xp from the old thread, but damn do the falcons get screwed--their "prize" for the 1 seed is playing the wild card packers.

"This is about Bill Belichick versus Rex Ryan," Ryan said, addressing the upcoming showing in Foxborough for the first time. "There's no question, it's personal. It's about him against myself. That's what it's going to come down to."

"I might have a little quickness on him, he's probably got a little more strength and power on me," Belichick said Monday on a conference call. "I don't think you'll see either of us out there making any blocks, or tackles, or runs throws or catches. At least you won't see me doing that. It's probably a good thing for our team."

Can't stand either of them but frankly hope that Ryan gets completely pantsed in this matchup.

mookieproof, Friday, 14 January 2011 02:53 (fourteen years ago)

AFC is like the lesser of all evils left, I don't want any of them to win.

Criminy now that Bruschi and Harrison are gone, the Pats are looking a bit less evil than usual to me, which is screwy.

I don't want to live in a world where the Jets win, as it would probably upset the big apple cart and they would talk about over and over and over. Criminy we know about Broadway Joe and Willis Reed, but let it go you know.

I never liked the Steelers and I definitely don't want to see them win 3 superbowls in a decade. Polamalu makes some pretty insane plays, criminy he twice hurdled the line and got a sack this year. That's kind of nuts. Big Ben went from being a likable doofus to a fratboy perv, so I can't cheer for him. Hines Ward and James Harrison both seem like cheap pricks, I can admire that they are are good, but I don't like 'em.

Ravens have burned me for years. I get how good Ray Lewis is but the guy talks about football like he is fighting in 'Nam. I dig the Old Spice commercials and Lewis doesn't quite lay it on as thick as a few years back, but the guy takes his job sometimes a bit too serious. Ed Reed is freakishly good and to me the best player they ever had, criminy I never saw any other defensive player (even Deon) be able to take turnovers and turn them into offensive plays like that. Then again, I think Harbaugh isn't as punchable as Billick was, who always seemed to come off like his crap didn't stink (QB guru who lorded over defensive team - couldn't get ANY of the QBs to become good enough to win it again). (Funny enough I think he is ok doing games.)

yeah I kinda agree with that. I want the Jets to get their comeuppance, george amberson minifer style, but SOMEONE has to stop the Pats. right now I almost feel like I'd be okay w/the Jets winning a SB, but don't hold me to that

Princess TamTam, Friday, 14 January 2011 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

i imagine this has been discussed elsewhere on the last week thread, but Ed Reed laid an open field tackle on a KC player in that game that was damn near the most vicious legal hit I've ever seen. dude jerked back like he'd been hit by a car.

Glenn Cromartie

J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

I've decided not to bet this week, partially because some of these games are too close to call, and also because I just want to enjoy my football without having to have it end a certain way.

my picks

Ravens at Steelers: I can't pick the home team in all four games, numbers tell us it's impossible. Based on no actual football analysis, and just a gut feeling, I'm picking Baltimore.
Packers at Falcons: It's hard for me to pick against Rodgers after that lights out game last week, but the Falcons have a major chip on their shoulder after their first round exit in 2008 -- I think they'll seal the deal this time.
C-Hawks at Bears: Unless the Bears sat around all week watching Richard Bey reruns, they should win this easily.
Jets at Patriots: I don't think the Jets are strong enough to knock off the Patriots on the road. Sorry. As much as I want them to lose, the Jets winning almost feels like losing as well. Rather somebody beat the Pats next round.

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 15 January 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

I usually like to pull for the team with either less postseason/Super Bowl success for the team that ain't won one, but three of the AFC teams have won a Super Bowl in the last ten years, and the one that hasn't is a team I loathe vehemently.

I'm guessing out of the AFC I'd rather see the Ravens go. NFC has more interesting angles IMO -- Packers going would be awes cuz of the obvious Rodgers factor, Falcons are overdue for their first SB win....http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png and Bears = bleh, both have been recently and wouldn't care to see them therea gain.

of course, a Patriots-Packers SB 'rematch' could be interesting.

polyphonic, Saturday, 15 January 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

i almost think the proficiency of the league's QBs is at the point where they can relax the rule, I understood why the NFL wanted to emphasize ticky tack shit back when people like Matt Hasslebeck is the top passer in a conference

the only time I've ever seen something like that before was in 06 when a punter inadvertently got tackled as someone in the crowd made a noise that sounded like a whistle, but there's not even any type of noise during that play that resembled anything like a tweet or whistle. what a dumb moment to have a brain lapse

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

I love this game already

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:27 (fourteen years ago)

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

can see the Steelers starting to unravel a little. momentum solely with Ravens atm

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

really think Tomlin shoulda rethought that second challenge. he had to know he couldn't challenge that there was a whistle, and I doubt he even had a chance to look at a replay before he threw it...I don't believe you challenge a costly fumble like that just to do it, especially when you know that if you're wrong, you're out of them.

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

now that's a tackle

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

this is gonna be a chess match. sad that I'm gonna miss the end.

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

I really really like the rule change they made to the forceout rule. makes it much easier to officiate inbounds catches

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

strawberry shartcake (San Te), Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

and then he comes back to a big conversion to sanders. other than holding the ball ben is really good, and it took me a long time to be able to admit that.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 15 January 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

I always thought Ben becoming a big game passer as opposed to being a solid passer in a ball control offense would hurt the Steelers identity but he raelly managed to be the x-factor they needed to push them over the top.

that said, he seems to do something every other offseason that makes you want to like him less and less.

I just meant teams aren't as nervous handing over the reins to rookie QBs anymore after Ben's hot rookie season, some teams had to out of necessity (ie the Jets), and Matt Ryan contributed to it too....Ben probably had the best rookie season of any QB in 15+ years in 04

well having it for two steps doesn't really constitute a catch...it's just the stupid way the NFL defines their rules, like they no longer requirea "football move", but clearly he never had full control of the ball, so I think they made the right call. had he had the ball a second or two longer, it would have been a catch and fumble.

there's a reason the NFL is referred to as one of the most overofficiated sports

call all destroyer, Sunday, 16 January 2011 03:43 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really think it's Ryan's fault tho, in all seriousness. Rodgers did pick the Falcs defense apart. but given how the media works, Ryan will have the stigma of not being able to win playoff games, no matter how unfair it is. and then when he wins one, he'll shed it...just like all other QBs.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Sunday, 16 January 2011 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

that should have said "all Ryan's fault"

five deadly venoms (San Te), Sunday, 16 January 2011 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

That INT was on the coaches not Matty Ice. Not only was it a horrible decision to go for it, but the playcall was retardedly obvious.

so when do pitchers and catchers report

Princess TamTam, Sunday, 16 January 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

the playcall was overtly aggressive, yes, and the coaching staff is at fault for that, but Ryan locked in on his receiver and still made an ill-advised throw.

but still can't pin the entire loss on Ryan, being how effortlessly Rodgers moved the ball up the field on the Falcons D. but regardless Ryan will get scapegoated in many circles.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Sunday, 16 January 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

"If my team has Flacco or Ryan at QB I am definitely investing in the running game because I don't think they're in the same league with the elite QBs. They are ... McNabb-esque?"

Winning in the NFL is an odd alchemy. You got to have a balence between your offense, defense and special teams and be able to avoid mistakes. Brady and Big Ben early on won championships as they were on really good all around teams that had one of the best defenses in the league (and pretty much good at everything). They have also continued to improve.I think Flacco and Ryan are both pretty amazing, they have been starters their whole time in the pros and three seasons in have improved each and every year. That just doesn't happen very often and the other recent ones that pulled it off are like Manning, Big Ben and McNabb. You got to be pretty good to walk in out of college and not only start in the NFL and then thrive. I wouldn't throw them under the bus yet at all. Aaron Rogers got to drive the golf cart for three years and is on a club that has very stable setup, even with some coaching changes, they still run pretty much the same west coast style offense that was put in nearly 20 years ago by Holmgren. Their clubs had bad games and they lost, it happens.

I'd say the Ravens O-line is a bit pourous on blitzes leaving Flacco wide open to get popped. Same thing happened left and right to Rogers in GB a couple of years ago. Ravens couls also use some real speed at WR. They have some vets (couple of which dropped some big passes), but none of them are speed threats.

Falcons just had a bad game all around. The Pack just whipped the Atlanta defense, they got some pass rush, but they couldn't cover bupkus.

McNabb was great for a long time and won quite a few games early on with really middling skills players. He had a bad year, but I wouldn't throw him in the trash yet. I could believe him going to say Arizona and then all of the sudden - he is good again. McNabb is past his prime, but I don't think he is ready for the scrap yard. It's not easy to win it all. It is a team game.

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 16 January 2011 06:02 (fourteen years ago)

the ravens gained 126 yards on 53 offensive plays

between that and the turnovers and the dropped passes, it's kind of amazing they were that close

Am available for stunt double work fyi

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 16 January 2011 06:40 (fourteen years ago)

I wouldn't throw him in the trash yet.

I would. McNabb is done.

Ryan and Flacco I will withhold judgment. Clearly Flacco got no help from his receivers today, but he didn't impress me either.

The thing that bugs me about both of these guys is that they have a lot of quality skill players around them and good offensive lines, and still they look small against great teams.

polyphonic, Sunday, 16 January 2011 06:54 (fourteen years ago)

I do think McNabb could have another quality season or two in him, especially if goes to a place like Arizona (where he lives) that has real offensive talent instead of pee-wee players.

As for Ryan and Flacco, they're third year players. That's about all I have to say about that. Eli didn't really break out until his 5th season. Rodgers is on his sixth. You can tell R&F are still developing, they're unfinished products.

Princess TamTam, Sunday, 16 January 2011 07:11 (fourteen years ago)

I would hate to think that McNabb is done. I mean, what little we saw of him this season wasnt facepalmingly awful...so, done based on what?

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 16 January 2011 07:37 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think he'll ever win another playoff game, basically. Obviously he can still play QB in the NFL.

polyphonic, Sunday, 16 January 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

I'd like to know that for sure before I write him off.

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 16 January 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

Prognostication and surety are rarely fellow travelers.

polyphonic, Sunday, 16 January 2011 07:51 (fourteen years ago)

I've said it before, you can be good, but in the NFL much much more than say baseball or basketball, where you play is much more tied to how good you become.

Jim Plunkett was one of the worst first round busts ever and then into his 30s won two Superbowls.

Rich Gannon was a total journeyman backup, hooked up with a good coach and won an MVP in his 30s.

Kurt Warner looked completely washed up with the Giants and yet he had a nice couple of seasons in Arizona.

Randall Cunningham completely came out of nowhere and won an MVP with the Vikings after injuries had almost battered him out of football.

I'd say McNabb would be a good canidate to be excellent again. While he can't run like he did, he is still a fairly mobile QB and he still has a good arm. Those are the two things that usually kill a career. The Redskins are a grease fire. That team wouldn't win with Joe Montana or YA Tittle in their prime.

earlnash, Sunday, 16 January 2011 08:12 (fourteen years ago)

what Earlnash said :)

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 16 January 2011 08:14 (fourteen years ago)

Jesus Christ what a sick game by Rodgers. I mean a lot of Packers played well but I haven't seen a playoff performance that great that wasn't from Kurt Warner (who is also pretty sick). Bring on the Bears!! (or hatcat?)

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 16 January 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

Why do you kick a field goal? 28-0 is not really any different than 28-3.

I feel like NFL-N should offer a Gus Johnson feed of the Super Bowl. Just have Fox or CBS or NBC be whoever their guys are and then have alternate commentary.

C-L, Sunday, 16 January 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

That wd be sweet

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 16 January 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

why the hell did jeremy bates call two straight fades

J0rdan S., Sunday, 16 January 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

wait did hasselbeck have a wide open receiver there & instead throw the fade into double coverage

daria-g, Sunday, 16 January 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

btw have you guys seen the Big Ten Network commercials where they advertise having Gus Johnson call games by basically airing 30 seconds of Gus Johnson screaming about college basketball? They are the best thing.

Oh look the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png scored a TD, that's fun.

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extra_points/2011/01/report_welker_b.html

Bill Belichick apparently didn't find the humor in Wes Welker's infamous press conference this week.

Welker referenced the word "foot" or some variation 11 times during his Thursday meeting with the media, a subversive dig at Jets coach Rex Ryan's alleged personal peccadilloes.

CBS, which is broadcasting today's Jets-Patriots matchup, reported just before opening kickoff that Welker has been benched for some portion of the game. The duration of the benching was uncertain.

PATRIOTS (-8.5) over Jets

Key Player: I keep thinking of Bill Belichick going into his office last Sunday, popping in that Colts-Jets tape, watching Mark Sanchez's passes sailing away like helium balloons at a 5-year-old's birthday party, then thinking to himself, Should I just start scouting Pittsburgh and Baltimore now?

Possible Playoff Doppelganger: Cowboys 34, Eagles 10 (Jan. 10, 1993). I thought we'd go way back to mix it up. What about the '92 Cowboys as nine-point favorites against a bitter division rival in Round 2? Maybe the Pats won't celebrate the game at the White House by snorting a pound of cocaine afterward, but everything else could unfold the same way.

Relevant E-Mails (from my friend Jay): "I want [Danny] Woodhead to drop-kick the extra point when we're up 34-3" and "I'm so looking forward to Belichick giving Ryan a completely perfunctory handshake in the middle of the field. Message: You're just another guy to me. Now get out of my way." Five months of Rex Ryan bluster has sent Patriots fans into full-fledged "Eff You" Mode. If you told Pats fans, "You could have a 100 percent chance of winning by three, or a 60 percent chance of winning by 50 and a 40 percent chance of losing," we'd all take the three-point victory … but only after a ton of deliberation.

But you know what? I love Rex Ryan for this. My favorite league (the NBA) has been compromised by a buddy system and a commissioner who seems to be worried that two guys yapping competitively on a basketball court could lead to guns being drawn or another Kermit Washington punch. He's done his best to remove all traces of animosity from his sport, for better and worse. Rex and the Jets thrive on that animosity. Or they like to think they do. At least they're interesting. And now that we have that settled, I hope the Pats win by 40 and Danny Woodhead drop-kicks the last PAT.

Heroes You Might Not Have Expected: Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski … or, as they'll be known when we combine them in my fantasy league next year, Aarob Gronkandez. Any time you can team up Gronkandez and Ben-Danvis Greenwood-Ellishead, you have something special.

Possible Tragic Figure: If the Jets pull off an upset, we'll look back at Wes Welker's clever press conference (heavy with deadpan foot references) as the turning point. I'm already dreading Monday's New York Post with Welker's picture and "FOOT IN MOUTH" as the headline. Did I just jinx it from happening? Please tell me I did.

Obscure Gambling Tip: The AFC is favored by only four points over the NFC in the Super Bowl. On a neutral field right now, I think Vegas would favor the Patriots by six over Green Bay, seven over Atlanta, 14 over Seattle and 8½ over Chicago. But what do I know?

"Jersey Shore" Parallel: On this week's show, Snooki said, "I will pee in a bush, I will poop in a bush, and I will hide in a bush." Is it a bad sign for Jets fans that the quote made me think of Mark Sanchez?

Theories In Play: "Never take a shaky QB on the road," "If you're picking an underdog, you better think it can win," "Don't be a hero, just try to win money," "Before you make a decision, take one last look at the quarterbacks" and "Never take the cameraman in multiple foot-fetish videos in a playoff game against Bill Belichick."

The Pick: Patriots 34, Jets 17

so who's the SB favorites now?? god Green Bay SB would be so epic, especially considering this was the year Favre was supposed to come back better than ever and crush everyone

frogbs, Monday, 17 January 2011 01:39 (fourteen years ago)

That was last year. I think everyone knew Favre was going to blow this year, including Favre.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 17 January 2011 01:41 (fourteen years ago)

i think the trendy/sexy pick is gonna be the Steelers, but somehow I don't see it happening that way

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 01:41 (fourteen years ago)

Rooting for Steelers to get in the SB, but want the Packers to go all the way (would also accept a Bears being winners, though). NFC NFC NFC!

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 17 January 2011 01:43 (fourteen years ago)

yea my fav pick for the SB is Packers-Steelers....would love to see Rodgers get a ring

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 01:45 (fourteen years ago)

I'd think the picks by the talking heads will lean hard to the Packers and probably split between the Steelers and Jets.

I'm a Bears fan, so I know what I want, but I think it is going to be tough to happen.

earlnash, Monday, 17 January 2011 01:48 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like the faves have to be the pack? yeah, they're playing on the road, but they're also playing awesomely. i mean, they *destroyed* a top seed on the road and the three remaining teams are not without their flaws

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

who's the SB favorites now??

jets gonna be a popular pick this week.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 17 January 2011 01:50 (fourteen years ago)

hate to say it, but jets "destroyed" a top seed on the road, too.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 17 January 2011 01:51 (fourteen years ago)

Jets last two weeks are good illustration that defense wins games, as they pretty much held down two future hall of fame QBs and their high powered passing game. Offense played well enough to win, has not made many mistakes and have gotten some big plays in the passing game. Next week will be a different kind of challenge, as they are going to be playing a club in the Steelers, which like the Ravens is a pretty similar club.

The Packers look fantastic. Their QB is playing as well as you can play. GB's defense has looked good all year, as those linebackers are just destructive. Their biggest weakness in the running game has been minimized. A big difference I see on this years Packers club right now over the past few years is that they are also not getting killed by dumb penalties. I'd say the Packers have the best recieving corps left in the playoffs, as they are just very good and quite deep.

Bears have been playing pretty well down the stretch, but it is a bit harder to quantify their big win over the http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png, as that club other than last week hasn't been that good. That said, their defense is very solid and when they can run the ball a bit and avoid mistakes, they are pretty good. Cutler and the speed of the Bears recieving corps does give them a good deep ball strike.

The Steelers defense is as strong as ever and even though they throw the ball a ton, they can still control the ball. They looked pretty good today. I don't think they will blow out anyone left, but I think any game with them will be close.

earlnash, Monday, 17 January 2011 02:00 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not quite sure how to take what we saw today from the Bears. Seattle looked awful the entire game and Carroll did not even try to win it after Chicago was up 28-0. Tons of dropped passes (and an int or two) and a weird tendency to let 5-yard run plays go for 12. Just crazy that next week's Packer/Bear game is going to be the biggest in the history of the rivalry..

frogbs, Monday, 17 January 2011 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

you mean during that whole time pack/bears have never met in the title game? weird. anyway GO PACK

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

1941 in a semi-finals game was the last time the Bears and Packers met in a playoff game.

yeah yeah yeah

it's kind of disturbing how flat they've been in the past 4-5 playoff games that i remember. on the other hand the defense is iirc the youngest in the league, at the start of the season this was expected to be a rebuilding year basically.

can i just say though, <3 the pats 4-ever but a lot of their fans SUCK. the stadium was half empty toward the end of the 4th quarter - wtf? i don't think colts fans bail out of there when peyton is down by 3 scores in the 4th!

all sorts of weirdness from the pats. idk what was up with brady, people @ pats message board observing that belichick was yelling at the offensive play caller to pass the ball instead of running it & running down the clock in the 4th..

i dunno. a lot of pats fans (not here!) are so spoiled. booing the team at halftime when they're only down by 10, freaking out whenever things don't go their way. nobody wins the super bowl every year. peyton has one. steelers have two. i mean, redskins have one playoff win in a decade. and they're all like "PATS 0-3 IN LAST 3 PLAYOFF GAMES = DISASTER" .. really?

going east-west rather than north-south

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:13 (fourteen years ago)

Current fair-weather Pats fans need to talk to some 49ers fans and learn to enjoy it while it lasts.

Even Steelers fans went through 20+ years of some good teams, some middling football and many playoff losses between championships. Bill Cowher was in the end just a shoelace tackle away from being one of those guys who never won it all.

In my mind I was wondering how long it would take for the Pats/Brady playoff losing streak meme to start, looks like it is already here.

earlnash, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:13 (fourteen years ago)

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)

these games are 60 minutes. you need to make a play down the field in a hostile environment without losing yr swagger, even if you're not the sexy pick. you gotta stay within yourselves without doing too much.

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

you have to get it done. the pats didnt get it done and thats what ultimately cost them against the jets

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

it might be an upset of major proportions, but you can't lose composure. you have to orchestrate a drive en route to scoring early and often.

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

establishing the ground game is the key -- then you can take a shot down the field.

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

after you've set the tone early, then you can stretch the field vertically and get to your vertical passing game

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

ultimately, however, it is, of course, what it is

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

at the end of the day

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:21 (fourteen years ago)

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

the whole "wanting it more" cliche has always driven me nuts. because when it comes down to it, the years of weight training, conditioning, positional experience, game film watching, and toil on the field apparently have less to do with the outcome than Team A giving 13% more of a fuck about the result than Team B.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

actually i kind of vaguely buy into that one. the nfl tries desperately to hide this fact from the fans, but these guys are doing a job. sure, they want to win, but is it worth as much to them to go over the middle and get killed as it is to the fans? no.

nfl games are heated and violent and i'm sure the best players are passionate at all times, but, you know, it's not worth getting paralyzed or whatever to please the local constituents

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:44 (fourteen years ago)

yea but it negates the fact that teams can want it all and fail all the time. which often does happen....wanting something badly can cause you to get overanxious and fuck up if you don't control your emotions.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

or, in contrast, teams that sleepwalk to championships (which really doesn't happen as much in football as it does other sports given how complex of a game it is)

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)

it's easier to explain "this team wanted it more" to fans than it is to explain Xs and Os i suppose. i wish there were commentators who spent whole game focusing on all the stuff that is just luck, chance, and blown/missed calls on the part of the refs

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

o i'm hardly saying it's the only factor, but i think that it *is* a factor, perhaps, and thus worth mentioning by the commentators whether they've reason to or not. like, don't pull that cliche out until you see a receiver with t.rex hands or whatever

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

i mean what if chung hadn't dropped the snap on the fake punt.. well what if the coaches hadn't given chung the authority to call the fake punt (which apparently was what happened according to the punter?)

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

*when* they've reason to, that is

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

I just wish there werent so many shortcuts in football commentary.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

it isn't even that hard -- everyone knows you send the wideouts this way and that. it just takes someone to point out that this guard pulled here and this tackle went to the second level and hit a linebacker. but ppl are too busy with cliches

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

miss u madden, although you are remembered primarily for bam and tofurkey

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 03:57 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not discounting desire, either, but desire also isn't a collective thing either, like a team is a unit but they're all individuals at the end of the day.

I mean it's a factor for sure but it's a grand oversimplfication and an annoying cliche. I'm not asking announcers to sum up a game in football nerdspeak, but ya know pointing out something like "Team A really employed a defensive gameplan that was effective against TEam B" is a good middle ground.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 03:57 (fourteen years ago)

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 04:00 (fourteen years ago)

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:02 (fourteen years ago)

like I remember my high school football team my sophomore year getting crushed by our biggest rival, who we hadn't beaten in years, and I was real upset and angry about how bad they played and told everyone up and down that obviously our team didn't want it enough, and they just didn't give effort, and then some dude asked me "dude, did you see them in the locker room? I did, and trust me....they wanted it".

in truth they were just a vastly inferior football team at all of the skill positions and they were lucky the blowout wasn't worse!

likewise I think the Patriots looked better than they were due to that insane string of blowout wins late in the season, but unlike the 2007 squad, they were very soft in areas defensively.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Monday, 17 January 2011 04:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, pats defense was always suspect, they were giving up a ton of yards even when winning & the whole secondary is 1st/2nd year players (meriweather 3rd year maybe?). leigh bodden and ty warren were lost for the season in training camp. and it seemed like they were constantly losing guys on the defensive line

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

I'm kind of surprised that folks are talking about the Pats D itt. I think their defense did everything they needed to in this game and the failure was completely on the side of the offense.

The Jets secondary played incredibly well. They were all over the Pats receivers, who looked out-of-sync a lot of the time. Brady was also under lots of pressure, his offensive line was pretty weak.

And the fake punt was just a terrible call. They should never have tried it, probably could have won if they hadn't.

Moodles, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

Agree that Pats playcalling was awful, particularly in the first half.

Moodles, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

if what zoltan the punter said in the postgame is accurate, my understanding is -> fake punt wasn't a call by the coaches, but by chung who was playing special teams had the authority to change the call if he saw something. in this case i guess they had a mismatch on blocking & it would've worked had he not fumbled the snap?

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

wow what they let that guy call trick plays if he feels like, far out - seems it totally wouldve worked had he you know caught the ball

ice cr?m, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:29 (fourteen years ago)

also wonder if the pats should've found a way to keep seymour

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:29 (fourteen years ago)

xpost yes, that's exactly right!

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

I guess it makes sense that players can call audibles based on what they see on the field. However, whatever mismatch they saw on the field, it was totally the wrong situation in the game for such a call.

I think it's a little weird that fake punt is a call that the players can make. That would be the kind of play that I'd think would only ever happen because the coach specifically scripted it or brought it out under very specific circumstances (not these ones).

Moodles, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

i bet brady is mad at belichick right now

ice cr?m, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:32 (fourteen years ago)

I bet he's wondering why they were relying almost entirely on running plays and play action when he's so much better working out of the shotgun.

Moodles, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:34 (fourteen years ago)

and why did Brady pass to Crumpler 3 times?

Moodles, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:35 (fourteen years ago)

i think some teams -- at least teams with adventurous coaches -- let a special teams player have the option. remember when steve weatherford did that fake punt from inside the jets 20 on like 4th & 18 earlier this year? in the press conference afterward rex said that the fake goes on his call

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 January 2011 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

Belichik maybe a bit too adventurous in this game.

Moodles, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:39 (fourteen years ago)

i was thinking too that the pats play calling was wack but idk... the jets DBs played so well that i think they had to do maybe more running than they would've liked

thing is, watching the game i thought they hit 150 pass yards or something.

why did brady pass to crumpler? pressure + nobody was open! crumpler is like.. at least 5th receiver he'd go to

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:44 (fourteen years ago)

It was fun for me watching the Jets celebrating like assholes just a few years after Tomlinson whined about the Pats celebrating like assholes.

polyphonic, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:53 (fourteen years ago)

pats moved the ball easily on those first two drives and i think the game would've been very different without either the interception or the td drop, both of which were totally inexcusable bonehead plays. jets D seemed to take heart from that and they played lights out for much of the rest of the game, great coverage but still consistent pressure. pats D did well, especially since the offense couldn't stay on the field for half the game. the only breakdown was the big holmes catch after they got back within 3, and that looked like a terrible play selection - huge space to exploit on just about the only throw sanchez could consistently make, holmes over the middle. the two teams' performances were actually very similar, but the pats just made way too many mistakes in every department, and decision making from the coaches and from brady was often disappointing. and even so, they were unlucky on both onsides. ehhh, whatever. i am super bummed - double bummed, because now this stupid jets team, the most annoying team i can remember in any sport, is jet again on lucky game away from the fuckin super bowl. end times shit.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:55 (fourteen years ago)

I expect nothing less than full Jet humiliation from your storied Steelers, mookie.

So this terrible towel: clockwise or anti clockwise ?

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:04 (fourteen years ago)

tbh i'm thinking i rather jets beat the steelers (and then lose to the packers in the SB obvs). steelers -> rapey QB, some dirty players, for some reason have randle el returning punts, also they have enough super bowls.

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:11 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 17 January 2011 05:12 (fourteen years ago)

haha, i skipped the games today because i assumed they'd be blowouts. god bless you, Jets! FUCK YOU BRADY! WHATSAMATTER DID YOUR HAIR GET IN YOUR EYES BUDDY!!!

i know the Jets are heels, but they're a lot more fun to root for than any previous incarnation of the team. I can root for them and the Bears with a ~clear conscience~

Princess TamTam, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:13 (fourteen years ago)

I don't wanna watch the Jets in the suoerbowl. I can't. I just...today was bad enough, watching them win again? No. This shall not stand

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

If you can do it for the Cowboys, you can do it for the Jets.

THEN hope they get humiliated in the SB by the Packers or Bears.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 17 January 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

i've always liked the bears. i'd have rooted for them over the rest of the nfc usually, but packers franchise are socialists and they have <3<3<3 aaron rodgers <3<3<3 and the best chance to beat the afc team, neither of whom i want to see win a SB

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

packers > bears > steelers w/any other QB > jets > favre > steelers w/rapey QB > al qaeda > dallas cowboys

daria-g, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:23 (fourteen years ago)

Right. Barring any tru Steelers fans around here, I think we're united in our support of the NFC entry in this year's SB on ilnfl.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 17 January 2011 05:24 (fourteen years ago)

im so tired of aaron rodgers. ooh hes so kooky and wacky because he grows eccentric facial hair. if you guys knew packers fans you'd quickly grow to despise the cult of personality around this guy. he stole that stupid title belt celebration from fredex too

everyone loves the rooneys. but i can't fault anyone for rooting against ben. i don't think the jets as an organization are any better, but still yeah.

mookieproof, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:32 (fourteen years ago)

this is how most steelers fans i know feel - 'the guy's a creep, but we're just rooting for our team' - which is fair enough, i think.

btw:

"You work all week on one thing and then you get something different," a stone-faced Wes Welker said. Asked to elaborate, Welker said the Patriots planned for man coverage, only to be stifled by a mix of zone defenses.

"We tried to make adjustments, but we never really could get in a rhythm," he said.

Rapey Ben is a problem for me too and by no means do I want to see him with a SB trophy in his hands. Sadly I feel like I can root around him as far as playoffs go. Blinkered thinking I know, I'm not proud of it. But I really really hate the Jets. As a Raider fan history tells me to hate the Steelers and theoretically theres a bit of that but the actual rivalry is not visceral anymore, and since I've been a fan of the Raiders we played the Jets more often. Or at least it feels that way. I can't stand their fans, I can't stand their grandstanding and fake underdoggery and I just quite honesty dont really have any respect for them as a team. Steelers I can accept, on some level, Rapey notwithstanding.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 17 January 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

imo Tomlin coaching cosmically evens Rapey QBing (not in the real world, but in footballworld)

I feel you, but I couldn't ever root for a team that's won 6 super bowls, let alone one with a rapist QB and a wife-beating star linebacker. the Ryan era's done a lot to cool my Jets hatred - Hard Knocks, belichick-baiting, the NYT profile all were 100% awesome - tho of course I understand why he rubs ppl the wrong way, plus even though their fans are mostly animals I've gotten to know a few Cool Fans. and they really ARE massive underdogs! it's ~insane~ that they beat Indy and NE on the road! they have my full support against the Evil Empire next week.

Princess TamTam, Monday, 17 January 2011 06:23 (fourteen years ago)

k i've only scanned this thread and i've been drinking since four but pats/jets was an object lesson in the meaninglessness of nfl analysis--not only dudes who get paid to talk on espn but also the well-meaning folks on this very board and the dudes you overhear on public transit and stuff. the nfl season is so gd short; it's next to impossible imo to say anything definitive abt a team that relies on more evidence than our gut instinct--as the buildup to this game occurred i was p. terrified of the gambling axiom "when everyone is going one way, go the other way" but really who gives a shit--the jets gameplanned better and their defense executed--shit happens, this is the nfl playoffs, if you blow another team out you're lucky because it's not really supposed to happen. i'm not mad save for the fake punt--classic case of belichick outthinking himself--the pats never run fakes, why start in the fucking afc divisional playoffs?

that being said,

I bet he's wondering why they were relying almost entirely on running plays and play action when he's so much better working out of the shotgun.

― Moodles, Sunday, January 16, 2011 11:34 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

wtf are you talking about the jets blitz was extremely effective when the pats worked in the shotgun, that's more or less why they won the game.

i'd be happy seeing any of these teams in the superbowl but the bears.

i'm a bears fan in that i'm a chicago homer but i'd be ok with the packers beating them because i don't think the bears could beat the steelers or the jets, and this packers team is v. likeable. the bears have gotten better in the second half of the season and they've got some momentum but they still don't really seem that good. don't feel that confident in this team.

I think the Bears would have a lot better shot against the Jets or Steelers than the Pats. The Pats are like the Colts, they are a different team if they get up on you a couple of TDs, as then you have to turn into a shootout type game and if your QB (ahem) can make mistakes, that's not what you want to happen. I think the Pats not being there improves the Bears chances of winning it all.

Bears, Jets, & Steelers are about essentially the same kind of club. I think the Bears would be better matched against the Jets than the Steelers, as NY relies much more on the running game and Chicago is pretty good against the run and Sanchez is more likely to make a big mistake than Rofflesberger.

Bad thing I look is that the Packers have that high powered passing game like NE that can put you down two TDs before the dust settles.

The Giants won it all a couple of years ago and shouldn't have won their last two games. Bears could win it if they play to their top level, but it won't be easy and it won't be expected.

It would be damn cool if the Bears did win it all, as it would really validate the core of this Chicago defense that has been playing together for a long, long time and has been good with sometimes not a lot of help on the other side of the ball. (That said Kreutz, Garza and Maynard have also been on the Bears forever - a couple of them all the way back to when Tobin was the coach and they won that div title in 2001.)

Rooting for GB to win the next two...don't have any real preference for the AFC game.

perhaps you mean "shouldnt" like were big underdogs, or made a few fortunate plays (tyree head catch, asante non-int maybe) but its the modern day nfl dude

The Giants got hot and won it all, not really meaning to demean their title, but they were not even the best team in their division let alone the NFC ie NFL. It was a big upset to beat both the Packers and especially the Pats.

The Pats had no good reason to beat the Raiders (got a fluky call) or Steelers (got opportune return-had ringer backup QB) or Rams (dumb coaching by Martz) first time they won it all either. It happens every so many years, a team does it right and everything falls into place.

If the Bears win it all, everything will have to fall right. Bears aren't the best team in football, but they 'could' end up with a title.
