this has so many mich-app st undertones, all utah st needs to do here is block a kick

J0rdan S., Saturday, 3 September 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

utah st should've just let them score once they got inside the 5. lost themselves 30 seconds.

not sure where to post this but I saw some of the high school football game today between Glenville (OH) and Camden (GA)- Camden ended up winning.

Glenville is a good story as it's the first Cleveland public school to ever make it to the state playoffs (if I have my facts correct) which was a fairly recent development. The coach, Ted Ginn Sr., started out as a security guard before he became head football and track coach.

Also their nickname is the Tarblooders, which is balls.

brownie, Monday, 5 September 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

This whole Texas A&M move is starting to get really nasty. Also? Fuck Baylor.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

nasty in what sense

hearing a lot about 16 team conferences -> playoff system emerges

iatee, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

Baylor is suing A&M, in court, on some bullshit grounds about disrupting the "tradition of Texas football" and they're riling up all the other schools left in the XII to join them after they'd all already agreed to let A&M leave.

One of the columns I read about it makes note of the fact that Baylor was the first Texas school to jump the SWC ship and join the Big XII.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

haha is there a law protecting the tradition of texas football?

iatee, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

No. It's a nuisance suit and apparently A&M, being a government institution, can't be sued (or something along those lines). But it sets a pretty ugly precedent for private universities who might want to bolt from their conferences one day.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

huh, I didn't think of the 6 or how many conferences/playoff connection

it could work

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/os-bobby-bowden-florida-state-health-announcement-20110912,0,7837744.story

TALLAHASSEE -- According to a tweet late Monday night from a news anchor at a Tallahassee television station, former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden is set to make an "emotional" announcement on ABC's "Good Morning America." The tweet says it is about his health.

An email from the Sentinel to Bowden's public relations secretary on the matter was not immediately returned. Instead, an automatic reply was sent from her inbox specifiying that she is travelling with Bowden at the moment.

FSU officials also have not been reached for comment.

anyone else reading taylor branch (!)

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/

Slavery analogies should be used carefully. College athletes are not slaves. Yet to survey the scene—corporations and universities enriching themselves on the backs of uncompensated young men, whose status as “student-athletes” deprives them of the right to due process guaranteed by the Constitution—is to catch an unmistakable whiff of the plantation. Perhaps a more apt metaphor is colonialism: college sports, as overseen by the NCAA, is a system imposed by well-meaning paternalists and rationalized with hoary sentiments about caring for the well-being of the colonized. But it is, nonetheless, unjust. The NCAA, in its zealous defense of bogus principles, sometimes destroys the dreams of innocent young athletes.

daria-g, Thursday, 15 September 2011 01:48 (fourteen years ago)

haha yeah I'm halfway through it, I've been reading like one page per hour tonight

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'd started reading his books on MLK a couple months ago but am only about a third of the way into the first volume right now

didn't expect him to write about sports but I figure if he did it's def worth my time

daria-g, Thursday, 15 September 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)

god the ncaa is just such a horrible org

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)

it's thoroughly shady isn't it? and everyone cheats except like, air force? I don't closely follow the college game but I was killing time at a bookstore and actually read a chunk of that book "Blind Side" and what it's really about is boosters, wealthy alumni, lucrative college programs fighting to recruit players, etc. which was pretty fascinating, I had no idea

i think they should pay those guys. dunno how you'd do it but.. the system is messed up, how many are going to make it to the NFL where they're actually allowed to be compensated and meanwhile the schools make billions.

daria-g, Thursday, 15 September 2011 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

I prefer the college game but it's hard to feel into it w/ so much 'scandal' nonsense.

I got in a big argument over this at a dinner w/ some southern girl who's in my gf's grad school program. most people can't get past "but...they're students!!"

that said I feel like were they to be paid it'd have to be kinda socialist, cause otherwise you'd have millionaires and guys getting paid $50 on the same team.

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

but yeah I just finished that article, it's great, everyone should read it.

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

sometimes I try and even *imagine* a fair and rational way to organize college football, and it seems almost impossible, just on a theoretical level. I think essentially it would have to be a system comparable to minor league sports.

perhaps the NFL takes over, div 1 colleges get matched w/ NFL teams in their area and players are drafted out of HS? colleges allow student-athletes to take classes - if they want - w/o tuition but don't pay for their living expenses. there's a minimum minor league salary but the teams are smaller.

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 03:21 (fourteen years ago)

nfl has no incentive to do that tho & it would be so costly -- the system as it is is basically perfect 4 them

johnny crunch, Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not even trying to suggest something that could actually happen, just an alternate system in an imaginary world - and that's hard enough! the NFL would also have to not be a horrible organization first.

that said, if they had the opportunity to make a big cut of the college $ - already big, could be even bigger w/ a huge playoff - I think that's a pretty good incentive.

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

Superconferences -> playoff system -> D1 schools install different rules about pay/agents/etc than other divisions -> NFL maybe steps in to co-govern D1 only.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

'different rules' is where you'd have to be specific

iatee, Thursday, 15 September 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

It'll probably end up where teams in Superconferences become their own division.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 15 September 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

huh, Toledo with a home game against Boise State tonight

GO GLASS CITY ROCKETS

brownie, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

bam

brownie, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

the theory i've heard broached for years that i always scoffed at but does appear more and more to be a possibility is the major conferences expanding to 16 teams each and leaving the ncaa. the assumption has been that this leads to the playoff but what i wonder is does this lead to paying players? and what sort of system would be installed? and what's to prevent a school from cheating this system? and are there title ix implications w/ paying the football team but not the women's equestrian team?

Syracuse and Pitt going to ACC. Apparently the ACC wants to expand to 16, hoping to get Rutgers and UConn (but there aren't any talks yet). Big East and Big XII are not too far away from either crumbling altogether or at least being completely restructured.

Also, Texas has made a pitch to the ACC for consideration?!!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 18 September 2011 07:18 (fourteen years ago)

What is it with all of the fugly one color uniforms? Those Georgia things from the first game were terrible and I see West Virginia is going with the banana yellow uniform.

I don't want to get into the whole "LSU could totally beat the Rams/Dolphins/Colts/other crappy NFL team" argument but I feel like AT LEAST you kinda have to figure LSU's defense is totally loaded with NFL-caliber talent, which is just unfair against like a pretty good college team. And they're fucking up Auburn without Tyrann Mathieu, even.

C-L, Saturday, 22 October 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 30 October 2011 03:06 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 30 October 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

robert woods is ridiculously good

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 03:55 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

the gap between these two qbs is pretty big huh

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:00 (fourteen years ago)

this has been a great second half

Bee OK, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:00 (fourteen years ago)

enough w/ the wildcat

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

Kinda ridiculous how often Stanford is willing to let their offense involve Luck as a bystander.

C-L, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

like, arkansas and the dolphins both started using the wildcat heavily cuz the former didn't have a qb and the latter's just sucked all around. it's not necessary when you can actually move the ball.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:03 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I'm cool with the trickeration and the reverses but the wildcat I don't get unless you actually look to throw it to luck more than twice a year.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:04 (fourteen years ago)

how many OT can there be?

Bee OK, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:05 (fourteen years ago)

HOLY SHIT

bee ok, unlimited OTs, but after the third it's mandatory two point conversions

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:05 (fourteen years ago)

WHAT

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:05 (fourteen years ago)

C-L, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:05 (fourteen years ago)

YEAH

Bee OK, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:05 (fourteen years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

i hate college football but the overtime rules are better than anything in the NFL, this is fuckin awesome

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

When they showed the graphic for last OT games for each team it reminded me of USC's last (2003 vs Cal), which is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever seen where I didn't like either team. (Aaron Rodgers did start that game, though--but he got benched!)

C-L, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

both of these defenses are totally wasted

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

drew brees grew up and went to high school in Austin and somehow went to Purdue. Mack Brown and quarterbacks smh.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:19 (fourteen years ago)

Stanford does have to recruit nationally because there's not a ton of people who get into Stanford, but per Wikipedia A highly-rated high school recruiting target,[5] he chose Stanford over offers from Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Rice, and Virginia, after being recruited by Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh.

according to his rivals recruiting page he committed to stanford in june of 07 (so 9 months or so before signing day) so it's possible that big schools just stopped recruiting him, but still

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

according to that page he was also only the 4th highest rated qb. And not 5 stars. oops.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:44 (fourteen years ago)

at least blaine gabbert is in the nfl, the other two guys ahead of him ended up being busts

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

I think that's UT's problem btw, they're all about the the 5 stars and 5 star QBs are rare so you end up with a super stacked team without a QB.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 30 October 2011 05:16 (fourteen years ago)

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 3 November 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's ridic, but now BSU will be in an AQ conference and we can stop with the endless "will they or won't they makes the BCS?!" every year.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

it honestly doesn't really change anything from what i can tell except that it gives boise some guaranteed money? i mean they're at the point now where if they went undefeated or have one loss every year that they're p much going to go to a bowl game cuz they will stick in the top 10 of the polls no matter what. and it's not like being in the big east is going to help them get to the nat'l title game or anything... their schedule is still gonna be pretty poor. idk, the whole thing is stupid & unfortunate. i would be great if they could go independent.

It will be nice for them to be in a legit AQ conference because then a school from a non-AQ conference will have a chance to make a bowl. The way it is now it's almost impossible to make it unless Boise falls apart and loses a gimme.

molestation of a child AT PENN ST'S ACTUAL STADIUM

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

It's also alleged that on March 1, 2002, a graduate assistant caught Sandusky and a young male showering together in the football locker room. The GA reportedly notified head coach Joe Paterno the next day, and Paterno notified athletic director Tim Curley shortly after. There's no mention of Paterno notifying law enforcement.

Kelly said the assistant, who was extremely upset about what he had seen, immediately called his father to relate what he had discovered. Together, the two decided that the assistant should promptly report the incident to head football coach Joe Paterno.

The next morning, the assistant telephoned Paterno and then went to Paterno's home to explain what he had seen. Paterno testified that he then called Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley and met with Curley the following day, explaining that a graduate assistant had reported seeing Sandusky involved in sexual activity with a young boy in the showers at the Lasch Building.

Almost two weeks later, the graduate assistant met with Curley and Schultz.

"Despite a powerful eyewitness statement about the sexual assault of a child, this incident was not reported to any law enforcement or child protective agency, as required by Pennsylvania law," Kelly said. "Additionally, there is no indication that anyone from the university ever attempted to learn the identity of the child who was sexually assaulted on their campus or made any follow-up effort to obtain more information from the person who witnessed the attack first-hand."

Instead, Sandusky was told he couldn't bring any of his Second Mile kids on campus.

Both teams have been 2nd half teams all season, but I still don't think anybody's getting more than 20 points in this one. DEFENSE 4 DAYS

i think i brought it up before but im pretty sure the playoff game that romo fucked up the fg snap was 4th d and if theydve kicked it on 3rd or w/e they prob wouldve still won

johnny crunch, Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

hon i don't think any player would have the presence of mind to do that, unless it was just an unbelievably bad snap. i'm p sure the holder would try and get the snap off.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

yea prob not that specific but so much can happen where u still have the ball and then have another down. i mean its very much at the margins but you know

johnny crunch, Sunday, 6 November 2011 03:55 (fourteen years ago)

I'm probably an atypical Bama fan in that I'm not wasting my time cooking up schemes by which the team could still reach the nat'l championship game. I'm just getting ready for the Sugar Bowl.

Although, if either of Bama's pk's were worth a shit, there wouldn't even have been an overtime to squander.

Then it took 10 days before the AD met with the assistant.

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

jeezus, I hadn't read deeply about this before, that Sandusky adopted 8 kids.

The grand jury narrative is that Paterno brought the evidence to Penn State athletic director Tim Curley the next day. Then it took a week and a half before the graduate assistant was asked to tell his story to Curley and Gary Schultz, who oversaw the Penn State University police department. And then, the grand jury charges, the incident was buried and Sandusky was more or less allowed to maintain his office (though he was supposedly restricted from bringing any children into the building).

This stinks to hell and obv points to a mega-coverup by somebody, if not EVERYBODY, in this chain.

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

Re: Jerry Sandusky & Rumors
#195150 - 09/16/10 07:03 PM

I've read some scintillating rumors on other sites as to how this or some other rumor will practically destroy our football program. I don't understand what Jerry did or didn't do on his own time, probably after his stint as PSU coach has to do with the program today? If he did something untoward during his coaching career at PSU possibly but not if it is a personal issue.

I'm not convinced Jerry did anything at all and will wait until the "rumors" have run their course and facts are provided as to the big deal whatever it is. Jerry is and was a class act. Hard to imagine him of all people doing anything that would bring a negative note to the Second Mile or PSU.

i would be curious to hear whether posnanski had heard any of this and dismissed it as horseshit - admittedly program-destroying rumors are kinda par for the course among high-level college athletic programs, but by the sounds of it people paying attention to the PSU program were at least a little aware of the potential implications of this for a while

J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 November 2011 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

Is it a little early to call Luck the #1 pick or am I wrong about this?

Obviously his receiving corps is trash right now.

polyphonic, Sunday, 13 November 2011 08:31 (fourteen years ago)

Luck not being the number 1 pick is extremely unlikely. There's not enough season left for anyone to conceivably move past him.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 13 November 2011 09:50 (fourteen years ago)

Oregon's touchdown drives took 1:41, 1:57, 1:59, 1:32, 1:00 and 3:29. That final 69-yard drive qualifies as a plodding shuffle by Oregon standards.

Bee OK, Sunday, 13 November 2011 12:45 (fourteen years ago)

There's some p questionable logic in here but not really following college football I was unaware that luck wasn't like the absolute nuts statistically http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/10033/andrew-luck-should-not-win-the-heismam-then-or-now

absent a serious collapse I find it hard to believe he won't win. statistics have never mattered, the heisman is more like the oscars race than the al mvp race.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 19 November 2011 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

Spielman was the coach of the Columbus Destroyers, an Arena Football League team, in 2005. He coached one season, compiling a 2-15 record.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 19 November 2011 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, according to the sports by brooks report. and clay travis, who did a feature on herbie last week, says that herbie and urban had spoke about him becoming qb coach there.

and you are a part of everything and everything is like melting (ytth), Saturday, 19 November 2011 05:53 (thirteen years ago)

it didn't get reviewed, but even if it had there wasn't nearly enough evidence to overturn it. it was def really close tho.

some crazy shit is going on in this fsu-uva game

yo zuccotti (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 November 2011 04:07 (thirteen years ago)

uva sacked fsu to end the game but got called for a facemask... fsu gets into FG range and with 12 seconds and no TOs left they call a pass play, like a little out route towards the sideline, the wr catches the ball but does not get out of bounds, fsu tries to rush on the fg team but time runs out. jimbo fisher is stunned, it truly looked like he had fainted, BUT WAIT now the play is under review because maybe the fsu player actually did not catch the ball?

yo zuccotti (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 November 2011 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

i was right, Oregon is now only down 3

Bee OK, Sunday, 20 November 2011 04:09 (thirteen years ago)
