I really have no idea. No clue. This is going to be a season like Mayberry RFD or when Randy Quaid was on Saturday Night Live.

Kerry Collins starting for the Indianapolis Colts.

Obama's jobs speech has pushed the NFL pregame extravaganza to a bunch of cable channels, among them SyFy. I am excited to watch football-related programming on the same channel I normally watch Debbie Gibson vs. Gateroid.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

The last quarterback to start for the Colts who wasn't Peyton Manning was 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

Manning's in the "Mike Sherman's last season at Green Bay" era on the Favre timeline.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

It is definitely much more bizarro NFL to open the season, but in a way I think it is a BIT easier to pick on week one, as you lean a bit heavier on the clubs that usually have their sxxt together than usual (except Indy). There are also a couple of clubs going total commando at QB starting a rookie QB on 20 practices which would only work in like First & Ten or some goofball comedy like Heaven Can Wait or The Waterboy (and even he would never get to return the ball as they pretty much banned kickoffs).

New Orleans @ Green Bay - probably close, but you take the Packers at home.
Atlanta @ Chicago - hard to say or call, but I am leaning Falcons
Cincinnati @ Cleveland- There is just no way Andy Dalton rips the Browns and Cincy wins with their jailbird running game and pourous offensive line. Browns are not great, but if they can't win this one, it's going to be one cold ass fall off the lake. I could see the Cincy defense playing up as it is the Browns and weird stuff happens in rivalry games especially when one club seems like a colossal lock game to take Cleveland, which I do.
Buffalo @ Kansas City- I sware I don't think I have seen the Bills play in like five years. KC are going to be playing without Cassel I think, but I still take the Chiefs at home.
Philadelphia @ Saint Louis- I'm taking the Eagles, but I wouldn't be suprised if the Rams knocked them off, as 1. the Rams seemed to be improving and 2. Andy Reid wins alot of games especially against good teams, but his clubs do have sometimes the knack of playing bad in weird matchups sometimes.
Detroit @ Tampa Bay- Kind of an intriguing matchup, as I think Detroit's D-line is interesting and they are kind of an interesting 'maybe' club. I'm taking the Bucs as they are a flight or two up the stairs from the basement in the development line. Then again...who knows now - I have no idea how much turnover their rosters had in the free for all.
Tennessee @ Jacksonville- I have no idea. Jags cut their middling starting QB for a McCown. Titans only just signed Johnson, have a new coach, qb, etc. Jags I guess--they at least have the same coach.
Pittsburgh @ Baltimore- Well, these guys know each other, so I think the whole lockout turmoil doesn't really apply here. It's still a total pickem game.
Indianapolis @ Houston- I guess Texans, but it would be a good story for the Colt defense to come out and smack down Houston. It could happen, but not bloody likely unless the Colts are able to run the ball for the first time in a couple years.
Carolina @ Arizona- (see Browns/Bengals game then subtract rivalry) I'm taking the Cards hard, new Qb or not.
Minnesota @ San Diego- Chargers have the talent and should win, but they have also played themselves into a corner the last couple years blowing these kind of games. It will be interesting to see if the Vikings defense bounces back at all. McNabb should do Ok, eventually.
Seattle @ San Francisco- fxxk if I know. I think both clubs are running the single wing, as there isn't a freaking QB on either club. I'll take the Niners as Harbaugh you know has a hard on for wanting to beat Carroll at anything. Harbaugh would probably chew marbles to beat Carroll at chinese checkers, if he needed to.
New York Giants @ Washington- I liked that Grossman moxie back in Chicago, but you know that isn't going to work. Giants SHOULD win, but hey it's the Giants, they often really seem as good as their rep/hype.
Dallas @ New York Jets- Eh, I'm kind of scared that Garrett might actually know what he is doing and will cut down on the strippers and showtime that usually keeps the Cowboys from really being good. That said, you go on what you know and last time I saw the Jets, their D was pretty good. Jets it is.
New England @ Miami- Pats. Dolphins off season moves make go good sense at all other than they want to suck get a high draft pick and try to hire a big name next year.
Oakland @ Denver- I bet this one will be fun to watch. I have no idea if either of these clubs are any good. Total pickem, but I go RAIDERS as I am just not a Broncos fan.

Atlanta @ Chicago - falcons
Cincinnati @ Cleveland - cleveland. having just spent a few days in cinci i wish i could pull for them but what they're doing to palmer is unconscionable.
Buffalo @ Kansas City - hard to reconcile how bad the chiefs looked in the preseason with their supposed talent level. if they were away i'd pick buffalo but they're not.
Philadelphia @ Saint Louis - eagles, but i think this will be close.
Detroit @ Tampa Bay - two of the teams i'm most interested to see. bucs.
Tennessee @ Jacksonville - totally agree w/"who knows" but i think the jags will pull this out.
Pittsburgh @ Baltimore - steelers. i think ravens decline in a serious way this year.
Indianapolis @ Houston - week 1 is the best time to pick who you want to win so texans!
Carolina @ Arizona - moribund game of the week. cards.
Minnesota @ San Diego - chargers should take care of business.
Seattle @ San Francisco - niners
New York Giants @ Washington - giants
Dallas @ New York Jets - see indy/houston but man it will get ppl talking if dallas takes this

science you guys (Clay), Friday, 9 September 2011 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

well a decent amount of 1-yard runs up the middle fail! especially when everyone knows that's going to be the play!

call all destroyer, Friday, 9 September 2011 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

you've got to be able to get one yard when you need it

throwing two straight TDs from inside the 2 seems pretty much impossible

J0rdan S., Friday, 9 September 2011 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

play action and leak jimmy graham outside there and they have a chance to tie the game

call all destroyer, Friday, 9 September 2011 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

if they'd have been able to run it up the middle for 1 yard in the 3rd quarter..

daria-g, Friday, 9 September 2011 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

pretty much this game = pack had 3rd and goal on the one, handed it off to their FB and he walked into the endzone, saints have 4th and goal from the 1 and can't even get one inch

J0rdan S., Friday, 9 September 2011 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

you're probably right, but i won't begrudge a coach for being like "well let's try and get one damn yard"

J0rdan S., Friday, 9 September 2011 03:52 (thirteen years ago)

nah i don't begrudge him but one of the few things the packers d did pretty well in that game was control the middle of the line

can there be a round robin for the nfc championship b/w the packers, saints and eagles?

J0rdan S., Friday, 9 September 2011 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

I thought Randall Cobb went way too low in the draft, I figured he would be a lock first rounder. UK football is not a pro factory at all, but if you saw some of the stuff Cobb did, I thought he could become a really good pro. He's a more powerful and polished receiver version of Antwaan Randel El, who was a QB at IU.

Packers want to get real sick, they should run some stuff with Cobb getting the snap out of the shotgun. He was a pretty deadly doing that in short yardage and certain times with UK.

- shoddy offensive line
- young linebackers

- line caves in on second down
- line fails to pick up blitz on third down

first defensive possession:

- linebackers get sucked into the line on a run, stephen jackson cuts back, runs for a 40+ yard touchdown

Bear's D and special teams as usual are a big reason they are looking good. O-line until this last drive had been still really porous. Falcons had been able to put pash rush when needed up till now.

ATL's o-line hasn't been looking good either. Bears front four have been driving in on them all day.

I know you kind of have to have an NFL game on Sept 11th in NY, but really nothing says "YOU WILL NOT STOP AMERICA" more than if this game was played in the Jerry Jones Cowboy Terrordome.

C-L, Monday, 12 September 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

let's talk about how utterly absurd it is that every draft prognosticator was saying that cam newton shouldn't have been the number one pick

if the broncos called up the panthers today and offered them von miller AND their #1 pick this year for cam newton, the panthers would laugh in their faces and hang up in .0003 seconds

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 September 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago)

Dear NBC, please refrain from tight zooms on Rex and Rob Ryan for the remainder of the game, thx

C-L, Monday, 12 September 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

if the broncos called up the panthers today and offered them von miller AND their #1 pick this year for cam newton, the panthers would laugh in their faces and hang up in .0003 seconds

no seriously. mark sanchez is more hated bc he's an unskilled qb in a big market city playing for a team that has had a lot of success despite him? he seems like a legit nice guy to me a little out of his depths. romo is petulant and whiny and plays for a team that has coasted on the strength of their reputation in the 90s w/ kids who lived all of the country but owned Cowboys sweatshirts and then grew up and harbor secret embarrassed love for the team.

"I forget college football games 10 minutes after I watch them but wasn't Newton's motion / delivery supposed to be way subpar? How good did he look while putting up 400 yards?"

The bigger issues are accuracy and making reads.

"I watched the Bills today, they scored 41 pts and Fitzpatrick had 4 TDs and probably a lot of yards but you could tell he's no better than like 20th in the league at the highest."

They actually may have enough weapons now that a mediocre QB might get them 7+ wins.

My favorite story about that Bills game is that the big doofy tight end that got 2 TDs had never caught a pass in his 4 previous years in the NFL.

it might be meaningful - it might be he was playing an nfc west team - but either way whats absurd & lolsome is jordan calling for draftniks to be put in the stockades for daring to doubt cam, esp when he repeatedly denounced the pick in the offseason - idk why im bothering to explain this since his posting persona is obviously deeply satirical, but for real at least give the guy a few games

If I see a Utah Jazz jersey outside of a Utah Jazz game I would have two thoughts:

1) Mormon.

2) My friend had this elaborate wingman code designed around 1990s Utah Jazz players and the pick & roll, I should go tell him.

I tell you, I sometimes wonder if the schedule is the biggest reason for success at the margins of the NFL. Take a gander at the Bengals next few weeks. Maybe one of these clubs will be a 'good' by current standards, but it seems setup for a poor to middling club to give off some home only to be crushed by 4 games vs. Steelers and Ravens in 6 weeks.

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 September 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago)

my fave florio moment last year was when he posted a series of items getting all angry about how rodgers didn't stop to autograph something for a packers fan. i believe the lady was disabled, and happened to be waiting with a group of them outside the practice field one day. it went on and on and florio was so adamant about how awful this was and how rodgers needed to learn to appreciate the fans. finally someone interviewed the lady in question and she was like "there is absolutely no problem and i didn't want to be in the news and GO PACK GO." and florio STILL didn't apologize iirc

horseshoe, Monday, 12 September 2011 04:10 (thirteen years ago)

The commercials I can't get are those cell phone adds where everyone is a douchebag like the guy with the football player and the blown knee and the total dick that is busting on this guys Christmas decorations to his face. It's like 'buy our cell phones' they are perfect for snarky jerks like you. It will allow you to be a creep in more ways than one.

― earlnash, Monday, December 20, 2010 9:22 PM (8 months ago) Bookmark Suggest

The commercial with the football player with a busted knee has some pretty damn weird semiotics. It's this company that is an NFL sponsor selling using your cell phone for fantasy football by having a doctor saying 'who gives a crap about your screwed knee', I'm just glad I was able to dump you off my fantasy team. I'm not even going to get into the racial subtext...all I want to know is who is signing off on this shit?

― earlnash, Monday, December 20, 2010 9:38 PM (8 months ago) Bookmark

this is actually what pro sports are about, a bunch of privilege-denying dudes playing in fantasy leagues and mouthing off about why this or that guy sucks and is terrible and overpaid etc, meanwhile dudes actually out on the field get the shit beat out of them every week and frequent injuries/surgeries/rehabs. it's pretty gross imho

― daria-g, Monday, December 20, 2010 9:46 PM (8 months ago) Bookmark

horseshoe, Monday, 12 September 2011 04:13 (thirteen years ago)

heh. i def should put ironic quotes around any use of 'privilege denying dude' because it's kind of an absurd thing to say, i know. but when you get into the college game isn't it even more fraught, they're not even getting paid, meanwhile how much money do the schools make off those guys.

and when did players having frequent surgeries over the course of their careers become pretty much matter of course? has this always been the case in the nfl?

daria-g, Monday, 12 September 2011 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

what the fuck was ben roethlisberger doing today

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 September 2011 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

both of his INTs were as bad as romo-to-revis, but not on the same level considering the situation

J0rdan S., Monday, 12 September 2011 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

eh whatever. privilege denying dudes are definitely a thing. i know what you mean, sometimes i get frustrated by that use of "privilege" because it seems imprecise. with the specific example of the nfl i think it's fine to just say white fans/sports commentators talking about athletically gifted black men in ways that have uncomfortable historical echoes.

i feel like in the articles i've read about players and injuries, it's been suggested that what used to happen is players would die before the effects of playing football on their brains could manifest. that's more specifically about head trauma, i guess.

xxp

horseshoe, Monday, 12 September 2011 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

this is sorta obvious but i'm sure playing fball after numerous surgeries is pretty recent. i mean, the dude on whichever team it is whose groins are attached by screws. peyton manning get his spine fused and the colts being all "it's a routine procedure, y'all!" etc

Roethlisberger's first-ever off-season without bear rape and vehicular homicide seems to have overly unscrambled his brain; someone needs to cut his brake line ASAP or replace his wife with an unwilling female gorilla, or else the season, I fear, is lost.

brady had so long in the pocket some times it was crazy. miami either didn't or couldn't take away those inside passes that he loves like the jets in the playoffs.
henne did play well but you could see his limitations too.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

henne is a statue when the pocket collapses. There were 3 or 4 plays where he easily could have had his knees injured.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 03:21 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'm pretty convinced that brady is unbeatable unless you can get consistent pressure with your front four, which happened in the jets playoff game last year & also duh the super bowl loss to the giants. you really just cannot blitz brady.

they've had some pretty conservative offensive coordinators right?

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:40 (thirteen years ago)

before Hue

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:40 (thirteen years ago)

journalist: "what's the big difference between playing here and playing in washington?"

haynesworth: "We won."

daria-g, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:42 (thirteen years ago)

lol

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:44 (thirteen years ago)

some of these orton passes are really poor...

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:52 (thirteen years ago)

<3 Richard Seymour for all time.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:53 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder why pats couldn't work it out to keep him there.

daria-g, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

I praise baby Jebus for every day that we keep him

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 04:56 (thirteen years ago)

oh man

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

love that Seymour story about freaking his kids' friends out with his mutant finger.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:04 (thirteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

he's the closest thing we have to another adrian petersen

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

surprised that wasn't a touchdown. At least a challenge?

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:07 (thirteen years ago)

When he runs like that...fuckin beautiful

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

We only got one timeout left, we ain't challenging shit

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

classic example of an offense suddenly opening up after a TO

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

Again on that DHB catch I just assumed it was Moore haha

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:09 (thirteen years ago)

the thing that I love about McFadden and AP is that they run so so fast but also love to lower the shoulder for big hits

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:09 (thirteen years ago)

tebow chants forthcoming?

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:12 (thirteen years ago)

Pain train

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:18 (thirteen years ago)

it's been a penalty fest to be sure but this raiders D is impressive

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:19 (thirteen years ago)

I guess the lesson of the preseason is that the Raiders D will fall apart if they lost too many of the starters

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:19 (thirteen years ago)

I love Raiders D so much.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

hey Hue you have other receivers who are way better than DHB

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

lechler is the GOAT

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

Yup

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:27 (thirteen years ago)

I love that Houston is turning into baby-Seymour

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:29 (thirteen years ago)

it feels so silly to play the MNF theme when the broadcast team is Nessler and Dilfer

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:43 (thirteen years ago)

jay cutler's meaningless touchdown pass ruined my fantasy football week. i am now a pro-tebow extremist.

science you guys (Clay), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago)

Raiders! :D

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:49 (thirteen years ago)

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

am i crazy or did we determine on one of these threads that there was elicit cousin gossip?

you got me again, beets!!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

and it jibes w/what a friend of mine who went to school w/bruschi has said about him:

The Bruschi shit is 10000% legit. He has been hated by EVERYONE since he was a kid. Coaches, class mates, teammates, family members. He was such a fucking asshole to his family that his parents rented out a duplex for him live in by himself when he was in high school just to get him out of their hair. When he was home from college he'd routinely show up to high school parties which more times than not ended with him beating the shit out of the person hosting the party for no real reason. Also, he MAY have fucked one of his second cousins while high.

tedy bruschi: cousin-fucker
