For whatever reason we don't have a thread yet for the Super Bowl so here you go. What are everyone's thoughts on the game?
Steelers have:A better runningbackA super clutch, avoids sacks and converts a bunch of 3rd and longsGood run defenseTwo of the dirtiest players in the NFLTroy Polamalu's Head and Shoulders commercialsCoach who may or may not be Omar Epps
Packers have:A decent RB who would probably be a monster in a high school gameA QB starting to break into elite status, new helmet, hates cancer patientsGreat pass defense; hard to throw on Woodson/Tramon/ShieldsClay Matthews' upcoming Suave commercialsDonald Driver's 47 local TV adsThe fattest man to ever score a TD in the postseasonBelt
Personally I think (well, hope) the Packers win; it's like the opposite of the NFCCG, where the Packers were the better team, but the Bears matched well against them and had an advantage on the turf. Here I think the Steelers are probably the better team overall but the Packers match up very well against them and they should play well in a dome. Post all your Super Bowl thoughts here!

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Raji is the biggest player ever to score a touchdown in the playoffs. If his listed weight of 337 pounds is accurate, Raji is 19 pounds heavier than William “Rerigerator” Perry. Yep, Raji is significantly huger than a guy who is famous for being huge. So, seeing his touchdown dance was pretty special, as well as hilarious

"Two of the dirtiest players in the NFL"
I assume you mean Ward and Harrison. I'll agree with you on Ward, but I think Harrison got a really raw deal this year. There's a difference between playing hard and playing dirty. Harrison could play on my team any day.
― The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
i am rooting for green bay but i am pretty certain pittsburgh are gonna win. i think sburgh's D can do the same kind of job on GB that chicago did but also score points. rodgers looked sub-par against chicago and he is going to have to turn it all the way around for them to have any hope of moving the ball because i can't see starks getting much out of this match up.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
i didn't mean pittsburgh's D would be scoring the points, but you never know.

feel like these teams are p evenly match, could go either way, could also go wildly either was as they havent been the most consistant teams i dont think - so there you have it take it to the bank anything can happen!!!

I kind of agree and kind of disagree. Harrison definitely has gotten a raw deal but he's had a lot of that coming...his famous quote about wanting to knock people out of the game but "not injure them" more or less says it all. I don't think he really knows the difference.
― frogbs, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)
I really disagree with this; Pitt's D is really great vs. the run, not so much vs. the pass. Besides Polamalu their secondary is weak and if Rodgers has time I think he'll pick them apart like he did last year. Obviously Rodgers cannot have the same type of game he did last week but he's always struggled with the Bears. As far as I can tell Pitt's strategy is usually to stuff the run and force QB's to throw on most downs and make mistakes. The Pats and Saints both beat the Steelers by basically abandoning the run and throwing on every down, which is GB's game plan anyway. If you're Pittsburgh I can't imagine a worse type of offense to go up against.

^yea frogbs otm xxp. & then gb's d vs. pitt's o --pitt has vulnerable l&r tackles and maybe a backup center playing? does not bode well considering gbs pass rush. all that said, id still not be surprised if pitt found a way to win a close game
― johnny crunch, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)
if Rodgers has time I think he'll pick them apart like he did last year
didn't pittsburgh win that game? is that the argument in favor of GB winning?? and the steelers look a ton better now than they did the second half of last season.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:50 (fourteen years ago)
keys to the game are pitt's o-line and secondary--if those units have excellent games i think the steelers will win
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)
So bottom line you are saying Packers by 7, because no way is that offensive line going to have a good game, especially not with todays news.
― The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)
well, no--it is possible that they have a good game.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)
Steelers O-line is the weakest part of their team even with Pouncey. Packers D-Line is pretty stout, with Raji and Jenkins and the OLB's. We can talk 2/7, but expect a monster game from the Packer front 7.
― The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)
Rodgers threw for 383 yards that game. The reason why they lost is because Roethisburger threw for some unreal amount as well (500+) and led the team on a ridiculous last-minute TD drive that involved all sorts of GB DPI and holding (plus an unreal TD pass similar to the 2008 SB one). The problem with the Packers last year is that experienced QB's would tear them apart. Look at their losses - Favre twice, Roethisburger, and Warner in the playoffs (their other losses were to Palmer and Freeman). They don't really have that problem anymore; Favre sucked against them this year (and really against everyone else too, so maybe it doesn't count), and not even Tom Brady really had a good game against them; nor did Eli, Matt Ryan, McNabb, or Cutler. They gave up 37 fewer points this year and their secondary is coming up huge in the playoffs.
Steelers offense was quite good in 2009 (and the game I mentioned was a career day for Big Ben); the defense is what let them down.

yes i realize this--this is why the steelers line needs to have a good game for them to win
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)
packers front 7 should be a v. effective unit against pittsburgh and they have guys who can take down "ben"
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)
even tho teams are about even I'd put money on packers, just feels right
― iatee, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)
thing is, it's not just a good GB pass rush getting past a weak pittsburgh O line - the opposing pass rush is going to get close to both of these QBs time and time again. roethlisberger will handle that better. and mendenhall vs GB run d is going to be more of a balancing threat than starks vs pittsburgh run d.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)
that's why my other key is the pitt secondary--rodgers won't have tons of time but i think he can throw on those guys unless they step it up
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)
as was pointed out earlier, teams that can execute in the spread are bad matchups for pitt--there's a reason they haven't beaten the pats in a consequential game for the last ten years
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 18:28 (fourteen years ago)
I agree with that. Curious to see where they position Polamalu, i assume they will do what they did against the Ravens and keep him deep. Against the Jets he was in the box.

It's not a bad secondary either. Ike Taylor's a great CB aside from the skillet hands, Clark's an underrated player, we know about Polamalu. It's not as good as GB's, but not being as good as the best secondary in the league is hardly a crime, plus their pass rush is wayyy better than the Packers.

― frogbs, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:51 (fourteen years ago)
steelers haven't shown much ability to get to the qb rushing just four. which is maybe ok against sanchize, but less so against rogers.

obviously i'm rooting for the steelers, but i pretty much love everything about the packers. including the fact that their coach is from pittsburgh

― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)
one thing about the atlanta game - the packers o-line played terribly, there were at least 5 times where defenders got hands on rodgers but couldn't finish the sack because he's so elusive. i think steelers' pass rushers are more likely to close the deal.

haven't thought about this nonsense in years.me and my friends would make HUNDREDS of different handmade dumbass campaign slogan posters and then get to school and hour early and tape them EVERYWHERE and we did this every day for weeks. It got to the point where they made me stop because people would come out of class and just stand in the hallway reading posters.

my main campaign promise was that i was gonna get music played in the cafeteria for lunch so i borrowed a turntable, a tape deck, an amp and a nice set of speakers from the music teacher and me and my friends would dj. That lasted a month or two until we ended up with a mosh pit for megadeth and the principal shut me down.
― الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 January 2011 04:46 (fourteen years ago)
i consider teen wolf to be a biopic of those halcyon days
my rival for the prez postition started tearing those posters down so we made a big deal of putting a few posters up twenty feet high in the gym by forming a human pyramid during an assembly. i gave a loud speech about freedom of expression.

Yeah, my irl last name being Cox, I ran for class prez and another girl, Stephanie Cox (no relation), was running for treasurer. Officially, we weren't running together, but our under the table slogan for victory was "Two Cox Are Better Than One!" We both won. And ruled with an iron fist.
That last part's a lie. I don't remember a single damned thing I did as class president.

This is something that's been on my mind for a while, ever since I realized what would happen when we get to the fiftieth Super Bowl.
Does the NFL really commit to the roman numerals and go with SUPER BOWL L, or do they choose then to go with more contemporary numbering?
Because SUPER BOWL L sounds boring as fuck.

27-23 GB strikes me as right
― no beans, push to fart (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 February 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)
I did a parlay bet in my friend's pool, because I was way behind everyone. GB wins by 2 1/2, GB to score more than 23 pts, 1 touchdown by either defense or special teams (8:5 odds). there's hardly any real money involved, but it should make the game even more fun to watch.

Phyliss Diller!
― brownie, Friday, 4 February 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)
My impression was that the SB is not usually a very close game, that often one team would get ahead, the other team would start pressing and make a bonehead turnover, and it would wind up a semi-blowout. But the stats call me a liar -- in the last 14 SBs, there have been seven with margins of 11 or more, and seven with margins of 7 or less.
My guts say Green Bay 28-17.

AARON RODGERS, the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, has memorized every line of “The Princess Bride.” The fact that he can quote Miracle Max on cue makes him probably my fourth favorite football player ever, but this dude is equally surprising off the field. Never mind the hype from a few weeks back, when Aaron was caught on camera, apparently snubbing an autograph-seeking cancer patient. The cancer patient herself didn’t mind – he’s autographed a ton of stuff for her already. In fact, Aaron’s main cause is the MACC (Midwest Athletes against Childhood Cancer) for which he has donated and raised a ton of money. He also took a hundred kids from the Boys & Girls club on a surprise outing this Christmas with fifteen other Green Bay Packer players, and gave each of the kids $100 to buy presents for their families. Aaron is from Chino, California and played superb college ball close to home at UC Berkeley. In the days leading to the 2005 NFL draft—where NFL teams pick the players they want from the college teams—he was considered, along with a guy named Alex Smith, to be one of the top two quarterbacks in the country. However, nobody wanted him. Team after team picked other guys and passed Aaron by. Imagine you were waiting to be picked for dodgeball in gym class and with each person who got picked before you, you lost millions of dollars. That’s what Aaron went through. Alex Smith was picked first overall and got a six-year deal for $49.5 million. Aaron fell all the way to 24th, and got one-seventh of that. And then when he gets to the NFL he has to wait behind a guy named Brett Favre for three years while Brett constantly retires and un-retires. Aaron didn’t complain about any of this. He waited for his turn. Now he’s in the damn Super Bowl for the first time, facing Troy Polamalu and a Pittsburgh front line that features Brett Keisel’s amazing beard, a 300-lb. man named Ziggy, and a fellow named James Harrison, who, even after the NFL started issuing fines for tackles that could cause concussions, has said that he doesn’t care how much he’s fined—and he’s been fined a lot—he’s going to hurt people. James Harrison has knocked people out of games before, and because Aaron Rodgers is the single most important man on the Green Bay Packers, he will try to knock Aaron out of the Super Bowl as quickly as possible. For three hours, Aaron is going to have to look across the line of scrimmage at James Harrison up to 60 times, gunning full-steam for his face, his head, his career. Have fun storming the castle.

― Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 5 February 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)
i don't make predictions in general, let alone when one of my teams is involved, but.
between the travails of the steelers offensive line and my lack of faith in their secondary (apart from polamalu), it seems v. reasonable that the pack is favored.
i was somewhat more optimistic against the lol cards/seahawks

Aaron is from Chino, California
Oh my God if this were true I would NEVER stop talking about it.
ftr, Chino is in Southern California, has a prison occasionally referenced in rap songs, used to produce more cheese than any city in Wisconsin (before all the dairies were sold and turned into residential areas), was portrayed as the worst place on earth by Fox's The OC, and is where I grew up (until we moved to Chino Hills in jr high)
Chico is in Northern California, has a Cal State once named America's best party school, and is the home of Sierra Nevada beer and Aaron Rodgers. Chino can't really compete with either of those.

Wow... I can't believe anyone thinks Big Ben has nearly the talent as Rodgers at QB. His QB rating is pretty mediocre and honestly is is a soso QB on a great team. The only thing he is better than at Rodgers is Rape.
Yesterday, 8:47:03 PM PST – Flag – Reply
Chris Kenny
Roethlisberger's QB rating is 92.5, Brady's is 95.2 and Manning 94.9. Mediocre? Really? As of 2009 he was in the top 10 for career QB rating. We do have the internet ya know, it's easy to confirm something before you make yourself look like a fool. Maybe use it next time. As for the "rape" comment, c'mon, that's the best you can come up with? And put what it really is, "alleged rape", since he was never charged.
Yesterday, 9:20:53 PM PST – Flag – Reply
Russell Gorall
Every rape is alleged when the person who was raped was paid a million or two. I have to say, though, Big Ben rapes really well. Maybe that helps him being a quarterback in the NFL.

I don't think Sanders should have gotten forward progress on that play for first down. He caught the ball ran in and then tried to curve out making a forward move and got tackled behind where he originally caught the pass.

So uhm I think some people are overexaggerating Ben's game, the pick six was horrible, shouldn't have thrown that far downfield with a hand in his face and without being able to step into it...
Second pick was the ball being ripped out...but he did lead them back into it.
It's not like he played like Cutler!
― r0b /via/ orl (San Te), Monday, 7 February 2011 03:32 (fourteen years ago)
I'm so sad, you guys.
Yes, the Packers won (yay!) and that's good. But now there's no more football. None. I'm going to hibernate until draft day at least.

― earlnash, Monday, 7 February 2011 03:46 (fourteen years ago)
Baseball is a low burn kind of sport to follow though, it just isn't nearly as funny as football.
fwiw, i think this nba year is different. somewhat of a golden age imo. worth watching the second-half of the regular season.

(nfl gets points for being more violent, tho).
I used to be a big baseball fan, but I turned away from it during/after the '94 strike. Not BECAUSE OF the strike, but because I realized during baseball's absence that it's actually a real bore.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 February 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
Pretty much only care about baseball, but that's because I don't actually watch any games ever.
― Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)
Sometimes the bore is kind of the nice thing about baseball. It's relaxing to sometimes put a game on TV or radio and have a snooze.
Of course, I do the same thing sometimes in football, go to sleep just after kickoff and wake up around the 4th quarter.
Some of the numbers whores make reading about baseball f-ing tedious and every year more obscure.
― earlnash, Monday, 7 February 2011 03:55 (fourteen years ago)
pretty mediocre game imo--it was "close" but there weren't really huge momentum swings and pittsburgh never put anything together that made u say "oh damn those guys mean business."
rodgers made some sick throws as usual and i'm v. happy for him and the packers but that was the worst one since indy/chicago.

xxxxpost imo you guys have been spoiled with the likes of the Patriots-Giants SB, Steelers-Cardinals, Patriots-Rams Super Bowls. can't always be like that with lead changes galore. quality game with back and forth momentum, yea the Packers always had the lead but that means nothing....Steelers had the ball down three and deep inside Packer territory.
definitely better than last year's, the last two Patriot wins, Indy-Bears, and Steelers-Seahawks, so really that means it's only beat by the three I mentioned, which were also some of the best SBs ever.
― r0b /via/ orl (San Te), Monday, 7 February 2011 04:13 (fourteen years ago)
yea the traction on the field was ridiculous. even after all the injuries ceased, I could see Mendenhall struggling to maintain his footing, and cuts were almost nonexistent while running.
an embarassment for Jerry Jones to be sure. he and the NFL should catch heat for that, for both safety and entertainment reasons.
― r0b /via/ orl (San Te), Monday, 7 February 2011 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

san te the end of pats/panthers was insane, that was a great game. pats/eagles was dull, yeah.
I'm really surprised that almost all of my friends were screaming about how awful the Black Eyed Peas halftime show was, mostly because some of them like the group.
Granted, I couldn't barely 'hear' any of the show as the bar I was in had poor sound all night, though it was delightfully goofy visually.
― r0b /via/ orl (San Te), Monday, 7 February 2011 04:19 (fourteen years ago)

1st: THIS IS THE BEST THING
2nd: It sucks that Woodson and Driver had to come out of the game. Was legit concerned that our defense was going to fall apart even moreso than it did, but I think AJ Hawk and some other dudes had a pretty great game in his absence. But like, if Woodson had gone out in the Philadelphia game (where the whole defensive gameplan was Woodson stays on Vick), we would have been gone on Wild Card Weekend. But man of all the dudes on the team who I just wanted to be there to enjoy the whole thing, it was Woodson and Driver. The injury parade in the second quarter was pretty terrifying (and made worse that my friend who likes the Steelers was hamming up the villainy and was actively cheering Woodson's injury, which is indefensible imo).
3rd: 4 out of the last 5 games (Chicago Week 17, Philadelphia, Chicago NFC Championship, tonight) involved the Packers keeping a tenuous lead that was only officially sealed in the last minute of the game. Past six weeks have taken some years off my life, man. Worth it, but still.
4th: I chugged champagne out of a bottle and hugged people from Wisconsin. BECAUSE THE PACKERS WON AT FOOTBALL!!!!!! * Belt motion *

I liked that the officials didn't throw a lot of laundry in this one. really not too many major botched calls, if any really. any that I called out weren't really game changers.
― r0b /via/ orl (San Te), Monday, 7 February 2011 04:29 (fourteen years ago)
congrats C-L!
the parade of packers DBs leaving the field at the end of the half was absurd -- would've been so dumb if they had lost cuz of that -- they had some big ass lb covering the slot in 4 wr almost the whole second half, tho it seems like they were just playing zone (for obv reasons)

xpost I think the main reason he didn't get ejected was because he hit with an open palm and not a closed fist.
it was a really boneheaded move though. he had a right to be annoyed that Steelers dude was trying to initiate him into contacting the football, but that could have been a costly penalty (that thankfully wasn't).

anthem's fine, the way of singing it that's become de rigueur sucks though - stretching out every word and making it into like a 20 minute opera - ironically the times i most enjoy hearing it are when they get opera singers and the like to do it because they're always very professional and breezy and zoom through it
― My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Princess TamTam), Monday, 7 February 2011 04:35 (fourteen years ago)
at an Orlando Magic game once there was a doowop quartet that sang it, and towards the end of the song they did this really cheesy elongated riff.

well hes apparently just sort of crazy i guess we already knew that
What about your favorite athletes from other sports?Kobe Bryant is my favorite of all-time. I got that jersey before anyone else. I've been a Brett Favre fan since like 1995. I love the Green Back Packers. It's crazy bein' a Packers fan and a Red Sox fan and your two favorite players get traded. It's rough, like, now I'm a Red Sox and Dodger fan. What? Now I'm a Packers and Jets fan. Seriously. The Packers are ranked high without him though. I'm really torn about that.

"I've been a Packers fan. My father, my great, late father, he went to his first Super Bowl in 1997 when the Packers was in the Super Bowl in the Superdome. When he came home that night, he just came home with a bunch of Packers everything. Packers towels, Packers cups, so, you know, and I'm from the 'hood, and so we used those cups as dishes. We used those cups. So I remember drinking out of Packers cups for years, so I've been a Packers fan for years. I would get the 'John Madden' game, and Brett Favre was on the front of the cover, and I've been a Packers fan," Wayne recalled. "I don't want to be one of those Saints fans that became a Saints fan when they went to the Super Bowl. Everybody know the Saints been terrible for a long time, so I've been a Packers fan."

no. rogers was gracious:
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the game's MVP, on replacing Brett Favre: "I've never felt like there's been a monkey on my back. The organization stood behind me and believed in me and that's what I did on the podium [on the field]. I thanked Ted (Thompson) and Mark (Murphy) and Mike (McCarthy) for believing in me and giving me the opportunity. I told Ted, back in 2005, he wouldn't be sorry with this (draft) pick. And I told them in '08 (when Favre was allowed to leave) that I was going to repay their trust and get us this (Super Bowl) opportunity."

I think the only commercial I liked, or remembered was the Detroit/Eminem commercial. The rest of them just felt like normal annoying commercials except with the added expectation of "Huh? Huh? Pretty funny huh?" Like everyone's walking around with huge PLZ LIKE ME signs on.
Oh, and dare I say it but both of the Coke commercials were pretty cool - the dragon blowing fireworks and confetti, and the border guards.

I'm still grinning from ear to ear like an idiot about this win. I had always thought that Rodgers would be good enough to lead the team to an SB, but this soon? With this many injuries and so many other bad breaks during the regular season?
Not only did they never trail by more than 7 in a game but they also led all 4 playoff games by double digits by the half (only to fall apart enough to make all of them come down to a last drive defensive stand, besides Atlanta of course)
Overall it was a real nerve wracking game, here are my thoughts:
1. Lots of uncalled holding vs. Matthews and Raji2. Tramon had an okay game on the field but throwing a left hook is totally inexcusible, he's lucky he didn't get ejected. If he doesn't do that I would think the Steelers would draw a flag for trying to push him into the ball.3. How was the pass to Swain incomplete? Looked a lot like a catch and fumble to me. I don't get the rules anymore.4. GB should have absolutely gone for it on 4th-and-goal from the 5 at the end of that game. I saw a statistical analysis that actually suggests that MISSING the FG was better for the Pack than making it, which is very marginal but I get the math. If they want to play to tie and put the ball on Suisham's foot, so be it.5. That Suisham FG from 52 wouldn't have been good from 10 - terrible call, considering that Suisham nearly shanked an XP, hasn't made one from that far all year, and historically has been bad in clutch situations (such as say, a Super Bowl)6. Still find it hard to forgive James Jones for dropping another sure TD in a game like this. If he had steady hands he's a clear #1/#2 guy7. Best parts on an emotional level after the win: seeing Driver tear up, Bart Starr in one of the suites, hearing Jennings say "our #1 reciever went down" referring to Driver, and finding out that Woodson couldn't finish his locker room halftime speech8. Commercials sucked, though the Darth Vader one was kind of cute. Coke tries waaay too hard, hate to be a grouch but you guys sell carbonated sugar water not the god damn elixir of life. The one where Rosanne got nailed in the head (plus the Pepsi Max to the face) seemed pretty shockingly violent (for a commercial) and I actually thought it was in pretty bad taste.9. Fire Joe Buck! Aikman is fine but my goodness Joe Buck ruins every big moment
― frogbs, Monday, 7 February 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)
6. Still find it hard to forgive James Jones for dropping another sure TD in a game like this. If he had steady hands he's a clear #1/#2 guy
the extra special thing about this drop is that it was almost an exact facsimile of the one he dropped against philly
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 February 2011 21:26 (fourteen years ago)
No kidding, I think it says a lot that the Packers managed to win despite a bunch of unclutch drops and a zillion injuries, some of which loomed pretty large. Also they have no kick returner at all, which is strange.
― frogbs, Monday, 7 February 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)
1. probably true, but there was also a pretty obvs hold on a pack third-down run conversion early -- aikman even mentioned it5. very. and fourth-and-15 is not optimal either. punt it, try to pin them back
i don't think anyone played particularly well apart from rogers? jordy nelson was pretty great apart from the drops -- nice time to have the biggest game of your career. starks did well on his few runs.
it is totally amazing that they lost woodson and driver and still won. otoh i'm happy that the steelers came back some. that last "drive" was miserable, but when you go -3 on turnovers there shouldn't even be a chance for a last drive.
― mookieproof, Monday, 7 February 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)
Pittsburgh's D played like garbage across the board. Harrison was the only guy who seemed to do anything.
― polyphonic, Monday, 7 February 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)
Jennings was great on the opportunities he got. That 3rd and 10 near the was insane, that's got to be one of the GOAT SB passes. Like, looking from every angle, you still can't really see what Rodgers was looking at, there was such a small window for that throw, and it likely won them the game.
Winning the TO battle 3-0 was huge, but you really can't overestimate Woodson's impact on the game. Losing him (AND Shields, AND Collins) was why Hines Ward suddenly became a huge factor. Both teams got breaks but GB just seemed to get the one that mattered.
― frogbs, Monday, 7 February 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)
this game kind of seems like the future of football -- all these bigger-name players go down and then you have rookies and journeymen and dudes playing out of position step up

to me you don't even have to repeat to be a dynasty in today's world. Steelers woulda pretty much woulda cemented a new one with a win last night imo, with 3 wins in 5 years.

six years, but who's counting
against ne: belichick and brady are both kind of dicks (albeit not rapey ones); bad uniforms; brady = umichigan right-winger
for ne: not the jets, ie not all shit-talking just win; uncanny ability to make other teams' cast-offs useful
tbh there is almost nothing not to love about the packers (apart from me being from pittsburgh)

3. How was the pass to Swain incomplete? Looked a lot like a catch and fumble to me. I don't get the rules anymore.
yes this rule really needs some clarification - they had the ex head of refs or rules or whatever in the booth and he could not explain it better than saying 'bang bang play' - at least no one said anything abt 'making a football move' - in my personal rule book catching turning taking a step then twisting to the ground before losing the ball is a catch so there
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)
While I don't agree with the rule, it reminded me of the many other times this season that I thought that rule was weird, so at least they're consistent.
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)
i thought so too, was trying to explain to my friends at the time, that was a football move once he turns around after the catch. didn't understand that call
― daria-g, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)
i thought i saw the ball come loose a bit as he turned; this one def falls under the "when it's close go with the call on the field" rule

― mookieproof, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 01:29 (fourteen years ago)
the "football move" definition was retired a season or two ago -- mostly because they never defined what the hell it was. basically they just have to possess the ball for some length of time (ie, a second or two) before it comes loose now.
― door to door legume salesman (San Te), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 03:55 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah it was hard to get too upset about it since they've been calling it like that all year...still if it was ruled a catch and fumble on the field I'm sure it stands.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:07 (fourteen years ago)
btw I agree that everyone needs to cool it with all the talk about a dynasty, I mean I'm super pumped about this win and I would love nothing more than the Packers to win a couple more, but so many things have to come together to win a Super Bowl, if Philly hadn't mounted that ridiculous comeback on NYG or if Detroit hadn't beaten Tampa Bay the Packers wouldn't have even been in the playoffs
― frogbs, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 06:11 (fourteen years ago)
Nope, they're definitely going to win four in a row.

Guys, as much as I love DeSean Jackson, we need to put a stop to the "Packers wouldn't even have been in the playoffs without Matt Dodge" idea. If the Giants win, and no other results change, NYG ends the season 11-5 and wins the NFC East, Philly is 9-7 and ends with a worse record than Green Bay and Tampa Bay.
You could argue that if the Giants don't melt down against the Eagles, they would not have lost to Green Bay the next week, but I choose not to do so.
― C-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)
Whoa, I totally forgot that the Eagles actually finished 10-6; I was sure they went 11-5. I guess it's a question of whether or not those last 2 games would have shaken out any differently had they lost the Giants game.

― call all destroyer, Thursday, 10 February 2011 12:51 (fourteen years ago)
I know very little, but I had assumed the 5 mil was a collective figure for all 1,000 plaintiffs, which is $5000 each...am I wrong? (Serious q!)
― werner herzog zwei (San Te), Thursday, 10 February 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)
NFL should make this go away with 10K per person AND superbowl ticket/airfare/hotel for anyone who didn't get in.they're about to be embroiled in a massive shitstorm of bad press during the lockout; 10 mil of goodwill to the fans would be well spent there.

― call all destroyer, Thursday, 10 February 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)
I thought so at first too but it is not just the displaced suing. It also includes those who got seats that complained of obstructed views and poor seat quality.
The article says 1,000 I think. Some of my friends are calling it ridiculous due to the NFLs counter offer...but it doesn't take hotel costs, airfare, other costs that wouldn't have been incurred if they hadn't gone to Dallas, etc.
Also some season ticketholders claim they paid up to 100,000 dollars for season tickets because it came with a promise of a premium SB seat. If that's so, NFL/Cowboys are fucked.

The league initially said Monday those fans would get $2,400 -- three times the face value of the ticket -- and tickets to next season's Super Bowl. The fans also were allowed on the field after the game and given merchandise and food.On Tuesday, the NFL added a second option: They can choose to attend any future Super Bowl instead of being limited to the 2012 game and receive round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations. If fans choose that option, they will not get the $2,400. They can wait until after the conference championship games each season to see whether their favorite team reaches the Super Bowl.
