopping ability. Dunno about the draft, I don't pay attention enough to know who the best receiver is, but whoever it is should be a high priority.

brownie, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

Mularkey's a ~good offensive coach~. i understand he was a lil bit of a disaster in Buffalo, but y'know, buffalo (sorry horseshoe!). im sorta not in love with the system he runs, but im probably just a finicky fan who doesnt understand how good ive got it! he looks like kevin costner.

Princess TamTam, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

best receiver is AJ green - best wr prospect since k records legend calvin johnson - but he'll prob be gone before the browns pick.

Princess TamTam, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

Mularkeys middle name is Rene which gives the Brownies some badly need ~flair~ also the last Bills coach to post a winning record if I'm not mistaken. Need a horseshoe perspective on this but she's buried in Peyton fatheads atm.

brownie, Saturday, 8 January 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

woulda thought the first order of bidness woulda been:
1) more bitchen about 18 game season
2) odds on a lockout

predeep natsvitika (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:34 (fourteen years ago)

The 18-game season idea SUCKS!

The odds on just about anything are 50/50, right? It either happens or it doesn't.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

the browns are gonna hire marty morningweigh (sp?)

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

yah i feel like i can't deal with this thread until i know if there's a lockout or not

call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

xp Is that breaking news or an educated guess? (I made the same guess a few days ago.)

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

no, but there's a lot of chatter that holmgren covets him

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:49 (fourteen years ago)

I think the 16 game season has some nice symmetry to it with football being 4 quarters long. I think the NFL should just be smarter and be able to get more football on national TV instead of trying to expand out the season.

I'd maybe have some NFL teams maybe move the pre-season games to other places in their regions (like say the Cowboys playing a pre-season game in say Oklahoma or Arkansas) in a college town or the Bears playing down in Champaign or a game in Wrigley or something weird like that one. It would still be an exhibition, but if done right and hyped right, it would be a novelty and bring people to see a game that might not go see one in the 'big city'. Then the season ticket holders might not gripe about having to buy 'bad games'.

Conversely to get more football on national TV, where the real damn money is at, I'd maybe dump a pre-season game add a second bye week and then use those bye weeks to have clubs either playing a Thursday night or Friday night pro game on national TV either coming from or to a bye week in the first 10 weeks or so of the season. They do that they could easily put probably 10-12 more big national games on TV, which I got a feeling would offset quite a few of those shite pre-season games.

earlnash, Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

wade phillips dc at houston will be something to watch. 3-4 with mario as roving rusher. could be fun. wonder if wade has known he is really for a dc for a couple years now.

ron rivera at carolina? i feel like he has been on the brink because he always gets hired as a hc at the end of the first season on madden season mode, for like 4 years now. poly?

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

earlnash has my vote for NFL commissioner

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

Roberto: Rivera excelled with the Bears running the 4-3 (or whatever it was), came to SD and learned the 3-4, and got a lot out of a defense that frankly has no great players. He conducted himself with class while he was a Charger, and everyone seemed to like him. He's your classic unproven high character coaching prospect, like Lewis or Dungy or Fewell or Nolan, but of course a lot will depend on personnel and his OC hire.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:15 (fourteen years ago)

thx dude. well good luck to ron. he just got landed with a shitty football team.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

"wade has known he is really for a dc for a couple years now."

Wade Phillips is a pretty respected coach. There are a ton of dudes that were good defensive coordinators for one reason or not never had luck as a head coach, which really is much more of a PR person/CEO type guy now.

Mid 80s Bears are starting to add up some head coaches --

Jeff Fisher
Ron Rivera
Leslie Frazier
Mike Singletary

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

Jim Harbaugh

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

Also, Rivera is fucked. That owner is the new Mike Brown, the Panthers the new budget-concious NFL team.

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

Rivera being the hc almost guarantees that Nick Fairley goes overall #1 in the draft, though...if they don't trade down to get more later round picks.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

Fairley probably goes #1 whether Rivera is coach or not.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

it's hard to be fucked in the nfl tbh

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 January 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

obv that's not completely true (see: browns, bills) but generally speaking rebuilding an nfl team is much easier than doing it in baseball -- where spending money is much more important & even the top prospects take years to develop -- and in basketball -- where the best teams have vice grips on championships for years on end.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 January 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

but even the bills have hope now, sorta

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 January 2011 22:16 (fourteen years ago)

For example: the Chiefs and http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png in the playoffs despite being awful last year.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

I honestly think the Browns are going in the right direction. This Shurmur rumor is kinda o_O but at least I trust Holmgren (for the time being). It's just that the Ravens and Steelers are head and shoulders so much better than the Browns that I can't see the Browns contending for years. The Bills are in the same boat with two good teams in the same division and a much smaller fanbase, were any Bills games blacked out this year? The Browns, at least, have weirdo loyal subhuman fans that sellout every game

brownie, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, what's with those fools?

(looks left and right; whistles innocently)

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 13 January 2011 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

nothing wrong with them other than loyalty + subhumanism + weirdos and the ability to never know who to start at QB.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 13 January 2011 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

He's clearly the best option, so why is it taking this long? Have you heard of them interviewing anyone else?

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 13 January 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

Nope. But I have heard that Jackson is already trying to shore up Rex Ryan as his defensive co-ordinator...

...

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 13 January 2011 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 13 January 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

Agh. Yeah, Rob.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 13 January 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

Defense was never really the achilles of the Raiders program while he was there before, was it? I mean, it's not a sexy hire to bring back a guy who was there before, but I don't think it would be that bad a thing.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 13 January 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, Rob Ryan was never their problem.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

Yup.

In other news, Al Davis is getting rid of John Marshall because our defense packages are too 'aggressive'. Because he thinks it's 1965 and that we should win with our front 4 and also bc he's crazy as a shithouse rat and goddammit when is this fucking guy gonna die so I can have my team back.

My friend at work has a son who is the director of personnel or something of the UFL and also used to work for the Browns under Chris Palmer and Butch Davis. He says that Pat Shurmur was without question the best choice available for the Browns and will definitely be their best coach of the expansion era. Hearing someone tell me that is pretty much all it takes to get me pumped up for next year. GO BROWNS!

This whole Jay Cutler saga is bugging me. I got stuck in traffic this morning and had to listen to sexual deviant Steve Phillips go on and on about how Cutler is a pussy. If a "quality" guy like Phillips is against him, maybe Im wrong in not supporting him. Then thinking about the other NFL'ers who tweeted during the game, criticizing Cutler made me think of the big picture. If there going to turn on one of their own so easily, how badly are they going to get smoked at the bargaining table come March? I know it will be a lockout, not a strike, so there will be no picket lines crossed, but these guys have absolutely no unity.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think overall player unity has anything to do with criticism of a single specific player. a lot of people -- in and outside the league -- apparently don't like jay cutler. having said that, his injury seems real and it seems stupid to have piled-on the criticism so quickly.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

I think people have already mentioned this, but people are ignoring the real issue here which is that he was playing like crap, and that Chicago was pretty suspect as a 2 seed. Would've loved to have seen Saints/Bears despite the joy the Seahawks gave me.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

cutler got a grade 2 mcl sprain (which takes weeks to recover from) and couldn't safely take cortisone to hobble back into the game. if anything i think the bears team is gonna rally around cutler 100% and go into next season pissed off.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

well i don't think cutler gets pissed off, i think he's just this weird blank slate, which is sort of a problem. but at the same time maybe this incident will get him to actually show some anger and work a little harder between now and next season. idk

Considering the Browns "weapons" last year (ie. Hillis) I really don't know what Daboll is capable of with a team that has wide receivers. Browns threw the ball to the TE and RB's all the time and ran it more often than not. I wonder, tho, what the Dolpins saw in him.

basedketball (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

Troy Polamalu did have the huge clutch fumble in the early Ravens win, then there was the 4th and 1 insane play where he hurdled the team to stop the QB and he probably won this one as he probabaly deserved to win one a season or two back. Ed Reed is still pretty good, but it isn't 2004 anymore. Matthews was freaking sick this year, so no argument if he won the award. I think Polamalu had a decent year and won this one on long term rep. Steelers are not the same if him or Casey Hampton are not playing.

earlnash, Thursday, 3 February 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)

yeah polamalu was more wildly inconsistent than anything--at his best he's amazing but there were games this year where he was playing and did absolutely nothing.

Polamalu's more explosive and does things Reed simply isn't capable of. Reed's a great range guy and one of the all time great ballhawks, but he doesn't bring many other dimensions to the table. I know you're a Miami stan so I can disregard your opinion on this matter.

VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 3 February 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

While they both are great safetys, I'd say Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu are pretty different talents. Ed Reed's crazyness seem to come much more in the pass game, where he kamakazees around for interceptions and/or pulling fumbles away from players that have already been tied up then being able to turn that turnover into an offensive position. He is insane in the run back. Polamalu is more of an field missile that is used to attack the QB or run game from angles not really expected in blitz packages, which is where you see the big sack or fumble or stop come in. They are both great, but they are both kind of different. I think Reed plays probably more 'home run' free safety in the back and you would say Polamalu is more of the strong safety playing up close to the line and used kind of like Woodson was with the Steelers (i.e. you have no idea where he is going to be lined up this play).

You got to deal with both of them, but you have to plan different for each of them.

earlnash, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

that's a stupid point

J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

for one most of ed reed's value obv comes from coverage/interceptions (where he is unmatched), secondly the ravens have one of the best d-line & lb groups in the nfl, so his opportunity to make tackles is likely substantially less than taylor mays

J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

Do you think a guy who had 37 tackles for the season should be the defensive MVP of the league?

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 February 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

I hope it works out and the guy is good, as if you look at it from a diffierent angle, it would be another cheap dick Mike Brown move to hire a coordinator out of the "UFL" to take over an "NFL" team. Then again, I think the Bengals are probably deserving of relegation to the CFL.

Bush would also count $16 million against the cap next year. Must be the pro-rated portion of his bonus. He's just a punt returner at this point.

Since Bush can actually catch a pass unlike the rest of the Giants' runnning backs, he would be a nice fit there.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 March 2011 05:00 (fourteen years ago)

Hawk does not suck, but he hasn't really lived up to his expectation as a 1st rounder. He actually seems to be good in the "field general" role and seems to have a high football IQ; he reads the offense well, knows where to direct his teammates, doesn't sit out much and generally does not make mistakes - he's just not really a big playmaker. He seems to be getting better...2010 was his best season, and he's definitely a guy that the Packers want to keep around, just not at superstar money. Apparently he got contacted by a bunch of other teams right away, and I can see why. He's worth more to the Packers than any other team so I'm glad they locked him up.

Dolphins Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall has been stabbed with a knife by a woman in the Miami area and taken to a hospital, where he remained in intensive care after surgery Saturday morning, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Marshall's wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall, 26, was arrested Friday by the Broward Sheriff's Office on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for the stabbing, a league source confirmed to Schefter. Nogami-Marshall remained in jail Saturday.

Marshall was taken to Broward General Hospital by car and underwent surgery late Friday night for a stab wound to the stomach, sources told Schefter.

No vital organs were pierced in the incident, and doctors have told him that Marshall will be OK in two to three weeks, sources said.

This is a very difficult time for Brandon and family, thankfully he will make a full recovery. We simply ask that his privacy is respected.
” -- Agents Kennard McGuire
and Harvey Steinberg, in a statement

"This is a very difficult time for Brandon and family, thankfully he will make a full recovery," Marshall's agents, Kennard McGuire and Harvey Steinberg, said in a statement. "We simply ask that his privacy is respected."

The NFL and the NFL Players' Association said through spokesmen they couldn't confirm details.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Thursday, 12 May 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

at least hes got buffalo wild wings commercials

Last week, I went to NFL Films for another NFL Top Ten studio session. Trips to NFL Films are always exciting, even if the energy at the facility itself was a little slack this time. The NFL Films cafeteria, which has been mentioned once or twice in past Walkthroughs (Rueben soup), has been closed as a cost-cutting measure during the lockout.

Closing the cafeteria makes little sense. It's a pay cafeteria, mind you, and not a cheap one. It's run by a food services contractor that probably bid for the right to set up shop. It's not a high school cafeteria, so I can't imagine there's some kind of league subsidy in place to make sure Ron Jaworski doesn't have to pay too much for his pierogies. NFL Films is in a huge commercial park, and the nearest food is about a mile away, across a busy highway in a crowded shopping complex, so the cafeteria had almost no competition and a large clientele of hungry people (remember, many staffers are ex-football players, and many interns are 24-year-old, 230-pound ex-Villanova linebackers) willing to pay for a hearty lunch. How can the NFL not make money off a cafeteria in these circumstances? Why, they have a virtual monopoly on an extremely desirable product that sells itself, yet they claim they must shut down food service in the name of protecting long-term profits! I cannot think of any analogy here.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Wife-of-Miami-Dolphins-WR-Brandon-Marshall-arrested-on-charges-of-violating-restraining-order-061011

Updated Jun 10, 2011 7:54 PM ET
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP)

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall's wife has been arrested again after previously being charged with stabbing him in the abdomen.

The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that deputies responded to a 911 hang-up at the couple's home Friday morning. Despite a protection order requiring her to stay at least 500 feet from the home, 27-year-old Michi Nogami-Marshall told deputies she had been living there while Marshall was out of town. When Marshall returned, an argument occurred, followed by the 911 call.

Deputies charged Nogami-Marshall with violating her pre-trial release. She remained in jail Friday evening. Online court records didn't list her attorney.

Nogami-Marshall was charged in April with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after Marshall was stabbed with a kitchen knife. He has since recovered.

Not really. the owners apparently only voted on a "proposal". There is still fine print that has to be worked out, and that's why the players have delayed their vote.

Though an email went out to NFL players Friday afternoon telling them the player reps planned to meet Monday, NFLPA leadership sources told ESPN that no meeting is scheduled, and their plan is to continue to work through the weekend.

Text of the letter, obtained by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

"Guys, To keep you abreast of the latest developments, we are reviewing the latest proposal for a settlement. Because of the passing of Myra Kraft in Boston, the NFLPA will not be making any public statements in honor of the Kraft family. Our recommendation is for everyone to stay put and keep doing what you are doing where you are doing it. We will meet again on Monday to discuss our options and the direction we want to go. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. Thanks for your patience. Your Player Reps."

I do fantasy leagues every year and they are fun, but hearing other people talk about fantasy football is a lot like hearing people talk about their WoW characters or something. Any fantasy story last year that didn't involve Vick's 60 point game was boring as hell. For whatever reason some people love to brag about their fantasy teams nonstop and it makes me want to kill them. I met a guy on a plane and we started talking football and he goes onto a 40 minute tirade about how awesome his team was and how unlucky he was to lose in Week 6 and holy shit that flight seemed to last 8 hours.

I benefitted from this last year, but it was against an opponent who'd already ditched their season and I beat a skeleton crew. Hollow victory!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

I played against the guy who had Vick in that game and lost by a point --- until Jared Allen was given back four points right before Week 11 began, pulling me ahead by three points.

That dude was (rightfully) pissed.

 (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

I will say as far as fantasy goes that I may have had the worst 4th place finish in a 14-team league ever. I started out 0-6, getting crushed every week. My QBs were Romo and Derek Anderson. In Week 7, things turned around and I finished 6-7, including two wins in which I had the second-lowest point total for the week but got the lucky matchup. I got the 8 seed in the playoffs and beat the 1 seed b/c Aaron Rodgers went down that week. I still remember that roster - Reggie Bush (sucked), Romo (hurt), Derek Anderson (awful), Crabtree (who?), Derrick Mason (dissapointing), Eddie Royal (Broncos lol), Miami defense (puke), all that and I had the #1 pick, Chris Johnson.

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

Looking forward to a season without having to look at Derrick Mason on the waivers, for two reasons.

1.) Clicking on his stats usually brought up a window that said "Really? Derrick Mason? There isn't any other WR available this week? Really?"

and 2.) I know the singer's name is Dave, but still. Seeing D. Mason always immediately brought that song "We Just Disagree" into my head, each and every time.

Damn. There it is again. There ain't no good times. There ain't no bad times.

ok, here are my picks for the season:

NFC East: Eagles
NFC West: Rams
NFC North: Packers
NFC South: Falcons
Wild Cards: Saints and Giants

AFC East: Patriots
AFC West: Chargers
AFC North: Ravens
AFC South: Colts
Wild Cards: Steelers and Jets

I know, these picks are very unimaginative. Besides the Rams, Giants, and Chargers, all these teams made the playoffs in 2010. I'm just saying that these are the "obvious" picks now so I want to put them here for posterity and see how I did in January. Obviously no season ever really winds up as predicted, case in point the 2010 Cowboys who were supposed to be the first team to play the SB in their own stadium. Other predictions:

NFCCG: Eagles vs. Packers
Packers will repeat (fingers crossed!)
NFC West champ will have at least 9 wins
Carolina will lose every game
Tampa Bay and Detroit will both prove to be overrated
The Cowboys will be one of the strongest teams, but smothered by a great division

Then the Sheagles are the greatest team of all time despite never winning a Super Bowl since EVER. Then Osi keeps acting like a dickhead. Then Plaxico signs with the fucking Jets. Then a key reserve cornerback tears his Achilles. Then Kevin Boss chooses Al Davis’s rotting corpse over Kate Mara’s smoking hot bod. Then the new TE Ben Patrick retires after like 4 days on the team. Then the 1st round pick practices for 2 fucking days before shattering his foot. Oh yeah and the best possession receiver in the game is still unsigned and 2+ months away from being healthy enough to even step on the field. Just leaves 1 question for Giants fans out there. yeah this rule change really sucks if you're a fan of the Eagles or Bears b/c it really takes away something from guys like Devin Hester and DeSean, but it does make sense if you contemplate how easy it is to get hurt when you have two teams of quick-footed 280-pound men running full speed into each other

janikowski played that night though, so that throws things off.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 13 August 2011 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

Also a lot of the non-touchbacks were coaches telling their guys to run it out no matter what just to make sure that the special teams got reps.

yea i know it's double, i read that same article, but still 2/3rds of the kicks were returned.

i mean hell the NFL did kickoffs from the 35 for years prior to 1994, and there were still kickoff returns for TDs. this isn't some 'brand new' thing. it's gonna increase touchbacks, yes, but it's not like every kick is going out the back of the endzone.

First half:

I had the Patriots for 10.5 quarterback pressures, eight quarterback hits, two sacks, one knockdown and three holding penalties (all drawn by Andre Carter). I keep those all separately, so a sack doesn’t count as a QB hit. That’s 23 total quarterback pressures on 23 drop backs (including three holding penalties). That is an unreal number. I think I counted three plays the Buccaneers blocked properly, and the first didn’t come until there was 10:55 left to play in the first half.

he would have like 2,000 yds receiving

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:26 (fourteen years ago)

Megatron ran a 4.34.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

at 239.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:28 (fourteen years ago)

Usain Bolt is over 200lbs now I think, but he's gotten slower.

boxall, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

true olympic quality sprinters would run under 4.1 in the 40.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:30 (fourteen years ago)

like a guy like Jacoby Ford runs a 4.28-- he's little, he's obviously super fast, but he's not even an elite college sprinter. It's a different kind of athlete.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:32 (fourteen years ago)

actually I guess he was technically elite in college... But not olympic level. The guys who can get under 10 seconds are so rare.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

I would say Jeff Demps, Trindon Holliday, Jacoby Ford are/were all legit Olympic-level at the 100m. 40 yards in cleats on grass is a lot different. Bolt probably wouldn't even be your best bet at going 4.1 because his start is a relative weakness.

xpost Demps has run 9.96, Holliday and Ford both 10.01.

boxall, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:36 (fourteen years ago)

they would certainly be olympic level if they weren't american (or Jamaican).

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

Demps is going back to Florida so maybe he can be the first under 4.2 before next year's draft. I think he's also in the USA team to run the 4x100m relay at the world championships next week, not sure though.

boxall, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

according to legend Bo Jackson ran a 4.12. I think that has to be incorrect, but he was special for sure. And his running form was very track-star-like.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

pyror's 40 times today were unofficial -- he's probably up closer around 4.6, which is still nuts for a guy his size, but 4.3 would be like inhuman

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

The accepted standard to convert a hand-timed event to its automatically timed equivalent is to round up to the nearest tenth of a second – in this case 4.4 – and add .24 seconds. Now you're at 4.64.

so pryor's looking more at 4.6 or 4.7

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

Most football 40s don't go on a starter's pistol but on an athlete's motion. The average reaction time among elite sprinters (from the gun to the moment they exert pressure on the starting block's electronic pads) is about .15 seconds; for a football player with little track experience it probably would be closer to .2

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 August 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, it's all relative. He ran a 4.38 in "NFL scout time."

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

i.e. he's a slightly smaller, slightly slower Calvin Johnson-- a total monstrous athletic freak.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)

in any event, if this guy doesn't go in the first round of the supplemental draft, teams are nuts

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

i'd happily relinquish the dolphins 2012 first round pick for him. i think it's a worthy gamble. beats taking christian ponder at #12 or tebow in the first round or andy dalton in the top 50 at least

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

http://i.imgur.com/JLyS8.gif

i... i dunno dude. at least cam newton can make some serious nfl throws once in a blue moon. pryor flat out can't play quarterback. he has almost no skills that translate to the position. i dont see how it's a 'worthy gamble' to try and build around a terrible player. even if he was better than newton, cam was a crappy 1st round pick (let alone first overall) so im still not seeing the relative value. pryor's a practice squad arm with some upside or a position switch candidate, any team that sees him as more deserves to become a laughing stock.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i_qxQztHRI (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno i think you kind of have to gamble w/ a qb... clearly the draft market has dictated that qb is the most premium position in football, and if ponder & locker are top 12 picks, i don't think it's crazy to say that pryor is on that level. provided of course that his background checks out & all and you're not drafting a ballooning godzilla like jamarcus. but you need a star at that position, i think pryor could develop into something close to that w/ good coaching. you can't teach the athleticism at least.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:35 (fourteen years ago)

AdamSchefter Adam Schefter
Filed to ESPN: Arizona will sign WR Larry Fitzgerald to a record 8-year, $120 million deal that includes close to $50 million guaranteed.

well hello there

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

& the way i understand it w/ the supplemental draft, you might end up overpicking if your season bombs, or if you have a good season than maybe you got a good deal. but if the dolphins ended up right back at 15 like they were in this past draft, i'd feel totally comfortable getting pryor there considering where QBs went in the last draft

J0rdan S., Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

oh man ochocinco and southie jerome? i might have to almost like that team

mookieproof, Sunday, 21 August 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno i think you kind of have to gamble w/ a qb

some gambles are smarter than others! locker is a major risk with a ton of development ahead of him - i think it'd be better to use him as an example of how not to draft than as justification for making an even crappier decision. i do like ponder more, but not with the 12th pick. i probably wouldn't have taken any QB in the first round this year. and sure, you can't teach athleticism - but you're gonna have to teach this guy (gruden voice) literally everything else that it takes to play the position. i'd rather just turn him (or tebow, or locker) into a TE and draft someone with an actual pro skillset.

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 August 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

Third round! Hmm. Thought he might go earlier. That seems about right. RIP T Pryor.

johnny crunch, Monday, 22 August 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 August 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's not like they have a great QB there.

polyphonic, Monday, 22 August 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

raiders should just go directly to the elite level athlete pool and wave that good nfl cash in front of some olympic teams. get some receivers and DBs who can do 100m dash in 10 secs. get some wrestlers and weightlifters for linemen. who needs football skills?

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 22 August 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

They've done that before tbh. James Jett, for example.

polyphonic, Monday, 22 August 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

Raiders drafted players with fastest 40 times at the past 3 combines -- DeMarcus Van Dyke, Jacoby Ford, Darrius Heyward-Bey -- plus Pryor.

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 August 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

A Raiders source told ESPN.com's John Clayton that the team is looking at Pryor more as receiver than a quarterback at the NFL level.

polyphonic, Monday, 22 August 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

a jacoby ford i guess i can deal with, if you have a real hard on for fast players. 4th round, take a punt. even 3rd isn't horrible for pryor, especially with the attention he had been getting probably inflating things. it's just the self-parodying pattern of doing it over and over that grates. and of course, the heyward-bey draft was just...something else.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 22 August 2011 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

heyward-bey was obv completely indefensible

J0rdan S., Monday, 22 August 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

Contracts of Campbell, Edwards and Boller expire at end of season. Terrelle Pryor might be only 2011 QB back in 2012.

With the T. Pryor selection in the third round, the Raiders may be without No. 2 No. 3 and No. 4 picks in 2012 draft.

johnny crunch, Monday, 22 August 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

two of those moves are potentially defensible, the other was a trade for jason campbell

great moments in long snapper history

Ryan David Pontbriand (born October 1, 1979) is an American football long snapper and center who currently plays for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. Pontbriand played collegiately at Rice University, and was drafted in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Browns. Pontbriand has the distinction of being the highest-drafted long snapper in the history of the NFL Draft.[1]
